Mourinho's long-time ally Faria to leave Manchester United

Manchester United assistant manager Rui Faria will leave the club at the end of this season following 17 years as Jose Mourinho's right-hand man.

Faria served as a prominent member of Mourinho's backroom staff during his spells with Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and over the past two seasons at Old Trafford.

The 42-year-old Portuguese coach was recently linked to the vacancy created by Arsene Wenger's imminent departure from Arsenal, with Mourinho describing his long-time ally and friend as a "good fit" for the Emirates Stadium job.

However, in a statement on United's official website, Faria stated a desire to spend more time with his family as his primary motivation for departing."After a lot of consideration, and with a very heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to move on," Faria said.

"I have had 17 years of incredible and unforgettable experiences. However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life." Faria went on to thank Mourinho for his guidance and friendship.

He added: "My heartfelt thanks go to the manager, Jose Mourinho, for the belief he had in me, all those years ago, when it all was just a student dream. "I would like to thank him for the opportunity and confidence, for the knowledge and experience, but most importantly for his friendship."

Michael Carrick will join Mourinho's backroom team after a farewell appearance against Watford at Old Trafford on Sunday, although there has been no announcement over who will serve as Faria's direct replacement. "Seventeen years… in Leiria, Porto, London, Milan, Madrid, London again and Manchester. Training, playing, travelling, studying, laughing and also a few tears of happiness," said Mourinho, who was in a similarly reflective mood to his compatriot.

"Seventeen years and the kid is now a man. The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager."I will miss my friend and that is the hardest thing for me, but his happiness is more important and, of course, I respect his decision, especially because I know that we will always be together. Be happy, brother."

United take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley next weekend, having already secured a second-place finish in the Premier League behind champions Manchester City.

Mkhitaryan: I was no Alexis makeweight for Man Utd

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has rubbished any suggestion that he was a makeweight in a high-profile swap deal which saw him and Alexis Sanchez trade places at Arsenal and Manchester United.

With a Chilean forward running down his contract at Emirates Stadium, a January move was always on the cards.Jose Mourinho eventually won the race for his signature, with United fending off arch-rivals Manchester City in pursuit of a much sought-after talent.

The Red Devils sweetened the deal by allowing Mkhitaryan to move in the opposite direction, but the Armenia international insists he held as much weight in that agreement as the man he succeeded in north London.“I didn’t come here to replace anyone,” the 29-year-old playmaker told FourFourTwo.

“Everyone keeps saying that I’ve been part of a deal for Alexis Sanchez but it’s not true because he was running down his contract. “If he didn’t choose to come to Manchester United, he would have stayed at Arsenal until the summer.

“Everything was up to me. I’m not saying I was important in this aspect but I want everyone to understand I wasn’t made part of the deal for Alexis Sanchez.“We’re different players, we’re different characters, we have different abilities and skills.”

Mkhitaryan was happy to head for the exits at Old Trafford after falling out of favour under Mourinho. He has stated on a regular basis since leaving Manchester that he needed to move on in order to find a club that trusted him and shared his footballing philosophies.

Arsenal are considered to be the perfect fit, with Mkhitaryan reiterating his happiness in new surroundings.“When I heard I could swap Manchester United for Arsenal, I said ‘yes I want to do that’.

“I wasn’t evening thinking twice or thinking that maybe I don’t have to go. I said ‘no I want to go. I want to have more playing time. I want to enjoy playing attacking, offensive football’. I made the right decision coming here.”

Neymar hints at PSG stay as Real Madrid rumours rumble on

After modelling their new kit on Friday, Neymar told Paris Saint-Germain fans he wants to "continue giving them joy" as speculation mounts linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

Rumours continue to swirl that the world's most expensive player could depart PSG after just one season in Ligue 1 and opt for a return to La Liga with the European champions.

Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane said at a news conference on Friday he believes Neymar could be "compatible" with Cristiano Ronaldo, while reports in Spain earlier this week suggested the forward had struggled to settle in France and had told some team-mates he would be leaving.Zidane said: "Good players are always compatible."I don't know if we are negotiating for Neymar. What's worrying us is what is going on at the moment.

"I haven't asked Neymar personally because I don't get involved in these things. We have to finish this season, the rest will come after." But on Saturday, the Brazil talisman - who is on the road to recovery after surgery on a broken metatarsal suffered in February - posted on Twitter and dropped a huge hint that he would be staying put in Paris.

"Proud to wear the new jersey and to continue giving you joy," read Neymar's caption, alongside an image of him in PSG colours.

Neymar had netted 28 times in 30 appearances for PSG prior to picking up an unfortunate injury which prevented him from playing any further part in a successful Ligue 1 title bid.

'McTominay not good enough for Man Utd midfield' - Neville predicts positional switch

Scott McTominay lacks the ball-playing ability to be a Manchester United midfielder, says Gary Neville, with the 21-year-old better suited to a centre-back post.

An Old Trafford academy graduate has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2017-18, with Jose Mourinho having drafted him into the senior fold for 21 appearances.McTominay has also earned international recognition, with England snubbed in favour of representing Scotland.

The youngster is, however, still learning his craft and may be forced into a positional switch before fully establishing himself for club and country.Neville believes that will see McTominay shunted backwards, with United requiring greater creativity in an engine room which already includes the likes of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic. The former Red Devils defender told Sky Sports on an area of the field which has proved problematic for Mourinho at times: “Pogba has fallen short in terms of quality [this season], far too inconsistent.

“McTominay, when I watch him, I'm not sure he's actually good enough on the ball to be a Man United midfield player.“I do think he's the type that it's good for him to play games in there - but I do wonder whether if actually he's got more of a position at centre back eventually, the physicality that he has. He's a big lad.

“Is he sharp enough on the ball to be a Man United central midfield player?”McTominay made his debut towards the end of the 2016-17 season, with a first Premier League outing taken in against Arsenal.

The current campaign has seen him make his bow in Champions League competition, while also committing his long-term future to United by penning a new deal through to 2021.

Roma must match Juventus model, says Di Francesco

Eusebio Di Francesco wants Roma to emulate Juventus' commanding home record in order to evolve into Serie A title challengers.

Six of the Giallorossi's seven league losses this season have come at Stadio Olimpico, leaving them at risk of sliding out of the top four with two games remaining. The challenge to preserve a Champions League spot is made more difficult by Sunday's visit from a Juve side expecting to sew up a seventh successive Scudetto.

An imposing Allianz Stadium has been the cornerstone of that dominance, the Bianconeri having lost just three Serie A home matches since Massimiliano Allegri took over in 2014.Di Francesco urged his players to adopt the champions' professional approach to each assignment.

"Over the last few years Roma have always been a step behind. We need to improve in many areas and reinforce the squad where we are lacking," he told reporters. "The biggest step forward will be if we treat every fixture the same way, something that Juventus are experts at.

"We've had a few too many defeats at home in Serie A, but not in the Champions League, and again that's part of the growth process, turning the Stadio Olimpico into a fortress."Juventus build most of their titles on a strong home record."

Roma's impressive run to the Champions League semi-finals this season could lose some of its shine if they fail to secure a top-four finish, which is under threat from fifth-placed Inter.
Di Francesco says the team's development hinges on competing at the highest possible level."The primary objective is to enter the Champions League, both because of the prestige but also growing the mentality," he said."It's not to send a message to anyone else, but to ourselves and to help build our ambitions. I think Roma have grown a great deal over the last year, but there's a long way to go yet."

Stoger announces Borussia Dortmund exit after defeat to Hoffenheim

Peter Stoger has confirmed his time in charge of Borussia Dortmund is over.

The 52-year-old announced he will part ways with the club following the 3-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on the final day of the Bundesliga season. That left Dortmund to cling onto a Champions League spot as they finished ahead of fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.

Stoger only took over from the sacked Peter Bosz in December having himself been relieved of his duties at Cologne a week earlier."This is my last game for BVB, which we decided together some time ago," Stoger said in his post-match media conference."A new stimulus, with a new coach, will do the club well."

BVB midfielder Sebastian Rode revealed earlier this month the squad were expecting to have a new man in charge for next term and Stoger's exit suggests a succession plan has been formulated.Nice's Lucien Favre, who has previously had spells with Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach, is widely expected to step in at Signal Iduna Park.

Should he take over, the veteran Swiss will be tasked with turning the club back into title contenders.Sunday's loss to Hoffenheim saw them finish 29 points shy of champions Bayern Munich and outside the top three for just the second time in eight seasons.

Stoger did manage to provide a measure of stability after Bosz was cut loose, although the short-term contract he was handed never seemed likely to materialise into a permanent appointment.

'Bale is happy at Real Madrid' - McManaman doubts summer switch for Man Utd target

Gareth Bale is “happy in Real Madrid” and likely to stick around to fight for his future, claims former Blancos star Steve McManaman. The Wales international has endured another testing campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu, with injuries and tactical tinkering limiting his impact.

With Zinedine Zidane having taken to benching the 28-year-old at times, it has been suggested that a summer move could be made – with Manchester United reported to be long-standing suitors.

Bale’s representatives have, however, sought to curb the transfer talk at regular intervals and McManaman believes that a three-time Champions League winner would prefer to remain in Spain.

A man who enjoyed four productive years in Madrid between 1999 and 2003 told Goal: “Knowing the player and some close people to him, I can say that he is happy in Real Madrid.“His future will only depend on him, and the final of the Champions League may be decisive for his future. “He is happy, but he is not getting enough time of play.

“He didn't start against Juventus and didn't play the first game against Bayern Munich, so that may influence him, but his lifestyle in Madrid is lovely and he is playing for the greatest club in the world.”While Bale is being linked with a move away from Madrid this summer, Mohamed Salah is among those believed to be on the Blancos’ wish list.

The Egypt international has starred for Liverpool this season, netting 43 goals and collecting numerous prestigious prizes, with it even suggested that he could come into Ballon d’Or consideration for 2018.McManaman is delighted to see another of his former clubs benefiting from the talents of an elite performer, but does not expect him to be on the move in the next window either.

The former Reds winger added: “Salah has the quality to play for Real Madrid, but he has only spent nine months in Liverpool and he should repeat his current form for many seasons to confirm himself.“I don't see him in Real Madrid soon.”What will happen soon is a Champions League final clash between Liverpool and Madrid, Bale and Salah.

Two European heavyweights are set to lock horns in Kiev on May 26, with McManaman expecting an exciting encounter between two attacking teams. He said: “It'll be a very tough game for both teams, but Liverpool is in a better form and their style is more attractive.

“Real Madrid is more experienced though and they won the last two Champions Leagues, and that will be an advantage for them. It'll be a very entertaining game for sure.”

Arsenal offered hope in Lemar chase as Pires expects summer switch

Arsenal may be about to see the door opened to Monaco winger Thomas Lemar, with former Gunners star Robert Pires expecting his fellow Frenchman to be on the move this summer.

Arsene Wenger targeted the France international in 2017, only to see late approaches knocked back prior to the transfer deadline passing.Interest may, however, be rekindled once a new man takes the helm at Emirates Stadium.

Lemar, as a 22-year-old talent, remains a solid option for several suitors for the present and future, with Pires of the opinion that he could be heading to England after World Cup 2018.He told bwin: “Thomas Lemar will leave Monaco after the World Cup this summer.“I think he needs a new challenge and would love to experience a new country.

“Arsenal were of course interested last year but I don’t know if that’s still the case now that Arsene Wenger will no longer be manager. He would be suited to the Premier League.”Lemar may not be the only star turn swapping Ligue 1 for the Premier England when the transfer window re-opens.

Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir is another player attracting plenty of interest, with Liverpool reported to be leading the hunt for his signature.Pires expects there to be a scramble for the 24-year-old if he is made available, with his qualities making him an attractive option for clubs around the world. He added: “I think Lyon will receive offers from clubs across Europe for Nabil Fekir this summer.

“He has a lot of quality. He’s fast, he’s strong and he has a lot of quality.“He has a profile that would fit the Premier League very well and I would be surprised if there weren’t attempts to sign him this year.“Lyon have a fantastic academy and they are the best club for young players.”
