USA 1-0 Paraguay: Clint Dempsey sends hosts into Copa America quarterfinals

    clint-dempsey-victor-ayala-usa-paraguay-copa-america-06112016_1obxpl9rgiebczgwfobh9zu41.jpg

The United States booked its spot in the Copa America Centenario quarterfinals, holding on for a 1-0 win over Paraguay.A first-half goal from Clint Dempsey saw the U.S. secure a crucial three points in Group A, sealing a place in the last eight.

DeAndre Yedlin was sent off early in the second half to make it tricky for his team, but they managed to hold on at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Gyasi Zardes set up Dempsey with a good cross in the 27th minute for the game's only goal as the U.S. moved onto six points.

A pair of bookings in a matter of minutes saw Yedlin sent off, but Paraguay was unable to make the most of its numerical advantage.Paraguay struggled to break down the Copa hosts in the second half and bowed out in the group stage for the first time since 2001.

Jurgen Klinsmann stuck with the same starting lineup again after his side's 4-0 thrashing of Costa Rica last time out.Paraguay made four changes, with the suspended Oscar Romero and injured Edgar Benitez among those making way, while Victor Ayala and Fabian Balbuena started.

After Fabian Johnson tested Justo Villar with a strike, the U.S. needed some excellent defending from John Brooks to deny Paraguay.A three-on-one counterattack appeared certain to finish with a goal until Brooks' intervention.

Miguel Almiron was played in down the left and had options inside, but Brooks cut it out when the midfielder perhaps should have shot.Dempsey fired a free kick from just outside the area over the bar soon after, yet he found the opener in the 27th minute.

Zardes broke down the left and delayed crossing before picking out Dempsey in the center of the area to put away the opener.Paraguay should have been level in the final minute of the half, but Brad Guzan got down low to deny Dario Lezcano in a one-on-one from an angle.

Things were made far more difficult for the USA just three minutes into the second half.Yedlin picked up two bookings in a matter of minutes, the second for a poor sliding challenge from behind on Miguel Samudio.

Zardes saw an excellent opportunity go begging on the break, but it was Paraguay that was the more dangerous side.Guzan was needed to keep the U.S. ahead in the 82nd minute as he made a double save.

Substitute Jorge Benitez forced him into the initial one before he also denied Almiron from an angle on the rebound as the USA held on.

Colombia 2-3 Costa Rica: Pekerman lineup changes costly in Copa America

    carlos-sanchez-johan-venegas-colombia-costa-rica-06112016_kd0ufde338we1x08g1fbu25lm.jpg

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman might be wondering if 10 changes was a few too many after his team went down 3-2 against Costa Rica in their final Copa America Centenario group game.

Pekerman and Co. looked to be in control of the group after seeing off the United States and Paraguay ahead of their final group game against Costa Rica, but their complacency was punished as they finished behind the hosts in disappointing circumstances, setting up a potential quarterfinal clash with Brazil in the process.
Celso Borges and Johan Venegas were in fine form as the eliminated Costa Ricans finished their tournament in style.

Venegas scored after just two minutes when he was picked out brilliantly by Borges before dispatching a 20-yard curler that left Colombia goalkeeper Robinson Zapata clutching at thin air, before fullback Frank Fabra produced a moment of individual brilliance to level the scoring with a fine solo goal.

Fabra went from hero to villain when he turned a Venegas cross into his own net with 10 minutes to play in the first half, before Borges added another with a tidy goal after 58 minutes, although a Marlos Moreno effort made for a nervous finish.

With qualification already secured, Pekerman rested his stars as he made 10 changes to the starting lineup that beat Paraguay with midfielder Sebastian Perez the only player remaining, but he came to rue such extensive changes.

Costa Rica, having already been eliminated following the United States' 1-0 win over the Paraguayans earlier on Saturday, had Arsenal's Joel Campbell named among the substitutes with Sporting CP's Bryan Ruiz chosen to lead the line.

Venegas opened the scoring with a superb strike from 20 yards after brilliantly bringing down a cross-field pass from Borges, beating the offside trap and bearing down on goal.

His progress was hindered by the Colombia defense, which forced Venegas to put his foot on the ball and turn out, but that did not stop him from scoring as he knocked the ball a yard ahead of him and dispatched a brilliant finish from distance that found the far top corner.

However, their advantage did not last long as Fabra embarked on a mazy run starting on the left wing and finishing with a trail of Costa Rica defenders in his wake before slotting the ball under Patrick Pemberton.

He followed the sublime with the calamitous when his disastrous own goal put Costa Rica back into the lead when he bundled Venegas' cross into his own net at the far post.

Pekerman turned to James Rodriguez at halftime as he hoped to wrestle back control of the game and avoid a defeat that could yet see them facing off against Brazil in the quarterfinals.

But his gamble did not pay off as Borges made it 3-1 just before the hour-mark when he finished off a lovely overlapping run and cross from substitute Bryan Oviedo.

Substitute Juan Cuadrado set up Moreno for Colombia's second as they chased a crucial equalizer but they could not find it as Pekerman was left to rue his selection.

Casillas: I will retire when Buffon does

Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas says he will not retire until Italy counterpart Gianluigi Buffon calls time on his illustrious career.

Juventus legend Buffon signed an extension to his contract in May, ensuring he will remain with the Serie A champions until the end of the 2017-18 season. The 38-year-old could subsequently keep playing for the Italian giants beyond his 40th birthday.

Casillas, three years Buffon's junior, has an option to extend his Porto contract through to 2018 and has no plans to hang up his gloves before his counterpart.

"When he retires, I will too," Casillas, who has won two European Championship medals and a World Cup with Spain, told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He just signed a new deal and that makes me happy because that means I will too."When we call it quits we'll set up a nice match between my friends and his friends."

Casillas faces competition from David de Gea to claim the gloves for Spain's Euro 2016 opener against Czech Republic on Monday, with the defending champions looking to win the title for a third straight edition."The keeper believes the task will be more difficult this year, with France, Belgium and Germany among the frontrunners," he added.

"It will be more difficult than four years ago. France are good, Belgium are strong and then Germany are world champions. Italy and Portugal are always dangerous."

Fabregas: Germany & Italy copied Spain in search for success

Cesc Fabregas has claimed Spain 's rivals at Euro 2016 have copied the holders' style in the search for success.

La Roja head into their opener against against Czech Republic at the Stadium Municipal in Toulouse among the favourites to lift the crown on July 10, having won the previous two tournaments.

Fabregas feels Spain's short passing and possession-based approach has been emulated by the likes of world champions Germany and new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte's Italy."I have no doubt about it [Spain's influence]." Fabregas told Goal at a Q&A during Puma's #choosetricks boot launch in London.

"Since 2006-08 when we started playing this kind of football, I don’t remember seeing so many teams trying to play or trying to adapt their system to what we were used to do.

"If you play the same way and you don’t win no one will copy you, but if you win and you have success then you will see people trying to copy your tactics or the way you are playing. Of course there was Germany or even Italy under Conte."

The Azzurri boss is charged with getting Chelsea back to the top of English football after a disastrous season saw the club record a worst ever defence of a Premier League title, with Fabregas previously telling Goal that he forgot how to play football .

Fabregas is aiming to return to Stamford Bridge with another European Championships winners' medal, but dismissed Spain's pre-tournament favourites tag."We don’t really mind if we are favourites or not, at the end of the day the best team will be the ones who have the fittest players that get there in the best moment of the season," he said.

"Sometimes you have a fantastic team but, for whatever reason, you get there and you are a little bit more tired or you have lost with your club and you are a little bit down. For so many reasons things could change from good to bad in one second.

"You just have to go there with the hunger and passion we have been playing with since 2006. From there we will try to do our best and make sure we give the country something to be proud of.

"In 2008, we were going there like we didn’t even exist. No one believed in us and we won. We were by far the best team. It will be a tough Euros, I don’t know who is going to win but we will try to be there until the end."

Alves will do well at Juventus - Dunga

    danialves-cropped_cgj9g8sr404j1anhn33n2v8bs.jpg

Brazil coach Dunga has backed Dani Alves to succeed at Juventus if he makes the switch to Italy.

As revealed by Goal last month, Alves will end his eight-year association with Barcelona to join the Serie A champions and he has since announced he is set to move to Turin.

The right-back is in the United States with the Brazil squad for the Copa America Centenario and the national team boss believes such a move would be good for the 33-year-old.

"Italian football is very tactical, but also very beautiful," said Dunga."With Dani Alves' mentality, he will certainly do very well at Juventus."He is a player accustomed to winning and Juventus will make a strong team to win the Champions League because the Italians demand it."

Alves will be back in action for Brazil at Copa America on Sunday when the Selecao meet Peru in their final match of Group B.

Ramos: Spain have to reinvent themselves

Sergio Ramos says Spain's success over the last eight years has forced them to look at reinventing themselves as they look to claim a third consecutive European title.Luis Aragones guided Spain to the trophy at Euro 2008, with Vicente del Bosque adding the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 triumphs.

It formed a glorious period for the Iberian nation marked by a possession-based style that garnered plaudits from across the globe.

La Roja are one of the favourites to win Euro 2016, despite crashing out at the group stages of the 2014 World Cup.

And Ramos believes other teams have improved in their ability to counter Spain's tactics, and it has forced them to develop."It's clear that all the squads are more motivated when they face us," he told Marca.

"We are the reigning European champions and we've also been world champions.
"We have a good history and everyone wants to beat us."Our style of play is very characteristic and everyone has been studying it thoroughly so we have to reinvent ourselves to carry on fighting to achieve the highest levels of success."

Spain begin their title defence against Czech Republic in Toulouse on Monday and Ramos is hopeful of a third straight triumph, but acknowledged there will be competition from France, Germany and England.

"We're ambitious certainly. We want to win it and we'll try but we know there's a lot of competition," the Real Madrid captain added."There are more teams than ever and many top-quality squads.

"The hosts France, Germany, England, [are among the favourites] as usual.
"You can expect a squad who are going to give everything on the pitch to make our country proud, hopefully."

Turkey 0-1 Croatia: Modric stunner seals win

A superb volley from Luka Modric secured a 1-0 win for Croatia over Turkey as Group D of Euro 2016 got under way at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.

The midfielder was part of the Real Madrid side that lifted the Champions League trophy late last month, and a celebratory couple of weeks continued with his stunning first-half winner in Paris.

In Saturday's media conference, Croatia coach Ante Cacic insisted his team were about more than just Modric and midfield counterpart Ivan Rakitic, highlighting the depth in quality throughout his squad.

But with four minutes to go until the interval, it was indeed Modric who produced a supremely difficult piece of technical skill, volleying a dropping ball beyond Volkan Babacan from distance to spark wild celebrations among Croatia players and fans alike.

Turkey rarely threatened an equaliser, and in truth it was Croatia who looked the more likely to extend their advantage - captain Darijo Srna and Ivan Perisic both striking the woodwork in the second period.

The result means Croatia have now won 10 and drawn one of the 11 matches in which Modric has scored, as Cacic's side put the pressure on double defending champions Spain and Czech Republic to respond when they meet in Toulouse on Monday.

A cagey opening brought little by the way of goalmouth action, until Marcelo Brozovic was off target with two headers in quick succession midway through the half.Croatia continued to grow into the contest and forced the first save of note in the 28th minute when Babacan held Milan Badelj's volley from the edge of the box.

But it was Turkey who ought to have gone in front a minute later when Ozan Tufan headed Gokhan Gonul's inviting cross straight at Danijel Subasic from six yards.
And, with half-time approaching, Croatia got themselves in front courtesy of Modric's moment of magic.

The Madrid midfielder ran onto the ball, which was dropping from high in the sky following a half-clearance, and smashed a first-time volley into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards.Croatia were unfortunate not to double their lead in the 52nd minute as Srna rattled the crossbar with a free-kick that left Babacan motionless.

Srna was cursing his luck on that occasion, but the Croatia skipper was wasteful shortly afterwards, lashing wide of goal after Babacan parried Perisic's cross into his path.

Brozovic whistled a volley narrowly over as Croatia continued to threaten a second, but they were denied by the frame of the goal once more when Perisic's header from Mario Mandzukic's delivery glanced off the bar.

In the final 10 minutes, Babacan saved from Brozovic and Perisic either side of Subasic's routine stop from Caner Erkin's free-kick at the other end as Modric's moment of quality ultimately proved decisive.

Modric: Croatia played like a big national team

Luka Modric says Croatia's players know how good they are and feels their play was like that of a top nation after kicking off Euro 2016 with a 1-0 win over Turkey at Parc des Princes.

The Real Madrid midfielder's stunning volley in the 41st minute proved decisive for Ante Cacic's men, although the margin of victory could have been greater, with Darijo Srna and Ivan Perisic both hitting the woodwork.

Ahead of the match, Modric insisted Croatia had to target a deep run in the tournament and the 30-year-old feels the impressive start against Turkey is only the first step."We are happy with our performance as a team in a very difficult game," he told HTV.

"Everyone who watched us can be happy. We are aware of our quality, but it is only the beginning - this is an important first step. "We could have scored two or three more goals and this gives us confidence. We played better than Turkey."

Modric added at his post-match press conference: "We stood on the pitch really tough and played like a big national team. I think we are a big national team.

"My goal? It came to me and I hit it with a volley! I kicked the ball in a perfect way and, thank God, I scored. I am really happy about this goal but I am even more happy about our victory and the three points."It was important not just to keep a 1-0 lead, but to continue in the second half. The fans were great and they pushed us when we got tired."

Modric's team-mate Ivan Rakitic was similarly impressed by Croatia's performance and relished the opportunity to play against his Barcelona colleague Arda Turan. He said: "I played against Arda, my brother, and it was a great pleasure to play against him.

"We played well. Again it was a difficult game as it was in all our games against Turkey in the past. "Our matches are always battles - Vedran Corluka was hit in a head, Perisic got cramp - it was hard. I have all the respect for Turkey but I think we played better.

"We were good. We spoke before the match when we saw the stadium said, 'If we don't fight here, with all this support, we were better not coming'."

Ramos: De Gea controversy has not damaged Spain's spirit

Sergio Ramos has assured Spain supporters that the squad is fully united as they prepare to defend their European Championship crown.

Spain, champions in 2008 and 2012, have been rocked by allegations of a sex scandal involving goalkeeper David de Gea - claims the Manchester United man has strenuously denied - while there remains doubts as to the sincerity of the relationship between players from arch-rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.

But Madrid skipper Ramos, who will lead Spain out at the Stade de Toulouse if De Gea is preferred to captain Iker Casillas, insists everyone is pulling in the right direction.

He said of De Gea: "It wasn't a very good piece of news to receive. But when you're with a team-mate, he has the whole support of the group."We're not going to say anything more about it. We are excited for the championship to begin and we are going to do the best we can.

"I don't think the controversy has changed anything. We had a good atmosphere in the squad and we still have a good atmosphere. We are all here to support each other. Now there is more focus on that and the group is behind a player who is going through an unpleasant moment."

As for the persistent suggestions of friction due to club squabbles, Ramos added: "During the season everyone is with their club and there is a lot of excitement when we come together in the national team.

"There is a fusion. It doesn't matter which team you come from. We are here for the same objective, the country unites us and the club badges don't matter, we are only playing for the crest of the national team."

Spain flopped horribly at the World Cup two years ago, making a group-stage exit. Since then midfield mainstays Xavi and Xabi Alonso have retired from international football while the likes of Fernando Torres and David Villa were not picked.

Despite that the likes of Casillas, Gerard Pique, Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta and David Silva remain, and Ramos is pleased coach Vicente del Bosque has retained a sense of continuity in the squad. He said: "There are not big changes, there is a team and players with a lot of qualities.

"The new players have integrated really well and I think we can continue to shine, maybe not at the same level as before but at a very high level."

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland: Milik seals win as Kaputska breaks out

A second-half goal from Arkadiusz Milik proved enough for Poland to clinch a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in their Euro 2016 Group C opener on Sunday.

Milik's 51st-minute strike from the edge of the penalty area secured Poland their first ever win at a European Championship at the seventh attempt.

The result makes it an unlucky 13 for Northern Ireland, who had entered their first major international tournament in 30 years off the back of a 12-match unbeaten run.

Not even the presence of Kyle Lafferty, passed fit to start after overcoming a groin injury picked up in training on Tuesday, could help Northern Ireland find the net at Nice's Allianz Riviera.

The striker was a spectator in the early stages, as Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland - for whom Robert Lewandowski was quiet - started at a ferocious pace. With full-backs Artur Jedrzejczyk and Lukasz Piszczek overlapping at every opportunity, they peppered the Northern Irish area with crosses.

Yet for all their pressure, the Poles struggled to break down a resolute defence.Milik wasted easily the best opportunity before the break, firing over from eight yards out just after the half-hour mark.

Impressive teenager Bartosz Kapustka also forced goalkeeper Michael McGovern into an acrobatic save after teeing himself up for a left-footed drive on the edge of the area.

Northern Ireland, meanwhile, failed to muster an attempt at goal in the first 45 minutes. However, Michael O'Neill's side were forced to come out of their shell once Milik finally managed to get a shot on target in the opening stages of the second half.

Picked out by Jakub Blaszczykowski's cutback from the right wing, the Ajax forward took a perfect first touch to tee up a low, left-footed drive that flashed beyond the diving McGovern and into the net.The busy Kapustka was denied the chance to double Poland's advantage by a fine covering tackle by Conor McLaughlin.

Blaszczykowski then flashed an angled shot just beyond the target, while goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had to be quick off his line to deny substitute Conor Washington from making an immediate impact on proceedings.

Milik missed out on grabbing his second when he sent a well-struck volley straight at McGovern, meaning the game remained in the balance right through to the final whistle.

Steven Davis had Northern Ireland's one real chance to grab an equaliser, but the captain failed to get away a shot as he fell to the turf. The moment rather summed up his side's attacking performance, leaving them with work to do ahead of games against Ukraine and Germany.

Germany 2-0 Ukraine: Mustafi & Schweinsteiger lead Low's men to victory

Shkodran Mustafi scored his first international goal and Bastian Schweinsteiger struck late on as world champions Germany opened their Euro 2016 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Lille.

Mustafi, playing at centre-back with Mats Hummels unfit, headed in midway through the opening 45 minutes at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Jerome Boateng cleared a Yevhen Konoplyanka effort off the goal-line before the break as Ukraine enjoyed their best period of the match. But Joachim Low's men had much more control in the second half, with Toni Kroos hitting the crossbar before substitute Schweinsteiger made the game safe as he netted his first Germany goal in almost five years within three minutes of his introduction.

After losing three of their five matches since a shaky qualification campaign, three points on matchday one – even in unspectacular fashion – will come as a relief to Low ahead of their crucial clash with Poland on Thursday. The pressure is now on Ukraine to pick up a result against Northern Ireland if they are to keep their chances of progression to the last 16 alive.

A lively start to the game saw Konoplyanka's strike pushed away by a diving Manuel Neuer, while Jonas Hector mishit an effort badly from a presentable opening at the other end.

The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute when Kroos clipped in a free kick from the right and Mustafi timed his run perfectly to thump a header into the top corner.Neuer had to react quickly to make an impressive save from Yevhen Khacheridi's header from a Konoplyanka corner as Ukraine attempted to respond.

But Germany should have doubled their lead when Andriy Pyatov stood firm to deny Sami Khedira after he had beaten offside trap to surge clear on goal from Kroos' floating pass.Ukraine rallied again at the end of the first half, with Boateng only just able to make a dramatic clearance off the line at the second attempt after Yarmolenko's cross had found Konoplyanka unmarked at the far post.

Yarmolenko had the ball in the net a few moments later, but only after flag had been raised against Artem Fedetskiy, whose shot had forced Neuer to parry into the Sevilla star's path.Pyatov saved from Julian Draxler and Khedira early in the second half, before Germany struck the woodwork.

A patient passing move eventually led to an unchallenged Kroos pulling the trigger from 30 yards and his effort rebounded off the crossbar.Ukraine threatened when Yaroslav Rakitskiy forced Neuer into action with a free-kick from distance just before the hour mark, but Germany largely controlled proceedings after the break.

There was only one late scare when a mix-up between Mustafi and Neuer almost produced what would have been an unlikely equaliser for Ukraine, with the world champions relieved to see the defender's header loop away from goal.

Mesut Ozil wasted one chance to end the game as a contest as he shot straight at Pyatov after another precise Kroos pass, before Schweinsteiger did just that in making a swift impact from the bench in stoppage time.

Having been a doubt to appear at the tournament at all after an injury-interrupted season, Schweinsteiger found the top corner from Ozil's cross to mark his first appearance since March in style.

Ecuador 4-0 Haiti: Valencia and Co. through to Copa quarters

    ennervalencia-cropped_1cbzd53jrmp511qh9rm2mk1cac.jpg

Ecuador booked a spot in the Copa America Centenario quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over lowly Haiti in Group B on Sunday.

Enner Valencia continued his remarkable form for the national team as he added a goal and two assists to his impressive portfolio of work already at the centenary tournament, maintaining his fine club form from West Ham this season.

Having drawn its opening two fixtures against Brazil and Peru, Ecuador knew a win by two goals or more in the final group game would see the side through to the knockout rounds.

The hunt for goals got off to the best possible start when Valencia scored the opener after just 11 minutes, speeding beyond the last line of Haiti's defense to latch onto Christian Noboa's pass before coolly slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Jaime Ayovi doubled the advantage nine minutes later after Valencia turned from goalscorer to provider with some unselfish play, before the Haitians came into the game with a strong period to close the half.Haiti could not find the crucial goal, however and went 3-0 down to Noboa's 57th-minute strike.

Having already laid on a goal for Ayovi, Valencia set up his namesake Antonio Valencia, as he teed up the Manchester United player for the simplest of finishes with 12 minutes remaining to complete the rout.

Ecuador made two changes to the team which drew with Peru on Wednesday.
One was enforced through Gabriel Achilier's suspension, bringing Atletico Mineiro defender Frickson Erazo in the side as Ayovi came in to partner West Ham's Enner Valencia up top.

Haiti coach Patrice Neveu responded to his side's 7-1 destruction with four changes. Not that the side seemed to stem the flow of goals conceded, as Ecuador took the lead just 11 minutes into the game through Valencia.

He almost had a second six minutes later but for a fine save from Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide, though he did not have to wait long for another opportunity, this time providing the assist to set Ayovi up for a simple finish.

Haiti almost hit back approaching the half-hour mark as Mechack Jerome rattled the crossbar with a thumping header before Romain Genevois turned the rebound over the top of the net, which sparked a strong period from the unfancied Haitians, with Sony Norde justifying his manager's selection with some dazzling runs that had the Ecuador defense on the back foot.

The Haitians could not capitalize on Norde's play and found themselves further behind just over 10 minutes into the second half when Noboa made it 3-0 following some lovely Ecuador interplay, before the two Valencia's combined to finish Haiti off with a fourth, as the CONCACAF nation exited the tournament having conceded 12 goals and scored just once.

:shocked:Brazil 0-1 Peru: Controversial goal condemns Dunga's men to group-stage exit

Brazil was controversially eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America Centenario after an apparent handball from Raul Ruidiaz lifted Peru to a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Last year's semifinalist Peru booked a spot in the quarterfinals ahead of Brazil in Group B as Ruidiaz broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining but replays showed the substitute had used his hand to bundle Andy Polo's cross over the line as the game descended into chaos at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

In farcical scenes, referee Andres Cunha awarded Ruidiaz's 75th-minute goal, only to then consult with his linesman and after almost five minutes of discussions amid protests from Brazil, which only needed a draw to advance, the decision was upheld.Elias almost salvaged the required draw but the unmarked midfielder failed to score inside the six-yard box with three minutes to play.

After Ecuador's 4-0 rout of Haiti, the result meant Brazil failed to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 1987.

After impressing in goal-scoring cameos against Haiti, teenage sensation Gabriel and Lucas Lima were both promoted to Brazil's starting XI at the expense of Jonas and the suspended Casemiro. A fit-gain Miranda returned to the lineup to partner Gil as Marquinhos dropped to the bench.

Peru also made three changes for the must-win clash, with Aldo Corzo, Adan Balbin and Andy Polo coming in for Renzo Revoredo, Renato Tapia and Alejandro Hohberg.

The first half ended all-square but it was not without its moments in Foxborough.
Uruguayan referee Andres Cunha waved away two penalty shouts from Brazil, with Peru fortunate to escape unpunished in the 24th minute after Luca Lima was clipped by Christian Ramos inside the area.

Brazil almost took the lead three minutes later via Gabriel after some nice build-up play from Elias, who almost picked out Dani Alves with a delightful ball minutes earlier, but the former's shot on the turn was turned away by Pedro Gallese's finger-tip save.

The Brazilians and their short and sharp interchange play continued to cause problems for Peru as Willian fired a shot just over the crossbar after sneaking in front of his opponent to connect with Filipe Luis' cross, while Gabriel's effort forced Gallese into another save four minutes before halftime.

While Brazil dominate possession, with Peru's all-time leading scorer Paolo Guerrero isolated up front, the side was also lucky not concede a penalty on the stroke of halftime after Edison Flores was tripped by Renato Augusto but the referee waved play on.Peru emerged from the interval much improved, finally calling Alisson into his first save of the match following Cueva's 49th-minute free kick.

Against the run of play, the Peruvians stunned Brazil to open the scoring. Polo burst down the right-hand side, cutting in side before picking out Riduaz, who bundled the ball across the line, with replays showing he used his hand to score.

Brazil only required a goal to jump back into the box seat and Elias came within a whisker of sparing his team's blushes but he was unable to finish beyond Gallesse in the third minute of stoppage time as Peru held firm to seal their quarter-final berth.
