Schmeichel calls for Solskjaer stay at Man Utd while hinting at Old Trafford return of his own

Peter Schmeichel considers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be the “top candidate” to become Manchester United’s permanent manager and admits he would be interested in making his own return to the club in a director of football post. The Red Devils turned to one familiar face for inspiration back in December after taking the decision to part with Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer, as a Treble winner from his playing days, was welcomed back to Old Trafford with open arms and has made a stunning impact since taking the reins – collecting 12 wins from 15 games.

He has lifted United back into top-four contention and through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, with many now considering it to be merely a matter of time before an interim agreement is turned into a full-time contract.Former team-mate Schmeichel expects that decision to be made, telling PA Sport: "He must be top candidate now.

"I think with Ole it is kind of a free ride because he's only there on a temporary basis, but he's proven - and the Liverpool game was key for me - that his way of thinking, he's a top, top, top manager.

"I mean, we were trying to think about a game where three, actually four, players get injured in the first 25 minutes and you have to regroup."I can't remember anyone ever being faced with that challenge and I thought he came out of that smelling of roses."

Schmeichel added on Solskjaer’s return to United: "I didn't even see the announcement of Ole coming - it was a really big surprise that they picked him."I thought they'd go somewhere else. You know, some of the former players who have had bigger clubs - who have been at the club but are from different, other parts of Europe.

"It was kind of a clever move because Ole's worked with [Paul] Pogba, he's worked with [Jesse] Lingard when they were in the reserves and they have huge respect for Ole. Everyone has huge respect for Ole."His potential as a coach was very, very [clear] early on. It was very clear he would be a very good coach."

Inter & AC Milan to do battle for Lazio star Milinkovic-Savic

Inter and AC Milan are preparing to do battle for Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic when the summer transfer window opens, Goal understands. The Serbia international has long been linked with a switch to some of Europe's top clubs, including Manchester United, but the two Milan giants are hoping to steal a march in the race to land the 24-year-old.

Milan pushed to sign Milinkovic-Savic in 2018 and will require Lazio to drop their asking price from what had been around €100m (£86m/$114m) if they are to sign the midfielder.

Gennaro Gattuso's side would also need to qualify for the 2019-20 Champions League to be able to attract Milinkovic-Savic, which, as it stands, they're currently achieving as they lie fourth place in the Serie A table.

Inter are also interested in signing the Serbia international, while Juventus could be another of Italy's big guns to join the race for his signature.Goal understands the player harbours doubts about moving to the Serie A champions, however, feeling that he could find himself in and out of the team in what is a supremely talented squad of players.

Indeed, Juve already possess the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedria, Emre Can, Blaise Matuidi and Rodrigo Bentancur that play in that area of the pitch, while Aaron Ramsey will also be joining in the summer from Arsenal.

Interest from abroad has been mooted in the past, with Manchester United and Real Madrid having reportedly been in for Milinkovic-Savic in the summer.

Interest from abroad has been mooted in the past, with Manchester United and Real Madrid having reportedly been in for Milinkovic-Savic in the summer.

The midfielder's numbers in the current campaign are in stark contrast, with Milinkovic-Savic having scored four goals in all competitions up to now, while he has just one league assist to his name.

Lazio supporters have not been impressed with his performances in 2018-19 either, with Lazio fans, prior to a Serie A clash with Fiorentina earlier in the season, having unfurled a banner which read, "Milinkovic and Luis Alberto [are] fake talents only hunting cash!"

Lazio renewed their star man's contract until 2023 back in October, although that is unlikely to stop them selling should a big club come up with a tempting offer, especially considering his current standing with the fans.

:love:Manchester United 3 Southampton 2: Lukaku seals thrilling comeback

    10494578-6763915-image-m-56_1551545837916.jpg

Two goals from Romelu Lukaku secured a thrilling 3-2 win for Manchester United over Southampton that lifts them back into the Premier League's top four.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side looked to be heading for a fourth home game in a row without a win in all competitions after James Ward-Prowse converted a superb free-kick. United, who lost Alexis Sanchez to injury, had overturned Yan Valery's opener through Andreas Pereira and Lukaku only to see the lead slip away.

But Lukaku's emphatic finish in the 88th minute was enough for all three points, even though Paul Pogba missed an injury-time penalty.Lukaku was twice denied by Angus Gunn in the first five minutes, although United's early rhythm was disrupted by treatment on a Scott McTominay head injury.Jannik Vestergaard headed over when picked out unmarked from a corner, and Ryan Bertrand was angry not to win a penalty from a shirt pull by Chris Smalling.

Saints' increasing pressure told 26 minutes in, when Valery's ferocious strike from 25 yards beat David de Gea at his left-hand post, even though he got hands to the ball.United were struggling to impose themselves and suffered a further blow when Sanchez had to go off with a knee injury seven minutes after the restart.

However, they turned the scoreline around in a spectacular six-minute spell. First, Pereira curled a spectacular strike beyond Gunn from 25 yards out, before Lukaku got free in the box, cut onto his right foot and drilled a shot into the bottom-right corner.

Just as United appeared to be heading for victory, Ward-Prowse sent an unstoppable effort beyond De Gea to send the travelling fans into raptures and silence the home fans.

But with two minutes of normal time remaining, Lukaku curled another low right-foot strike from outside the box past Gunn, prompting further cries of 'Ole, Ole, Ole' from the Stretford End, which were only slightly dampened when Gunn kicked away Pogba's penalty.

Tottenham 1 Arsenal 1: Lloris' late penalty save gives Spurs welcome relief

    10491068-6763713-image-a-75_1551536886947.jpg

Hugo Lloris kept out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's stoppage-time penalty as Tottenham rescued a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in a dramatic north London derby on Saturday. The Gunners had led through Aaron Ramsey's early goal and may have felt aggrieved to have been pegged back 16 minutes from the end via Harry Kane's penalty, the England forward becoming the all-time leading scorer in Premier League matches between these two sides.

Kane appeared to be offside from Christian Eriksen's free-kick before he was bundled over by Shkodran Mustafi, but the Gunners had a golden chance to restore their advantage in the first minute of time added on after Aubameyang went down easily under contact from Davinson Sanchez.

Yet Lloris, who was involved in a bizarre Kieran Trippier own goal in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea, kept out Aubameyang's weak effort low to his right before Jan Vertonghen denied the Gabon striker right on the line as Arsenal tried to capitalise on the rebound.

A disappointing conclusion for the visitors was made worse when Lucas Torreira received a straight red card for a high challenge on Danny Rose, as Spurs were able to salvage a point after back-to-back losses over the past week.

Alexandre Lacazette was one of five changes from Arsenal's midweek thrashing of Bournemouth and he ought to have done better than scuff an ugly effort wide from Alex Iwobi's deflected pass in the second minute.Unai Emery's men were not forced to rue that miss, however, as Sanchez made a dreadful mess of a header near halfway and Lacazette released Ramsey to run clear, round Lloris and slot home.

The Gunners went close to a second shortly before the interval as Lloris palmed away Iwobi's curling effort – a save that was swiftly outdone by opposite number Bernd Leno, who denied Eriksen at point-blank range and then reacted superbly to tip Moussa Sissoko's follow-up over the bar.As in the first half, Lacazette wasted a glorious chance early in the second, skewing horribly wide when picked out by Nacho Monreal's cut-back. The despondent Frenchman was swiftly replaced by Aubameyang.

Rose was thwarted at close quarters as Leno spread himself well once more but the goalkeeper was sent the wrong way by Kane five minutes later, the England forward keeping his cool after the linesman had failed to spot him straying beyond the last man in the build-up to the penalty award.

The drama and controversy did not end there, however, as Aubameyang was denied by Lloris and Vertonghen before Torreira was dismissed for a rash studs-up tackle on Rose.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1 Bayern Munich 5: Kovac's side pull level with Dortmund at summit

    wire-10499556-1551559635-890_634x737.jpg

Bayern Munich pulled level on points with Borussia Dortmund at the Bundesliga summit after thumping Borussia Monchengladbach 5-1 on Saturday.Long-time leaders Dortmund had opened the door for Niko Kovac's side after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Augsburg on Friday and the reigning champions never looked in danger of failing to take advantage as they swatted aside their hosts, who now sit fourth.

Javi Martinez gave them a second-minute lead before Thomas Muller's fifth league goal of the campaign extended their lead nine minutes later.

Lars Stindl pulled one back for the hosts in the 37th minute, but Robert Lewandowski's glorious finish shortly after the restart extinguished any hopes of a comeback as Bayern – who added two more late on through Serge Gnabry and a Lewandowski penalty – cruised to an 11th win in their last 12 Bundesliga games.
Bayern started in devastating fashion, taking the lead inside two minutes.
Lewandowski's low strike was tipped around the post by Yann Sommer after just 30 seconds, but from the resulting corner Martinez headed into the roof of the net for his second league goal of the campaign.

Bayern's superb start got even better after 11 minutes, Muller turning in from close range after Sommer had kept out his initial effort. The Monchengladbach goalkeeper then denied Lewandowski and Gnabry before Stindl clawed the hosts back into it eight minutes before the interval, the captain fizzing past Manuel Neuer from 15 yards.

Bayern started the second period in similar fashion to the first and restored their two-goal advantage in the 47th minute, Lewandowski collecting Thiago Alcantara's pass, swivelling superbly and clipping a fine finish past Sommer.

Gnabry added a fourth from close range in the 75th minute and Lewandowski scored from the spot in stoppage time after Joshua Kimmich had been tripped in the area to add gloss to a scoreline that sends an emphatic message to their title rivals, who now lead only on goal difference.

AC Milan 1 Sassuolo 0: Rossoneri capitalise on Lirola own goal and Consigli red

AC Milan were aided by Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli's howler as the Rossoneri moved above city rivals Inter and into third place in Serie A thanks to Saturday's 1-0 victory.

Riding an eight-match unbeaten run across all competitions ahead of this encounter at San Siro, Milan had been further boosted on Friday by their neighbours' surprise 2-1 defeat at Cagliari.

And Gennaro Gattuso's side took full advantage as Sassuolo contributed to their own downfall, Pol Lirola putting through his own net before, midway through the second half, Consigli came out of his area but misjudged the flight of a long ball and hauled down Krzysztof Piatek.

Consigli was shown a straight red card, which effectively ended the visitors' hopes of a comeback as Milan consolidated their position within the Champions League qualification places thanks to a fourth straight league triumph.Despite having little to play for, mid-table Sassuolo posed plenty of problems and were the first to threaten, Gianluigi Donnarumma making a fine save to deny Filip Djuricic's glancing touch at the near post.

But it was the hosts who forged ahead 10 minutes prior to the interval as Suso's right-wing corner took a flick off Manuel Locatelli and, with Mateo Musacchio and Piatek in close attention, deflected in off the unfortunate Lirola.Jeremie Boga curled an effort off the right-hand post as Sassuolo sought a response and the forward did find the net with a fine finish shortly before the break only to see the goal correctly disallowed for offside.

Consigli's moment of madness arrived in the 64th minute, the keeper seeing Franck Kessie's long pass bounce over his head before he instinctively reached out to grab Piatek's left shoulder.

Sassuolo brought on back-up Gianluca Pegolo, who saved smartly from Hakan Calhanoglu soon afterwards and Milan comfortably held on in the closing stages to leapfrog Inter.

Wolves 2 Cardiff City 0: Jota & Jimenez see off struggling Bluebirds

Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez scored twice in the space of 134 first-half seconds as Wolves eased to a 2-0 home Premier League victory over Cardiff City.

Wolves' win was a first in four top-flight games and tightened their grip on seventh place in the table. The result was never in doubt after Jimenez scored his 11th league goal of the season in the 18th minute to double his side's advantage on Saturday.

Cardiff, who stay in the relegation zone, have now lost three consecutive matches, conceding 10 goals in the process.

John Ruddy, making a first top-flight appearance since May 2016 as Wolves gave him game-time ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final with Manchester United, had an early scare in gathering Aron Gunnarsson's effort at the second attempt after initially fumbling.

But it was Wolves who struck twice in quick succession to seize full control. In the 16th minute, a magnificent passing move was finished off by Jota from 10 yards after the eventual goalscorer, Jimenez and Morgan Gibbs-White were all involved in the build-up.

Sol Bamba was to blame for the hosts' second, losing possession to Jimenez in a dangerous area, the striker then seeing his improvised cross played back to him by Jota before completing a simple finish.

With Cardiff in disarray, Leander Dendoncker had time to hit the post and force a fine save from Neil Etheridge, while Bamba had to leave the pitch on a stretcher before the break.Wolves, who replaced Jota almost immediately after the restart, should have extended their lead when Etheridge superbly denied Ruben Vinagre, after the wing-back opted to shoot instead of play in Adama Traore.

A third goal proved elusive with the impressive Etheridge superbly keeping out Jimenez late on, but it mattered little with Ruddy not having a second-half save to make until the 87th minute.

Burnley 1 Crystal Palace 3: Batshuayi and Zaha keep Eagles flying

Wilfried Zaha starred and Michy Batshuayi scored again as Crystal Palace maintained their fine Premier League form with a comfortable 3-1 victory at Burnley.

Palace won their last away league game 4-1 at Leicester City and they triumphed easily at a windy Turf Moor on Saturday, moving eight points clear of the relegation zone as a result.

Phil Bardsley's unfortunate early own goal gave the visitors the advantage and Batshuayi then hit his second Premier League goal since joining on loan from Chelsea in January.

Zaha helped to create both goals and he got his own name on the scoresheet with a superb solo strike in the 76th minute to ensure Palace continue to look up the Premier League table, although Ashley Barnes hit a late consolation for Burnley.Palace took the lead in the 15th minute, Bardsley turning the ball into his own goal after Jeffrey Schlupp fired a Zaha cross back into the danger zone.

Chris Wood scored an early winner in this fixture last season and almost replied quickly, hitting the chest of goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey after linking with strike partner Barnes.Batshuayi doubled Palace's advantage in the 48th minute. Zaha was involved again and a superb driven cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka was smashed home by the striker.

Scott Dann's brilliant block denied Barnes a reply for Burnley before Schlupp went close with a long-range effort, with Batshuayi's poor touch meaning he failed to capitalise on a Ben Mee error.

Any slim hopes of a comeback were seemingly extinguished in fine style as Mee and Charlie Taylor were turned inside out by Zaha before the Ivory Coast international rifled home a wonderful finish.

Barnes netted for the fifth time in six Premier League games to complete the scoring, nodding in Ashley Westwood's cross, with Hennessey making a fingertip save to deny substitute Peter Crouch in added time as Burnley belatedly battled back.

Bournemouth 0 Manchester City 1: Match-winner Mahrez lifts gloom for stricken De Bruyne

    10493636-6763813-image-a-61_1551543668837.jpg

Riyad Mahrez scored decisively to sink Bournemouth but Manchester City's second consecutive 1-0 win in the Premier League came at a cost.

City are back at the top of the table, with Liverpool needing to address a two-point deficit in Sunday's Merseyside derby at Everton after Mahrez snuck in his 11th goal of the season 10 minutes into the second half at the Vitality Stadium..Yet the Algeria winger was only on the field because Kevin De Bruyne suffered the latest setback of an injury-ruined season.

Eddie Howe's hosts remain 12th after a far more robust showing than in their 5-1 loss at Arsenal in midweek, but they offered little attacking threat from their disciplined 5-4-1 setup.David Silva shot wastefully wide from De Bruyne's 19th-minute cross, although the Belgium midfielder's half would end in dejection.

An audacious overhead kick from centre-back Nicolas Otamendi was the next closest City came to finding an opener before the interval – demonstrating how effectively Bournemouth restricted opponents who enjoyed 83 per cent possession in the opening 45 minutes.

The injury woes continued early in the second period for Guardiola, with John Stones lasting 47 minutes on his return before making way for Vincent Kompany and icing his thigh on the bench.Mahrez eased frustrations of another kind in the away dugout when he drilled a shot under Artur Boruc after Silva worked possession into his path.

Raheem Sterling came close to scoring in a seventh consecutive match against Bournemouth but drove into the side netting in the 64th minute. The England winger then turned provider as Boruc held a stabbed shot from Sergio Aguero, who later rattled the bar with a speculative strike.

Bournemouth's goalkeeper hared out to deny Sterling inside the final quarter of an hour before preventing the match-winner Mahrez from heading his second.
