No Arsenal offer for Lacazette, says Aulas

    alexandre-lacazette_1livd0sf96k7y1waecmp0fafcb.jpg

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas believes Alexandre Lacazette will stay at the Ligue 1 club, insisting there has been no offer from Arsenal.

Lacazette, a 10-time France international, has been linked with a move away after 48 league goals in two seasons for his boyhood club.

Reports suggested the 25-year-old was a target for Premier League outfit Arsenal, with some saying the parties were in talks. However, Aulas said there had been no offers – and believes Lacazette will remain at Lyon.

"I saw Arsene [Wenger, Arsenal manager] during France matches and he has not told me," Aulas told L'Equipe.

"I don't think it's something and it seems Alex wants to spend this season with Lyon in the new stadium."He wants to know an adventure in the Champions League could be much better than last season. I think he will stay with us and we are very happy."

One player who could be set for a departure from Lyon is Mathieu Valbuena, a 52-time France international.Aulas confirmed the 31-year-old attacker was a target for Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

"There is contact, it's true," he said.

Angel-faced Griezmann has been better than Ronaldo, says Lineker

France’s on-fire striker Antoine Griezmann has outperformed Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2016, according to former England striker Gary Lineker.

The Atletico Madrid frontman scored a double as the hosts recorded a 2-0 victory over Germany in the semi-final to set up Sunday’s showpiece with Portugal. And with six goals to his name, the 25-year-old has now scored double the amount as his nearest competitors, including Ronaldo.

“Antoine Griezmann will unquestionably be the player of the tournament, unless Ronaldo scores a hat-trick in the final,” wrote Lineker in his Mail on Sunday column.
“He's been a breath of fresh air. He's finished beautifully, his movement is great, as is his touch and he plays delightful football.

“He's diminutive, with that angel-like face. And he's enjoying it. But then you do when it's going well - it's easy to enjoy when the goals are going in and the French team are really enjoying the atmosphere in the stadiums and cities where they play.”

While Griezmann has led the charge in attack, Manchester United-target Paul Pogba has pulled the strings in midfield for France. However, Lineker believes the 23-year-old has some way to go to match other French legends such as Zinedine Zidane.

“Paul Pogba is still very young at 23. He's far from a Zinedine Zidane or a Michel Platini at present,” he wrote.“He could turn into that. You can see there's a lot of ability there. He covers the ground well, his technique is very good and he's a threat in the air.

“It's whether he takes the next step up to be a great player. He clearly has bags of potential.”

Maradona: Ronaldo won't get a better shot at glory

Cristiano Ronaldo's desperation to win a major international title could decide Sunday's Euro 2016 final between Portugal and France, according to Diego Maradona.

Ronaldo and Co. face the tournament hosts in Paris on Sunday, with Portugal looking to win their first major trophy.

Fernando Santos' have been criticised for their style of play in reaching the decider, but football great Maradona feels Portugal are capable of causing an upset – if Ronaldo wants it enough.

"It's not all about strategy in big games. Wanting something badly is big motivation," he wrote in The Times of India.
"Playing a second final at 31, Ronaldo won't get a better chance at international glory."How badly he wants it could determine the distance between France and yet another successful home run."

While Ronaldo has done enough for Portugal, having scored three goals so far in the competition, Antoine Griezmann has been the star of Euro 2016 with six goals, and Maradona feels Portugal must be careful when facing the Atletico Madrid forward.

He added: "Like France thinking of containing CR7, Portugal will be wary of AG7. Griezmann has a lovely touch, a sublime left foot, and his six goals have lit up the tournament."They carry the confidence of dumping out Germany, while Portugal have had an additional day of rest, with time to think about the blue wave about to test their defence."

Maradona also praised Paul Pogba and feels the Juventus midfielder is nearing his best form heading into the final.

"They have resources in midfield and attack to put Portugal under pressure," the 1986 Argentina World Cup winner wrote."Pogba is peaking at the right time. The trick he displayed before chipping the ball in for the second goal [against Germany] was about amazing skills, other than confidence.

"[Blaise] Matuidi and [Moussa] Sissoko are the spoilers in midfield, where [Dimitri] Payet will have a more attacking role, after having fallen back deeper in the semi-final.

"France's strength lies in this department, that harries the opponent and takes the game forward."

:shocked:Henry: Portugal can make Euro 2016 final ugly

Thierry Henry has warned France that Portugal could make the Euro 2016 final ugly at Stade de France.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona attacker, who won World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000 in a 123-cap Les Bleus career, also acknowledged that Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is almost impossible to subdue for a full match.

However, Henry thinks the feel-good factor and team spirit in France's camp will be enough to get his nation over the line."Portugal can make the game ugly - they know how to play like that," Henry, France's record goalscorer, told BBC Sport .

"Wales did a good job against Ronaldo. He was nowhere to be seen - and then 1-0. It looked like he was getting annoyed, but how do you stop that?
"You know in the game he will have chances. Sometimes you have players who need to grow into the game, get the rhythm. Ronaldo can be anonymous, lose a lot of balls, but he still knows that he can score. He stays focused."I played with striker David Trezeguet, who was outstanding at that. He might not touch the ball all game but he could score a goal.

"When we are at home and we want to do something together, with all the diversity we have we are hard to beat. There is definitely something happening. Now for the last hurdle: Ronaldo and Portugal.

"We won the Euros in 1984 and 16 years later in 2000. Now it is 16 years later from then. We have a habit of winning tournaments at home. There is something about our culture.

"Six years ago everyone was laughing at us. Now we need that cup at the end to show how far we have come."

Henry also hailed the leadership of head coach Didier Deschamps and praised his former team-mate for learning from his mistakes. He continued: "When you have a guy who has won battles before as a leader, you are going to follow him, simple as that.

"He made some mistakes through the group stage - but he wasn't afraid to change at half-time, to leave players on the bench. He has a winning mentality. On top of everything, when he gives you the plan and it works, you follow that guy until you die. Hopefully we can then win the war.

"If you have a plan, a philosophy and a leader, you can be calm when things are going wrong. There is security in the group. It helps when you win.""Six years ago everyone was laughing at us. Now we need that cup at the end to show how far we have come."

Neymar: Football without Messi isn't football

    lionel-messi-neymar-barcelona-getafe-12032016_dy114qpg70q11qtvuycxnxh9u.jpg

Barcelona star Neymar says it is impossible not to admire Lionel Messi, adding that the sport would be completely different without the Argentine icon.

Messi brought an end to his international career this summer after suffering a third consecutive final defeat in as many years with the Albiceleste - this time losing out on penalties to Chile in the Copa America Centenario, sending his own spot kick sailing over the bar.

While his time with the national team has failed to live up to expectation, Messi's
club career has been nothing short of phenomenal, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner claiming four Champions League titles, three Club World Cups and eight Liga crowns.

Messi's summer got worse this week when he was handed a 21-month prison sentence after he was convicted of tax evasion. And his Barca team-mate believes that, despite his troubles this year, he has changed football.

"I respect his decision to retire, but football without Messi isn't football, it's hard to imagine it without him," Neymar told Marca."If you like football at all, then you can't help but admire Messi and everything he's achieved for Argentina and Barcelona."

Messi scored 55 goals in 113 appearances for Argentina and scored 41 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions for Barca last season.

Kante: France still have a job to do at Euro 2016

France may be favourites to beat Portugal in Sunday’s final and lift the Euro 2016 title on home soil, but the hosts still have to see the job through, insists midfielder N’Golo Kante.

While Les Bleus topped their group before dispatching Ireland and World Cup winners Germany in 90 minutes, Portugal have grinded their way to the showpiece occasion, having failed to win in normal time until a 2-0 victory over Wales in the semi-final.

But Kante, who can complete a dream season following his Premier League-winning exploits with Leicester City, refuses to underestimate Fernando Santos’ side“We have got better and better in this tournament and now we want to go the final and win. We have a job to finish,” he said.

“For me to win the Premier League with Leicester and Euro 2016 with France would be a dream come true.

"I would never have believed it a year ago. It has been a year I could never forget.
"We did it at Leicester and I want to do the same with my country.”

Ronaldo has sacrificed himself for the good of the team, says Futre

Cristiano Ronaldo's has been sacrificing himself for the good of the team at Euro 2016, according to former Portugal international Paulo Futre. The Real Madrid forward has captained his side to a second major final, scoring three goals along the way.

And, while Futre concedes that Ronaldo has not been at his best in the tournament so far, he has been impressed by the star's maturity."We know Cristiano is not fine, he's at 50 per cent of his abilities, but Cristiano is still Cristiano," he told Cadena COPE.

"Cristiano is sacrificing himself, he's working a lot for the team; he's not angry."Against Croatia, he applauded [Ricardo] Quaresma's goal at the 117th minute. When he doesn't score he's usually angry, but not now. He works a lot, also defending."

Futre has also noted a difference between this tournament and the 2012 edition, with Ronaldo's contrasting penalty shootout contributions a clear indicator of his growth.

Four years ago, the 31-year-old was set to take Portugal's fifth penalty against Spain in the semi-finals, but never got the opportunity as his team crashed out.In the quarter-finals of this competition, Ronaldo stepped up first against Poland to set Portugal on their way to the last four.

"You can see he's an authentic leader - for example, when he asked [Joao] Moutinho to take the [final] penalty," Futre continued."It was something normal, he [Moutinho] is an experienced player but he failed with his penalty four years ago against Spain during the semi-final.

"He has fought against his trauma. Cristiano acted as an authentic leader."Maybe Cristiano has a good day [in the final], he scores three goals and it's over."

Carrick expecting spicy pre-season friendly with Man City

    michael-carrick-europa-league-liverpool-v-manchester-united-100316_1pthfg3gpeurw1nhtmqx41josi.jpg

Michael Carrick is expecting a typically feisty encounter when Manchester United meet rivals Manchester City in a friendly in China later this month. The Red Devils have two International Champions Cup fixtures in the Far East, facing Borussia Dortmund and then City.

And veteran midfielder Carrick is expecting a lively affair between the two Manchester clubs - no doubt aggravated by the respective arrivals of managerial rivals Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola."I'm sure there will be a little bit of added spice for a pre-season friendly and it'll be great for the fans out there to witness," he told the club's official website.

"The support we get out there is incredible so the atmosphere will go up a notch I'm sure. "Pre-season is an important time for the team and for the players, making sure that you get to that level that you need to be at for the start of the season."

The England international also foresees a tough test against Dortmund, from whom United recently signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan."They're a terrific team who did well in last season's Bundesliga and I'm sure it'll be a good game for us," Carrick added.

"Playing against them will allow us, to a certain extent, judge where we're at."It's difficult to predict exactly what the games will be like because a lot will depend on which players are on display.

"But we know the games will be tough as we're talking about two great teams here. I'm sure they will be great games to watch."

Inter want to sell Icardi, Wanda Nara reveals

    mauroicardi-cropped_15c015rgzal9j16zwqwb7i9s3e.jpg

Mauro Icardi's wife and agent Wanda Nara has revealed Inter have put the Argentine forward up for sale.

Icardi was appointed as Inter's captain at the start of the 2015-16 season, but he has courted interest from several clubs after scoring 16 goals in 33 league games for his side.

It was reported in AS that Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal for the 23-year-old, and Nara has revealed that the Nerazzurri are set to cash in on the interest, though she hopes they will ask for a fair price.

"From what I can see, Inter have put Icardi up for sale," Nara told calciomercato.com. "There are many clubs interested. We will evaluate the situation with all due respect for everyone.

"Mauro would be very sad to leave Inter, but we've understood the club's economic situation and evidently they cannot hold Icardi back."There is no release clause in his contract and we hope Inter won't ask for a sum that is outside the market value, but rather suited to his contract."

Icardi, who previously stated that he would "absolutely" be staying at San Siro, is said to have attracted interest from Arsenal, Atletico and Tottenham among others.

Fowler: Pogba is overrated and selfish

France’s Paul Pogba is ‘massively overrated’ and has been average at the European Championships, according to Robbie Fowler.

In a brutally honest column written ahead of Les Bleus’ showpiece with Portugal on Sunday, the former England striker also branded the £100m-rated Juventus midfielder as a ‘selfish’ player who doesn’t score a lot of goals.

“Manchester United’s pursuit of Paul Pogba is a case of them showing their teeth... because they can,” he wrote for the Mirror.

“It is a massive statement of intent from the most financially powerful club in the world, designed, I suspect, to show they still have plenty of bite in the transfer market.“But £100m? C’mon. I’m sorry, but Pogba is massively overrated. Look, he must be a good player because so many people in the game speak about his qualities and you don’t get to the top in Italy without having talent.

“I just don’t see it. He hasn’t really stood out in Europe and most certainly not at these European Championships.

“He’s done OK against pretty limited opposition for France, but what does he bring? Energy and athleticism to midfield, but so does N’Golo Kante.“He’s skilful but selfish, not many goals, which for me is a fundamental problem if you’re going to spend £100m on him.”
