Inter 1 Genoa 0: Late D'Ambrosio header snatches victory for Spalletti's side

    wire-1407425-1506272378-256_634x391.jpg

Danilo D'Ambrosio was the unlikely hero for Inter as they battled to a 1-0 win at home to nine-man Genoa in Serie A on Sunday, moving two points behind leaders Napoli and Juventus.

Luciano Spalletti's men won their first four matches of the new campaign, but after drawing with Bologna on Tuesday they seemed to have failed to break a stubborn Genoa side down at the San Siro until D'Ambrosio's decisive late impact.

Marcelo Brozovic struck the post for Inter in the last minute of a lacklustre first half and Genoa had narrowly been the better of the two sides before the break. The visitors had plenty of chances of their own to win it, teenage forward Pietro Pellegri wasting the best of their opportunities with a diving header from Davide Biraschi's right-wing cross.

But Genoa's resistance crumbled from a basic set-piece with three minutes to go, D'Ambrosio rising highest to nod in Joao Mario's deep left-wing corner, then Stephane Omeonga and Adel Taarabt were both dismissed as Ivan Juric's men lost all composure in the closing moments.Spalletti has continually played down his side's Scudetto chances but, on this evidence, they could challenge for a first Serie A title since 2009-10.

Inter wanted a response after the disappointment of dropping their first points of the season against Bologna and Ivan Perisic almost gave them the lead in the first minute, but the winger's dipping volley landed on the roof of the net.

The hosts were struggling to get going and they were indebted to captain Mauro Icardi for a fine challenge on Pellegri, the striker tracking back into his own box to deny the 16-year-old.

Pellegri had an even better chance after 38 minutes but, with Milan Skriniar stretching to clear, the teenager took his eye off the ball and sent his diving header wide of the post.

Taarabt was pulling the strings for Genoa and the Moroccan forced a fine save from Samir Handanovic, the Inter goalkeeper diving to his left to turn the drive away.

That warning shot seemed to wake Inter up and they struck the woodwork moments before the break as Brozovic beat Mattia Perin with a 20-yard strike, only to be denied by the goalkeeper’s left-hand post.

Chances continued to flow after the interval, Omeonga making excellent ground and cutting inside off the right flank to cross for Diego Laxalt, who fired a first-time shot over the crossbar.

Spalletti turned to Eder on the hour mark, the Italy international replacing Antonio Candreva, but Genoa remained firm at the back, Perin beating away Brozovic's drive.Perin saved again from Brozovic after 69 minutes, before the suddenly busy goalkeeper tipped away a ferocious Eder shot.

As the game opened up Handanovic had to be alert to deny Omeonga and the opening goal finally arrived with three minutes to go.Joao Mario's corner reached D'Ambrosio at the back post and the defender nodded the ball across goal to break the deadlock for his side.

Genoa had deserved a draw on balance but they ended the game in disarray with two quick red cards as Omeonga was sent off for dragging down Eder with the striker through on goal, before Taarabt saw red for a horrible challenge on Yann Karamoh.

Sampdoria 2 AC Milan 0: Duvan Zapata claims family bragging rights

    wire-1407417-1506272373-298_634x480.jpg

Sampdoria condemned AC Milan to back-to-back away defeats in Serie A as Duvan Zapata and substitute Ricky Alvarez sealed a deserved 2-0 victory.

Before returning to his former club, Vincenzo Montella declared his Milan squad to be "fired up" and ready to "raise the bar" during a testing set of fixtures that places Roma and the first derby of the season against Inter next on their domestic agenda.

Although the Rossoneri averted the embarrassment they suffered the last time they played a team stationed in the top half of Serie A – a 4-1 loss at Lazio this month – they failed to live up to that billing in a largely listless outing at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Duvan Zapata – playing against his cousin Cristian Zapata in the Milan defence – passed up a pair of excellent chances as Montella's men wobbled during the opening stages but claimed a chunk of family bragging rights by chesting down and smashing home emphatically form close range in the 72nd minute.Former Inter forward Alvarez was only introduced in injury time but he stepped up to make the points safe for Marco Giampaolo's unbeaten side.

An untimely slip compounded a wretched day for Cristian Zapata and the Argentine slammed a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Referee Paolo Valeri awarded a penalty to Sampdoria in the second minute but correctly overturned the call after a VAR review – Ivan Strinic's cross having struck Franck Kessie's elbow when the midfielder's arm was tucked close to his side.

Despite their reprieve, Milan were unable to assert themselves during the opening stages of the contest and were grateful for Duvan Zapata's wastefulness with a couple of headed chances.

The striker failed to get enough power on a 13th-minute effort after peeling away from Leonardo Bonucci and he made even less effective contact when Lucas Torreira's excellent in-swinging corner found him unmarked four minutes later.Duvan Zapata got in behind the Milan defence down the left-hand side in the 37th minute, although Gianluigi Donnarumma repelled the shot when he cut inside.

Indecision from Sampdoria defender Gianmarco Ferrari almost gave the visitors a scarcely deserved lead during first-half stoppage time, but goalkeeper Christian Puggioni was out bravely to thwart Ricardo Rodriguez.

The same pattern of play resumed after the break, with Samp captain Fabio Quagliarella dragging wastefully wide, having sprung the offside trap with Duvan Zapata well-placed for the cutback.Milan's front two, largely starved of service, combined in the 57th minute – Suso curling off target from Nikola Kalinic's lay-off.

Kalinic played Kessie into the Sampdoria box and the Ivory Coast international looked poised to open the scoring, but Torreira got back superbly with a forceful and vital challenge.

Milan were enjoying their best period of the match and Kalinic blazed over on the end of Rodriguez's cross 20 minutes from time, but they soon found themselves on the end of a pivotal blow.Bonucci was unable to cut out Bartosz Bereszynski's cross from deep on the right and Cristian Zapata's attempted headed clearance went straight to his relative, who made no mistake on this occasion.

Montella sent on playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and forwards Patrick Cutrone and Fabio Borini in an attempt to salvage the situation, but none of them could match Alvarez's instant impact.

Montella insists AC Milan 'project' should not be written off

Vincenzo Montella said AC Milan's determination was found wanting in Sunday's Serie A defeat to Sampdoria, but he refused to write off their season at this early stage.

Milan were beaten for the second time in the league on Sunday as Duvan Zapata and Ricky Alvarez secured a 2-0 win for the home side at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

And Montella, who was returning to his former club, was critical of Milan's display, claiming no single player performed to the expected level though he believes with work the season can be saved.

"We didn't like the performance. We were insufficient both in determination and quality," Montella told Mediaset Premium."We were still in the game even if Samp had several chances in the first half, but we didn't have mental clarity and we have to figure out why.

"Nobody put in a good performance. We are still a work in progress. We've got a lot of talent in the side, so more work is needed going forward. This is not a project that can be written off already. "I was disappointed by the performance and we need to work out why it happened. We were psychologically running on empty.

"Perhaps, for some, the third game in seven days was a problem, but we need to analyse the situation."Montella had selected Cristian Zapata to deal with the threat of Duvan, but the Samp forward pounced on his cousin's poor defensive header to net the opener and he believed it was a deserved win.

"I think we deserved this victory, we fought to the end and must continue in the vein of this performance," Duvan Zapata said. "It was wonderful to score today and play well."

Dybala says goal-shy Higuain 'just needs to relax'

Paulo Dybala has encouraged struggling Juventus strike partner Gonzalo Higuain to relax and trust the goals will come. The Bianconeri have won their first six Serie A games this season, with their latest victory a 4-0 defeat of rivals Torino on Saturday.

While Dybala has enjoyed a sensational start to the campaign - plundering 10 goals in those matches, including a brace against Juve's city rivals - Higuain has scored only twice and was dropped to the bench for the clash at Allianz Stadium.

But Dybala believes his fellow Argentine will find his form again, himself having similarly suffered at the beginning of the previous season."It's not a great period for [Higuain] because, for a striker, clearly, it's not nice when you don't score," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"He just needs to relax and the goal will come when he least expects it. I was struggling to score at the start of last season, too, but as soon as you break the ice, you keep on going."

Dybala may be enjoying a fine run, but he insists trophies mean more to him than his goal tally as Juve look to repeat last season's Serie A and Coppa Italia successes and go one better in the Champions League.

"Goals are great, but the important thing is to win trophies with the team," he said.
"We want to go all the way in all three tournaments again, albeit changing the [Champions League] final result."

Arsenal 2 West Brom 0: Lacazette double enough for Gunners as Barry breaks Premier League record

    44B5C05800000578-0-image-a-44_1506367781245.jpg

Arsenal moved into seventh place in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over West Brom on Monday.Alexandre Lacazette scored both goals at the Emirates Stadium to give Arsene Wenger's side a third league win of the season and a seventh in a row at home to the Baggies.

Tony Pulis' side won the last meeting between these teams in March and had their chances to claim at least a share of the spoils, with Jay Rodriguez hitting the post and Jake Livermore failing to convert the rebound before Lacazette headed in the opener.

West Brom, for whom Gareth Barry made a record 633rd Premier League appearance, continued to threaten an unconvincing Arsenal defence but their lack of composure in attack was compounded when Lacazette's penalty doubled the lead.

The goal made the Gunners' club-record signing the first man to score in his first three Premier League matches at home and allowed them to ease to the win, which lifts them back to within six points of league leaders Manchester City. They now turn their attentions to Thursday's Europa League trip to Belarus, where they will meet BATE in their second Group H match.

Alexis Sanchez, starting in support of Lacazette in attack, flashed a free-kick narrowly wide of the right-hand post early on but West Brom should have taken the lead inside 10 minutes.

Rodriguez raced in behind Shkodran Mustafi, who floored him with a poorly timed tackle inside the penalty area, but the forward chose to play on and saw a low shot tipped onto the post by Petr Cech, before Livermore scuffed the rebound wide.

It was a miss for which West Brom were made to pay. From another free-kick, Sanchez saw a shot tipped onto the crossbar by Ben Foster, allowing Lacazette to head home the rebound and become the first Arsenal player to score in his first three home league appearances since Brian Marwood in September 1988.

The Gunners were comfortably in control but Rodriguez missed a terrific chance to snatch an equaliser before half-time, heading Grzegorz Krychowiak's cross beyond Cech only to see Nacho Monreal hook his rather weak effort off the line.

West Brom's pressure continued and Rodriguez again failed to convert from close range after Barry cushioned a header back into his path, but only a timely block from former Arsenal man Kieran Gibbs stopped Lacazette slotting home his second of the match five minutes after the break.

Arsenal began to assume greater control and they were rewarded for their more positive approach with 66 minutes played. Allan Nyom bundled Aaron Ramsey over near the byline after the Wales man surged past him into the box, allowing Lacazette to fire his penalty just past Foster's reach and into the bottom-right corner - the Gunners' 100th converted spot kick in the Premier League.

Nyom sarcastically applauded Bobby Madley's decision, with West Brom players clearly still aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty of their own in the same area, and their resistance appeared to have been broken at last as the hosts cruised through the closing minutes to claim the points.

Kane: I use Ronaldo and Messi as motivation

Tottenham star Harry Kane revealed he used Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as motivation to be among the world's best.Kane, 24, has made another bright start to the campaign with six goals in seven games in all competitions.

The England international has reached the 30-goal mark in two of the past three seasons and netted 28 in the other, leading to discussions over where he stood among the world's best forwards.

Kane said being compared to Real Madrid star Ronaldo and Barcelona maestro Messi gave him plenty of motivation."I use it," he told reporters."With social media these days it's difficult to stay away from it.

"I want to be one of the best players in the world, so when people put it up and I see I am close to those players, it is a great incentive to get closer and go to the next step."

Kane was labelled a one-season wonder after his 21-goal Premier League campaign in 2014-15. But he has proven those critics wrong and the forward, whose team visit APOEL in the Champions League on Tuesday, said he was only getting better."It's kind of down to growing up, getting older and more mature, filling out in my body," Kane said.

"I feel stronger holding off defenders maybe better than I was before. I eat well, I recover well. That is what it is all about."Your football career is a short career so you have to make the most of every week and every day. That is what I try and do and when I am old enough to retire and go and play golf that is what I will do."At the moment it is just about using every day, especially with the amount of games we play, to recover, eat healthy and go from there."

Real Madrid injuries will make no difference, says Bosz

Borussia Dortmund boss Peter Bosz does not expect Real Madrid to be any weaker in Tuesday's Champions League clash despite their injury concerns.

Midfielder Toni Kroos is back for the trip to Signal Iduna Park but Marcelo, Karim Benzema, Mateo Kovacic and Theo Hernandez are all sidelined.

Madrid have endured a shaky start to their LaLiga title defence, winning only three of their opening six matches, while their quest to win a third Champions League in a row started with a less-than-convincing 3-0 win over APOEL.

Dortmund lost to Tottenham on matchday one but have won five of their six Bundesliga matches this season and boast a formidable record against Madrid, having not lost any of the last six meetings in Germany. That record, combined with Zidane's injury worries, has prompted some to make BVB favourites but Bosz is expecting a stern test.

"I don't think Madrid are not good enough because of their injuries," he told a news conference. "They have enough good players. They won't be any worse."I like to watch Real Madrid. I like technical players. Since Zidane's been there, they've had this kind of player and I like this way of playing football."

Midfielder Mario Gotze likewise anticipates a difficult match but says Dortmund's high-intensity football under Bosz has him brimming with confidence.

"They've always been great matches against Real Madrid. We know about their situation. It'll be a good game," he said."We're looking forward to a tough game and we have a lot of respect for them. We're in very good form and we'll have a lot of self-belief.

"The team is particularly good at pressing. I've never experienced it like this. You can see from our results in the Bundesliga that this is a very good idea, which I can identify with. I like having the ball, so it's good for a midfielder."Bosz, however, has warned his side to be smart in the way they approach the match against the 12-time champions of Europe."It's possible to play an aggressive pressing game against Real Madrid. But we have to do it in a good way," he added.

Conte: I will return to Italy for sure

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte insists he will return to manage in Italy in the distant future, as he misses his homeland.Conte took over at Stamford Bridge in 2016, and led the Blues to the Premier League title in his debut season in charge.

The job marks his first outside of Italy, having previously managed Arezzo, Bari, Atalanta, Siena, Juventus and the Italian national team.Conte also spent his entire playing career in the country, playing for Lecce and Juve, and the 48-year-old is hoping to one day head back to Serie A. Speaking to Radio Rai, he said: "I have nostalgia for Italy. I did not have it in my head to stay abroad for so long.

“Once I have had some more nice experiences I will return to Italy, for sure. I don’t know when, but the goal is to do that.
“Foreseeing the future is always difficult. Ours is the most precarious work as you are in one place today and tomorrow you are in another.“I have the will to finish a project, and then look for the right continuation of that.“The English experience has greatly enriched me, and I’d like to carry on as a sporting director in the future.”

Zidane has faith in Real Madrid style despite underwhelming La Liga opening

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane says his confidence in the players and the team's style has not waned despite their difficult start to the season.

A return of just three wins from their first six La Liga games has seen the champions fall seven points behind Barcelona in the table, while their opening Champions League win against APOEL came despite a somewhat unconvincing display.

Madrid take on Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at Signal Iduna Park, where they have never managed to win in European competition, and the form of Peter Bosz's side has left many predicting a victory for the Bundesliga leaders.Zidane, however, insists he believes in what Madrid are doing and says their domestic struggles are largely because La Liga is the most difficult league in the world.

"We're okay. We got a victory last time out and we're happy to play on a beautiful pitch, where they breathe Champions League football," he told a news conference."It's true we've never won here and it's a challenge for us. We want to play a good game of football.

"I'm not worried about conceding chances against the opposition. What worries us is playing good football, but the opponents are there to put you in difficulty. "I believe in what we're doing and the players we have. If we score goals tomorrow, great, but we have to keep doing the same at the weekend."LaLiga is the most complicated, the most difficult. For us, the difficulty is maintaining a high level.

"It can happen that we're not brilliant, but I am not worried about how we will play this year."Toni Kroos is back in the squad after recovering from injury and Zidane says the Germany star looks to be in good condition ahead of the game."Kroos looks good and we know his importance to the team," he said.

Gerard Deulofeu and Nelson Semedo have both been brought back into the Barcelona squad for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Sporting CP.The players were rested for Saturday's LaLiga win over Girona but are in Ernesto Valverde's 18-man squad for the trip to Portugal.

However, striker Paco Alcacer has been left out, having not made an appearance for the club since August 28.
There is also no place for midfielder Arda Turan, who recently returned from injury, but goalkeeper Adrian Ortola is back after being given the medical all-clear.
Barca head into the match looking to make it two wins from two in Group D, having beaten Juventus 3-0 at Camp Nou on matchday one.

Neymar made a good choice moving to PSG - Malcom

Bordeaux starlet Malcom believes that countryman Neymar was wise to leave Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain.The 25-year-old striker’s €222 million move from Camp Nou was the highlight of a remarkable summer transfer window but attracted criticism from many quarters due to the size of the fee involved.

Nevertheless, Malcom, who signed for the Garonne side in January 2016 from Corinthians, believes it was a smart move on the part of the superstar.

"Neymar made a good choice coming to France," he said. "We're happy for him. I hope he can be happy in Paris. May he bring happiness and score a lot of goals.... just not against Bordeaux!"With Neymar's arrival, the French championship grew in visibility. There's more people watching it."

Experience has told him about the competitive nature of matches in Ligue 1, and he has warned Neymar that he will not get an easy ride — but he does expect the forward to lead PSG to glory.

"There are no easy games in Ligue 1 — it's the same as in Brazil: Chapecoense can beat Corinthians, Vitoria can beat Sao Paulo... so there's no easy game," he said."Last year Monaco showed great concentration to win the title. Now, with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, I think PSG have a better chance of winning the title. But there are other teams fighting for it. The one most focused will be the Ligue 1 champiom."

Malcom has drawn attention in France, leading to speculation he could be Ousmane Dembele’s replacement in Dortmund, though Bordeaux reportedly rebuffed several approaches from the German side.

"I was calm," he said. "My head was never on Dortmund or any other club. My head is with Bordeaux, I'm focused on Bordeaux. I'm very happy, focused on my work and all I want is to give consistently."One target for the 20-year-old, who has made a name for himself by scoring spectacular long-range goals, is to make his international debut. But he is insistent it's a long-term goal and not an honor that will come because of any individual match — even Saturday's clash with PSG.

"Those kinds of games won’t poke Tite," he said. "I won’t become a national team player because of a single game, it will be due to my entire season. I'm calm."There's no way I’m the Neymar of Bordeaux. Malcom is focused on his work, on the group of players. The squad is very united, focused and hoping to reach our objectives."

Pulis rounds on 'cheating' Alexis Sanchez amid Rodriguez penalty row

Tony Pulis accused Alexis Sanchez of diving and insisted Jay Rodriguez should have had a penalty in West Brom's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.A double from Alexandre Lacazette sealed the win for the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium and moved them back to within six points of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

There was a controversial moment in only the eighth minute when Rodriguez, having been brought down by Shkodran Mustafi in the Arsenal penalty area, got back to his feet and saw a shot tipped onto the post by Petr Cech, before Jake Livermore missed the rebound.

Pulis was far from pleased to see referee Bobby Madley refuse to award a spot-kick and felt Rodriguez was punished for being "honest", given that Sanchez had earlier won a free-kick in a dangerous position after going to ground following minimal contact from Craig Dawson."Everybody's seen what happened," the West Brom boss told Sky Sports . "If you want to make an example of something, with Sanchez, the first free-kick he gives on the edge of the box, he should be booked for diving.

"Then you see the tackle in the box on Jay, the referee has got a great view and it's a stonewall penalty."It's not only a foul, the player could be sent off as well. So it could be a penalty and them down to 10 men.

"Jake should score the rebound and we should score other goals, but the disappointing thing is Sanchez falls for the first free-kick and he should be booked. That's cheating.

"Jay is very, very honest and doesn't get any reward for being honest. We haven't had a penalty at this football club for over and a year and none of my players are told to roll around."The great thing is everyone has seen it and I don't have to talk about it, and I don't want to talk about it. I thought we played really well, we missed a lot of chances in the first half. We're disappointed."

Rodriguez insisted there was definite contact from Mustafi and defended his refusal not to make more of the incident at the time."I felt contact and obviously went down. It wasn't given, I got back up because I wasn't hurt and saw a chance to score and Cech made a good save," he said.
"For me, it was a penalty. It's disappointing.

"I'm not going to be rolling round and trying to buy free-kicks if it's not a free-kick. There was a decision there to be made and it's one of those things."If you get the goal, you're 1-0 up and it changes the game. We've got to move on and I thought we did well in the end."

Lacazette's second goal came from the penalty spot after Aaron Ramsey was bundled over by Allan Nyom in the same area, but the Wales midfielder felt the referee got his decisions right."I was up the other end of the pitch. I didn't quite see what happened but I'm sure there was contact, but the referee played advantage," Ramsey said of the West Brom appeals.

He added on Nyom's foul: "I thought I took it round him and he pushed me out the way. I think it was a penalty."

:D:DMourinho avoids FA punishment after being sent off at Southampton

Jose Mourinho will face no further action from the Football Association after being sent to the stands during Manchester United's 1-0 win over Southampton.

Mourinho was asked to leave the touchline by Craig Pawson during second-half injury time at St Mary's on Saturday, after fourth official Mike Jones pulled him back for encroaching on to the edge of the pitch.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho was none the wiser over the referee's decision.
"I don't know [what happened]," he said. "Craig told me to leave, and I left."
