Fit-again Schweinsteiger revels in drought-ending goal

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger said his late goal against Ukraine was what dreams are made of after the world champions started Euro 2016 with victory.

Schweinsteiger came off the bench and scored within two minutes of his introduction in stoppage time to seal Germany's 2-0 Group C win over Ukraine in Lille on Sunday.

The 31-year-old, who came into the tournament with his fitness in question following an injury-interrupted debut season at Manchester United, converted Mesut Ozil's cross for his first international goal since 2011.Speaking afterwards, Schweinsteiger revelled in his drought-ending strike, while dispelling fitness concerns.

"Everything's fine. My injury has healed, I feel good," Schweinsteiger said via SID."It was a long way for a celebration, I am a little bit out of breath."It was incredible. You could have only wished for such a thing to happen."

Team-mate Shkodran Mustafi got the ball rolling at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, the centre-back heading in the opener midway through the first half.Starting in place of the unfit Mats Hummels, Mustafi timed his run to perfection and placed a header into the top-left corner.

While Germany opened their Euro 2016 campaign with a win, Mustafi lamented the openness of the clash against Ukraine, who saw Yevhen Konoplyanka's effort cleared off the line by Jerome Boateng in the first half.

"It was important to start with a win, even without conceding a goal. It sometimes was an open match, an English match," said Mustafi."It was end-to-end stuff, something we did not want to happen."

Germany midfielder Sami Khedira added: "Well it wouldn't be right if everything was perfect in the first game. I think when our opponents analyse the match they'll see our weakness, and that was when we lost the ball - when we did, we should have reacted quicker."Getting the ball from the defenders to the strikers wasn't good but we got better in the second half."

Pjanic arrives at Juventus for medical

    miralempjanic-cropped_14nbwylpkchcm15a60rl9endee.jpg

Miralem Pjanic has arrived in Turin for a medical ahead of his proposed move from Roma to Serie A champions Juventus. The Bosnia-Herzegovina midfielder has long been linked with a move away from the Italian capital, with Juve emerging as favourites to sign him in the last week.

Pjanic's representative confirmed that a switch to Juve was close after the club activated his €38 million release clause, with Roma director Mauro Baldissoni then revealing the 26-year-old had handed in a transfer request.

And Pjanic appears to be on the brink of signing for the Bianconeri, after arriving for his medical on Monday.

Pjanic scored 10 goals in Serie A last season as Roma claimed third place - and the final Champions League spot - behind Juve and Napoli.

Jones set for Mourinho talks over Man Utd future

    philjones-cropped_1eoz9l2bvoyxo14b8sffwerydn.jpg

Jose Mourinho has requested a meeting with Phil Jones to clear up the Manchester United defender’s future at the club.

Jones, 24,penned a new four-year contract at Old Trafford in 2015. However, a mixture of bad luck with injuries, health issues and the promotion of Daley Blind at centre-back, saw him start just seven games in all competitions last season under Louis van Gaal.

But new boss Mourinho is keen to sit down with Jones when he returns from holiday in order to explain where the centre-back fits in his plans for United in the coming seasons.

And while there is no official word on the Portuguese’s intentions, Goal sources around the club indicate that a reassurance of Jones’ importance to the squad seems likely to be Mourinho’s main motivation in calling the meeting.

Since arriving at United in 2011 as a 19-year-old, Jones has become known for his ability to cover several positions. Despite being a central defender by trade, he has also excelled as a right-back and a central midfielder, furthering notions that Mourinho will find a spot for him thanks to his flexibility.

With rumours abounding that Blind will be told he is not part of Mourinho plans, that could also come as a boost to Jones at a time when the signing of Eric Bailly from Villarreal for around £30 million had initially seemed to push him further down the pecking order among United's defensive stocks.

Fans have not let England down - Wilshere

England midfielder Jack Wilshere insisted his team-mates do not feel let down by the country's supporters at Euro 2016, despite UEFA's threat of expulsion following fan violence in Marseille.

Clashes between England and Russia fans around Saturday's 1-1 draw in Group B prompted UEFA to warn both sides that they could be kicked out of the tournament if the scenes were repeated.

Wilshere was brought on as a second half substitute at the Stade Velodrome and admitted the England players were aware of the unrest before and during the match.

But he rebuffed suggestions the supporters had let their team down, saying: "Of course not. I wouldn't say that. Their support in the stadium was fantastic and it always is – it was the same in Brazil.
"There was obviously a little bit of trouble but from what I saw in the stadium the fans were brilliant and we thank them for that.

"Before the game we were obviously aware because every single player has got a Twitter account and you can see over that. But as soon as we got to the stadium we felt the fans, it was fantastic support in the stadium."

Wilshere added the threat of expulsion would not affect the team."We let the people in the right positions deal with that kind of thing and we just need to concentrate on football," he continued.

"The fans in the stadium were brilliant. They helped us to perform the way we did. The trouble in the game you are not aware of while you are playing – it is only after the game you are made aware of it."

After missing most of the 2015-16 season with a leg fracture, Wilshere is feeling the benefit of three appearances for Arsenal and a pair of starts in England's warm-up fixtures for Euro 2016.He is hopeful of breaking into Roy Hodgson's starting line-up for the next Group B match against Wales.

"I feel good and sharp. I have been back a while now and got a good number of games under my belt. I was delighted to get on [against Russia]," Wilshere said.
"Every single player in the 23 wants to play. If you can't get in the starting 11 you want to get on and help the team."

:shocked:Shearer: Wales game may be Kane's last chance

Alan Shearer believes Harry Kane is in danger of losing his starting spot if he does not improve in England's next Euro 2016 game against Wales on Thursday.

The Tottenham striker got the nod up front ahead of Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge for England Group B opener against Russia, but was unable to make an impact as the Three Lions were held to a 1-1 draw.

Former England skipper Shearer - who was unimpressed with Raheem Sterling in the Russia draw - warned the 22-year-old of the need to be better against Gareth Bale and co.

In his column for BBC Sport, Shearer wrote: "England manager Roy Hodgson would be well within his rights to tell Kane that his performance against Russia was not good enough and he has to improve or he will change things up front.

"I would tell Kane - and also Sterling, whose final ball was yet again very poor - that, although I am going to stick with you, if you do not do better then I will make those changes during the Wales game. Then it is up to them to respond.

"I am a huge fan of Kane, but he looked very leggy and tired against Russia. Kane did not have a lot of energy and he did not play well. He did not manage a single touch in the opponents' penalty area.

"Of course, just because you have one bad game does not mean you are a bad player and Kane will be looking to Hodgson to give him another opportunity. But Hodgson has a lot of other strong options, particularly in the centre-forward positions.

"For the time being Vardy will have to wait, but the fact we missed so many chances against Russia will mean that, along with Sturridge and Marcus Rashford, he will be thinking it might not be long before he gets the nod."

:love:Spain 1-0 Czech Republic: Late Pique header delivers win for holders

    gerard-pique-spain-czech-republic-euro-2016_113tuy1ogpnf719fwce0kxa2s9.jpg

Gerard Pique scored with three minutes remaining as holders Spain opened their Euro 2016 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Czech Republic in Toulouse.

Spain, winners of the Euros in both 2008 and 2012, dominated possession but had to wait until late on to make the breakthrough against Petr Cech and a resolute Czech backline, who came into the tournament with the worst defensive record of the teams who qualified.

Pique was on hand to head home an inswinging cross from the outstanding Andres Iniesta to send Vicente del Bosque's team joint top of Group D with Croatia.
Alvaro Morata had Spain's best first-half chance, forcing Cech into action from close-range in the first half, while Roman Hubnik turned the ball against his own post after the break.

It looked like Del Bosque's men would be held to a frustrating draw, but Pique nodded in his first goal at a major international tournament to ensure they began with a victory two years to the day since their humbling 5-1 defeat to Netherlands at the World Cup.Spain now play Turkey on Friday as they continue their bid for an unprecedented third consecutive continental title.

A trio of saves from Cech ensured there were no goals in a relatively quiet first period.

Spain came closest to scoring when Juanfran released David Silva on his 100th cap and his cross allowed Morata to stab towards goal from close-range, with the Arsenal goalkeeper making a key stop.

Cech was also on hand to get an important touch to Morata's left-footed effort after the striker had been set up by Iniesta and then pushed away a Jordi Alba strike.

Czech Republic offered little threat going forward, with David de Gea called into action for the first time just before the break, comfortably saving from Tomas Necid. The post prevented Hubnik from scoring turning Morata's cut-back into his own goal early in the second half, before Nolito had a goal-bound effort blocked.

Hubnik then threatened at the other end, with De Gea getting down sharply to keep out his effort from Ladislav Krejci's delivery, while Cesc Fabregas made a crucial clearance from Theodor Gebre Selassie's goal-bound header.

Del Bosque changed his striker just after the hour mark, with 35-year-old Aritz Aduriz on to replace Morata, becoming the oldest Spain player to appear in the Euros.

Silva lashed a shot wide, while Aduriz was off-target with an overhead kick and a header in the closing stages, and it looked like the Czechs would hold on for a valuable point until Pique struck.Iniesta floated in a cross from the left and Pique rose to direct a low header beyond Cech from six yards.

That was not the end of the drama, with De Gea making a pivotal stop from Vladimir Darida in stoppage-time as Spain breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Republic of Ireland 1-1 Sweden: Clark own goal denies Boys in Green

    353C5BE900000578-3639402-image-a-30_1465839343712.jpg

An own goal from Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark gave Sweden a 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland in their opening game of Euro 2016 on Monday.

Wes Hoolahan's goal sparked scenes of joy amongst the Irish supporters at the Stade de France and it looked like Martin O'Neill's men would pick up their first points at a European Championship finals in 28 years and their first ever competitive win over Sweden.

But Sweden heaped pressure on the Irish goal and Clark suffered the anguish of costing his side two vital points when he headed Zlatan Ibrahimovic's cross into his own net.

Ireland worked tirelessly to try and take three points from their easiest-looking Group E fixture and deny Ibrahimovic the chance to make his mark on the tournament, but a tenacious first-half performance gave way to a tired final quarter and Sweden capitalised.

Ibrahimovic was well shackled for much of the game as he sought a goal in a record fourth European Championship and Cristiano Ronaldo can now beat him to the honour of that particular slice of tournament history when Portugal face Iceland on Tuesday.

The men in green shook off their early nerves and Jeff Hendrick drew a good save from Andreas Isaksson in the Sweden goal with a smart shot on the half-volley inside the opening 10 minutes.

Clark flashed a header across the face of goal that was inches away from John O'Shea as the defender slid in but the chance went begging as Ireland began to control the game.

O'Neill's side successfully pressed and harried the Swedes, whose chances were restricted to a long range free-kick that Ibrahimovic slammed against the Ireland wall.

At the other end, Ireland's best play centred around Hendrick, who teed up Robbie Brady for a shot the flashed just over the crossbar, before the Derby County man crashed a dipping effort of his own onto the woodwork from 25 yards.

But Ireland took a deserved lead three minutes after the interval. Seamus Coleman jinked inside from the right flank before sending over an out-swinging cross that Hoolahan powered into the net on the half-volley.

The goal sparked Sweden into life, and Clark had to hook a shot over the crossbar before Emil Forsberg squandered a simple chance on the rebound from a fine Darren Randolph save.

Ibrahimovic turned a close-range shot just wide of Randolph's goal as Sweden continued to press for an equaliser and with 20 minutes left the Irish resolve was broken.

Sweden swept into the Ireland penalty area and Ibrahimovic reached the by-line before squaring a cross that Clark headed into his own net, with Sebastian Larsson waiting to convert behind him.

Marcus Olsson flashed a cross just past Ibrahimovic as Sweden swarmed forward, but both sides were left with a point that likely leaves them requiring stellar performances against group favourites Belgium and Italy to progress.

Low demands more ahead of Poland clash

    joachimlow-cropped_1vj08mbjyb62k1i5gumfl26bfl.jpg

Germany will need to raise their game against Poland if they want to build on their opening Group C win over Ukraine at Euro 2016, according to manager Joachim Low.

The world champions eased to a 2-0 victory in Lille on Sunday thanks to Shkodran Mustafi's first international goal and an injury-time strike from substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger.Low's side therefore lead Poland on goal difference after their neighbours beat Northern Ireland 1-0.

But the head coach, who saw Germany lose 2-0 in Warsaw in qualifying for the tournament, knows his team will need to be better when they meet Poland in Paris on Thursday.

"We have both won, so the game is really important for the future of the group," Low said."I think we will really have to put in some work.

"Poland are in any case a strong team. We've played them twice and of course we lost once. "With [Robert] Lewandowski they are strong in attack. Like Ukraine a little, they have dangerous players going forward."

:cool:Spain's incredible clean-sheet run continues in Euro 2016 opener

Spain's run at the European Championship without allowing a goal has stretched to an all-time best 600 minutes following their 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic.

Vicente del Bosque's men have not conceded at the tournament since their opening match at Euro 2012, when Antonio Di Natale scored in a 1-1 draw with Italy.
Cesc Fabregas equalised three minutes later in that game and since then Spain have never found themselves in a losing position.

La Roja emerged victorious in Austria and Poland by going on to beat the Republic of Ireland, Croatia, France and Italy as well as defeating Portugal on penalties following a 0-0 draw in the semi-finals.

Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets have featured for the entirety of the historic run, with David de Gea and Juanfran replacing Euro 2012 stalwarts Iker Casillas and Alvaro Arbeloa against the Czechs.

OFFICIAL: Juventus sign Pjanic from Roma for €32m

    3312772_heroa.jpg

Juventus have confirmed the signing of Miralem Pjanic from Roma for €32 million, with the midfielder agreeing a five-year deal.

The Bosnia & Herzegovina international had been linked with a move to England to join Manchester United but the Serie A and Coppa Italia holders have exercised a clause in Pjanic's contract to seal a deal.

Pjanic arrived at the Stadio Olimpico in 2011 from Ligue 1 side Lyon for €11m and has become one of the most coveted midfielders in European football, turning in a string of fine individual performances in 2015-16.

However, after scoring 10 goals in 33 league appearances - including a strike against Massimiliano Allegri's men back in August - he has now committed his future to Juve.

"It’s always tough to play here against such a great side and a massive club," Pjanic said. "There’s a different atmosphere to other stadiums, this is a wonderful stadium.
"You knew you were playing against a top side here, and we always expected a tough game. I’m delighted that I’ll be wearing the Juventus shirt from now on.

"I hope it’ll continue to be just as hard for opponents here and that we’ll enjoy a lot of success together. It’s a great feeling, and I hope to score lots of goals, play well and win. I just want to make the Juve fans happy."I'm delighted to be here, and I hope to give you lots to celebrate on the pitch. I hope we can win together, forza Juve."
