:cool:Man Utd v Bournemouth rearranged for Tuesday

    3173312_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's postponed match against Bournemouth has been rearranged for Tuesday evening.

The fixture, originally scheduled for Sunday, was abandoned due to the discovery of a suspicious package which was later confirmed by Greater Manchester Police to be a hoax.

Old Trafford was fully evacuated shortly after 3pm after a steward had discovered the item in the north-west section of the ground, with a bomb disposal unit called.
Goal understands that the package, which was found in the toilets of an executive suite, looked similar to a pipe bomb.

"We would like to thank Manchester United's staff, the police and other emergency services for all their efforts today as well as rearranging the match for this coming Tuesday," a Premier League statement reads."Both Manchester ‎United and AFC Bournemouth's management has been extremely helpful in reaching a swift resolution, which is the best possible given today's events."

The rescheduled match will kick off at 8pm local time, with United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League all but over after Manchester City's draw at Swansea City on Sunday.

United need to produce an 18-goal swing to overtake their rivals but can retake fifth place from Southampton by avoiding defeat.

'Second only as good as 10th' - Wenger

    arsenewenger-cropped_18d6uwb2yslc215mhuvqu6715b.jpg

After weeks of playing down Arsenal's lack of success this season, manager Arsene Wenger gave a brutal assessment of his team's campaign.

Wenger - who previously said he was proud of his record of keeping Arsenal in the top four as rivals like Manchester United and Chelsea falter - said his side's second-placed finish was not what he wanted from this season.

Arsenal won their final game of the season 4-0 against an already-relegated Aston Villa on Sunday and leapfrogged arch-rivals Tottenham into second place as a result but Wenger said that topping his club's cross-town London rivals was nothing to write home about.

"We are second in the league and we want to be first," the Frenchman said.
"But if you're not first, you might as well be 10th or 12th. You might as well say first is good and the rest is rubbish.

"In sport, when you work in a football club you know that every win you have to fight and prepare more."Wenger defended his team's record, saying their points-haul of 71 was respectable, despite being 10 off champions Leicester who Arsenal beat twice.

"We want to win more. We want to be first. But as well, we have made over 70 points in the Premier League and it is not easy," he said."You have to say Leicester have pulled off an exceptional win. They lost only three games. But we have beaten them twice.

"So you should look at all the other teams. We are not happy by being second but 18 other teams behind us would be happy to be in our position."

Manchester mayor slams Old Trafford 'fiasco'

    oldtrafford-cropped_17tu1snnvszac11vfx29dgk7xk.jpg

Manchester mayor and the elected police and crime commissioner Tony Lloyd has labelled the drama that saw Manchester United's final Premier League fixture against AFC Bournemouth cancelled as a "fiasco".Lloyd called for a full inquiry into how a dummy bomb could have been left behind by a private security company following a training exercise at Old Trafford.

The device was discovered in one of the stadium's toilets just hours before kick-off on Sunday and prompted a full evacuation and abandonment of the final-day clash.

Greater Manchester Police had initially said they had found an "incredibly lifelike explosive device" before it was later described as a replica and removed with a controlled explosion. But Lloyd said the situation was completely unacceptable and needed to be fully investigated.

"A full inquiry is required to urgently find out how this happened, why it happened and who will be held accountable," he said."This fiasco caused massive inconvenience to supporters who had come from far and wide to watch the match, wasted the time of huge numbers of police officers and the army's bomb squad, and unnecessarily put people in danger.

"Whilst this in no way demeans the professionalism of the police and stewards responsible for getting the fans out, or the supporters' calmness and cooperation during the evacuation, it is unacceptable that it happened in the first place."

The Premier League fixture has been rescheduled for Tuesday, with United confirming it would refund all tickets purchased for the game and allow free entry.
The gesture is estimated to cost the club £3million.

    Koeman: Southampton deserve Europa League

    ronaldkoeman-cropped_1lgi92j5p4bve1auttffbwlusg.jpg

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said Europa League group stage football is the least his side deserve after another solid Premier League campaign which could see the club finish as high as fifth.

Koeman and Co. sit fifth after 38 games following a 4-1 demolition of Crystal Palace on Sunday, but await their final position with Manchester United's home fixture against AFC Bournemouth being delayed amidst a bomb scare - which later turned out to be a dummy device left behind after a training exercise.

But Koeman said fifth place - and a direct spot in the Europa League - would be a fair reward for Southampton after an improved season."[Europa League was] a good experience for everybody [last season]," Koeman said. "It was the first time for most of the players how you need to deal in the beginning of the season and also for us the pre-season.

"That's a different one if you need to play at the end of July. Of course we hope we go straight to the group stage. That will be perfect and I think we deserve that.
"What we do after a special season last year, what I call this season I don't know. Even more special.

"Great football, great players and a big support of the fans."Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prose backed his manager, describing the iteration of the first team squad as the club's best yet.

"The quality of the players is at its highest level ever," he said. "The unity of the club right from top to bottom is great, everyone's pushing in the same direction and I think that obviously helps to achieve what we want to achieve."It means everything [to qualify for the Europa League]. You look around the club, the infrastructure of the club from top to bottom it is all built for European football.

"The players and the manager are all geared up for European football, so to be able to finally bring that back to the fans, who deserve European football, is obviously fantastic and we’re looking forward to it."

Klose undecided on future amid MLS links

    miroslavklose-cropped_11lbw8g2dp24y1di05kz63mf61.jpg

Miroslav Klose is not sure where he will be next season after playing his last game for Lazio.Lazio's 4-2 loss to Fiorentina on Sunday was the Germany international's last game for the Serie A side, with his contract set to expire in June.

The 37-year-old ex-Germany international, who converted a 74th-minute penalty at the Stadio Olimpico, has been linked with a move to MLS via New York Red Bulls, while former club Kaiserslautern have emerged a possible destination. But Klose gave nothing away regarding his future, though he insisted he will not retire.

"I haven't decided yet," Klose told Mediaset Premium."I told my manager that I wanted to end the season well, then we'll see what's on the table."I am still having fun and feel that I am in good shape, so I want to continue scoring goals."

Klose, who called Rome home since 2011, ended the season with seven goals in 14 starts for Lazio, who finished the campaign in eighth position.

I’m going to Euro 2016 to win it – Digne

    dimitri-payet-lucas-digne-france_gnn13i9lqjrg10dm55huq4mgn.jpg

Lucas Digne was delighted to be named in Didier Deschamps’ squad for Euro 2016 and is targeting a third European title for France.

Digne will vie for the left-back spot with experienced Juventus defender Patrice Evra. He is, however, focused on the squad and believes that expectations are high ahead of the tournament on home turf.

“I’m going to the Euros to win it,” he told Goal. “I can only speak for myself, of course, but I go into every game to win it - as I think all footballers do. We place great expectations on ourselves just like the French people have. “It is a boyhood dream to be a part of Les Bleus playing such a big tournament in our own country.”

The 22-year-old has paid tribute to his Roma team for helping him into the squad, with his club’s season climaxing in a terrific 3-1 over Milan at San Siro on Sunday.
“I am really happy to be in the France squad,” he said. “I am proud to play for my country, and it is the perfect climax to what has been a truly fantastic season for my team Roma and I.

“We have hit an amazingly high level and a super streak of 17 games without losing - that’s almost half a season! Our confidence in ourselves as a team has only been growing. I have a feel like family with the guys in the squad and the staff around us.”While he would not be drawn on his future, save reiterating his desire to stay with Roma, Digne did comment that he was pleased with his decision to move to Serie A on loan a year ago.

“It was the perfect choice for me to go here last summer and play regularly for a top club in a top league. With this group we could go far next season and challenge for the Scudetto,” he said.

Ranieri hopes Terry continues at Chelsea

    ranieriterry-cropped_4i1u0cjdsbeh167h5va2ky01i.jpg

Claudio Ranieri hopes his former player John Terry can continue his career at Chelsea beyond this season.

The Italian manager was speaking after leading his title-winning Leicester City side to a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on the final day of their fairytale Premier League season, and suggested his former club should ensure Terry remains at Stamford Bridge.
Ranieri had a strong bond with a young Terry when he was in charge at Chelsea, handing the defender some of his first senior appearances at the club after he made fleeting outings as a teenager under Gianluca Vialli.

"I don't want to take sides," Ranieri said when asked about Terry's future at the club, which remains in the balance despite a late contract offer from Chelsea."John Terry, you know, he was like my son. I believed in him when he was young.

"I put him in the team when there were a couple of world champions and European champions and I picked him."For me, it was better to put him in the squad."He's gone on to have a fantastic career, and I hope he can continue."

:yes:Ranieri hoping Leicester can 'do some music' in the Champions League

    claudioranieri-cropped_16hckmdozs5rb1e0slwy0fkaje.jpg

Claudio Ranieri wants to see Leicester City "do some music" when they make their Champions League bow next season.

Leicester will enter the European competition at the group stage having defied the odds to claim an unlikely Premier League title triumph.Few players in Ranieri's squad have Champions League experience, but the opportunity to participate next season excites him.

And the Italian suggested he does not want Leicester to solely make up the numbers."It will be a very good experience for my players," said Ranieri."It will be a very good atmosphere with the music. I hope we are ready, not just to listen to the music but to do some music."

Ranieri veered away from his customary 4-4-2 formation for Leicester's trip to face his former club, Chelsea, on Sunday, deploying three central midfielders.

After falling behind to a Cesc Fabregas penalty, the Italian reverted to his usual tactics and a Danny Drinkwater equaliser secured a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Asked whether the strategic change was a trial ahead of the Champions League, Ranieri responded: "I wanted to check. I played very few times with the three midfielders."It was good but I was not so happy, and maybe when I changed and we went back to 4-4-2 we played immediately better, we pressed high and it was much better for us.

"Next season everything could change, but of course at the beginning we will start with the same shape."Leicester ended the season with a 10-point advantage over Arsenal in second, and the Italian reflected on an astonishing achievement.

"There are so many keys. I can say we were so consistent during all the season, and the other teams not," he added."That was one of our strengths. Every match for us was the last match and we played with this mentality.

"Today we wanted to win, we wanted to do something, and we are all happy because we lost just three matches all season – an amazing achievement."

Robben: I will return stronger than ever before

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has vowed to return stronger than ever as he continues his recovery from an adductor injury.

The Netherlands international has not featured for Bayern since the scoreless draw with Borussia Dortmund on March 5 and will also miss the upcoming DFB-Pokal final versus BVB due to his injury. Some have questioned whether Robben still has a role to play at Bayern with Carlo Ancelotti replacing Manchester City bound Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena next season.

But the 32-year-old is determined to show he can still be a key contributor to the Bundesliga champions."I promise that I will return stronger than ever before," Robben was quoted as saying by AZ."It has been a very difficult time for me mentally.

"You always want to help the team as a player. It's the worst thing possible when you are forced to watch on from the sidelines."Next season is very important for me."Robben has scored seven goals in 22 appearances in all competitions for Bayern in 2015-16.

Iheanacho 'not quite happy' about Pellegrini departure

    manuelpellegrinikelechiiheanacho-cropped_mzmhr8qe2tk41d5hfvhyldjj9.jpg

Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho says he is "not happy" to see manager Manuel Pellegrini leave the club this summer.

Pellegrini took charge of his final game in charge of City on Sunday, a 1-1 draw against Swansea City which all but assured a top-four finish.

Pep Guardiola will officically take up the reins on July 1 and is expected to oversee an overhaul of the current squad, with a handful of players set to be shown the door.

Iheanacho, 19, will be safe from the cull having demonstrated his promise with 14 goals in his maiden campaign, but he says he will miss working alongside Pellegrini, who took him on City's pre-season tours in 2014 and 2015 and handed him a prominent role in the squad this season.

“I am not quite happy that he is going, but this is the football world and anything can happen," he told reporters. "I just wish him good luck wherever he goes, and will be praying for him and hope to see the future.

“He is a special manager for me and has done great things in my life – he brought me into the first team, introducing me to work with the squad right from pre-season last year.

“I am happy for him, for everything he achieved with this team, and happy that he made me a part of it. I won't forget him, no matter where he goes.

“He is popular with the players – he makes people happy when they work with him because he likes to play football."

Iheanacho only received his British work permit last February, bringing an end to a tumultuous period in his fledgling career.
He had been stationed in Barcelona and the United States by City as they worked on finalising his paperwork, meaning that although he first played for the club in the summer of 2014, he had to wait over a year for his competitive debut.

But even after finally seizing his chance in the first-team, the Nigerian is hopeful of getting even better next season.

“I have been playing and scoring goals this season, so it has been a huge difference to what happened to me last season.

"But next season I hope to be much better, and score more goals to help the team succeed in all the competitions."

Hatem Ben Arfa has suggested he may sign a new deal with Nice amid speculation linking him with Barcelona and Lyon. The France international has been in sublime form this season, scoring 17 goals in 34 league appearances to help Nice to fourth in Ligue 1.

Ben Arfa's performances have drawn reported interest from elsewhere and Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere recently confirmed the former Newcastle United forward has held talks with La Liga giants Barca, while Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas has also admitted he is keen to re-sign the 29-year-old.

Nevertheless, Ben Arfa has yet to make a final decision on his future and has now hinted he could extend his expiring contract with Nice."Why would I not stay with Nice," Ben Arfa told Canal Plus when questioned about his plans for the future."We will see what I will do in the future.

"Lyon? They are an interesting club with a lot of ambitions."Ben Arfa, who missed out on a spot in France's Euro 2016 squad, started his professional career with Lyon and had stints with Marseille, Newcastle and Hull City before joining Nice in 2015.

    Verratti successfully completes groin operation

Marco Verratti has undergone surgery on a groin injury, with Paris Saint-Germain confirming the operation went according to plan. The midfielder has been persistently troubled by the issue in recent months but his road to recovery has now begun.

The 23-year-old former Pescara deep-lying playmaker has been ruled out of this summer's Euro 2016 with the complaint, however, he can now spend the off-season focused on rehabilitation.

"The operation was a success," a PSG statement said."Paris Saint-Germain wishes Marco a speedy recovery and looks forward to seeing him back to his best for both club and country."

Verratti added via Instagram: "The operation went well. I would like to thank everyone who supported me through these months: my family, my friends, my team-mates, but also all of you [Instagram followers], who, through your messages, have made me feel important even when I was away from the pitch.
"I will give everything and more to return as soon as possible."

Verratti has made just eight appearances in all competitions since the turn of the year, with his last outing being PSG's 4-0 victory over Rennes on April 29.

Germany goalkeeper Zieler: I'd always go back to Man Utd!

    3178642_heroa.jpg

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler has revealed that he would always leave the door open to a return to Old Trafford should the opportunity ever present itself.

Zieler spent five years at United under Sir Alex Ferguson before he was eventually allowed to leave after failing to make a first-team appearance for the Premier League club.

The Germany international has since rebuilt his career with Hannover 96 although is set to leave the club in the summer following their relegation from the Bundesliga.

Zieler has been linked with a switch to Liverpool and Manchester City in the past and while a return to United appears unlikely at present, the goalkeeper has told Goal he would be open to a return.

He said: "At the beginning I was blown away, it was really fascinating [to be part of the United squad under Sir Alex]. Suddenly there were world famous stars walking past me. So the first weeks were spectacular. But of course you get used to those things.

"Then it is just normal every-day life and you just don't think about what these players have won and achieved. The time at United helped me a lot in my development, personally and as a football player. Today I can say for sure: I would always decide to go there again.

"Nothing has been decided yet [on his future]. There are several offers. I will listen to all of them and then decide. It's a very important decision in my career. So I think to decide too early would be fatal. I am not in a hurry at all. It's no secret that Germany, England, Italy and Spain are the four biggest leagues.

"It's my goal to play in either one of these from next season onwards."

Zieler, who was part of Germany's World Cup winning squad in 2014, also discussed his chances of making Joachim Low's Euro 2016 squad and added: "Of course, and I said this several times already, I really want to be a part of the squad.
"But that's not in my hands, the coaching staff will decide. I can only bring in good performances on the pitch. And I think I did that this season although we have been relegated at the end."

AFC Bournemouth have confirmed supporters will be offered free coach travel for the rearranged Premier League match with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Sunday's match was abandoned prior to kick-off after the stadium had to be evacuated by police following the discovery of a suspicious package in the north-west quadrant, with bomb disposal experts subsequently forced to conduct a controlled explosion of the item.Police later confirmed it was a training device mistakenly left behind after a security firm staged practice drills in the stadium this week.

United announced they would offer ticket refunds or reprinting for the match, which has been rearranged for Tuesday at 20:00 BST.

And Bournemouth have now taken steps to ensure that fans who travelled to the north west on Sunday will not incur further expenses, offering free travel to anyone in possession of a valid match ticket.

"AFC Bournemouth will offer supporters free coach travel to the Cherries' rearranged fixture against Manchester United on Tuesday 17th May," the club said in a statement on Monday."Supporters with a valid match ticket issued on their own account will be eligible for free travel.

Chelsea and Tottenham handed FA fine 'failing to control players'

    3104682_heroa.jpg

Chelsea and Tottenham have been fined by the FA for failing to control players and officials in the Premier League clash that ended 2-2 earlier this month, handing the title to Leicester City.

The Blues have received a £375,000 fine, while Spurs have been hit with a £225,000 penalty after both clubs admitting to breaching rule E20 for "failing to control their players and/or officials".

Tottenham had nine players booked in the game at Stamford Bridge - a Premier League record - while three Chelsea players’ names ended up in Mark Clattenburg’s book. Danny Rose’s touchline tackle on Willian in the 45th minute is the first incident the FA’s fine relates to.

The Brazilian reacted angrily to the left-back’s tackle and the pair had to be split up by Mauricio Pochettino as players and members of staff on both sides piled in. After the home side fought back from two goals down to level the game in the second half, ending Spurs’ title challenge, things got even more heated.

In the 87th minute, following a clash between Kyle Walker and Diego Costa and a late Eric Dier challenge on Eden Hazard, tempers flared up and almost every player on the pitch became embroiled in a debate with Clattenburg. The FA confirmed the punishments on Monday when they released the following statement:

“Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been fined £375,000 and £225,000 respectively after both clubs admitted three breaches of FA Rule E20 for failing to control their players and/or officials.

“It follows incidents which occurred in the 45th and 87th minutes and also at the end of their fixture at Stamford Bridge on Monday 2 May 2016. Prior to this fixture, Chelsea had breached FA Rule E20 on four separate occasions and Tottenham Hotspur twice since November 2014.”Following the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, both clubs were also warned as to their future conduct.”

Security firm said fake bomb had been recovered, Manchester United claim

    old-trafford-cropped_17gi423r7dmi1gp14eoioagkj.jpg

The security firm that left the fake bomb which caused the evacuation at Old Trafford had assured Manchester United that it had been recovered, the club have said.

United's final Premier League game with AFC Bournemouth on Sunday was postponed after the stadium was evacuated by police following the discovery of a suspect package in the north-west quadrant. After it had been destroyed by a controlled explosion carried out by a bomb disposal squad, police confirmed that the device had been a training prop accidentally left behind by a security firm who had been conducting safety drills earlier in the week.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has now placed the firm in question - Security Search Management & Solutions Ltd - under further scrutiny, claiming that every such device, which could not be detected by police sniffer dogs, had been accounted for after its training exercise. He did, however, praise the response of United security officials and the police in their handling of the situation on Sunday.

"The safety of the fans is our number one aim at every event we host at Old Trafford. Overall, I'm proud of how our staff responded," Woodward said in a statement released by the club.

    "The facts are:

    • On the discovery of a suspect package, the police and the club worked quickly and closely to identify the threat, make people safe and evacuate the ground calmly and efficiently.

    • Fans of both clubs behaved impeccably and the evacuation – the first of its type in the UK – was a complete success.

    • Following investigation, the device proved to have been left in error following the training of dog handlers by a sub contractor.

    • The contractor had signed the device as having been recovered along with the 13 other devices at the end of the exercise.

    • That device could not have been detected by sniffer dogs on the routine matchday search of the 100 Club, as it contained no explosives and was used in an exercise training handlers not dogs.

"Once a live situation was identified, the club and police had no option but to treat the matter as a potential terror threat; we could not have assumed it was a training exercise error. Presented with the same situation in the future, we would take the same action."We have worked very closely with the police and counter-terrorism specialists for many years now and enjoy their support on a daily basis.

"For tomorrow's [Tuesday's] rearranged match against Bournemouth, we are working closely with Greater Manchester Police to ensure that robust security measures continue to be of the highest priority.

"We are conducting a detailed evaluation with the help of the police and will share our findings across the rest of the game. Valuable lessons will have been learned from yesterday's events and it is important that those are shared with other stadium operators to ensure that the safety of the public remains the first duty of us all."Christopher Reid, who runs the security firm, earlier said he was prepared to accept responsibility for the costly mistake.

"I'm sure they're having meetings at the moment to see which guillotine they're going to use on me," he said, as quoted by The Sun. "I have to take responsibility in the end, I won't shirk my responsibility."There's a lot I want to say to the fans, but I don't want to do that now. I've actually spoken to a couple of people who were there and they said don't worry about it, everybody was fine.

"I said as long as no one was injured, and I'm really sorry they had to miss their game.

Arsenal agree personal terms with Xhaka and hope to complete deal before Euro 2016

Arsenal are expected to complete the signing of Granit Xhaka before Euro 2016 after the player agreed personal terms with the club, Goal understands.

Xhaka has been courted by Arsene Wenger's side for several months and while Manchester City are the most recent side to show interest in the Swiss midfielder, the player is said to favour a move to Emirates Stadium instead of Pep Guardiola's financial heavyweights.

23-year-old Xhaka wants any deal to be completed before this summer's tournament in France and chief transfer negotiator Dick Law has already drawn up an impressive financial package for the Borussia Monchengladbach star, which he is likely to accept.

But Gladbach are stalling on finalising a deal until they sign a replacement for their star midfielder and have set a minimum transfer fee of €30 million, which Arsenal have mulled over for the past few weeks.

With Xhaka set to be the first arrival at Emirates Stadium this summer, talks between the Gunners and Bolton continue over the signing of defender Rob Holding. A bid of £750,000 has been rejected but the player is expected to push for a move if a follow-up offer is rebuffed.

Wenger confirmed after Sunday's win over Aston Villa that he anticipates Olivier Giroud starting next season as his primary striker, although his priority in the transfer window will still be to bolster his front line, with Juventus forward Alvaro Morata heavily linked.

Meanwhile, City's new boss Guardiola has identified Jack Wilshere as one of his main targets this summer but Arsenal will shortly put a new deal on the table which the player is expected to sign after Euro 2016.

From virtual unknown to Euro 2016 contender: The rise of Marcus Rashford

    hd-marcus-rashford-manchester-united-fa-cup-13042016_16tboak4clmzj1cfaefodi4ksz.jpg

Until late February he was an unknown to anyone outside of Manchester United’s Carrington training complex. Three months on, Marcus Who? has become Marcus Rashford, England squad member and potential Euro 2016 superstar.

The 18-year-old striker stepped in at the last minute to replace Anthony Martial after the Frenchman’s muscle strain in the warm-up ahead of United’s Europa League return clash with Danish minnows FC Midtjylland in February. He proceeded to turn around the tie with two goals on his senior debut.

Less than three days later he was at it again, bagging two more as Arsenal were dispatched at Old Trafford in the Premier League. He has since featured as a starter in 16 of United’s last 17 fixtures, missing only the trip to Norwich for which he was rested, and on Monday was announced among Roy Hodgson’s 26-man England selection for the Euro warm-up clashes with Turkey, Australia and Portugal.

Rashford’s rise has been mesmeric. He may not have continued to score at the healthy rate which made him an overnight star in the spring, but his movement, instinct and thirst for the big occasion have belied his tender years.

Almost as soon as he had rattled in those four goals in two matches to announce himself to the world, the gossip was that he could become an England contender ahead of the Euros. Many presumed that United boss Louis van Gaal would take a similar stance to the one regularly demonstrated by Sir Alex Ferguson during his management career, belittling such talk and doing everything possible to protect his player from tittle-tattle.

Van Gaal, though, insisted that his young prodigy was ready if called upon, telling the media after the defeat of Arsenal: “It is never too early. Age is not important, it is the quality.”

And Hodgson admitted before choosing his squad for the friendly clashes with Germany and Netherlands in March that he wasn’t discounting Rashford. “I would neither rule him in or rule him out, I just hope he can do well,” said the England boss.“I have been watching Rashford for two years, so I have known about him for a long time. He is in our system.”

Now the youngster is very much in the system. One of 26 names announced by Hodgson on Monday, he could well be among the 23 to board the plane to France ahead of Group B fixtures against Russia, Wales and Slovakia in June.

“We have had good feedback from Manchester United on Rashford as a person and a player,” Hodgson added at Wembley on Monday. “Marcus has done brilliantly and is a player who, if he continues to develop and take his chances, there is no reason why he can't become a regular member of the England team. I prefer to have somebody like him knocking on the door rather than bringing back someone who might not make the 23 and we already know what they can do.”

That would explain the exclusion of in-form Sunderland striker Jermaine Defoe in favour of Rashford, and also signals an international future in the making for a boy who has played like a man over the past three months.Hodgson did add a word of warning, though, which suggested the Euros might yet still come too soon for the United star, explaining: "He is one of the contenders.

Competition for a place is quite strong, although I might only get one week to judge that ahead of the FA Cup final. There's no reason if he does particularly well why he couldn't knock someone off their perch, but that will be very hard as there are players who have done very well for two years.”

Yet there is every chance that a youngster whose name had never been uttered by the large majority of English football fans until just a few months ago might well be the player who has everyone talking in France this summer.
