Griezmann wins Euro 2016 best player award

France forward Antoine Griezmann has won the award for Euro 2016 Player of the Tournament.

UEFA has announced that the 25-year-old has been voted as the winner by their team of 13 technical observers, which includes Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes.

Griezmann, who signed a new long-term deal at Atletico Madrid in June, was also named in the team of the tournament after scoring six goals to win the competition's Golden Boot.

He could not find the net in Sunday's final, though, as hosts France went down to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Portugal thanks to substitute Eder's extra-time winner.

UEFA's chief technical officer Ioan Lupescu said: "Antoine Griezmann was a threat in every game he played. "He works hard for his team and possesses technique, vision and quality finishing. The technical observers were in unanimous agreement that he was the tournament's outstanding player."

Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches, meanwhile, was named as the tournament's best young player.

Renato Sanches named Euro 2016 Young Player of the Tournament

    renatosanches-cropped_1w71lz46bnswt1hahwnl3vnflv.jpg

Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches has been named as Euro 2016's Young Player of the Tournament.

Sanches beat international team-mate Raphael Guerreiro and his Bayern Munich colleague, France winger Kingsley Coman, to the award, which is open to players born in 1994 or later and selected by UEFA technical observers including Alex Ferguson.

The new Bayern signing appeared in six of the Selecao's seven matches at the tournament in France, scoring his first international goal in the quarter-final against Poland.

Sanches only had five caps coming into the tournament but has already established himself as a star of Portugal's present and future.

Having only made his senior debut for Benfica as recently as October 2015, the 18-year-old completed his remarkable first season by playing for 79 minutes of Sunday's win over France in the final.

Barcelona defend social media support of 'unfairly treated' Messi

    lionelmessi-cropped_7qdj4i3kkkog13qlul7n2xqr6.jpg

A Barcelona spokesperson has defended the club's social media campaign in support of Lionel Messi after the forward received a 21-month jail sentence from a Spanish court for being found guilty of fiscal fraud.

In addition to the sentence - Messi is unlikely to spend any time in prison as any sentence of less than two years for non-violent offences can be served under probation according to Spanish law - the Argentinian was fined €2million for three counts of tax fraud, though he will appeal his conviction at the Supreme Court.

Barca subsequently set up a social media campaign for fans to back Messi, a move that drew criticism. However, Josep Vives claims the 29-year-old has been treated unfairly and defended the club's commitment to showing solidarity with their talisman.

"Messi is being treated unfairly and the club is taking a position to defend him. Our conscience is clear and we will not back down," said spokesperson Vives.

"We are talking about Messi, a lad who was 19 years of age when he signed those contracts and it has been demonstrated that he did not know how it worked at that moment."He focused on playing football and signed contracts based on the trust placed in financial advisors, who work for him, looking after his earnings.

"The Finance Ministry, who defend people's wellbeing, do not accuse Messi because they understand there is no legal basis to accuse him."They do it because they are convinced that there is no legal case against Messi. Thus, they maintain the legal position of the state in the name of the Tax Office and that in other similar cases it turns out that another criteria has been applied to that of Messi."That is not open to interpretation, these are empirical, objective facts. And here is where the club believes the injustice begins.

"There have been other famous figures who have not been through the same situation as Messi. That disdain we do not want for any fan, member or Messi either."For that reason we have launched the campaign and we will go beyond that because it is just and we will support Messi in any action he takes from now on.We believe in this."

Inter deny Icardi is up for sale

    mauroicardi-cropped_styq812wnno41pda36md13n6m.jpg

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has denied that striker Mauro Icardi is up for sale.Icardi's wife and agent Wanda Nara claimed on Sunday that Inter had put the captain up for sale amid reported interest from Atletico Madrid.

However, Ausilio has insisted there are no plans to let the 23-year-old Argentinian, who signed a new four-year contract at San Siro in June 2015, leave.Asked about Nara's comments, Ausilio said: "I'm not angry about it, I just would have preferred to spend my Sunday differently.

"It made me smile to be honest, but I do think it was the wrong time and the wrong place. You always have the opportunity to discuss these things but I feel it was done the wrong way. It should be done in private.

"In any case, one day of headlines is enough; let's talk about things that matter.Icardi signed a new contract a year ago, we've made him our captain and he's not for sale. Anything else is just talk."

Ausilio revealed Inter hold an interest in Portugal and Sporting midfielder Joao Mario, while he does not feel Palmeiras forward Gabriel Jesus admitting he would like to play for the Serie A club last week gives them the upper hand in the race for his signature.

The sporting director also confirmed Inter's interest in Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi had ceased, while revealing there has been no movement on the potential signing of Lazio ace Antonio Candreva.

"Joao Mario is a good player but he's very expensive. We're tracking him but we're looking at other players too," Ausilio said."As for Gabriel Jesus, we can't say we hold an advantage because the situation is in the hands of his club and the player himself.

"About 10 of the world's biggest clubs are after him and we're one of them. The competition for his signature is fierce."We just need to make a couple of additions and we know exactly which areas we're looking at. We're not in any rush because the transfer window has only just opened.

"We met with Sassuolo to inquire over Domenico Berardi's availability, plus a few other players. The response was negative and the conversation finished there."We haven't put an offer on the table for Antonio Candreva. His technical ability is not in question but you have to take other things into consideration."

Ausilio refuted reports linking centre-back Jeison Murillo with a move away from San Siro, but admitted talks with Roma regarding the transfer of Juan Jesus are ongoing.

"There have never been talks over Jeison Murillo, but there's been contact with Roma over Juan Jesus," he said."That doesn't mean anything has been done, however. We're still talking, let's wait and see."

Quaresma: Ronaldo is the only person I admire in football

Ricardo Quaresma has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as the only person in football he admires after Portugal's Euro 2016 victory.Quaresma replaced Ronaldo in the first half of the final against France after the captain suffered a knee injury.

The Real Madrid star re-emerged from the dressing room to encourage his team-mates from the sidelines, however, and Eder's goal in extra time secured a 1-0 win and the trophy.

"Even with the injury [Ronaldo] never stopped, he always supported the team and that's why I say, not just as a friend, that he is the only person I admire in football," Quaresma told O Jogo. "I admire the strength he has."

He added: "We have a great captain, it is an honour to play alongside him and have him in the national team and all Portuguese people should be proud to have Cristiano.

"[His critics] speak of him and do not know him as a person. He is a great person, a great captain and he deserves everything he has achieved in football. He always has confidence and is positive and that's what he gave us."

Giggs: I laughed the first time I saw Ronaldo play!

    3444362_heroa.jpg

Ryan Giggs has revealed he knew Cristiano Ronaldo was going to be special when he saw him turn John O'Shea inside out as as a young whippersnapper for Sporting against Manchester United in 2003.

Ronaldo secured a move to United after his dazzling display against them in a friendly clash and has since gone on to become one of the greatest footballers in history.

And Giggs, who played alongside Ronaldo for six years before he left to join Real Madrid, has opened up about the first time he saw the Portugal star play, saying the sight of him tearing O'Shea apart had him chuckling away on the substitutes bench!

“You see Ronaldo get the ball, and you see him turn John O'Shea inside out, and you're having a little giggle to yourself,” Giggs told ITV ahead of Portugal's 2-0 win over France in Euro 2016 final.

“He just lit up the game, all the lads were talking to him after the game and I remember we were waiting on the coach and everybody was wondering what we were waiting for.

“And then we just got a little whisper that the deal was being done for £13 million.”

West Ham won't listen to offers under £50m for Payet - Gold

    payet-cropped_1ofouk4m32vl918x3z6q6f4xoi.jpg

West Ham will not listen to offers under £50 million for Dimitri Payet, says co-chairman David Gold.

Payet enjoyed a superb first season with West Ham, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists, before going on to sparkle for France at Euro 2016 this summer. The midfielder scored three and set up two more to help the host nation reach the final, which they lost 2-0 against Portugal on Sunday.

Payet's displays for France will have only fuelled interest in his services, with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain all reportedly interested in him prior to the Euros.

But when speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Gold said: "The super-clubs would come after a player of his ability. We wouldn't even listen to any offer under £50million and even then we need to keep our best players so we just don't welcome any offers at all for Dimitri."He's instrumental, he's important to us, the team is built round him and he's not for sale."

Asked how West Ham can keep the former Saint-Etienne, Lille and Marseille man at the club, Gold replied: "You make him as happy as you can, he has a great relationship with the manager, which is very, very important to a player."He's settled in London with this family, the fans adore him and we're going to the Olympic Stadium.

"We've done everything we possibly could do. I'm hoping that will be enough."

Ignore the 'experts' - Man Utd target Pogba worth every penny of €120m

    3444762_heroa.jpg

Once upon a time, major international tournaments told us all we knew about the world’s greatest footballers. Before mega-money television deals and the vast growth of the internet, opinions of players across the globe were generally formed on their performances over four-week periods once every two years at a World Cup or a European Championship.

Had Paul Pogba been a footballer in the 1970s his form at this summer’s Euros might well have provided an irretrievable body blow to his reputation, with his failure to step up over the past month in France having left many wondering whether he really is as good as has been claimed.

But no longer does TV commentary comes down telephone lines and nor is foreign club football delivered in two-minute highlights. As such, those Manchester United fans suddenly wondering whether their club’s pursuit of Pogba is the appropriate next step in the Jose Mourinho masterplan can be sure that the 23-year-old’s form over the last month is by no means the extent of his quality.

From our privileged position in the technology-heavy modern world we have seen Pogba excel on the world stage time and again since arriving at Juventus in 2012, quickly forcing his way into a previously untouchable Bianconeri midfield on the road to the forefront of the planet’s footballing consciousness.

He has played a huge part in four successive Serie A titles, helped them become a consistently dominant force domestically and a massive name in Europe once more. Pogba has become one of the most talked-about names in the game today and has been tipped for a world-record transfer fee.

None of this has happened by accident. With power, poise, a deft touch, an eye for goal and boundless energy, he has earned his place among the list of current stars at the top end of the sport.

While Sir Alex Ferguson decided that Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola were too divisive a partnership to work with during his reign at Old Trafford, the Frenchman’s quality was never truly questioned. When Fergie selected right-back Rafael in midfield over Pogba against Blackburn Rovers in December 2011, it was more a sign he was unhappy with the player’s baggage than unimpressed with his potential.

As a youngster coming through the ranks with United and France his greatest flaw was his tendency to switch off when things got a little too easy for him, but more recently it has been unrealistic expectations that have drawn out critics.

"Too much responsibility has been placed on his shoulders, so much that a normal 22-year-old would struggle to cope," Massimiliano Allegri said as Juventus struggled at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign following a summer exodus of star names.

"Nobody is asking Pogba to score three goals per game or to win games single-handedly. We just ask Paul to play as he knows how to, a bit more carefree, and make the mistakes a normal 22-year-old makes. That's it. It is easy to understand."

It appeared to be much the same kind of situation at Euro 2016. With United looking to re-employ Pogba and Real Madrid also being credited with serious interest, the world was watching him more closely than ever before. With a price tag of €120 million hanging around his neck, this was always likely to be a tournament at which French failure would not reflect well on the midfielder.

His stuttering run with France rightly drew question marks, but comments from the likes of Gary Lineker ("doesn't score many, doesn't create much and not great defensively") and Harry Redknapp ("if you asked me, 'Dele Alli or Pogba, who do you want?' I'm taking Dele Alli in the long term") say more about some people’s ignorance than they do about a youngster playing out of position in the pressure-cooker environment of a home championship.

Just as Alli or Harry Kane's poor summer with England should not dampen the hype around two of the Premier League’s hottest prospects and Leicester City's extraordinary success should not be celebrated any less in light of Portugal's own first-time triumph, Pogba's star must not be wrested artificially from its rightful position high in the sky.

At the age of 23, he is one of the biggest talents in the modern game and will only get better. If anything, a move away from Juventus will only increase his chances of becoming one of the 21st century’s greats, with new challenges bringing further chances to demonstrate his ability.

But in the same way that Juve were not too blinkered to write Pogba off as somebody Ferguson would not even choose ahead of Rafael in midfield, potential buyers must not simply cast the Frenchman aside on the basis of four short weeks which followed four long years of excellence.

Sissoko unhappy with Newcastle asking price

    moussa-sissoko-cropped_1abh38dwpeedt1sskf3e8s173s.jpg

Moussa Sissoko is unhappy with Newcastle United's reluctance to allow him to leave the club ahead of the 2016-17 campaign, according to his representative.
The France international impressed at Euro 2016 and has been linked with a number of clubs following the Magpies' relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle have no intention of letting him go on the cheap, though, and have reportedly set an asking price in the region of £35 million for the 26-year-old, despite an earlier promise that Sissoko could leave for about half that fee.

"We do not understand Newcastle. We agreed last year that Moussa would stay for one more year to help the team. He has given his all for the club," the midfielder's representative told Foot Mercato."We never even talked about a higher asking price. The club always said they would allow Moussa to leave for a fee between €18 million and €25m.

"We hope Rafa Benitez and Newcastle will be more reasonable again so we can resolve Moussa's future. He has always been loyal and respectful toward the club.
"There are clubs that have approached us and Newcastle. We hope everything goes well."

    OFFICIAL: Tottenham complete Janssen deal

    3450072_heroa.jpg

Tottenham have signed Netherlands international Vincent Janssen on a four-year deal, the club have confirmed.

Spurs have long been linked with a move for the 22-year-old striker, who was top scorer in the Eredivisie last season, and have now completed the deal after reaching an agreement with AZ Alkmaar.

Reports suggest that Spurs have paid £18.8 million for Janssen, and the striker will provide support to Harry Kane as Mauricio Pochettino's side again attempt to mount a title challenge in 2016-17.

“I'm incredible happy that I can make this step to Tottenham Hotspur," Janssen told AZ's official website.

"I'm glad the clubs finally agreed [a deal]. I've shaked everyone's hands and I leave via the front door. I think it's a great deal for all three parties. I'm leaving for a great football nation, and will play in the Champions League.

2I had the best football year of my life with AZ. The people I've worked with were fantastisc. My step to AZ was a fine step, I can only look back to my time in Alkmaar with a positive feeling."

Janssen becomes Spurs' second signing of the summer, following the arrival of midfielder Victor Wanyama from Southampton.

    Neymar reveals retirement fear

    neymar-cropped_vyozrswc2fw71fwfgwifs3bzx.jpg

Barcelona star Neymar has revealed he feared his career could be over after he sustained a serious back injury at the 2014 World Cup that ended his dream of being crowned world champion on home soil.

The attacker suffered the injury in Brazil's quarter-final win over Colombia following a reckless challenge from Camilo Zuniga and consequently missed the remainder of the tournament.

Neymar has not forgotten the incident and admits it was one of the worst moments of his career."I have had a number of difficult moments in my career, but what happened during the World Cup in Brazil is the most painful memory," the 24-year-old was quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It was my childhood dream to become world champion on home soil, but it all went wrong because of an injury that could have forced me to leave football altogether.

"That was a really difficult week for me. Fortunately I was close to my friends and family. It's important to be able to call on the help of your beloved ones in a moment like that."

Brazil were beaten 7-1 by Germany in Neymar's absence, before losing the match for third place against Netherlands 3-0.

:DMourinho reveals his biggest pet peeve in football

    3422612_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has revealed that waiting around for evening kick-offs is one of his biggest pet peeves in football.

The Portuguese was recently unveiled as Manchester United's new manager as he returns to a Premier League dug out eight months on from his sacking by Chelsea.

But it is not all smiles for Mourinho who, speaking at an adidas event, says an early kick-off is his preference when looking at the fixture list as he can enjoy a "rich breakfast" before game time.

"If you ask me, the one I really love is the early kick-off," he told reporters.

"I love that. I love to, early in the morning, go for a rich breakfast – then go to the bus, go to the game, play the game, win if possible, go home and game over – I like it.

"I don't like to wait for matches. In my time in Spain, I sometimes had late matches, because of the weather obviously. ‘I hate these. I hate to wait a long day for a match.

"But, when the game starts, the game starts. And you know that for these 90 minutes, you have to enjoy and do your best."

Giroud happy to leave Arsenal in Higuain swap, says agent

    3177302_heroa.jpg

Olivier Giroud is open to leaving Arsenal in a swap deal involving Gonzalo Higuain, the striker's agent has confirmed.

Reports in Italy on Tuesday claimed Arsene Wenger hopes to agree a deal worth €50 million plus Giroud with Napoli for the Argentina international having previously missed out on Jamie Vardy.

Higuain has been linked with a move to the Premier League since his spell at Real Madrid and Giroud's agent Michael Manuello insists his client would not stand in the Argentine's way."If he was asked to leave, then we would evaluate his options," Manuello told Radio CRC.

"There is no fear from Olivier about possibly going to Napoli: it is a magnificent city. In Campania, my client could lead a wonderful life."Not to mention that the type of game played by [coach Maurizio] Sarri could enhance the quality of a centre forward like him."

He added: "Olivier is an Arsenal player. So far there has not been any communication [with Arsenal] or contact with Napoli. If Arsenal tell us to leave, then things change."

Chelsea confirm date for Antonio Conte's first press conference

Antonio Conte will be officially unveiled as the Chelsea manager on Thursday at 14:00 GMT at a media event at Stamford Bridge where he is expected to speak in English.

Hundreds of journalists are expected to attend the event, as the 46-year-old took charge of the club on Monday from interim boss Guus Hiddink. Conte has been learning English intensively since December last year, despite only being announced as Chelsea manager at the beginning of April.

His first official day at Stamford Bridge came on Monday, after he took a week's holiday following the elimination of his Italy side from Euro 2016 at the quarter-final stage with defeat to Germany.

Conte is expected to take his first Chelsea training session on Wednesday, with players not involved in international competition this summer having worked with the club coaches in his absence. The club will fly out to Austria on Friday before Conte takes the reins for the first time in a pre-season match against Rapid Vienna the following day.

July 20 will see Chelsea take on WAC RZ Pellets, before leaving for the United States to continue preparations for the Premier League opener against West Ham on August 15.
