Guardiola says Manchester City aren't suffering from fatigue

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola dismissed concerns tiredness could prove to be the undoing of his high-flying side.City have charged 13 points clear atop the Premier League after winning 18 of 19 games while scoring 60 goals.

While their high-energy, attacking style has impressed this season, it may have an impact – including during the busy Christmas period – but Guardiola has no concerns.

"Fatigue, I don't think so. It may happen but we've a good enough squad," the Spaniard told UK newspapers.

"Gabriel [Jesus] didn't play against Bournemouth – he played 120 minutes against Leicester and he's the biggest fighter in high pressing I've seen in my life. He helps us a lot with our intensity."Danilo, Bernardo [Silva], [Ilkay] Gundogan all helped us against Bournemouth.

We have Yaya [Toure]. Last game, [Oleksandr] Zinchenko was man of the match and he was not in the squad against Bournemouth."Of course we will rotate in this period. We have a game every four days. Everyone that has played in the past is going to play in the future."

Guardiola, whose team visit Newcastle United on Wednesday, said he had a squad capable of continuing their incredible form."That's a quality of the players I had in Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now here," he said.

"We're able to convince them how good it is going forward, be aggressive, without the ball, because after that we're quick and take decisions with the ball."

:yes:Mourinho: Burnley can challenge for Europe

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes Burnley can challenge for a European place this season.Burnley have surprised in the Premier League, sitting seventh at the halfway mark of the campaign.

Ahead of welcoming Burnley to Old Trafford on Boxing Day, Mourinho praised Sean Dyche's side, backing them to push for a European spot.

"If survival was the objective, I think the objective is in the pocket, it's totally under control," he told Sky Sports News.

"If the objective is to finish top 10, they will do it. If the objective is to fight for European positions, they are there so they have the right to fight, so it'll be a difficult opponent."If you compare what they are doing with the initial objectives, it's a very good season."

Only Manchester City (12), Chelsea (14) and Manchester United (14) have conceded fewer league goals than Burnley (15) this season.Mourinho said that showed what Dyche's side – who are winless in their past two league games and have scored just 16 league goals – were all about.

"They conceded three in the last one but before that they were really amazing so they defend very, very well," he said."Everybody knows the way they play, if you expect them to play creative beautiful football, they don't do that.

"But if you talk about direct objective, pragmatic and play with their strength, I think they are very, very good."

:love:Manchester United 2 Burnley 2: Lingard double rescues Mourinho's men

    4795353100000578-5213167-image-a-78_1514307481986.jpg

Manchester United's lingering Premier League title hopes were dealt another blow despite them coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Burnley on Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho's side were facing a defeat at Old Trafford for only the second time this year thanks to first-half goals from Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour, before Jesse Lingard came off the bench to earn his side a point.

It means United have still only lost to Manchester City at home in 2017, but they will be 15 points behind the runaway Premier League leaders if Pep Guardiola's side beat Newcastle United on Wednesday.

The Red Devils endured a tough week before Christmas as they exited the EFL Cup to Bristol City before conceding a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 league draw with Leicester City, and they found themselves behind after only three minutes when Barnes capitalised on their failure to defend a free-kick.

United pushed for an equaliser, but were dealt a sucker punch when Defour, once linked with a move to the club, struck a superb free-kick before the interval.

Lingard came off the bench to flick home and give his side a lifeline, and Burnley were denied a first away league win over United since September 1962 when the England international fired home in second-half injury time.

The draw sees Burnley stay in seventh place and keeps United in second, one point above Chelsea, but the result has surely struck a hammer blow to their hopes of hauling in their neighbours at the summit.

Mourinho had branded his players "childish" after their collapse against Leicester and the way they started against Burnley would have done little to change his view.

Marcos Rojo conceded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area in only the third minute, United's defence failed to deal with the delivery and Barnes was given an easy task of drilling home from inside the six-yard box after the ball fell kindly at his feet.

The home defence looked in disarray in the early stages and Scott Arfield clipped the top of the crossbar with a volley from Johann Berg Gudmundsson's cross, after United again failed to clear their lines.

The hosts recovered from their early jitters and began to pin Burnley back, with Luke Shaw - handed a start at left-back in a league game for only the second time this season - stinging Nick Pope's hands with a strike before Paul Pogba's header was clawed away from the top corner.

But Burnley stunned Old Trafford for a second time nine minutes before the break, when Defour curled a sublime free-kick into the top-left corner from 25 yards out to double the visitors' lead.

United could easily have snatched at least one goal back before the break, with Ben Mee clearing brilliantly off the line after Marcus Rashford had beaten Pope, with Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also coming close.

Mourinho reacted at the break by bringing on Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the ineffective Ibrahimovic and Rojo, and the England man missed a glorious chance to snatch a goal back moments after entering the fray, as he turned the ball off Pope and onto the crossbar when unmarked barely three yards from goal.

Yet with 53 minutes gone, Lingard made the most of his second chance, steering Ashley Young's low cross into the bottom-left corner with a sublime backheel that just eluded Pope's fingertips.

United remained camped in the Burnley half as the home fans tried to keep hope alive, with Mkhitaryan heading over the bar and Pogba firing a free-kick just too high, and the pressure finally told in the first minute of injury time when Lingard arrowed a low strike through the crowded box and into the bottom-right corner after the visitors, for once, failed to clear.

The draw is another commendable result for Burnley on the road this season, with Sean Dyche's side having beaten Chelsea and Everton and taken points away at Liverpool and Tottenham, but they – just like United – are unlikely to celebrate with much gusto.

Chelsea 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 0: Morata and Alonso ground Seagulls

    4795028F00000578-5213045-image-a-300_1514305499203.jpg

Second-half goals from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso gave Chelsea and 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion and moved the reigning Premier League champions to within a point of second-placed Manchester United.

Antonio Conte's men drew a frustrating blank in a goalless draw at Everton last time out and endured more frustration as Brighton defended impeccably during an uneventful opening 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.

It took a familiar combination to break the game open as Morata headed home from Cesar Azpilicueta's pinpoint cross 51 seconds after the restart – the sixth time the full-back has set up his Spain colleague in the Premier League this season.

Morata is now on to 10 for the campaign in the top flight and another of his compatriots, Marcos Alonso, made the points safe with his fifth as the hour arrived.

Chelsea have now won nine of their last 12 Premier League games and are on 42 points - just one behind United, who salvaged a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley, with runaway leaders Manchester City 13 points better off with a game in hand against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Morata was back from suspension to lead a Chelsea attack that had struggled against Everton and the Spain striker skilfully twisted clear of Shane Duffy to draw an early save from Mat Ryan. Conte's men should have been ahead in the 19th minute when Cesc Fabregas crossed from the right after a corner was worked short.

Antonio Rudiger propelled himself towards the ball at the back post and knockdown fell towards Tiemoue Bakayoko, but the midfielder could not adjust his feet in time and prodded tamely wide with the goal at his mercy.

Fabregas was at the heart of much of Chelsea's better work and his excellent chipped pass picked out a darting run from Victor Moses in the 26th minute, when the wing-back did not make clean contact and Ryan beat down the shot at his near post.

The Australia international had few other causes for alarm until the interval as a disciplined defensive unit protected him impressively and Morata headed high and wide under pressure in first-half stoppage time.

If Chelsea were prepared for more toil in the second period, Azpilicueta and Morata combined almost immediately after the restart to offer timely relief to their team-mates – Brighton's error coming in allowing the defender too long on the ball, with the resulting cross and header expertly executed. The home side and the Stamford Bridge crowd were suddenly buoyant and Eden Hazard almost made it two when he fizzed a shot narrowly wide.

Ryan made two fine saves in quick succession, scrambling across his goal line to touch a trademark Alonso free-kick behind in the 58th minute before denying the same player from the resulting right-wing corner. But those efforts proved soon proved in vain when Alonso met Fabregas' in-swinging delivery from the opposite flank to glance into the far corner.

Brighton almost made the most of a rare venture forward when Gary Cahill deflected Tomer Hemed's header from Solly March's cross behind but they were exposed when Chelsea broke from the corner that followed.N'Golo Kante led a charge that ended with Lewis Dunk brilliantly clearing Hazard's shot off the line.

Belgium playmaker Hazard was really starting to enjoy himself and a dazzling run past a host of defenders and beyond Ryan deserved better than Bakayoko shooting wide from the cutback.Beram Kayal fired over on the turn for Albion before Hazard departed to a standing ovation.

Veteran striker Glenn Murray came on to force a back-post save from Thibaut Courtois as Brighton, who lie 12th and four points above the relegation zone, were able to end the contest with the poise they showed at the beginning.

Watford 2 Leicester City 1: Schmeichel own goal seals comeback win

Molla Wague and Abdoulaye Doucoure inspired Watford's turnaround as the Hornets came from behind to defeat Leicester City 2-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Leicester had fought back valiantly for a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday and their impressive improvement under Claude Puel looked set to continue when Riyad Mahrez headed home midway through the first period to score for the third straight game at Vicarage Road.

But Mali defender Wague, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Foxes, marked his first Premier League start with the equaliser on the stroke of half-time in an entertaining Boxing Day clash.

Doucoure then did brilliantly to force the winner, stretching to keep Tom Cleverley's deep free-kick in play close to the byline and finding himself handsomely rewarded as Kasper Schmeichel deflected the ball over the line.

Victory was Watford's first in seven matches and leaves them 10th, two points and two places behind their opponents, who suffered only a second league defeat in eight.

The opening 15 minutes were physical and produced three bookings before Leicester carved out the first chance as Shinji Okazaki's header was tipped over by Heurelho Gomes.

Jamie Vardy, who netted his 50th Premier League goal in Saturday's dramatic draw with United, ought to have given Leicester the lead in the 26th minute but, after being put clean through by Marc Albrighton, he sent his effort over Gomes and wide.

The Foxes were not left to rue that miss for long, however, as Albrighton held off Daryl Janmaat down the left and drifted in a cross that was headed back across goal and in by Mahrez.Watford should have produced an equaliser within three minutes as Andre Carrillo slipped in Richarlison, only for the Brazilian to round Schmeichel and fire into the side-netting.

Like their opponents, Watford were quick to overcome the disappointment of a big miss as, right on the stroke of half-time, Wague converted from close range after Richarlison's acrobatic effort from a corner rebounded kindly to him.

And the Hornets almost took a lead into the interval as Richarlison's firm strike from a tight angle crashed off the near upright.Marco Silva's side did forge ahead with 25 minutes to play thanks to a goal owing much to Doucoure's persistence and Schmeichel's fumble. With eight minutes to play Ben Chilwell's mistake let in Cleverley, who wasted the chance to put the game to bed by firing narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

Leicester threw everything forward in a bid to snatch a point and only two stunning Gomes saves – throwing himself at the feet of Wes Morgan before getting down to keep out Leonardo Ulloa's header from the resulting corner – preserved Watford's win.

Bournemouth 3 West Ham 3: Controversial Wilson leveller caps six-goal thriller

Callum Wilson scored a controversial late equaliser as Bournemouth rescued a 3-3 draw in a thrilling Premier League clash at the Vitality Stadium.Wilson's stoppage-time header was initially ruled out for offside but was eventually given following discussion between referee Bobby Madley and his assistant.

Marko Arnautovic looked to have stolen the win for West Ham with a quickfire brace that did not cover Cherries goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in glory, and the Bosnian will have breathed a sigh of relief at Wilson's last-gasp leveller.

In a contest that swung one way and then the other, James Collins fired West Ham in front after seven minutes before goals from Dan Gosling and Nathan Ake turned the match on its head.Bournemouth were fortunate to have 11 players on the pitch after Simon Francis caught Cheikhou Kouyate with a high boot in the first half.

The result leaves Bournemouth in the bottom three, while West Ham sit 17th.
West Ham collected their first away win of the season at Stoke City earlier this month, and captain Collins quickly had his side on the front foot. The former Wales international shook off marker Francis to meet a corner at the front post and glance a header beyond Begovic in the Bournemouth goal.

Josh King – scorer of a hat-trick in this fixture last season – sliced wide from the centre of the box as Bournemouth squandered their chance at a swift reply, before Andre Ayew was just off target from an inviting cutback at the other end.

King was wayward once more when his next attempt came from a similar position to his first, but Adam Smith went closer by forcing Adrian into action with a dipping shot that required a touch over the crossbar.

Bournemouth eventually found the net through Gosling after Collins failed to clear his lines from a free-kick, allowing the midfielder to rifle home a finish from 12 yards.

Francis was lucky to stay on the pitch when he escaped with a yellow card after catching Kouyate with a high boot to the face shortly after the leveller, and Wilson fizzed an effort just wide early in the second half.

The turnaround was complete in the 57th minute, when a ball from deep somehow found its way to Ake in the box and the defender turned an accomplished finish beyond Adrian.

But West Ham were not done yet – Arnautovic pounced on a mistake by Begovic to pull the visitors level, with the goalkeeper having slipped on the greasy surface when dealing with a back pass.

Begovic could also have done better when he parried a Javier Hernandez strike into the path of Arnautovic for an 81st-minute goal that looked set to clinch the win for David Moyes' side.

However, Bournemouth were eventually awarded the draw by committee after Madley and his assistant collaborated to rule that the seemingly offside Wilson committed no offence in heading home the leveller, much to the anger of the visiting players.

Liverpool 5 Swansea City 0: Firmino nets double as Reds run riot

    4795C45000000578-5213315-image-m-110_1514315127046.jpg

Liverpool recaptured fourth place in the Premier League table with a comfortable 5-0 victory over rock-bottom Swansea City on Tuesday.

Tottenham's 5-2 win against Southampton earlier in the day – inspired by the hat-trick heroics of the record-breaking Harry Kane – had pushed Jurgen Klopp's men down to fifth. The hosts took a while to find their stride at Anfield, but Swansea never looked capable of a repeat of their 3-2 win in this fixture last season.

Philippe Coutinho's stunner gave the hosts the lead early on, before Roberto Firmino, who scored two in that match in January, doubled the advantage seven minutes into the second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold then netted his first Premier League goal in front of the Kop to put the match beyond Swansea and Firmino’s second made it 4-0 soon after.Alex Oxlade-Chambelain added further gloss with his maiden home strike for Liverpool

The result moves Liverpool a point clear of Spurs, while Swansea – still under the caretaker charge of Leon Britton following the sacking of Paul Clement last week – remain at the foot of the table and five points from safety.

Arriving at Anfield as the Premier League's bottom club, Swansea will not have welcomed the sight of three members of Liverpool's 'Fab Four' on the team sheet, and all of that trio were involved as the home side took the lead inside six minutes.

Jordan Ayew conceded possession to Firmino and, after the ball had been spread wide to Mohamed Salah, Coutinho stepped up to curl a magnificent finish beyond Lukasz Fabianski. While Liverpool continued to have the better of the possession, Swansea showed occasional signs of addressing their own attacking problems.

The Welsh club, who handed striker Oli McBurnie his full Premier League debut, have averaged just two shots on target per match this season but had achieved that by the 20th minute on Merseyside.

Emre Can failed to test Fabianski after Kyle Naughton's misplaced pass created an opportunity for a second Liverpool goal, before Ragnar Klavan dived in to block a McBurnie strike at the other end as Swansea settled.

Soft penalty calls for a Tom Carroll tug on Salah were correctly ignored by referee Kevin Friend, but Liverpool squandered a subsequent glorious chance to double their lead when Firmino drilled wide with time to pick his spot.

Liverpool were comfortable but needed a second goal to put the match beyond their visitors and, after Salah had an attempt saved by Fabianski, Firmino latched on to a Coutinho free-kick over the top to volley beyond the Poland international.

Alexander-Arnold's milestone goal arrived when he charged into the Swansea box, latched on to an Alfie Mawson clearance and rifled a shot of the underside of the crossbar.

Firmino made it 4-0 a minute later – Leroy Fer's poor pass back into his own half was seized upon by Salah, who squared for his Brazilian colleague to tap home.

With the win already in the bag, Oxlade-Chamberlain made the most of some questionable Swansea defending in the box to unleash a shot that flew past Fabianski and opened his own Anfield account.

Fellaini confirms Man Utd contract rejection and waits for another offer

Marouane Fellaini has confirmed he has turned down a new Manchester United contract, but expects to receive another offer. The Belgium international is out of contract at the end of the season and United boss Jose Mourinho has previously expressed concern the 30-year-old will leave for free .

Fellaini, who has made almost 150 appearances for United since a £27.5 million move from Everton in 2013, insists Mourinho has no problem with his decision to reject a new deal.

He is not ruling out signing an extension at Old Trafford, but will not rush into a quick decision regarding his future.“If Manchester United did not want me anymore, they would have said that a long time ago,” Fellaini told HUMO.

“They made me an offer, and probably another one will follow. Whether I will accept it, I don’t know. You can’t arrange something like that in an instant.“We [Fellaini and Mourinho] talked about it. The coach is someone who respects the decisions of his players.”

Several clubs have been linked with an approach for Fellaini, who has not played for United for the past month due to a knee injury.

Juventus have previously turned down the chance to sign the combative midfielder , while Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with offers.Fellaini will reach a decade of playing in the Premier League at the end of the campaign, and he is unsure if it is time to quit English football.

“Honestly, I don’t know,” said Fellaini when asked where he will play football next season. “I have something in my head, but I cannot tell you yet.“This is my 10th season in England. Except for the very first season at Manchester United, I have only known good times. Five years with Everton, five years with United.

“It always takes several years for your ties to be forged. I know everyone here, that’s nice.”

Conte: I'd always want Vidal with me

Antonio Conte would be keen to work with Arturo Vidal at Chelsea, but refused to comment on rumours the Premier League club will make a move in January.Vidal and Conte won three successive Serie A titles during their time together at Juventus, and reports in Chile have suggested there could be a reunion in 2018.

The 30-year-old still has 18 months left on his contract at Bayern Munich, though, and remains a regular first-team player under Jupp Heynckes – Vidal scoring five Bundesliga goals in 14 appearances this season

That has not stopped the speculation linking him with a switch to Stamford Bridge and, although Conte is a fan, he refused to be drawn on talk of a transfer."I must be honest, it's not right to talk about a player of another team," he said after Chelsea's 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday.

"Especially if you try to link this player with us."Arturo is a fantastic player. I have great respect for Arturo, and we spent many years in Juventus together."I'd always want him with me."

Van Dijk set for future talks amid new Man City and Barcelona links

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton will discuss the possibility of selling Virgil van Dijk in January after he was left out of the clash with Tottenham Hotspur amid renewed links to Manchester City, Liverpool and Barcelona.

The centre-back was denied a move in the summer despite submitting a transfer request after attracting interest from Pep Guardiola's side and Liverpool, and he was subsequently exiled from the first team until September.Van Dijk has been key for the Saints since then, but the approaching winter transfer window has reignited reports that a big move is imminent.

The Telegraph in the UK reported on Tuesday that City are expected to complete a £60 million move for the 26-year-old next month, while Sport in Spain claims Barca are hoping to land him.

The ex-Groningen star was absent for Southampton's Boxing Day game with Spurs, but Pellegrino was quiet when asked why he would not feature at Wembley.

"With Virgil, there is a lot of speculation, but we have to wait and see until January and then we can talk," he told Sky Sports.Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he did not know what would happen with Van Dijk going into the new year.

"We have to wait until January. I can't control the market, so we'll see what happens," he told reporters after a demoralising 5-2 defeat without Van Dijk at Wembley.

"I decided it's best for the team and there has been a lot speculation."The manager decides what is the best. We win, draw and lose with and without Virgil.

"In this squad, I have a lot of players that can play. We are used to changes. We can't use this performance as an excuse."Pellegrino, whose side have now won just once in their last 11 top-flight matches, also addressed whether the club's decision to rebuff Liverpool's earlier interest in Van Dijk had ultimately placed his first season in charge at St Mary's under a cloud.

"We tried to do the best for the team," said the ex-Alaves coach, who endured sections of the travelling Southampton support at Wembley signing "you're getting sacked in the morning"."The board decided to try to keep our best player at the club.

"This situation is a big learning curve for everybody and now we decide what is the best for the club."He's part of our club and he's an important player for us, but we'll see what happens. I can't control the whispers and news from outside."The Netherlands international joined the St Mary's outfit in 2015 from Celtic, where he scored 15 goals in 115 first-team appearances.
