Mahrez hands in transfer request after £60m Man City bid

Manchester City have launched an audacious £60 million move to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City before Wednesday's transfer deadline, Goal understands.City's approach has turned Mahrez's head and it is believed he has handed in a transfer request in a bid to force Leicester into a shock deal.

The Blues' interest in Mahrez was first reported by a British national newspaper earlier on Tuesday and Goal can confirm that the club are working hard to bring the Algerian to the Etihad Stadium.City insiders believe that any possible move will be difficult to conclude, but feel that their chances would be boosted significantly if Mahrez formally requests that Leicester sell him.

Mahrez has been determined to join a top European club for some time and it is understood that he will ask his employers to let him leave the King Power Stadium in January.Sources close to the player have told Goal that a £60m bid was lodged on Tuesday.

Goal reported during the weekend that City officials have been working on a third potential signing, possibly a forward, at the same time as negotiating deals for Aymeric Laporte and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

Those City officials were keeping the third option's identity close to their chests and, as of the end of last week, they were unsure whether there would be enough time to conclude the deal.

But following Leroy Sane's injury at Cardiff on Sunday, one which will keep him out for six or seven weeks, the Premier League leaders have stepped up their pursuit.

Pep Guardiola insisted during his Tuesday press conference that there was a "95% or 99% chance" that City would do no further business this window, but sources have indicated that he is hopeful of overcoming the odds and bringing in Mahrez - but only if the forward pushes for it.Since City's interest in the 26-year-old was revealed by The Sun, Goal has learned that he had been one of a number of targets that City had been monitoring with a view to a summer move, if they could not sign him this month.

Goal also understands that City are keeping their eye on Eden Hazard's situation at Chelsea, although they realise that they would have to fight with Real Madrid to seal his signature, and that is if the Londoners would even sell their star man to a direct rival. It is believed that there are at least two other names on City's wishlist for the position.

But the league leaders still hope to do business this month after ramping up their transfer plans around 10 days ago, having missed out on Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United.

The Blues are determined to be more decisive in the market, and have also decided that they do not want to be too active during the summer window, which ends before the 2018-19 season kicks off, and which will be disrupted by the World Cup.

Laporte was officially confirmed as a City player on Tuesday after the Blues paid the release clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract. It is also believed that City will try until the deadline to sign Fred from Shakhtar.City had initially been willing to strike a deal this month but wait until the summer the bring in the 24-year-old, but since changing their transfer strategy they have been pushing to recruit him before Wednesday's deadline.Shakhtar are determined not to let him go now, however, and City will have to break that resolve if they are to get their way.

Manchester City have completed the signing of French centre-half Aymeric Laporte in a €65 million deal with Athletic Bilbao.

The highly-rated 23-year-old, who Goal revealed was on his way to the Etihad Stadium after seeing his release clause triggered , has committed to a contract with the Premier League leaders through to 2023.He is to inherit the number 14 jersey within Pep Guardiola’s squad and is looking forward to getting started and helping his new club finish the job of securing major silverware this season.

Laporte told the club’s official website upon the announcement of his arrival: “I am very happy to be here.“City are a club with a lot of ambition and they are one of the best teams in Europe.“I am looking forward to working under Pep Guardiola and trying to help the club to achieve success.

“It means a lot that the club have shown faith in me and I am excited to get started.”Laporte made his breakthrough at Bilbao in 2012 and has departed the club having made 222 appearances.

During his time in Spain, he was named in the La Liga Team of the Year for 2013-14 and tasted Super Cup success in 2016.He is yet to earn senior international recognition, with either France or Spain, but is being backed to kick-on in his career with City and grace the very top of the game.

The Blues’ director of football, Txiki Begiristain, added on the new arrival at the Etihad Stadium: “We are delighted to have signed Aymeric.“We have assessed defensive options and he is a player we have admired for a long time.

“With his quality and ability to play out from the back, we feel Aymeric will fit in perfectly with Pep Guardiola’s playing style.”

Four areas Liverpool need to invest Coutinho cash highlighted by McManaman

Jurgen Klopp may not be looking to reinvest funds from Philippe Coutinho’s sale during the January window, but Steve McManaman says Liverpool need four signings in the summer.

The Reds boss remains adamant that he is not actively seeking a replacement for a playmaking talent offloaded to Barcelona for €160 million. For now, the German tactician would rather work with those already at his disposal and endeavour to maximise what they offer to the collective cause.

Klopp has, however, admitted to having targets “all over the world”, and McManaman feels at least four of those will need to be pursued as Liverpool strengthen at the back and in attack.

The former Reds star told the Daily Star: “I am [pleased about Liverpool’s business]. Coutinho was always going to leave, I'd have preferred him to leave in the summer."It would have been nice to see him carry on playing in the Champions League for Liverpool considering he's cup tied for Barca. I don't understand that.

"Bringing [Virgil] van Dijk in was necessary, he needed a centre-half. He seems to be looking at other positions."When you look at the squad there's plenty of full, experienced, international players there, even on the bench."But what can you do? You buy four or five full internationals for a lot of money and in the end somebody else pops up from the substitutes bench.

"I think they've got a fine balance. They're not as strong as Manchester City but nobody is at the moment."It's just about staying fit and playing well until the end of the season.

"You always want a few more players, I'd love them to buy a 30-goal a season forward to complement the players we've got. I'd like them to buy another central defender and a couple of wingers but in football you can't have every position filled by everybody that you want."Liverpool are already well-stocked in the final third of the field, but replacing Coutinho is a must while Daniel Sturridge has been allowed to link up with West Brom on loan and his days at Anfield may be numbered.

Further reinforcements at the back are also likely to be sought, with the Reds expected to be in the summer market for a new goalkeeper and additions to a porous defensive line.

Fellaini part of Mourinho's plans as Man Utd push for new contract

Manchester United remain hopeful that Marouane Fellaini will sign a new contract, with Jose Mourinho eager to keep the versatile Belgian. The 30-year-old midfielder has entered the final six months of his current deal, meaning that he is free to speak with any interested parties outside of England.

Galatasaray, Besiktas and Paris Saint-Germain have been mentioned as possible suitors of a man who followed David Moyes to Old Trafford in a £27.5 million transfer back in the summer of 2013.

Fellaini has not always been a fan favourite during his time with the Red Devils, but Mourinho considers him to be an important member of his squad and is still looking for fresh terms to be thrashed out before an experienced performer slips the net and lands in the free agent pool.

“It’s a very important player for me and is a great professional that is giving everything he can to help the team and there is a desire from myself, the board and the player to stay together,” said the Portuguese tactician.“That’s our objective. Are we going to reach, to agree?

"I don’t know but what I know is that myself, the board and the player we would like to have a happy year."Pressed further on whether he is feeling more optimistic about Fellaini committing his future to United, Mourinho added: “In relation to Marouane? No, no. I’m happy with his contribution.

"I think he’s been a great professional for us and I know that he wants to stay with us and that is very important.“He knows I want him and the club wants him and I think that’s very important for him.

"But then there is a paper to sign but you only sign the paper when you are happy with what’s on the paper. So let’s see what will happen.”Fellaini recently missed nine Premier League fixtures with a knee injury, but is back to full fitness now and has returned to Mourinho’s plans.

He figured in victories over Stoke and Burnley, as well as an FA Cup win over Derby, and has made 15 appearances across all competitions this season.

Chelsea confirm £17.5m Emerson Palmieri signing from Roma

    48BE834200000578-5331705-image-a-30_1517350701696.jpg

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri on a four-and-a-half-year deal. The Brazilian, 23, was installed as a top transfer priority at Stamford Bridge in January after interest in Juventus' Alex Sandro cooled.

And Emerson has finally been announced as the Blues' second signing of the window after Ross Barkley, in a deal Roma claim is worth £17.5 million as well as a possible £7.8m in add-ons.

"Emerson Palmieri has today become the latest addition to the Chelsea squad after completing a transfer from Italian side Roma," the club announced on its official website."The 23-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and will wear the No.33 shirt.

"Emerson, full name Emerson Palmieri dos Santos, arrives following a fruitful and productive two-and-a-half seasons with Roma, where he established himself as an important member of the side and gained invaluable experience of playing in Europe. "A versatile left-sided player who can operate as a full-back, wing-back or in a more advanced role, Emerson is skillful, possesses a good range of passing and reads the game well for a player so young.

Also speaking to the club's official website, Emerson expressed his delight in getting the chance to play in the Premier League. "I came here because it’s a great team with a great history. Today I am realising one of my dreams to pull on the shirt of such a great club," the full-back said.

"English football is something I have been watching since I was 15 years old. It is a really beautiful game over here but it is going to be even more beautiful to play it."
Emerson is one of two Roma players to be pursued by Chelsea this winter. Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko was also a target, but Chelsea appear to have given up the chase as attentions have shifted to Arsenal's Olivier Giroud.

Manchester United trigger Mata's extension clause

Manchester United have triggered a clause in Juan Mata's contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford by an extra year until June 2019.Mata's deal was due to expire at end of the season, but the Red Devils have opted to activate their option to prolong his stay by a further 12 months.

And United boss Jose Mourinho, who sold Mata to United from Chelsea in January 2014, talked up the attacking midfielder's importance to his plans.

"Mata is very important. When I arrived one-and-a-half years ago, [they said], 'Mata is in trouble, in trouble, in trouble', and now he's getting an extension of one more year," Mourinho told a news conference ahead of Wednesday's trip to Wembley to face Tottenham.

"An important player for me; important player for the club; important player for the other players."The arrival of Alexis Sanchez at Old Trafford from Arsenal has led to rumours that Mata could return to former club Valencia, or join Inter.

But Mata spoke of his desire to remain a United player. "I still feel very happy and very proud to be part of this club," he told MUTV. "I think everyone that belongs to Manchester United should feel privileged, and that's how I feel.

"I'm happy with everyone at the club and, obviously, with the manager and my team-mates. Once you are part of this club, your football career is not the same; it changes, because this is one of the biggest clubs in football history.

"Every day I try to tell myself how lucky and how privileged I am, try to take advantage of every single training session, and try to see how important it is to be a Manchester United player."At eight, 10, 12 years old, I never imagined that I would play for such a club. I remember the big players – [Paul] Scholes, [Ryan] Giggs, [David] Beckham, [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy, [Rio] Ferdinand, [Nemanja] Vidic – and it felt so far from where I was playing, but now I'm here it's a special feeling."

Since arriving from Stamford Bridge, Mata has scored 39 goals in 172 appearances for United, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during his time in Manchester.

Everton forward Sandro joins Sevilla on loan

Everton forward Sandro Ramirez is to join Sevilla on loan for the rest of the season subject to a medical, the Toffees have confirmed.

Sandro scored 16 goals in 32 appearances for Malaga last season, prompting Everton to snap up the Spaniard as part of a heavy close-season recruitment drive. However, the 22-year-old has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and has failed to force his way into the first-team picture at Goodison Park particularly since Sam Allardyce's appointment.

Sandro has just one goal in 15 Everton appearances across all competitions, and will now look to resurrect his campaign back in La Liga with a Sevilla side that sit sixth in the table.

The news, which was announced on Everton's website, continues a busy January for Sevilla, with Vincenzo Montella's side having signed Roque Mesa, Guilherme Arana and Miguel Layun with Wednesday's transfer deadline day looming.Sevilla will take on Manchester United in the Champions League round of 16 next month.

'Monster that kills little kids' Mourinho hails youngster Rashford as future star

Jose Mourinho mocked himself "the monster that kills kids" as he insisted Marcus Rashford remains a crucial member of Manchester United's side after Alexis Sanchez's arrival.Mourinho's attacking riches now include star forward Sanchez after the Chile international swapped Arsenal for Premier League rivals United last week.

The signing of Sanchez has raised doubts over Rashford's game time at Old Trafford , with Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard also vying for starting spots.

Rashford has featured in all 36 of United's matches this season, the 20-year-old named in the starting XI on 20 occasions. But Mourinho – who has a reputation for not giving youth a chance – reassured Rashford over his role in Manchester.

"Marcus' story is quite interesting because he started playing with Mr [Louis] Van Gaal, when the team was really in trouble, to have options," said Mourinho. "Then the monster that kills the little kids arrived, but he plays every game since then. He plays every game, starting or coming from the bench, as a striker, as a left winger, as a right winger. Then he goes to the national team.

"The kid is having a hell of an experience at every level, so an amazing future waits for him and being surrounded by these players can only help him. But the whole story of Marcus — will he get minutes and matches? — that story is really old, because he's a very important player for us."

Mourinho added: "In attack, it's difficult for us to improve. Where are we going to get a better combination of players than we have? We cannot buy Lionel Messi, we cannot buy Cristiano Ronaldo – these are the best players of the last decade."Where can we get better players than Mata, Martial, Lingard, Rashford, Alexis, Lukaku? In attack, we have an amazing group of players."

Mourinho's Man United – second and eight points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham – travel to London to face Spurs at Wembley Wednesday.

Aubameyang completes club-record £55m move to Arsenal

    48C265CB00000578-5334063-Aubameyang_clutches_the_club_badge_on_his_chest_in_a_display_tha-a-7_1517400413841.jpg

Arsenal have completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for £55 million plus £5m in further add-ons.Aubameyang, 28, has been subject of negotiations between the Gunners and Dortmund for several weeks, with Arsenal having refused to meet the Bundesliga side's €70m asking price.

The striker, who scored 31 league goals last season, was left out of two consecutive games for Dortmund after missing a team meeting, with head coach Peter Stoger accusing the frontman of not being focused.

However, Aubameyang started in Dortmund's draw with Freiburg on Saturday amid claims from the Bundesliga side that a transfer would be sanctioned if Arsenal reached "certain parameters".Arsenal eventually reached an agreement to make Aubameyang a club-record signing after Dortmund wrapped up the loan of Michy Batshuayi on the final day of the January transfer window to replace him .

Dortmund had been keen on bringing Olivier Giroud to the Westfalenstadion as a short-term replacement for Aubameyang but the France international opted to stay in England for family reasons. Following Batshuayi and Aubameyang's moves, Giroud could make the switch to Chelsea before the window closes.

Aubameyang joins up with former Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Emirates Stadium after the Armenian joined in a swap deal which saw Alexis Sanchez head to Manchester United. The duo combined for 62 goals in all competitions two seasons ago.

This season, Aubameyang has scored 21 goals in 24 matches in all competitions. He has found the net 141 times since joining BVB from Saint-Etienne for €13m in July 2013, and he also has 23 goals in 56 caps for Gabon.

"Apart from the unpleasant events of recent weeks, we like to remember that the story of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at BVB for more than four years was a single success story," sporting director Michael Zorc told Dortmund's website.
"He has done great things for Borussia Dortmund in this time, scored many important goals and is part of the team that brought the DFB-Pokal to Dortmund in 2017. We wish Pierre-Emerick all the best for his future at Arsenal."He joins an Arsenal side that sit sixth in the Premier League table, five points off the pace in the race for the top four.

Arsene Wenger's side were eliminated in their FA Cup third round meeting with Nottingham Forest earlier this month but have advanced to the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and will face Swedish side Ostersunds in the Europa League last 32.

Chelsea sign Giroud from Arsenal for £18m

    48C4ADDA00000578-5334099-image-a-11_1517417391589.jpg

Chelsea have completed the signing of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal for an estimated £18 million. The France international will join the Blues on an 18-month contract with an option to extend it for another year after the two clubs agreed a deal on Wednesday.

The move has now been made official after Arsenal confirmed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund, who have just loaned Michy Batshuayi from Chelsea.

A triangle of transfers developed between the three clubs over the last few days of the January transfer window, with each move seemingly hindering on one of the others going through.

While Dortmund wanted Batshuayi as Aubameyang's replacement, Chelsea were reluctant to let him go without bringing in another alternative to Alvaro Morata and turned to Giroud after failing to land Edin Dzeko from Roma.Arsenal, however, were awaiting their club record signing from the German side before relinquishing the France international.

Giroud told Chelsea's official website: ‘Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in the Premier League. They have won maybe the most trophies in the last six or seven years. It’s a massive club and I am proud to sign for Chelsea, and I’m looking forward to playing.’The 31-year-old had grown frustrated at the Gunners after being dropped to the bench following Alexandre Lacazette's arrival from Lyon.

Giroud started just one of his 16 Premier League games this season, scoring four goals, and had been linked to West Ham, Everton and Borussia Dortmund in recent months but opted to stay at the Emirates Stadium.Although first-team opportunities were rare, Arsene Wenger urged him to stay at the club for the remainder of the season.

But the forward admitted in December that a move in January was likely, with a spot in the France squad at the 2018 World Cup in his sights. “I have the World Cup at the back of my mind weekly, almost daily,” Giroud said last month.

“Each time I go onto the pitch, it's to be more clinical and keep on track for the World Cup.“If I wasn't able to leave this summer, it was because of the opportunities I had... but it's certain that eventually, even in January, I'm going to have to ask myself the question again."

Wenger has spoken of his respect for Giroud, telling the club's website: “Oli is a guy who gave great service to the club, he never let us down on the commitment front and he saved us many times,” said Arsene Wenger.“We signed him from Montpellier and he became a strong, regular international player for France, and we have gone together through good and bad. But always I believe that his behaviour has been top, top class.

“He always had his heart 100 per cent in the team and he was committed.”Giroud departs north London with Arsenal sitting sixth in the Premier League, while Chelsea sit third, three points behind Manchester United.

Giroud arrived at Arsenal in 2012 as a Ligue 1 champion with Montpellier and went on to make over 250 appearances for the north London side, scoring 105 goals and winning three FA Cups with Arsene Wenger's side.
