Messi will play for Argentina again, claims D'Andrea

    lionelmessi-cropped_1bl14ol74n1w119yen6wwn3n2r.jpg

There are no doubts Lionel Messi will lead Argentina at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, according to national team masseur Marcelo D'Andrea.

Messi announced he will retire from international football after suffering defeat in the Copa America Centenario final against Chile last Sunday. The loss was the fourth time Messi has tasted defeat in a major tournament final, leading to the 29-year-old's decision to quit internationals.

However, D'Andrea revealed Messi did not notify anyone of his decision within the camp, and is confident the Barca star will represent Argentina once again. "I have no doubts that Leo will play at the [2018] World Cup," he told FM Pop. "I have a lot of faith in him and we must leave him alone for now.

"I trust him in his silence. He loves the national team and he will do everything for his country."He added: "No one knew anything about Messi's retirement. He didn't say anything in the locker room.

"It is the hardest blow he has received with the national team, without doubt. He is one of my best friends and it is hard to see him how he is feeling."

Tevez stands up for Messi: The AFA is a mess

    tevezmessi-cropped_tivgw8uczqwu15i15g894khur.jpg

Carlos Tevez has come out in defence of compatriot Lionel Messi after the Argentina captain announced he is retiring from international football.Messi shocked the world of football after revealing he will quit internationals, having suffered another defeat in a major tournament.

Sunday's penalty shoot-out loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario decider was the fourth time Messi had tasted defeat in a final representing Argentina. Following losses in the 2007 and 2015 Copa finals, as well as the 2014 World Cup decider, Messi claimed he was "tired" of the national team.

However, Tevez, among others, believe the decision was partly due to his fledging relationship with the Argentine Football Association (AFA). "The AFA is an absolute mess," Boca Juniors captain Tevez told TyC Sports.

"Leo sees the players breaking their backs for the shirt and sees the AFA neglecting them. "We have to put ourselves in his position. He is tired, and that's normal. I also got tired of the national team a few times. "We have to give him time. It is obvious that we need him.

"After a few games have passed and everything at the AFA is a bit more organised, perhaps the national team can seduce him back - and we will be waiting for him."

Cole backs 'maverick' Ibrahimovic to shine at Man Utd

    3409272_heroa.jpg

Andy Cole has backed “maverick” Zlatan Ibrahimovic to make a huge impact at Manchester United after completing his move to Old Trafford.

United completed the signing of Ibrahimovic on Friday, after the former Sweden international announced his move to the club via a typically theatrical Instagram post.

And Cole believes that the 34-year-old, who scored 156 goals in 180 games at PSG, will thrive at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho."He's a maverick who speaks his mind and that's my kind of guy. He's a footballer who scores goals and has achieved everything," he told MUTV.

"I think he'll make a massive impact here, just with his presence and the way he is.I think the fans will love him and appreciate him. He is a big-game guy. If you look at his CV, wherever he has gone, he has won championships and scored goals.

"He got 50 goals in France last season [in Ligue 1, the French cups and Champions League] and, while people might say it's not the strongest league, regardless he's done it. Can he score goals in the Premier League? Yes. Can he make a big impact at Old Trafford? I honestly do believe so."I think it's a massive coup, I really do believe that, as he's such a big presence with what he can bring to Old Trafford."

Ibrahimovic has won a league title with every club he has played for – Ajax, Juventus, Inter, Barcelona, Milan and PSG – and will hope to continue his incredible record with United.

Deschamps: Iceland are not just long-throw merchants

Didier Deschamps says his France side will not treat Iceland as a bunch of long-throw experts when the two sides meet in Sunday’s Euro 2016 quarter-final.

The Nordic nation progressed to the last eight by virtue of a shock 2-1 victory over England in Nice on Monday, with their first goal coming as a result of one such throw. But while many have praised the minnows for their expertly choreographed routines Deschamps insists they have much more to their game.

“We’ve worked on things, but we know Iceland are not here by chance. They have not stolen their place here, and they are not just about the long throws it’s just that they have more throw-ins than corners so they make the most of it,” the France coach told a pre-match press conference.

“But they have a number of other attributes about their play, they don’t just loft the ball forward they also most the ball swiftly around the deck. They have players of athletic power but they have [Johann] Gudmundsson, [Birkir] Bjarnason and [Gylfi] Sigurdsson who are very technically gifted. What’s important is really making sure we are up to the challenge.”

Deschamps will be forced into a defensive change to the France side which saw off the Republic of Ireland in their round of 16 encounter due to the suspension of Adil Rami.

But while Barcelona-bound Samuel Umtiti has been tipped for an international debut, Deschamps has not ruled out calling upon Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala instead.“Do you want me to tell you Eliaquim Mangala’s attributes too or are you not bothered?!” he joked when asked about the Lyon defender’s qualities.

“Samuel has a lot of experience because he has already played in the Champions League with Lyon and was an under-21 champion with France. He’s very strong in the challenge, is technically gifted with the first pass out of defence and is worthy of being an international player as well as earning a potentially big move.”

The clash with Iceland takes place on Sunday at the Stade de France, with the winners facing Germany or Italy in Thursday’s second semi-final.

Borussia Dortmund want Schurrle, says Wolsburg chief

    schurrle-cropepd_anxbpy19lxs213zm0jks2uzj8.jpg

Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs claims Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing forward Andre Schurrle, but is adamant the club do not need to sell players.

Dortmund are thought to be keen on strengthening their attack with Henrikh Mkhitaryan expected to seal a move to Manchester United and have reportedly earmarked Schurrle as a potential replacement. The Germany international previously worked with BVB coach Thomas Tuchel at Mainz and a reunion could be on the cards ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

"It's clear that Dortmund's interest in Schurrle is related to his past with Tuchel," Allofs was quoted as saying by WAZ."We want to hold on to Andre and qualify for the Champions League again with him.

"But we obviously have to look at the economical side of things as well. Although we do not have to sell. It's not true that we have to sell players to balance the books. We need a good team.

"I cannot say anything about whether Dortmund have already made an offer."
Schurrle joined Wolfsburg from Chelsea in February 2015, but he has been struggling to make an impact at the Volkswagen Arena.

The versatile attacker, who has a contract until June 2019, scored nine goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances last season.

Liverpool to stand firm on £30m price tag for Benteke

    2502992_heroa.jpg

Liverpool will remain resolute in their £30 million valuation of Christian Benteke after rebuffing a £25m offer from Crystal Palace for the striker, Goal understands.
The Belgium international looks set for an Anfield exit a year after his switch from Aston Villa, with Jurgen Klopp possessing five other options to lead the line in his high-intensity approach.

Alan Pardew’s side tabled their opening bid for the 25-year-old on Friday, and are due to submit another proposal as they push to secure Benteke’s services after missing out on his countryman Michy Batshuayi to Chelsea.

There is not expected to be any compromise from Liverpool’s side, however, as they feel the market renders their quotation fair given his status as a proven Premier League goalscorer. They will stick by their basic fee, but will negotiate add-ons.
Benteke remains the explosive powerhouse the Reds signed from Villa for £32.5m, and there is no doubt he could reproduce his best form in a system that maximises his strengths.

The forward still managed to hit double figures last season, despite being a stylistic mismatch at Anfield.Liverpool’s position is fortified by the fact that West Ham, among others, also list Benteke as a potential target.

A player of his age and experience, with his goal return will generate plenty of interest given the dearth of quality attacking talent available in the window.Palace are confident of acquiring Benteke, and should the deal materialise on Liverpool’s terms, he will become the fourth biggest sale in the club’s history behind only Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres and Raheem Sterling.

The Reds would recoup most of the money they shelled out for the attacker with the basic fee, and could even make a profit should add-ons be factored in and then triggered over and above the £30m.

Ibrahimovic told his Manchester United squad number - and he's delighted!

    3409272_heroa.jpg

Even Zlatan Ibrahimovic is excited to learn what squad number he’ll have at Manchester United.

The 34-year-old looked like a kid on Christmas morning when he was told the answer during his unveiling on Friday.

United have not yet officially confirmed Ibrahimovic’s official squad number, but has the former Sweden international already revealed it?

During a clip aired on MUTV, Zlatan held up the back of the shirt for photographs and asked a member of United staff: “What number will I be?”

After being told, the striker appeared to say, “Eight? That’s cool,” before breaking out a huge grin.
If it is indeed No.8 - where does that leave Juan Mata?

:shocked:Fenerbahce put Van Persie up for sale just one year after Manchester United transfer

    2016052_heroa.jpg

Fenerbahce have placed Robin van Persie on their transfer list and are ready to listen to offers for the Dutchman.

The 32-year-old has spent just one season in Turkey having joined from Manchester United in a £3.8 million deal last July.

Van Persie scored 22 goals in 48 appearances last season as Fenerbahce finished five points behind Turkish champions Besiktas, but the striker now looks set for another move.

“Van Persie? We’re waiting for buyers, if he wants to be sold,” Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim told AMK Spor.

Falcao scores in first Monaco friendly since returning from Chelsea

    1962762_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao made an immediate impact on his return to Monaco after scoring in a friendly win over FC Lugano.

The 30-year-old has spent the last two seasons in the Premier League but he failed to shine in both loan spells at Manchester United and Chelsea.

Falcao’s last and only goal for Chelsea came in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last August, while he’s played just 14 minutes of competitive football in 2016.

The Colombia international had struggled with a thigh problem throughout the season, but he was able to feature from the start in Saturday’s friendly.

And Falcao managed to find the net with a neat turn and low finish in the 5-3 victory over the Swiss Super League side.
