Alves jets into Turin for Juventus medical

    danialves-cropped_pasd00zojbnu10m6drwxsh9d7.jpg

Dani Alves has landed in Turin ahead of his long-anticipated move from Barcelona to Juventus, with a medical set for Monday.

The Brazil defender has been at Barca since 2008, winning six Liga titles and four Copa del Reys and lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy on three occasions in his time at Camp Nou.However, Alves had a break clause inserted into his contract, which is due to expire at the end of next season, enabling him to move to Serie A champions Juve on a free transfer.

Juve posted on their Twitter account on Sunday: "Look who's just landed in Turin! Welcome, @DaniAlvesD2!"

They later confirmed on their website that the full-back's medical is now the only barrier to his signature.Alves made 391 appearances for Barca, scoring 21 goals.

Nolito: No contact with Barca or Man City

    nolito-cropped_ecilti7d7c8s1f2pz28hmt0jz.jpg

Spain striker Nolito says he has not had contact with either Manchester City or Barcelona, despite revealing his pride at apparent interest from the pair.

The Celta Vigo forward netted 12 times in La Liga last season, and also scored in his country's 3-0 Euro 2016 win over Turkey. He has been repeatedly linked with a number of moves ahead of the new campaign, but the 29-year-old insists he is simply focused on the Euros.

"I'm proud that two great coaches like [Barcelona boss] Luis Enrique and [Manchester City manager Pep] Guardiola are interested," he told La Vanguardia.

"I’m lucky that they have me in mind; it gives you a boost. But I'm focusing on the Euros and nothing else. I haven't spoken to either of them."This is Nolito's first major international tournament, and he is choosing to make the most of the experience, rather than worry about the transfer market.

"I'm enjoying it like a kid would and I'm not thinking about whether Barca will sign a forward," he added. "If Barcelona sign a striker then no problem. I congratulate them."

Hungary 0-4 Belgium: Awesome Hazard sees Wilmots' men into last eight

    Xp8g7Tq.jpg

Eden Hazard was the key to an impressive Belgium win to continue their Euro 2016 bid, as the improving side downed Hungary 4-0 to make the quarter-finals.
Toby Alderweireld's early header - only his second international goal – got the ball rolling as Marc Wilmots' men booked a last-eight tie against Wales next Friday.

A brilliant goalkeeping display from 40-year-old Gabor Kiraly kept Hungary in with a chance – the pick of his saves seeing him push Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick on to the crossbar.Hungary pushed for a leveller in the second half, but Hazard's late intervention ended any hope of a comeback.

Hazard set up substitute Michy Batshuayi to score with his first touch, before netting with an excellent solo strike himself as two goals in as many minutes ensured Belgium's progression.

Another substitute, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, then slotted past Kiraly in the last minute to add gloss to the scoreline. After losing Laszlo Kleinheisler to injury in the warm-up, Hungary made a torrid start and fell behind inside 10 minutes.

Kiraly had already denied Romelu Lukaku and De Bruyne early on, but could do nothing when the Manchester City playmaker's exquisite free-kick was converted by Alderweireld's thumping header from eight yards.De Bruyne should have made it two but, having been released by Lukaku, he could not beat the goalkeeper as Kiraly saved with his legs.

Balazs Dzsudzsak forced Thibaut Courtois, who had earlier got away with an embarrassing slip, into a decent save at the other end, but Kiraly was soon called upon again to keep Hungary in the game.

The veteran rose superbly to tip a brilliant De Bruyne free-kick on to the bar and stretched himself to make a pivotal stop from Dries Mertens later in a first half that saw Belgium rack up 16 shots on goal – a Euro 2016 record.Hungary, though, had Courtois worried when Gergo Lovrencsics drove a powerful strike inches over and Dzsudzsak sent an effort narrowly wide.

Kiraly was at it again to keep out Hazard early in the second half, but Hungary were thwarted by a one-handed Courtois save when Adam Pinter's shot deflected menacingly off Alderweireld.

Hungary continued to push for an equaliser and Roland Juhasz drilled an attempt inches wide from a tight angle, but Bernd Storck's side were not creating many clear chances despite their possession.Thomas Vermaelen was booked to rule him out of the Wales game, before Hazard produced two fine moments to end the match as a contest.

After 78 minutes, the Chelsea winger made great ground on the left and laid his cross on a plate for Batshuayi to slot home 95 seconds after coming on.A few moments later, Belgium's swift counterattack led to De Bruyne feeding Hazard, who eluded three defenders as he cut in from the left and swept a trademark finish into the far corner from 18 yards.

A three-goal margin was already harsh on Hungary, but Carrasco made it worse when he collected Radja Nainggolan's pass and converted with his left foot as Belgium continued their best run at a European Championship since 1980.

Payet: It is difficult to stop France

Dimitri Payet believes France are going to be difficult for opponents to stop if they hit their peak in the latter stages of Euro 2016.

The playmaker, 29, helped Les Bleus to a 2-1 victory over 10-man Republic of Ireland in Lyon on Sunday as the competition hosts moved into the quarter-finals.
France recovered from Robbie Brady's early penalty as Antoine Griezmann's quickfire second-half double proved decisive, before Shane Duffy's red card ended any hopes of an Ireland recovery.

England or Iceland will now be France's opponents in the last eight at Stade de France in seven days."When we play our way we are difficult to stop," Payet said to Uefa.

"Our fans were great - even though we were losing, they were still behind us. It is the worst thing that could have happened to go 1-0 down with a penalty early on. In the first half we got a bit annoyed and started playing their game."They tried to gain a bit of time and we wasted a lot of energy, but then we really started to play our game."

Payet insisted he did not have a preference on whether or not France would face England – where he plays his club football with West Ham – in the next round. He said: "Honestly no - if Iceland win it will be because they are better than England. We saw Croatia go out too and there are no easy opponents. We need to do everything we can to get through."

Blaise Matuidi, meanwhile, felt France deserved to progress because of their second-half performance against Ireland."It wasn't easy but we deserved the win," said the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder. "It was much better [in the second half] and I think we did what we needed to do. "We got some opportunities in the second half and did everything we needed to do to score.

"I think the whole team was playing better and that helped us win the game. Personally in the second half I think I played better – when everybody does a little more, the team does better."In the first half we didn't make it easy for ourselves."

Mane to undergo Liverpool medical ahead of £30m move

    3384122_heroa.jpg

Sadio Mane will be in Liverpool on Monday to undergo a medical ahead of becoming the club’s third-most expensive signing in a £30 million switch from Southampton.

The Saints have accepted the offer for the 24-year-old following lengthy negotiations, allowing the Anfield side to push on with a deal and enter discussions with the player.

Should the formalities go according to plan, Mane will officially be announced as the fourth recruit under Jurgen Klopp's tutelage by midweek, with Tuesday being the earliest confirmation date.

Marko Grujic, Joel Matip and Loris Karius have already been acquired ahead of the German’s first full season in charge on Merseyside, while only Andy Carroll (£35m) and Christian Benteke (£32.5) have cost more than the Senegal international in the club’s history.Mane, who scored 15 goals in all competitions last season - four of those against the Reds - recording nine assists, is expected to add much-needed pace and dynamism to Liverpool’s attack.

Klopp has been an admirer of his attributes since the forward’s two-year spell at Red Bull Salzburg, before his transfer to the south coast in 2014. Mane’s versatility and dribbling strength, in particular, have been appealing to the 49-year-old.

A product of the Generation Foot academy in Dakar, which also helped develop Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse and West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, the speedster was pursued by Manchester United last summer and in the January window, with Southampton rebuffing their attempts to lure him. Mane will become the fifth player to to swap St Mary’s for Anfield in the past three seasons for a combined cost of £92m, following Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne.

Southampton have already acquired winger Nathan Redmond from Norwich City on a five-year deal for £11m to counter the departure of the attacker.

Meanwhile, Liverpool hope a compromise can be reached with Leicester over Ben Chilwell. The Premier League champions want £10m for the 19-year-old and have rejected an offer totalling £7m for the left-back. Liverpool will focus their attentions on alternatives should an agreement not be forthcoming. The Reds will also attempt to conclude a deal for Piotr Zielinski once Poland’s participation in the Euros is over.

The Merseysiders have offered Udinese £11m inclusive of extras as well as a sell-on clause for the midfielder, but the Serie A club are holding out for £15m.

Hazard: Hungary win my best Belgium performance

Belgium captain Eden Hazard felt his performance in the 4-0 victory over Hungary at Euro 2016 was his best in international football.

The 25-year-old attacker scored a brilliant solo goal and set up a strike for Michy Batshuayi in a 94-second spell late on that sealed an impressive victory for Marc Wilmots' men in Toulouse.

Toby Alderweireld's early header had opened the scoring and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal after Hazard had made his mark.

Hazard created a total of four chances for his team-mates and was a constant threat down the left as Belgium produced what he felt was close to a perfect display to book a quarter-final against Wales in Lille – the city where he used to play – on Friday.Asked if this was his best Belgium performance, Hazard told reporters. "Yes. I had a lot of desire to win.

"We scored goals, created chances and Thibaut Courtois got his clean sheet so it was a good evening. "Maybe it was not the best opponent but they were still a tough side to play against. It will be hard to improve on the performance as it was almost perfect. We played well.

"I knew they were a team with a lot of quality who defended well. I knew we would have to be patient to score a goal. My younger brother [Kylian, who plays in Hungary] spoke about that, we got some information and studied them."

Hazard is expecting a tough challenge against Wales, who took four points from them in two games during Euro 2016 qualifying. The Chelsea star added: "The further we get the opposition will become tougher."We are lucky enough to play in Lille. I know the city very well - if not the stadium as I didn't play there - so I will be very proud.

"Wales are a tricky side to play against, we met them in the qualification games. We didn't have many chances, they have a very compact unit and a great player up front. We will study them well."

De Bruyne eyeing Euro 2016 final with Belgium

Belgium attacker Kevin De Bruyne has set his sights on the Euro 2016 final after his team reached the last eight.

Marc Wilmots' men crushed Hungary 4-0 on Sunday to book a quarter-final meeting with Wales. The two nations met in qualifying, with Chris Coleman's Wales taking four points from a possible six against Belgium.

De Bruyne, whose team sit on the so-called weaker side of the draw, is wary of Wales but is still eyeing the final."We now play a Wales team we know well. I can't wait to play this match with the number of Belgium fans in the stadium," he said."We'll need to play at the same level as we did today.

"We are going to try to go all the way into the final, now we're in the quarter-finals.
"We need to take things one game at a time, Wales have played well thus far and we deserve to be here as well.

"There will be no easy games if you want to get through to the final."A De Bruyne set-piece was headed in by Toby Alderweireld and the Manchester City man was also credited with an assist for Eden Hazard's solo goal.

Michy Batshuayi and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco were also on the scoresheet, and De Bruyne felt his side were worthy winners."It was a good game. We deserved the win," he said.

"We created a lot of chances in the first half but we weren’t able to get the second goal [immediately]. "It was a very intense match throughout and we wanted to play as much as possible and we succeeded.

"We said we needed to put more pressure on Hungary and when we got the second it became much easier."

Argentina 0-0 (aet 2-4 penalties) Chile: Defending champs sink Messi and Co. again

    chile-cropped_136e9ugyazaro1uejh6qd2i1l3.jpg

Chile made it back-to-back Copa America titles after seeing off South American rivals Argentina 4-2 in a penalty shootout in Sunday's ill-tempered final.

Both Argentina and Chile were reduced to 10 men in a fiery first half in a rematch of last year's decider, as Marcos Rojo and Marcelo Diaz saw red, and neither team could break the deadlock after 120 minutes of play in front of more than 82,000 fans at MetLife Stadium.

And for the second successive year, a shootout was required to determine a winner, with Chile coming out on top again following spot kicks as Argentina's 23-year wait for a major trophy continued.

After captain and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo denied Sergio Aguero with a stunning finger-tip save in extra time, he was at it again in the shootout, keeping out Lucas Biglia's effort following Lionel Messi's skied shot over the bar as Francisco Silva stepped up and converted the winning penalty. The 4-2 shoot-out loss marked a third consecutive defeat in a final for Argentina, beaten last year as well as the 2014 World Cup.

Despite concerns about Angel Di Maria's fitness, the star attacker returned to the starting lineup in place of the injured Ezequiel Lavezzi. Biglia also replaced Augusto Fernandez in midfield following the 4-0 rout of the United States.

Chile also made two changes after their 2-0 win over Colombia, with Arturo Vidal back in the XI having served a one-game suspension. There was also room for Diaz as Silva and Pablo Hernandez made way.

While Ever Banega had a chance inside the first minute, trying his luck from distance with Bravo left scrambling across his line as the ball flashed just wide of the post, the early exchanges were typical of South American football with more fouls and less action.

Despite the stop-start nature of the match, Argentina did settle quickest and loomed as a constant threat in attack and they should have been ahead in the 21st minute.

In a similar scene to the 2014 World Cup final, which Argentina lost to Germany in extra time after Gonzalo Higuain wasted a gilt-edged opportunity in the first half, the in-form Napoli striker bottled another golden chance on the big stage, pouncing on Gary Medel's slip and charging through on goal only to see his chip over Bravo drift agonizingly wide of the woodwork.

And just as Chile was left counting their blessings, things quickly turned sour for the title holders when Diaz was sent off by referee Heber Lopes approaching the half-hour mark for a second bookable offense, having blocked Messi.

With tensions simmering however, Argentina's numerical advantage was short-lived after Rojo was shown a straight red card in the 43rd minute for a tackle from behind on Vidal, sparking a melee. The second half was somewhat subdued compared to the first, as the match opened up, but neither team really tested the opposing keepers.

Not even the introduction of Aguero, in place of Higuain, could spark Argentina as fans watched on in silence, such was the lack of action in the respective attacking thirds, though Chile star Eduardo Vargas did force Sergio Romero into a low diving save with 10 minutes remaining.

Messi engineered an opening for Aguero in the 85th minute but the Manchester City forward wasted a good chance, unable to keep his effort under the crossbar.

There was action in the remaining seconds when Jean Beausejour sprinted forward and picked out Alexis Sanchez inside the six-yard box, though he was denied by Ramiro Funes Mori's last-ditch tackle, while Messi fired a powerful shot wide of the post at the other end as the match headed to extra time.

The game came to life in the additional period, with Bravo producing one of the saves of the tournament to tip Aguero's goal-bound header over the bar and keep the scores level in the 101st minute, after Romero dealt with Vargas and his effort just moments earlier.

Both Vidal and Messi missed the opening penalties, but Chile emerged triumphant thanks to Nicolas Castillo, Charles Aranguiz, Beausejour and Silva, as Bravo's save paved the way for victory.

Messi legacy stained as he quits Argentina on a low

    lionel-messi-copa-america-2016-argentina-26062016_13at02z0qo81w1qvijetzcejoa.jpg

Lionel Messi may well go down as the greatest player of all time, if he is not regarded as such already, but there is no doubt that calling time on his Argentina career an hour after losing his third final in three years can only be regarded as a stain on his legacy.

Not so much the act of retiring itself - and he may yet go back on the decision in the cold light of day - but the fact that he could not inspire his team-mates to victory in three attempts. It may sound like unreasonable expectation but we are talking about the pantheon of greats, of World Cup winners like Diego Maradona and Pele. This is the standard that Messi has set himself.

Of course, defeat here in New Jersey, or those in the past two years, cannot be pinned squarely on his shoulders, just as all of Argentina’s victories cannot be put down to the magical No. 10.

But to miss a penalty in the shootout defeat to Chile, having failed to recreate his fine form this summer over 120 minutes, is no doubt a major blot on a usually exquisitely kept copybook.

Stepping up to take his country’s first spot kick, after Arturo Vidal had already missed Chile’s opener, the Barcelona legend had an opportunity to give his side a decisive lead, both on the scoreboard and in the minds of the other 21 men on the pitch. But he blazed the ball high over the crossbar and into the stands. If Argentina was to win from here, the team would have to do it, for once and no matter how implausibly, despite Messi. They could not. Lucas Biglia’s effort was saved by Claudio Bravo, leaving Francisco Silva to rattle home the winner in repeat scenes of last year’s final.

It condemned Argentina to utter desolation. The players collapsed to the floor, almost as one. Messi just about managed to keep his emotions in check in 2014 and 2015 but could not here. He burst into tears. He said after the match that his decision to retire had already been made. Perhaps he knew right there and then.

Can any sportsman, amateur or professional, consider such relentless heartache? Losing three finals in as many years has never been done. This is an historic tragedy for Argentina, whose 23-year wait for a major honor goes on. This golden generation has come so close, but has failed each time. It appears Messi will now never win a title with his country.

Once again Argentina can look back and wonder where they would be if Gonzalo Higuain could finish his chances in a major final. Two years ago in Brazil he hooked a gilt-edged chance wide of the post in a tight game that Germany would go on to win in extra-time. Last year he fired into the side netting from a narrowing angle in the Copa final against Chile, and then missed his penalty in the shootout. Here, he was lamentable again. Set through on goal after Gary Medel switched off, the Napoli striker took forever to decide what to do and then sent a tame chip wide of the post.

That was by far the best chance of the match. Had he scored just one of these efforts in the last three years, Messi may have already sewn up the debate about his legacy, and where he stands compared to Maradona and Pele. But once again the supporting cast let him down.

His close friend, Sergio Aguero, who replaced the disappointing Higuain, would then uncharacteristically lash a great opportunity over the bar himself. It was a night for cool heads but few were up to the task. Indeed, two saw red in a first half dominated by elaborate referee Heber Lopes, a Brazilian, who booked Messi and two others, gave Alexis Sanchez an absolute dressing down and even blew the halftime whistle with enthusiastic jolts of the neck muscles. Thankfully he toned it down after the break. Not that the game opened up too much. That was thanks in no small part to Chile’s aggressive approach. Messi spent the 120 minutes with at least two markers around him, usually three, sometimes as many as five.

For the most part he battled valiantly against them, beating the majority before being either crowded out or fouled. Indeed the tactic looked like it might be Chile’s undoing when Marcelo Diaz received two bookings, both for fouls on the No. 10, within the first 29 minutes. The tenacious midfielder was sent off and it appeared to be an uphill battle for Juan Antonio Pizzi’s men, but they stuck to their task, and were helped when Marcos Rojo was sent from the field just before halftime.

In the buildup to the match, Pizzi hailed Messi as the most transcendental footballer in history, and it’s hard to argue. No player has captured the imagination of neutrals so successfully as Messi, especially in this era of Vines, memes and instant Twitter reactions. Fans around the world gather round to watch his biggest matches, for club and country, urging him to surpass his exceptionally high standards. When he does, the collective joy is unmatched.

There would have been that collective desire to see him cement his legacy with a victory here. It would have been cathartic for many football fans who watched on disappointed as Argentina faltered against Germany and Chile.

The majority of the 82,000 people who came to MetLife stadium, mostly Argentines and many neutrals, came to see something special. They were well within their rights to expect it, too, given how he’s played in this competition so far.

The U.S. fans have wanted more and more from him this summer and he has delivered without fail. The 19-minute hat trick against Panama, tying Argentina’s all-time scoring record in the quarterfinal, surpassing it with an exceptional free kick in the semis.Everybody knows Chile’s merits but Messi, surely, was playing too well to be shackled all night. He was.

He had a chance to win it, for Argentina and for those dedicated neutrals, in the final minute of normal time, but fired just wide of the post following another dart into enemy territory.Sergio Romero saved from Eduardo Vargas and Bravo denied Aguero in extra-time and to penalties it went.

Faced with the opportunity to end 23 years of hurt for his country, and maybe seal his legacy as the greatest, Messi, the captain, stepped up. That he only found one of the rows behind the goal cannot be glossed over. This was an uncharacteristic failure, but a failure all the same.

He had done enough in previous matches this summer to be crowned player of the tournament, especially given the lack of serious competition, but was somehow spurned in favor of Alexis in the post-match awards ceremony. Even claiming that award, though, would not have been enough to cover this great disappointment.

Even if you are not of the opinion that Messi needs to win an international trophy to match Maradona and Pele, there can surely be no denying that a failure to secure one winners medal in three attempts is not good enough, when the topic of conversation is the greatest of all time. These are the highest of standards.

Messi may be better than any other footballer ever, he may unite fans across the world like no other in any sport, but this may be the lowest point in his career, and if he does indeed retire he will never be able to put things right. His tears said it all.

    WTF Is this NEWS!!!

Messi is retiring from International Football!
And Aguero & Macherano are following him too. It is rumoredt that Lavezzi, Di Maria & Higuain will retire too :baffled:

Feel sorry for messi. I'm a madrista but some RMA pages have been trolling him so bad.
Football fans of Argentina & Brazil put their teams under constant pressure. If they win, they are gods. If they loose they are traitors.
    It's like cricket in India.
This is the reason Messi is retiring. People don't appreciate the work he's done for the team. Sadly he missed a crucial penalty.
Even Maradona has said to never come back if they loose. Disgraceful!

Anyway I hope he rethinks this & comes back again. He should not quit. That'll be a black mark on his career.

And some People have said that it's not messi's fault but Higuain & the rest of the players. Stupid theories. Argentina is one of the most powerful international teams. Everybody should share the responsibility.
But under pressure Messi couldn't perform. And it cost them the game.

BTW Messi took a dive :D
