Hoeness: Low right to include Schweinsteiger in Germany squad

    bastian-schweinsteiger-cropped_8onzlrdgs2hg1bmch3b9g9ufb.jpg

Dieter Hoeness believes Germany head coach Joachim Low made the right decision naming Bastian Schweinsteiger in his provisional squad for Euro 2016.

Eyebrows were raised in some quarters when Germany captain Schweinsteiger was included in Low's initial 27-man party for the tournament on Tuesday, despite the fact he has made just one Premier League appearance for Manchester United since January due to two knee injuries.

Low is eager to give Schweinsteiger the chance to prove his fitness before he trims down his selection, with ex-Bayern Munich and West Germany forward Hoeness backing the World Cup-winning midfielder to help youngsters such as Julian Weigl and Leroy Sane settle in the squad.Hoeness told Omnisport: "Everyone knows it's not about the quantity of individual players, but about the team. The team makes the difference and also the success.

"The balance needs to be right, that's why Bastian Schweinsteiger was selected. And I am pretty sure he will be in the squad after the final decision - if it's foreseeable that he can help the team.

"He needs to be at least fit enough to help the team. It's important to have experienced players in your team, but also you should take young players with you who can put some pressure on the older ones, who force the experienced to play their best."The balance in the squad is the reason for success in the end. Not just the individual players."

Low was boosted by the return of Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng after over three months out with a groin problem last month and Hoeness feels the defender's central-defensive partnership with Mats Hummels could be vital to Germany's chances of adding European Championship glory to their 2014 World Cup win.The 63-year-old also spoke highly of Germany's wealth of attacking talent.

"I think it's important that Jerome Boateng was fit in time for the European
Championship. With Hummels and Boateng we have one of the world's best defensive duos," Hoeness added.

"Sure, someone like Thomas Muller is extremely important for the team, but also a couple of other players - Ozil, if he's in his best form, but also Toni Kroos."Thank God we not only have a great team but also good individual players, who can decide games on their own. We have plenty of them."

Atletico Madrid have confirmed that Saul Niguez has agreed terms on a new contract at the Vicente Calderon until 2021.Wednesday's announcement means Saul, who came through the ranks at Atletico, has extended his previous deal by a further 12 months.

Saul made his debut for the club in a Europa League clash with Besiktas in March 2012, before going on loan to Rayo Vallecano for the 2013-14 campaign.

Terry signs new one-year Chelsea deal

    2695782_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have confirmed captain John Terry has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

The 35-year-old has agreed to fresh terms following discussions between the defender, club owner Roman Abramovich and incoming boss Antonio Conte, the Blues have revealed.

Terry's new contract will take him into his 22nd season with Chelsea and he has expressed his delight at finally putting the speculation surrounding his future to bed.

He told the club's official website: "I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through.

"I am looking forward to next season under the new manager and hopefully we can make it a successful one.

"Also, a special mention to the fans for their continued support. You’re the best in the world."

Terry announced in February that Chelsea had not offered him a new contract and therefore looked destined to leave in the summer ahead of Conte's arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Supporters have since urged the club to keep Terry in west London in the closing weeks of the season, resulting in talks starting between the two parties over a new contract in May.

Terry, who had been linked with Manchester United prior to extending his stay at Chelsea, joined the club aged 14 and has made 703 first-team appearances to date.

Chairman Bruce Buck added: “We are delighted John will spend another year at the club. He has been the leader of the Chelsea squad throughout the most successful period in our history.

“He recently reached the 700-appearance mark, which is testament to his professionalism and dedication as well as his undoubted talent.”

PSG will struggle to replace Ibrahimovic, says Pires

    ibrahimovic-cropped_3i9ll2ydnspz135kj2pi6pe2e.jpg

Robert Pires believes Paris Saint-Germain will have a tough task to find a suitable replacement for the departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 34-year-old striker – whose contract expires this summer - has confirmed he will leave the club after Saturday's Coupe de France final against Marseille and received a fond farewell after scoring twice at his last Parc des Princes appearance against Nantes last weekend.

Pires feels Ibrahimovic's impact with PSG was one that went beyond scoring goals, even if there were plenty of them – he has 48 to his name in all competitions this season. And the Arsenal icon does not envy PSG's task in replacing a player he thinks will leave an "empty space".

“He will leave an empty space at PSG because he left his mark since coming to the club with what he did, what he said and the goals scored," Pires told Omnisport."Now the PSG board will have to think about who will replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I think it will be very difficult. I have no idea."

Offering his own take on who PSG should look to replace him with, Pires suggested the targeting of stars from two of Europe's top clubs in Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

"I thought Robert Lewandowski but he extended his contract with Bayern," he said, although the Poland international's deal is yet to be officially confirmed."It could be Neymar but they will have to spend a lot of money for him."

Varane wants more big-game experience at Real Madrid

    raphaelvarane-cropped_jq99int84f8p19gx5cry3kstx.jpg

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has spoken of his disappointment at his minimal role in the club's run to the Champions League final.

The France international started five of Madrid's six group games, as well as the 2-0 win over Roma in the last-16 first leg.But Varane's inclusion in the remaining games was limited to a sole appearance as a stoppage-time substitute in the 3-0 quarter-final second-leg win over Wolfsburg.

Madrid subsequently booked their place in the final against city rivals Atletico by seeing off Manchester City in the semis, but with Sergio Ramos and Pepe the established central defensive partnership, Varane looks likely to be watching on from the bench again at San Siro.

"Up until November I played practically every match," he told AFP. "It's also fair to say that I did make a few mistakes which I don't normally make."But looking back over the season as a whole, there's no point in focusing on that - it's outweighed by the positive things which happened.

"It's true that I would have liked to have been a part of the more decisive games at the end of the season - especially in the Champions League."After five years at Real Madrid, I hope I am able to overcome any kind of obstacle. I feel I'm at a crucial point in my career.

"I think all players need to feel as though they are developing - it's important to feel you are making progress and that's something I aim to do every day. I am aware of what qualities I have and what I am capable of."

Following the Champions League showdown, Varane will turn his focus to clinching Euro 2016 glory on home soil with France."We are capable of beating anyone and competing with the best," he said. "We are going to prepare well for the tournament.

"We've got all we need to go into the Euros in good shape. Experiencing the Euros in France is a great motivation for us. And I hope I can give the best of myself."

    Lerner agrees Aston Villa sale

    villa-park-cropped_137jjjlhxevcd12rw95h6mfkky.jpg

Aston Villa have announced owner Randy Lerner has agreed a deal to sell the club to Dr Tony Jiantong Xia's Recon Group.

The Birmingham side endured a wretched 2015-16 season, dropping to the Championship after taking just 17 points from 38 games this year. And the Villains have confirmed that the US businessman has relinquished his holding at the club to Chinese national Xia, pending Premier League approval.

"Aston Villa Football Club is pleased to announce that an agreement has been signed today for the sale of 100% ownership by Randy Lerner to Recon Group owned by Dr Tony Jiantong Xia subject to the approval of the Premier League and the Football League," the club confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday.

"Once those approvals have been granted and the new board members approved under the fit & proper rules of both leagues, Dr Xia will become Chairman of Aston Villa. The Club will announce the appointment of a new manager shortly.

"Randy Lerner has sought the right new owner for Aston Villa who would take great care of the Club and restore its fortunes. He believes that Tony Xia is an excellent choice.

Recon Group is Dr Xia's privately owned holding company that owns the controlling interest in five publicly listed companies on the Hong Kong and Chinese stock exchanges and many other private companies employing 35,000 people in 75 countries."Villa added that Xia aimed to increase the club's stature in his native country, while assuring the businessman was no stranger to football.

"Dr Xia played football as a striker until he finished at college and football has remained his passion. Dr Xia decided to buy an iconic football Club in England as the cornerstone of his Sports, Leisure and Tourism Division. He became a fan of Aston Villa many years ago and is delighted at the opportunity to become the new owner," the club said.

"Dr Xia's immediate objective is to return Aston Villa to the Premier League and then to have the Club finish in the top six, bringing European football back to Villa Park. He plans to make Aston Villa the most famous football Club in China with a huge fan base."

Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla: Coke double secures a Europa League three-peat

    europa-league-final-liverpool-sevilla-basel_kyjwynhn4tyszrkypnig4fwm.jpg

Sevilla staged a remarkable second half comeback to blow Liverpool out of the water and claim their third successive Europa League, as Coke netted twice to seal a 3-1 victory in Basel.

Unai Emery's men, outplayed in the first half, responded with an emphatic second 45 minutes to leave Liverpool reeling and condemn Jurgen Klopp to a fifth-straight defeat in a major final.

Liverpool, who had dispatched Villarreal so impressively in the second leg of the semi-final, were the better side in the first half and deservedly took the lead when Daniel Sturridge curled in a superb finish from the edge of the area.

But Sevilla, who came from behind to beat Dnipro in last year's final, responded seconds after half-time with Kevin Gameiro's 29th goal of the season, before Coke capped a fine team move to put the holders ahead.

Klopp, whose side also lost the League Cup final to Manchester City in February, introduced Divock Origi in a bid to find a response but Coke struck a crucial blow 20 minutes from time, steering the ball beyond Simon Mignolet from close range despite Liverpool's appeals for offside.

Liverpool produced a memorable comeback against AC Milan to win their last European trophy in 2005, but there was to be no repeat of those Istanbul heroics as Sevilla became the first team to win Europe's secondary competition three years running and ensured a spot in next season's Champions League.

Sevilla started with more control in a cagey opening 10 minutes, although Emre Can brought the first save of the match out of David Soria with a low effort from the edge of the area.

Daniel Carrico made a timely intervention to hook Sturridge's header off the line as Liverpool began to look threatening on the break, and Roberto Firmino felt he should have earned a penalty when he diverted the ball into the arm of the Sevilla centre-back.

Gameiro got his first sight of goal, hooking a bicycle kick narrowly wide of the near post following a corner, but Sturridge produced a moment of magic to open the scoring 10 minutes before the break.Philippe Coutinho found Sturridge on the edge of the area and the England striker bent a sublime finish beyond Soria with the outside of his left foot.

Lovren thought he had made it 2-0 with a towering header four minutes later, but the assistant referee flagged for offside after Sturridge had stuck out a foot to intercept the ball.

The Liga side would have been glad to go into the break just a goal behind but they produced a fine response just 17 seconds into the second half. Mariano skipped easily past the challenge of former Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno and squared across goal for Gameiro, who tapped into an unguarded net.

Sevilla, suddenly buoyant, missed two great chances to take the lead through Gameiro before the hour mark. The Frenchman was first denied by a fine block tackle from Kolo Toure after racing in behind the Liverpool back line, before he scuffed a volley straight at Mignolet after Steven N'Zonzi's header found him completely unmarked six yards out.Yet just as Sevilla looked as though they might rue those misses, Coke stepped up to put his side in control. A fine passing move involving Ever Banega and Vitolo saw Sevilla slice through the heart of Liverpool's midfield, and when the ball broke to Coke, he rifled a first-time shot into Mignolet's bottom-right corner.

And Coke put the holders on the brink of an historic win six minutes later, squeezing a shot in off Mignolet from the right of the six-yard box after the ball had deflected off Coutinho and into the Sevilla captain's path.

Liverpool pushed for a repeat of the dramatic comeback which saw them oust Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals, but Sevilla held on to lift the trophy in front of their vociferous supporters.

'Sign a f***ing left-back!' - Carragher rages at Moreno performace

    3190412_heroa.jpg

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit out at Alberto Moreno and urged the club to sign a "new f***ing left-back" after the Spaniard's performance in the Europa League final against Sevilla.

Moreno was at fault for Kevin Gameiro's equaliser moments into the second half in Basel and struggled throughout versus his former side as they ran out 3-1 winners.

And Carragher - who was pictured in Switzerland earlier in the day - took to Twitter to lambast the full-back and urge both Jurgen Klopp and the club's transfer committee to find a replacement this summer.

"Jurgen, transfer committee, anyone sign a f***ing left back," the ex-England international wrote at full-time, with Sevilla securing a third-straight Europa League title.

'Ibrahimovic will be missed by Paris Saint-Germain - he can still win games by himself'

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-paris-sg-nantes-ligue-1-14052016_1997nxaidh2jc1h02yzwjbsggn.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's still has the potential to win games by himself, according to Yohan Cabaye. The 34-year-old will leave Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer this summer but claims that he already knows his next destination.

Cabaye, who won the treble alongside Ibrahimovic at PSG last season, believes his former team-mate can still be a influence at the top clubs in Europe."Zlatan left PSG, it's a big miss for the club, a big miss for the French Ligue 1 as well," said Cabaye.

"He's an amazing player. Crazy, amazing. His technique is unbelievable, he scores every weekend almost, and he can win the game just by himself."The 30-year-old also confirmed that he too had plenty of options after deciding to leave PSG last summer.

"Yes, I had [other offers than Crystal Palace], I prefer to keep it secret and not say other clubs and I am here today and I am just ready to play the FA Cup final and focus on it and the whole week, will be a great week,” said the France international.

"Everyone has an opinion – I am aware of this. For me the most important thing is the pitch. The pitch tells the truth every time. My target was to enjoy my football and to be happy."Cabaye is targeting his first trophy in English football as Crystal Palace meet Manchester United in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Both of the FA Cup finalists will be disappointed with their league finishes as Palace ended the campaign in 15th after a good start saw them in the European places in the first half of the season.

Meanwhile Manchester United's fifth place finish means that they are under increased pressure to beat Palace and secure a place in the Europa League, and Cabaye admitted he sent a message to his fellow France internationals Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin.

"Just before the semi we played against them, and at the end we said 'Yeah, hopefully we will see you in the final’,” he said. “Yes, of course [they're good friends]."

'Moreno cost Liverpool' - Former Anfield stars Owen and McManaman take aim

    alberto-moreno-villarreal-liverpool-uefa-europa-league-28042016_vln82ytymn6t1esoimgbea5ok.jpg

Former Liverpool greats Michael Owen and Steve McManaman have hit out at left-back Alberto Moreno following his calamitous display in Wednesday's 3-1 Europa League final loss to Sevilla.Daniel Sturridge had put Jurgen Klopp's side into the lead and on course to their first piece of silverware under the German.

But Moreno's high-profile errors in Kevin Gameiro's equaliser right after half-time, followed by his part in allowing Coke to net a double subsequently, eventually saw the Reds overcome in Basel.

And Owen and McManaman were left with no doubt as to who was ultimately the biggest culprit in the defeat, pinning the blame squarly on the former Sevilla defender.

"At this level, when you're playing against top sides in Europe, you can't be carrying anyone, you can't have anybody making any little mistakes, let alone three or four in one half, and Moreno cost Liverpool tonight," the former said on BT Sport.

"No dressing it up, he cost them the game."McManaman waded in further, questioning the way the Spaniard was constantly caught out at the back: "[Moreno showed] Just a real lack of judgement, incredibly sloppy play who had an awful second half.

"He just went wandering at times. He wants to go forward which is great, but he's a left-back. His principal job is to defend. Get the ball, defend, defend well, clear your lines, communicate and be in the right position."
