Bayern Munich lose James and Thiago to injury ahead of Borussia Dortmund clash

Bayern Munich have confirmed that James Rodriguez is facing "weeks" out of action with a thigh injury.

The Colombia star was taken off in the second half of Tuesday's 3-0 Audi Cup loss to Liverpool after complaining of discomfort and was sent for further tests on the problem.

The Bundesliga champions have since revealed that he is facing a spell on the sidelines after muscle damage was detected."Bayern will have to do without new signing James Rodriguez over the coming weeks," the club said in a statement.

"As detailed checks by the Bayern medical department showed, the Colombian suffered a muscle injury in his right thigh in the 3-0 loss against Liverpool in the semi-final of the Audi Cup."Bayern added that midfielder Thiago will certainly miss the DFL-Supercup clash with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday after sustaining an abdominal injury.

The knock picked up by David Alaba is not such a concern, though, although the Austria star will need to train away from the team over the coming days.

:love:Manchester United 2 Sampdoria 1: Mata bags winner on Matic debut

    42EA3CEC00000578-4754886-image-a-76_1501705842481.jpg

Nemanja Matic enjoyed a winning debut as Manchester United wrapped up pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory over Sampdoria in Dublin on Wednesday.

Juan Mata scored a later winner to ensure United will enter next Tuesday's UEFA Super Cup clash against Real Madrid on a winning note, after Henrikh Mkhitaryan's header had been cancelled out by Dennis Praet.Matic, who completed a £40million move from Chelsea on Monday, started at the base of midfield and looked comfortable throughout his 45 minutes.

The Serbian's composure helped the Europa League winners maintain control throughout the opening period, but a series of half-time changes stifled their momentum.Belgian midfielder Praet equalised for the Serie A side just after the hour, leaving Mata to assume the role of match-winner for Jose Mourinho's side inside the final 10 minutes.

United began with a back three of Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind, while Mourinho also handed a start to young midfielder Andreas Pereira, who is tipped to figure in the manager's first-team plans this season.

Calamity almost struck the new-look defence as early as the seventh minute when David de Gea was forced to claw a wayward Blind backpass off the line, gifting Sampdoria an indirect free-kick on the edge of the six-yard box.

Thanks to a wall of bodies they survived and, incredibly, raced straight up the other end to open the scoring through Mkhitaryan, who nodded into an empty following a superb dipping cross from Matteo Darmian.Sampdoria might have equalised from a ball over the top moments later only for Fabio Quagliarella's stretching first-time finish to drift wide of an empty net.

Mkhitaryan should have doubled his tally in the 22nd minute, but the Armenia international this time headed Antonio Valencia's whipped delivery straight at Christian Puggioni.

Romelu Lukaku next flashed a curling shot around the post as United began to control proceedings at the Aviva Stadium, but Sampdoria steadied and saw out the remainder of the first half.Mourinho replaced his entire midfield at the break and switched to a back four on the hour, pairing Lindelof and Smalling in the heart of the defence.

The reshuffle proved costly in the 63rd minute when Smalling failed to clear Karol Linetty's cut-back, the loose ball falling kindly for Praet to drive home.Chances began to dry up until the final 15 minutes when the Red Devils pressed forward more regularly and almost recaptured the lead through Ander Herrera.

Mourinho's men did get the winner in the 81st minute courtesy of Mata, who coolly stroked Anthony Martial's squared pass into the bottom corner and sent United to Skopje in winning form.

    MLS All-Stars 1 Real Madrid 1 (2-4 on pens): Zidane's men survive shoot-out after Dwyer's late equaliser

    MLS-All-Star-Game.jpg

Real Madrid wrapped up their tour of the United States with a win after defeating the MLS All-Stars 4-2 on penalties in Chicago.

Spanish and European titleholders Madrid ended the International Champions Cup without a victory after three matches but Zinedine Zidane's side ensured they will carry some momentum into next week's UEFA Super Cup clash against Manchester United following Wednesday's friendly, which ended 1-1 at the end of regulation.

Borja Mayoral's deflected shot beat Stefan Frei in the 59th minute and that appeared to be the winner until Dom Dwyer pounced to convert a rebound with four minutes remaining to send the match to penalties.

But Dwyer had his penalty saved by Luca Zidane, while Giovani dos Santos rattled the crossbar as Madrid return to Europe with something to build on ahead of the Super Cup blockbuster in Skopje on August 8.

Zidane did not name his strongest starting XI as Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Marcelo, Casemiro, Raphael Varane and Dani Carvajal were named on the bench, though captain Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos, Isco and Marco Asensio featured from the opening whistle.

There was a reunion for 2007 Ballon d'Or winner and former Madrid midfielder Kaka, who spent four years at the Santiago Bernabeu and won LaLiga. The All-Star line-up also featured World Cup winners David Villa and Bastian Schweinsteiger, as well as ex-Juventus forward Sebastian Giovinco.

Tim Howard was forced into a save to deny Asensio in the 21st minute, while team-mate and first-team hopeful Mayoral – back at Madrid following a season-long loan spell at Wolfsburg – tried his luck from distance six minutes later.Kroos threatened to break the deadlock past the half-hour mark, almost curling a shot inside the far post as Madrid controlled proceedings.

The All-Stars nearly snatched the opener moments later following a delightful run from Kaka, who drove into the penalty area and squared the ball to Villa but the New York City captain's shot was turned around the post after a fine reflex save from Keylor Navas.Ramos showed his ability as an attacking force, pushing up into an advanced area and cheekily chipping narrowly over the crossbar approaching half-time.

The game's first goal eventually came just shy of the hour-mark thanks to Mayoral, albeit with some help from a deflection.Played in by substitute Dani Ceballos – a signing from Real Betis – Mayoral showed his strength and composure to give Madrid the lead.

It was almost 2-0 in the 65th but substitute Benzema was unable to get past Frei – who replaced Howard at the interval – while Bale also came off the bench and flashed a low shot just past the post.

The All-Stars were limited in their opportunities, though they managed to get in behind Madrid's defence as the league's leading scorer Nemanja Nikolic found the side netting.

Just as Madrid were preparing to celebrate, the All-Stars scored with four minutes remaining after Dwyer was on hand to tuck away the rebound following Dax McCarty's thunderous header, though the Spanish giants were not to be denied on spot-kicks thanks Benzema, Bale, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo.

'Matic is a genius!' - Mouinho lauds midfielder after Man Utd debut

Jose Mourinho hailed Nemanja Matic as "a genius" following his Manchester United debut against Sampdoria.
Matic completed a £40million move to United from Chelsea on Monday, linking up with Jose Mourinho for a second time after the Portuguese brought him to Stamford Bridge in 2014.

The Serbia international signed a three-year contract with an option for a further 12 months and played the opening 45 minutes on Wednesday, featuring at the base of United's midfield as they beat Sampdoria 2-1.

"In my opinion, to play simple in that position is genius, and he's a genius because he makes everything so simple, the team runs, the ball runs, he’s fantastic in his position.

"The way he plays, he plays with his brain, of course he needs physicality to be a at the top of his game, but obviously no pre-season, no pre-season, it's not easy."

Matic pleased to end 'strange' pre-season on winning note

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is relieved to have put a "strange" off-season behind him by debuting for his new side in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Sampdoria.Matic started and completed 45 minutes as goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata secured victory in the friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Having only confirmed his switch from Premier League champions Chelsea on Monday, the Serbia international admitted it was tough to adapt to a new team near the end of pre-season.

"I trained alone in London and it was strange for me but I tried to give my best to control the game well and to give balance," Matic told MUTV ."I think for the first game it was good for me."Step-by-step I think I will be better and better and I hope I will help the team to achieve something this season."

Matic's composed debut will have enhanced his chances of appearing in a competitive match for the first time in Tuesday's UEFA Super Cup encounter with Real Madrid.

Despite his limited preparation, United's newest signing is confident of being fit to play against the reigning Champions League winners."I am sure I will be 100 per cent ready and we can do something good with this club," he said.

"More of a suggestion than a real rule" - Klopp hits out a FFP ahead of Neymar transfer

Neymar's pending transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a whopping €222 million has caught the attention of the entire footballing world, drawing reactions from far and wide.

It's no surprise then, that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was asked about the deal after his side lost out to Atletico Madrid in the Audi Cup, falling on penalties to the Spanish side who claimed the crown.

The Reds boss sees the move as a negative step for the future of the game, and took a swipe at Financial Fair Play, the set of rules put in place by UEFA to hold clubs accountable for any irresponsible spending.

"There are clubs who can pay fees like that - Man City and PSG. Everyone knows that," Klopp told reporters. "I thought that [Financial] Fair Play was made so that situations like that can't happen. But that's more of a suggestion than a real rule."

With the Neymar deal set to go more than double the previous record transfer - Manchester Untied's move for Paul Pogba a year ago - Klopp admits that he's dumbfounded, but hopes that it's an outlier rather than a future norm.

"I don't know and I don't understand that. I don't know how it happens. That's not the next step I hope."I hope that it will stay an exception, but you don't know."

    I don't think Neymar's expensive - Mourinho defends world-record transfer

    vWd4f3Q.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says the world-record €222million fee Paris Saint-Germain are poised to pay to sign Neymar is "not expensive".

Neymar is on the brink of an incredible departure from Barcelona in a transfer that will shatter the previous record set by United last year when they brought Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford by paying Juventus €105m (£89.3m).

The 25-year-old Brazilian's imminent move has to led to questions as to how PSG can afford such a significant fee without breaching UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations. But Mourinho has no issue with the amount the Ligue 1 club are spending on Neymar.

"When we signed Paul Pogba, I said he was not expensive," Mourinho said after United's 2-1 friendly win over Sampdoria on Wednesday. "Expensive are the ones that get to a certain level without a certain quality,
"I don't think £200m for Neymar is expensive.

"Expensive is the fact there will now be more players at £100m, more players at £50m, more players at £60m - that's the problem."Neymar is one of the best players in the world, so commercially that is very strong but the problem is not Neymar - the problem is the consequences."

'Coutinho to Barcelona won't happen' - Owen explains why Liverpool will not lose star forward

Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool for Barcelona this summer is highly unlikely, according to Michael Owen. The Reds have already fended off one offer from Camp Nou for their Brazilian playmaker, with a £72 million approach knocked back.

It could be that their resolve is tested again before the summer window slams shut, with Barca about to receive a record-breaking €222 million from the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.

Those funds would help to finance another raid for Coutinho, but Owen believes that a long-term contract signed in January proves how happy both club and player are with their current relationship at Anfield.

"The news going around Spain is obviously fuel to the fire if the Neymar deal goes ahead - the speculation becomes intensive [regarding a] Coutinho move," the former Liverpool striker told Press Association Sport.

"But he was happy enough a short while ago to sign a long-term deal and since then the club have qualified for the Champions League and strengthened the team."I think they played a really good move in signing him to a long contract because if the worst came they would get a lot of money for him, but I don't see it happening.

"Other than Coutinho not being happy I can't see how there is going to be a deal. It's inevitable that a lot of good players want to ply their trade in Spain but the situation with the length of contract has to count for something."Owen, who now works as an international ambassador for Liverpool, also believes that a lack of activity on the recruitment front suggests that Jurgen Klopp is not worried about losing Coutinho.

Rather than looking at more forward-thinking talent, with Mohamed Salah already on board, much of the Reds’ attention over recent weeks has been focused on RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.Owen added: "Normally there's a giveaway, a number ten bought just in case, but Liverpool seem to be looking at a centre-back and a defensive midfielder.

"Liverpool don't need to sell and the noises out of the club are that they want to reinforce, grow the numbers to compete on all levels. This year they certainly seem to be in buying mode, not selling."

Along with Salah, Liverpool have also brought in Dominic Solanke at the end of his contract at Chelsea and highly-rated defender Andrew Robertson from Hull City.

There is the promise of more to come as well, with Klopp insisting that he is “not afraid to spend” if the right players become available.

'Once a country owns a club, everything is possible' - Wenger questions rationality of Neymar deal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Neymar's proposed €222million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain proves that football is no longer a rational industry.Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday that the Brazil star wants to leave the club and he reportedly completed a PSG medical in Porto hours later.

La Liga rejected an attempt by lawyers representing Neymar to pay the funds to activate his release clause early on Thursday, but the world-record move is still anticipated to go ahead, despite concerns that it would be in breach of UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations.

Wenger feels the deal is a natural consequence of wealthy investors taking over football clubs, with PSG owned by QSI, an arm of the multi-billion Qatar Investment Authority.

The 67-year-old is therefore not surprised to see a proposed transfer of more than €200m only a year after Manchester United broke the world record by spending €105m to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus.

"For me, it's a consequence of the ownerships," he told a news conference when asked about Neymar. "That has changed completely the whole landscape of football in the last 15 years."Once a country owns a club, everything is possible, so it becomes very difficult to respect Financial Fair Play. That's why I always plead for football to live within its own resources.

"We're not in a period any more where you think 'if I invest that, I'll get that back'.We're beyond that now. The numbers today involves a lot of passion, pride, public interest, and you cannot rationalise that any more.

"It looks like the inflation is accelerating. We crossed the 100 million line for the first time last year and only one year later we cross the 200 million line. When you think Trevor Francis was the first guy at £1million [in English football in 1979], and that looked unreasonable, you realise how far we have gone and how big football has become. It's beyond calculation, beyond rationality."

Wenger thinks Barca will be forced into paying inflated fees for their own transfer targets because clubs will know they have the vast income from the Neymar deal at their disposal, provided that the move goes ahead.

"It's the consequences we provoke. If Barcelona want to buy a player, we'll say 'my friends, you have 220 million in your pocket', so what costs 50 million will cost 100 million for them," he said.He also added that such enormous fees are beyond Arsenal's capabilities.

"We still live with rationality," he said. "I think 99 per cent of clubs do that. But of course, we cannot compete at that level."

Wenger tells badge-kissing Alexis: You have to accept Arsenal stay

Arsene Wenger has seen Alexis Sanchez kissing the Arsenal badge and told the Chilean he must accept that he is going nowhere.Exit talk surrounding the Chile international sparked towards the end of the 2016-17 campaign has dragged on into the summer, with the 28-year-old having entered the final 12 months of his current contract.

No extension has been put in place, with Sanchez offering little indication that he wishes to agree fresh terms, and the likes of Manchester City are closely monitoring the situation.

Sanchez has returned to training with the Gunners following an extended break on the back of the Confederations Cup and being ‘sick’, and was in high spirits during a public session on Thursday. He was spotted ‘kissing’ the badge on his training shirt while in conversation with fellow contract rebel Mesut Ozil, before beating his chest.

His actions were clearly in jest, but could offer some indication as his mindset.Sanchez has seen it made abundantly clear that he will not be allowed to move on during the current transfer window, particularly to a Premier League rival.

He may, then, have accepted his fate, with Wenger stating once again at his latest press conference that he fully expects to be in a position to call on Sanchez throughout the 2017-18 campaign, and possibly beyond.

The Frenchman told reporters: "He is focused. My decision is clear, he will stay. He will accept that.“[He is] good, you can see it in training. He needs to work on his fitness but he is sharp and looks like he has never been away.

“I think he will be here for this season. If we manage to do it for more seasons we will.”Sanchez netted 30 times for the Gunners last season, the first time he has reached that particular milestone in his career to date.He was used in a central striking berth on a regular basis, but has seen Wenger bolster his ranks in that department this summer with the £46 million signing of France international Alexandre Lacazette.

Paulinho urged to forget about Chinese money and push for Barcelona move

Paulinho needs to “plan for his future” and push for a move to Barcelona, says former Sao Paulo coach Antonio Carlos Silva.

The Brazil international is currently plying his trade for Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League, having completed a lucrative switch from Tottenham in 2015.

His efforts for club and country have sparked talk of a possible return to Europe, with Barca reported to be leading the chase for his signature. His CSL employers have moved to rule out a sale at regular intervals but Silva, who helped to put Paulinho on the road to stardom, feels the 29-year-old should take matters into his own hands.

He told reporters after heading a Brazilian coaching delegation to China: “Football players have short careers and Paulinho is almost 30 years old. He should start to plan for his future.“Barcelona are a world-famous top club, he should go there to earn a reputation and enhance his influence.

“If he cares more about the salary, then perhaps staying in China is an option. But, whether he will stay or leave, Paulinho is still a great player with a fantastic personality.

“Wherever he goes, he will be grateful for everything that has led him to this point.”
Silva discovered Sao Paulo native Paulinho as a youngster, having also helped to unearth top talents such as Kaka, Oscar and Cafu.

The classy midfielder rose to prominence while with Corinthians, earning him a transfer to Spurs in 2013.While he struggled to produce his best in the Premier League, Paulinho has impressed in China – netting 27 times in 93 appearances – while becoming a key figure for Brazil.

Talk of a switch to Barca came as a surprise to many at first , but the La Liga giants are in need of reinforcements and will soon have money to spend as a proposed €222 million switch for Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain edges ever closer.

Stam demands Manchester United Premier League title bid

Manchester United must target Premier League glory this season, according to former Old Trafford favourite Jaap Stam.

Jose Mourinho added to the club's rich history of silverware last season by collecting the EFL Cup and Europa League but United limped to a disappointing sixth-place finish in the top flight.

Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic have come in as big-money arrivals to bolster the Red Devils' challenge this time around and Stam – a pillar of defensive strength for Alex Ferguson's all-conquering side between 1998 and 2001 – has been impressed by the recruitment drive."A club like United, you always want to win the league. It's always their aim. It has to be their aim, to win the league," he told Sky Sports.

"Bringing certain players in with a certain quality, it's always been like that at United as well."You're always looking as a manager, Mourinho as well, how last season went and what quality do we need. You're going to be looking for that as a club.

"You can see now, with the signings that they've done, brought some great players in; quality-wise very good, experience-wise very good as well."That makes it interesting as well because if you look at the other teams as well, they're all bringing good players in because they all want to win the league or do well in the Champions League."

Juan Mata netted the winning goal as United rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 win over Serie A side Sampdoria in Dublin. They face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup next Tuesday before hosting West Ham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Mourinho rules out Martial Man Utd exit amid Inter rumours

Jose Mourinho has ruled out a summer move for Anthony Martial, saying Manchester United intend to work with a “good squad”.

The France international is among those to have generated exit talk amid more big-money arrivals at Old Trafford. While United have lost Zlatan Ibrahimovic, they have acquired another frontman in the form of £75 million signing Romelu Lukaku.

Martial’s role for the Red Devils has been questioned as a result, with it suggested that he could be moved on as Serie A giants Inter circle – possibly as part of a deal to bring Ivan Perisic in the opposite direction.Mourinho has, however, moved to curb rumours, telling reporters: "Everybody is in the plan. The plan is to have a good squad, not just a good team.

"[We need] options because we have important players injured for a long time. They will be back by the end of the year so our squad is not so big and we need options. We need different players.

"Lukaku, Martial, [Marcus] Rashford – they are all different players and we need everybody. "It’s going to be good, to be funny, to choose the team for every match according to the plan or the opponent. So the squad is good."

Along with Lukaku, Mourinho has also drafted in Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic this summer. He has admitted to looking for one more signing before the window slams shut, with United still seeking greater depth to their ranks.Matic made his debut in a midweek friendly clash with Sampdoria, with the £40 million arrival from Premier League champions Chelsea helping the Red Devils to a 2-1 win in Dublin.

Man Utd to take summer spend towards £200m as Mourinho calls for one more signing

Jose Mourinho has called on the Manchester United board to deliver him one more signing in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have already spent some £145 million on Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

Mourinho, though, revealed that he wanted four key additions before the spending spree started, and that stance has not changed. That means that United’s outlay could be pushed towards the £200m mark before the deadline passes on August 31.

“The squad is good and as I said a few months ago, I was hoping for four players to improve the squad,” Mourinho said following a 2-1 victory over Sampdoria in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.“The club did a fantastic job by getting three of them, which is very difficult in the crazy market we’re in now.

“I thank the club. I’ll be happier if they give me four of four but they did a great effort." United have spent much of the summer being heavily linked with a move for Inter winger Ivan Perisic.

The Serie A club have attempted to bring an end to the ongoing rumours, with coach Luciano Spalletti stating that “the topic is over”.Exit talk refuses to go away, though, and Mourinho’s gaze may continue to drift in the direction of his former club as he seeks to complete his squad refresh at Old Trafford.

While the Red Devils have until the end of the month to get any potential deals over the line, they will open their 2017-18 Premier League campaign with a home date against West Ham on August 13 – five days after facing Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

It's official! Neymar the superstar signs for PSG from Barcelona for €222 million

    42F197AD00000578-4758718-Neymar_has_signed_for_Paris_Saint_Germain_on_a_five_year_contrac-a-1_1501795916564.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain have smashed the world transfer record by completing the €222 million signing of Neymar from Barcelona on a five-year contract. The Brazilian had been continually linked with a move away from Camp Nou over the summer, and had declined to clarify his own future as the PSG rumours grew stronger.

And after weeks of denials, mixed messages and reports, he has finally been confirmed as the Ligue 1 club's latest signing on Thursday night."Paris Saint-Germain are very pleased to announce the arrival of Neymar Jr," the Parisiens said in a statement on their official website.

"The Brazilian attacker signed a five-year contract in the presence of club and player representatives. Neymar Jr is now tied to the club of the capital until June 30, 2022."

Earlier on Thursday, La Liga attempted to derail the deal by refusing to accept the €222m payment from Neymar's lawyer, but his representatives paid direct to Barcelona instead. In the late afternoon Barcelona confirmed they had accepted the bid and a transfer of a player they bought four years ago looked certain.

The fee, equivalent to Neymar's buyout clause, shatters the existing record of €105m, set last year by Paul Pogba.PSG's new star went for over double the price paid out by Manchester United for the ex-Juventus midfielder, setting a new precedent in world football.
Neymar emerged as a teenage wonderkid at Santos, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2011 before switching Brazil for Catalunya. After moving to Camp Nou in 2013 the Brazilian hit 105 goals in 186 games for Barca, forming part of the formidable MSN forward line alongside Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

Having gone trophyless in his debut season Neymar celebrated the treble in 2014-15, adding a further Liga and two Copa del Rey trophies in the following two campaigns as well as a host of other team and individual titles.
