Blanc: PSG desperate to win the Champions League

Laurent Blanc says Paris Saint-Germain must kick on in their quest to win the Champions League after outlining their domestic dominance once again.PSG claimed a second successive treble thanks to Saturday's 4-2 win against Marseille in the Coupe de France final.

Departing striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired the result with a double as PSG maintained their stranglehold on French football.

However, Blanc was not completely content post-match, quickly turning his attention to European success following four consecutive quarter-final exits from the Champions League."I've always been very proud, since my appointment at PSG. Very proud to lead the players But that is not enough. The communication was very clear: we want to win the Champions League," Blanc said.

"We did not reach our goal [In Europe]. But it is difficult. Competition is fierce."We must try to do better with other players, perhaps by putting more emphasis on the collective and the team. We will not leave a project to renew 100 per cent of the team. "We will reflect. But believe me, in this area, it is the fight with big European clubs."

Manchester United players 'in the dark' over Mourinho talk

    3203832_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's players were last night in the dark over reports linking Jose Mourinho to Old Trafford following their FA Cup final success against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Before current United manager Louis van Gaal had addressed the press following his side's extra-time victory, news emerged that Mourinho was likely to be installed at United as soon as Tuesday with Van Gaal expected to leave the club imminently. The 64-year-old is two years into a three-year contract.

However, there was considerable confusion over the managerial situation among the players, who were uncertain about the future of Van Gaal when they met together after the game. Wayne Rooney, the long-serving club captain, was not briefed on the situation regarding the managerial position before news leaked out.

The rumours over Mourinho's arrival began yesterday morning in Spain where the Portuguese and his agent Jorge Mendes hold influence following his spell in charge at Real Madrid. United staff were indeed speaking about Mourinho ahead of the final but they were responding among themselves to the Spanish rumours as opposed to reacting to any official club information.

Local Manchester reports placed Mourinho in the city as recently as Wednesday while the former Chelsea boss attended David Haye's heavyweight boxing match against Arnold Gjergjaj at the O2 in London on Saturday night.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward visited the manager and players in the Wembley dressing rooms on Saturday evening following Jesse Lingard's sensational winner, joking they had left it late to calm his nerves.

Van Gaal shook the hands of his players and told them they were well deserving of their cup win before finalising plans to travel to his Portuguese bolt hole this week.
The Dutchman last night expected to be back at United's Carrington training ground on Monday morning.

'It's over' – has Van Gaal signalled the end of his Man Utd career?

    3147492_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal's future as Manchester United manager has reached a new level of uncertainty as the Dutch boss was quoted as saying “it's over” as he left the club's hotel on Sunday.

Rumours had been circulating that Van Gaal was set to meet with members of the United board on Sunday to learn his fate, while the club's players are still very much in the dark.

Whether the 64-year-old has indeed met with club officials to discuss the next step is unclear, but when asked if he had anything to say to reporters upon exiting his team's central London hotel he told Sky Sports “No. No. It's over”.

The Dutchman led United to their first FA Cup triumph in 12 years on Saturday as Jesse Lingard's extra-time winner capped a 2-1 comeback victory over Crystal Palace despite the sending-off of Chris Smalling.

However, Van Gaal was later plagued by a slew of questions regarding the latest reports coming out of Spain that Jose Mourinho is set to be appointed as United's new manager in the coming days, bringing the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss' reign to an end 12 months short of his planned 2017 retirement date.

Mourinho has been regularly linked with the Old Trafford role since his dismissal by Chelsea in December following a disastrous start to the defending champions' Premier League campaign, but United have refused to speak on the issue at any point over the ensuing five months.

Former United assistant boss Rene Meulensteen said in the past week that the club should have done more to protect the manager and had failed to bring clarity to the situation.“It’s not very good for the club, the players and Louis van Gaal that there have been so many rumours,” he said.

“Louis has been very clear in saying he will be there next season. That’s fine, but the club should back that up. There has been a lack of clarity and they’ve allowed the situation to be drawn out over the last six months.”

But United's fifth-place Premier League finish, which confirms a second season in three years without Champions League football in 2016-17, may well see the club finally make a decision on Van Gaal's two-year tenure.

David de Gea dedicated Manchester United's FA Cup triumph to their supporters.United fell behind to Crystal Palace winger Jason Puncheon's strike in the 78th minute, but a speedy response from Juan Mata forced extra time at Wembley.Louis van Gaal's men lost Chris Smalling to a second bookable offencebefore Jesse Lingard's thunderous strike secured the trophy 10 minutes from time.

United Player of the Year De Gea, who made several key saves to thwart Palace, said he was proud to help his side win the FA Cup for the first time since 2004 and insisted the victory was for the fans.

"[It was tough] with 10 players and with difficult moments, but we fought until the end and we never surrendered," De Gea told MUTV."We are Manchester United, we are one of the best clubs in the world and we have won the FA Cup for all the fans."Jesse scored a great goal and it was even more special with 10 men. We are really, really happy to win the FA Cup.

"It's a long time since the club has won this cup and it is a really good moment to enjoy. The FA Cup is back in Manchester."

Rooney: 'Unfair' to discuss Van Gaal's Manchester United future

    wayne-rooney-and-louis-van-gaal_ptag0jxaymny1az1y5bnv4zeg.jpg

Wayne Rooney refused to comment on rumours surrounding Louis van Gaal's Manchester United future following their FA Cup final triumph, stating it would be "unfair".

Ahead of Saturday's match at Wembley, a report in Spanish newspaper AS suggested the Dutchman would be dismissed and replaced by Jose Mourinho in the aftermath of the match.

United clinched the trophy by overcoming Crystal Palace 2-1 after extra time and Van Gaal declined to discuss the rumours during his post-match media conference, having previously hinted to BT Sport he hoped to remain in the post.

Rooney would not be drawn on the topic, adding it is down to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Van Gaal to supply clarification."I know nothing at all. That's a question for Louis van Gaal or Ed Woodward. It's nothing to do with me," he told Sky Sports News .

"I don't want to speak about how Louis van Gaal has been because he's still our manager and he's still in his job."I think it's unfair after he's led us to win the FA Cup that we speak about him as if he's not here.

"I think he's a good manager and we are grateful for him helping us win this FA Cup. It's down to him or Ed Woodward to decide what happens."

Mourinho will not stay at Manchester United long, says Phil Neville

    josemourinho-cropped_1iwf9bizjjqgd1ceoorztyaaua.jpg

Jose Mourinho will not stay at Manchester United for long should he replace Louis van Gaal at the Old Trafford helm, according to former Red Devil Phil Neville.

The Portuguese is widely expected to replace Van Gaal as coach of the Old Trafford club in the coming days, despite the Dutchman claiming FA Cup glory on Saturday.

The Red Devils’ failure to secure Champions League football appears to have led to Van Gaal’s departure and Neville says Mourinho can mount a title challenge.“For as long as I've known it you've got to be the best at Manchester United," he told BBC 5 Live's 'Sportsweek'.

"Mourinho is a proven winner. United fans want a team challenging for the league title, they don't want a team finishing in seventh or fifth."When Jose finishes at a club there is a pattern where he falls out with players, gets disgruntled and the team dips.

"I can't see him staying for too long at United - maybe two or three years seems to be his shelf life at a club - but as long as he brings success United fans won't be unhappy.

"The pressure of football management and demands from owners and supporters and media now means two to three years in a job is enough.”

Neville also feels that supporters will expect an instant impact from Mourinho who was sacked by Chelsea in December after a disastrous defence of their title."He is not the type of manager that will come in and say this is a transitional period and finishing fourth in the league will be enough - that won't be enough for the United fans," Neville added."I am a Manchester United fan and next season I want them to be winning the league. That will be the demands put on him and I am sure he will have the same expectation.

"I know you have to manage a certain way when you're manager of Manchester United, but if you take away that brashness - and you saw that a little bit towards the end at Chelsea - you lose what Jose Mourinho is about.

"He likes to create this siege mentality and that's what Sir Alex [Ferguson] did for 26 years. He told us in every team meeting that the rest of the world doesn't like you, wants you to fail, and that was the basis of our motivation in a lot of our games.

"Sir Alex did like to create a cause for the fight, with the media and with other managers. If Mourinho does that at United, the fans will take him to their hearts."

Blind: Mourinho to Man Utd? I want Van Gaal to stay!

    922532_heroa.jpg

Daley Blind is hopeful Louis van Gaal will remain Manchester United manager as speculation mounts that the Dutchman is set to be replaced by Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Widespread reports claim that Mourinho is being lined up to succeed Van Gaal, who guided the Red Devils to their first FA Cup in 12 years less than 24 hours ago against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Despite leading United to their first piece of silverware in three years, Van Gaal has overseen a largely disappointing campaign which included missing out on Champions League qualification with a fifth-place Premier League finish.

However Blind, who was brought to United from Ajax in 2014 by Van Gaal, has revealed he wants his compatriot to remain in charge at Old Trafford.

Speaking after helping United win the FA Cup on Saturday, Blind said: “The manager was very happy afterwards, like everybody else. It is the first time I have heard that Jose Mourinho will take over.

“I just hope that the manager stays.”

Sky Sports understand that Van Gaal told a reporter that it is “over” when asked about his tenure at United when leaving the team hotel on Sunday.

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in December and has been strongly linked with the United post throughout the course of the season since.

Cavani can replace Ibrahimovic - Al-Khelaifi

    edinsoncavani-cropped_1vjsyvkhv6vzv1d71woj2ylpor.jpg

Edinson Cavani can step up and replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Paris Saint-Germain's main striker next season, the club's president Nasser Al-Khelaifi insists.
Ibrahimovic scored a brace in his last game for the club on Saturday, leaving on a high as PSG beat Marseille 4-2 in the Coupe de France final to secure back-to-back domestic trebles.

Cavani was also on target on the night but Ibrahimovic stole the headlines by reaching 50 PSG goals for the season and departing in the dying minutes at the Stade de France to a standing ovation. But Al-Khelaifi insisted Cavani can shine in the spotlight next season, with 34-year-old Ibrahimovic moving on after four trophy-laden years at the club.

"Who to replace Ibrahimovic?" he told RMC Sport. "Remember we already have a great striker at the club - it's Edinson Cavani."Al-Khelaifi added that PSG's aim is now to win the Champions League after dominating in France in recent years.

"Our goal is to win all the trophies, I hope that next year, it will be the Champions League," he said. "This is our big goal, this is our dream. We will try to do so. We are close, it is not far."

Zidane: Champions League final is too close to call

    zinedinezidane-cropped_1f1ymj4fve9ga1gjbtwveczfe8.jpg

Zinedine Zidane believes Real Madrid face a tough task in the final of the Champions League against city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday. The capital clubs meet in European club football's showpiece occasion for the second time in three years, with Madrid winning 4-1 after extra-time in Lisbon in 2014.

Zidane's side come into the final on an incredible run of 12 league wins in a row, although that was not enough to snatch the Liga title from Barcelona. The Frenchman insists the clash with Atletico is 50-50, although Madrid are "in good physical and mental shape".

"We know it will be a difficult game but we are in good physical and mental shape," Zidane told UEFA's official website. "When you're at this club you always have to give the maximum to win. And now we face the biggest game of the season.

"The end of league season has been extraordinary. We know it will be difficult against Atletico. As I said, it is 50-50 and it will be from the first minute to the last."

Zidane added that he dreamed of playing for Real Madrid, with his stunning volley in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen one of the best moments of his career.

"The best thing that happened to me was to play for Real Madrid. I dreamed of playing for this club, I wanted to wear the famous white shirt," Zidane said. "Now I have the good fortune to train the best club in the world, so I'm a happy man.

"Yes, that volley from that Roberto Carlos centre... you only hit one of those once in your career. I tried to repeat it but it was something that happened that night and it was during the final of the Champions League. "There is no explanation for it. You just be happy and enjoy scoring a goal like that.

"I had not won the Champions League and won with Real Madrid with a goal like that. I've been very fortunate to have experienced those moments at Real Madrid."

England 2-1 Turkey: Kane & Vardy fire Three Lions to victory

    3208022_heroa.jpg

Jamie Vardy spared Harry Kane's blushes as his late winner ensured England started their preparations for Euro 2016 with a 2-1 win over Turkey at the Etihad Stadium.Tottenham striker Kane had put England into an early lead in Manchester, only for Hakan Calhanoglu to restore parity in the 13th minute.

Kane, top scorer in the Premier League this season, then missed a second-half penalty as it appeared Turkey would frustrate England in their first warm-up fixture for the European Championship in France.

However, Vardy - whose goals helped Leicester City to an unlikely Premier League title this season - fired in a late winner from a goalmouth scramble to boost his chances of starting England's opener against Russia in Marseille on June 11.

Manager Roy Hodgson was without most Manchester United and Liverpool players due to their involvement in the FA Cup and Europa League finals, but he will have been pleased to see fit-again Jack Wilshere last 65 minutes, before being replaced by another returning midfielder in Jordan Henderson.

Turkey, drawn in a tough-looking Group D with Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia, saw their unbeaten run end at 13 games and they have now failed to beat England in 11 meetings between the sides.

The visitors may have feared a worse outcome when England took the lead inside three minutes.Dele Alli slipped in club-mate Kane to slot home a straight-forward finish, although the striker was seemingly offside when the pass was played.

Turkey coach Fatih Terim was incensed by the decision to allow the goal, showing the fourth official Kane's illegal positioning on a mobile phone.

The visitors responded strongly, though, first Kyle Walker blocked Ozan Tufan's strike before Cenk Tosun forced a good save from Joe Hart with a snapshot.

And the hosts' backline was breached after 12 minutes with Turkey scoring for the first time against England.

With left-back Danny Rose caught out of position, Hart misjudged a throughball into his penalty area and Sen got there first to pull a cross back for Calhanoglu to apply a simple finish.

England had chances to regain the lead before half-time with Volkan Babacan saving a Wilshere drive before Eric Dier glanced a free header wide and Kane shot straight at the Turkey goalkeeper on the half-hour mark.Kane had the ball in the net again five minutes into the second half after patient England build-up play, but this time the striker was correctly flagged for offside by the assistant referee.

Cenk then planted a free header off-target before the Besiktas striker swivelled and fired just wide of Hart's left-hand post.

The hosts had a great chance to regain the lead in the 72nd when Vardy was pushed from behind in the box by Mehmet Topal having run in behind the Turkey defence, but Kane's fierce effort smashed the left post and went wide.England did find a winner, though, when Babacan fumbled Gary Cahill's downward header at a corner and Vardy reacted first to smash in his third international goal.

Hart then preserved England's victory in injury time with a brilliant instinctive from Olcay Sahan's superb volley, and Hodgson's men can now turn attentions to warm-up fixtures with Australia and Portugal.

Man City & Dortmund agree €26m Gundogan deal

    2234742_heroa.jpg

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund have agreed a €26 million deal for midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, Goal has learned.

Personal terms are not expected to pose a major stumbling block, with talks having taken place over the past few months, and Gundogan is now set to become the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era.

The Germany international's agent was pictured meeting City sporting director Txiki Begiristain in March as it became apparent that the Blues had stolen a march on Juventus and Barcelona, who had previously shown their interest.

City and Dortmund continued to haggle over the price in the interim, but have finally settled on a €26m (£20.1m) deal which will be topped up with performance related add-ons.

A dislocated knee cap has ruled Gundogan out of Germany's Euro 2016 campaign and will keep him on the sidelines throughout pre-season, but City have pushed ahead with the move.

The club have identified a list of priority targets to help smooth Guardiola's transition to English football, with Gundogan joined by Real Madrid's Toni Kroos and Juventus' Paul Pogba.

Despite being unable to take part in City's preparations for the new season, Goal previously reported that the club had no intention of pulling the plug on the deal having highlighted him as a top target and laying the foundations of the deal.

Guardiola officially takes up office at the Etihad Stadium on July 1 but he is expected to step up his preparations after a short break.

The former Barcelona coach guided Bayern Munich to a league and cup double on Saturday, beating Dortmund on penalties in the DFB-Pokal final.

He admitted earlier this season that he had already started to keep one eye on his next job, and it is understood he will turn his full attention to City before the official start date on his contract.

:DVardy missing Australia game to get married - Hodgson

    jamie-vardy_1g9k4ukaar3cy1fx63sfmdqs1e.jpg

Jamie Vardy will not be available for England's friendly against Australia on Friday as he is getting married, manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed.

Vardy hit the winner in England's 2-1 win against Turkey at the Etihad Stadium, making amends for team-mate Harry Kane, who missed a penalty with the score tied at 1-1.

The Leicester City star will not travel to Sunderland, though, and instead will leave the squad to get married."Jamie will now celebrate his wedding on Wednesday, so we won't see him for a few days," Hodgson said."His wedding was planned for last June, I called him up for friendlies and he cancelled it, so he is within his rights to get married on Wednesday.

"The public might be surprised, but the major reason for it is because he had to cancel the wedding last year. It was more difficult for me to see it as an issue than maybe it would have been to complain about this date.

"Under normal circumstances, Wednesday would be when we would join up and, when he planned the wedding, he probably expected 10 days off first before coming back for international duty."But we know Jamie, we are satisfied with him and I don't think his place is under serious threat, so it hasn't caused me too many problems."

Although Hodgson will be without Vardy for the match at the Stadium of Light, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will be available, along with captain Wayne Rooney and his Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford. The teenager limped out of the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on Saturday but Hodgson said Rashford's knee injury is "not serious" and he will be available to make his international debut against Australia.

"Kane and Vardy will face more competition when Rooney and Sturridge and Rashford turn up," Hodgson added."The United and Liverpool players will be involved, if fit, and as for Rashford, I believe it is not a serious injury, but we will have to wait and see when he turns up."

Hodgson was satisfied with his team's performance, with Jack Wilshere getting 65 minutes under his belt as he returns from injury."There were some positive aspects, large swathes of the game we played reasonably well," the England manager said.

"When you play against a team of Turkey's quality it shows these next three weeks are going to be vital in trying to make certain that we can stay compact at all times and make life easier defensively."

Barcelona 2-0 Sevilla (AET): Messi masterclass seals double for Luis Enrique's men

    3209632_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi proved Barcelona's hero in the Copa del Rey final, as the Argentine laid on both of his side's goals to seal a 2-0 victory over Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon.

Luis Enrique's side just managed to outlast Madrid pair Atletico and Real to defend their title in La Liga and it was another feat of endurance to see off Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon.

The Andalusian side could not replicate their second-half majesty of Wednesday's 3-1 Europa League final success against Liverpool, despite enjoying much of the play.

Javier Mascherano's first-half dismissal and Luis Suarez's withdrawal with a hamstring injury kept Barca pegged back throughout, but Ever Banega's dismissal in second-half stoppage time turned the tables.

Messi had been subdued throughout, but it was the Argentina star's inch-perfect pass that put Jordi Alba through to score in the 97th minute.

After Daniel Carrico saw red to add to the feisty atmosphere, Messi again hit top gear to set up Neymar's clincher, sealing a 28th Copa del Rey for Barca, whose Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Atletico stands as the only major blot on another stunning season.

Andres Iniesta turned in a true captain's performance of craft and guile throughout, and his superb scooped pass gave Suarez the first chance, but he smashed wide.

Sevilla's midweek hero Coke slashed wide after Vitolo presented him with a good chance, but the Andalusian fans were raucous after Mascherano received his marching orders after hauling down Kevin Gameiro on the edge of the box with the Frenchman clean through on goal.

Banega curled the subsequent free-kick over the wall and toward the top corner, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen showed his class with a superb save to tip the ball over the bar.

Gerard Pique nearly handed Barcelona the lead in the dying minutes of the first half, beating his marker to Ivan Rakitic's corner from the left, only to thump his header inches over.

The game was Sevilla's to lose following Mascherano's dismissal and Banega hit the post after a flowing move as they turned up the heat and Suarez's enforced substitution due to a hamstring injury appeared to leave Barca's chances crumbling.

Rafinha's introduction for the Uruguayan helped the Catalans control midfield better, but only a last-ditch block from Sergio Busquets prevented Grzegorz Krychowiak from opening the scoring from a corner.

Neither side could find the breakthrough, but momentum titled in Barcelona's favour in stoppage time as Sevilla were reduced to 10 men after Banega brought down Neymar just outside the area and Sergio Rico had to save from Messi and Jeremy Mathieu to force extra time. However, Rico was left helpless as Alba raced onto Messi's pinpoint chipped pass over the defence and coolly slotted home.

Carrico was booked for a rough tackle on Messi, and his protestations earned another immediate yellow card, before Neymar sparked Barca's celebrations in earnest as he prodded home after more Messi magnificence.

Iniesta: Intense and emotional Copa del Rey final caps magnificent season

    andres-iniesta-cropped_oeajmtrc9za012yf8fx3xxbk7.jpg

Andres Iniesta feels Barcelona's Copa del Rey win at the expense of Sevilla was just reward for another season of success at Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique's men missed out on the Champions League, but ended 2015-16 on a high as goals from Jordi Alba and Neymar helped them to a 2-0 win over Sevilla after extra time to clinch the domestic double.

Iniesta put in a superb performance to lead his side in a heated encounter in which referee Carlos Del Cerro dismissing Javier Mascherano, Ever Banega and Daniel Carrico, and the Barca captain was delighted to have played his part."It was a great final, very intense and emotional. It was our last big effort this season. This title caps a magnificent season," Iniesta told Telecinco.

"You always suffer in finals, but this was a very nice game. Both on Sevilla's part and on our part. We are very happy to finish the season like this."We all felt that we had to stick together. Sometimes Neymar did something extraordinary, sometimes Messi and sometimes it was me.

"We got the win in the end and finish the season on a high. I don't know whether Banega's dismissal made the difference. We put in a great performance."

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique took pride in his team of "champions" after they fought off Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final to end the season with a fourth title. The Spanish champions closed out yet another successful campaign with a 2-0 extra-time win against Sevilla on Sunday.

Overcoming a numerical disadvantage following Javier Mascherano's first-half red card, Barca battled past the Europa League champions thanks to Jordi Alba and Neymar in extra time after a goalless 90 minutes in Madrid.

The heated victory ensured Barca ended the season with four trophies, having retained the La Liga crown, as well as winning the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, and Luis Enrique had nothing but praise for his players, despite failing to defend their Champions League title."It was a spectacular end to the season," the coach told reporters.

"The script for this final of the Copa del Rey was difficult, as we spent several minutes with ten men against a team like Sevilla."We have improved a lot in the defensive aspect and everything we had worked in La Liga has helped us to win the Cup.

"This team is made of champions. We must be proud of these players."When the team has had to defend, we have been able to close the gaps, compete and play football. We are proud. It's time to enjoy."

He added: "This year we have won four titles. From six we have won four."This team does not have to prove anything. They carry many titles won with different coaches.

"No complaints about my players. We had a challenge that no one else had, which was to win everything, but it was not possible. It was difficult because this is a complex sport."
