Inter 1 Barcelona 1: Blaugrana through despite Icardi leveller

    wire-5857710-1541547763-519_634x422.jpg

Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League last 16 despite late drama in a 1-1 draw against Inter at a rain-soaked San Siro. The Blaugrana looked set to register a fourth victory from four Group B matches when Malcom netted his first goal for the club seven minutes from time.

However, Mauro Icardi - otherwise anonymous as Inter struggled to trouble Barca - pounced to strike following a goalmouth scramble three minutes later, his goal crucial as Tottenham defeated PSV elsewhere.

Barca were still able to celebrate a place in the next round thanks to their superior head-to-head record against Inter, but this was a frustrating evening as they missed Lionel Messi's ruthless nature in the final third.
Ousmane Dembele drew an early stop from Samir Handanovic and Luis Suarez then curled one effort just over the top and sent a delicate lob wide, with Barcelona in control of proceedings from the off.

A sloppy start from Inter included a poor close-range Kwadwo Asamoah miss, but the majority of the chances continued to fall at the other end and Handanovic was again alert as the dangerous Suarez fizzed in a low strike shortly before half-time.Handanovic turned away a Philippe Coutinho drive following the restart, before the goalkeeper blocked Ivan Rakitic's tame finish, with Suarez furious that his goal seconds later was in vain as the ball was ruled to have gone behind for a corner.

The breakthrough finally came just after Malcom's introduction in place of Dembele, charging through on the right to meet Coutinho's pass and shoot beyond Handanovic.

But Barca were denied the three points as Icardi finally saw a ball drop at his feet in the area, swivelling to bury the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to the delirium of the home fans.

Porto 4 Lokomotiv Moscow 1: Conceicao's men dump Russians out

Hector Herrera scored inside 90 seconds of Porto's 4-1 win over Lokomotiv Moscow as Sergio Conceicao's men dumped their opponents out of the Champions League and strengthened their grip on Group D.

The Mexico international turned provider for Moussa Marega to double Porto's lead before half-time as Lokomotiv failed to deal with two players who had scored against them in a 3-1 defeat just two weeks earlier.

The result, combined with Schalke's victory over Galatasaray in the group's other game, condemned Yuri Semin's Lokomotiv side to a Champions League exit after failing to earn a single point from their four games so far.

Porto dealt with a potentially tricky final half-hour after Jefferson Farfan pulled one back, Jesus Corona and Otavio scoring to wrap up a third consecutive Champions League victory for the first time since November 2015, when Julen Lopetegui was in charge of the club.

Lokomotiv were caught out by an electric start by Porto and Marega powered his way into the penalty area in the second minute before cutting the ball back to Herrera, whose angled shot from just outside the six-yard box took a deflection on its way past Guilherme into the net.

Herrera returned the favour just before half-time, chipping a delightful pass into the path of Marega who drilled a low shot under Guilherme, beating the goalkeeper with power.

Herrera flashed a header onto the outside of the post after nine minutes of the second half and he was made to rue the miss when second-half substitute Farfan lost his marker and headed Aleksey Miranchuk's corner just inside the post shortly before the hour mark.

Any hopes Lokomotiv had of mounting a comeback disappeared when Guilherme's scuffed clearance fell to Oliver Torres and he played in Corona who guided the ball through the goalkeeper's legs and into the net before Otavio came on and lashed home a fourth in stoppage-time.

Napoli 1 Paris Saint-Germain 1: Silva mistake hands Partenopei top spot

Paris Saint-Germain squandered a chance to ignite their stuttering Champions League campaign as Napoli came from behind to earn a 1-1 home draw on Tuesday.

Lorenzo Insigne punished a Thiago Silva error from the penalty spot after 61 minutes to hand the Italian side leadership of Group C following Liverpool's earlier 2-0 loss to Red Star Belgrade, Napoli's next opponents.

Gianluigi Buffon, making his Champions League debut for PSG, had made several saves to preserve a lead earned by Juan Bernat, but his foul in attempting to atone for Silva's loose touch allowed his former Parma boss Carlo Ancelotti to have the last laugh.

Edinson Cavani's late introduction against his ex-employers failed to provide the inspiration PSG needed to convert a point into something more valuable to their hopes of advancing.

Neymar was lively in the opening exchanges and carved out a promising early chance for Marco Verratti, which drew Kalidou Koulibaly into a crucial block.
The Brazil star also provided the pass for a thumping Kylian Mbappe strike that flew across the face in the 23rd minute.

For all their attacking riches, PSG had wing-back Bernat to thank for breaking the deadlock with a composed close-range finish, Mbappe having bamboozled Raul Albiol before supplying the cutback.

Tottenham 2 PSV 1: Spurs back from the brink as Kane inspires late turnaround

    5853056-6360205-image-m-42_1541540985412.jpg

Harry Kane inspired a turnaround in the final 12 minutes to transform Tottenham's Champions League outlook as they beat PSV 2-1 to move to within three points of second-placed Inter.

Spurs appeared to be doomed as they trailed for much of the Group B match, but they turned things around late on to capitalise on the Italian side dropping points at home to Barcelona.

An early Luuk de Jong header forced Spurs to throw caution to the wind and they racked up 30 shots, but, for the most part, they came up against an inspired goalkeeper in the shape of Jeroen Zoet.

Spurs' pressure eventually told in the 78th minute as Kane got the equaliser and he then had a major role in the winner as Trent Sainsbury deflected the England striker's header past the despairing Zoet, teeing up Mauricio Pochettino's men nicely for two huge clashes with Inter and Barcelona.
Spurs were trailing after 61 seconds as De Jong rose highest in the penalty area after losing Dele Alli and sent an unstoppable header into the bottom-left corner.

For the rest of the first half the home side were dominant, but Zoet in PSV's goal was in fine form, making a brilliant double save to deny Christian Eriksen and Alli in the 28th minute.Alli was thwarted again just before the break, with Zoet acrobatically getting down to his right and pushing the shot away.

Spurs remained the controlling force after the restart, but they almost found themselves two behind in the 58th minute – Paulo Gazzaniga crucially stopping Gaston Pereiro's goal-bound header from a corner.

PSV's resistance was finally broken when Kane found the bottom-right corner with a left-footed strike following a Fernando Llorente knockdown.

Kane was to the fore once again in the dying embers of the contest, his headed attempted clipping Sainsbury on its way into the net to leave PSV on the brink of elimination.

Atletico Madrid 2 Borussia Dortmund 0: Saul & Griezmann get Simeone back on track

    5853038-6360391-image-a-14_1541540990165.jpg

Atletico Madrid returned to form in Champions League Group A as goals from Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezman earned a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund's 4-0 rout on matchday three condemned Diego Simeone to the heaviest defeat of his Atleti tenure, but Los Rojiblancos got back on track in style at Wanda Metropolitano.

Saul's goal after the half hour – a crisp finish at the culmination of a slick team move – opened the scoring, and despite a string of superb saves from Roman Burki, Griezmann wrapped up the points with 10 minutes remaining.

Things might have been different had Raphael Guerreiro kept a close-range header on target, but Atleti were well worthy of a win that lifts them level on points with Dortmund at the top of Group A.Despite a glut of Atleti pressure, Burki remained relatively untested until Saul broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute.

After winning possession in Dortmund's half, Saul exchanged passes with Filipe Luis before sending a first-time effort goalwards – Manuel Akanji failing to keep the ball out on the line.

Dortmund were fortunate not to be further behind in the next 10 minutes, Filipe Luis and Griezmann finding Burki in top form, while Lukasz Piszczek's last-ditch tackle denied Saul a second.

Juanfran's pinpoint pass into Angel Correa looked to have set up a certain goal on the hour, but Burki's crucial touch turned the ball wide.Guerreiro's introduction added balance to Dortmund's attack, and the substitute spurned the visitors' only true chance, heading over from Paco Alcacer's cross.

Griezmann showed no such profligacy at the other end, however, racing clear of his marker and keeping his cool to slot past Burki and make sure of a win that puts Atleti on the verge of progressing into the knockout stages.

Monaco 0 Club Brugge 4: Henry's men humbled as winless streak continues

    5848544-6360043-image-a-46_1541533736779.jpg

Monaco are facing an early exit from the Champions League after their dismal season hit a new low with a humiliating 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Club Brugge.

Hans Vanaken's brace and a fine goal from Wesley sensationally put Brugge - without a victory in their previous 11 matches in this competition - three up inside 24 minutes at Stade Louis II.

There was little in the way of a response from the hosts and Brugge even added a fourth with five minutes remaining, skipper Ruud Vormer taking advantage of more woeful defending.

As a result, Thierry Henry is still searching for his first victory since succeeding Leonardo Jardim as head coach last month, with Monaco's winless streak now standing at a remarkable 15 matches dating back to their opening game of the season in Ligue 1.

Monaco's hopes of progressing from Group A will be extinguished on Tuesday if Atletico Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund, while Brugge now have renewed hope of achieving at least a third-placed finish. The hosts had a great chance to move ahead early on, but Ethan Horvath pulled off a fine save low to his left to deny Sofiane Diop.

Brugge then moved in front after 12 minutes when Mats Rits' low cross from the right somehow found its way through to an unmarked Vanaken, who tucked away the easiest of finishes at the far post.

Vanaken calmly converted a penalty five minutes later after Antonio Barreca was adjudged to have handled a goalbound shot and Monaco were soon punished for more abysmal defending, a clinical Brugge counter-attack ending with Wesley cutting in from the left and firing a superb finish into the bottom-right corner.

Despite dominating possession, Henry's men looked bereft of confidence as they sought a reply and a shocking defensive mix-up allowed Vormer to rub salt in Monaco's wounds late on.

Red Star Belgrade 2 Liverpool 0: Pavkov double blows Group C wide open

    5846900-0-image-a-2_1541530355585.jpg

Red Star Belgrade blew Champions League Group C wide open and loosened Liverpool's grip on top spot after Milan Pavkov scored a first-half brace in a 2-0 win.

Liverpool went into the game hoping to open up a four-point gap at the summit before Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain faced each other later on Tuesday, but the visitors fell well short of expectations.

In the opening 45 minutes, Red Star looked a class apart from the team which lost 4-0 at Anfield two weeks ago, as Pavkov netted twice in seven minutes to leave Jurgen Klopp's side trailing by two at half-time.

The Premier League outfit's attempts to claw things back saw them hit the frame of the goal twice in the second half through Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah, but they were unable to make their pressure tell and Red Star held on to their first win in the group stage.
Liverpool should have had an early lead when Daniel Sturridge inexplicably smashed over from just six yards and Red Star were ruthless in their response.Pavkov broke the deadlock 22 minutes in with a towering header from Marko Marin's corner after evading the attentions of Virgil van Dijk.

The striker soon got his second, shrugging off Georginio Wijnaldum and beating Alisson with a fierce 25-yard drive to leave Klopp looking stunned on the touchline.Liverpool had a lucky escape at the start of the second period – the referee failing to award Red Star a penalty when a shot struck the arm of James Milner.

The Reds soon took charge, though their luck in front of goal showed no sign of improving, as a deflected Robertson delivery hit the crossbar and Salah's 72nd-minute effort clipped the outside of the upright.

Salah and Van Dijk then wasted late chances, as Red Star dug deep to open the door to Napoli or PSG in the hunt for first place.

Pogba unfazed by Mourinho's stripping of Man Utd vice-captaincy

Paul Pogba claims Jose Mourinho’s decision to strip him of a role as Manchester United’s vice-captain “doesn’t change anything”.

On the back of playing a leading role for France in their 2018 World Cup triumph, the 25-year-old midfielder was handed the armband by his club. With Antonio Valencia sidelined at the start of the campaign, Pogba was given the responsibility of leading United into Premier League battle.

He was, however, to see Mourinho rid him of that role amid reports of a rift in the Old Trafford ranks which has led to a breakdown in the working relationship between outspoken coach and flamboyant playmaker.

Pogba has remained a regular for the Red Devils despite being dropped down the captaincy pecking order and claims to have no issue with his manager’s choice, telling reporters of that call ahead of a Champions League clash with Juventus: “It didn’t affect me. I’m still playing and really happy to play.“The manager is the one who chooses who is going to be captain. If he takes the armband away, it doesn’t change anything for me.

“I just want to play, perform and give my best for the team, the fans and the club and that’s it. It didn’t really touch me or affect me.” Mourinho made his decision as Pogba’s form was questioned, with his actions sparking reports of an impending exit for the Frenchman as he struggled to justify an £89 million ($117m) price tag.

The Portuguese has, however, maintained throughout that he has never had any problem with a star performer and has stressed again that the pair are happy to be working in tandem.

“One thing is what the press says, and another thing is what Paul says and of course another thing is what I say,” Mourinho said.“The press says we have a terrible relationship, Paul some weeks ago said we had a typical coach-player relationship, I think we have a good relationship. I would classify it as a good relationship between a coach and a football player.”

With any issues being ironed out behind closed doors, United are in the process of trying to rebuild a season which has suffered a number of early setbacks.

Inconsistency continues to frustrate those at Old Trafford, but a battling 3-2 victory over Newcastle prior to the last international break saw Mourinho’s men collect three points at the start of a run which has delivered seven more from their last three outings.Pogba believes a dramatic win over the Magpies has been a catalyst for United, with confidence having slowly returned to the fold.

He said: “We started to realise we are Manchester United. Before that game it was really bad and confidence was low, we didn’t give enough but after the win over Newcastle we came back. [We] played really well against Chelsea, we played all together and when you play together it’s always easier.”

Wenger to AC Milan? Arsenal legend would be perfect fit, says Flamini

Arsene Wenger would be “great for AC Milan” if they decide to turn to the former Arsenal boss for inspiration, says Mathieu Flamini.

The Rossoneri are reported to be mulling over another managerial change as Gennaro Gattuso struggles to generate the performances and results required of him.If he were to be shown the door, then various experienced figures are believed to be lining up behind him.

Wenger, who remains without a club after bringing a 22-year spell at Arsenal to a close over the summer, is among those reported to be in the Milan frame. The iconic Frenchman has also been linked with roles at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but Flamini feels he would be a perfect fit at San Siro.

The ex-Milan midfielder, who worked under Wenger during two spells at Arsenal, told ESPN: "I'm very close to Arsene, it's been very inspiring for me to work with him. So I think he would be great for AC Milan."Even if they already have a great manager in Gattuso, who I played with.

"But Arsene, I worked with him for many years. I don't need to tell you he's an incredible manager. He proved it for many years. If he goes to AC Milan, I'm sure he'd do a great job."

Wenger has never coached in Italy before, but Flamini believes he would have little problem adjusting to the demands of life in Serie A having already proven himself to be a visionary in England."Arsene has a huge amount of experience, and he's very smart," he added."So he's someone who will be able to adapt to any type of football.

"And it would be an incredible ad for Italian football to have him there. And maybe he'll create a new style, who knows? He's done a lot for English football, coming here and creating this new football based on technique and short passes. So why not do that in Italy?"

While backing Wenger to make an imminent return to the dugout, Flamini is hoping that he will soon be back in football himself, with the 34-year-old currently a free agent after departing Spanish side Getafe. He said of his future: "I'm still very young. I'm still feeling good; I'm training every day.

"Because that's my passion, that's what I love the most is playing football.Everything is possible, we'll see what happens in the future. I haven't turned the page yet."
