Manchester United 2 Reading 0: Sanchez hurt as Solskjaer's side ease through

    8158684-6560187-image-m-59_1546695153265.jpg

Manchester United made it five wins from five under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with an unconvincing 2-0 victory over Reading in the FA Cup third round.

First-half goals from Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku were enough for the home side at Old Trafford, although the nine changes made to the team that won at Newcastle United left them looking largely disjointed.Reading, who sit 23rd in the Championship, enjoyed 60 per cent of the possession and had 13 shots to United's eight, although a comeback never truly looked likely.

The downside was the fact Alexis Sanchez had to go off 64 minutes in, having apparently hurt the hamstring that kept him sidelined throughout December.

Mata dispatched a cool penalty - his first FA Cup goal since the victorious final of May 2016 - after referee Stuart Atwell penalised Omar Richards for a foul on the Spaniard following a VAR consultation, with Fred's strike having been disallowed for offside in the same move.It was harsh on Reading, who had started better, and they should have been level when Danny Loader made a mess of a one-on-one with Sergio Romero after Lukaku was denied by Anssi Jaakkola at the other end.

Andy Yiadom was denied by Romero at his near post as United continued to struggle, but a stray pass from John Swift proved costly in first-half injury time, with Lukaku rounding Jaakkola to make it 2-0 from Sanchez's throughball.

Solskjaer handed youngster Tahith Chong the chance to impress off the bench and was then forced to take off Sanchez, who indicated his troublesome right hamstring was again causing him discomfort.

Sone Aluko was denied by a good save from Romero, but United were mostly comfortable in the closing minutes as they secured their place in next Monday's fourth-round draw.

Chelsea 2 Nottingham Forest 0: Morata at the double as emotional Fabregas appears to bid farewell

    8160808-6560419-image-a-2_1546701020055.jpg

Alvaro Morata scored a brace to help holders Chelsea into the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest as Cesc Fabregas missed a penalty in what appears to be his final game for the club.

Maurizio Sarri named Ruben Loftus-Cheek in his starting line-up and made Fabregas captain for the day, but it was Morata and Callum Hudson-Odoi who impressed for the Blues as the pair combined for both goals at Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas had the chance to bow out with a goal before his rumoured move to Monaco, but had his first-half spot-kick saved. Morata struck twice inside 10 second-half minutes, aided by the impressive Hudson-Odoi, whose own future has been at the centre of intense speculation this week amid confirmed interest from Bayern Munich.

Loftus-Cheek was replaced after just 42 minutes as he struggled with a back injury on an afternoon of mixed fortunes for Chelsea's players on an individual level, while Sarri's men comfortably dispatched Aitor Karanka's well-organised Forest side.

Morata's struggle to find the net this season was summed up after 12 minutes when Davide Zappacosta's cross afforded him a free header from six yards out and the Spaniard headed straight at Luke Steele despite having the whole goal to aim at.

Morata appeared to be brought down by Claudio Yacob when the Forest defender was the last man only for the referee to wave Chelsea's appeals for a free-kick away, and, moments later, Yacob made a vital block to prevent Hudson-Odoi from opening the scoring.

When Loftus-Cheek was hacked down by Danny Fox on the half-hour mark, the moment looked made for Fabregas, but his staggered run-up to the penalty failed to fool Steele, who dived down to his right to push the ball around the post.

Hudson-Odoi showed why he is one of the Premier League's hottest talents when he burst down the right side of the penalty area four minutes into the second half and whipped in a cross that Morata met with an instinctive side-footed finish at the near post to give Chelsea the lead.

The teenage winger almost got one himself when he danced into the box only to see his shot blocked by a good low save by Steele. But he was unstoppable on the wing just before the hour when he sent a cross sailing to the far post where Morata looped a header beyond Steele to double Chelsea's lead and put the game beyond Forest, who were toothless in attack and showed no sign of mounting a comeback.

The afternoon's last notable moment saw Fabregas given a standing ovation as he left the field in the 85th minute, the Chelsea faithful rising to acknowledge a man who helped the club to two Premier League titles in a trophy-laden four-and-a-half years at the club.

Fabregas returned to the pitch after the full-time whistle and was visibly emotional as he paid tribute to the Chelsea fans.

Blackpool 0 Arsenal 3: Willock at the double as Gunners ease through

    8163962-6560625-image-a-71_1546711937799.jpg

A brace from teenager Joe Willock set up a 3-0 win for Arsenal at Blackpool in the third round of the FA Cup.

The game a Bloomfield Road ebbed and flowed pleasingly during the opening stages, despite the surreal atmosphere caused by vast numbers of Blackpool fans continuing to boycott games at Bloomfield Road in protest against controversial owner Owen Oyston.Willock found the breakthrough and the 19-year-old midfielder's second opportunistic strike in the 37th minute effectively ended the contest.

League One Blackpool continued to press forward gamely but Alex Iwobi completed the scoring eight minutes from time.
Eddie Nketiah wasted two glorious chances inside the opening eight minutes, shooting into the side netting before stretching to prod wide.

Blackpool striker Armand Gnanduillet sashayed around a backpedalling Stephan Lichsteiner to shoot at Petr Cech but the visitors claimed an 11th-minute breakthrough when Aaron Ramsey's deflected free-kick hit the post and fell for Willock to nod in.

There were suspicions of handball against Alex Iwobi when he controlled to combine superbly with Carl Jenkinson, whose low cross was touched on by Nketiah for Willock to finish.Cech's long punt found Nketiah, only for Mark Howard to save and compound the youngster's frustration.

Lichtsteiner was unable to cut out Marc Bola's 58th-minute cutback but fellow Blackpool full-back Michael Nottingham leant back to lift over.It was an increasingly lackadaisical showing from Arsenal in the second half and Paudie O'Connor rose unchallenged to head a corner wide.

An injury to Howard brought Blackpool substitute goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi into the fray and he was picking the ball out of the net with 10 minutes to play, although an offside flag denied Willock his hat-trick.Mafoumbi could only parry Ramsey's shot across goal and the linesman's flag stayed down as Iwobi poached Arsenal's third.

Emery targets 'committed' signings in January as Arsenal sweep past Blackpool

Unai Emery said he is in the market for players with “commitment” in January after watching his side beat Blackpool 3-0 to advance to the FA Cup fourth round. The Gunners swept past their League One hosts at Bloomfield Road on Saturday with two goals from teenager Joe Willock and one from Alex Iwobi.

Arsenal fans greatly outnumbered their Blackpool counterparts, with over 5,000 supporters making the long trip north from London, as Tangerines fans stayed away in their thousands in protest at the running of their club.

On a low-key night in Lancashire, Emery took the chance to blood some of the younger members of his squad, but emphasized the need for the club to look at bringing in new faces in January to shore up the squad as they look to break back into the Premier League’s top four.“I think the club is working for the possibility to take some players who can help us during these next four months,” said the Spaniard.

“Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre-back, but it is not easy because also [Konstantinos] Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position.“We need players with commitment. We need players who are prepared for when the team needs them and they can step up.”

As well as goalscorer Willock, Emery also gave a start to 19 year-old Eddie Nketiah and run-out from the bench to 17 year-old Bukayo Saka.London-born Nketiah already has two senior goals for Arsenal to his name having netted a brace when Arsene Wenger’s side beat Norwich in the Carabao Cup last season.

He made a total of five appearances for the Gunners last term and is expected to become a more frequent presence in the team in the coming seasons.“Opportunities are coming in matches like today. We mixed experienced players in the squad with some young players like Joe, Eddie and Ainsley [Maitland-Niles].“It was a good combination. They can show us they are progressing with the team and, mostly importantly, they showed their passion.”

'Everyone knows the situation' – Emotional Fabregas braced for Chelsea exit

Cesc Fabregas has stopped short of confirming his move away from Chelsea but admitted "everyone knows the situation", with Goal having revealed that he is closing in on a transfer to Monaco.

The World Cup-winning midfielder left the Stamford Bridge pitch in tears after the Blues' 2-0 FA Cup third round victory over Nottingham Forest, in which he captained the side but also missed a first-half penalty.

He was given a standing ovation when replaced by N'Golo Kante in the 85th minute and the Spaniard indicated in a post-match interview that reports of his imminent departure were true.

"The occasion got the better of me," Fabregas told BBC Sport."I didn't expect all of this to happen today. I can't say anything out of respect for Chelsea but everyone knows the situation."

Fabregas joined Chelsea in June 2014 in a €33 million (£30m/$38m) transfer from Barcelona and has won two Premier League titles with the club.

If his rumoured switch to Ligue 1 comes to fruition, Fabregas will wave farewell to English football for what could be the last time after a combined 12-and-a-half years, first at Arsenal and then Chelsea, either side of his three-year spell at Barcelona.

"Time flies," said the 31-year-old. "It feels like last week I started playing professionally, and now it has been over 15 years."For the young players, a little advice: enjoy every single second."You have to be ready every three days, live with criticism, with everyone saying how good you are, with up and downs, but time really does fly."

Ross Barkley, who played alongside Fabregas in midfield as Alvaro Morata's second-half goals ensured Chelsea's passage to the fourth round, paid tribute to his team-mate."As a young lad watching Match of the Day and seeing Cesc for Arsenal and Barcelona you can see what an intelligent player he is," Barkley told BBC Sport.

"I've seen how quick he thinks on the spot. It has been a pleasure playing with him, whatever move he chooses to make."He's played for Spain in the era when they won everything and he held his own with the likes of Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta."He's going to go down as one of best midfielders ever."

Chong salutes Solskjaer impact at Man Utd as he follows in Gomes' footsteps

Tahith Chong has hailed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for putting his faith in youth, with the Manchester United youngster delighted to have been handed a competitive debut.

The 19-year-old winger was given his senior Red Devils bow in an FA Cup third round clash with Reading. He was introduced off the bench during the second-half of that contest and impressed during an eye-catching cameo.

Chong is hoping that there will be many more outings to come, with fellow academy star Angel Gomes having already figured in the Premier League under interim manager Solskjaer.

The Dutch youngster told MUTV: “I have got to keep my feet on the ground and keep working hard, if my chances come I have just got to take them.“I think the manager he has done a brilliant job. I am not the first one, Angel has had a chance too.

“For the young boys coming through it is good to see. I think everyone at the youth level now can see those opportunities, everyone is working even harder now.”
Chong has been billed as a potential senior star at United for some time now.

He has showcased his undoubted ability at youth level and formed part of Jose Mourinho’s pre-season plans ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

A breakthrough has now been made and a hot prospect is eager to kick on from this point after getting a taste of life among the elite. He added on his first United outing: “Obviously it was a special moment. I couldn’t enjoy it more than I did.

“He [Solskjaer] just said enjoy it, get on the ball, try and get a few touches and just enjoy the game. Obviously I just tried to get into the game, get into the tempo.“I think it is a proud moment, I just felt proud. You work hard to get there, my family helped me so it was a proud moment just standing there. My parents came, so my mum and dad, so I am happy they could see it as well.”

United’s victory over Reading has maintained their faultless record under Solskjaer, with five successive wins have been savoured since Mourinho was shown to the exits at Old Trafford.

Valverde open to more January business for Barcelona a year on from landing Coutinho

Ernesto Valverde is open to the idea of Barcelona dipping back into the winter transfer market, but is not expecting much January movement at Camp Nou.This time last year, the Blaugrana were preparing to open their cheque book in order to complete two big-money deals.

Yerry Mina, who has since been moved on to Everton, was acquired for €11.8 million (£11m/$13m) while Philippe Coutinho was lured away from Liverpool in a €160m (£143m/$182m) agreement.

Barcelona added again over the summer of 2018, and find themselves back at the top of the Liga standings, but further recruits are possible over the coming weeks.

Quizzed on his plans for the January window, Valverde told reporters: “We are always open to improving but we will have to see if any players come in.“But, in principle, we are happy with what we have and I am focused on the players we have here.”

Barca are hoping that their ranks will soon be bolstered by the return from injury of World Cup-winning defender Samuel Umtiti.“We think that in a couple of weeks he might be able to start training again with the team, we’ll see how things are going,” Valverde said of the France international.“I always try to be optimistic and I would like that to happen. I think he has positive feelings. We’ll see.”

For now, Umtiti’s absence has been covered by the loan signing of Colombian centre-half Jeison Murillo from Valencia.

Valverde said of a man pushing to make his debut: “Our idea was that Jeison would be available as soon as possible and he knows the league.“He’s going to have to play and we hope to see the best of him.”Barcelona will return to La Liga action on Sunday against Getafe.

They will be hoping to preserve a three-point lead at the summit in that contest, with Valverde aware that challenges for the crown are likely to come from several rivals.Atletico Madrid are their closest challengers are present, with Sevilla and Alaves also flying high while Clasico foes Real Madrid are only seven points off the pace despite sitting fifth.

Valverde added on the Blancos: “We still consider Madrid a candidate for the title.
“Sometimes the gaps seem great but they are not so much, just two and a half games, and we see them as one of our rivals.“This year La Liga is tighter, everything is more compressed. But always it is better if we are first.”

Mexico hires former Atlanta United, Argentina coach Tata Martino for El Tri job

Mexico got its man, announcing on Monday it has hired Gerardo "Tata" Martino to manage the men’s national team. The length of the deal is yet to be announced, though the Mexican federation will be hoping the Argentine leads the team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and beyond.

Martino takes over a team that has been remarkably consistent in recent history. El Tri have qualified for the last seven World Cups and been eliminated at the round of 16 stage of each of them. That has set off a near-obsessive quest to make the ‘fifth game’, a quarterfinal, for the first time on foreign soil.

He’ll first be tasked with re-establishing regional supremacy. Mexico’s strongest team was at the Confederations Cup in 2017 but an alternate team failed to win the Gold Cup. Martino will have Mexico’s best at his disposal for this summer’s Gold Cup.

That includes an exciting new generation of players, led by PSV star Hirving Lozano, who are taking over from a generation of stars that won the U-20 World Cup and Olympic gold but were unable to turn those youth trophies into major achievements on the senior national team level.

The El Tri job had been vacant since Juan Carlos Osorio declined a contract extension after the 2018 World Cup, leaving to eventually take over the Paraguay national team. It was with that same Paraguay team that Martino first made his name in international soccer.

Now 56, Martino was hired as Paraguay manager in 2007 after winning four titles in the country’s domestic league - three at Libertad and one at Cerro Porteno. He led the Albirroja to their best-ever finish at the World Cup, making the quarterfinals in 2010.

After announcing his intentions to step down, Martino instead was convinced to stay on and guided Paraguay to a runner-up finish in the 2011 Copa America - albeit without winning a single match in regulation after three group stage draws and a pair of penalty shootout wins in the knockout stage.

He later went on to manage Newell’s Old Boys, the club where spent his youth and later suited up nearly 500 times as a midfielder for the first team. After winning the 2013 title with the club, he made the jump across the Atlantic Ocean to replace Tito Vilanova as Barcelona manager.

His tenure there lasted just a year, with Barca falling short of the La Liga title by a point and finishing as runner-up of the Copa del Rey. Yet, he impressed enough for Argentina to bring him on after the 2014 World Cup. He took his home nation to the final of back-to-back tournaments but fell to Chile in both the 2015 Copa America and the 2016 Copa America Centenario. He stepped down after the latter final, ending his Argentina career with only those defeats, a pair of friendly losses in 2014 and a defeat to Ecuador in World Cup qualification

He signed on with MLS expansion side Atlanta United and took just two seasons to win MLS Cup and break his streak of bad luck in finals.

While the team faltered on the final day of the regular season and missed out on the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the most points at the end of the regular season, it rolled through the playoffs with a 4-1 aggregate victory in the Eastern Conference semifinals, a 3-1 win the conference finals and a 2-0 triumph over the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup final.

His debut as Mexico manager will come in a March 22 friendly match against Chile in San Diego with a contest against Osorio’s Paraguay four days later in Northern California.

Chelsea face Serie A competition in battle to sign £45m-rated Barella

Chelsea are interested in £45 million ($57.5m)-rated Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella, but Goal understands they face competition from Serie A giants Napoli and Inter.Barella, 21, is regarded as an outstanding talent among his generation in Italy but is reluctant to move in January as his stock continues to rise in Serie A.

Napoli and Inter are willing to wait until June before entering the market for Barella, so it would take a persuasive offer from Chelsea to change his mind and lure him to the Premier League during the January window.

He has previously been compared to Steven Gerrard, and should he sign then he would compete with the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley for a starting berth under Maurzio Sarri.Chelsea would not see Barella as a direct replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who has been granted leave and flown to Monaco to complete his move to the Ligue 1 strugglers.

Fabregas received an emotional send-off towards the end of Chelsea's 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday having made 198 appearances for the west London outfit. He will now reunite with former Arsenal team-mate and current Monaco manager Thierry Henry as he looks to help the 2016-17 champions navigate themselves to safety during the second half of the campaign.

Chelsea could look to sign a more direct replacement for Fabregas, as well as keeping Barella on their radar, as Sarri prepares to lose his back-up option for Jorginho.

Either way it is clear the former Napoli boss wishes to bolster his midfield before the window shuts at the end of the month."I don't want to speak about players of other teams, of course," Sarri told reporters ahead of Tuesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham.

"If Cesc goes, of course, we will need a replacement. Now with the midfielders we are in trouble I think."I don't know the [injury] situation of Loftus-Cheek, if it is serious or not. Without Cesc we have only five [midfielders] so we are in trouble. We need a replacement."

Chelsea are also on the hunt for a new striker during the window, with Alvaro Morata moving towards the exit door after his agent held talks with Sevilla regarding a loan move until the end of the season.

Sevilla hold Morata talks as they eye loan move for Chelsea striker

Sevilla have held preliminary talks with the agent of Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata as they look to sign the Spain international on loan until the end of the season.

Goal understands that Morata's representative, Juanma Lopez, met with the Liga club recently in a bid to earn his client a move back to his homeland.Sevilla are willing to pay the entirety of Morata's £140,000-a-week wages to bring him to Andalusia as they aim to continue their unlikely title bid.

Pablo Machin's side currently sit third in the Liga table, seven points behind leaders Barcelona, and remain in contention to win a fourth Europa League title in six seasons.

Chelsea are unwilling to let him leave Stamford Bridge unless they can secure a replacement themselves during the January window.Morata signed for the Blues from Real Madrid in a deal worth an initial £58 million in the summer of 2017, but the 25-year-old has struggled for consistency in front of goal.

In total he has scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for the west London outfit - nine of those goals coming this season - with his place in Maurizio Sarri's side far from assured.

Eden Hazard has been prefered to him in recent weeks as Sarri introduced a false nine into his formation while Olivier Giroud has also provided competition for Morata over the last 12 months.

And his lack of celebration after scoring two goals against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Saturday has seen some suggest he would rather be anywhere else than Chelsea."I don't know [if he is happy]," Sarri said on Tuesday ahead of his side's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham. "I hope so but I don't know.

"It is more important to score than celebrate. He scored two goals in the last match, in the season he has nine."In his best season at Madrid he scored 20 goals, so he will be able to have a very good second part of the season and he will try to reach his best."

Quite where Morata would fit into the pecking order at Sevilla is unknown, with Wissam Ben Yedder and Andre Silva having netted 24 goals between them in all competitions this season.

The latter's form, however, has dropped off in recent weeks after a fast start following his loan arrival from AC Milan, and with Luis Muriel having left for Fiorentina already in the winter window, Morata could yet earn a starting berth should he move to the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Chelsea's search for a replacement will not see them resurrect their interest in Milan's Gonzalo Higuain, with the Blues deciding against pursuing the deal after it was deemed too complicated by the club's hierarchy.

Bournemouth's top scorer Callum Wilson is an option , though the Cherries are understood to be standing firm in not selling the England international. And with more than three weeks of the window still left and a number of possibilities still to emerge, Morata could yet be made to wait before finding out his fate over the next month.

Real Madrid 0 Real Sociedad 2: Ten-man Los Blancos drop points again

    8220856-6564825-image-a-18_1546858904511.jpg

Real Madrid dropped points for the second LaLiga match in succession as they slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat at home to struggling Real Sociedad on Sunday, seeing Lucas Vazquez sent off in the process.

Santiago Solari's men were looking to make the most of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla drawing earlier in the day but could now end the weekend 10 points adrift of Barcelona.Madrid were behind early on as Willian Jose converted a third-minute penalty and the home side were unable to pull level before half-time.

Despite Vazquez's red card for two bookings, Madrid remained well on top after the interval and should have had a penalty when goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli seemed to trip Vinicius Jr, but La Real escaped on that occasion and struck again through Ruben Pardo late on to end a run of four consecutive league defeats.Madrid found themselves with an uphill task as Willian Jose emphatically dispatched his spot-kick following Casemiro's clumsily foul on Mikel Merino.

The hosts created several chances in response – Karim Benzema just missing the bottom-right corner from close range in the 11th minute, shortly before Rulli denied Vinicius from a tight angle.

Luka Modric then forced Rulli into a smart stop down to his right from distance but they came closest just prior to the break – Vazquez's chipped cross-cum-shot coming back off the post.

Madrid turned things up a notch after the break, only for Vazquez to collect a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Merino.Soon afterwards, Vinicius was unlucky to not be given a penalty when he appeared to be fouled by the sprawling Rulli.

La Real took full advantage, hitting Madrid on the break six minutes from the end and Pardo - a second-half introduction - nodded in Willian Jose's cross to leave Madrid beaten.

Getafe 1 Barcelona 2: Valverde's men go five points clear as Messi and Suarez strike

    8193378-6563127-image-a-1_1546820894454.jpg

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored sublime goals as Barcelona beat Getafe 2-1 in a bruising encounter and moved five points clear at the top of LaLiga.Messi took the initiative on 20 minutes with a trademark moment of brilliance and Suarez plundered a superb volley to double Barca's lead.

Getafe quickly responded with a goal from Jaime Mata but, for all their craft and physicality, they could not claw their way back onto level terms.

With Atletico Madrid and Sevilla having played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day, the result puts Barcelona well and truly in the driving seat at the halfway point in the season as head coach Ernesto Valverde ended a week of speculation over his future with a satisfying, hard-fought victory.
Dimitri Foulquier had the ball in the net inside the opening nine minutes only for the referee to award a free-kick to Barcelona for a foul on Clement Lenglet.Barca midfielder Arthur was lucky not to see red for an elbow on Angel Rodriguez before Messi broke the deadlock with a masterclass in quick thinking. The Argentina ace nutmegged goalkeeper David Soria with his first touch before slotting the ball into the empty net from an acute angle with his second.

Suarez then doubled the lead with an exquisite volley from the edge of the box that sent the ball screaming to the right of a helpless Soria.Getafe pulled themselves back into the game on the stroke of half-time when Mata bundled into an unguarded net after Rodriguez flashed the ball across the face of goal.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a superb save to deny Leandro Cabrera with an hour gone, pushing the centre-back's thunderous header over the crossbar.Mata then got in behind the Barcelona defence with the ball and rounded Ter Stegen but somehow blazed his shot over the crossbar from 10 yards.

Messi had a chance to score his second of the night and his 400th LaLiga goal when he burst through on goal with 15 minutes left but his shot was too close to Soria, who saved to tee up a tense finish that saw Barcelona hold on.

:yes:‘The Theatre of Dreams has its entertainers back’ – Solskjaer’s Man Utd excite Hargreaves

Manchester United are an exciting prospect again under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, says Owen Hargreaves, with “the Theatre of Dreams having its entertainers back”.
Old Trafford was a far from happy place early on in the season as Jose Mourinho struggled to bring the best out of a star-studded squad.

He was eventually relieved of his duties following a humbling 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, with former favourite Solskjaer appointed in his place on a short-term deal to the end of the season.

The 1999 Treble winner has opened his reign with five successive victories, matching Matt Busby’s efforts from 73 years ago in the process, and has rebuilt belief and confidence in the United squad.Former Red Devils star Hargreaves believes, with the fans back on side and key men such as Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford rediscovering their form, that good times lie ahead.

He told BT Sport: "I think everybody expected that their form would improve.
"I think the manner in which Manchester United are applying themselves, that is what is exciting everybody."Everybody around Old Trafford has a smile on their face, even when you come into the car park.

"So, I think the style is back, the Theatre of Dreams has its entertainers back and I think it's exciting times."I think Manchester United can start building to find a way to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool because they are the front runners right now."

While United have got their season back on track, there is still much work for them to do.Mourinho left the club well short of the Premier League’s top four and Solskjaer is looking to bridge that gap.

There are now just six points separating the Red Devils from the Champions League spots, while they are also through to the fourth round of the FA Cup and have an eagerly-anticipated two-legged European clash with Paris Saint-Germain to come in February.

Real Madrid confirm £15m Brahim Diaz deal as teenager leaves Manchester City

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of midfielder Brahim Diaz from Manchester City on a six-and-a-half year contract.

Brahim moves to Spain in a deal worth at least £15 million ($19m) plus £6.5m in add-ons, Goal understands.Reports suggest Brahim has agreed a £60,000-a-week contract with the European champions, who have, crucially, guaranteed him a spot in the senior squad.

The 19-year-old decided to leave City as he believes he has not been given enough first-team opportunities.

The Premier League champions made a series of lucrative offers to keep the young forward, who had entered the final six months of his contract, but he has been convinced that he will get more playing time in Spanish capital.Brahim is to undergo a medical on Monday before being officially presented as a Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Goal revealed earlier this week that Manchester City have agreed a clause with Madrid that entitles them to 15 per cent of any future transfer fee, should the forward sign for another club in the future.City have also included an agreement whereby they would receive 40% of any future transfer fee if Brahim were to join Manchester United.

Brahim joined City as a 14-year-old and was highly regarded by the club’s academy staff. The youngster was seen as one of their brightest prospects and tipped to break into the first-team at Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder made his first-team debut against Swansea in the EFL Cup in 2016 but has struggled to break into the senior side on a regular basis. He has made 14 senior appearances in two years since, but three of those were starts.

Despite his lack of senior action City boss Pep Guardiola was keen to keep hold of the player and the club made several lucrative offers to retain his services, but were unable to convince him that he will play more in first-team football than he will in Madrid.

Brahim could make his Real debut in the Copa del Rey clash with Leganes next Wednesday.Santiago Solari's side are currently fifth in La Liga and 10 points behind leaders Barcelona following a 2-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Wolves 2 Liverpool 1: Jimenez and Neves down much-changed Reds

    8240912-0-image-m-37_1546895077306.jpg

Ruben Neves' superb strike gave Wolves a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup third round – making it back-to-back defeats for the Premier League leaders.Jurgen Klopp made nine changes to the XI that lost by the same scoreline to title rivals Manchester City last Thursday and they turned in a lethargic first-half display, trailing at the break to Raul Jimenez's opener.

Divock Origi found a fine equaliser but Portugal midfielder Neves raised the decibel levels significantly at Molineux with a decisive 55th-minute long ranger.

One of the players Klopp retained from the City defeat, Croatia centre-back Dejan Lovren, pulled up and had to be replaced in the sixth minute, meaning 16-year-old Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever became Liverpool's youngest player in FA Cup historyIt was a couple of senior men who let their manager down in the 38th minute when Diogo Jota stole possession from James Milner and burst past Fabinho.Jota played in Jimenez, who still had plenty to do but bore down on goal and steered an unerring finish beyond Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool pulled level six minutes into the second half when the hitherto anonymous Origi engineered a fraction of space on the edge of the box to smash home left footed.Parity did not last long as Neves found an even better finish by launching a typically dipping and swerving effort from 30 yards.

Jimenez had the chance to move Wolves closer to round four when he picked Hoever's pocket but could not adjust his feet after going around Mignolet. The run of spectacular second-half strikes continued as a sumptuous free-kick from Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri hit the inside of the right post and somehow bounced to safety.

Klopp then called for the big guns, sending on Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, but Wolves held on.

Real Madrid star Kroos sidelined by adductor tear

Toni Kroos will miss a series of Real Madrid's forthcoming matches with a grade two adductor tear, the Liga giants have confirmed.

The Germany midfielder was substituted 10 minutes from time in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu, a result that left Santiago Solari's side fifth in Spain's top flight.A statement on the club's official website reads: "Following tests carried out on our player Toni Kroos today by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a grade two tear of the adductor muscle in his left leg. His recovery will be monitored."

Madrid did not specify an expected return date for Kroos but his grade two tear is likely to mean an absence of anywhere between three to six weeks to heal completely.

Indeed, Los Blancos could count themselves lucky, as grade three tears can sideline players for over three months. That means the 29-year-old will miss both legs of the Copa del Rey last-16 tie against Leganes – the opening match of which comes on Wednesday – and the league games against Real Betis and Sevilla at the very least.

Madrid close out January with a trip to Espanyol before entertaining Deportivo Alaves. The February 9 derby at Atletico Madrid is followed by a trip to Ajax in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Kroos' absence adds to a considerable injury headache for Solari, who is currently without Gareth Bale (calf), Mariano (sciatica), Marco Asensio and Marcos Llorente (both hamstring).
