If Manchester United bid €120m for Pogba, Juventus must say no

Former Manchester boss Sir Alex Ferguson still likes to make out that Mino Raiola was to blame for Paul Pogba leaving Old Trafford four years ago.

"I distrusted him from the moment I met him," he wrote in his latest book, 'Leading', which was released last August. "We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign.

"But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco. He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to integrate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus."

Ferguson may appreciate Pogba the player, but, even now, it's clear that he doesn't understand Pogba the man. The Frenchman didn't leave United because of Raiola. He left because of Ferguson. Pogba wanted to play. Ferguson wouldn't let him - even in a league game against Blackburn in December 2011 when United were short on options in the middle of the park. Pogba understandably felt his big chance had finally arrived. Ferguson felt a right-back was a better option.

"Paul Scholes had retired; Darren Fletcher was injured - there was no one left to play in midfield," Pogba explained in an interview with Canal+ . "And I was training and I was beginning to get better bit by bit and the coach never stopped telling me, 'You're this far away.'

"And I didn't understand. This far away from what? Playing? From having some playing time? From getting on the field? Or what?.. And there was Rafael in midfield and I was disgusted."

It was at that moment that Pogba realised he would have to go elsewhere to realise his ambitions. And those ambitions are lofty. This is not a man motivated by money. He is driven by a determination to be the best he can be - and he firmly believes that he can be among the best to have ever played the game.

"At 23, I have won four league titles,” the Frenchman told La Repubblica earlier this year. “Only four. That is not enough for my ambition."I want to write a story. I want to become the greatest midfielder of all time. I want to become a legend like Pele or [Diego] Maradona. A legend of football."

Pogba's next move will thus be based on determining which club can provide him with the best platform on which to achieve that goal. As the reigning champions of Europe, Real Madrid obviously represent an attractive proposition, though they will be slightly discouraged by the fact that Raiola "didn’t like the attitude of Madrid" during previous transfer talks. Manchester United, meanwhile, cannot offer Champions League football but they can offer the chance to work with Jose Mourinho, exorbitant wages and a fee in excess of €120m.

Pogba's current employers would be foolish to dismiss such a bid out of hand. As former playmaker Andrea Pirlo pointed out earlier this year, "Juventus will want to keep him but sometimes you can get a transfer fee with which you can rebuild an entire team."

That is undeniably true. A market operator as canny as Beppe Marotta could do wonderful things with €120m. However, cashing in Pogba now would completely undermine Juve's bid to win the Champions League.

After five successive Scudetti, their primary focus is on conquering Europe. Pogba is a key part of the plan. He is the best midfielder in Serie A - and they have just signed the second-best, Miralem Pjanic, to play alongside him next season. That means that Massimiliano Allegri can now field a midfield of Pogba, Pjanic and Claudio Marchisio, with Alex Sandro and Dani Alves providing the penetration from out wide.

When one considers that Juve already boast the best back-line in the world (Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini) and Paulo Dybala in attack, it is clear that this Bianconeri side is arguably only one prolific striker shy of a Champions League-winning squad. Thus, if United do make a move, Juve must promptly ask Pogba why he would leave a club capable of winning the Champions League for one that won't even be in it next season.

The Italian champions must also play on the fact that they have provided him with everything he could have hoped to find in Turin: game time, trophies and the chance to play alongside the likes of Buffon and Pirlo, men he now describes as "role models".

"I want to achieve the same goals that they have in their careers," Pogba told the Gazzetta dello Sport in May. "I've improved in the last few years and I think that I had to because I was surrounded by great players that are humble, hard-working and make you work hard."

Juve should thus be optimistic about their chances of persuading Pogba to give them at least one more year. From a financial perspective, even Raiola would see the sense in Juve wanting to hold onto their most prized possession for another season. "If Bale is worth €100m, then Paul is worth at least twice as much." Raiola said that three years ago and his client's value hasn't gone down in the interim; it has sky rocketed. It is only going to rise over the next 12 months, too, such is the ridiculous state of the transfer market.

As Raiola himself recently pointed out, “Just look at a player (Michy Batshuayi) who is on the bench of Belgium and Marseille, but is being sold for €40m [to Chelsea]."

Juve and Pogba made what Raiola called "a pact" last year, agreeing that they would let their star man depart if they received "a suitable offer". Crazy as it may seem, €120m does not represent a suitable offer for a player who has not yet peaked.

Furthermore, Juve do not need to sell. They do not need the money. They need Pogba. The challenge will be persuading Pogba that he still needs them.

James: England need to have a foreign manager

Former England goalkeeper David James believes the Football Association should look abroad in their search for a new manager.

United States boss Jurgen Klinsmann is in talks to replace Roy Hodgson according to Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff while Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Laurent Blanc have been linked.

There has been debate as to whether the FA should opt for a local, with young Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe also a candidate.

But James, who earned 53 England caps between 1997 and 2010, told Omnisport: "I think England needs to go for a foreign manager.
"When you have basically the England squad playing for foreign managers in the Premier League, then you have an English manager trying to have English ideas against these foreign ideas, you end up with what he had in 2016, 2014.

"I think you bring a foreign coach in who has some similarities with the style of play English players have, and then we have the players, we have under 21 players who will come in, we have a good team."

Umtiti will have no problem against Ronaldo, says brother

France defender Samuel Umtiti will have "no problem" facing Cristiano Ronaldo in Sunday's Euro 2016 final, his brother Yannick has said.

The 22-year-old put in an accomplished display at the heart of the defence as the host nation saw off Germany 2-0 in the semi-final to set up a showdown with Portugal at Stade de France.

Umtiti agreed a transfer from Lyon to Barcelona last month after impressing for the last five years in Ligue 1, and is set to conclude the move once the tournament has come to an end.

And his older brother believes the chance to go up against Ronaldo on Sunday will be a useful learning curve for matches against Real Madrid next season, should he get the nod for the final.

"There's no problem having to defend against Cristiano," he told RAC1. "It will be magnificent to play against him. It will give Sam an idea of what he will encounter in the Clasico.

"Sam has fulfilled a dream. It's been a special week, joining Barca and playing in the semi-finals of the Euros. It's fantastic. We are really pleased to see Sam so happy. That's all we wanted. His dream was to play for Barca and he's completed it.

"He is ready to take on the pressure, and it won't be a problem for him or the family. He has big personality, is a good professional and he wants to improve and play with the best. He wants to win titles."

Yannick is hopeful that Didier Deschamps will have been impressed enough to keep faith with Umtiti in the starting line-up.

"I hope he will start again. For him it wouldn't be a problem. He's a person that knows what he has to do and how he has to prepare. I'm not worried about that."

Benteke, Balotelli and Ibe set to depart as Klopp trims Liverpool squad

    3189942_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has been unequivocal over the necessity to snip Liverpool’s squad, with the manager stating a 38-player roster is "100 per cent too much" for the new season. Kolo Toure, Jordan Rossiter, Jerome Sinclair, Joao Carlos Teixeira and Jose Enrique have already departed the club, with the German aware he has to greatly reduce the numbers further.

The Reds are without European commitments next season, and the 49-year-old wants a fit, focused and manageable group to tackle the domestic fixtures.

"All these players that have come back from loans, they are in the squad at the moment," Klopp said following the 1-0 friendly win over Tranmere on Friday night.

"That’s the situation, but we have to see. My job is to give them the best training I can, and then in the end, we may have to make decisions. "Today we had 20 [players], three or four at home - 24, 14 who were on travel [international duty] which is 38, and that is 100 per cent too much.

"We will have to make a few decisions, but every club who takes a player from us can be sure he has had two to three weeks of really hard, intensive training in his legs and will be as fit as possible."

Outgoings are set to rise considerably over the next few weeks. The Reds have accepted a bid of £15 million from Bournemouth for Jordon Ibe, an offer of £5.5 million for defender Martin Skrtel from Fenerbahce, and are in talks with Crystal Palace over the transfer of Christian Benteke, who is valued at £30 million.

Proposals tabled by Norwich and Bristol City for Sergi Canos, both at £2.5m, have also been given the thumbs up by Liverpool, with the player needing to decide his next destination.

The club have rebuffed an £8m approach for Joe Allen from Swansea, but the midfielder’s former side are expected to up their offer. The Wales international is of interest to Sevilla as well, and won’t be short of suitors this summer. The Europa League champions are also considering a move for Luis Alberto, who is priced upwards of £7m.

Fellow midfielder and the club’s longest-serving player, Lucas Leiva, has admitted his future is uncertain.

The Reds are also eager to get Mario Balotelli off their books, as his qualities are at odds with Klopp’s ‘full-throttle’ philosophy. The striker was not included in the squad at Tranmere as his Liverpool career nears its close.

There are still question marks over Lazar Markovic, while Andre Wisdom is likely to leave along with Tiago Ilori.

Danny Ward is set to join Huddersfield on a season-long loan, while Adam Bogdan also wants to move on to secure game-time, but could potentially stay on as third-choice goalkeeper.

Del Piero: Pogba facing tough decision over Man Utd move

    paul-pogba-france_ch9o3sie2mbo17fp7kxoio86l.jpg

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero wants Paul Pogba to remain with the club, but concedes the Frenchman faces a difficult decision over a potential move to Manchester United.Reports this week suggested United were set to bid £100 million for the midfielder they let go to Juve for nothing in 2012.

Such a fee would see the 23-year-old become the most expensive player in history, although he has more on his mind at present with France preparing to face Portugal in Sunday's Euro 2016 final.

"Pogba is a great player, has great potential and has already shown that to everybody," Del Piero, who spent almost 20 years at Juve, told Sky Sports.

"I don't know what's going to happen, there's a lot of talk and I think Juventus want to keep him for at least one more year.

"But definitely United are a huge club, it's also tough for him to decide what's best. As an Italian and a former Juventus player, I hope he stays for at least one more year."

Pepe back in full training ahead of Euro 2016 final

Portugal have been given a boost ahead of Sunday's Euro 2016 final after Pepe returned to full training. The 33-year-old has been training alone for most of this week as a result of the thigh injury which kept him out of the 2-0 semi-final win over Wales.

However, the Real Madrid centre-back took part in the full session with the rest of Fernando Santos' squad on Saturday in Marcoussis, and looks likely to be fit to play a part in the match with the hosts at Stade de France.

Barring the semi-final, Pepe has played in every game for Portugal at the tournament.

    Lozano cools Manchester United links

Pachuca forward Hirving Lozano has cooled speculation that he is on the verge of joining Manchester United.

The Old Trafford side have already brought in Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and manager Jose Mourinho stated earlier this week they are keen to sign a fourth player in the weeks to come.

Reports from Mexico suggested Lozano could be United's next new arrival, but the 20-year-old has made it clear he is unaware of any potential transfer.

"It's nice to hear people talk about a potential move to Manchester United, but it would have been better if it was actually a fact," Lozano told Record.

"I don't know anything about United's interest. If the club tell me anything, then we will see, but I don't know anything about it at this stage."I am at Pachuca now and we will see what happens in the future."Lozano has a contract with Pachuca until June 2020.

Renato Sanches is a beast - Hummels

Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has hailed Renato Sanches' physical strength and is confident the Portugal international will prove to be a great signing for the Bundesliga champions.

The 18-year-old has been one of the stars of Euro 2016, helping his nation to the final against France on Sunday and Hummels cannot wait to play alongside the midfielder at Bayern in 2016-17.

"Anybody who has seen Renato Sanches in action at Euro 2016 will have realised that he is a great player," Hummels was quoted as saying by Record ."He is a beast physically. He is very fast and strong. He is a real box-to-box midfielder.

"I cannot wait to team up with him at Bayern. He will be a great addition to the team and is going to give us a huge boost next term."I wish him all the best in the final, just like I wish [fellow Bayern Munich youngster] Kingsley Coman all the best, too."

Totti keen to close gap with Juventus and end Roma career on a high

    francesco-totti-roma_msav7ccobqm16iidyp7b9b8w.jpg

Francesco Totti hopes Roma can close the gap to Juventus in 2016-17 as he aims to end his career on a high.

The Stadio Olimpico side had to settle for third spot in the Serie A table last term, finishing 11 points behind Juve as the Turin club wrapped up a fifth consecutive Scudetto.

Totti has said he will remain at Roma for "one last season" after signing a one-year contract extension last month. And the 39-year-old is eyeing improvements in his final year before he begins his role as technical director.

"We are always talking about objectives at the start of a season and you are always gunning for the maximum," Totti told the official Roma website.

"But we all know it will be difficult. We have a team ahead of us that has proven over the past five years that they are stronger and more competitive."We all hope that we can close the gap with Juventus and challenge for a major trophy.

"It's also my 25th consecutive season with the same team, which I don't think many other players have done."That's a great source of pride for me. I see beautiful things when I look back on my career.

"I've won trophies. Some say just a few, but I actually think we won quite a lot. I hope I'll be able to add some more silverware this last season too."

Griezmann in the same league as Messi and Ronaldo, claims Sagna

Antoine Griezmann is in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, believes his France team-mate Bacary Sagna.

Griezmann faces Ronaldo in Sunday's Euro 2016 final as hosts France take on Portugal, with his six goals making him a near-certainty to claim the golden boot.

Sagna insists Griezmann should now be considered one of the best players in the world, noting the Atletico Madrid forward had to leave France to succeed."Antoine, to me, is right up there in the same league as Ronaldo and Lionel Messi," said Sagna.

"It's a kind of revenge for him after the French academies wouldn't take him.
"He made it the hard way and he deserves to be where he is."

Griezmann hit 22 La Liga goals for Atletico last season but was outscored by Ronaldo, who netted 35 times in the league for Real Madrid, while Messi was on target on 26 occasions for Barcelona.

Sagna highlighted Ronaldo as Portugal's main attacking threat, the 31-year-old scoring three goals at the finals despite having a mixed tournament."Ronaldo, we know him," said Sagna. "He's one of the best players in the world - if not the best - and he has worked very hard to get there.

"He's an exceptional player and it won't be easy. What you have to do is keep a close eye on him all the time, stay close to him and make sure you don't allow him too much space."

"He's a born winner" - Santos backs Ronaldo to lead Portugal for 10 more years

Fernando Santos believes Cristiano Ronaldo could give up to a decade more of service to the Portugal national team.Ronaldo will captain Santos' side in Sunday's Euro 2016 final against hosts France as he bids for his and his country's first major international honour.

The 31-year-old Real Madrid star, who is Portugal's all-time record appearance maker and goalscorer, could be presented with perfect moment with which to bid farewell if he hoists the Henri Delaunay Cup at the Stade de France.

But Santos insists his star player has much more to give.

"There's a final tomorrow so in that sense, yes, it will be a final for him." he said."As for Cristiano, he will play for another six, seven or 10 years. Tomorrow will not be his final match, I'm sure."

Taking on the job of Portugal coach reunited Santos with Ronaldo, who he oversaw briefly at Sporting Lisbon before the teenager moved to Manchester United in 2003.

The 61-year-old identified a fierce drive to improve and succeed that, 13 years on, he feels makes Ronaldo the ideal leader of his Portugal side."I coached him, not for very long, because a little bit later he went to Manchester and never came back," he told his pre-match news conference.

"He was amazing, he was talented and wanted to win. He was mentally strong. He is always trying to evolve. "He's a born winner. He always wants to be the best and be more and more perfect.

"Over these past two years, when we have worked together, he has been himself. He wants to be better and better, he is angry at himself when things don't go his way "The ability to captain our team is standing out now. I think that everyone acknowledges it now and that is the bottom line - the end result of his will to improve everything."

Manchester United told Alli would be a better signing than Pogba

    3065542_heroa.jpg

Dele Alli would be a better signing than Paul Pogba for Manchester United, according to Harry Redknapp.

United are reportedly in talks over a world-record £100 million deal for the Juventus midfielder, four years after letting him move to the Serie A champions on a free transfer.

But Redknapp believes the Tottenham midfielder would be a better long-term prospect than the France international.

“If I was the owners of Manchester United, I’d be very aggrieved in that we actually let him go on a free transfer and we’ve now got to pay £100 million to get him back,” Redknapp told Betsafe.

“I don’t think I’d like that, I think my pride would stop me from paying a player 100 million when we gave him away.

“He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that, but I wouldn’t swap him for Dele Alli. If you asked me, Dele Alli or Pogba who do you want? I’m taking Dele Alli in the long term.”

:yes:Cantona welcomes Zlatan to Man Utd: You can be the Prince!

    3409272_heroa.jpg

Eric Cantona has told Zlatan Ibrahimovic that joining Manchester United is the best choice he has ever made - but says there is only room for one king at Old Trafford.Ibrahimovic has regularly drawn comparisons to the former United striker for both his playing style and his personality.

He will now follow in Cantona's footsteps by turning out for the Red Devils next season and has been told by the man himself that he has finally found his “home”.“I have a personal message for Zlatan," Cantona said in his role as Eurosport's ‘Commissioner of Football’.

“You decided to go red. It is the best choice you ever made.“When you walk into the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. When you can feel the ghosts of the legends that have been here before.

“When you score a goal right in front of Stretford End. When you hear the crowd chanting your name.

“When your heart beats so strong that it bursts out of your chest. When you feel that you will love them as much as they will love you…“You will know, my friend, that you finally made it home.“Just one last thing: There can only be one king in Manchester. You can be the Prince if you want to.

“And the No.7 is yours if you are interested. That is my welcome gift to you.“The King is gone! Long live the Prince!”

Griezmann right to be compared to Zidane and Platini - Henry

France star Antoine Griezmann deserves to be compared to Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini, according to Thierry Henry.

Griezmann has been the star of Euro 2016, scoring six times to lead France into Sunday's final against Portugal in Paris.

Many have drawn parallels between the Atletico Madrid man and his legendary compatriots Zidane and Platini – the latter being the only one to score more at a single European Championship with nine in 1984.

Henry, a 123-time France international, said Griezmann's performances warranted the plaudits.

"He deserves it, at the moment. How far he's going to take it, that's up to him. Hopefully he's going to take it as far as Sunday," he told the BBC."We have a guy that can make us win again, why not?

"If we win, you're going to be almost sure that it's because Antoine Griezmann scored."Standing between Griezmann, France and a first major title since Euro 2000 are Portugal and star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored three times at the tournament so far, although Fernando Santos' men have been criticised for their style of play.

However, Henry warned the Real Madrid star only needed a couple of moments to potentially be decisive."You know in the game he's going to have chances. Now you have to hope that he's not going to score," the Arsenal great said.

"Ronaldo can be almost anonymous in the game, but he still knows that he's going to have one or two chances to score the goal."It's very difficult to stop a guy like that."

'Manchester United should spend £100m Pogba money on Payet and Kante'

    3300002_heroa.jpg

Manchester United should sign N’Golo Kante and Dimitri Payet with the money they are spending on Paul Pogba, according to Stan Collymore.

United are reportedly in talks over a world-record £100 million deal for the Juventus midfielder, who would be Jose Mourinho’s fourth summer signing since his arrival at Old Trafford.

Pogba has been criticised for his form during Euro 2016 and Collymore believes United should be targeting two other players who have starred for France this summer.

“I don’t even think he’s [Pogba] worth £70m or £75m, if I’m being honest,” the former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker wrote in his column for the Sunday Mirror.

The smarter move from Mourinho would be to sign two other members of the France team who’ll take on Portugal in the Euro 2016 final on Sunday night – N’Golo Kante and Dimitri Payet instead.
“Because what United need is to be good in the here and now of this season and, while I have no doubt Pogba could become one of the best midfielders on the planet in time, I don’t think he’d guarantee the immediate success in the way those two would.“Kante, in terms of the way he breaks down play and his own athleticism, would be a better signing.

“And if you bought Kante and Payet, you’d probably still have £20m to £40m left for another signing.”
