Vardy hit with additional one-match ban

    3030692_heroa.jpg

Jamie Vardy has been hit with an additional one-match ban after admitting an improper conduct charge and will miss Leicester City's potentially title-deciding game against Manchester United.

Vardy was sent off in the Foxes' encounter with West Ham and subsequently missed Sunday's match against Swansea City.

He will now also sit out at the trip to Old Trafford - though Leicester have confirmed that he will travel with the squad despite his ineligibility - and has been fined £10,000 for the incident.

The England international has scored 23 goals this season but Claudio Ranieri's men will have to do without him against United, likely turning again to Leonardo Ulloa, who scored twice in Vardy's absence in a 4-0 defeat of Swansea.

Vardy was hit with the charge for his reaction to being sent off by referee Jon Moss, who had shown him a second yellow card for simulation, while the Foxes were accused of failing to control their players.

Vidal: Bayern the best team in the world - I want to retire here

    arturovidal-cropped_1ixc40d42kks013piycs1sev4u.jpg

Arturo Vidal believes Bayern Munich are "the best team in the world" and hopes to spend the rest of his career with the club.

The Chile international has become a crucial player for the Bavarian giants since joiningfrom Juventus last year.

Bayern, who are expected to wrap up the Bundesliga title on Saturday when they host Borussia Monchengladbach, take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday as they target a European and domestic treble. And Vidal feels they are capable of winning everything this term and has no plans to leave the club before he hangs up his boots.

"Thanks to all the effort I have put in over time I'm now at the best team in the world," Vidal told ESPN FC. "I hope to remain here until I retire.

"Now I know my team-mates. We are more than a group, we are like a family, and this gives me a lot of confidence.

"At first it was difficult because I came from a different style of football, I had to get used to things, I had to adapt to a new team, new players. But I knew that at some point I would feel comfortable and be able to show everyone who I am as a player, like I showed everyone at Juventus. That moment has come."

The 28-year-old has already won titles with Chile and Juve but, with a Bundesliga crown set to be added to the collection, the Champions League remains the one piece of silverware missing for the midfielder, who is sure his side can beat the likes of Atletico, Manchester City and Real Madrid to the title this term."I believe it's the most important title for a player, and I hope this year I can win it and continue to grow," he said.

"I think Bayern is the favourites, because of the players we have, because of the manager we have, because of what he is doing, because Bayern always gives teams trouble in this stage of the Champions League."It's difficult for any team to win against Bayern."

Pepe: I am not violent - Neymar is worse!

    pepe-neymar-cropped_1jsybalts11pr1v0ty2sdm2ze5.jpg

Real Madrid defender Pepe has dismissed suggestions he is a violent player and has pointed out that Barcelona forward Neymar has been booked more this campaign.

Pepe has been involved in a number of controversial incidents throughout his career, receiving a 10-match ban in 2008-09 after stamping on Getafe's Javier Casquero, while also making the headlines for the wrong reasons in games against Barcelona on more than one occasion.

The centre-back has been booked five times in 20 La Liga appearances this season, with Neymar seeing yellow six times in 31 games, and he believes he does not deserve his reputation as a violent player, insisting Madrid would already have offloaded him had he really been "crazy".

"The people can say what they want, but fact remains that Neymar has been booked more often than me," Pepe told Surface.

"Real Madrid are an exemplary club. I would never have had the chance to play for this club for such a long period had I really been such a crazy, violent player."
The 33-year-old has been at Madrid for almost nine years, having joined from Porto in summer 2007.

:baffled:Hummels thinking about Bayern, confirms Rummenigge

    mats-hummels-cropped_xxh7tdggp53o1cldhqosrakq2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is considering the prospect of a return to Bayern Munich, according to CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Signal Iduna Park at the end of the season, with his contract due to expire in 2017.

Speculation has grown that Hummels, who has said he is losing sleep while agonising over his future, would prefer a move back to Bayern, where he progressed through the youth ranks.

Rummenigge would not be drawn on any possible talks with Dortmund, but claims the player is open to a transfer.

"I can echo [Dortmund chief executive officer] Hans-Joachim Watzke's words – Mats Hummels is thinking about FC Bayern," he told the media prior to Bayern's trip to face Atletico Madrid. "But in every transfer three parties are involved.

"I don't want to go into depth today, we will have to stay calm and wait. There is still lots of time until the end of that transfer window."Watzke admitted on Monday that Dortmund would not stand in Hummels' way if he makes it clear he wants to leave.

Aubameyang: I want to play in Spain or England

    2798392_heroa.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has put Europe’s top clubs on alert after admitting he is keen to leave Germany, though the Premier League would not be his first choice if he does move.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a summer move after scoring 34 goals in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund this season, second only to Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga scoring charts.

Having already sampled football in Italy, France and Germany, Aubameyang is now keen to test himself in either Spain or England – though he feels more drawn towards La Liga.

Asked if he is aiming to play in all five of Europe’s top leagues across his career, he revealed: “I hope so! Why not? It would be very good, very nice. We will see.

“My dream is to play in Spain, because my mother is from Spain and I have some family there. It is one of my dreams. But for the moment I’m in Germany.”

Although La Liga may be the Gabon international’s preferred destination, he admits he would love to taste the Premier League and reckons his pace is ideally suited to the division.

“I watch the Premier League for sure. I watch some games,” he continued during an interview for the Meet A Star foundation.

“The teams are very, very good and I like it because every game is open. And there’s so much space – and I love space because then I can run! That’s why it’s a very good and very special league.”

Aubameyang took on English sides in back-to-back Europa League ties, first against Tottenham and then Liverpool, and he believes the Jurgen Klopp factor proved crucial in Dortmund’s elimination during a thrilling night at Anfield.

“Even now I can’t believe it. It’s unbelievable. But we knew Liverpool could do this,” said Aubameyang of the Reds’ improbable comeback.

“For sure I think Jurgen Klopp was a factor. When we played in Dortmund, everyone was speaking about him and he knows us.
“After 3-1 I don’t think we thought ‘OK, now we can keep calm’, but I think we were a little bit too deep in our own half. Normally we’d have done more pressing and it would have been good.

“Liverpool have something special. Klopp has brought this energy. They can win every time, and even when they’re losing they can come back. They have something special I think, and they can win the Europa League for sure.”

Van Gaal should only stay if he wins FA Cup and finishes in top four, says Ferdinand

    3035042_heroa.jpg

Rio Ferdinand feels Louis van Gaal could yet stay on as Manchester United manager provided he wins the FA Cup and secures a top-four finish. The Red Devils booked their place in the FA Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Everton on Saturday and will face Crystal Palace at Wembley on May 21.

United remain in the hunt for Champions League qualification, currently five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with a game in hand, and Ferdinand says securing both will prove Van Gaal’s team are heading in the right direction.

"If he wins the FA Cup and United finish in the Champions League [qualification places] he could sit there and say that is progression,” he told talkSPORT.

"Speaking to people at Manchester United in and around the ground and supporters around the country, they are not playing the type of football they are accustomed to seeing at Manchester United.

"They want to see football that is respectful of their history of the club. It has been a lot of sideways, sideways football."But I watched the game at the weekend and if that is a sign of things to come, then Louis van Gaal has got a great argument to put forward.

“This season has been a bit doom and gloom for Manchester United with the way they have played but Louis van Gaal's legacy if he is going to have one when he leaves is the introduction of all these young boys, with Rashford leading the charge," said Ferdinand.

"It has been great for football and it will be nice for managers around the country to take heed of that.

"Bringing in young players as he has and getting to the FA Cup final - albeit they are not doing too well in the league - that is a good part of his time and story at Manchester United."

Atletico have no weaknesses, Falcao warns Bayern

    radamelfalcao-cropped_1nyz03l29oaom10pvd29kmu0uy.jpg

Bayern Munich will come up against an Atletico Madrid side with no weaknesses when they meet in the Champions League semi-finals, says Radamel Falcao.

Atletico's miserly defence has only conceded five goals on the way to the last four – the joint lowest in the competition – while the frontmen found their scoring boots to oust Barcelona with three goals across two legs in the quarter-finals.

Bayern booked their place in the semis thanks to a 3-2 aggregate win over Benfica, the German giants scoring twice in Lisbon after a 1-0 win at home.

However, Falcao – who scored 70 goals in two years at Vicente Calderon – has warned Bayern that doing the same against Diego Simeone's side will not be so easy.

"Atletico has no weaknesses," he told Sport Bild."Everyone knows exactly what he has to do and they work hard together on the pitch, especially defensively."

We didn’t want to go in for the kill - Bale

    hd-gareth-bale-man-city-real-madrid_1lmr7u0wopkn01aajis6u7luhl.jpg

Gareth Bale says Real Madrid were wary of adopting a gung-ho approach in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City after being burned by Wolfsburg in the previous round.

The Bernabeu club suffered a shock 2-0 reverse in Germany and were made to fight back to win in dramatic circumstances in the Spanish capital, and the Wales international star indicated it was imperative that they were not so benevolent to Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Indeed, he was quite content with the goalless draw that Los Blancos earned on Tuesday.

“We didn’t want to go for the kill straight away and put ourselves in trouble,” he admitted to BT Sport. “We were trying to learn from our mistakes against Wolfsburg. It was a disciplined performance in the first half.

"In the second half we came out a bit more, went at them, and were unlucky not to get some penalties and a goal. But we’re in a good position now for the home tie.”

The 26-year-old was in a bullish mood with regards the second leg in Spain.

“We’re very, very strong at home, the crowd gets behind us, there’s big pitch, and we like to score goals,” he continued.

“It’s going to be a difficult game - we know that - but one we’re really confident about and looking forward to.”

Madrid have won all seven of their home Champions League matches this term, and have not even conceded in any of these games.

Zidane 'hopeful' Ronaldo & Benzema will be fit for second leg

    3068262_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid are hopeful that both Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema will be fully fit for the Champions League semi-final second leg after the Portuguese sat out Tuesday’s match against Manchester City.

Manager Zinedine Zidane – who had said both players were “100 per cent” fit previously – confirmed that the 31-year-old felt a twinge in the final training session before the game, aggravating the thigh strain he picked up against Villarreal, while Benzema had to be withdrawn at half-time.

But the French boss is planning to be able to call upon the duo at the Santiago Bernabeu and was reluctant to risk Ronaldo in Manchester, with a 0-0 draw giving his side a solid foundation ahead of the return leg.

“I said 100% but I did say there was still the training session to go,” Zidane said after watching his side’s goalless stalemate at the Etihad Stadium.

“Cristiano felt something after that. That is all there is to it. We didn’t want to make things worse. Karim it was a little bit different but little by little he felt a bit worse in himself. We didn’t want to gamble on his fitness.

“We know how important both players are for us. We hope they can both be in the second leg but we have to take it day by day.”

Asked if they would make the second leg, he continued: “We are going to try and get them fit. That is our plan. I can’t assure you of anything. I can’t tell you right now if they will be fit. We have to look at it day by day.”

Leicester do not need Vardy to win title at Manchester United, says Simpson

    danny-simpson-leicester_r1fpsio9xwqc18eoqs13158vb.jpg

Leicester City defender Danny Simpson says his side can win the Premier League title at Manchester United on Sunday, even without star striker Jamie Vardy.

Vardy was hit with an extra-game suspension and fined £10,000 by the FA for verbally abusing referee Jon Moss after he sent him off in the 2-2 draw with West Ham earlier this month. However, the 29-year-old was not missed in their following fixture against Swansea City, with replacement Leonardo Ulloa scoring twice in a 4-0 win.

Leicester can win the title if they defeat United at Old Trafford this weekend, and Simpson insists their performance against Swansea shows they do not need Vardy to perform at their best and score goals.

"I think we have just sent a message to everyone who has been a bit negative about us," Simpson told reporters.

"We have players who can come in and do well. Leo [Ulloa] was man of the match against Swansea and Jeff Schlupp came in and was excellent. "Demarai Gray came on and what a cameo it was from him and Marc Albrighton as well.

"It is all about the squad. We have had a settled team but we have always known the players who are trying to get in the team can do well."Whenever we are going to Old Trafford for us it is a big game.

"We want to enjoy it and are looking forward to working hard this week and going to Old Trafford to try and perform again and get the three points."

'Ferguson genuinely disappointed about Manchester United transfer flop'

    2051722_heroa.jpg

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew claims Sir Alex Ferguson is “disappointed” that Wilfried Zaha was not a success at Manchester United.

Zaha was Ferguson’s final signing at United but made only four first-team appearances under David Moyes before eventually returning to Palace, initially on loan before making the move permanent in February 2015.

The 23-year-old is set to face United in the FA Cup final next month and Pardew has revealed that Ferguson is still keen to track the winger’s progress.

"Zaha had a slight injury before [the semi-final], which we were worried about, then he went and nearly scored one of the great semi-final goals," said Pardew.

"The final is going to be a big day for Wilf. This guy has got unbelievable potential. I spoke to Sir Alex in the week. He was asking about him because I think he's genuinely disappointed it didn't work out for Wilf."

Lewandowski: Maybe I will play in England or Spain

    robertlewandowski-cropped_z6inrvglyi0e1bvczq9wjl8wu.jpg

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has admitted he could be tempted to play in the Premier League or La Liga.

The Poland international has spent the majority of his senior career in Germany, having signed for Borussia Dortmund from Lech Poznan in 2010 before moving to arch-rivals Bayern Munich in 2014.

His incredible strike rate - he has scored 63 goals in 95 appearances since joining Munich - has made him a transfer target for the game's biggest clubs.

But he will only leave for a club that can consistently compete for trophies in the same fashion that Bayern Munich do."Maybe I'll play in England or Spain one day," Lewandowski told France Football.

"But, if I committed to pursuing my career in Munich, it's because I considered it the ideal club at which to move up a level and to win more trophies."The fact that every season they reach at least the semi-finals of the Champions League impressed me.

"Apart from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, what other teams can brag about such consistency?"I don't know what my future will look like but at the moment I'm very happy at Bayern."

However, Lewandowski said his idol growing up was Arsenal great Thierry Henry, suggesting he might be tempted to try and emulate the Frenchman's feats at the north London club as they look to re-establish themselves as genuine title contenders in England and in Europe."Thierry Henry has always been my idol, especially when he played for Arsenal. I watched a lot of his matches," he said.

Lewandowski might even be tempted to Manchester City to continue working with current coach Pep Guardiola, who will head to the Premier League at the end of the season.

"With him I have made much progress. After three months with him, I realised that I had already taken several steps," he added.

Torres: Nothing would compare to winning a title with Atleti

    fernandotorres-cropped_100rc2dubumng1lazpw81zfvgv.jpg

Fernando Torres says no other achievement in his footballing career would compare to winning the Champions League title with Atletico Madrid.

Torres has won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League with Chelsea, as well as the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 titles with Spain. However, the Atleti youth graduate has only lifted the 2001-02 Segunda Division with his boyhood club.

Now, with their semi-final first leg against Bayern Munich coming up, Torres is eager to etch himself into the history books at the La Liga outfit.

"We want to write a new chapter in the club's history," the Spaniard said. "We can do that now. We have a fantastic opportunity - a huge game against one of the favourites. Now we have a huge match ahead of us.

"There is no better way to celebrate the club's 113-year birthday than to play a game like this. We are here to write that new chapter. I hope that within a few weeks we can say we have taken one more step.

He added: "I feel very fortunate to have played in great teams, have had unbelievable nights and trophies with Spain. But for me personally, nothing could compare to doing it with Atleti.

"Being united we know we can lift the fans, make them believe, and [Wednesday] will be another chance to show them the correct way to win."Atleti are also still in the hunt for the La Liga title, level on points with leaders Barcelona with three games left to play.

Chelsea agree deal for Roma midfielder Nainggolan

    hdp-radja-nainggolan-roma_945pv8xy44yz1axitcq666o7o.jpg

Chelsea have agreed a deal to bring Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan to Stamford Bridge this summer, Goal understands. The Blues will pay £28 million for the Belgium international, as the player verbally agrees to sign a five-year deal with the Premier League champions.

He will become Antonio Conte's first signing after the Italy boss agreed a deal to replace Guus Hiddink after Euro 2016.Chelsea's deal for the box-to-box midfielder has been thrashed out over the last 48 hours with Roma and the player's representatives.

Roma's director of sport Walter Sabatini was spotted outside Stamford Bridge on 7 April and set up a meeting with Chelsea's transfer bosses, witht the Belgian midfielder Conte's number one target to strengthen his midfield.

Conte is an expert in the Serie A transfer market and knows that Roma often sell one of their best players every year to ensure they balance their books as they struggle to compete with Juventus on a financial and sporting level.

The 46-year-old has been linked with further business with Roma and former club Juve, and is thought to be targeting Kostas Manolas and Leonardo Bonucci in a bid to strengthen his defence.

Roma director Sabatini was resigned to losing his star midfielder and admitted on Tuesday that "Nainggolan is a universal midfielder, so strong in every area of the game that he is wanted by many clubs".

Roma and Chelsea won't make the transfer official until after the current season but Roma's representatives told Goal: "I know there is a Chelsea interest in Nainggloan but he is our player and we are happy with him, we cannot speak about the transfer market at this time."

Nainggolan's style of play is thought to be well suited to Premier League football and his signing may cast doubts over Jon Obi Mikel's future at the club. The Nigeria international told Goal that he would be open to moving on from west London if he is not assured a regular starting berth under Conte.

Villa: Griezmann at Messi and Ronaldo's level

    antoine-griezmann-cropped_siqa5sberwl8z8em3jtg8ojw.jpg

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann is at the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, according to David Villa.

France international Griezmann has enjoyed his best season to date in 2015-16, scoring 29 goals in all competitions to keep Atletico in the hunt for a league and Champions League double.

And Villa, who left Atletico to join New York City just prior to Griezmann's arrival from Real Sociedad in 2014, has no doubt that 25-year-old must now be considered among the very best players in the world.

Asked by Marca if the Frenchman is at Messi and Ronaldo's level, Villa said: "Yes. At the highest level you have to analyse things in a certain way, with all the different players, but Griezmann is one of the best players right now in world football. For the things that he's doing, the focus he has... "I have a lot of friends in the dressing room and they are amazed by him, as a person and a footballer. He's young, he has a long future as a forward and has massive potential."

Atleti have been boosted in recent weeks by the return to form of Fernando Torres, who has scored five in his last seven Liga appearances and struck a crucial away goal in the Champions League quarter-final tie with Barcelona, shortly before he was sent off for two bookings.

Villa says his compatriot's renaissance comes as little surprise given the ability he has demonstrated during his career.

"Torres is a fighter and a winner," he said. "Whenever people have tried to say things about him that aren't very good, he's responded on the pitch, he's never liked to make claims off it, and that's why I'm not surprised [by his form].

"I know him, I know his work rate and his capability and I'm happy for the form he's in. I hope he keeps it going for as long as possible."Villa, who lifted the league title and reached the Champions League final with Atleti in his sole season at the Vicente Calderon, has backed Diego Simeone's developing side to conquer Europe in the coming years even if they do not find a way past Bayern Munich in the semi-finals this time."It's been a fantastic campaign, maybe more similar to my year, because they have the chance to win the double," he said.

"La Liga doesn't depend on them, Barca are a fantastic team and I'm certain they'll win all their remaining games. But I'm sure Atletico will win them, too, and will hope for a slip-up.

"In the Champions League, Bayern are a very difficult opponent, one of the clear favourites before the tournament started, but Atletico are very strong in a two-legged tie.

"Hopefully it will be this season, but if not, with the path they've been on in the last few years, lifting the Champions League won't be far away."

    Cazorla open to Villarreal return

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has admitted he would be interested in a return to Villarreal at some stage in his career.

The 31-year-old joined Villarreal from Oviedo at the age of 17 and made over 200 appearances in all competitions for the club in two spells sandwiched by a brief stint at Recreativo Huelva. He left Villarreal for Malaga ahead of the 2011-12 campaign, only to join Arsenal one season later.

The midfielder has not forgotten about his former team, though, and is keen to return to El Madrigal before hanging up his boots."I do not rule out returning to Villarreal one day," Cazorla told AS.

"Everybody in the world knows that Villarreal are a very special club to me."
Cazorla has a contract with Arsenal until June 2017.He has made just 20 appearances in all competitions for the London club this season due to a knee injury and an Achilles problem.
