Swansea City 0 Tottenham 2: Llorente scores on return as Spurs weather the storm

    47B4376E00000578-0-image-a-71_1514925152763.jpg

Fernando Llorente came back to haunt former side Swansea City as he started in place of Harry Kane and scored the opener in Tottenham's 2-0 win at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday.

Llorente left Swansea for Spurs at the start of the season and was making a first league start for his new side due to Kane's recent illness, scoring early on before Dele Alli doubled the advantage with a fortuitous effort in the closing stages on a sodden evening in south Wales.

The pouring rain meant the pitch was not exactly ideal for a considered, passing approach, so it came as little surprise to see the breakthrough arrive via a free-kick, as Llorente headed in a pinpoint delivery from an offside position that went unpunished.Chances were fairly rare for the remainder of the first half, but Luciano Narsingh, Jordan Ayew and Mike van der Hoorn all went close as Swansea rallied after the break.

However, Alli's 89th-minute effort ended Swansea hopes and Spurs secured a win that takes them back above Arsenal to fifth, while it proved to be a disappointing home debut for new Swansea coach Carlos Carvalhal.

Kane's absence did not appear to have any kind of negative impact on Spurs during the early exchanges, as the visitors wasted no time in taking control.

And the opening goal arrived after just 12 minutes, as Llorente met Christian Eriksen's left-wing free-kick with a glancing header to beat Lukasz Fabianski, despite being well offside.Swansea initially failed to produce much of a response, with Spurs remaining well on top without appearing to exert a great deal of effort.

For all Spurs' possession, however, they created precious few opportunities and the only other meaningful chance that fell their way was wasted just before the break.Another Eriksen free-kick caused havoc in the Swansea defence and Llorente rose to meet it, prodding it over from close range when it arguably made more sense to use his head.

Carvalhal introduced Luciano Narsingh – who scored the winner from the bench against Watford – as a substitute early in the second period, with Swansea looking rather more purposeful than before the break. The visitors survived a scare when Davinson Sanchez caught Martin Olsson late and avoided a second booking, only to be withdrawn for the returning Victor Wanyama soon after.

Swansea's first genuine chance then fell to Narsingh in the 65th minute, blasting at Lloris from a tight angle after being played through by Renato Sanches. And two more glorious opportunities went their way shortly after – Ayew thwarted at the last second by Wanyama after evading challenges from Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris, before Van der Hoorn hit the post with a header from the resulting corner.

But Swansea's onslaught came to nothing, as Kane – a 68th-minute replacement for Llorente – produced a stunning ball over the defence to pick out Alli and the midfielder netted at the second time of asking after his initial effort came back off Fabianski to wrap up a hard-fought win.

Hazard beats De Bruyne to Belgium's 'Devil of the Year' award

Chelsea's Eden Hazard has beaten Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne to the Devil of the Year award for his performances for Belgium in 2017.

De Bruyne has played a starring role for the Premier League's runaway leaders this season, scoring six goals and setting up another nine in 21 games, but Belgium fans believe Hazard enjoyed the better year on the international stage, as they cruised to World Cup qualification.

Hazard only made five appearances for Belgium in 2017, as opposed to De Bruyne's eight, though the Chelsea star produced several fine performances, scoring three and assisting two in those games.
His outstanding displays saw him claim 10,280 votes, more than double the 4,710 that De Bruyne amassed, with Romelu Lukaku rounding off the top three with 3,223 entries.

'Intelligent' Goretzka will make the right choice, says Bayern coach Heynckes

Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes has refused to confirm reports Schalke's Leon Goretzka will join the club at the end of the season but did describe the midfielder as "a bright, intelligent boy".Goretzka is out of contract at the Veltins Arena in June and has been linked with a host of leading European clubs, including Liverpool, Barcelona and Juventus, but Marca and Sport Bild claim Bayern have stolen a march on their rivals and struck a deal with the 22-year-old.

Schalke's sporting director Christian Heidel insisted on Monday that nothing had yet been agreed and Heynckes was giving little away as he prepared to fly to Qatar with Bayern for a warm weather training camp."You'll have to wait and see," he told reporters."If I read it correctly, his manager [Jorg] Neubauer said that they have not yet decided. The Spaniards are still there in the race."

Heynckes is happy for the player to decide on his next career move, adding: "He is a bright, intelligent boy. He knows exactly what is best for himself."

Goretzka has helped Schalke to the lofty heights of second in the Bundesliga with four goals in 11 appearances this season on the back of a superb showing in Germany's Confederations Cup triumph, although a stress fracture in his lower leg has interrupted his progress of late.

Table-topping Bayern resume Bundesliga action at Bayer Leverkusen on January 12."It's a very short [break], so you have to use the time smartly - the intensity of the training [must] pick up where we left off," said Heynckes.

Also on the flight to Qatar was new Bayern signing Sandro Wagner, who has joined the club from Hoffenheim.

Darmian not for sale, says Manchester United defender's agent

Matteo Darmian has attracted interest from Serie A clubs but Manchester United do not want to sell the defender, according to his agent. The Italy international has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the transfer window, having managed only two starts in the Premier League this season.

Roma are reportedly keen to bring him to the Stadio Olimpico but Tullio Tinti says they have not made an offer and insists United want to keep him for now.

"I've not received any calls from Roma for the player," Tinti told Rete Sport. "There is contact with other teams in Serie A, but not with the Giallorossi.
"For the moment, the boy is not for sale."

Darmian has fallen behind Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw in the pecking order at full-back under Jose Mourinho. The 28-year-old was even overlooked for Monday's 2-0 win at Everton despite Valencia missing through injury and Young serving a three-match ban for violent conduct.

Darmian, who was signed from Torino in 2015, could feature in Friday's FA Cup clash with Derby County, with Mourinho expected to rotate his squad.

    Wenger charged after confronting officials

Arsene Wenger has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) after confronting the match officials in the wake of Arsenal's 1-1 draw with West Brom.

The Baggies were awarded a late penalty after Mike Dean adjudged Calum Chambers to have handled the ball in the area, and Jay Rodriguez subsequently converted to earn the home side a point at the Hawthorns.

Wenger angrily confronted Mike Dean and his match officials on the pitch, along with his goalkeeper, Petr Cech, to question the decision, while it is reported that he also entered the referees' room after the game.

That action is forbidden unless done so with express permission, and the FA has now punished the Frenchman for his actions. The FA have released the following statement: "Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been charged following the West Bromwich Albion game on Sunday [31/12/17].

"It is alleged his language and/or behaviour in the match officials' changing room after the game was abusive and/or improper and/or questioned the integrity of the match referee.

"He has until 6pm on Friday [05/01/18] to respond."Wenger could be handed a touchline ban, after he was suspended from the touchline for four matches last season after attempting to push Anthony Taylor during Arsenal's 2-1 win over Burnley in January 2017.His previous behaviour may, subsequently, count against him this time around.

Sergio Aguero: Harry Kane would have no problem playing for Real Madrid

Sergio Aguero doesn't believe that Tottenham forward Harry Kane would have any problems fitting in with Real Madrid.Rumours have been floated of a possible deal that would see Kane move to the La Liga giants, with Gareth Bale heading back to his old club in part-exchange.

Kane has been a goalscoring machine for Spurs, setting a Premier League record for goals in a calendar year with 39 in 2017, and his manager Mauricio Pochettino has come out to say that it would be impossible to put a price on his star man.

But with transfer season in full swing, the 24-year-old will undoubtedly continue to draw links with the likes of Madrid, and Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero doesn't think he would have any issues playing for the biggest clubs in the world.

"The truth is that players of this quality, I think they wouldn’t have a problem playing for such an important club as Real Madrid is," Aguero told reporters after scoring in his side's 3-1 win over Watford on Tuesday.

Aguero, who sits four goals back of Kane in the Premier League top-scorer race, dropped another hint about his future away from City, but says what the Spurs man decides to do is none of his concern. "I don’t know what he is thinking but that’s not my problem, it’s his," the Argentine said. Aguero and City are enjoying a memorable season, while Kane and Tottenham are fighting for a Champions League spot.

Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League, four points back of fourth placed Liverpool with a game in hand. However, the gap between them and Pep Guardiola's runaway leaders is an astonishing 22 points.

Spurs are back in action against West Ham on Thursday and will be hoping for Kane's return to the lineup after he sat out their win over Swansea City as he recovered from an illness.

Conte hints at openings for Luiz and Batshuayi to leave in January

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte claims he will be understanding of players who want to leave the club in search of more playing time ahead of the World Cup in Russia, but does not believe the Blues are in a position to lose players without replacements coming in.

The comments suggest that Conte will not stand in the way of the likes of David Luiz and Michy Batshuayi should either of them decide they would like to go in search of greener pastures.

Luiz has been hampered by injury this season but has also fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea, losing out to Andreas Christensen, and Batshuayi has started just two Premier League matches this term.

In Batshuayi's case, Conte has even opted to play Eden Hazard as a striker at times when he was without first option Alvaro Morata up top, claiming that the Belgian must "show me that he's better than Morata, or than Hazard" to find a place in the team.

Both players have the World Cup to look forward to, but the depth of talent in both Brazil and Belgium's squad leaves little room for players who aren't getting regular minutes. While the Chelsea boss seemed to open the door for some exits, he also made it clear that the current Blues squad was not big enough to let players leave unless new options moved in.

"I was a player, I will understand if someone is worried about the World Cup," he said. "I will understand, at the same time it’s very important to keep players very happy to stay here, to work with us and I think this must be our priority."

He added: "Our squad is not big and for this reason I think it’s impossible to send on loan one player or to sell one player if we don’t take another player.”Conte is also keen to keep players on staff who are happy with their place at the club, insisting that unhappy players lead to a poor dynamic in the dressing room and can have a negative impact on the team.

"To keep the players happy to stay with us, to continue to work with us and at the same time, I was a player and I will understand if someone is thinking in this way," he said."It’s not easy. I repeat, I prefer to have players very happy to stay here than to have players that are unhappy.

"When you are unhappy [as a player] you transfer this to the other players, to me, to my staff and I don't like this, if we can avoid this I’d like to avoid this situation."Conte and Chelsea currently sit third in the Premier League table but could climb to second with a win over sixth-placed Arsenal on Wednesday.

Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2: Bellerin belter snatches point in derby thriller

    47BC99DA00000578-5232929-image-m-93_1515015654029.jpg

Chelsea failed to move back into second place in the Premier League after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Arsenal on Wednesday thanks to Hector Bellerin's stoppage-time strike.Eden Hazard's penalty cancelled out Jack Wilshere's opener before Marcos Alonso looked to have sealed the turnaround for the champions, only for Bellerin to blast home at the death.

The result means Antonio Conte's side stay third in the table, a point behind Manchester United and 16 adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City, having won just once in their last five away league matches.

It was Wilshere who broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute with an emphatic finish but Arsenal's lead lasted only four minutes, with Hazard winning and then converting a debatable spot-kick after Bellerin sent him to ground in the box.Alonso snatched what he thought was the winner six minutes from time, but Arsenal showed great resolve to push for an equaliser and Bellerin atoned in the 92nd minute with a stunning half-volley from the edge of the area.

Chelsea still had another chance to claim all three points, but Alvaro Morata's wasteful finishing reared its head again and substitute Davide Zappacosta hit the crossbar with his follow-up.

The result will likely cause more frustration for Arsene Wenger, who was hit with an FA charge after complaining about the penalty awarded to West Brom in last Sunday's 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns, though, as it means his side stay sixth in the table, five points adrift of the top four.

Morata had the best chance of an end-to-end first 15 minutes, the Spain international racing clean through on goal after a mistake from Calum Chambers – part of a three-man defence with Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi – only to side-foot well wide of Petr Cech's left-hand post.

Alexis Sanchez was then denied by a quite brilliant save from Thibaut Courtois, who clawed the Chilean's low strike onto the right-hand post and watched it bounce back off the opposite upright before gathering up the ball.

Cesc Fabregas fired over just before the break after being teed up brilliantly by Hazard's backheel, and Cech was called upon to produce a fine double save to deny first Hazard and then Alonso five minutes into the second half.

The match was fast becoming a competition between the two goalkeepers for who could make the best stop, with Courtois blocking an Alexandre Lacazette effort superbly after the France striker got free inside the penalty area.

A moment of controversy soon followed when Wilshere, making his sixth league start in a row, went to ground easily under a challenge from Alonso, only for referee Anthony Taylor to decide against issuing what would have been a second yellow card for the midfielder.

And Chelsea frustrations were compounded in the 63rd minute, when Wilshere latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area and rifled a shot in off the top of the left-hand post for his first league goal since May 2015.

Lacazette came close moments later as Arsenal looked to push their advantage, but the Chelsea sucker-punch came quickly. Bellerin swung a boot to clear the ball and caught the bottom of Hazard's foot, giving the Belgium star the chance to stroke down the centre of Cech's goal from the penalty spot.

It was an equaliser Chelsea scarcely deserved based on their second-half performance but they could easily have scored another two minutes later, Morata racing in front of Chambers again and blazing over.Hazard was surprisingly taken off for Willian but it proved a masterstroke by Conte. The Brazilian sprayed a fine pass out to fellow substitute Zappacosta, who beat Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the right and crossed for Alonso to fire low past Cech.

It looked as though the Blues would leave with all three points until Bellerin beat N'Golo Kante to a rebound and lashed the ball across goal and into the left-hand corner of the net, sending the home fans into raptures.

Chelsea were inches from silencing them after the restart, with Morata once more failing to beat Cech in a one-on-one before Zappacosta smashed a shot against the bar, but the spoils had to be shared at the end of a thrilling clash in north London.

Juventus 2 Torino 0: Costa and Mandzukic earn Coppa Italia derby win

    47BC89F700000578-5233631-image-m-14_1515026810732.jpg

Douglas Costa and Mario Mandzukic were on target as Juventus moved into the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 derby win at home to Torino on Wednesday.

Juventus are seeking to win the tournament for the fourth year in a row but they were made to battle against their local rivals to set up a last four meeting with Atalanta, who shocked Serie A leaders Napoli a day earlier.

Costa gave Juventus a deserved early lead with a powerful volleyed finish but Torino almost equalised within two minutes, M'Baye Niang's shot after a rapid break hitting the post.Mandzukic spurned two presentable chances to extend Juve's lead early in the second half, before the Croatia striker settled the tie after 66 minutes with a cute chipped finish, the goal awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) referral.

Despite the hosts progressing, it was another frustrating game for Paulo Dybala, who could not extend his run of scoring in all six of his home appearances in the Coppa Italia.

Torino had scored 11 goals in this season's competition to be the tournament's most prolific side, but they could not find a way through a Juve defence that has conceded one goal in 10 games in all competitions.Miralem Pjanic fired an early effort at Vanja Milinkovic-Savic as Juventus started well in a frenetic derby atmosphere in Turin.

The Bianconeri took the lead in the 15th minute, Costa lashing in on the volley after an attempted defensive clearance took a big deflection off Dybala.

Dybala should have doubled Juve's advantage moments later, but the Argentine hit a left-footed drive well over. In an end-to-end encounter Niang was then inches away from equalising, bursting into the box after a strong run in the left channel and seeing his rifled effort clip the outside of the far post.

Milinkovic-Savic denied Dybala from close range after Costa's terrific burst down the left wing set up the striker as Juve threatened to kill the tie, while the offside flag soon correctly denied the Brazilian a second.

Mandzukic - making a rare start up front with Gonzalo Higuain rested - missed two chances shortly after the restart, heading Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross over and then somehow missing Costa's low centre when unmarked six yards from goal.

Blaise Matuidi went close after 58 minutes but the France international could only stab Dybala's cross wide following excellent build-up play from Mandzukic, who then got his goal.Another fortunate deflection fell kindly to Mandzukic and goalkeeper Milinkovic-Savic was left sprawling by a delightful lofted finish from the Croatian.

Torino felt the strike should have been disallowed for a tackle by Sami Khedira in the build-up, but following a VAR referral the goal was given and the visitors' coach, Sinisa Mihajlovic, was dismissed for his angry protests.

Juve's second goal ended any hopes of a Toro fightback, with Milinkovic-Savic saving from substitute Higuain with six minutes to play to keep the scoreline respectable.

Lleida Esportiu 0 Atletico Madrid 4: Diego Costa nets on return in easy Copa del Rey win

    47BC2EDC00000578-5232623-image-a-1_1515009154586.jpg

Atletico Madrid put one foot in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey thanks to a 4-0 first-leg win at Lleida Esportiu, with Diego Costa scoring as a substitute on his return before giving them an injury scare.

Vitolo and Costa only became eligible to play at the start of January following their moves in July and September respectively due to Atletico's transfer ban, and although the game was already won by the time they both entered the fray from the bench, the former Chelsea star made a lasting impression with the third goal.It was by no means a vintage Atletico display for much of the first half, as they afforded their modest opposition several chances and looked flat going forward.

But Diego Godin headed them into the lead just after the half-hour mark - arguably against the run of play - and Fernando Torres was also on target four minutes later with an easy finish at the end of a fine passing move. With Atletico's intensity dropping again after the break, Simeone threw on Costa and Vitolo for their first appearances since their respective moves from Chelsea and Sevilla.

And Costa made an almost instant impact, producing a smart finish - and taking a knock in the process - from close range five minutes later.A deflected Antoine Griezmann free-kick in stoppage time added further gloss to the scoreline, Marc Trilles sent off for a second yellow card for conceding the set-piece.

For all the star quality in the Atletico side, they simply could not match Lleida's desire during the early exchanges, with the home side looking much more purposeful in attack.

They crafted two decent chances in the first seven minutes, as Ivan Agudo first shot just wide of the right-hand post after cutting in from the right flank, before Manu Molina drilled a fierce 25-yard volley over.Godin should have put Atletico ahead in the 20th minute, but he steered off target after meeting a free-kick delivery from deep.

And Lleida nearly capitalised shortly after - Miguel Angel Moya rushing out to deny Agudo from point-blank range after Molina's perfectly weighted through pass. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 33rd minute, as Godin rose highest to glance Yannick Carrasco's free-kick into the bottom-right corner.

Atletico's second shortly after was rather more impressive, however, as they won possession to the right of their own penalty area, patiently worked their way up the other end and Torres tapped in Kevin Gameiro's low cross.Lleida began the second period much like the first and nearly pulled one back soon after the restart, but Agudo's header was kept out by Moya.

Simeone soon introduced debutants Vitolo and Costa, as well as Griezmann, with Atletico taking their foot off the pedal somewhat. And Costa made a telling contribution 21 minutes from time, tucking in Juanfran's low cross and feeling the full force of a defender accidentally standing on his knee in the process.

But the Spain international managed to see out the rest of the game despite a nasty wound, as Atletico cruised and added a late fourth with a deflected Griezmann free-kick after Trilles tripped Gameiro just outside the area.

Bayern confirm interest in Schalke star Goretzka

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed the club are keen to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka. The Germany international is out of contract at the end of the season and has attracted significant interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs in recent weeks.

"But he is a Schalke player and we obviously respect that. But he is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him."Salihamidzic's revelations come a day after Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes praised the 22-year-old, but suggested Barcelona are still interested.

Man Utd & Liverpool target Max keen on Premier League move

Philipp Max is keen on a move to the Premier League but expects to see out the rest of this season at Augsburg.

The left-back - a member of Germany's silver medal-winning team at the 2016 Olympics - has reportedly attracted the attention of a host of Premier League clubs, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool among those linked as potential suitors.

Max's attacking abilities in particular have made waves this season, with the 24-year-old supplying a remarkable 10 assists in 17 Bundesliga outings.

He is under contract at Augsburg until 2022 and told Sport Bild a January move is unlikely as things stand."I've dreamed of playing abroad since I was a kid and I think the English league would be a good match for my straightforward style on the pitch," Max said.

"Other clubs can be sexy too, but this is a topic for the future."I have a contract with Augsburg. In football, you can never rule anything out but I firmly believe that in the second half [of the season] I will play for FCA."Augsburg lie ninth in the Bundesliga at the halfway point of the season and host struggling Hamburg in their first game back after the winter break next weekend.

Barca boss Valverde coy over 'great player' Coutinho's future

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde says he is in the dark over whether Philippe Coutinho could join from Liverpool in the transfer window.Goal understands the Reds have softened their stance regarding whether they are willing to sell the Brazil international in January, with Coutinho himself keen to finally see a deal agreed.

Barca have not yet made an offer but there is speculation that a bid worth an initial €110 million is being readied and that the deal could go through this month.

Valverde thinks Coutinho is "a great player" but insists he does not want to talk openly about anyone outside his own squad."Sometimes I come in here and I learn about things that are happening; whether they're true or not, I don't know," he told a news conference ahead of Barca's Copa del Rey clash with Celta Vigo."Coutinho plays for another team and he is a great player for that team. If he plays for Barca in the future or not, I don't know.

"I like the players I have in my team and if another one comes in the future, I'm sure he has to be a very good player, too."Asked about Coutinho being ineligible to play in the Champions League this season if he joins Barca this month, Valverde replied: "I've got nothing to say about Coutinho. We respect the fact he plays for another club."

There have also been rumours that Manchester City could look to sign Samuel Umtiti in the coming weeks, with the France international's release clause at Barca set at a relatively modest €60m.Valverde, however, expects the centre-back to have no desire to leave Camp Nou halfway through only his second season in Spain.

"I'm not worried about what clubs might or might not do. Umtiti is a great player and we expect him to stay at Barca for many more years and for him to enjoy his football with us," he said.

"To an extent, the buyout clause is made high so that you can't buy the player but, as time goes by, that fee doesn't seem so high at all."But the player still has to want to leave. We're very happy with Umtiti and I'm sure he's going to stay here for a very long time."

The Catalan giants were given a boost in the build-up to Thursday's clash with Celta, with the news that Ousmane Dembele has been cleared to return after being sidelined with a hamstring injury since September.

Valverde now expects January to be an important time for the 20-year-old as he looks to kick-start his Barca career again following last August's €105m move from Borussia Dortmund."He's an important member of our team. He got injured just as he was getting adapted so he really has to do that all over again," he said.

"He's been doing that in training and now we have to see him do it in competitive matches. January will be a very important part of his adaptation process."

Arsenal sign young Greek defender Mavropanos

Arsenal have completed the signing of centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina for a fee in the region of £1.8 million.

The 20-year-old broke into the Super League side's first-team towards the end of the season before cementing his place in the starting XI this term, but has already attracted interest from Greek giants Olympiakos and the Premier League side.

Speaking after Wednesday's clash against Chelsea, however, Arsene Wenger confirmed Mavropanos was north London-bound, although fans may have to wait to see him in the first team.

"Yes [the signing is complete], but he's not ready to play," Wenger said of Mavropanos' impending arrival following Wednesday's 2-2 Premier League draw with Chelsea."He will go out on loan."Goal understands the Gunners won the race for him in the January transfer window due their new chief scout Sven Mislintat having close links with the player's agent from his time at Borussia Dortmund.

Mislintat, who identified and scouted the player, is expected to focus heavily on bringing the best young players to Arsenal, and Mavropanos' arrival could be the start of several sought after European talents signing for Arsene Wenger's side this season.

Mavropanos thus joins compatriots Panagiotis Retsos, Kostas Manolas and Sokratis Papastathopoulos in sealing a move to one of Europe's most prestigious clubs. Arsenal see the transfer as a prime investment for the future, in the hope that he will develop into a top Premier League defender in the coming years.

Tottenham 1 West Ham 1: Obiang and Son go spectacular in derby draw

    47C43DCB00000578-0-image-a-47_1515101622501.jpg

Pedro Obiang and Son Heung-min traded incredible goals as the London derby between Tottenham and West Ham at Wembley finished 1-1.

It is the fourth time Spurs have been held at their temporary home in the Premier League this season and Mauricio Pochettino's side lie fifth, three points shy of Liverpool a place above them.

Spurs almost lost in show-stopping fashion when defensive midfielder Obiang was allowed room 30 yards from goal to unleash a thunderous 70th-minute shot into the top corner beyond a helpless Hugo Lloris.

It was West Ham's first shot of any description in the game and, given Spurs had managed 20 by the time they fell behind, a share of the spoils was the least they deserved.Son made his own strong case for the best goal of the night with a spectacular hit from similar range, but Pochettino's men were unable to make it four wins out of four over the festive period.

West Ham edge two points clear of the relegation zone and, while it might not always be as pretty as Obiang's moment of inspiration, David Moyes has hit upon a fruitful formula when faced with the capital's heavyweights.A 1-0 win over Chelsea and a gruelling 0-0 draw with Arsenal means United have taken five points from London derbies within the past month.

West Ham goalkeeper Adrian fumbled from an early corner and Declan Rice – in for the injured Aaron Cresswell - was on hand to block Davinson Sanchez's shot.

Harry Kane was back in the Spurs starting XI following illness and took aim from the edge of the area before the half hour, curling a strike towards the bottom right corner, although Adrian proved equal to the task.

Son found room among the massed ranks of West Ham defenders to test the visiting goalkeeper once more, while Kane was unable to convert at the back post when Serge Aurier guided a volley from Eric Dier's raking pass just beyond the Premier League's top scorer.

Adrian concluded the half by tipping a deflected Christian Eriksen strike over at the end of a move where the Denmark playmaker and Dele Alli enjoyed rare room to drive towards the away defence.Spurs continued to be frustrated early during the opening stages of the second half, with precious few signs of West Ham's resistance wavering.

Alli looked the most likely source of a breakthrough and the England midfielder rose to head Ben Davies' cross wide at the far post after Eriksen had another attempt blocked.

Pablo Zabaleta slid in to brilliantly deny Kane, although Adrian's challenge on Alli after the loose ball looped up gave Spurs further cause to seek Mike Dean's whistle.

The vaguely unusual sight of West Ham being inside the Tottenham half with 20 minutes to play thundered the game into life as Obiang languidly surveyed his option and stunningly hit the jackpot.

Adrian got away with spilling a Kane shot as Spurs streamed forward looking for a response, while Cheikhou Kouyate might have doubled West Ham's lead when Obiang turned provider with a searching cross. Son then matched the would-be match-winner with a venomous long-ranger of his own that swerved away from Adrian and crashed into the net.

The contest belatedly shed its shackles during the last five minutes, with Lloris thwarting substitute Andre Ayew to deny West Ham a victory to follow up their October EFL Cup triumph at Wembley.

Numancia 0 Real Madrid 3: Spot-kick double gives Zidane's men winning start to 2018

    47C25CEE00000578-0-image-a-7_1515099461898.jpg

Gareth Bale scored a penalty on his first start since September and Isco tucked away another spot-kick as Real Madrid opened 2018 with a 3-0 win at 10-man Numancia in the first leg of their last-16 Copa del Rey tie on Thursday.

Lucas Vazquez won both penalties for drawing fouls by Carlos Gutierrez and Unai Medina, although Numancia could feel both spot-kicks were soft awards, with Borja Mayoral wrapping up the victory with a stoppage-time header.

Bale was one of the few first-team regulars on show at Los Pajaritos, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos among those rested as Madrid returned from Spanish football's winter break, having lost their last match of 2017 3-0 at home to Barcelona.

Zinedine Zidane was marking the second anniversary of his appointment as Madrid head coach, but the Frenchman had a nervy night until late on as second-tier side Numancia pushed Los Blancos hard.

Bale opened the scoring from the penalty spot, the forward confidently rolling the spot-kick home, and Numancia's hopes of producing a fightback were seemingly ended after Pape Maly Diamanka was sent off with half an hour to play, having caught Nacho on the ankle with a late challenge.

Jagoba Arrasate's side almost snatched an equaliser in spectacular fashion with 15 minutes to play, Inigo Perez spotting Kiko Casilla off his line, but seeing his 45-yard chip bounce back off the crossbar, only for Isco to convert another arguable penalty and Mayoral to head home a late third.

Bale was making his first start since September after calf and thigh injuries and the Wales international hit an early free-kick into the wall. Numancia were on a five-match unbeaten run and Higinio Marin went close to giving the hosts a shock lead, drilling just wide of the far post in the 13th minute.

Mayoral scored twice against Fuenlabrada in the last round and the striker should have hit the net again, somehow turning Marco Asensio's deep free-kick wide from point-blank range.Madrid survived a penalty appeal when Theo Hernandez appeared to tug the arm of Dani Nieto in the box, then referee Javier Estrada Fernandez gave the LaLiga champions a debatable spot-kick at the other end after 35 minutes.

Vazquez nutmegged Gutierrez but went down theatrically under minimal contact, Bale tucking the penalty away by sending Munir Mohamedi the wrong way with a stuttered run-up.

Nacho miskicked with the goal at his mercy within two minutes of the restart as Madrid tried to put the tie beyond Numancia.Mohamedi blocked Dani Carvajal's effort with his right boot before Numancia were reduced to 10 men, Diamanka shown a second yellow card for a nasty foul on Nacho.Higinio headed Nieto's cross wide after 66 minutes as the hosts continued to threaten despite Madrid's man advantage.

And they went even closer when Casilla was caught out of position, only for Perez's sensational effort from just inside the Madrid half to hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce down a yard in front of the line.Substitute Isco ought to have wrapped up Madrid's victory with six minutes to play, but, having worked the chance on to his left foot, he cleared the crossbar from eight yards.

But after Vazquez drew a foul from Medina in the box, Isco smashed home from 12 yards to put Madrid in a dominant position ahead of Wednesday's second leg.
And with Numancia tiring, Mayoral added to his Copa del Rey goal haul by nodding in a right-wing cross from Achraf Hakimi to complete the scoring.

Celta Vigo 1 Barcelona 1: Dembele returns as Copa del Rey holders draw in 2018 bow

    47C1F77200000578-0-image-a-45_1515090531949.jpg

Ousmane Dembele returned but Barcelona's Balaidos woes continued as the LaLiga leaders were held 1-1 at Celta Vigo in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie on Thursday.Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were among the big names rested by Ernesto Valverde, who named Dembele, fit again after sustaining a hamstring injury in September, among his substitutes.

The Catalan giants lost on their last two visits to Celta and the hosts, coached by former Barca goalkeeper Juan Carlos Unzue - who was Luis Enrique's Camp Nou assistant - ensured the visitors' difficulties in Galicia did not let up.

Barca's lack of cohesion was clear throughout, although they took an early lead thanks to Jose Arnaiz, who tucked away an Andre Gomes cross to open the club's account for 2018.But Celta equalised before half-time, Pione Sisto taking advantage of slack defending to slam home a powerful drive from the rebound after Iago Aspas hit the crossbar and the ball ricocheted off goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Arnaiz spurned chances to put Barca back in front and Valverde turned to Dembele with 20 minutes remaining, but the club-record signing could not inspire his side to victory, although Sergi Roberto turned Nelson Semedo's cross on to the outside of the post in injury time.

Aspas had the first chance inside seven minutes, finding himself through on goal, but Semedo's pace allowed the right-back to make a fine recovery block.Arnaiz had scored in two consecutive Copa del Rey appearances and he took his chance again in the absence of Luis Suarez and Messi, putting Barca in front in the 15th minute.

The visitors won the ball on the edge of their own area and broke rapidly down the left channel through Denis Suarez, before Gomes pulled the ball back for Arnaiz to drill home a first-time finish.Celta drew level in the 31st minute, however, Sisto reacting quickest to lash in from a tight angle after a close-range Aspas strike crashed against the bar and Cillessen.

The hosts went close five minutes prior to the break, Daniel Wass driving narrowly wide, before Paulinho thumped a low shot off-target at the other end.Arnaiz should have scored his second in the 56th minute, sending a diving header from Lucas Digne's cross wide.

Denis Suarez then missed an even better chance at the back post, Semedo's centre begging to be finished but somehow put wide by the midfielder.Barca were cranking up the pressure and a placed Sergio Busquets shot clipped the bar with Sergio Alvarez well beaten, before Dembele came on for his first appearance in over three months.

Emre Mor drilled inches wide in the 72nd minute, while Alvarez had to save a poked Dembele effort and an ambitious strike from substitute Ivan Rakitic.Dembele looked sharp on his return, but despite heavy pressure from Barca - Roberto hitting the post in stoppage time - they could not force a winner, leaving the tie in the balance ahead of next Thursday's return leg at Camp Nou, where Celta drew 2-2 last month.

OFFICIAL: Pjaca joins Schalke on loan from Juventus

Schalke have completed the signing of winger Marko Pjaca from Juventus on loan until the end of the season.

The Bundesliga side will pay €1 million to the Serie A champions, plus a further €500,000 in bonuses, to bring the Croatia international to Germany. It was reported Schalke were keen to include the option of a permanent transfer in the deal but Juve refused, as they consider his long-term future to be in Turin.

Speaking to Schalke's official website, Pjaca revealed he sought advice from Benedikt Howedes, who spent his entire professional career in Gelsenkirchen before joining Juventus earlier this year."He had so many positive things to say about the club and the fans here," Pjaca said."The coach [Domenico Tedesco] has told me a lot about his playing style and I like that. Now I'm just hoping for as many games as possible."

"We are glad that Marko has decided to join us," said Tedesco of a player who was also linked to Anderlecht. "Many clubs were interested in him. He brings another quality to our team."Marko can be used in a variety of ways. He can play right and left as well as at number eight or in front. He is robust and brings good speed."

Pjaca sustained cruciate knee ligament damage on international duty and only returned in a match for the Primavera side in November. He has not played for Juve's senior side this season."Pjaca will be loaned out, he needs to play," Allegri said earlier this week.

"He is a boy who has extraordinary qualities and unfortunately this injury has temporarily stopped his progression."So he needs to find a team where he can find continuity to return next year in the best condition."Pjaca joined Juve from Dinamo Zagreb for €23m in July 2016, the Bianconeri winning the domestic double and reaching the Champions League final in his first season in Italy.
