Pep Guardiola talks Man City, Bayern 'failure' & Coldplay with Noel Gallagher

    3415062_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola has been given a crash course in the Manchester way of life in an entertaining interview with former Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher.

Guardiola was unveiled to Manchester City fans on Sunday at the culmination of a weekend-long event at the club's City Football Academy training ground.

And on Monday morning the Blues followed that up by releasing a full sit-down interview with Gallagher, who quizzed the Catalan on a range of topics.

These included the prospect of facing Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, and how he felt towards the end of last season as City diced with finishing outside the top four.

Guardiola also teases Gallagher by revealing he likes the music of James Blunt, before the High Flying Birds singer offers him knock-off tickets to a Coldplay concert.

'It will change their lives' - Hallgrimsson delighted with Iceland achievement

Iceland co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson does not think his players are aware of the importance of their achievement of making the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, but believes their lives will never be the same.

Most thought Iceland had done well in just qualifying for their first ever major tournament, but they shocked everyone when they drew with Portugal in their first game, before knocking England out at the round of 16.

Their dream run ended at the hands of hosts France, who won 5-2, but Hallgrimsson said he was not sure the players understood the gravity of what they had achieved for their small nation.

"I think that will sink in in a few days when they start to read the papers and see what has been written," he told reporters.

"You lose all the media thing when you're in the tournament and you don't see the TV, especially the Icelandic TV, so I think it will sink in really quickly after the tournament.

"It will change their lives, you wait and see."Icelanders are really proud of this achievement and you can see that in the numbers, both the numbers that came here and also those who came together in Reykjavik and everywhere to watch the games.

"So I think it has brought the nation closer to each other and that's fantastic when you are a part of something that does that."As the squad return to Reykjavik, Hallgrimsson is hoping the adoring public can forgive them for losing 5-2.

"Hopefully they're not throwing eggs at us after this performance," he joked."I think the fans, how appreciative they are to the players, and what is also fantastic is that the players showed their appreciation to the fans.

"It's funny that we lost 5-2 and all the French fans had gone home yet still the Icelandic fans were there cheering the team on, and that's fantastic."You're proud to be Icelandic, not only because of the performance of the players in this tournament but especially the supporters."

Gomes: Portugal focused on Wales' weaknesses rather than Bale

Portugal will focus on Wales' weaknesses rather than putting a specific plan in place to stop Gareth Bale in their Euro 2016 semi-final on Wednesday, says Andre Gomes.

The final-four encounter has been billed as Cristiano Ronaldo against Bale, with the two Real Madrid stars - key figures for their respective nations - set to go head to head. However, Gomes believes every player will have a role, with Portugal concentrating on where they can harm Wales.

"We know that Bale is an important player, a reference, like Cristiano is for us, but I do not believe that we are going to have to take special care," he said. "What matters is the team. There will not be anything special. We will try to take advantage of the weakness of Wales.

"Here we are all important. There are 23 players, not 11 and three more. We have all worked well."Those who played did a great job, as well as those who have supported. This has been one of the secrets."

Portugal are yet to win a game in France in 90 minutes and required a penalty shoot-out to overcome Poland and book their place in the final four.

Gomes admits there has always been pressure on the national team, but there are greater expectations for young players like himself."We were always considered one of the best national teams in the world. There have always been great expectations," he continued.

"It is true that we are one step away but it's also true that we still have the semi-final."For us newcomers, the expectation is higher. We are going to give the maximum in our next final, on Wednesday, and then enjoy the final of the European Championship."

After a muscular injury kept the Valencia midfielder out of the quarter-final against Poland, he is confident of making a return against Wales."Physical problems are things we have no control over. I have tried to improve every day and now I am feeling better," said Gomes.

"I have already returned to training with my team-mates. Now I will try to improve until the next game to give my contribution, on or off the pitch."

:(Smalling in hospital with food poisoning amid surfing accident rumours

    chrissmalling-cropped_hpcp3bw3uslo1sd3p3adx3z4l.jpg

Manchester United have announced that Chris Smalling has suffered food poisoning on holiday in Bali following the emergence of reports he had been injured in a surfing accident.

The 26-year-old, who was a part of the England squad which crashed out of Euro 2016 to Nordic minnows Iceland less than a week ago, was photographed wearing a neck brace and with a bandage around his head as he signed a United shirt from a hospital bed.

Smalling had headed for the Indonesian hot-spot following the end of England's run in France, but the photographs which surfaced on Monday were accompanied by claims that the defender came off a surfboard. It was also alleged that he may have been stung by a jellyfish following his fall.

But United moved to clear up the issue soon after, explaining that Smalling had merely contracted food poisoning.

"Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday," read a club statement. "The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.
"Smalling is currently on vacation in Bali following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month."Chris would like to thank everyone for their well wishes."

The defender, who played 55 games for Manchester United last season but was sent off in the FA Cup final win against Crystal Palace, was an ever-present for England during the Euros.

He is due to return to United training before July 19, when the club jets off to China for clashes with Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City as part of the International Champions Cup.

Germany's Khedira ruled out of France semi-final

Sami Khedira is definitely out of Germany's Euro 2016 semi-final against hosts France, but head coach Joachim Low hopes the midfielder's tournament is not over. The 29-year-old had to be replaced by captain Bastian Schweinsteiger after only 16 minutes of the world champions' dramatic quarter-final against Italy on Saturday, which they eventually won 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Khedira, who has a groin problem, will miss the match with France in Marseille, but Low is not ruling him out of the Stade de France final on Sunday if Germany progress.

Germany are already without suspended defender Mats Hummels for the game against France, while striker Mario Gomez will not play again in the tournament due to a hamstring injury."Sami Khedira is definitely not able to play on Thursday," Low said. "We will do everything to see if he can play in a possible final.

"I will probably have to bring new players into the line-up. I trust all of my players, even those who have not seen game action."Schweinsteiger is battling a knee problem, although Low revealed there is a chance he could make a recovery to face France.

He said: "I won't play anyone who is not 100 per cent fit, but I hope Bastian Schweinsteiger is fit and can play.

"I made the mistake in the past of using a player that was not 100 per cent fit and I will not do it again."Schweinsteiger had the energy needed right until the end against Italy - he was impressive.

"We have a physically easier training session on Monday with more recovery than usual, except for the players who did not play on Saturday."Low added that the injured Gomez would remain with the squad in France to support them for the remainder of the tournament.

Stoke out to beat Valencia to Nani signing

    nani-cropped_1b9whyzxlasko12ckj95w24dhq.jpg

Stoke City are interested in signing Nani and hope the lure of the Premier League can entice him to choose them over Valencia, says assistant manager Mark Bowen.Nani has impressed in a more central role at Euro 2016, scoring twice and supplying two assists in Portugal's run to the semi-finals.

The 29-year-old was a Champions League and four-time Premier League winner during his time at Manchester United and last week spoke of his desire to play in England again.

The Fenerbahce forward was reported to be on the brink of an €8.5 million transfer to Valencia, but Bowen hopes Stoke can scupper such a deal.

"I know there is an interest there. Valencia are a big club, but it is the draw of the Premier League," he said on talkSPORT."He is player that Mark Hughes admires a lot and he has had a very good tournament. Without giving too much away, there is an interest there and let's see what happens.

"In my opinion, he left the Premier League far too early. He had his time at Manchester United and had been a big player for them and he seemed to drift away rather than step into another club in the Premier League. "If he is ready to come back, then I'm sure there will be a lot of clubs interested in him."

Liverpool in transfer roadblock with top targets

    3418582_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have been hindered in their pursuit of three primary transfer targets, with no progress on moves for Piotr Zielinski or Ben Chilwell, while Mahmoud Dahoud is set to stay at Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Reds have seen offers for the Poland international and the Leicester left-back rebuffed, while the Germany starlet will have to spend a further 12 months in the Bundesliga. As Goal revealed on June 12, the Merseysiders made Udinese an offer of £11 million - inclusive of extras - for Zielinski which was batted away.

The Serie A side had accepted a similar proposal from Napoli, with reports in Italy suggesting that Camilo Zuniga was part of the exchange, but Zielinski rejected their advances as he is intent on working under Jurgen Klopp.

Napoli are thought to have upped their wage package in the hopes of changing the midfielder's mind but it is understood that he is still pushing for a switch to Anfield.
Liverpool have found negotiations with Udinese - who, like Watford, are owned by the Pozzo family - difficult despite meeting their valuation for the player.

They have also offered a sell-on clause over and above matching market price but part of the pull of Napoli's bid is that Zuniga would be loaned to Walter Mazzarri's side.Despite Zielinski's desire to line up under Klopp in 2016-17, a deal cannot proceed without an agreement between Liverpool and Udinese.

The Italian club's sporting director, Nereo Bonato, also revealed that "Milan are interested in Zielinski. Yet aside from making enquiries in informal talks, they have not made any concrete offers".

Gladbach are also standing firm as they thwart any interest in the Dahoud this summer. As revealed in April, the Premier League side were willing to offer upwards of £25m for the 20-year-old but have been made aware they would need to wait a year to sign him.Meanwhile, valuations between the Reds and Leicester City for Chilwell still remain apart.

Liverpool tabled a £7m bid - £5m with a further £2m in extras - for the left-back but the the Premier League champions want £10m.

The 19-year-old only has 12 months remaining on his current deal and is yet to sign a new contract with the Foxes.

The Premier League champions are reluctant sellers and hope that Chilwell will agree an extension, while Liverpool are considering alternatives should Leicester not soften their stance.

The England Under-21s international has reported for the start of pre-season training at the club's Belvoir Drive ground, which began with a day of testing on Friday.

Guardiola: Why can't I play my style of football in the Premier League?

    pep-guardiola-manchester-city-03072016_zxlfw0flojua1ri6t33isx992.jpg

Pep Guardiola says he has moved to Manchester City to prove his doubters wrong and is confident his style of play will be successful in the Premier League.Guardiola started work with his new squad on Monday, 24 hours after being unveiled to supporters at the culmination of a weekend-long fan event.

City hope his arrival heralds a new era at the Etihad Stadium, and will back him in the transfer market as he looks to reshape the squad he inherited from Manuel Pellegrini. There is also the expectation of success, delivered by deploying an exciting, attacking brand of football.

Guardiola's critics, however, suggest his possession-based game, which he perfected with Barcelona and modified at Bayern Munich, is not suited to English football's demanding calendar.

And while the Catalan says he will always adapt his approach to the capabilities of his players, he sees no reason why he cannot get City playing the kind of football that has brought success to his former clubs, and is clearly driven by the thought of making the detractors eat their words.

"People say that Pep is not going to adapt in that way, so that is why I’m here, to try to do it," he said. "Some people are confident that it will go well and some say that the way I play will not be possible in the Premier League. I said to myself: 'Why not? Why not travel there and try it.' It’s a big challenge.

"Not just for me but in all my teams I’ve been able to involve the players and so it’s going to happen here as well. When that happens, everything will be easy.”
Guardiola has already signed Ilkay Gundogan and Nolito as he bids to build a squad capable of understanding his demands.

He has also demonstrated an ability to get the best out of many of the players he inherits, as well as developing young talent, and on several occasions already during his short time as City boss he has stressed the importance of getting to know his new players."They have to know and they will realise that I am here just thinking and working for them," he added.

"That is maybe the reason why some of them – because people who don’t play hate me! – but those who try to understand the game and why we do some things and not the other situation, we have a good relationship.

"At the end our job is to convince the other guy that this is the best way to cross the road. Tactics are important, as are training and facilities but in the end it is what I have to do to convince them. Maybe with you [Noel Gallagher], we take a beer in the bar and this will convince you and with other ones maybe we talk tactics, or with others maybe we don’t talk football. It depends on the player."

Guardiola gave Pedro and Sergio Busquets their breakthroughs at Barcelona and he has also been praised for the work he did with Bayern's young talents, including Joshua Kimmich.

There is an expectation that the coach will get the best from City's burgeoning youth academy, which boasts champion teams at every level, and he will run the rule over several of the stand-out graduates during pre-season.But he says he is no miracle worker, and that he can only use young players in the first team if they already have the right mentality and raw abilities.

"When the talent is the talent and you have the quality and enough passion to become something in world football, if they show me something they will be in my hands.

"It depends on the quality of the players. You cannot create something. I’m a good trainer but not good enough to convince the players who don’t have the quality that they can play at that level.

"First of all I have to know them. All of the big talents will join us in the pre-season and afterwards they have to show me how good they are. Afterwards my intuition will help me decide if they are able or not. Sometimes I will be right and maybe I can make a mistake but it depends on them. It depends on their quality. But I’m told the academy at Manchester City compared to other places has very, very good talent."Guardiola also appears ready to renew his old rivalry with Jose Mourinho, pointing out that City's Champions League position is stronger than United's.

Mourinho will conduct his first press conference as United boss on Tuesday, three days before Guardiola will face the press. But the Catalan has landed the first blow as the two prepare to lock horns in Manchester.

Insisting he was not concerned about the prospect of City finishing outside the top four last season, he was keen to point out that they must still go through a two-legged play-off to reach the Champions League - although that is favourable to playing in the Europa League.

“I wasn’t worried. I was coming to Manchester, I was never going to stay at home. But we are not in the Champions League, we have to be clear. That situation is now in this moment better than Manchester United’s though.”

OFFICIAL: Man City sign midfielder Zinchenko

    3418872_heroa.jpg

Manchester City have announced the signing of 19-year-old midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko from FC Ufa.

The youngster burst onto the scene with the Russian club this season and earned himself a place in Ukraine's Euro 2016 squad, playing in all three of their matches at the tournament.

The Ukrainian also gained fame in his home country as he became the youngest ever player to score for the nation, breaking a record previously held by Andriy Shevchenko with a goal in the 3-2 win over Romania in May.

Zinchenko, who plays on either flank, left Shakhtar Donetsk in 2015 and now finds himself working with Pep Guardiola at City, who have already signed Ilkay Gundogan, Aaron Mooy and Nolio in the current transfer window.

Gundogan: Germany the best team at Euro 2016

Ilkay Gundogan believes Germany have been the best side at Euro 2016 and believes they have a good chance of winning the tournament.

Germany booked their spot in the semi-finals on Saturday after they beat Italy on penalties and will face hosts France on Thursday to battle for a spot in the tournament decider, where Portugal or Wales will await.

The new Manchester City midfielder, who was unveiled at the Premier League side alongside Pep Guardiola on Sunday, admitted it has been tough watching the Euros from home as he recovers from a knee injury, but is proud of his country.

"It's not so easy to watch them playing and being successful, because I know exactly what the feeling is. It's really sad I can't take part in it, like two years ago at the World Cup," he said.

"It is not easy for me but I wish the team the best. I know all the players, all the coaches and that they deserve the best. They are the best team at the Euros and deserve to be in the semi-final. There's a good chance they could win the cup.

"I'm cheering for them and hope they win but it's not always easy to watch them playing such successful football from the outside and not being with the team."

OFFICIAL: Fernando Torres signs one-year contract with Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres has signed a one-year contract with Atletico Madrid following the expiration of his deal with AC Milan."I'm delighted to continue at home, the only place where I ever wanted to be, and it has finally come true," Torres told Atletico's official website.

"[I am] happy to be here. I've never had doubts about where I wanted to be during all this process in which we didn't know what was going to happen and, in the end, what matters is that I have achieved what I was expecting."Torres joined Atletico on an 18-month loan from AC Milan in January 2015 but scored just six times in 27 appearances before the end of the 2014-15 campaign.

The striker's difficulties continued the following season but, after a drought of more than four months, he scored his 100th goal for the club in the 3-1 victory over Eibar in February this year.

The 32-year-old then played a key role as Atletico pushed eventual winners Barcelona to the penultimate round in the race for La Liga and also reached the Champions League final, losing to Real Madrid.Torres joined Atletico as an 11-year-old and made his debut aged 17 in a match against Leganes in 2001.

Sporting director Jose Luis Caminero is delighted to have retained the services of such a player, who is an example to young players at the club."[This is] great news for everyone, since Fernando is part of the family and all the Atleticos are delighted with the fact that he can continue with us," he enthused.

"He knows the club perfectly and is a benchmark for all of his team-mates. The players trained in our academy have a model to follow and he always has good advice to give to them.

"He is a man with a tremendous experience, used to winning titles and competing at the highest level."

:(Del Bosque resignation from Spain confirmed

    yZ6s3N3.jpg

Vicente del Bosque's resignation as Spain coach has been confirmed, but the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is set to retain his services in a different capacity.

Following Spain's round-of-16 exit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Italy, Del Bosque announced his intention to leave the role. The 65-year-old's departure has now been formalised, but the RFEF will ensure his expertise remains with the federation.

"The president of the RFEF, Angel Maria Villar, and the national team coach, Vicente del Bosque, have held a meeting in Madrid on July 4 in which the coach informed the president of the RFEF of his decision not to continue at the head of the national team," an official statement read.

"Angel Maria Villar considers Vicente del Bosque part of Spanish football's heritage and has offered him the possibility of continuing in the federation, which has been answered positively."This offer will materialise in the coming weeks."

The coach revealed on Friday he informed every member of Spain's Euro 2016 campaign of his exit, except for goalkeeper Iker Casillas.Del Bosque claimed he had fallen out with Casillas after he picked David de Gea as his number one in France.

However, Casillas took to Twitter to show there were no hard feelings, posting:
"This morning, in the 'Ciudad del Futbol'. 25 years together, and more! A hug, coach! Good luck!"

Esta mañana, en la Ciudad del Fútbol. 25 años juntos y los que nos quedan! Un abrazo Mister! Suerte! pic.twitter.com/swqp5HNOxS

Del Bosque took charge of the Spain in 2008 after Luis Aragones led them to the 2008 European Championship – their first major international trophy in 44 years. The former Real Madrid coach built upon that achievement as the national team enjoyed their greatest period of success, winning the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

Del Bosque stayed on following a group-stage exit in World Cup 2014 and, following Spain's departure from France, has opted to step down, as expected.
