What a tactical display from The Azzuri. I don't see a lot of teams breaking down that Italy defense. Not a lot of quality going forward but they have players who can sneak in a goal or two, and with their defense, that should be enough. My early favorites.

Belgium is a shit team. They are mostly hit and miss.
Specially the likes of Lukaku & Fellani.

And Italy doesn't have that much strength in their team too. They'll mostly get cut out from the quaters I reckon. See their other games. Most likely to draw.

Belgium 0-2 Italy: Giaccherini & Pelle seal victory for Azzurri

    q2OdFe9.jpg

Italy sprung a surprise in Group E by beating Belgium as Euro 2016's highest-ranked nation fell to a 2-0 loss in Lyon.Marc Wilmots' side, who sit second in the FIFA rankings, had been considered by many as favourites to prevail in France, but they have work to do following Monday's damaging defeat.

Emanuele Giaccherini opened the scoring with a superb two-touch finish following a stunning pass from Leonardo Bonucci.Italy should have been two up before the break, but an unmarked Graziano Pelle contrived to send a close-range header wide.

Belgium – in their first appearance at the Euros since co-hosting the tournament in 2000 – spurned a glorious chance to make Antonio Conte's men pay when Romelu Lukaku squandered a one-on-one opportunity in the 53rd minute, with Thibaut Courtois denying Pelle a couple of minutes later.

Wilmots sent on Dries Mertens and Divock Origi – the latter for a disappointing Lukaku – during a second half in which Belgium showed substantially more promise, only for Pelle to volley a second on the break deep into stoppage time.
Belgium sit bottom of the group following Republic of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Sweden.

Radja Nainggolan tested Gianluigi Buffon with an early long-range drive that the veteran goalkeeper pushed away from his left-hand upright. The Roma midfielder was off target with another drive in the 22nd minute, before Belgium began to cede the initiative.

Pelle's curling effort had Courtois diving to his left at the other end and the Chelsea shot-stopper was relieved to see it end up behind his goal.

But the deadlock was broken just past the half-hour mark when Bonucci lofted a perfectly weighted pass from his own half onto the toes of Giaccherini, who controlled and guided a nerveless finish past Courtois. The Belgium keeper was called into action soon after when Antonio Candreva stung his palms from 20 yards, while Pelle somehow missed with a simple header from eight yards.

Kevin De Bruyne was twice frustrated by some typically assiduous Italy defending as he sought to wipe out the deficit, with Conte's men soaking up what little pressure was being applied.

Buffon was late to emerge for the second half, but found himself thrust into the action eight minutes after the restart when Lukaku raced through on goal before sending his shot over the onrushing Juventus stalwart and wide.

It was a poor miss that could have been made to look even more costly had Courtois not brilliantly thwarted Pelle with a fine one-handed stop a few moments later.

Lukaku was withdrawn for the final 18 minutes as Origi got his chance, while Italy resorted to some heavy-handed defending to stifle Belgium, accruing a clutch of late yellow cards in the process.

Origi wasted two late headed chances and saw Pelle cap a swift counter-attack with a volleyed finish as an over-stretched Belgium were consigned to an opening-game loss.

Barcelona agree deal over Neymar transfer case

    neymar-cropped_1hkn73xsuottu1g0ekff7f9742.jpg

Barcelona have agreed to pay a €5.5million fine over "an error in tax planning" following the signing of Neymar from Santos in 2013.

Spanish prosecutors had requested the player stand trial for fraud in relation to his switch to the Catalan club, alleging both Neymar and his father, who also acts as his agent, had hidden the true value of the deal.

Barcelona stated they paid a fee of €57m, with €17m going to Santos and the rest going to Neymar's parents.A Brazilian investment fund who owned 40 per cent of Neymar's rights claimed they were not paid the correct amount, with investigators stating the actual price Barcelona paid was closer to €83m.

However, the Spanish champions have now found a resolution to the situation, meaning they no longer have any uncertainty over their future economic plans.

"The agreement involves the recognition by the club of an error in tax planning for the signing of the player, for the fiscal years 2011 and 2013, when they did not correctly withhold payments resulting from his incorporation," a statement on the club's website read.

"In addition, the club has been exonerated from responsibility for the fiscal year 2014, which was also part of the proceedings.

"The board considers the approval of this agreement to be a positive step, one that puts an end to a situation of legal uncertainty that could have affected the viability of the club's sporting and economic plan in the coming years.

"Given the importance of this decision, the board has decided to subject the motion to approval at the next general assembly of member delegates."

    Belgium were outclassed, admits Courtois

Thibaut Courtois admits that Belgium were outclassed in their 2-0 defeat to Italy in Lyon on Monday.

Marc Wilmots' side were regarded as one of the pre-tournament favourites in France, but sit bottom of Group E after goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle handed Italy all three points.

Courtois was unimpressed with his side's display, and has called on his team-mates to improve ahead of Saturday's clash with the Republic of Ireland, who drew 1-1 with Sweden on Monday.

"We were outclassed on all fronts," said Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois in quotes reported by Sportwereld. "Tactically, technically and organisationally we came up short.
"We made the same mistakes as in the friendly games. For the first we did not follow our man. "This is a big disappointment, because the first match is very important. We could have done a great thing after the draw in the other match. "The next two games we should be winning. We have to play better."

Wilmots refuses to condemn below-par De Bruyne

Marc Wilmots claims he is at a loss to explain the poor performance of Kevin De Bruyne in Belgium's 2-0 loss to Italy at Euro 2016.

The Manchester City star struggled to make an impact at Stade de Lyon on Monday, as goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle consigned Europe's highest-ranked team to a defeat in their opening game of the European Championship.Asked for an explanation of De Bruyne's peripheral role in a potentially damaging defeat, Wilmots said: "I don't know how to answer you.

"If I had an explanation I'd give you one. Is the kid tired after a busy season? Yes, perhaps. He's not quite been at full pelt in training but he's been preparing for this fixture.

"Kevin has given so much for the national team over the last four years that you shouldn't just expect me to slate him. That's why I left him on the field. He's always capable of scoring a free-kick, banging it in from range or providing an assist."

Italy opened the scoring against the run of play when defender Leonardo Bonucci picked out Emanuele Giaccherini with an inch-perfect forward pass, cutting out Belgium centre-back Toby Alderweireld and leaving goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois exposed.

"We didn't [give up] too many chances but then we conceded from a ball over the top. Three versus one, that's an individual mistake, obviously," Wilmots said of the first goal.

"If you're able to play an assist from 40 yards and you've got three [defenders] there, typically there shouldn't be any danger, so clearly there's been a communication breakdown, which shouldn't happen at the top level.

"And it put us in a more difficult position, because then we had to come out and force the game and the Italians started to really regroup at the back. If you watched the game as I did, in the second half they almost had 10 men behind the ball."It's difficult to play like that. They tried to hit us on the counterattack. They were pretty much there on the sofa... they were pretty relaxed."

With matches against Republic of Ireland and then Sweden to come, Wilmots acknowledged his team have little room for error left if they are to progress to the knockout stages from Group E."If we concede mistakes like that we'll be punished for it," he said.

"And if we can't take our chances we won't be able to win games either. But nothing is over. If we win our remaining two matches we'll still get through the group stage, which is our main objective, and that's what we'll try to do."

Conte urges Italy to heal 'open wound'

Antonio Conte says Italy must not lose focus after beating Belgium as they seek to close the "open wound" of their early exit from the last World Cup.

The Azzurri produced a smash-and-grab raid to defeat one of the Euro 2016 favourites on Monday in Lyon, where Emanuele Giaccherini's well-taken opener and Graziano Pelle's late counter-attacking strike sealed three vital Group E points.
Conte rejected out of hand the suggestion Italy's victory could see them - having been largely written off - now considered among the leading contenders to lift the Henri Delaunay Cup.

And the former Juventus boss has demanded supreme focus from his players to avoid a repeat of their fate in Brazil in 2014, when Cesare Prandelli's men defeated England in their opening game only to fail to progress after losing to Costa Rica and Uruguay. "I don't think a single game can change people's assessment. People who think that [we can now win] know nothing about football," he said.

"We still have an open wound from the World Cup."The memories are very fresh of two years ago when our first game was an excellent performance and then we went out in the group stage."We want to make the last 16 and then get as far as we deserve to go."

As for accusations this Italy team lack the star quality of their predecessors, he added: "Even in the tough times, I believe when supporters see the players giving their all on the pitch, willing to spill blood, sweat and tears, I believe they really appreciate that, regardless of what they have in terms of talent."

The passion felt by the Italy players was evident when Pelle sealed the points, as the unused substitutes and coaching staff joined the players on the field in wild celebrations. But the close bond among the squad has come as no surprise to their coach."I've been saying so since the start [of my tenure]," Conte said of his team's spirit.

"I don't tell lies. I'm not saying it for the sake of it. This is a squad of men and of good footballers. That's very important because in competitions like this is when the players start to enjoy being together.

"Nothing is written in football. Not at the start, not on paper. Everything needs to be decided on the pitch with deeds rather than words. We need to be really prepared in everything we do and everything we work on in order to bring happiness to ourselves and indeed our fans."

Italy's next match is in Toulouse on Friday, when they will face a Sweden side who drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland earlier on Monday.

Mexico 1-1 Venezuela: Corona magic seals top spot in Group C

    mexico-cropped_65mez7unbsov1puy380ewm7yb.jpg

Substitute Jesus "Tecatito" Corona produced a late moment of individual brilliance, helping Mexico seal top spot in Group C with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela at the Copa America Centenario. Jose Velazquez had Venezuela on its way to a shock win at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday courtesy of his stunning overhead kick in the first half.

But Jesus Corona was the hero for Mexico, scoring with 10 minutes remaining to ensure El Tri finished top of the group at the special-edition centenary tournament.
The victory also meant Mexico extended its unbeaten run to an incredible 22 games, but the team's 11-match winning run was ended.

While top spot in the group was up for grabs, Mexico and Venezuela had already qualified for the quarterfinals of the competition, and there were plenty of changes made by both sides.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio made nine changes to the starting XI that beat Jamaica 2-0, while Venezuela counterpart Rafael Dudamel made five from his side's 1-0 win over Uruguay. One of those five changes was Velazquez, who justified his selection in the 10th minute.

A free kick was flicked on by Christian Santos, and center back Velazquez looked more like a well-versed striker, converting the goal with an scissor kick to give Venezuela a surprise lead.

Mexico knew a loss would more than likely mean a quarterfinal clash against Argentina, and was keen to get back level as soon as possible. Hirving Lozano came close to finding an equalizer after playing a neat one-two with Oribe Peralta, but his shot was directed straight at Daniel Hernandez.

Lozano had a header miss the target not long after, before a diving effort from Corona - who came on in place of the injured Javier Aquino after 18 minutes - also went wide of Hernandez's goal.

Mexico pushed hard in the early stages of the second half and it took an unorthodox block from Wilker Angel to deny Peralta what looked to be a certain goal.

However, it was Venezuela which should have made it 2-0 when Josef Martinez was played through on goal just a minute after coming on, but the forward's tame effort was saved by Mexico goalkeeper Jose Corona. Miguel Layun, also a second-half substitute, had a chance for Mexico less than 60 seconds later but his effort went straight to Daniel Hernandez through a few bodies.

Osorio introduced Javier Hernandez shortly after and the Bayer Leverkusen forward almost had an immediate impact, but a free header in the box came off his shoulder and went out for a goal kick.

Mexico was then denied by a stunning double save from Hernandez, who tipped away Diego Reyes' header before blocking the follow-up from Hector Moreno.
Jesus Corona continued to threaten the Venezuela goal before he finally made the breakthrough in the 80th minute. The 23-year-old Porto winger dribbled his way through a sea of Venezuela defenders before blasting a shot past the helpless Daniel Hernandez.

Venezuela came close to winning it in dramatic fashion through Martinez, but the Torino striker's overhead kick was brilliantly tipped out for a corner by Jose Corona, with the game ending 1-1.

Uruguay 3-0 Jamaica: Hernandez, Corujo seal win

    uruguay-cropped_n9clt2aa353c1kqt34xd6nbj8.jpg

Uruguay closed off its disappointing Copa America Centenario campaign with a 3-0 win over Jamaica in the last game of Group C.

Abel Hernandez opened the scoring early in the first half on Monday, before a Je-Vaughn Watson own goal put Uruguay 2-0 up midway through the second period.Second-half substitute Mathias Corujo wrapped up the result in the dying stages at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California with his first international goal.

The win also ended a five-game winless streak for Uruguay in the Copa America, stretching back to its 1-0 victory over Jamaica in last year's edition of the tournament in Chile. Jamaica, meanwhile, has lost all six of its Copa America matches, without scoring a single goal.

Despite exiting the group stage of the Copa for the first time since 1997, Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez elected to name a strong lineup in the dead rubber, including the likes of Edinson Cavani, Diego Godin and Fernando Muslera. Nicolas Lodeiro and Hernandez came in for Gaston Ramirez and Cristhian Stuani, while Jamaica was unchanged from its 2-0 loss to Mexico on Thursday.

Hernandez started brightly for Uruguay and had an early effort saved by Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake, before a Cavani header from a short corner hit the side netting.

Cavani was given a golden opportunity after Blake cleared the ball right to him in the 18th minute, but the shot stopper atoned for his mistake with a great block at his near post. But the Philadelphia Union goalkeeper could not stop Hernandez from opening the scoring in the 21st minute.

The Hull City forward - who helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League - was played in by Lodeiro, and the 25-year-old made no mistake with his finish. Jamaica's first threatening effort on goal came in the 28th minute when Garath McCleary had a shot from just outside the area, but Muslera did not have to move in the Uruguay goal.

Hernandez almost doubled his tally in the 36th minute after making some space to shoot, but this time Blake produced a great save to deny the Uruguay No. 8.McCleary came close once again to ending Jamaica's scoreless run in the Copa, before Cavani had a header come off the post.

But it did not take long for Uruguay to double its lead, with a dangerous cross from Lodeiro touched by Hernandez, but bundled into net by Watson's hand.Cavani continued to look threatening but could not convert, before Corujo sealed the result with a well-taken finish in the 88th minute.

    OFFICIAL: Everton appoint Koeman

    3270382_heroa.jpg

Everton have confirmed the appointment of Southampton boss Ronald Koeman as their new manager.

The Dutch coach has signed a three-year contract with the Toffees after leaving the south coast outfit following two years in charge.

Having joined the Saints in 2014, Koeman led them to a seventh-placed finish in his first season in charge before going one better in 2015-16 as he secured qualification for the Europa League group stages.

He now replaces Roberto Martinez, with the former Wigan Athletic boss having been sacked in May after leading the Goodison Park outfit to 11th in the Premier League and the worst home record in the club's history.

And former Feyenoord and Valencia coach Koeman expressed his excitement at joining the Merseyside outfit.

“I believe in the club, in the team, in the fans and in our ability to achieve things in the future," he told Everton's official website.

“Everton is a club with a great history and real ambition and it is a proud feeling for me to be part of what we want to go and do, together with the chairman and Farhad Moshiri.

“I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the club and to preparing for a big season in the Premier League.”

And Everton chairman Bill Kenwright says the Dutch coach was his side's first choice in replacing Martinez.

“We are really pleased to have secured the man who was our No.1 target from the moment we set out to appoint a new manager.

“Ronald has such a strong track record in the game, instantly commanding respect for what he achieved as a player and for his qualities and accomplishments as a manager.

“The hopes and aspirations that we all have as Evertonians are with him, as is our total support at board, shareholder and fan level.”

Ozil: I don't care what people say about me

Mesut Ozil only cares about the opinion of one man on his performances at Euro 2016 - Germany coach Joachim Low.

Arsenal star Ozil played the full 90 minutes of the world champions' tournament-opening 2-0 victory over Ukraine on Sunday, setting up Bastian Schweinsteiger for their second goal with a typically classy assist in injury time.Despite his key role in securing the three points for Germany, the 27-year-old faced criticism in some quarters for his overall performance in Lille.

Low was effusive in his praise of Ozil before the start of the European Championship, hailing his "outstanding physical condition", and the former Real Madrid man insists his manager's feedback is all that matters to him.

"What comments people post, positive or negative, I do not care," Ozil told Sport 1."For me, it's only what the coach wants. I enjoy his confidence and have performed well, I think, with a great assist. That gives me and the whole team confidence."

Speaking about whether Germany, who swatted Ukraine aside with relative ease, looked the strongest of the pre-tournament favourites in their opening fixture, Ozil continued: "It is far too early [to say]. This was the first game and you have to get the three points, which we have done.

"We look game to game. Now comes Poland [in Paris on Thursday] and we want to get three points again."

Lewandowski: Poland must be fearless against Germany

Robert Lewandowski has stressed Poland must be fearless in their upcoming Group C game against Germany, who he believes are the undisputed favourites to win Euro 2016.

Poland beat Northern Ireland 1-0 on matchday one to record their first-ever win at the Euros. They could seal qualification for the next round with a win over Germany, although Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski expects a tough match.

"It will be a special game against Germany. We know each other very well. We met twice in the qualifiers and Germany are the favourites for me, not just on Thursday but also to win the tournament. They can go all the way," Lewandowski told Die Welt.

"We know how strong Germany are. But we will fight. Everything is possible in a tournament like this.

"We have to stay calm and act confident. We must play without fear and don't have any stress. We know it will be hard, but it's only football and we must enjoy ourselves. We can do it if we approach the game like that."

Wolfsburg confirm Rodriguez wants to leave

    3302912_heroa.jpg

Ricardo Rodriguez has told Wolfsburg that the wants to leave this summer, the Bundesliga club’s sporting director Klaus Allofs has confirmed.

The 23-year-old is currently with Switzerland’s national team at Euro 2016 but has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Roma and Real Madrid.

And Allofs has has admitted the player has made his desire to leave clear, but is not concerned by the decision.

"Rici has stated that his future is not with us," Allofs told Blick.

"But we can live with this decision."

In April, Rodriguez’s father confirmed that he had spoken to Madrid president Florentino Perez and director Emilio Butragueno, and admitted that the left back wants a move to Spain.

Rodriguez has been at Wolfsburg since January 2012 and is contracted to the club until 2019.
