Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 Sevilla: Gameiro penalty gives Emery's men advantage

    3083132_heroa.jpg

Kevin Gameiro converted a late penalty for reigning champions Sevilla to help them to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie with Shakhtar Donetsk in Lviv. The Liga outfit started the match in superb fashion and went a goal up after just six minutes through Vitolo.

They were pinned back in their own half after the opener, though, and Marlos restored parity with a fine finish before setting up Taras Stepanenko to put the hosts ahead.

Sevilla got back in the game after the break and thought they had levelled the scoring when Gameiro found the net, only for the referee to disallow the goal for offside. The Frenchman then wasted two more gilt-edged chances to make it 2-2, before eventually netting from the spot eight minutes from time.

Sevilla needed just six minutes to open the scoring after a quick counter-attack, with Vitolo finding the net from close range. Ever Banega played in Gameiro from midfield, who passed it out wide for Vitolo and the winger cut inside before beating Andriy Pyatov with a left-footed finish.

Shakhtar immediately went in search of an equaliser and Marlos had a curled shot from 20 yards out comfortably saved by David Soria.

The hosts kept on pushing and were eventually rewarded in the 23rd minute when Marlos levelled the scoring. Yaroslav Rakitskiy sent the Brazilian clean through on goal with a sublime pass from midfield and he kept his cool in front of Soria to make it 1-1 with a placed shot in the far corner.

Taison then came close to giving Mircea Lucescu's men the lead when he fired just wide from the edge of the box on the half-hour mark.

Shakhtar did forge ahead in the 36th minute, though, with holding midfielder Stepanenko heading home from close range after Marlos' pinpoint cross from the left.Sevilla were in control in the opening stages of the second half and Steven N'Zonzi headed inches wide after the Shakhtar defence failed to clear a Mariano cross.

Marlos, meanwhile, continued to cause Sevilla all kinds of trouble down the other end and felt he should have been awarded a penalty when his shot struck Adil Rami's arm inside the area, before curling a shot wide minutes later.

The visitors were dealt a big blow with 20 minutes left when substitute Michael Krohn-Dehli was forced off with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

Gameiro had his 76th-minute effort chalked off, before firing over from deep inside the penalty area as Sevilla pushed hard for a late equaliser. The former PSG man again came close after being set up by Banega, only for Olexandr Kucher to frustrate him with a late block.

But Gameiro finally got his reward after Vitolo went to the ground following a duel with Facundo Ferreyra and the striker kept his cool to score from the spot and give his side an advantage ahead of the meeting in Spain next Thursday.

Villarreal 1-0 Liverpool: Last-minute Adrian goal sinks Reds

    3083102_heroa.jpg

Villarreal left it late to take the initiative in the Europa League semi-final, prevailing 1-0 over Liverpool thanks to Adrian Lopez's last-minute strike.

Adrian, who scored in Atletico Madrid's Champions League semi-final win over Chelsea in 2014, was on hand to potentially deal out further misery to a Premier League side, while Liverpool will need another inspired Anfield night next week.

Liverpool set pulses racing with a remarkable comeback and injury-time triumph over tournament favourites Borussia Dortmund in the previous round – a stark contrast to this largely cagey encounter.

Visiting manager Jurgen Klopp started without a conventional centre forward, leaving Daniel Sturridge as an unused substitute despite Divock Origi's injury absence and Liverpool lacked cutting edge despite a controlled display in midfield, led by the excellent James Milner.

Nominal attacking spearhead Roberto Firmino had a shot touched against the post by home goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo after Villarreal striker Cedric Bakambu came similarly close to his 10th Europa League goal of a stunning campaign.

It was left to fellow forward Adrian to crown a slick counter-attack – Bruno's lofted pass in behind Kolo Toure stylishly collected by Denis Suarez, who calmly rolled across goal to leave his team-mate with a simple finish.

Liverpool might have opened the scoring on their first attack of note in the fifth minute, but Joe Allen shot too close to Asenjo.

Former Tottenham forward Roberto Soldado sent a bouncing shot across Simon Mignolet's goal and the Liverpool keeper plunged to his left in the 21st minute to keep out Tomas Pina's 20-yard drive.

Toure got in the way of a sweetly struck Bruno effort and Alberto Moreno regained his footing to deflect Mario Gaspar's follow-up behind.

Bruno was Villarreal's main source of creativity and he found Soldado for the striker to spin into space and curl wide right-footed three minutes before the break.
The hosts almost led a minute into the second half when Bakambu rose to above Dejan Lovren to head Jonathan dos Santos' corner against the outside of the post.

Liverpool were operating with changed personnel by that stage, as Jordon Ibe replaced Philippe Coutinho at the break due to the Brazilian attacker feeling unwell. The play became increasingly listless as a scrappy content passed the hour, although it was soon Liverpool's turn to test the upright.

Firmino collected a measured pass from his captain, Milner, and fired a low shot goalwards that Asenjo did well to tip against the base of his near post.

A robust challenge from Lucas Leiva on Pina prompted a seemingly furious touchline confrontation between Klopp and opposite number Marcelino – order soon restored as the German embraced his opposite number with a trademark chuckle.

Adam Lallana was incorrectly flagged offside as he stole in behind the Villarreal defence and Eric Bailly's pursuit of the England international resulted in him hobbling from the field.

Bakambu drew a late save from Mignolet and Moreno tore forward to blast over the break from the subsequent corner before Suarez and Adrian combined to show them how it was done.

Klopp: Liverpool will be ready for Villarreal at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp has warned Villarreal that Liverpool will be ready for them when they meet at Anfield for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie next week.

The Reds went down 1-0 to Villarreal in Thursday's first leg, with Adrian's 92nd-minute close-range goal condemning the visitors to their first defeat in the Europa League this season.

The late winner sparked wild celebrations at El Madrigal, but Klopp reminded the Yellow Submarine that they still face a daunting trip to England next week.

"To be honest, it is the first leg," he said. "My first thought was 'sorry, but it is not over, you have to come to Anfield too and we will be ready!'

"Now we have to find solutions to a few things but I saw we are in a good way. I saw a lot of things that show we can do it."With the help of Anfield we can do it but please don't compare it with the Dortmund clash.

"Things are possible with 1-0, it is not the biggest result in the world. Villarreal know a lot more about us and they will respect us."

River Plate president hints at Falcao return

    39363_heroa.jpg

River Plate's Rodolfo D'Onofrio has confirmed contact has been made with former striker Radamel Falcao, and the president was confident he could return.

Falcao represented the Millonarios for four years before moving to Porto in 2009, and lifted a league title under Diego Simeone in the 2008 Clausura.

And as the Colombian continues to languish on the fringes of the Chelsea team, D'Onofrio admitted he would love to see him back at the Monumental.

"If Falcao decides to come back to River, he has the doors open to him, we started talking six months ago," he told TyC Sports.

While he refused to confirm whether Falcao would sign with the Argentine club, D'Onofrio was adamant that a deal was possible.

"Utopias, impossible dreams do not exist for me," he fired.

"It was an impossible dream for [Fernando] Cavenaghi to come back, but he did. It was impossible to bring back [Andres] D'Alessandro and he came.

"We will see... we do not lose hope, it depends on his attitude. D'Alessandro came back because he wanted to, or else it could not have happened.

"It's the same story with Falcao, if he wants to play at River we will move mountains to bring him back."

Emery insists Sevilla not there yet

    unai-emery-cropped_xa2eewem1zux1mxvicdldaki1.jpg

Unai Emery feels Sevilla still have work to do after seizing the advantage with two away goals in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Vitolo handed the reigning champions an early lead, but goals from Marlos and Taras Stepanenko saw Shakhtar go 2-1 up in the first half in Lviv.

Kevin Gameiro onverted a penalty late on to salvage an important away draw, though, and Emery expects another difficult game at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan next week.

"Both teams showed that they deserve to be in the semi-finals," the Sevilla coach said."The tie is still very open, it's 50-50. We will have to be at our very best in the return if we are to progress.

"I was not surprised by the first half, nor by the second half. I expect a similar game in the return."

Sevilla lost Michael Krohn-Dehli to injury after the break and Emery fears the Danish midfielder could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"Krohn-Dehli's injury looked very serious," he added."We have to be there for him now and we want to progress for him. It will serve as a motivation to us."Vitolo was one of Sevilla's key men, scoring once and winning the penalty, and the winger was pleased with the final result.

"Shakhtar have some great players and we suffered," he told AS."We never gave up, though, and the late goal was a great reward that puts in a good position.

"The coach always tells us to stay calm and wait for our moment and he got it right."

Pique: Losing La Liga would be a failure

Gerard Pique admitted that Barcelona's season would be a failure if they did the seemingly impossible and lost their La Liga title.

Pique has seen his team surrender a comfortable lead at the top of the La Liga table, following a 2-1 loss in the El Clasico against Real Madrid early in April. That defeat was the first of three straight losses in La Liga which has allowed Atletico to move equal on points with Barca, while Madrid trail by one point.

Barca were also eliminated from the Champions League by Atletico at the quarter-final stage.Spain international defender Pique struggled to explain the downturn in form, but said even the best sides have off-days.

"It is normal to have potholes throughout the year but we had bad luck that they have arrived at those crucial moments," Pique said.

"But we do not give them more importance."We still have the league and the Copa del Rey two very exciting titles and we have to go for them."

But should Barca fail to hold onto their slender La Liga lead with three games to play, Pique said the season would be a failure - as any season without a league title would be.

"As long as I have been at the club, if you do not win the league, it is a failure," he said."There are three league games and we are depending upon ourselves, but we may lose the league if we do not win matches.

"We in this club have to compete for the major titles and the league is [a major title]."

Herrera: Man Utd don't want Leicester to win title at Old Trafford

    anderherrera-cropped_qlbi60ijinv21vus2uxp2z808.jpg

Ander Herrera is determined to spoil Leicester City's Premier League title party this weekend as Manchester United look to qualify for the Champions League.

Leicester - seven points clear at the top of the table - have the chance to claim the Premier League trophy with victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, but Herrera and Co. have other ideas.

United's Champions League hopes remain alive with four matches of their season left, as they sit five points adrift of Manchester City and Arsenal with a game in hand on both. And Herrera insists that he and his team-mates want to delay Leicester's coronation in Manchester.

"First of all I have to say that we think about Manchester United, we are still in the race, we have to be in the top four it's very important for us," he told Sky Sports News.

"After that it is true that we are playing against Leicester, a very good side who are playing fantastic. But we don't want them to win the title at Old Trafford - I think they deserve to win the league but I hope they can do it at home."We are Manchester United and we have to win because we have to be in the Champions League next season.

"Leicester can win the league at Old Trafford but it is not our business. Our business is Manchester United, we have to fight until the end for the top four and that's what we are going to do.

"After that if Leicester wants to win the league at home they will have to play very good because I think we are in a good moment."

Wenger: I want Arsenal to be better after I leave

    arsenewenger-cropped_1xsr9pgikvfgf13pqd7up81gv3.jpg

Arsene Wenger has admitted he wants Arsenal to be better after he leaves the club, indicating that he will be the Gunners' "biggest supporter".

The club have won the Premier League three times during Wenger's reign but have not lifted the trophy since 2004, with their recent triumphs instead limited to the FA Cup, which the north Londoners won in both 2014 and 2015.

And, speaking ahead of the club's match with Norwich City - with Arsenal now mathematically ruled out of the title race - Wenger has responded to fan disharmony and calls for him to resign, suggesting the Gunners can prosper when he eventually leaves due to his work at the club.

"I wish when I go the club goes higher up and wins the Champions League and championship every year," the Frenchman told a media conference."I will be the biggest supporter in the stand because I will feel i have contributed to that.

“You have to remember when we built the stadium, we had five to seven difficult financial years. We had to be three years in the Champions League and have a 54,000 average attendance.

"We had to sell our best players and survive. And we didn’t do three years out of five, we did five years out of five. During that time it was very competitive.”Wenger has also aired his own frustration at Arsenal's failure to launch a prolonged challenge for the Premier League title, with Leicester City and Tottenham the only clubs now able to be crowned champions this season.

“It is very frustrating as we were in the position for a long, long time to compete for the title," he added. "We won the FA Cup twice and the Community Shield and wanted to go one step up and win the league and that is why we are frustrated.
“I can understand the frustration because nobody is more frustrated than we are. Our disappointment has not to go too far."

Pogba: I want to become a better version of Frank Lampard

    2897022_heroa.jpg

Juventus star Paul Pogba says he wants to become a better version of Frank Lampard.

The 23-year-old secured the fourth Serie A title of his career earlier this week and could win the domestic double if Juve beat AC Milan in next month’s Coppa Italia final.

Pogba has attracted interest from a host of Europe’s elite including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City, and the midfielder is intent on becoming the “strongest midfielder ever”.

“I've only won four Scudetti,” Pogba told La Repubblica.

“They're not enough for me. I've always been like this, people called me crazy but I want to make history and become the strongest midfielder ever.

“I'd like to surpass [Frank] Lampard. I want to be the midfielder who can do everything, and at the highest levels. Shooting, dribbling, scoring, defending. I want to be like Lampard, but better.

“As for money, I know it comes and goes. I'd be lying if I said it makes no difference not having it, but I see it as a consequence of hard work. The stronger you are, the more you make. Ronaldo deserves the pay he gets, it's not like he steals it.

“As for my future, I want to beat Carpi, then I want the Coppa Italia, and then Euro 2016 in France. After that, I have a contract with Juventus, I can't just get up one morning and take a plane to England. Ask the people who work in the transfer department.”

Pogba also insists the world’s best players are often mistaken for being selfish.

“If [Lionel] Messi scores, does that make him selfish?” Pogba said.
“No, being strong lets you help the team. Take Cristiano Ronaldo. He sets himself some incredibly high objectives, he's ambitious, he wants to beat every record, he wants the Ballon d'Or. That's not selfishness.

“Sometimes I play well, and sometimes I don't. That's why I get angry. I hate making mistakes. I made even more mistakes back when I played in the street, and I used to react exactly the same way. Improving, and reducing mistakes – that's what I call experience.”

    Torres tight-lipped on Atletico future

    fernandotorres-cropped_17nmbca9koxtd1qmoec0p3whyc.jpg

The future of Fernando Torres remains uncertain after the Atletico Madrid striker insisted he is just focused on the "present".Torres is on loan from AC Milan until the end of the season, when his contract with the Serie A club also expires.

The 32-year-old has scored five goals in his past seven games in all competitions, but Diego Simeone has yet to assure Torres of his future beyond the 2015-16 campaign.

However, the ex-Liverpool man is just concentrating on guiding Atletico to La Liga and Champions League success, with the Madrid club second in the league and 90 minutes away from a European final."It's just unreal to be able to enjoy this moment with the team. It's fantastic," Torres told Radio Marca.

"I've had the luck to enjoy it from the stands, from my time at other teams, and being able to live in from the inside of the club is something special, I'm loving every minute."The future? No, no, I live in the present. The important thing is to live in the moment you're in."

Torres, who struggled for form at Milan and Chelsea, added: "I was at a point when I needed something to bring back the excitement, to feel motivated, to feel part of a group that wanted to compete. I needed to believe in something and feel the excitement again and I couldn't find it anywhere else."Coming back here gave me what I needed in that moment. I was back fighting for something that I've always wanted. I'm lucky enough to have a family that has always supported my decisions."

While uncertainty surrounds Torres and his club future, the two-time European Championship winner and 2010 World Cup champion is certain he will not represent Spain again.Torres - with 110 caps to his name - has not played for Spain since the 2014 World Cup.

"I didn't ask for a call, and I don't want one. What I would have liked will stay with me, because I don't want my words to harm the team," he added."I have no problems with [coach] Vicente [Del Bosque] or the technical team."

Hummels has 'behaved impeccably', says Watzke

    matshummels-cropped_7u9ecgla0qtb1nliqveq230pj.jpg

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke insists Mats Hummels has "behaved impeccably" in recent days, despite making public his desire to join Bayern Munich this summer.

Hummels came through the ranks at Bayern before joining Dortmund in 2008, initially on loan, and has gone on to make close to 300 appearances in all competitions, winning two Bundesliga titles and one DFB-Pokal in the process.

The Germany international, whose contract expires at the end of next season, is now hoping to secure a return to the Allianz Arena in a move that has angered the Dortmund faithful.

Watzke, however, has now stressed that Hummels has followed the right process in admitting his wish to leave and has pleaded with Dortmund fans not to target the 27-year-old in Saturday's home game with Wolfsburg. He told the club's official website: "I understand many fans are disappointed. Nevertheless it is important for me to make clear that Mats has behaved impeccably."He has been open and honest with us at all times."

Dortmund go into Saturday's game with Wolfsburg seven points behind Bayern and will be aware that the Bavarian giants can win the title with a win over Borussia Monchengladbach. However, Watzke feels Dortmund's prospects remain positive, and has urged the fans to get behind the team instead of directing their ire at Hummels.

"I would be very happy if the disappointment of the BVB fans would not be used towards hostility against Mats," he added. "He would not deserve it after being in the middle of a great story for eight and a half years.

"Also, we are currently at a key stage of the season with good prospects. We can reach the highest points ever achieved and bring home the DFB-Pokal crown when we face Bayern in the final on May 21."Watzke has also reiterated that despite Hummels' wish to leave, the player will be going nowhere until a satisfactory offer is received.

"There is no update. An absolute pre-requisite for this transfer to happen this summer is that Bayern match our demands. I have not seen that yet," he said.

Rashford reminds me of Van Basten - Merson

    marcusrashford-cropped_15pu8yoskgi5y1o7z1f5magqto.jpg

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has been compared to Dutch football icon Marco van Basten due to his movement and finishing ability.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes Rashford's recent FA Cup goal against West Ham United was particularly reminiscent of Van Basten.

Rashford has scored seven goals in 14 United appearances, keeping his place in the side despite the return to fitness of club captain Wayne Rooney and earning comparisons to Patrick Kluivert from manager Louis van Gaal."I think Rashford's going to be a very, very special player," Merson said during an after-dinner speech.

"His goal the other day, his movement was... seriously I haven't seen movement like that for a long time. It reminded me of Van Basten if I'm honest."Seriously, his movement and for a kid that age to know what he was doing [is impressive]."

Merson believes Rashford is a "great talent", highlighting his most recent strike against Aston Villa as an example of his excellent movement in front of goal."He's going to have bad games. Of course he is. He's a young lad playing for a massive football club. I see enough just in that goal," Merson added.

"That goal was better than the West Ham goal because of his movement. It was just phenomenal. I think he's a great talent."

Arsenal and Chelsea set for summer battle over Manolas

    2971302_heroa.jpg

Arsenal have identified Kostas Manolas as their top defensive target this summer, Goal understands.

The Roma centre-back is wanted by several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United, after turning in a series of impressive performances in Serie A and the Champions League.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has identified the Greece international due to his ball-playing abilities and his astute reading of the game, while the fact that he is only 24-years-old offers room for Manolas to further improve.

However, Arsenal face serious competition for his signature, with Chelsea favourites to secure the defender's signature.Antonio Conte, who will take the reigns at Stamford Bridge this summer, has already held talks with Roma over securing Manolas and the Blues remain confident that they can beat the likes of Arsenal and United to his signature.

A clause exists in Manolas' contract which means Roma will come to owe 50% of his future transfer fee to Olympiacos, although Goal understands that the clause in question is negotiable and the Greek champions are likely to be forced to settle for a much lower figure.

Totti to Barca? Why not? - Luis Enrique

    francescototti-cropped_1sbqh2tmwgjia1llwfg53wo630.jpg

Luis Enrique hopes Francesco Totti remains at Roma beyond this season, but has playfully suggested that the door will always be open to him at Barcelona.

Totti was reported to have fallen out with coach Luciano Spalletti over a lack of playing time, claims that have since been denied.Since those reports the 39-year-old has scored three goals in as many outings to help put his team within reach of second place in Serie A.

A contract extension is reported to be in the offing for the Roma icon, and Luis Enrique, who coached Totti during the 2011-12 season, would love to see that occur.

However, asked if he would consider signing the Italian in a transfer similar to that which saw Henrik Larsson join the Catalan giants aged 32 in 2004, Luis Enrique joyfully replied: "Why not? If they sell him cheap!"Francesco Totti is the living history of Roma and I think he would like to finish his career at that club.

"It would be very strange to see him wearing another shirt, but if he wanted to then he could play for anyone. But as a bit of a Roma fan, I hope he stays there."

Pochettino defends banned Alli after 'small mistake'

Mauricio Pochettino has defended PFA Young Player of the Year Dele Alli after the midfielder was handed a three-game suspension for punching Claudio Yacob in Tottenham's 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Alli's offence was not spotted by the match referee but he was banned after cameras picked up on the incident, with the suspension subsequently ruling the 20-year-old out of action for the rest of the season.

Tottenham face Chelsea on Monday, but if Leicester City win at Manchester United on Sunday the Premier League title race will be decided in favour of the Foxes.Pochettino, who on Friday announced he has verbally agreed a new contract tying him to Tottenham until 2021, insisted Alli must learn from his error.

"Like everyone, the player can make a mistake. It was an action that nobody feels proud of but it's only one mistake, a small mistake," the Argentinian told reporters
"He should pay for that and learn from it. There are many reasons why something like this can happen on the pitch, but there is nothing more to say.

"He is a very strong character and personality and it is for that reason that he is one of the best players in England. We cannot change him. We all make mistakes and he made a mistake."

West Brom manager Tony Pulis praised Yacob for his reaction to Alli's punch, insisting his player should have received more credit.

"I've spoken to him and he said the punch wasn't below the belt so he took quite well," Pulis said. "Claudio didn't roll around, didn't make a meal of it, just got on with it."When you see some players, English players as well as South American players, falling around and rolling around at times when they've not been touched, I don't think he's taken the credit he deserves. He didn't make anything out of it."

Although Alli cannot play in any of Tottenham's three remaining Premier League games, Pochettino confirmed the England international will continue to train as normal.

"It's very important he keeps a high level of performance because he will be selected for the Euros," Pochettino said. "In the next few weeks he cannot play, but he needs to work maybe a little bit more to keep his physical condition."

Van Gaal: Manchester United cannot allow Leicester to win title at Old Trafford

Manchester United cannot allow Leicester City to win the Premier League title at Old Trafford on Sunday, says Louis van Gaal.Claudio Ranieri's men require one win in order to lift the trophy for the first time and could secure it at the home of the 20-time champions this weekend.

United, meanwhile, remain in the hunt for a top-four finish and qualification to the Champions League, but must make up a five-point deficit to Manchester City and Arsenal, over whom they have a game in hand.

And Van Gaal wants his team to delay Leicester's title triumph by picking up an important victory this weekend."We have to close the gap so the pressure is on us still. We have to win every game that we have to play. City still have to play against Arsenal, though, so one of those shall lose points," he told reporters.

"I think we have to beat Leicester because we are still in the race for the first positions so we have to beat them. We cannot allow that they are the champions this weekend at Old Trafford.

"I think they will be the champions a week later, so we don't spoil the party, just postpone it a little bit."It is good for the Premier League and the sport of football that not always the same teams are the champion.

"We are fighting for the qualification to the Champions League and we are still in the FA Cup, so we have to fight for something and we shall do it. Hopefully, we can beat Leicester City."
