'I think the contract is expired' - Solskjaer free to take permanent Man Utd job

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be free to take the permanent Manchester United job after suggesting his contract at Molde has now expired.Solskjaer was still in charge of the Norwegian side when he was appointed interim Red Devils boss following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.

The 46-year-old was expected to return to Molde at the end of the Premier League season, with his assistant coach Erling Moe taking charge of the Molde first-team for the start of the 2019 Norwegian Eliteserien.

The only disappointment was a 2-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League last-16.They take on the French champions at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday with Solskjaer still confident of overturning their first-leg deficit.

Should United complete a remarkable comeback then would be hard for the club to resist those calls to appoint Solskjaer on a full-time basis, a process which could be a lot more straight forward than it otherwise might have been.

'I didn't come here to quit' - Solari refuses to offer Madrid resignation

Santiago Solari says he has no plans on walking away from Real Madrid despite their historical Champions League exit. The Argentine coach, who took over after the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui earlier the season, has suffered through four straight home defeats.

In the processes Madrid have lost all hopes at trophies for the season, having been knocked out of the Cope del Rey by Barcelona, fallen 12-points back of their eternal rivals in the Liga table and lost out at first knockout stage in the Champions League to Dutch side Ajax following a shocking 4-1 result at home in the second leg.

That is more than enough to see the pressure mount on any Madrid boss, but Solari says he has no plans to walk away despite all of the high hopes of the season being lost."I didn't come here to give up," he told a post-match press conference.Defender Dani Carvajal had earlier claimed that the season was effectively over and that it had been a “sh*t” campaign for the club.

But Solari was not willing to chastise his full-back even as he tried to keep hope alive for a late push to chase down Barcelona in the league table."Carvajal has a lot of character, he was speaking in the heat of the moment on the side of the pitch,” he said of the comments.

“The season goes on, we've still got La Liga."Solari also called for his side to “show bravery” as the club faces one of their most challenging times in recent memory.

"The season is difficult, but we are here to show our heart and character in difficult moments,” he said. “Easy moments are easy for everyone, you can climb up and surf them, but difficult moments you have to show bravery."

Before Tuesday, Madrid had only fallen to four straight home losses on two other occasions in the club’s history, and the loss to Ajax is the joint-heaviest the club has ever suffered at home in European competition.

If there is to be a turnaround of any sort it will need to come quickly, with trip to face Real Valladolid in the league slated for Sunday.

'Harry Kane is a beast' - Burki hails Tottenham striker after Champions League loss

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki has called Harry Kane "a beast" after he scored to help Tottenham knock the German side out of the Champions League on Tuesday.Kane netted in the 48th minute as Spurs registered a 1-0 win in Dortmund and cruised to a 4-0 aggregate victory to secure their passage to the quarter-finals.

The striker did not feature in the first leg due to ankle ligament damage that he suffered against Manchester United in January, but he has now scored three goals in four appearances since his return to the pitch.

Speaking after the game, Burki said: "We knew it will be really difficult because of the loss in the first leg. Tottenham waited for their chance and with Harry Kane up front you can do that.

"You know he will score and it was like that. It was unlucky for us, but we played very well, especially in the first half. We need to take the positive things out of this game for the Bundesliga."I think if we would have scored one goal in London the situation would have been completely different. In the end that is football.

"They had one chance and scored, we had five or six chances and didn’t score.
"Harry Kane is a beast. A player every team would love to have."Winger Marius Wolf was also pained to see his side give away a goal to Spurs after a strong first half.

"We had six very, very good scoring chances in the first half, unfortunately we did not use them," he said."We have to face that today. To concede the 1-0 so shortly after the half is of course bitter and crucial."

Kane registered 30 goals in the Premier League last term, only to be beaten by Mohamed Salah's 32, and won the Golden Boot at the World Cup in Russia.

This season, he has 16 league goals to his name and five in the Champions League - which puts him three behind top scorer Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich who will face Liverpool next week. His goal on Tuesday also made him Tottenham's all-time leading scorer in Europe.

It was an important victory for Spurs after they lost touch with Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League due to a string of bad results in recent weeks, and manager Mauricio Pochettino said the club should be proud of their place in the quarter-finals.

    :love:Paris Saint-Germain 1 Manchester United 3 (3-3 agg): Last-gasp Rashford penalty secures historic comeback

    10670820-6779099-image-a-61_1551909415948.jpg

Manchester United made Champions League history as Marcus Rashford's last-gasp penalty secured a 3-1 win away to Paris Saint-Germain, sending the English side through on away goals after a 2-0 loss in the first leg.

No side had ever progressed in a knockout match in Europe's elite competition after losing a home first leg by two or more goals, but United did the unthinkable, Rashford adding to Romelu Lukaku's brace after VAR drama.Although PSG controlled the first half, seeing 76 per cent of the ball, Thilo Kehrer and Gianluigi Buffon were guilty of gifting the in-form Lukaku two goals either side of Juan Bernat's equaliser, meaning United led at the break.

PSG looked as though they had done enough, but with the use of technology, Presnel Kimpembe was penalised for handball and Rashford emphatically dispatched the opportunity, seeing the Ligue 1 team eliminated at the last-16 stage for a third year in succession.
A poor Kehrer pass in behind Thiago Silva gifted United the early boost they needed, as it released Lukaku and he duly slotted home after skipping past Buffon in the second minute. But PSG swiftly began to dominate and drew level 10 minutes later - Bernat applying a straightforward finish after Kylian Mbappe's pass across the face of goal.

Despite their dominance, PSG fell behind again before half-time, as Buffon spilled Rashford's long-range shot and Lukaku punished him, shortly before United – who are already dealing with a lengthy injury list – withdrew Eric Bailly following a mistimed Marco Verratti challenge.

PSG should have put the tie beyond United late on, but Mbappe slipped when trying to round David de Gea, while Bernat hit the post when the loose ball ran into his path.United made them pay.

Diogo Dalot's long-range strike hit the arm of Kimpembe in the box and, following a review, a contentious penalty was given, with Rashford confidently smashing his kick beyond Buffon to spark mayhem among the United fans and book a place in the last eight.

Porto 3 Roma 1 (aet, 4-3 agg): Telles hits last-gasp winner after VAR drama

    10673382-6779719-image-a-24_1551912763487.jpg

Alex Telles scored a match-winning penalty with three minutes of extra-time remaining as Porto beat Roma 3-1 to clinch a 4-3 aggregate victory and progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Roma took a 2-1 lead into the second leg after an uninspiring victory at Stadio Olimpico but Porto levelled the last-16 tie when Tiquinho Soares scored from close range to put the hosts ahead on the night.

Daniele De Rossi struck from the penalty spot but Moussa Marega made it 2-1 early in the second half before Wednesday's game petered out and went into extra-time.

A penalty shoot-out looked imminent until Alessandro Florenzi's shirt pull on Fernando prompted a VAR consultation and, after referee Cuneyt Cakir pointed to the spot, Telles stepped up to send Estadio do Dragao into raptures as Porto reached the last eight for the first time in four years.

The result puts Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco's future in doubt, with the club outside the top four in Serie A having suffered a derby defeat to Lazio last time out and no longer in contention for any silverware.Porto, meanwhile, are the first Portuguese club to defeat Italian opposition in the Champions League since 2005 and Sergio Conceicao's men can continue to dream of European glory while pushing for the Primeira Liga title.

Porto deservedly levelled the tie after 26 minutes when Kostas Manolas, making his 200th Roma appearance, was dispossessed in midfield and the hosts poured into the box where Marega's cross beat goalkeeper Robin Olsen and Soares side-footed into the empty net.

But Roma restored their overall advantage after Diego Perotti was brought down on his way into the box by Eder Militao and De Rossi sent Iker Casillas the wrong way with his spot kick after staggering his run up.Lorenzo Pellegrini replaced the struggling De Rossi at the end of the first half and Soares sent a diving header narrowly over as Porto sought to level the tie at 3-3.

Olsen then made a good save at full stretch from Marega but there was nothing the goalkeeper could do when the same player applied a volleyed finish to Corona's in-swinging cross, lifting the ball high into the net with his instep from point-blank range.

Perotti was guilty of a glaring miss, hooking wide from 12 yards when allowed to run through on goal unchallenged, before the second half ground to a halt with both sides reluctant to get caught on the break.Marega lashed a shot over early in extra-time but chances were few and far between until Edin Dzeko missed two in quick succession as the hosts began to tire.

But substitute Maxi Pereira piled forward in the 117th minute and flashed the ball across the face of goal where it was deemed Fernando had his shirt pulled by Florenzi.Telles made no mistake, slamming the penalty into the left side of the net and clinching a historic victory.

'No way' Solskjaer isn't given Man United manager job - Neville

Gary Neville believes there is “no way” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t given the full-time job as Manchester United manager following the club’s 3-1 second-leg win over PSG on Wednesday, which saw the club into the Champions League quarter-finals.

Solskjaer took over as interim boss in December following Jose Mourinho's departure and has led a remarkable turnaround in form which has seen the Reds bridge an 11-point gap to the top four. The Norwegian has also taken United into the FA Cup quarter-finals with victories over Arsenal and Chelsea in rounds four and five respectively. The former Manchester United defender had earlier predicted that the 46-year-old would be appointed by the club “in the next couple of weeks”, and while he still believes that to be the right timeline, he says Wednesday’s result makes it even less likely that the club won’t hand the job to their interim boss.

“There is no way he is not going to get the job,” he told Viasport following the match. “I think it’s just a case of the timing. I think they’ll stick to the original timing.

“I don’t think they’ll bring it forward because they’ve got a big game on Sunday against Arsenal. So why would you distract everything from that game? You wouldn’t do. You’d stick to the plan.”And while the signing may have to wait, Neville joked that Wednesday’s win over PSG may have raised the amount Manchester United will have to spend to sign the Norwegian to a full-time deal with the club.

“There was no doubt before the game for me,” he said of the club giving Solskjaer the job on a full-time basis. “After the game, he can name the length of his contract, he can name his salary, he can put a statue outside of the ground wherever he wants. “He can do whatever he wants after that.” The win over PSG will go down as a historic moment for the club.

The French giants held a 2-0 lead heading into the night and the miraculous turnaround saw Man Utd become the first club to ever advance in the Champions League after losing by two or more goals at home in the first leg.And Neville believes the match rates among the best nights in club history given the circumstances.

“This feels out of this world just because of the size of the task, and also the team Manchester United had tonight,” he said. “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to play the young boys, all the midfield is gone, Martial is not there.“I’ve not seen many games like that in my time. “As a fan it was absolutely out of this world. I didn’t give them a chance. Not one chance.”
