I’ll be back in July, says Mourinho

    2983522_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has said that he will be back in football by the start of the new season, but the former Chelsea boss did not dropped any hints where he might take the hot seat.

The Portuguese left Stamford Bridge in December after a poor start to the season and has since been persistently linked with Louis van Gaal’s job as Manchester United manager. No deal has been struck, though, but the 53-year-old is confident he will have a new role by the beginning of pre-season.

“In July I will be back,” Mourinho told AP. “So we are in May. May to July is nothing. I keep enjoying my life which I'm doing, keep enjoying my family. But in July I am back.“Of course I miss it.”

He does hold some concerns that a late appointment will mean that he does not have full control over preparations for the campaign ahead.

“It's difficult because when you get a new club in this period normally the clubs have already done their work,” he said. “I'm not the Chelsea manager but I organised the Chelsea pre-season in many aspects because I did that 10 months ago.

“Clubs always have their commercial, marketing departments involved in everything. When a new manager arrives in May, June it's very difficult to touch in some points but we know that.“Scouting is done during the year. We know everybody, so it's just a question of trying to choose the players that your team needs.”

The ex-Real Madrid boss, who was speaking in Mexico after coaching a FIFA legends team to a 9-8 defeat against a Mexican All-Star outfit, claimed to know nothing of a potential switch to Manchester United.

“I don't know. I know nothing about it really,” he said. “I don't have a club and I was waiting for these guys [the FIFA Legends] to win the match to give me a hand but because I lost the match it's even more difficult to get a club!”

Benzema absence will hurt France's Euro 2016 hopes - Lizarazu

    karim-benzema-france_1wl4dj761fibh1mdaomc7am7cf.jpg

Bixente Lizarazu fears that Karim Benzema’s absence from France’s Euro 2016 squad will hurt the country’s hopes of glory.

Didier Deschamps will name his party on Thursday evening but the Real Madrid striker will not be present, with the French FA (FFF) having already taking the decision to omit him due to a sex-tape scandal involving Mathieu Valbuena.

The European Championship winner in 2000 believes this will be a difficult burden for a young group to carry.“On a sporting level, it’s an absence that will weigh heavily on the squad,” he told L’Equipe, "but to ensure that the preparations for the competition are serene, Didier could not have done anything else.

“We’ll be without out our most talented centre-forward. Of the French players, he’s also the most experienced at the highest level and has just had his best season with his club. When that’s with Real Madrid, that’s something that can’t be ignored.Lizarazu does not believe that all hope is lost, though.

“Fortunately, there is Antoine Griezmann. He can partially offset Benzema’s absence,” he continued. “During the friendlies in March, he took leadership of the attack. Anthony Martial and Kingsley Coman are both young – it would be a mistake to expect too much for them.

“Olivier Giroud has had an average second half to the season. Although he’s rarely disappointed with France, it remains a point of question.

“As for Andre-Pierre Gignac, he’s deserved his return to the national team but what will he really bring to the Euros? He’s had an excellent season in Mexico but that’s an average league so that’s another question.”The former Bayern star believes that going all the way will be difficult for France this summer.

“I think it is too soon for them,” he said, "but, I repeat, we will be very strong in 2018 and 2020. And I only hope that I am wrong!”France won Euro 84 playing on home soil then repeated the trick during World Cup 1998, with Lizarazu part of the squad.

Hazard captain as Belgium name Euro 2016 squad

    friendly-eden-hazard-belgium-vs-france_ubv4srcd77zu10tjhu7fyi6qb.jpg

Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard headlines Marc Wilmots' 24-man Belgium squad for Euro 2016, with Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany missing out due to injury.

Hazard struggled to find his best form at Chelsea this campaign, but remains an undisputed starter for his country, with Wilmots naming the winger his captain in the absence of Kompany."Kompany's absence is a blow for him, a blow for the team. He is our leader," the Belgium coach commented on the defender's injury.

"He must now focus on his recovery and his health, and make sure he returns as soon as possible at Manchester City. "We cannot mourn over his absence. We have to look forward."

Despite the absence of Kompany, Wilmots still has a number of high-profile options in defence.

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen could reprise their Tottenham partnership in the heart of Belgium's defence after playing as full-backs for much of qualifying.
Anderlecht star Steven Defour is the most notable omission in midfield, with wonderkid Youri Tielemans also missing out.

Belgium can also count on the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku in attack, with Liverpool duo Christian Benteke and Divock Origi making the cut, too.

Nacer Chadli, Kevin Mirallas and Thorgan Hazard have to settle for a place on the standby list, while Adnan Januzaj misses out altogether.

Wilmots has included nine defenders in his squad, in an attempt to cover a host of minor injury issues, although one is set to drop out once the final 23 is decided.
Belgium meet Italy, Sweden and Republic of Ireland in Group E, starting their tournament against the Azzurri on June 13.

    Squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea), Simon Mignolet (Liverpool), Jean-Francois Gillet (Mechelen)

Defenders: Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham), Nicolas Lombaerts (Zenit st Petersburg), Jason Denayer (Manchester City, on loan at Galatasaray), Dedryck Boyata (Celtic), Bjorn Engels (Club Brugge), Jordan Lukaku (Oostende), Thomas Meunier (Club Brugge), Thomas Vermaelen (Barcelona)

Midfielders: Axel Witsel (Zenit St Petersburg), Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United), Mousa Dembele (Tottenham), Radja Nainggolan (Roma)

Attackers: Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Romelu Lukaku (Everton), Dries Mertens (Napoli), Michy Batshuayi (Marseille), Christian Benteke, Divock Origi (Liverpool), Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco (Atletico Madrid)
Standby: Nacer Chadli (Tottenham), Laurent Ciman (Montreal Impact), Laurens De Bock (Club Brugge), Guillaume Gillet (Nantes), Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Monchengladbach), Kevin Mirallas (Everton), Matz Sels (Gent)

Leicester dominate Premier League Player of the Season nominees

    mahrezvardy-cropped_haqe198alq6d1cmqy5blo9q0h.jpg

Champions Leicester City have been rewarded for their remarkable campaign with five players nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season Award.

Star striker Jamie Vardy and attacker Riyad Mahrez are among the 10 nominees, along with captain Wes Morgan, tireless midfielder N'Golo Kante and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Claudio Ranieri's men were shock winners of the league crown – the club's first top-flight title in their 132-year history. The league's top goalscorer, Tottenham's Harry Kane, has also been nominated, as have team-mates Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld.

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil and West Ham's Dimitri Payet make up the 10.That means there was no room for Manchester City star Sergio Aguero, who like Vardy has scored 24 league goals this season.

Mahrez has scored 17 goals and created 11, leading to links to numerous clubs – including Barcelona.Trophy-lifter Morgan has been central to the defence that has helped Schmeichel keep an equal league-high 15 clean sheets.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who has enjoyed another excellent campaign, was also among those missing out on a spot.

Pochettino signs extended contract with Tottenham

    613011_heroa.jpg

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new contract extension which ties him to Tottenham until 2021, the club have confirmed.

The Argentinian head coach - who still had three years to run on his previous deal at White Hart Lane - has inked a five-year extension after the north London outfit rewarded him for inspiring Spurs' push for their first league title since 1961 this season.

Tottenham, who currently sit second and two points above rivals Arsenal, can record their most successive Premier League campaign since its inception next weekend when they face Newcastle and the former Southampton and Espanyol boss has been recognised for his work.

"I could not be happier to sign this new contract," Pochettino said.

"It was an easy decision for my coaching staff and I because we can feel the appreciation of everyone here. There is no better place to be right now.

"The supporters are unbelievable, we have assembled a great squad of players with huge potential that can get even better, while the facilities we have to work in are world-class.

"We also have an incredible new stadium to look forward to and now we are determined to build a side worthy of playing inside such an exciting new venue.

"We have enjoyed a great season and we believe this is just the beginning. We have a long-term project and huge belief that we can achieve something big here for the future.

"This club has all the ingredients to continue to challenge at the very top in the Premier League and in Europe and we want to be here to be a part of what I believe will be a special period in the club's history."

Pochettino has revolutionised Tottenham's fortunes since his switch from the Saints in May 2014, leading them to the cusp of the Champions League and also the League Cup final last year before taking them to another level this term.

The 44-year-old has been lauded for his use of young English players during his tenure in England and has aided the development and breakthrough of several talented prospects such as Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Dele Alli.

Recent rumours suggested Manchester United were interested in taking Pochettino on board in the summer and speculation was fuelled after he was spotted having lunch with former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

But Pochettino has now dismissed any possibility of a move away after committing his future to Spurs.

    OFFICIAL: Borussia Dortmund sign Dembele

    ousmane-dembele-cropped_qg68bkwnauyy1rksn428c7z2w.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of promising youngster Ousmane Dembele from Rennes for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old forward pens a contract with BVB until June 2021 and had been receiving interest from several of Europe's big hitters, with the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Bayern Munich among those reported to have been tracking his progress.

However, Dembele has opted to continue his promising development at Signal Iduna Park."Ousmane can play in almost every attacking position," Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told Dortmund's official website.

"I have nothing but respect when I see how many high-profile offers from all over Europe Ousmane has turned down and how he has stood firm about his commitment to BVB over such a long period of time."Dembele progressed through the youth ranks at Rennes and made his first-team debut for the club against Angers last November.

The France Under-21 international subsequently became a prominent figure in their starting XI and has scored 12 goals in 25 Ligue 1 appearances.Commenting on his move, Dembele added: "BVB showed a lot of interest in me right from an early stage and they have always kept close contact with me - this really impressed me.

"I am totally convinced of the Borussia sporting concept. I can hardly wait to play in the Bundesliga in front of more than 80,000 spectators at Signal Iduna Park and to walk onto the pitch in the Champions League with my new team-mates."

Dembele will face stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up at Dortmund, with head coach Thomas Tuchel already able to call on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Shinji Kagawa, Marco Reus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adrian Ramos and Christian Pulisic in attacking positions.

Benitez woes forgotten if Real win Champions League - Mourinho

    mourinho-cropped_pcgb24650sl81x0tplnjdzoig.jpg

Jose Mourinho says success for Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane in the Champions League would "gloss over" the club's season and make fans forget about Rafael Benitez's reign.

Barcelona are hot favourites to pip arch rivals Real to the La Liga title ahead of the final round of fixtures, while the Santiago Bernabeu outfit were expelled from the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player, Denis Cheryshev, against Cadiz in December. But Real have the chance to win an unprecedented 11th Champions League title when they face neighbours Atletico Madrid in Milan on May 28.

Should they emerge victorious, Mourinho believes the club's early-season problems under current Newcastle United boss Benitez – who was sacked in January – will be consigned to history.

"Zidane arrived late during the middle of the season but has been instrumental in transforming the dynamic at the club," Mourinho was quoted as saying by AS on his trip to Mexico for Friday's FIFA Congress.

"If Zidane wins the Champions League then everyone will forget about the problems that the club experienced pre-Christmas before the change of coach and the enduring memory will be that of an 11th European Cup win.

"Zizou has got his team to the Champions League final and for a team with an indifferent start that presents a massive opportunity to gloss over the season as a whole."It will be a final between two sides who know each other very well, Madrid and Atletico. I think we are in for an excellent game."

Mourinho managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning one league title and a Copa del Rey medal.

    OFFICIAL: Everton sack Martinez

    3157062_heroa.jpg

Everton have confirmed manager Roberto Martinez has "left his position" at the club as a dismal Premier League campaign nears its end.

The Spaniard leaves Everton on the back of a poor run of just one win in their last 10 league games, with the club currently sitting 12th in the table with one match to go.

Martinez joined the Toffees in 2013 and guided them to a record Premier League points haul (72) and fifth place in his first season in charge and the club have thanked him for his efforts on Merseyside.

"Everton Football Club regrets to announce that Roberto Martinez has left his position as first team manager with immediate effect," the club confirmed in a statement.

"The chairman and the board of directors would like to place on record their thanks for the dedication and commitment Roberto has shown during his three seasons with the club. Roberto has been a great ambassador for the club, conducting himself, at all times, with the utmost integrity and dignity."He secured the club its highest ever Premier League points total, a place in the last 16 of the Europa League and appearances in both domestic cup semi-finals.

"He has also played a key role in the development of several young players, managing their progression to the Everton first team and international honours."
Everton finished 11th in the top flight last season and look set to finish in the bottom half for the second campaign in a row having produced the worst league home record in their history under Martinez's stewardship this term.

The Merseysiders, who reached the League Cup and FA Cup semi-finals this season, have only managed to win 10 league matches in 2015-16 and six have come against the bottom five teams in the table.A section of Everton's fanbase stayed behind after the 2-1 win over Bournemouth last month to voice their anger towards Martinez.

Everton will now begin the hunt for Martinez's successor with Frank de Boer, who left Ajax this week after six years, and Southampton's Ronald Koeman installed as early favourites for the post, according to several national bookmakers.

Klopp warns Liverpool players to prepare for gruelling pre-season

    hd-jurgen-klopp-southampton-liverpool-20032016_14j86x9olwqob1smxdxmj5khwy.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has warned his Liverpool players to be prepared for one of the most demanding pre-seasons of their footballing career. Liverpool have two games left in the season, a final-day Premier League clash against West Brom before the Europa League decider against Sevilla in Basle.

However, a large majority of the Liverpool squad will go straight into camp with their respective national teams, with Euro 2016 and Copa America tournaments to come in June.

The extended season means many players will not have more than two weeks holiday before re-joining Klopp at Melwood for the start of pre-season. And the German manager warned his players they cannot be expecting a typical end-of-season vacation.

"The problem with pre-season is that the first three weeks we have 15 players who will have been away at the Euros and we also have to see how the squad is changing," Klopp said.

"On another planet we would have six weeks together because in this league it is the only time that you can train. In all of the [pre-season] games we will play out full training."So if we play our best in pre-season then I've done something completely wrong. It's another session, it's not about beating our opponents. I don't care about how big the opponent.

"We have to do a lot to create a base for one year. We have a special plan of what we want to do with the boys. They cannot go home now when they are off."Nearly all of them have national team games now but you cannot have six weeks off."

'Will I stay at Roma? You never know...' - Pjanic fuels transfer rumours

    2762602_heroa.jpg

Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic says he is happy with life in the Italian capital but made no guarantees about his future at the club.

The Bosnia international has 10 goals in 32 league appearances this season and has been a crucial part of a Roma side that sits third in the Serie A table with one game left to play.

But Pjanic, 26, is uncertain of his future at the club as the likes of Juventus, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with a move for the attacking midfielder in the coming transfer window."Will I stay at Roma? In football you never know, but I have a two-year contract," he told Roma TV.

"I feel very well [at Roma]. I am very well acclimatised, I love this city and this club and I hope one day I can win titles here."Pjanic also praised Roma veteran Francesco Totti, saying: "Totti is a great captain and a great person.

"He is an extraordinary player, he taught me so much. It is a great pleasure to play with him."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has confirmed he will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

Ibrahimovic told Goal that he was yet to make a decision on his future earlier this week, but confirmed he was in talks with a host of other clubs.

And now the 34-year-old Sweden striker has taken to Facebook ahead of Saturday's Ligue 1 finale with Nantes to announce: "My last game at Parc des Princes. I came like a king, left like a legend."Ibrahimovic, revealed by Forbes this week as the world's third highest earning footballer, has been with PSG since 2012 and this year won his fourth Ligue 1 title.

He has enjoyed his most prolific campaign, scoring 36 top-flight goals, but Champions League glory eluded him again as Laurent Blanc's men were beaten by Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

The news will put a host of Europe's top clubs on high alert, with Manchester United, former clubs Inter and AC Milan and MLS outfit LA Galaxy having been linked with a swoop.

Ibrahimovic will feature at Euro 2016 after helping his country to the finals with a virtuoso display in the play-offs, when he scored three of Sweden's four goals in the 4-3 aggregate triumph over Denmark. His list of honours over a sparkling career includes league titles in four different countries.

:cool:‘I came like a king, I leave like a legend’ - Ibrahimovic issues statement after Paris Saint-Germain exit

    2414282_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic claims he will leave Paris Saint-Germain “like a legend” after confirming he will not be renewing his contract at the club.

The 34-year-old’s deal with PSG expires at the end of the season, although he has yet to reveal his next destination.

The Sweden international has spent four seasons in France, winning Ligue 1 in each campaign, the Coupe de la Ligue three times and also the Coupe de France last year.

And in a statement following his decision to leave in the summer, Ibrahimovic says he has “loved” his time with the capital club and is proud to have played a key role in them becoming an emerging force in Europe.

“I am very proud of the last four years,” Ibrahimovic said.

“I loved every day I spent here. The Paris Saint-Germain has become a STAR club in the world and I played a key role moving it forward.

“It is now the right time for me to take a different path. I would like to thank my team mates, the technical staff and all the people in the club.

    Chelsea offer Terry one-year contract

Chelsea have confirmed club captain John Terry has been offered a new one-year contract, though no agreement has been reached.

The centre-back revealed in January that he could leave the Blues, having received no communication over a new contract, and has been expected to bring an end to a 21-year association with the west London side.

However, Chelsea maintained that the former England captain's future had not been decided and have moved to offer him a new deal, revealing the news in Guus Hiddink's press conference on Friday.

And interim coach Hiddink, who said this week that Terry is good enough to remain at the club, says he believes the decision to offer him a new deal is the right one.

"Ex-players are having a lot of say in the culture of a club," the Dutchman said. "They like to come back in whatever task they can do - I am in favour of that.

"It is nice to have players who are big personalities. When things are clear, you will see.

"To spend 20 or 21 years at a club is huge. This is how they become legends, you must cherish them."

The 35-year-old was sent off for the second time this season in Saturday's defeat to Sunderland, meaning he would miss out on saying farewell to Chelsea fans with a two-game suspension.

And while the defender has not yet signed extended terms, he is expected to commit to a further year at least, having admitted on Monday that he would like to spend a few more years at Stamford Bridge.

Vardy named Premier League Player of the Season

    3130432_heroa.jpg

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has been named the Premier League's Player of the Season following his remarkable campaign for the Foxes.

The Foxes striker has beaten off competition from the likes of his Foxes team-mates Riyad Mahrez, Wes Morgan, N'Golo Kante and Kasper Schmeichel, along with Tottenham trio Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld to win the award.

Vardy has scored 24 goals thus far this season, as Claudio Ranieri's men romped to the Premier League title, having been battling relegation last term.

The Foxes have lost just three games all season and sit 10 points clear of second-placed Tottenham ahead of the final game of the season.

Vardy has also won six England caps this season, scoring against both Germany and the Netherlands, and is poised to travel to Euro 2016 this summer with the Three Lions.

Mesut Ozil of Arsenal and West Ham's Dimitri Payet were also nominated for the award after shining for their respective clubs, but they too fell behind Vardy after his scoring exploits this term.
