:(Italy 2-0 Spain: Azzurri win to send European champions home

    giorgio-chiellini-italy-euro-2016_1pu76mbippmtv1quqkynsldvlz.jpg

Italy ended their run of heartbreak against Spain at major tournaments by knocking the holders out of Euro 2016 with a 2-0 last-16 victory at the Stade de France.
Spain defeated Italy at Euro 2008, as well as thrashing them 4-0 in the 2012 final, but this time they had no answer to Antonio Conte's men, who recorded a deserved victory.

Defender Giorgio Chiellini tapped in Italy's opener in the first half and only an impressive goalkeeping performance from David de Gea kept Vicente del Bosque's men in with a chance.

Alvaro Morata headed straight at Gianluigi Buffon as they looked to keep their hopes of a record third consecutive title alive, but wave after wave of Spain attack crashed against the rock-solid Italian defence.

Buffon made a wondrous save to deny Gerard Pique in the last minute of normal time and Graziano Pelle struck the final blow in stoppage time as Italy's slick counter-attack claimed another victim.

After beating Spain at a major competition for the first time since 1994, the prize for the Azzurri is a quarter-final tie against world champions Germany, who they beat en route to the final four years ago, in Bordeaux on Saturday.Italy were totally dominant in the first half, with De Gea getting down sharply early on to push away Pelle's accurate header from eight yards.

A few moments later, De Gea superbly tipped an Emanuele Giaccherini overhead kick onto the post having not realised the playmaker had been penalised for a foul as he attempted to shoot.Sergio Ramos had a penalty claim denied after tangling with Chiellini, but Italy continued to look the more likely and Marco Parolo headed just wide.

Italy got the breakthrough in the 33rd minute after Ramos had fouled Pelle just outside the area. Eder's free-kick was parried by De Gea and then kept alive by Giaccherini, allowing Chiellini to prod home from close range.

Just before half-time, Giaccherini cut inside from the left and shot towards the top corner to force a magnificent fingertip save from De Gea, which kept Spain in the match.

Del Bosque brought on Aritz Aduriz for Nolito at the break, although it was Morata who spurned a glorious chance to equalise – heading straight at Buffon from six yards after Cesc Fabregas' delivery.

Italy lost Daniele De Rossi to injury, but they should have killed the game off when Pelle's flick sent Eder racing through on goal, only for De Gea to stand tall and deny the Inter striker.Spain got better as the match progressed, with David Silva curling wide and Ramos off-target with a header as Italy began to sit back, while Buffon began to have an influence, keeping out Andres Iniesta and Pique from outside the penalty area.

Thiago Motta received a booking that will keep him out of the Germany game for slapping Sergio Busquets in the face, before Buffon made his most vital save – brilliantly keeping out another Pique effort from close range.Italy sealed a famous triumph on the break when a cross from substitute Matteo Darmian deflected into the path of Pelle, who volleyed home to send Conte and the Azzurri faithful wild.

    Rooney equals Beckham's England record

Wayne Rooney has become the joint most-capped outfield player in England's history on Monday, after starting against Iceland in the last-16 of Euro 2016.

Rooney led the side out to face the minnows in Nice, having played in all three of the Three Lions' fixtures in the tournament thus far; 1-1 and 0-0 draws with Russia and Slovakia respectively and a 2-1 victory over Wales, and has subsequently matched David Beckham's tally of 115 outfield caps.Rooney must now chalk up 11 more caps if he is to overtake Peter Shilton and become England's record appearance holder.

The Manchester United striker made his England debut at the age of 17, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 loss to Australia in 2003, and has since gone on to score 52 goals for his country, making him the leading goalscorer in the history of the Three Lions.

Rooney will beat Beckham's record if England defeat Iceland and he is subsequently picked to play against France in the quarter final.Rooney has yet to score at Euro 2016, last netting in a European Championship in 2012. The striker headed home in the 48th minute to give England a 1-0 win over Ukraine.

Portugal willing to play ugly to go far in Euro 2016 - Fonte

Portugal are yet to hit top gear at Euro 2016, but defender Jose Fonte sees no problem as long as they continue to grind out results.

Fernando Santos' side squeezed into the last 16 by virtue of being one of the best-ranked third-placed teams, despite only claiming draws against Iceland, Austria and Hungary in Group F.

Their second-round meeting with Croatia in Lille on Saturday was a dour affair, settled by Ricardo Quaresma's solitary goal three minutes before the end of extra time.

That victory set up a quarter-final meeting with Poland in Marseille on Thursday and Fonte has brushed aside those who have criticised Portugal's performances thus far.

"I think the most important thing is we are in the quarter-finals," the Southampton defender told a media conference on Monday.

"The main thing is to be in the quarter-finals and it doesn't matter if you play beautiful football or if you're playing ugly football, you have to win.

"I want to win, and if I have to play bad every game and win I will do it. People can say whatever they want, obviously we as a team want to play extremely good and beautiful football and win games but it's not possible to do that every game.

"There were games we played well and we did not win, there was a couple of games that we didn't play so well and we managed to win.

"The most important thing like I said before is to advance in the competition and we are happy with that."We will try to improve obviously, try to be better every game, but above all, to win."

Griezmann: I want to play in the centre for France

Antoine Griezmann believes a tactical half-time switch that saw him occupy a more central role was key after he scored twice in France's 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016.

The host nation were staring down the barrel of a last-16 exit as Robbie Brady's second-minute penalty put Ireland into a 1-0 half-time lead in Lyon on Sunday.

However, a shrewd tactical move from coach Didier Deschamps saw Griezmann come in from the wing to play centrally in a 4-2-3-1 line-up and the Atletico Madrid man flourished with a crucial brace that put France into the quarter-finals.

And Griezmann feels he is better suited to playing in the middle, saying: "I had a discussion with the coach. He asked me where I was feeling better and I told him that I'll play where he needed me. On the right or down the middle, I will give it my all."But it is true that in the centre is where I have my bearings, where I played most of the time this season with Atletico."

On his own performance, he added: "I'm very happy, and I try to answer the encouragement I receive on social media through my efforts on the field, for everyone from the fans who buy a shirt to those who encourage us inside the stadium."

France will now face either England or Iceland at the Stade de France on Sunday, and Griezmann said his side had learned from a poor first half against Ireland."Our first half was not very good, but it is not possible to do worse," he said. "In the second half, we saw a France team that everyone wants to see.

"We all said things at half-time. Basically, it we had to move our asses. If we stayed there with that result, we would all look like idiots."The coach made tactical decisions that helped us."

Jorge Sampaoli confirmed as new Sevilla coach

    jorgesampaoli-cropped_9bjreydtmlhq1e9nzfcjxmqkp.jpg

Sevilla have confirmed that Jorge Sampaoli will be their new coach, replacing Unai Emery at the Europa League holders.

The Andalucian club released a statement welcoming the Argentine on Monday, as he put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

"The Argentine coach begins here his first adventure in Europe after having triumphed in South America and establishing himself as one of the highest-rated trainers in the football world," the message pointed out as Sevilla welcomed him to the club.

Sampaoli's last job was with the Chilean national team, whom he led to the 2015 Copa America on home soil.

The Rosario native had previously come to prominence at Santiago's Universidad de Chile, where he lifted three national championships and a Copa Sudamericana title in just two years.

Having coached in Peru and Ecuador as well as Chile, Sevilla will be the 56-year-old's first taste of European football.

:shocked:England 1-2 Iceland: Hodgson's men humiliated in last 16 upset

    iceland-euro-2016_1xtk61rm2bveh13ruqlnl0ohua.jpg

Iceland's remarkable Euro 2016 story continued as they came from behind to defeat England 2-1 and book a quarter-final meeting with hosts France.

The small nation's players and supporters have won an abundance of admirers during their time at the finals, but many expected their tale to come to an end against Roy Hodgson's favourites.

And when Wayne Rooney put England ahead with a fourth-minute penalty, it looked as though Iceland had a mountain to climb if they were to extend their stay in France.

But, in a dramatic opening to the game in Nice they found themselves ahead inside 20 minutes as Ragnar Sigurdsson equalised before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson benefited from another costly Joe Hart mistake.

England pressed to get themselves back in the game, but as was the case against Slovakia in their final group game they struggled to break down stubborn opposition and it seems unlikely that Hodgson – out of contract after these finals – will continue as manager following more disappointment at a major tournament. However, the headlines should belong to outsiders Iceland, whose
sensational debut campaign at a major finals goes on, with a last-eight clash against the host nation in Paris on Sunday the next chapter in their fairytale.Rooney had spoken in the build-up about England's need to find an early goal and it was the captain who provided exactly that from the spot.

Raheem Sterling – regarded by some as a surprise inclusion in place of Adam Lallana – was felled by a clumsy challenge from goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson and Rooney confidently tucked home from 12 yards.

The lead lasted less than 90 seconds, however, as Kari Arnason flicked on Aron Gunnarsson's long throw and Sigurdsson smashed in from close range.Dele Alli fizzed a volley narrowly over as England pressed to regain the advantage, but it was Iceland who forged ahead to send their fans into raptures in the 18th minute.

Neat interplay on the edge of the box saw the ball worked into Sigthorsson, whose effort squirmed into the bottom-right corner via the hand of Hart.As England responded Daniel Sturridge teed up Harry Kane, whose thumping volley was tipped over by Halldorsson, but Hodgson's side remained frustrated until the break.

Things almost got worse for England 10 minutes after the restart as Sigurdsson's overhead kick from close range was straight at Hart as the defence showed its frailties against the set-piece once more.

Alli blazed wildly over from Sturridge's deflected cross on the hour, but as the game wore on England's play became more frantic and they were unable to put the Iceland backline under any concerted pressure.Kane headed weakly at Halldorsson with 11 minutes remaining, while Hart saved smartly from Gunnarsson at the other end.

OFFICIAL: Hodgson quits as England manager after Iceland defeat

    roy-hodgson-england-euro-2016_1qlxgbwg5v2mu1d1kkj3yavsdj.jpg

Roy Hodgson has resigned as England manager after a 2-1 defeat to Iceland sent his side crashing out of Euro 2016.

Wayne Rooney had given England an early lead from the penalty spot but Iceland quickly equalised through Ragnar Sigurdsson before Joe Hart's error allowed Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's to score the winner in the 18th minute.

Hodgson's contract was set to expire after the tournament and the 68-year-old has confirmed that he will step down as manager, with his assistants Ray Lewington and Gary Neville also leaving their roles.

Reading a pre-prepared statement during his post-match press conference, Hodgson said: "My contract was always up after the Euros, so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players.

"They’ve been fantastic and done everything that’s been asked of them.
"When I arrived, I was told players didn’t turn up to play for their country, or pulled out at the last minute, but I’ve not seen any of that. These players love to play for their country. Their commitment has been unquestionable.

"Ray [Lewington] and Gary [Neville] have asked for me to speak on their behalf. They arrived with me as part of my coaching team and they leave with me. I’d like to thank them for their dedicated support and the major part they played in the team's preparation.

"Finally, I’d like to thank all the support staff, players, the FA and, of course, the fans. It’s been a fantastic journey these four years and it’s one I’ll look back on with pride.

"I’m sorry it's had to end this way with another exit from the tournament but these things happen. All I can do is wish everybody the very best and hope you can still see an England team in a final of a major tournament very soon."

'The future is bright' - Rooney denies international retirement after England debacle

Wayne Rooney has dismissed suggestions that he is considering his international future after seeing England fall to one of the worst defeats in their history at the hands of Iceland.

The Manchester United star put the Three Lions ahead on Monday with an early penalty, but the favourites succumbed to the determined Iceland side who ran out shock 2-1 winners to progress to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016. And speaking after the game, Rooney made no attempt to hide his disappointment as their campaign came to an end.

"I feel disappointed, gutted, it's a hard one to take. We had a good chance of going through and after such a good start, conceding two sloppy goals, we're disappointed," he said in the mixed zone after the final whistle. As he revealed how Roy Hodgson broke the news of his resignation, Rooney insisted that a similar step back was not on his mind.

"He told us after the game, he went round all the players and as a group of players we appreciate what he's done, he gave a lot of these players their debut and you can't forget that.

"I think it's hard to see it now but the future is bright, going back to tonight it's a tough one to take, it'll take a bit of time for sure but we'll have to try and dust ourselves off as quick as we can and move on.

"I said before the tournament I'm proud to play for England, I'm interested and excited to see who the next manager is and if selected I'm available to play."

'I couldn't have done it without him!' - Lagerback thanks Hodgson after Iceland win

Iceland's sensational 2-1 win over England at Euro 2016 hastened Roy Hodgson's resignation, but Lars Lagerback was full of praise for the veteran coach.

Wayne Rooney gave England an ideal start with a fourth-minute penalty in Nice, only for Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson to turn the match on its head before the 20th minute.

England struggled to break down their opponents throughout the remainder of the game, becoming more panicked in their play, as Iceland held on for a place in the quarter-finals against France as their remarkable campaign goes on.

Although understandably elated at his side's progress, joint head coach Lagerback still had words of praise for his opposite number."One of the reasons I sit here is Roy Hodgson. Huge thanks to him," he said in his post-match media conference.

"He changed the coaching ways in Sweden and I have to thank him for that. I have a lot of respect for him."Lagerback went on to hail his players who, along with the nation's supporters, have captured the imagination of many in France.

"This was a team performance. We are well organised, everybody is doing his job. Everything is in place on the pitch. We deserved our win," he said."Football is about winning, about not conceding and scoring yourself. This team showed what it can do. The players were absolutely great.

"We tried to be a bit cooler in possession. We are taking small steps. But we must keep improving. I have a lot of respect for the players when they take less risk when we are defending a result.

"You don't feel like this on a lot of occasions, especially with a team like Iceland. There is a lot of pressure and things going on when you take on a team like England. There was a huge happiness after the final whistle."The France game will be even bigger. We are playing the hosts in a quarter-final in Paris. That's even bigger than then England game. We want to improve a little bit.

"This match will have an influence on the players. Some of them deserve contracts at bigger clubs than they are at now. Plus this is a huge experience to go through something like this. These players can still develop and do even better. The players must keep their feet on the ground, though."

Hart: I can only apologise for blunder in England defeat

England goalkeeper Joe Hart was disconsolate after he and his team-mates were condemned to a shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland that sent them crashing out of Euro 2016.After Ragnar Sigurdsson had cancelled out Wayne Rooney's early penalty, Hart allowed Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's shot to squeeze under his left hand and into the net for Iceland's winner on Monday.

It was Hart's second high-profile error at the finals, after Gareth Bale's long-range free-kick squirmed in during the group-stage win over Wales.

England's defeat was swiftly followed by the resignation of their manager Roy Hodgson, while Iceland were left to celebrate a quarter-final meeting with France as their sensational tale goes on.
"Absolutely devastated," was Hart's description of his emotions to reporters."As a team, we're very disappointed but personally, I can only speak for myself, I can only apologise for allowing Iceland to take the lead when we should have been dominating after a very good start.

"We had amazing support throughout and people are going to have opinions and they deserve to on what's happened tonight."I want people to know how much we put in and it's not down to desire or anything like that, ultimately it's down to the performance why we're in this situation.

"It's a tough night for us as a team, and I include Roy in that team. It's difficult when you lose a manager in these circumstances, it's not the way any of us wanted him to go."When asked if England's expectations of their own chances were perhaps too high, Hart replied: "Of course we had high expectations, because we came into this to do well. It would be impossible not to have the expectations we had.

"We had a positive mindset, the expectations look foolish now, of course, we've gone out to Iceland and we're going to have to own that.

"We're going to have to go again, it's a tough moment in our careers but I'm a bit lost for words if I'm being brutally honest. "I hope the young guys will take as much out of it as they can, the older guys will wear the responsibility and rightly so.

"We'll get another opportunity and we'll see what happens when that comes around. It's up to the players how they want to handle it, it's in the history books and we've got to deal with it."

'Worse performance ever!' - Shearer tears into England after Euro 2016 exit

Alan Shearer has described England’s 2-1 defeat to Iceland as the worst performance he’s ever seen from the national team and believes Roy Hodgson was ‘making it up as he was going along’ during the tournament.Hodgson’s side were eliminated from Euro 2016 with the shock defeat, despite Wayne Rooney giving them an early lead from a penalty.

However, Ragnar Sigurdsson equalised just two minutes later before Joe Hart’s error allowed Kolbeinn Sigthorsson to score the winner.

“That was the worst performance I’ve ever seen from an England team, ever,” Shearer told the BBC.“From start to finish we were out-fought, out-thought, out-battled, we were totally hopeless for 90 minutes.

“I said after the three group games that I didn’t think England were good enough. I didn’t see enough in those performances.“It looked like Roy was making it up as he was going along. He didn’t have a system, he didn’t know his best players, tactically inept.”Shearer has also questioned why Jack Wilshere was included in the 23-man squad after an injury-hit season for Arsenal.

“We had players in the squad who didn’t deserve to be in the squad. How on earth can he pick Jack Wilshere? Hasn’t started a game, or hasn’t played 90 minutes for over a year, played 141 minutes in the season, how can he be good enough to come in and represent England.

“He brought him on [against Iceland] at half-time to try to save the game after taking him off after 50 minutes [against Slovakia] because he wasn’t good enough.

“Raheem Sterling, he’s put his neck on the line, hasn’t performed, hasn’t been playing for his team.“Harry Kane on corners for the first game. The list is endless. From start to finish it’s been pretty hopeless.”

Ow bro France/Germany thamai top favourites.Semi Finals waladi France Vs Germany set wenna loku chance 1kak thiyanawa so teams 2ka set unoth Semi-Finals waladi hoda gemak yai.

anith patthen Portugal latath Final enna hoda chance 1kak thiyanawa:yes:

People keep underestimating Portugal big time.
As I said earlier, they might have drawn the first three games, but in the frst two games theirs were the best performance I saw in the group stages.
They linked up pretty well and had some really good runs. But sadly couldn't find the net because didn't get good balls in to the box.

Godak kattiya kiyanne Portugal melo wedak ne. Ronaldo thamai team eka adan yanne kiyala. Eth ehema ne. Team eka sahenna hodai.
Godak star players la nathi wenna puluwan. Eth the team is good. Wade thiyenne Team eka hadila thiyenne Ronaldo wate. They all depend on Ronaldo. Wanting him to become the saviour.
Oya idea eka nathi karagaththanam sahenna dinana chance eka wadi wenawa. Ronaldo ta thiyana pressure ekath nathi wenawa. kattiya hodata play karanawa.

Habai Hungary match eke nam man baya una. :D goals gahuwata team eka poddak balance eka nathi kara gaththa. Croatia match eke nam thanikara tactical battle ekak giye. Possession aran attack karanam sure ekata counter eken wadinawa perisic & rakitic gen. Btw Rakitic wasn't that good in the game.
The best player in the croatia team was of cause Modric. Stats prooves it.
Ronaldo has said he didn't celebrate Quaresma's goaal because he couldn't celebrate against Modric.
Poland match eke nam kohoma weida danne ne. Man nam kiyanne all out yanna one kiyala.

    Starting line up -
    Ronaldo - LF
    Nani - CF
Quaresma - RF (But playing as a winger more than a forward)
    W. Carvalho - CDM
    Renato Sanches - CM
Jao Mario/ Adrien Silva/ Jao Muotinho - CM
    LB - Guerrrero
    RB - Cedric
CBs - Pepe & Jose Fonte

As I said before the croatia game Renato Sanches changes the game completely while Quarresma is the wild card. They both work very well as subsitutes. But I think we should go all out starting both in the game because we can get 2 or 3 goals like this.
But if we go all out on attack Cedric should start as RB other than Virenha cause he is more defensive minded than Virenha and we will need help in the back in case poland counter.
Poland doesn't use the wing that much. They run mostly through the middle with Blaskcovisky (can't spell his name lol!)
So maybe it'll be a good thing to play 2 CDM's maybe but nobody does that usually.

Spain just not good enough - Pique

Gerard Pique does not believe Spain are at the level required to win major tournaments after their reign as European champions was ended by a 2-0 defeat to Italy at the Stade de France.Spain headed into Euro 2016 having won the previous two European crowns either side of triumphing at the 2010 World Cup.

They crashed out at the group stage of their defence of the latter trophy in Brazil two years ago, although a swashbuckling 3-0 win over Turkey in this competition fired hopes of a revival.

But Spain suffered a last-gasp loss against Croatia to slip to second in Group D and set up a last-16 clash with Italy, who gained revenge for their humbling 4-0 defeat in the final of Euro 2012 thanks to goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle.

"We wanted to keep going, but we ended up with the most difficult route and we weren't up to the level required," said Barcelona defender Pique."There are many circumstances, the level of the players, a mixture of things.

"After the defeat against Georgia I said we weren't favourites and I think that right now we are not among the best. We have great players but we are not at the level to win tournaments."Pique wants this bitter experience to motivate Spain for the challenges ahead, while he would be happy for Vicente del Bosque to stay on.

The veteran coach, who oversaw Spain's marches to glory in 2010 and 2012, was widely expected to retire after the tournament but told a post-match news conference that he would take the time to discuss his position with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

"He has earned the right to carry on. It's his decision," Pique added."This has to help us to prepare for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and know our place, that we are not favourites and that we have a lot of work ahead to prepare for Russia.

"It's not the best moment of our careers. Now we will rest and reflect and we'll see what we'll do next year."

Argentina's president urges Messi not to quit national team

    3389252_heroa.jpg

Argentina’s president Mauricio Macri has personally contacted Lionel Messi to try and persuade the Barcelona star to not quit the national team.

Argentina lost to Chile on penalties in Sunday’s Copa America final, while Messi missed a spot-kick and was in tears at the final whistle.

After the match, the 29-year-old claimed that his international career was over: “In the dressing room I thought that this is the end for me with the national team, it’s not for me.

“That’s the way I feel right now, it’s a huge sadness once again and I missed the penalty that was so important.”

But a spokesman for Argentina’s president told AFP: "He [Macri] called him and told him how proud he feels of the national team's performance and asked him not to listen to the criticism.”

Marci also posted his support for Messi via his official Twitter page.

:yes:Maradona calls on Messi to continue with Argentina

Diego Maradona insists Lionel Messi must not follow through on his vow to quit international football.

An emotional Messi dropped a bombshell following Argentina's heartbreaking 4-2 penalty shoot-out loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final on Sunday, announcing his intention to walk away from the national team. The 29-year-old's revelation came in the wake of Argentina's third consecutive defeat in a major final as their 23-year wait for a title continued.

But Argentine legend Maradona - regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all-time - said Messi, whom he coached during his time as national team boss between 2008 and 2010, must play at the 2018 World Cup.

"Messi has to stay in the national team. He will go to Russia in form to be world champion," Maradona said via La Nacion."He has to rely more on boys who can help take the team forward and less on those who say they have to go.

"Those who are saying he should quit are doing it so that we won't see what a disaster Argentine football has become."Messi's plan to retire comes as the Argentine Football Association (AFA) implodes.

With the AFA's presidential election marred by controversy and uncertainty, Maradona added: "I am very sorry and very angry with what is happening to Argentine football.

"We hit bottom, we reached the bottom."
