Moyes: It's my worst day in football

    david-moyes_1pr7cskc2mkdq1obqwx3vugbk7.jpg

David Moyes conceded Sunderland's relegation from the Premier League, confirmed by a 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth on Saturday, represented his "worst day in football" but avoided questions about his future.Joshua King's 88th-minute goal secured a 1-0 win for Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light, ending Sunderland's 10-year stay in the top-flight in the process.

Moyes refused to apportion blame for the club's drop into the Championship and the disappointed Scot said it was too soon to decide if he would stay in charge for next season.

"To think about it and talk about it now is just too quick," Moyes said. "They're questions for a week or two down the line - I'm not sure it's for now. I'd like to make sure we get Sunderland back in the Premier League.

"I’m really disappointed. This is my worst day in football. I feel for the supporters. They put their heart and cash into the team and my thoughts are mainly with them.
"It’s a collective thing from top to bottom - it’s wrong to blame any individual. Clubs are much stronger than any one individual.

"I know what a Premier League team looks like, a Premier League squad looks like, and we have looked short of that bit of quality."

Sunderland have required miraculous comebacks to preserve their Premier League status in recent years but captain John O'Shea noted that an 11-game wait for their first win left them too much to do from the off.
"We have come back a few times with some great fightbacks but weren't able to do it this season," the Republic of Ireland international said. "We are obviously distraught and it's not a nice feeling.

"The league table never lies. Performances and results are the obvious thing that have brought us down. We haven't kept enough clean sheets as a team and needed another miracle run to save us but haven't been able to do it this season."

Monaco 3 Toulouse 1: PSG thrashing forgotten as Mbappe and Lemar seal spirited win

    mbappe-cropped_10txps1sd0re5zosw4zxovtcf.jpg

Monaco laid the gauntlet down to Paris Saint-Germain by coming from behind to beat Toulouse 3-1 at Stade Louis II ahead of the Ligue 1 champions' trip to Nice.

Jemerson's defensive lapse put the opener on a plate for Ola Toivonen in the first minute of the second half, but Kamil Glik quickly restored parity before Kylian Mbappe and Thomas Lemar sealed victory, helping the hosts respond to their 5-0 Coupe de France thrashing to PSG in midweek.

Monaco restored their three-point lead over PSG with both teams having played 34 matches, piling the pressure on Unai Emery's champions ahead of their trip on Sunday to Allianz Riviera, where Nice are unbeaten domestically in 14 months.Radamel Falcao endured a frustrating outing in front of goal, seeing a seventh-minute effort scrambled off the line by Toulouse goalkeeper Alban Lafont.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the break, but Toulouse were in front less than a minute into the second half as Jemerson made a hash of trying to clear a cross from the left and Toivonen pounced to score.

Monaco were behind for all of three minutes as Glik turned in Joao Moutinho's free-kick and only a stunning stop from Lafont prevented Falcao from putting Monaco ahead.

Lafont undid his own good work two minutes later, however, clearing straight to Bernardo Silva who put the ball into the path of Mbappe and the teen sensation beat the goalkeeper at his near post with an arrowing effort.

Toulouse retained a threat on the counter but the game was put to bed when Moutinho brilliantly chested Silva's ball to Nabil Dirar and he picked out Lemar at the back post for a simple tap-in.

Wolfsburg 0 Bayern Munich 6: Ancelotti's men clinch title in style

    robertlewandowski-cropped_hqdp5p4qri781id3p089xtxm3.jpg

Bayern Munich clinched a record-extending fifth consecutive Bundesliga title thanks to a 6-0 battering of Wolfsburg.

RB Leipzig's goalless draw with Ingolstadt earlier on Saturday meant Bayern headed into the contest at the Volkswagen Arena knowing three points would be enough to retain their domestic crown with three games to spare.

And the Bavarians produced an emphatic performance as David Alaba's strike, Robert Lewandowski's brace and goals from Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich earned Carlo Ancelotti a league winners' medal in his first season since replacing Pep Guardiola as head coach.

Wolfsburg - who had Luiz Gustavo sent off late on - had conceded 12 goals in their past three league meetings with Bayern and the champagne was on ice when Alaba opened the scoring with a stunning 19th-minute free-kick.Lewandowski extended his brilliant record against Wolfsburg as his first-half double made it 10 goals in his past four matches against them.

Robben's low effort and Muller's predatory finish added to the rout after the break, before Joshua Kimmich ensured Bayern bettered the 5-0 win from December's reverse fixture.

For Bayern, the title win will go some way to making up for a hugely disappointing April that has seen them exit the Champions League at the quarter-final stage while they crashed out of the DFB-Pokal at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

The Dortmund setback led to rumours that Ancelotti's long-term future at the Allianz Arena may be in doubt, but the Italian refuted those reports and he can now start planning for another assault on domestic and European glory next season.

Bayern dominated the ball in the early stages, but were fortunate former striker Mario Gomez was unable to capitalise on rounding Sven Ulreich in the eighth minute. It was a moment of genius that put the visitors ahead, though. Muller was felled by Daniel Didavi 25 yards from goal and Alaba curled a sumptuous free-kick into the top right-hand corner.

Buoyed by the goal, Bayern pushed on and Koen Casteels made a strong one-handed save from Lewandowski's edge-of-the box drive before the goalkeeper showed immense reflexes to also keep out Muller's follow up.Casteels was helpless to prevent Bayern's second, though.

Kingsley Coman led the break to play in Muller on the left of the area and he squared for Lewandowski, who took a touch to get it out of his feet and hammered his shot emphatically past Casteels.

It was game over before the break when Coman - who this week agreed to join Bayern on a permanent deal from Juventus for next season - turned away from Didavi and cut back for Lewandowski to drill home a third.

There was little change to the script after half-time and Alaba crashed an effort against the left-hand post shortly after the restart.A fourth goal arrived in the 67th minute with a trademark goal from Robben, who cut in from the right and hit a 25-yard daisycutter into the bottom-right corner.

Wolfsburg's misery worsened when ex-Bayern man Gustavo man was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away, and the visitors continued to run riot with Muller shooting into an unguarded goal after Lewandowski's effort had hit the post.

Bayern were not quite done, though, and Wolfsburg were hit for six when Robben's cross from the left was collected at the far post by Kimmich and he drilled past Casteels.

Bayern Munich secure Bundesliga title for fifth year in a row

    lewandowski-bayern-wolfsburg_1gendholc26en1kk6rozao5rex.jpg

Bayern Munich have been crowned Bundesliga champions for the 27th time, securing the title with a 6-0 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday.

A goalless draw between second-placed RB Leipzig and Ingolstadt earlier in the game meant three points at the Volkswagen Arena would be enough to ensure another league triumph.

David Alaba put Carlo Ancelotti's men in the lead just 19 minutes into the game, before a double from Robert Lewandowski saw them go three ahead at the break. Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich were on target in the second half as Bayern strolled to three points.

The Bavarian side confirmed the title will end up at the Allianz Arena for the fifth year in a row with three games left to go.

It will be the only major piece of silverware for Ancelotti's side this term, as they were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Real Madrid before Borussia Dortmund beat them in the DFB-Pokal semi-final in midweek.

Bayern have never ended a matchday outside of the league's top two this season and have lost just twice in the competition this term, winning 22. They sit 10 points clear of Leipzig and a further six ahead of Dortmund, while they have the best goalscoring and defensive records in the league - scoring 76 and conceding 17.

Las Palmas 0 Atletico Madrid 5: Gameiro strikes twice in resounding win

    kevingameiro-cropped_xkne12odhy3k1gh02mo4yy1t0.jpg

Kevin Gameiro staked his claim to start Atletico Madrid's Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday by hitting a double in a resounding 5-0 LaLiga victory over Las Palmas, who finished the match with 10 men.

France international Gameiro was in Diego Simeone's first XI for the first time since a 3-1 victory over Sevilla on March 19 and made his mark with two impressive first-half goals at the Estadio Gran Canaria on Saturday.

The striker turned home the opener inside two minutes and added his second after a Saul Niguez header had made it 2-0, Atletico scoring three goals inside the opening 20 minutes of a LaLiga game for the first time since 1957.

Gameiro was denied his hat-trick by the post before Simeone opted to rest him ahead of the upcoming Champions League first leg at Santiago Bernabeu, sending Fernando Torres on in his place just before the hour-mark.

Having been booked in the first half for a high foot on Lucas Hernandez, the replacement for suspended centre-back Diego Godin, Kevin Prince-Boateng was shown a second yellow card when he caught Jose Gimenez with an elbow 25 minutes from time.

Gimenez sustained an adductor injury in the challenge and was replaced by Thomas Partey, who, along with Torres, added further gloss to the scoreline to open up a three-point gap on fourth-placed Sevilla, who travel to Malaga on Monday.

Atletico got off to a great start when Gameiro got away from Pedro Bigas inside the box to steer Saul's tantalising cross into the top-right corner. It got even better for Simeone's side and two goals in quick succession effectively put them out of sight after just 18 minutes.

Saul added to his prior assist by leaping above Bigas to power Koke's right-wing corner beyond Las Palmas goalkeeper Javi Varas, though the centre-back claimed he had been fouled in the process.

Before Las Palmas could take stock of the situation it deteriorated further, with Nicolas Gaitan sliding a pass through to Gameiro and the striker held off Dani Castellano to fires past Varas.

Atletico eased off and allowed Las Palmas to enjoy a greater share of the possession, but they struggled to test Jan Oblak and former Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez was booked for diving after going past Gimenez in the box.

Gameiro almost completed his hat-trick within three minutes of the restart when he slid to meet Antoine Griezmann's low cross from the left and diverted it onto the upright.

Alen Halilovic forced Oblak into a strong save with a dipping effort from outside the box before becoming the second Las Palmas player to be booked for simulation in the 56th minute. The referee went to his pocket again nine minutes later, showing Boateng his second yellow card for catching Gimenez with his arm while challenging for a header.

Simeone granted Griezmann some rest by sending on Angel Correa in the 72nd minute and less than 60 seconds later he combined brilliantly with Thomas, who swept home a fine finish within six minutes of coming on.

Torres rounded off the scoring by turning home Filipe Luis' low cross in stoppage-time for his first goal since February, with Atletico sure to head to the Bernabeu in high spirits as they look to make the Champions League final for the third time in four seasons.

Espanyol 0 Barcelona 3: Suarez brace, Rakitic strike sends Luis Enrique's side to the top

    suarez-cropped_8tps1c4ayyhk1grhvbkjnjzg2.jpg

Barcelona leapfrogged Real Madrid in the title race as second-half goals from Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Espanyol in the Catalonian derby.

Luis Enrique's side - who would have been behind early on at Estadi Cornella-El Prat had Jurado made the most of a golden opportunity - were found lacking in the first half of Saturday's clash, but Suarez came up with the goods early in the second period.

Jurado was the architect of Espanyol's downfall, as his sloppy back pass teed up the Uruguayan, who made no mistake in netting his 25th LaLiga goal of the season - and his first in four games. It was a cruel blow for Quique Sanchez Flores' side, who had more than held their own in a scrappy opening half.

And the result was wrapped up for Barca late on, Rakitic sliding a composed finish across Diego Lopez following a fantastic run from Lionel Messi before Suarez capitalised on another defensive mistake to add a third.

The victory represents a 16th consecutive victory for Barca against their local rivals, and moves Luis Enrique's side top of the pile in LaLiga with three games remaining.

After a frantic start, it was Espanyol who should have opened the scoring six minutes in. Felipe Caicedo threaded a neat pass into Jurado who somehow failed to hit the target from 10 yards out.

Barca did not take long to respond as Neymar - returning to Luis Enrique's starting XI following a three-match suspension - found space, only to see his goalbound strike blocked by David Lopez.

Espanyol's defence was well organised, though, and despite dominating possession Barca were unable to find a way through their hosts' stubborn backline.

Indeed, it was nothing more than a hopeful cross from Neymar that created Barca's best chance of the first half but, unmarked at the back post, Sergi Roberto could only direct his header into the side netting.

Neymar continued to provide Barca's greatest threat as the interval approached, though the Brazil star could only drill a first-time effort wide after latching on to Suarez's clever pass.

Espanyol's work came undone five minutes into the second half, however.Jurado attempted a needlessly complicated back pass, and Suarez duly pounced to prod a neat finish past the advancing Diego Lopez.

Espanyol were carved open again shortly after - Neymar weaving his way to the byline before unleashing a cross-cum-shot that Diego Lopez managed to parry clear.

Former Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez was at his best again on the hour mark, brilliantly tipping over Neymar's dipping strike that was destined for the top-right corner.

Jurado looked to atone for his error with just under 20 minutes remaining, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen reacted instinctively to keep out the midfielder's volley.
However, any hopes of an Espanyol comeback were ended in the 76th minute - Messi slaloming his way through the hosts' defence before teeing up Rakitic for Barca's second.

Barca were not finished there though, Suarez making the most of Aaron Martin's blunder to tuck home from close range.

Manchester United 1 Swansea City 1: Sigurdsson deals damaging blow to Mourinho's top-four ambitions

    gylfi-sigurdsson-croppped_dxpineg2hoie1jqgx425twlnp.jpg

Gylfi Sigurdsson cancelled out a controversial Wayne Rooney penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for Swansea City at Old Trafford that damages Manchester United's top-four ambitions.

Rooney swept home from the spot moments before half-time after Marcus Rashford had gone to ground under almost no contract from Lukasz Fabianski, but Swansea's set-piece maestro stole a point that could wreck the hosts' hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through domestic competition.

United also saw Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly added to their already lengthy injury list just four days ahead of their Europa League semi-final first leg against Celta Vigo.

Swansea, who are now just two points adrift of safety in 18th place, looked the brighter of the teams for much of the first half but chances were limited before the penalty incident in stoppage time.

Jose Mourinho was without injured trio Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and Shaw and Bailly were forced off in either half to compound their concerns ahead of a crucial run of fixtures that includes trips to Arsenal and Tottenham alongside that European semi-final.

United looked likely to hold onto the three points regardless but Sigurdsson's stunning free-kick snatched a draw for the visitors to deny Mourinho's men the chance to move into the top four.

A sluggish start from United was made worse when Shaw hobbled off with less than nine minutes played, the full-back indicating discomfort in his left leg.

Swansea were by far the better team in the opening quarter of an hour and Fernando Llorente brought a fine reaction stop out of David de Gea from a Tom Carroll cross, before United's shaky defence scrambled the ball clear.

First-half goals have been in short supply at Old Trafford this season but Jesse Lingard almost the broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, racing onto Anthony Martial's delivery before seeing his volley expertly blocked by Fabianski.

The Swansea keeper saved well again when Martial cut in from the left and drilled low at goal, but De Gea went one better when he stuck out a foot to stop Jordan Ayew after some fine footwork in the area.

The visitors' good work was undone in controversial fashion on the stroke of half-time, however. Rashford went down as Fabianski raced out to meet him and referee Neil Swarbrick pointed to the spot, after lengthy consideration.

Replays showed the England youngster had gone to ground far too easily and Rooney compounded Swansea's frustrations as he swept the penalty into the bottom-right corner.

Rooney thumped a clear chance against Martial's back three minutes after the restart as United pushed for a second, but there was more bad news for Mourinho as Bailly had to be replaced with what looked to be an injury to his right ankle.

Sigurdsson wasted a great chance to level on the break, blasting high from the edge of the area, but the Iceland midfielder responded in style with 11 minutes to play, bending a sublime free-kick past the motionless De Gea from 20 yards out.

It could have been worse for United had Llorente managed to connect with a Sigurdsson delivery with the goal gaping, but the teams had to settle for a draw that was greeted with huge frustration by the home fans who stayed until the final whistle.

Roma 1 Lazio 3: Keita double wins Derby della Capitale

    dusan-basta_1kihl7p9co0ik1b7fln4diw864.jpg

Lazio beat Roma 3-1 to win a Rome derby in Serie A for the first time since November 2012, boosting their slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League and severely denting their rivals' chances of catching league leaders Juventus.

Balde Keita scored a stunning five-minute hat-trick last time out against Palermo and picked up where he left off by opening the scoring, but Roma equalised through a hugely controversial Daniele De Rossi penalty after a blatant Kevin Strootman dive.

Luckily for Lazio, that contentious call made no difference as Dusan Basta and a second goal for Keita secured the points for the designated visitors at Stadio Olimpico.

Roma, who had Antonio Rudiger sent off late on, now face a near impossible task to catch Juventus, who can secure a sixth straight title by beating rivals Torino next weekend, while Lazio are four points off third-placed Napoli.

Head coach Simone Inzaghi was dealt a blow when Lazio's top goalscorer Ciro Immobile pulled out ahead of kick-off due to illness and Roma started brightly by creating a clear chance for Edin Dzeko in the second minute, the Bosnian's six-yard strike deflecting over the crossbar. But Lazio went ahead after 10 minutes, Keita firing through Emerson's legs and into Wojciech Szczesny's bottom-left corner from the edge of the box.

Roma were controversially awarded a penalty just before half-time when Wallace swiped a leg at Strootman - although he made no contact with the Roma midfielder - and captain De Rossi casually stroked the spot-kick beyond Thomas Strakosha for his first derby goal since April 2009.Lazio were clearly angered by the decision, but they regained the lead in the second half.

A cross was half-cleared to Basta, who chested the ball down and he fired home via a large deflection off Federico Fazio, and Keita tapped home his second of the game with five minutes to go to break Roma's four-match winning streak in the derby.

Roma's misery was complete when Antonio Rudiger was dismissed in stoppage-time for a reckless challenge on Filip Djordjevic.

Man Utd set new unbeaten record with Swansea draw

    mourinho-manchester-united-swansea_izb65wyvo4231a4szzrcs0a5s.jpg

Manchester United may not be completely satisfied with Sunday's 1-1 draw with Swansea at Old Trafford, but they will take some joy from setting a new club record on the day.

Jose Mourinho's men looked set to take three points in controversial fashion as Wayne Rooney converted a penalty awarded for a Marcus Rashford dive.

However, a stunning free-kick from Gylfi Sigurdsson in the 80th minute flew into the back of the net to secure a draw for the relegation-threatened visitors.

The draw could severely hinder United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League by finishing in the top four of the English top flight, but it maintains an impressive unbeaten run for the Red Devils.

Having now gone 25 games without defeat, United set a new club record for their longest unbeaten run in a single season in the top tier. Incredibly, though, they have won 13 and drawn 12,

Also their 10th draw at home in the league this season, they are just one behind their previous highest tally in 1980-81.

With four games left to play, United are still behind fourth-placed Manchester City, while Arsenal sit five points behind before they take on Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
