Chelsea 1 Vidi 0: Morata ends drought to earn Group L win

    4775984-6241409-image-a-49_1538685941300.jpg

Alvaro Morata ended his goal drought to earn Chelsea a 1-0 home win against Vidi in the Europa League.

The striker - without a goal since the middle of August - missed a great early chance but struck in the second half to put the Blues in a dominant position at the top of Group L.

Willian's flick-on gave Morata the chance and the Spain striker's instinctive finish flashed past goalkeeper Tomas Tujvel at Stamford Bridge.

Loic Nego had a series of chances for the Hungarian side, but Chelsea held firm to follow up a matchday one 1-0 win over PAOK with another narrow Europa League victory.

Morata had seven shots without hitting the target against PAOK and the striker missed another superb chance in the 16th minute.Having beaten the offside trap to advance on goalkeeper Tujvel and after creating an angle for the shot, Morata somehow fired wide from eight yards out.

Despite Chelsea's dominance Vidi almost scored against the run of play before the break, Nego poking wide after a mix-up between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Andreas Christensen, then shooting straight at the goalkeeper from close range.Nego was proving a significant threat and Kepa had to make an excellent save from his left-footed drive shortly after the restart to keep the scores level.

Such was Sarri's concern he sent on Eden Hazard for Pedro in the 54th minute, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek bending a shot narrowly wide soon after the Belgium star's introduction. But Morata broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, Cesc Fabregas finding Willian in the box with the Brazilian's clever header slammed home by the striker for his first goal since scoring in a 3-2 win against Arsenal.

Substitute Ross Barkley almost marked his England recall with a flicked header, while Kepa made a vital late save from Istvan Kovacs, but one goal again proved enough for Chelsea in the Europa League.

Qarabag 0 Arsenal 3: Gunners punish wasteful hosts

    4771360-6240925-image-a-45_1538677262575.jpg

Emile Smith Rowe and Matteo Guendouzi scored their first competitive Arsenal goals as the Gunners resisted heavy pressure and claimed a 3-0 win at Qarabag in the Europa League.

Smith Rowe's second-half goal made him the club's youngest goalscorer since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted in September 2011 to cap off a mature performance, and the Gunners extended their winning run to eight matches as Guendouzi finished Qarabag off.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos gave Arsenal a somewhat fortuitous early opener, though the first half finished with Qarabag well on top and only the heroics of Bernd Leno kept the visitors ahead.

But Smith Rowe eased Arsenal's worries early in the second half and, although the hosts remained a potent threat, they were seen off by the Gunners, who have six points from two Group E outings.Arsenal started brightly and, thanks to a slice of luck, broke the deadlock after just four minutes – Nacho Monreal's header from a corner striking Sokratis and finding the net.

Young midfielder Smith Rowe went close to a second 14 minutes later, but he could only find the side-netting when stretching to meet Sead Kolasinac's low cross.

But Qarabag improved and Bernd Leno had to be alert, denying Mahir Madatov when one-on-one just prior to the half-hour mark, before brilliantly blocking Filip Ozobic's volley late in the half.Arsenal secured themselves some breathing space early in the second half – Smith Rowe coolly finishing on the break after being fed by Alex Iwobi.

Innocent Emeghara was then guilty of shooting at Leno from close range in the 62nd minute, and Guendouzi put the game beyond the hosts towards the end, finding the bottom-left corner from 20 yards.

AC Milan 3 Olympiacos 1: Higuain, Cutrone mount Rossoneri rescue act

    4777874-6241767-image-a-22_1538690971572.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain returned from injury to help a Patrick Cutrone-inspired AC Milan come from behind in a 3-1 win over Olympiacos in the Europa League.

Argentina striker Higuain, sidelined with a leg problem for the past two matches, scored in between Cutrone's crucial brace amid a game-changing burst of three goals in nine second-half minutes.Milan had slipped back into old habits prior to their 70th-minute equaliser, struggling to convert possession into chances as their six-match unbeaten run in all competitions appeared destined to end.

But, having fallen behind to Miguel Angel Guerrero's first-half header, the Serie A side rallied upon Cutrone's introduction and overcame a lacklustre opening hour to stay top of Group F on six points.

Milan would have been ahead early had an offside Samu Castillejo not absent-mindedly touched Giacomo Bonaventura's goal-bound header into the net.Instead, they fell behind from Olympiacos' first real attack in the 14th minute as Leonardo Koutris crossed for Guerrero to expertly nod into the bottom-right corner.

Jose Sa protected the advantage with a low save from Higuain and the Portuguese goalkeeper should have been worked a second time before the break, but Castillejo misjudged Suso's inviting delivery. The Rossoneri steadily stepped up the pressure after the interval and parity came when Cutrone met Ricardo Rodriguez's cross with a looping header.

Suddenly buoyed, a second came six minutes later through Higuain's cool-headed finish in a crowded box and the startling comeback was quickly capped off by Cutrone, the match-winner tapping home from fellow substitute Hakan Calhanoglu's fizzing low ball across the face.

:frown::angry::angry:Man Utd players throwing Mourinho under the bus and trying to get him sacked - Ince

Manchester United’s underperforming squad are trying to get Jose Mourinho sacked, claims Paul Ince, with those to have downed tools accused of throwing their manager “under the bus”.The Red Devils, amid a backdrop of internal rifts behind the scenes, have hit an alarming slump over recent weeks, going four games without a win.

A sorry sequence of results, which was extended by a goalless draw with Valencia in midweek Champions League competition, has seen pressure piled onto beleaguered boss Mourinho.

The Portuguese has cut a frustrated figure throughout the 2018-19 campaign, with a disappointing transfer window having set the tone for inconsistent performances and reports of divides in the United camp.

Ince believes those rifts have seen a number of players give up, with the former Red Devils midfielder telling Paddy Power: "It baffles me that Manchester United players are choosing when they want to put effort into playing for their club.

"Every player in the shirt should be putting in effort and showing desire, even if you don't get the result."There's no excuse for not putting in effort. These are professional footballers, on astronomical wages, playing for one of the biggest clubs ever.

"It doesn't sit right with me that it looks like they can't be bothered. Yes, there might be a couple of players who are trying - but you need the whole team to be contributing."It looks to me as though they're not interested in playing for Jose Mourinho anymore."

Ince added on the uncomfortable situation Mourinho now faces as his job continues to be called into question: "When I played for the club, I saw it as an honour and although I didn't always play well, no one could ever accuse me of not putting the work in."What I find disappointing is those players are happy for Mourinho to take the blame. They should be admitting the fact that they are responsible for the way they're playing.

"They're throwing him under the bus, despite putting in poor performances every week. And they're getting away with it. Some players want Man United to get beat, just so that there's pressure on Mourinho to be sacked.

"The amount of times that you see a new manager go to a club and suddenly, the whole team are up for it. You have to question the attitude of the players."

United and Mourinho will get the chance to right a few wrongs when they welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford on Saturday, with a morale-boosting victory required to send them and a frustrated fan base into the international break feeling a little more optimistic.

Southgate signs England extension through to 2022 World Cup

Gareth Southgate has signed a contract extension that will see him remain as England manager until after the 2022 World Cup.

Despite still having two years to run on the deal he agreed upon stepping up from the Under-21 side to take over from Sam Allardyce in November 2016, Southgate has been rewarded with fresh terms for leading the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

England reached the last four of the competition for the first time since 1990 but were beaten by Croatia and finished fourth following a 2-0 loss to Belgium.

Southgate oversaw two wins and as many draws after being named interim manager in the wake of Allardyce's exit, which earned him the right to take on the job permanently. The 48-year-old has since won 13, drawn four and lost six of his matches at the helm.On penning fresh terms, he said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the national team through the next two major tournaments.

“The job remains an incredible privilege and a true honour. Experiencing at first-hand how the nation united behind the team this summer was something special and it will be great to see how far this young squad can go in the years to come.

“I must acknowledge the hard work and commitment of my staff and the players over the last two years. I have learned a great deal from them and their passion and professionalism in representing England has been an inspiration to my own work – in particular Steve Holland, who I’m pleased to be continuing to work alongside through to 2022.

“I would also like to thank Martin, Dan Ashworth and The FA Board for their support since my original appointment.”The former Middlesbrough boss has introduced more youth to the England set-up, phasing out experienced members of the squad like former captain Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Gary Cahill and cultivating a positive, cohesive atmosphere.

England suffered defeat in their Nations League opener at home to Spain in September but will hope to get off the mark and avenge their World Cup exit against Group A4 rivals Croatia on October 12.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn added on Southgate's new deal: "Securing Gareth on a longer-term contract was always a priority for us. He has performed remarkably well and has given everyone the belief that England can compete on a world stage again.

“He is also a tremendous ambassador for the organisation, our development teams and the wider work of The FA, although his focus is rightly solely on helping the elite team.

“We wish him all the best for the rest of the UEFA Nations League and UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying next year, which of course brings with it the exciting prospect of final-round matches at Wembley.”

Giggs warns sacking Mourinho will cause Man Utd more problems

Ryan Giggs has warned Manchester United that sacking Jose Mourinho would cause more problems than it would solve.

Talk of an imminent change in the Old Trafford dugout continues to build, with a four-game winless run seeing pressure piled onto the current man at the helm.Various candidates are being mooted to fill Mourinho’s shoes should he be moved on, with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino all reported to be in the frame.

Giggs, though, believes that further disruption is the last thing that United need, with the club already onto their third manager since Sir Alex Ferguson slipped into retirement back in 2013.The United legend and current Wales boss told reporters when asked if Mourinho should be relieved of his duties: “No. They're going through a tough time at the moment.

“I said that last time, where do they go? Change now and you'll be in the same position in a year or two years quite possibly.“The problem of late has been forward planning. So just take stock, it’s a tough time, but my stance hasn’t changed.”“I believe he should keep his job.”

Giggs’ comments stand in stark contrast to those of fellow ‘Class of ‘92’ star Paul Scholes, with the ex-United midfielder having held little back in his assessment of goings on under Mourinho.

He told BT Sport ahead of a goalless draw with Valencia in the Champions League which came on the back of a humbling 3-1 defeat at West Ham: "I'm actually slightly surprised that he survived after Saturday, the performance was that bad."He's coming out in press conferences and he's constantly having a go at players, he's having a go at people above him because he's not getting what he wants.

"I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he's embarrassing the club."

Various other former United stars have also had their say on Mourinho’s situation, with Paul Ince accusing certain members of an underperforming squad of throwing their manager under the bus as they try to get him sacked.

It remains to be seen whether that will be the case again in the Red Devils’ next outing, with Newcastle due at Old Trafford on Saturday as they attempt to pile yet more misery on an out-of-sorts opponent.

Juventus back Ronaldo after rape allegations

Juventus have backed player Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of a summons being issued for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner over an alleged rape.Kathryn Mayorga accused the player of sexual assault in her hotel room in 2009 via an interview released last Friday by Der Spiegel.

Las Vegas Police Department (LVPD) have since confirmed that they are reopening the case but Juve, who signed Ronaldo from Real Madrid in the summer for £100m ($128m), have vowed to stand by their player via statements posted on social media.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has shown in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus,” the Turin giants said via Twitter.“The events allegedly dating back to almost 10 years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by anyone who has come into contact with this great champion.”

The statement comes in the way of a denial from the player, who said: “Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”

Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s lawyer has previously said: “The reporting in Spiegel is blatantly illegal.”He added that he had been instructed to seek compensation for "moral damages" over "probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years".

A statement released from LVPD, reported by the BBC, said: “At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description.

“As of September 2018, the case has been reopened and our detectives are following up on information being provided.”

Ronaldo missed the club’s midweek 3-0 Champions League encounter against Young Boys after being dismissed in their opening match against Valencia for which he received a one-game ban, but is slated to make a return for the Serie A leaders when they face Udinese in league action on Saturday.

He has scored three times in eight matches since moving to Italy, having previously found the net 450 times to become Real Madrid’s record scorer.

:(Neville blasts Man United as 'an absolute disgrace' after reported Mourinho sacking

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has blasted a reported decision to sack Jose Mourinho as "an absolute disgrace".

The Daily Mirror reported late on Friday that Mourinho will be replaced as manager regardless of United's result in their Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Mourinho gave a short and terse news conference earlier in the day, after which Neville said the 55-year-old "looked fed up" following heavy criticism of his side's poor run of form, having won just three of their last nine games in all competitions.

Neville was enraged about the suggestion Mourinho will be forced to lead out his team at Old Trafford knowing his days in the job are numbered, accusing the United hierarchy of "playing Football Manager with the biggest club in the world".

"I think I'm furious," he said on Sky Sports after a lengthy pause. "I'm furious going back three, four years ago, when [David] Moyes was sacked and it broke the day before. Louis van Gaal was sacked the evening before a cup final [in 2016], finding out through other people."If this is true and Mourinho is going to walk out at Old Trafford [on Saturday] as a dead man walking, those fans will turn towards the board room like never before.

"Jose Mourinho will get the biggest support of his life tomorrow and I'll be there to give it to him. It's an absolute disgrace. Where are the values at Manchester United? This has been going on for five or six years.

"Jose Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world. I think any manager would struggle at Manchester United, with the way in which the recruitment is handled, the way in which it operates.

"Enough is enough for me. I love that football club. I absolutely love it to death. It's been my life, it's given me everything and I'm not turning on my football club, but I have to say, something has to change, and it isn't the manager. It's above that.
"I hope it's not true but, if it is true, it's an absolute disgrace. The dressing room is leading what's happening. The tail is wagging the dog."I'm reacting maybe a little bit emotionally, but I don't really care, to be honest with you. It's difficult running a football club, managing a football club, playing in a football team. But there is something rotten to the core.

"They're playing Football Manager with the biggest club in the world. Stop it."

Mourinho refuses to accept sole blame for Man Utd struggles

Jose Mourinho has pointed out that “sometimes things are not just in the manager’s hands” as his future at Manchester United continues to be called into question.

With pressure having built steadily on the Portuguese over recent weeks, it is now being suggested that a decision has already been made to part with his services.
A Premier League clash with Newcastle on Saturday could be Mourinho’s last, with those in power at Old Trafford reportedly ready to make a change regardless of the result.

United are currently four games without a win in all competitions, with disappointing results having been endured in the English top-flight, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Mourinho has been forced to shoulder much of the blame for those struggles, but he is refusing to accept sole responsibility, telling reporters: "Sometimes things are not just in the manager's hands."

He added on expectations and the need to put performances into perspective after a disappointing summer in the transfer window which saw rivals spend big once more: "Success has a direct relation with your own potential and a direct relation with the potential if your opponents.

"The last season was phenomenal exactly because of these two factors - our potential and the potential of our opponents."I think opponents with much more potential than us finished behind us. That is the reason why it was a phenomenal season."

United finished as runners-up behind record-breaking champions Manchester City in 2017-18 and Mourinho believes that the Red Devils will come good again this term in time.

He added: "This team can do much better than what it is doing and the team will do much better than what it is doing."But, if you want me to repeat I will. Last season was a fantastic season for us and if you want something more, in pre-season I also told you that this season would be very difficult.

"I think we have enough potential to be doing better than what we are doing in the Premier League. We are better than this and because of that our situation is going to improve, I have no doubts about that."

Mourinho feels a corner could be turned against Newcastle, with United going in search of a first victory at Old Trafford since the opening weekend of the season.

"We can win against Newcastle, but it's a difficult match. We can win, we want to win," he said."We have possibilities to win the match, but I refuse to say we have three points in the pocket. I have to respect an opponent, I have to respect a manager with an history of trophies and know-how.

"That's the way I was brought up in life and in football - to respect."

Dybala out to be 'first among humans' behind Messi and Ronaldo

Juventus striker Paulo Dybala insists he cannot match the achievements of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, and is instead out to be "first among the humans".

The Argentina international has scored 72 goals in just 147 appearances for the Bianconeri, and at the age of 24 Dybala is among the next generation of players looking to break the duopoly of Juventus team-mate Ronaldo and Barcelona's Messi.

Alessandro Del Piero has tipped Dybala and PSG star Kylian Mbappe to be take over from the two superstars, but the forward is insistent that no mere mortal can ascend to the throne while the eternal rivals are still playing.

“For that to be the case, Messi and Ronaldo would need to be at the twilight of their careers, but they are still doing extraordinary things,” Dybala said, per La Gazzetta dello Sport.“Messi and Cristiano are beyond the norm. My objective is to be first among the humans."

Speaking about other players who could potentially become the best in the world, Dybala has also hailed Real Madeis playmaker Isco, and insists he has always dreamed of being recognised as the finest player on the planet."Of the other humans, I like Isco, because he never loses the ball, but Neymar and Mbappé are also excellent players," he added.

“When I was a child, sitting in front of the campfire, I wished that I could win the Ballon d’Or. If you want to improve, you have to set high targets.”

'We can do much better' - Mourinho admits Man Utd's results are not good enough

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho conducted another short press conference where he admitted that there are 'many reasons' for the club's poor form and claimed that they 'can do much better'.

The Red Devils boss answered just five of six questions in a conference that lasted just over three-and-a-half minutes, where he stared directly ahead when asked if he could assure fans that he was doing everything in his power to turn things around.

One reporter questioned whether five games without a win was not good enough for a team like United, with Mourinho simply responding: "I accept."

The Portuguese also conceded that there are "many reasons" why they are going through such a poor run of form, but would not provide any further explanation.
United are looking to turn things around against Newcastle this weekend, and Mourinho stressed the importance of picking up all three points in order to move up the table.

"Very important," Mourinho insisted. "I know we are in the beginning of October and you look to tables all around Europe and in many of the leagues the tables in September, October, they don’t reflect what is going to happen in a few months later or even in the end of the season.

"We are in a position that we can do much better than that and to do that we need points, points that we lost especially in the last two Premier League matches with one point out of six. We know that to improve that position we need to win these three points, but we know that our opponent for different reasons also need the points."
