Ribery limps out of Bayern clash with suspected knee injury

Bayern Munich will wait nervously for the results of medical tests on Franck Ribery after the winger was forced off on Sunday with a suspected knee injury. Ribery, who has suffered a succession of serious injuries over the last few years, limped off against Hertha Berlin 62 minutes into the encounter.

The France international stretched his leg out in an attempt to control the ball, but ended up treading on it and falling to the ground in pain immediately before being replaced by Kingsley Coman.

While Bayern are yet to comment on the injury, the 34-year-old is feared to have suffered a serious problem. Kingsley Coman entered for Ribery, who left the Hertha pitch accompanied by two assistants.

Man Utd don't miss Pogba, says Mourinho

Manchester United do not even think about Paul Pogba and their other injured players while they are out of action, according to Jose Mourinho.

Pogba has been unavailable since September 12, when he hobbled off with a hamstring problem against Basel in the Champions League, an issue manager Mourinho has since revealed will keep the midfielder out "long-term".

But United have impressed without him, with their 4-0 home Premier League win over Crystal Palace making it seven consecutive victories across all competitions.

And Mourinho thinks complaining about having key players out would suggest United do not trust their replacements to impress, which is not the case."We never miss the players that are injured," Mourinho told reporters when asked about United's dominant form even without Pogba.

"That is our way of thinking. They are injured, we don't think about them."It is an opportunity and a moment for others to step up and get the chance, so I think that is good."When we moan all the time about injuries it looks like we don't trust the other people and we have to."

Mourinho insists not enough games have passed to judge whether United look like they can be another of his title-winning teams. "It's too early, it's too early - only seven matches," he said.United play Liverpool at Anfield after the international break on October 14.

Zidane hails Isco: 'He plays as if it's a kick-about'

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane lauded Isco after the attacker's brace led his side to a 2-0 win over Espanyol in La Liga on Sunday.Isco struck in either half to inspire Madrid to their first home league win of the campaign, but they are still seven points behind leaders and rivals Barcelona.

Zidane praised the 25-year-old for his approach, and the Frenchman expects the Spain international to get better."He's looking very confident. He knows how important he is to Real Madrid," he said.

"He plays as if it's a kick-about and I like that. He keeps going and if things don't come off for him, he's patient and he doesn't panic."He's comfortable out on the pitch, with his team-mates, and I'm thrilled that we're seeing the best of Isco more and more."

Madrid are fifth in the table after their slow start to the season, with Barca holding a five-point advantage at the top. Zidane said the La Liga title fight would come down to much more than just another Madrid-Barcelona battle.

"It's true that this league campaign is going to be very difficult. I don't think it's going to be a fight between two or three teams," he said."It's good for the competition because we realise that it is the most difficult in the world and there will be more competition this year."The teams have strengthened well and play very well, the games are going to be more complicated and more entertaining."

Man Utd legend Van der Sar steps down from Ajax post

Edwin van der Sar has stepped down from his position as chairman of Ajax’s so-called "technical heart’", but remains general manager. The iconic goalkeeper returned to his former club in a marketing director role in 2012.He was later promoted to an executive position in 2016.

The Manchester United great forms part of a strong contingent of ex-players pulling in the strings in Amsterdam, with the "technical heart" formed by the legendary Johan Cruyff in 2011.

Marc Overmars, who is responsible for transfer policy and scouting, Said Ouaali, the head of youth development, and Dennis Bergkamp, assistant coach, remain part of that set-up.Van der Sar has, however, opted to focus his attention in other areas, telling the club’s official website: "At Ajax, our youth department is crucial and it's important that the players we educate will get a chance to become part of our first team.

“However, we can't solve everything with players from our own youth department, so scouting and the transfer policy become more important.

“Many other clubs have a technical director, but we still believe that a triarchy like our technical heart is the best for our club. And as a general manager, I remain ultimately responsible.”Overmars will now lead weekly meetings of the technical heart.Bergkamp will continue to be a bridge between the academy and senior ranks, while Ouaali’s role is unchanged.

Ajax have endured a tough start to the 2017-18 campaign, collecting four wins and 13 points from their opening seven fixtures.Despite sitting sixth at present and struggling for consistency, they are only five points adrift of early leaders PSV.

They did collect a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Heerenveen in their last outing prior to the international break, but must now wait until October 14 before returning to domestic action with a home date against Sparta Rotterdam.

Relief for Man Utd as Belgium offer positive Lukaku injury update

Manchester United will be relieved to hear that a scan on Romelu Lukaku’s ankle has revealed "no fracture or structural damage".

The in-form striker, who has netted 11 times in 10 games since joining the Red Devils for £75 million over the summer, is away on international duty with Belgium. He was unable to take part in training with his country on Monday, sparking fears that he could be sidelined through injury.

Belgium quickly announced that the 24-year-old would be undergoing further tests, and they have offered a positive update following those medical examinations.

A statement released by the national team read: "Romelu Lukaku underwent an MRI scan but no fracture or structural damage has been diagnosed."The next days he will follow an individual training program. It is however too early to state that he won't be match fit for the Bosnia and/or Cyprus game."

Belgium are not due to be in action until Saturday, when they take in a World Cup qualifier with Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are then due to face Cyprus on October 10.

Lukaku is not needed by Roberto Martinez’s side in those contests, with their place at next summer’s showpiece in Russia already secured. They will, however, have been hoping to call on him at some stage and provide him with an opportunity to keep his prolific run going.United, though, will be eager to ensure that a key man is returned to them ready to slot straight back into their starting XI.

Jose Mourinho is already having to contend with an untimely injury to Paul Pogba, with the £89m midfielder ruled out "long-term" with a hamstring complaint. The Red Devils could do without picking up any more knocks as they will return to domestic action on October 14 with a crunch clash against old adversaries Liverpool.

With Belgium refusing to rule Lukaku out of their upcoming fixtures, that would suggest that a period of rest is all that is required to get the powerful frontman back up to speed and ready to lead the line once again.

Viera: Pique is committed to Spain

Gerard Pique is committed to Spain and should not be doubted, international team-mate Jonathan Viera said.

Pique was jeered by fans during a training session, with the Barcelona defender criticised for his support of the Catalan independence referendum.Viera, who was added to the squad on Monday, backed Pique and said the 91-time Spain international should be respected.

"Everybody has their thoughts and freedom of opinion. If he thinks that way, we just have to respect it," the Las Palmas attacker said."If he's here with us it's because he is committed to the national team.

"He's been coming for years and doing things right so we shouldn't cast doubt on him."Viera could earn his first international cap after being called into the squad for World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Israel.

The 27-year-old said he was thrilled to be given the opportunity, one he never expected.
"The truth is that I wasn't expecting it, I'm very happy and excited to be here, I will give it all and learn a lot," Viera said."I've been called this morning and I was already in Madrid by chance. I'm very happy and excited to be here."

Spain are on the verge of securing their place at the 2018 World Cup, sitting three points clear atop Group G with two matches remaining.

Varane lauds Zidane: 'He has given me a lot'

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane lauded coach Zinedine Zidane for never allowing him to get into his comfort zone.Varane, 24, signed a new deal with the La Liga and European champions last week, extending his contract until 2022.

The France international hailed Zidane, saying he had learned plenty from working with his countryman."He has given me a lot, in my attitude, in my play and in the risks that I take," Varane said, via Marca.

"He is someone that doesn't allow me to remain in my comfort zone, he has a lot of experience and it is a great opportunity for me to learn from him."Varane has won two La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns, among numerous other trophies, since arriving at Madrid from Lens in 2011.

The centre-back believes he will only get better, saying: "I have my style of play and people can criticise me for that which is not a problem."I try to play to my strengths and I think I am a more rounded player now aged 24 than I was aged 18."In my position you talk about a mature player being around 28 and it is normal that you improve."

I'm no king slayer – Hummels hits out after Ancelotti sacking

Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has hit out at being labelled a "king slayer" in the wake of Carlo Ancelotti's sacking as head coach of Bayern Munich.

The Italian was dismissed last week following his side's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in France, with assistant Willy Sagnol placed in charge on an interim basis.

President Uli Hoeness later claimed five senior players had turned against Ancelotti, making his position at the Allianz Arena untenable.

Hummels was surprisingly left out of the starting line-up for that defeat in Paris, prompting rumours he was among those to have fallen out with the former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss. However, Hummels says such accusations are "out of order".

"I had no conversation with anyone to say I was dissatisfied because I didn't play in Paris," he told Bild."Five players were talked about and I cannot speak for the other four, but I haven't had a conversation about being unhappy because I wasn't playing or anything like this.

"To be called a 'king slayer' is out of order. I don't know how this information originated or if it was written because I did not play. I don't like it. I just wouldn't do that."

Hummels admits it has been difficult to adjust to the departure of Ancelotti, along with his backroom staff."It's the first time I've experienced a change in coach during the season," said the Germany international "It's a really strange feeling not having him around, but also the four other guys are no longer there."Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Hertha Berlin on Sunday in their first match since Ancelotti's exit.

:love:Mata welcomes Man Utd landmarks after joining elite Premier League club

Juan Mata enjoyed a landmark outing against Crystal Palace, as he opened his 2017-18 goal account on his 200th Premier League appearance. The Spain international arrived in English football back in 2011, when Chelsea paid Valencia £23.5 million for his services.

After FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League successes, he moved on to United in January 2014 for £37.1m.

He has become a key figure for the Red Devils, despite seeing some question his role once Jose Mourinho inherited the managerial reins, and underlined that value on Saturday in a 4-0 victory over Palace.Mata wrote in his personal blog on that outing: “Last Saturday, we defeated Crystal Palace and I was able to score my first goal of the season, after several games with a few shots against the woodwork.

“I scored just three minutes into the game in a big play by Marcus [Rashford], who sent the ball back and I managed to put it beyond the goalkeeper’s reach at first touch. “Scoring goals has always been an important aspect of my game, although I’m not a striker, and I hope to help the team again this season with as many goals as I can.

“That 1-0 [lead] came pretty soon and it helped us a lot. After a long trip back from Moscow, without much time to recover, the team showed its ambition from the very first minute.“The three points keep us on top of the table with City.

“It was my 200th game in the Premier League, I’m very proud of reaching these figures and I hope to increase them. I still need to play a few more games to catch [Gareth] Barry!”West Brom midfielder Barry recently passed United legend Ryan Giggs to top the all-time Premier League appearance chart.

Mata, at 29 years of age, is unlikely to get anywhere near the figures posted by that duo, but he certainly has plenty of football left in him as he chases down more major honours at Old Trafford.

'Serie A was easier' - Conte's title warning for defending champions Chelsea

Antonio Conte admits securing back-to-back crowns at Chelsea will be “very difficult”, with Serie A “easier” to dominate. The Italian coach enjoyed title success in each of his three seasons as head coach in Turin between 2011 and 2014.

He was able to repeat that trick during his debut campaign in England but has seen Chelsea’s rivals spend big in an effort to knock the Blues from their lofty perch.Conte concedes that defending the crown will be tough, with the English top-flight considerably more competitive than its Italian equivalent.

“I see the commitment every day, but for sure to defend the title is very difficult,” he said following a 1- defeat to title rivals Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.“It is very difficult for every team in this league. To defend – it is very difficult to win two titles in a row.

“We won the title with Juventus and I was expecting a really strong challenge from AC Milan, but instead they sold Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to Paris St Germain, so they became weaker.“It wasn’t simple second time, but it was easier. Here, from last season to this season, you have big teams and now they are bigger.

“I think last season we did a really great job, because we won the League against a really strong team, because Man City last season also was a fantastic team.“And now after I think a great transfer market, they have improved a lot. It’s not simple to play this League.

“We have to try to do our best in every game with great ambition, because we must always have the right ambition. But at the same time sometimes you have to compliment your opponent. You must be honest and accept the result.”

Conte saw Juve pip AC Milan to the Serie A title by four points in 2011-12, before easing their way to a nine-point triumph over Napoli a year later.Chelsea are still very much in the Premier League mix this season, but defeat to City has left them in fourth spot – six points adrift of the early pacesetters.

Barcelona announce strike called for by Table for Democracy

Barcelona have announced that the club will be closed on Tuesday as they take part in a Catalan strike called for by Table for Democracy.

No players will report to training on Tuesday, while the youth teams will also be allowed to stay at home. The strike has been called after a referendum on Catalan independence ended in chaos and violence on Sunday.

Hundreds of people are said to have been injured following clashes between police and people attempting to vote on whether the region should secede from Spain, with the country's central government having declared the referendum illegal.
Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu had earlier said the police clashes had "saddened" everyone associated with the club, while defender Gerard Pique described playing in a match against Las Palmas on Sunday as the worst experience of his career.Barcelona previously took part in a "standstill" on Monday, with club employees ceasing work for 15 minutes at midday.

"By their own free will, the club's employees all stopped what they were doing and left their workplaces for a quarter of an hour," read a statement. "The same thing happened right across the FC Barcelona premises: in the club offices at Camp Nou, at La Masia, and also in the Miniestadi and Ciutat Esportiva."

Cannavaro: Milan and Inter have the resources but need time

Ex-Italy international Fabio Cannavaro said former club Inter and AC Milan need time before they can challenge for Serie A honours.Inter and Milan have taken a back seat to rivals Juventus, who are seeking a seventh successive Scudetto this term, but both clubs are hopeful of returning to the top of Italian football.

Cannavaro insisted patience is required as Inter and Milan bid to get back to the Serie A summit."They have financial resources and they will always be fighting for the biggest objectives," Tianjin Quanjian head coach Cannavaro told Premium Sport.

Lacazette: PSG is 'not where I wanted to go'

Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette revealed he held talks with French giants Paris Saint-Germain before opting to move to the Premier League.Lacazette became Arsenal's most expensive signing in a deal with Lyon reportedly worth £52.7 million in July.

The 26-year-old France international, who has scored four goals in seven Premier League appearances, said he could have remained in his homeland with PSG."We talked to PSG but I knew it was not where I wanted to go. In France, I would only play for Lyon," Lacazette told RMC Sport.

"PSG could have helped me progress because of the big players they have but I wanted to play in another league."It has been a difficult start to the season for Arsenal, though Arsene Wenger's men are seven matches unbeaten in all competitions since their 4-0 rout at Liverpool.

Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League, six points adrift of leaders Manchester City, while the Londoners have won their opening two Europa League fixtures.

"I believe in the title, whether in the Premier League or in the Europa League," Lacazette added."We have a big group, everyone gets along, it's not always the best that wins."

Ancelotti opens door to Premier League return as he plans next move

Carlo Ancelotti is open to returning to the Premier League after being linked with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham following his sacking by Bayern Munich.

The Italian was removed from his post at the Allianz Arena after overseeing a slow start to the 2017-18 campaign which culminated in a humbling 3-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ancelotti has faced accusations of losing the support of senior players from Bayern president Uli Hoeness, while Arjen Robben has been forced to refute suggestions that he was critical of the ousted coach.

Despite enduring a rare dip in his managerial career, the former Milan, Juventus, Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSG boss boasts an enviable CV.That should ensure that he is not out of work for long, and Ancelotti has conceded that he would be willing to listen to offers from England.

He told Sky Sports: "I want to manage. Not this season, maybe next season.“I have no preference, in the Premier League or at another club. The only thing I want to do is to train."

While ruling nothing out at this stage, Ancelotti’s comments confirm that he is not looking to return to the dugout just yet.He previously stated while attending a charity match in Jerusalem: “I will rest for the next 10 months, so no other teams.”

A return to Stamford Bridge could be on the cards for Ancelotti, with current Blues boss Antonio Conte having admitted that he plans to head home at some stage.

He has said: “Italy is my homeland, so once I have had some good experiences, formative experiences, important and life-changing experiences, I’ll be back. I don’t know when but that’s the aim.”

It is being suggested that such a move could happen in 2018, which would create an opening for Ancelotti. The 58-year-old is also said to be an admirer of Arsenal and would welcome the opportunity to work at Emirates Stadium if Arsene Wenger is ever moved through the exits.

Possible landing spots at Everton and West Ham have also been mooted as Ronald Koeman and Slaven Bilic have seen their positions questioned on the back of disappointing starts to 2017-18.

Ancelotti has, however, been urged to steer clear of Goodison Park by boyhood Everton fan Joey Barton. He told talkSPORT: “I heard noises about Carlo Ancelotti coming in, but what’s he going to do with that side? He still needs a centre-forward, he still needs a centre-half, he’s still got an issue at right-back.

“I wouldn’t take it if I was Ancelotti. You’ve just managed Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich… why would you want the Everton job?”

Benzema to help ease Bale blow as he prepares for Real Madrid return

Karim Benzema is poised to hand Real Madrid a timely boost by returning to action after the international break, Goal understands. The France international striker has been out of action since September 9.A hamstring injury forced him out of a La Liga clash with Levante, with initial reports suggesting that he would be sidelined for up to six weeks.

He could, however, be about to shave seven days off that.Benzema has been working hard on his rehabilitation, with positive progress made over the course of the last few days. The 29-year-old has returned to the training field in Madrid, although he has been forced to work alone away from the main group.

With those efforts continuing to be stepped up, it is expected that he will come back into Zinedine Zidane’s plans for a trip to Getafe on October 14.His return will be most welcome to the Blancos boss, who has seen several other senior stars pick up knocks.

Theo Hernandez is another to have returned to light training, but is short of match fitness, while Marcelo, Dani Carvajal and Mateo Kovacic are all unavailable at present.

Gareth Bale has now joined that list, with the Wales international adding another ailment to a lengthy list during his time in the Spanish capital. He sat out Madrid’s victory over Espanyol on Sunday, but Zidane suggested that a hamstring problem was not serious and that he could have played if required.

Bale has, however, been removed from the Wales squad after seeing a calf strain picked up by a scan.It is now being suggested that he could be out for over a month.

Madrid, then, are going to have to wait a little while longer before reforming their famed ‘BBC’ frontline.Cristiano Ronaldo has been available of late, but has been struggling for goals, so the return of Benzema should help to bring added spark to the Blancos. The Frenchman has, however, netted just once this season – in a Super Cup clash with Barcelona in August.

:)Fellaini hailed by Giggs for repaying Mourinho and silencing critics

Ryan Giggs believes former Manchester United team-mate Marouane Fellaini has proven his worth to manager Jose Mourinho.Fellaini has not always been popular at Old Trafford but he could have a big role to play in United's title push in the absence of the injured Paul Pogba .

And Giggs has been impressed by the way the midfielder, who has scored three Premier League goals this season, has risen above his critics."Marouane Fellaini has really proved his importance, stepping in for Paul Pogba," Giggs told Sky Sports .

"He has scored important goals, as he did at Everton, and I'm really pleased for him after taking a lot of stick over the years.

"I've worked with him and he's a great lad to train because he does exactly what you want. He hasn't let the fans bother him because he's always had the support of the players and the coaches.
"He is effective, knows his strengths and limitations, and he's somebody who Jose has put a lot of faith in and he has repaid that with some important goals."

Bayern Munich select new manager ... and Pep Guardiola approves

Bayern Munich have reportedly settled on a new manager, and former boss Pep Guardiola has helped advise the club on their selection. The German champions fired Carlo Ancelotti last week following a 3-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Assistant Willy Sagnol has taken over on an interim basis, and Bayern drew Hertha 2-2 on Sunday in the Frenchman's first game in charge.Bayern president Uli Hoeness has stated that the club were looking for a permanent replacement, however, meaning Sagnol's time in charge of the club was always likely to be brief.

Speculation over Ancelotti's successor has been rampant, with former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel and Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann among the favourites. Guardiola, who won three Bundesliga titles in three seasons at Bayern between 2013 and 2016, was spotted with Hoeness at a restaurant in Munich.

"I told him who we would appoint in the next few days," Hoeness told Munich newspaper AZ of Guardiola. "He was satisfied." The Manchester City boss was visiting Munich during the international break to take in Oktoberfest celebrations.

Matic confident Man Utd have 'great players' to cover Pogba absence

Nemanja Matic believes Manchester United have enough “great players” to cope without Paul Pogba, with Marouane Fellaini shining so far.The Red Devils were rocked by the news that their £89 million midfielder has been ruled out “long-term” with a hamstring injury.

Pogba has already sat out five games since being laid low in a Champions League clash with Basel.

United have fared admirably in his absence, winning all of the fixtures they have taken in, and Matic is confident that Jose Mourinho has enough strength in depth at his disposal to cover the loss of a key man.

The Serbia international told reporters: “We know that he [Pogba] will be out for some time. He’s very important for us, he’s a great player, but I am sure that he will be ready soon.“I am sure that he will recover well and he will be ready for this season to help us and to score many goals.

“Everyone knows that Paul is very important for Manchester United, but we also have great players to play instead of him.“We showed in the last few games that everyone in Manchester is ready to play and everyone can help us.”

Fellaini has been trusted with helping to fill the void, with the Belgian having netted after replacing Pogba against Basel and again in a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace last time out.

Matic said of the versatile 29-year-old, who has not always been fully appreciated during his time at Old Trafford: “He is a great player."If you see how he works every day in the training sessions, the games he played didn't surprise me -- that he played well, that he scored goals.

"He doesn't have the credit that he deserves. I don't know why. But I really enjoy playing with him, and I am sure that we will continue like this."It's nice to have him in the team because he can defend, on long balls he is strong and he's always dangerous in attack. I am sure that he will show all his quality this season."

United will need everybody to be firing on all cylinders when they return to domestic action after the international break, with Mourinho’s men set to take in a trip to Anfield to face old adversaries Liverpool.
