Belgium 5 Tunisia 2: Lukaku and Hazard shine as Red Devils run riot

    4D8D5A2B00000578-5877227-image-a-54_1529756679748.jpg

Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard both scored braces as Belgium crushed Tunisia 5-2 to all but secure their place in the World Cup knockout stages.

The Red Devils just need England to avoid defeat to Panama in Sunday's other Group G game to confirm their last-16 spot and no team at Russia 2018 will want to be drawn against Roberto Martinez's side after this swashbuckling display.Belgium were dominant from the outset, taking a 2-0 lead inside 16 minutes through Hazard's penalty and Lukaku's fine finish.

Dylan Bronn then handed the African side an unlikely lifeline before Lukaku - who scored twice in the opening 3-0 win over Panama - restored Belgium's lead to become his country's all-time top scorer at major tournaments with seven goals.

Hazard netted his second early in the second half, while substitute Michy Batshuayi – who had earlier missed three golden opportunities – scored a fifth in the 90th minute. Wahbi Khazri bagged a late consolation for Tunisia, but it did little to take the shine off a memorable result for Belgium.

Should England overcome Panama then only top spot in the group will be at stake when Belgium face Gareth Southgate's side on Thursday, while Tunisia will be eliminated should the result of Sunday's game be anything other than an unlikely Panama win. Belgium, who named the same starting XI that cruised past Panama in their opening game, got off to a great start after six minutes thanks to some clumsy defending from Syam Ben Youssef.

The full-back's late challenge on Hazard was deemed, with the use of VAR, to have been just inside the area and the Chelsea man stepped up to crack the resulting spot-kick into the bottom-left corner.Hazard failed to turn home Lukaku's low cross from close-range soon after but the latter doubled the Red Devils' advantage after 16 minutes.

Dries Mertens won possession just inside the Tunisia half before driving forward and feeding Lukaku. The Manchester United striker then arrowed a low strike across Farouk Ben Mustapha into the bottom-right corner for his third goal of the tournament.Any thoughts that the rampant Belgians would accelerate out of sight were dispelled - at least briefly - just two minutes later, though.

Khazri's inswinging free-kick from the left was met by Bronn, who flashed a header past Thibaut Courtois entirely against the run of play. That goal served to halt Belgium's early dominance, but they did grab a third with almost the last kick of the half.

The impressive Thomas Meunier found Lukaku inside the area and the in-form striker clipped a delightful finish over the onrushing Mustapha.

Any faint hopes that Tunisia had of clawing their way back into the game were extinguished six minutes into the second half when Hazard scored his second. Toby Alderweireld's long pass from defence was taken on the chest by Hazard, who then rounded Mustapha to stroke into an empty net.

With the game essentially wrapped up, Martinez opted to bring Lukaku off before the hour, the striker having picked up a knock on his foot earlier in the game.Yannick Carrasco came close to adding a fifth goal when his whipped effort from outside the area fizzed agonisingly past the post, while Batshuayi saw an effort cleared off the line by Yassine Meriah after he had rounded the goalkeeper.

Batshuayi looked like he would endure a miserable afternoon after two more missed opportunities – one crashing back off the crossbar from close-range – but the Chelsea man finally scored late on, meeting Youri Tielemans' fine cross at the back post with a controlled half-volley.

Khazri scored a consolation deep into stoppage time after a neat swivel in the box, but it mattered little as Belgium comfortably took a giant stride towards the last 16.

South Korea 1 Mexico 2: Hernandez nets landmark goal as last 16 beckons

    4D8EEC9300000578-5877801-Hernandez_celebrates_after_his_goal_which_was_scored_in_the_seco-m-79_1529771462078.jpg

Javier Hernandez hit his 50th international goal as Mexico edged closer to progression from World Cup Group F with a 2-1 victory over South Korea.Mexico's all-time leading scorer was well marshalled by South Korea's defence for much of Saturday's clash in Rostov-on-Don, but took his chance when it came in the 66th minute, slotting home in composed fashion at the culmination of a wonderful counter-attack.

Hernandez's goal was nothing less than Mexico, who beat defending champions Germany 1-0 last time out, deserved following another accomplished performance, with South Korea having rallied following Carlos Vela's 26th-minute penalty. It was not always smooth sailing for Juan Carlos Osorio's side, though, with Lee Yong and Son Heung-min passing up presentable opportunities in the early stages.

However, Jang Hyun-soo's handball gave referee Milorad Mazic little choice but to point to the spot – the number of penalties awarded in Russia consequently surpassing the 13 across the entirety of the previous World Cup – and Vela, who announced the death of his grandfather following the win over Germany, converted.

Hernandez's strike means Mexico will progress to the last 16 if Germany fail to beat Sweden, with Son Heung-min's added-time stunner not enough to stop South Korea staring at a potential group-stage exit.

Hirving Lozano was Mexico's hero on matchday one and the winger proved his worth at the other end in the 12th minute with a superb block to deny Yong.South Korea threatened again nine minutes later, Son breaking clear of Mexico's line before letting rip with a low drive that Hector Moreno did well to keep out.

Mexico showed their quality on the break again when Miguel Layun fired in a cross that Lozano very nearly got on the end of, but they did not have to wait much longer to take the lead.

With South Korea's defence in disarray, Jang clearly handled Andres Guardado's cross and referee Mazic did not hesitate in awarding the penalty, Vela stepping up and sending Cho Hyun-woo the wrong way.

Vela almost turned provider two minutes later with a neat ball into Layun, but the former Watford man lashed his effort over from close range.

South Korea wanted a penalty of their own after the restart when Moon Seon-min's strike clipped Carlos Salcedo's arm, but the referee correctly waved away their appeals.Ki Sung-yueng was the next to test Mexico's resolve, stinging the palms of Guillermo Ochoa with a rasping first-time strike.

Not to be outdone, Cho was at his best soon after, South Korea's goalkeeper lunging to his right to tip Hernandez's goal-bound shot wide.Hernandez would not be denied again, though, the West Ham striker making no mistake in drilling in his landmark goal to send the raucous Mexican crowd into raptures.

Son's sublime 20-yard strike into the top-left corner punctured Mexico's defence in the third minute of stoppage time, but it would prove little more than a consolation as South Korea slumped to a second successive defeat.

    Germany going down wage.
They lack a certain kind of creativity tbh. Very compact but meh. Similar to how Bayern plays but without the aggression.
Since Euros I've not seen something spectacular from them and they could do so much more

Petit: Messi is not a leader like Ronaldo

Lionel Messi does not have the same leadership qualities as Cristiano Ronaldo, according to former Barcelona player Emmanuel Petit.Messi has struggled to make an impact so far at Russia 2018, with Argentina on the brink of an early World Cup exit following their humiliating 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Friday.

Whereas Ronaldo netted a hat-trick in Portugal's 3-3 draw with Spain before scoring their winner against Morocco, Messi has floundered in front of goal - missing a penalty against Iceland before putting in an underwhelming display in Nizhny Novgorod.

Jorge Sampaoli's side must now beat Nigeria to stand a chance of qualifying, although they could still miss out should Iceland manage an unlikely victory over Croatia, and Petit - a World Cup winner with France in 1998 - insists Messi must shoulder some of the blame.

"He's not a leader. He's no Ronaldo in that regard. Messi is one of the best players ever, but he needs to show that mentality," Petit told Paddy Power ."He needs to wake up! When things go well with Barcelona he's a terrific player.

"We've seen it in the Champions League though, when things don't go well, he can disappear on the pitch."He's not there anymore. He's not running, he's walking. He's not concerned about the ball. Come on."

Argentina only qualified for the World Cup due to Messi's heroics in a crunch qualifier against Ecuador, as the Barca star scored a hat-trick to secure qualification.

However, Messi's brilliance on that occasion masked serious flaws with Sampaoli's set-up, and Petit believes slumping out in the group stage could be the wake up call Argentina need.

"The whole team's body language was so poor, no confidence, no trust between each other. The way they looked, I cannot see Argentina qualifying now," he continued."It would be a shame to see them qualify, because against Iceland they looked terrible, with no inspiration, nothing at all.

"And the manager Sampaoli has made so many mistakes since the start of the tournament, in choosing his team, making substitutions, everything."You remember so many Argentina teams with great players in the past, but this team is so far from those. They look terrible."

‘Mission not completed’ – Garba Lawal charges Nigeria to focus on Argentina game

Nigeria still need to fight against Argentina to complete their mission in the group stage after Iceland’s fall, according to ex-international Garba Lawal.Following their 2-0 loss to Croatia on June 16, the Super Eagles bounced back to defeat Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side to record their first win at their 2018 Fifa World Cup.

Gernot Rohr tweaked his setup for the clash against the Vikings at the Volgograd Arena. Ahmed Musa, a notable change, scored a second-half brace to down the tournament debutant.

And the former Super Eagles winger who played at the 1998 and 2002 World Cup tournaments showered praise on the players for their performances and urged them to shift their focus to Jorge Sampaoli’s side in their final group fixture
"Kudos to our players, they did wonderfully well. The coach made some decisions yesterday which were fantastic for us," Lawal told Goal.

"Games have different approach and formation which depend on the type of team you are playing. I hope it works against Argentina. Mission one [against Iceland] is done. The second one is against Argentina.

"The group is still open and tricky, we still have all to play for against Argentina. We still need to fight the hard way because the mission is not completed yet."Croatia have qualified already and they might want to rest their key players in their last match.”

Friday’s triumph shot the three-time African champions to the second spot in the Group D standings with three points from two games while Croatia sit at the summit of the group with six points, and qualification to the knockout round.

The battle for the second-place goes to down to the wire between the Super Eagles, Iceland and Argentina, and the 44-year-old has advised Gernot Rohr’s men ahead of their game at the Saint Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday.

"We need to play like we did against Iceland, though there were a lot of mistakes but we were just very lucky. We need to play more attacking football and create more threats against Argentina,” he continued."Iceland were not mature enough because they made many first-half chances which they did not convert, we would have been punished if we were playing a big team.

"In the second half, everything changed and we saw the hunger to win. The players' played well after the restart but in big games, there's nothing like second half, you must always play with strategies and it is always good if you can finish games in the first half. For instance, Brazil scored two classical goals in added time against Costa Rica, things like that qualifies them as a good team. That's the difference."

'Lukaku deserves everything' - Hazard praises Belgium's goal hero after Tunisia win

Eden Hazard has heaped praise on Belgium team-mate Romelu Lukaku, stating that the striker's work-rate means he fully merits his wonderful recent record with the Red Devils. Hazard netted twice, as did Lukaku, with Michy Batshuayi adding a late effort as Roberto Martinez's men strolled to a 5-2 success in Moscow to move to the brink of qualification for the last 16.

Lukaku pulled level with Cristiano Ronaldo on four goals in the race to land the Golden Boot, having become the first man since Diego Maradona in 1986 to score twice in consecutive World Cup games.

And Hazard was fulsome in his praise of the Manchester United striker."I think the guy deserves everything," he added. "He works hard in training, he's scoring a lot of goals and we are winning games."We are in a good moment playing together, we are stronger when we play together. When we pass to him in front of goal, he never misses."

Hazard was taken off with the points in the bag, with Martinez later revealing the 27-year-old has a minor niggle in his calf."I felt it in the first half," said Hazard, "but it is not something big."Tunisia are all but out of the World Cup, having adopted a front-foot strategy that ultimately proved foolhardy.

Hazard, who was named the man of the match, added: "I think the match was easy because we scored after five minutes and we knew Tunisia needed to win and would leave spaces and would be open. "Our strength was to counter and move upfield very quickly. This enabled us to score five goals."

Germany 2 Sweden 1: Late Kroos winner brings Low's men back from the brink

    4D908E5900000578-5877941-image-a-99_1529783845433.jpg

Germany came back from the brink of a humiliating World Cup exit as Toni Kroos scored a sensational stoppage-time winner to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sweden.

Kroos found the net with a wickedly curling set-piece in the 95th minute of a game that brought out the best and worst of Joachim Low's world champions, who were reduced to 10 men when Jerome Boateng was sent off with eight minutes remaining.

It capped a dramatic turnaround in a match that Germany could not lose after Die Mannschaft were beaten by Mexico in their opening Group F game, but such a scenario was on the cards when Ola Toivonen's superb lob gave Sweden a lead they held until half-time.But Low's team-talk at the break obviously struck a chord with the world champions, who levelled early in the second half through Marco Reus' scrappy effort.

Boateng's dismissal threatened to unravel their efforts to get back into the match and it looked as though they would have to settle for a point that would have left their hopes of progressing from the group hanging in the balance, but, with the clock winding down, Kroos' stunner sparked jubilant German celebrations and simultaneously broke Swedish hearts.

The result leaves Group F wide open with no team yet mathematically through. Mexico lead the way on six points, while Germany and Sweden are on three, and South Korea still on zero.

Germany dazzled Sweden with lightning-fast passing in the opening exchanges and Julian Draxler had a shot blocked from close range before he toe-poked a left-footed effort narrowly wide from a tight angle soon after.

Emil Forsberg was pulled back by Thomas Muller on Sweden's first foray into German territory but no free-kick was given and, after Victor Lindelof cleared a Marco Reus cross away from danger, Janne Andersson's men were denied what looked like a clear penalty.

Viktor Claesson's pass put Marcus Berg through one-on-one with Manuel Neuer when Boateng appeared to bundle the Sweden striker to the ground without playing the ball, but referee Szymon Marciniak ignored Sweden's ardent protests.

Germany lost Sebastian Rudy when he left the field with a bloody nose after a collision with Toivonen moments before the Sweden forward landed another blow as he burst into the box to control a Claesson cross on his chest and lift his shot over Neuer into the far corner of the net in some style.Substitute Ilkay Gundogan and Berg exchanged dangerous long-range shots at the end of the first half and Low sent on Mario Gomez for Draxler at the start of the second half.

Less than three minutes later Germany drew level when Timo Werner's cross evaded Gomez but found Reus, who met it with his knee and turned the ball beyond Robin Olsen into the bottom corner of the net.Low's men did not stop there, and Muller headed narrowly wide before Jonas Hector forced Olsen into a good save to keep the scores level.

Reus should have made it 2-1 when his attempted back-heel failed to connect with Joshua Kimmich's low cross. With just under 10 minutes left, Boateng was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Berg, and Neuer then made a dramatic one-handed save to deny substitute John Guidetti a winning goal with a downward header.

Olsen pulled off an even better save at the other end, parrying Gomez's powerful header over the crossbar, and Julian Brandt crashed a thunderous shot onto the post from an offside position as time looked to have run out on Germany. But Kroos hooked a sweetly struck effort from a well-worked free-kick with Reus on the left into the far corner of the net from a tight angle to allow his country to breathe a huge sigh of relief.
