Gundogan not ruling out Dortmund return

    ilkaygundogan-cropped_1p02bd4alijc91en1zirs3f8kw.jpg

Ilkay Gundogan has made a swift impact at Manchester City, but says he cannot discount the possibility of rejoining Borussia Dortmund further down the line. The Germany international, 25, completed a switch to City from Dortmund in June, agreeing terms on a four-year contract.

Following knee surgery that saw him miss Euro 2016, Gundogan had to wait until last week to make his City debut - a 4-0 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League.

A first goal followed in Saturday's 4-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth and Gundogan wants to prove himself away from Dortmund before considering any potential return to the Bundesliga.

"If it was the case in the next one or two years, I would probably not be happy about it," he told Sport Bild.

"Because it would probably mean that I have failed or not developed myself."If I'm 29 or 30, I do not know if [Dortmund would] still want me. Basically, I would not exclude the possibility, but now I have other big targets."

Fabregas: I hope I can make Conte see I deserve to play

    cesc-fabregas-efl-cup-leicester-v-chelsea-200916_3jpv1i9qm6wz1nx2pbeh45aj3.jpg

Cesc Fabregas claims he is training with the enthusiasm of his teenage self in a bid to win over Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

Fabregas fired an extra-time brace to give Chelsea a 4-2 win in Tuesday's EFL Cup third-round tie at Leicester City, but he is yet to start a Premier League match under the Italian.

Conte praised the Spain international for his work behind the scenes in improving his defensive contribution after the match, while Fabregas hopes a demonstration of his more widely celebrated attacking talents has made a compelling case ahead of Saturday's game against his former club Arsenal.

"Hopefully, I can open his eyes and make him see that I deserve to play," said the 29-year-old, who was also omitted from Julen Lopetegui's maiden Spain squad for matches against Belgium and Liechtenstein earlier this month.

"It's a new situation for me in my career after 13 years of basically playing everything for my club and national team, and it's been tough, I'm not going to deny it.

"But the last thing I will do is complain or put my hands up and give in. Something from inside is coming out stronger than ever and I just feel like a little boy in training, trying to win my spot back as I used to do at Arsenal when I was 16.

"I've been training very hard. You have to be professional. You have to keep your attitude. All my team-mates deserve respect. My coach deserves respect because I know he wants to win and if he doesn't play me there is always a reason."Fabregas appreciates his two-goal salvo might not be enough to win a starting spot at Emirates Stadium.

"It's too early," he said. "I'm not going to deny I want to play every single minute - it's what I work for - but the coach chooses the 11 he thinks is best suited to win the game.

"Wherever I am I will support the team. Inside, outside and when my time comes I will try to perform as I have been doing over the last few weeks."Arsenal is a special fixture because I've lived moments there that I've never lived in my career. It's a very special place for me and that's it.

"No matter what I hear or what they say to me, Arsenal will always be a fantastic, special club in my heart."They gave me absolutely everything and I will repeat it until I die, no matter what they will always be in my heart."

As the famously meticulous Conte continues to search for a balance between attack and defence during the opening weeks of his Chelsea reign, Fabregas explained he is not the only midfielder to have come in for special attention at their Cobham training base.

"[Conte] speaks a lot," he added. "He spoke to me a few times as well. He wants the midfielders to be very complete, to be physically strong. We are training very hard for it."If you have to analyse me, maybe I'm a bit more the playmaker, creative going forward and he wants me to be a little bit more stable and compact in defence.

"For [Nemanja] Matic, who is the opposite of me, he wants him to be better offensively. For Oscar, for [N'Golo] Kante, he works with every aspect for us to be the best we can."

Morata: Chelsea made big offer to sign me

    alvaro-morata-real-madrid-celta-la-liga_1nrne5w10dugb1motxo4g40vxa.jpg

Alvaro Morata has revealed how Chelsea attempted to bring him to the Premier League this summer and wanted to make him the most expensive Spanish player ever.

The Spain international returned to Madrid from Juventus after Zinedine Zidane's side activated the buy-back option in his Juve contract, after they had sold him to the Serie A giants two years prior.

There was some suggestion that the European champions were only re-signing Morata in order to sell him on at a profit, with Chelsea heavily linked with his signature.

And Morata confirmed that new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte - his former boss at Juve - was interested in a reunion at Stamford Bridge that he claims would have broken the transfer record for a Spanish player."Chelsea showed the most interest," he told Sport Bild. "Antonio Conte had already signed me for Juventus.

"And it was a very good offer this time. I would have been the most expensive Spanish player ever."[But] Real said that they have me in their plans, and that was always a dream of mine."

Morata has scored twice from six appearances since his return to Santiago Bernabeu.

Nice 4-0 Monaco: Balotelli pips Falcao to send hosts top of Ligue 1

    mario-balotelli-cropped_ew6yqvs7xmor1570ps2rbztd8.jpg

Mario Balotelli continued his impressive start to life in Ligue 1 as his brace in a 4-0 rout of rivals Monaco sent Nice to the top of the table.

The controversial Italy international left Liverpool for Nice on a free transfer in the last window and made it four goals in two league appearances with his brace in Wednesday's derby at the Allianz Riviera.

Paul Baysse had already headed Nice into a 17th-minute lead by the time Balotelli raced into the area and drilled a shot into the far corner. The former AC Milan striker then doubled his tally for the evening and the season in the 68th minute when he swept home first time inside the penalty area.

Balotelli missed out on the chance to make it a hat-trick as he had already been replaced when Nice were awarded a penalty for Tiemoue Bakayoko's challenge on Valentin Eysseric that earned the Monaco defender a red card.

Alassane Plea, Balotelli's replacement, saw his spot-kick saved by Danijel Subasic, but made amends moments later by nodding home Wylan Cyprien's cross to complete a comprehensive victory for Lucien Favre's men.

Monaco's unbeaten league run consequently came to an abrupt halt, while Nice hold a one-point lead at the summit over champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern Munich 3-0 Hertha Berlin: Ancelotti's men maintain perfect start

    hd-bayern-munich_12gu06i45nsqy1xps70vvfghdx.jpg

Franck Ribery continued his fine start to the season and Arjen Robben marked his return from injury with a goal as Bayern Munich cantered to a 3-0 victory over Hertha Berlin to maintain their 100 per cent start winning start to the Bundesliga season. Both sides had won their opening three league fixtures, but it was the champions that put in another sublime performance at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

The brilliant Ribery opened the scoring early in the first half after showing brilliant feet in the Hertha area before firing his second goal of the season past goalkeeper Rune Jarstein.

It continued a fine start to the campaign for the former France winger - who endured a difficult, injury-hit season under Pep Guardiola last term - and he has now had a hand in six goals this term already.

Bayern created numerous chances to score a second after Ribery's opener and Thiago Alcantara eventually doubled their lead following some poor Hertha defending, before Robben celebrated his comeback from injury with a well-taken goal.

The Netherlands international had come on halfway through the second half to replace Thomas Muller for his first appearance of 2016-17 after overcoming a groin injury.Bayern consequently stay unbeaten under head coach Carlo Ancelotti, while the Bavarians have not lost their past 20 fixtures played during the Oktoberfest festival.

The hosts were in the ascendancy from the off and Robert Lewandowski saw a point-blank header well saved by Jarstein, before Muller inexplicably aimed wide from inside the six-yard box after Ribery's fine cross.

Bayern continued to dominate and Javi Martinez saw a goal-bound header from Ribery's corner cleared off the goalline after 15 minutes.

A minute later Bayern did have the lead through a fine piece of individual skill from Ribery.

David Alaba cut the ball back for the 33-year-old and Ribery danced past two Hertha defenders before firing the ball underneath Jarstein, who could only watch the ball trickle over the line.

Lewandowski should have perhaps doubled the lead on the half-hour mark when he latched onto Arturo Vidal's sublime long ball, but the Poland marksman saw his one-on-one lob go wide.

Hertha looked toothless going forward in the opening 60 minutes, but the introduction of Valentin Stocker caused Bayern problems, with the winger immediately testing Manuel Neuer after a quick counter-attack.But Bayern were 2-0 ahead in the 68th minute thanks to a gift from Hertha.

Liverpool loanee Allan lost possession inside his own area and Thiago had no trouble beating Jarstein with a clinical finish.Hertha's misery did not end there as some more questionable defending saw Robben cap his comeback with his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute.

The away side again lost possession in a dangerous position, with Thiago laying the ball off for Robben, who cut inside from the right before curling the ball in the top corner for the 3-0.

And that was enough for Bayern, who strolled through the closing stages, to make it four from four in the league this term.

Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal: Ramos salvages draw for Zidane's men

    sergio-ramos-real-madrid-villarreal-la-liga_1eye3mjlgaiu819lrao5i09omq.jpg

Real Madrid's bid for a record 17th consecutive LaLiga victory fell short as Villarreal held them to a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale were back in Zinedine Zidane's XI for their tilt at history, but had little joy during an opening half that ended with Bruno Soriano putting the visitors ahead from the penalty spot.

Sergio Ramos was culpable for his team falling behind, but quickly atoned by heading home from James Rodriguez's 48th-minute corner.

Karim Benzema, Bale and Ronaldo all went close to inking Madrid's latest entry into the history books, but their 16-match run, which began after February's derby defeat to Atletico Madrid, puts them level with the mark set by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona during the 2010-11 season.

Zidane's men remain top of LaLiga despite losing their 100 per cent record this term and Barca and Atleti will look to close the gap when they meet at Camp Nou later on Wednesday.

Mateo Kovacic returned to the Madrid XI alongside their superstar forwards as a result of the calf injury Casemiro suffered against Espanyol, and much of the early action was concentrated in the midfield area as Villarreal kept their illustrious opponents at arm's length.

In the 19th minute, Sergio Asenjo swatted the ball to safety after Karim Benzema sought to turn in Bale's header back across goal.

Fran Escriba's side were playing with the confidence of a team on a three-match winning run and Kiko Casilla was forced to push a drive from ex-Madrid midfielder Denis Cheryshev behind before Nicola Sansone sliced an elaborate volley from the resulting corner.

Ronaldo was largely starved of service and was penalised for a foul when getting on the end of a Marcelo centre before firing an ambitious long-range effort off target in the 32nd minute.

The similarly peripheral Bale followed suit five minutes later and, after Marcelo limped off to be replaced by Dani Carvajal, a forgettable half for the hosts concluded with Ramos handling Samu Castillejo's shot just inside the area and Bruno floating a Panenka spot-kick into the net.

Ramos led from the front from the restart, seeing an effort blocked when Asenjo fumbled a corner before picking out the bottom corner from a subsequent set-piece.Benzema glanced wide afterwards as Madrid attacked their opponents with an intensity entirely lacking from their first-half work.

The French striker turned provide when Ronaldo narrowly failed to turn home a dangerous low cross and Bale steered a side-footed effort past the post in the 65th minute as Madrid continued to crank through the gears.

An exasperated Ronaldo was booked for a late challenge on Bruno before Bale made way for Lucas Vazquez inside the final 20 minutes.

Another header was guided off target by Benzema and the Frenchman made way for Alvaro Morata, but there was no way through despite Zidane utilising his full array of forward options.

Morata did come close by steering a header into the turf that brought a stunning reaction stop from Asenjo, who might have been facing a penalty had Bruno's clumsy late challenge on Ramos brought anything more than unanswered fury from the stands.

Juventus 4-0 Cagliari: Higuain finds the net as Allegri's men stroll to win

    gonzalo-higuain-juventus-cagliari-serie-a_nrvvokox1ws010vymuzg5vsm8.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain celebrated his return to the starting line-up with his fourth goal in five games as Juventus routed Cagliari 4-0 to move top of Serie A.

The Argentina striker, who signed from rivals Napoli for €90million in the transfer window, was controversially omitted from Juve's XI in the 2-1 Derby d'Italia defeat to rivals Inter at the weekend.

But Higuain made up for lost time and marked an all-action performance with the second goal at Juventus Stadium as the hosts ran out comfortable winners on Wednesday.Massimiliano Allegri handed a first start of the season to defender Daniele Rugani and the 22-year-old repaid his faith with Juve's opening goal after 14 minutes.

Higuain's effort and Dani Alves' first for the club made it 3-0 before half-time and Juventus were home and dry when Mario Lemina's effort deflected off Luca Ceppitelli in the closing stages.

The result leaves Cagliari with just three points from their opening five Serie A fixtures, while Juventus leapfrogged Napoli - who drew at Genoa - to go top.

Juve, who had failed to win their past two matches, started brightly and Miralem Pjanic brought out the best of Marco Storari with a low, bouncing free-kick that was turned around the post.

Paulo Dybala, still without a goal this season, put Higuain through on goal moments later and Storari made a good reflex save.

Juve's early dominance was rewarded in the 14th minute when Rugani fired into an unguarded goal after Higuain's superb volley from Pjanic's chipped free-kick was only parried by Storari.

Giorgio Chiellini made an important block to prevent Davide Di Gennaro from levelling, but Higuain soon had a deserved goal with a thumping rebound-header from Pjanic's shot.

And Dani Alves essentially ended the game as a contest shortly before half-time with a low drive from the edge of the area.

Allegri used the second half to rest veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, with Brazilian understudy Neto making his first appearance of the season, and Dani Alves almost doubled his Juventus goal tally when he hit a fierce shot from outside the box that flew narrowly over the crossbar just before the hour mark.

With three consecutive away games on the horizon, Juventus eased their foot off the gas in the second half but there was a sense that the Bianconeri were keen for Dybala to get on the scoresheet.Dybala netted 23 goals in all competitions last term, but he was restricted to a blocked shot before being substituted after 72 minutes.

Pjanic went close to making it 4-0 with a free-kick that Storari saved well at his near post shortly before Hernanes - making his first start of the season - hit a shot that was dipping under the bar from 25 yards, but the former Juve keeper made a superb one-handed save.

But, with eight minutes left on the clock, Lemina pounced on a knockdown from substitute Mario Mandzukic and his shot nestled in the goal after hitting Ceppitelli and leaving Storari little chance to make the save.

Northampton 1-3 Man Utd: Mourinho's men avoid Sixfields shock

    hd-jose-mourinho-man-utd_8eqt9cxd8ek813536alia83q7.jpg

Manchester United ended a three-game losing run with a 3-1 triumph over Northampton Town in a third-round EFL Cup tie played out in front of a record crowd of 7,798 at Sixfields.

Having warmed up in a hotel car park before the tie, Jose Mourinho's side needed second-half goals from Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford to book their place in the last 16.

Michael Carrick's first-time finish from the edge of the area in the 17th minute had put United ahead, but some shoddy defending allowed Northampton to equalise at the end of the first half.

An unwillingness to deal with the danger led to Daley Blind felling Sam Hoskins inside the area, with Alex Revell converting the resulting penalty to raise hopes of a cup shock.

However, Herrera put the four-time winners of the competition back in front with a low drive before substitute Rashford capitalised on an air shot from goalkeeper Adam Smith to tap home a third.

Mourinho unsurprisingly opted to rotate his squad for the trip to the League One side, although Wayne Rooney remained in the starting XI.

Playing as the main forward in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was named on a strong visiting bench, the England captain saw a potential goal rightly chalked off for offside.

He did at least have a hand in breaking the deadlock as his free-kick from inside the area hit the wall and broke perfectly for Carrick to pass the ball beyond Smith's desperate dive.

Yet for all their dominance, United looked decidedly shaky at the back.Kenji Gorre turned easily away from two defenders to clip the crossbar with a left-footed effort just before Blind's obvious trip felled Hoskins inside the area.

Revell punished the Dutchman's mistake, sending goalkeeper Sergio Romero the wrong way to bring Northampton level just before the interval.

Mourinho did not wait long to summon Rashford and Ibrahimovic from the bench in the second half - and both players were involved in the build-up to the crucial third goal of the contest.

Rashford rolled the pass back to the supporting Herrera and, having hit the post just before with a left-footed drive, the Spaniard found the back of the net with a rocket off his right boot.

Any possibility of a second Northampton comeback were dismissed with 15 minutes to play as Rashford was rewarded for chasing a hopeful punt with a simple finish into an empty net to make it six in six for club and country.

Swansea 1-2 Manchester City: Second string visitors ease to victory

    swansea-man-city-21092016_113hjlcq1s28l15dschv4fnu60.jpg

Second-half goals from Gael Clichy and Aleix Garcia were enough for Manchester City to open their EFL Cup campaign with a 2-1 win at Swansea City on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's men were setting out to defend their title but had to settle for a 0-0 scoreline going into the break.

The visitors came out in the second half with the same intent and eventually broke the deadlock through Clichy, who stood unmarked on the edge of the area to lash home with the help of a deflection.Garcia then doubled City's lead and made the result safe when he turned in Jesus Navas' cross, rendering Gylfi Sigurdsson's 93rd minute strike a mere consolation.

In the first of two meetings between the sides in the space of three days, it was the visitors who began on the front foot, youngster Angelino drilling wide after connecting with Pablo Zabaleta's cross.

Swansea – winners in 2013 – went close 14 minutes in, record signing Borja pouncing on Caballero's stray pass, but City's goalkeeper atoned for his error with an instinctive save from the Spaniard's venomous strike.

Francesco Guidolin's side continued to press, with only a fine interception from Kompany denying Borja what would have been a simple tap-in from Neil Taylor's cross.City responded well though, Kristoffer Nordfeldt doing brilliantly to prevent Mike van der Hoorn turning Garcia's delivery into his own goal.

Leroy Sane was the next to test Swansea's resolve but, having latched onto Fernando's clever flick-on, the Germany youngster could only direct a tame half-volley into the grasp of Nordfeldt.

Swansea started brightly following the restart – Borja trying his luck with an acrobatic effort – but it was City who had the lead when they carved open the hosts' defence with a superb counter.

Angelino was the architect, combining sharply with Kelechi Iheanacho before driving forward at pace and picking out Clichy on the cusp of Swansea's area – the full-back's deflected strike evading the grasp of Nordfeldt and nestling into the bottom-left corner.

Guidolin introduced Sigurdsson on the hour, and the Iceland playmaker was almost gifted a goal when John Stones took a heavy touch in City's area, but the former Tottenham man could not make the most of the opportunity.

However, just as Swansea looked to build some momentum, City turned on the style once more, Jesus Navas picking out his compatriot Garcia, who duly prodded in his maiden City goal.

After a period of late pressure, Swansea netted a deserved consolation goal in stoppage time – Sigurdsson nudging home from close range. City, though, will be troubled by the sight of Kompany heading down the tunnel before the final whistle as the visitors held firm to seal progression.

Empoli 0-2 Inter: Icardi double sinks Martusciello's men

    hd-mauro-icardi-inter_q5u8tsdkjffl190rry05k9uqv.jpg

Mauro Icardi's scoring streak continued as Inter beat Empoli 2-0 at the Stadio Carlo Castellani for a third Serie A win in a row.

The Argentine had netted in 2-1 successes over both Pescara and champions Juventus and also made a flying start in Florence, bringing his career tally against Empoli to six with a first-half double.

Inter had not previously managed three victories on the bounce in this calendar year, but had secured this result by half-time as the hosts never looked likely to respond. While the second period did not quite have the same spark as the Icardi-inspired first, Frank de Boer's men confidently saw out the win.

And following a slow start to his tenure at San Siro, De Boer's side appear to be on the up, with this a dominant, ruthless performance. With Inter unbeaten against their home side in over 10 years, it was little surprise that they immediately took control and then the lead.

A first opening did not arrive until the 10th minute, but when it did - Antonio Candreva working a yard to centre from the right - Icardi was on hand to clinically stoop a header into the net for his fifth of the season.

It was 2-0 and a second for Icardi seven minutes later.

Sent through by Joao Mario, Icardi had the pace to steer clear of the Empoli defence and the cool head to slot a low finish beyond Lukasz Skorupski.

Two ahead inside 17 minutes, Inter were now in an unprecedented position this season, having conceded first in all five of their previous competitive games under De Boer, but they remained on the front foot as Icardi overran the ball to squander a chance for his hat-trick.

And the visitors, with their brutal intensity, turned up the heat further.
Skorupski was required to gather Danilo D'Ambrosio's effort at the second attempt after Candreva's lay-off had prompted a shot.

Finally, as half-time approached, Empoli offered a threat, with Inter loanee Federico Dimarco's drive from Riccardo Saponara's incisive pass turned around the post by Samir Handanovic.

The Slovenian goalkeeper was soon tested again by the same man, this time diving high to his left to parry, before De Boer's men rediscovered their swashbuckling style in the closing stages of the half.

Manuel Pucciarelli could not make a clean connection from Jeison Murillo's wayward header shortly after the restart, but the next chance came at the other end as Icardi teed up Candreva to thump straight at Skorupski.

Empoli captain Massimo Maccarone blazed over in a rare second-half opening, while substitute Eder was similarly wasteful from Ivan Perisic's cross for Inter.Instead, with the scoreline remaining unchanged, De Boer's attentions could turn to a home clash against Bologna on Sunday.

Tottenham 5-0 Gillingham: Spurs run rampant in EFL Cup opener

    tottenham_13n8d4zssnti91px1pnu8542x0.jpg

Christian Eriksen scored twice and Vincent Janssen opened his Tottenham account in a 5-0 thrashing of Gillingham in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday. Mauricio Pochettino's men were a goal up at half-time through Eriksen and ran away with the match after the break at White Hart Lane.

The attacking midfielder struck again in the second half before goals from Janssen, Josh Onomah and Erik Lamela - who also had three assists - put the icing on the cake.

Tottenham were runners-up in the competition in 2015 and their reward for progressing is a tough trip to play Liverpool at Anfield in the fourth round.

Spurs - unbeaten in the Premier League - were kept out until Denmark international Eriksen struck in the 31st minute, collecting Lamela's pass and smashing a magnificent strike past substitute goalkeeper Stuart Nelson from 25 yards.

Eriksen scored again three minutes after half-time, slotting in after Lamela's run had created the opportunity.Janssen then struck his first Tottenham goal from the penalty spot on 54 minutes after Kieran Trippier had been brought down by Adedeji Oshilaja in the area.

The impressive Lamela picked up his third assist of the night by setting up Onomah for his first professional goal with a precise throughball.Lamela then got a deserved goal of his own, driving hard into the bottom corner after Janssen had shown good strength to create the goal.

League One Gillingham came into the game on a four-match winless run and were unable to produce a shot on target as Spurs displayed too much class.

Barcelona lost Lionel Messi to injury as they were held to a 1-1 La Liga draw by Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

The champions knew that a win would take them to within a point of leaders Real Madrid after their draw with Villarreal, but Ivan Rakitic's first-half header was cancelled out by Angel Correa in the second period.

Perhaps more damaging for Barca was the loss of Messi to a possible recurrence of an existing groin problem, while Sergio Busquets was also withdrawn before the hour mark.

Luis Enrique's side, unbeaten in 12 league games against Atletico, had controlled much of the proceedings in the first half but found it difficult to muster clear-cut chances, before Rakitic headed in Andres Iniesta's cross from a short corner.

Atleti made a strong start to the second period and snatched the equaliser when substitutes Fernando Torres and Correa combined within a minute of coming on, just after Messi had failed to shake off discomfort sustained after a tangling with Diego Godin.

Barca won three of their four meetings with Atleti last season 2-1 and they pushed hard for a late winner, but Diego Simeone's side kept them at bay with relative ease in the closing stages to stay just a point behind in the table, and four adrift of Madrid.

Barca's early possession yielded few clear opportunities, Messi curling into Oblak's arms from 20 yards out with his first real sight of goal, and it was Atleti who conjured the better openings in the first half-hour.

Yannick Carrasco had Ter Stegen at full stretch with a curling drive from the left of the penalty area, before Filipe Luis blasted over the crossbar from 20 yards after Barca failed to clear their lines.

Neymar bent an effort narrowly wide of Oblak's left-hand post, but just as Barca's frustrations began to grow, they seized the advantage with four minutes left of the half.

Iniesta collected the ball to the left of the penalty area, and his pinpoint cross towards the far post was glanced into the bottom corner off the head of the arriving Rakitic.

Atleti came out flying after the break, with Antoine Griezmann testing Ter Stegen from close range before a timely intervention from Gerard Pique denied Kevin Gameiro a chance in the six-yard box.

Busquets was withdrawn for Andre Gomes just six minutes into the half, and it got worse for Barca when Messi was forced off just shy of the hour mark after failing to shake off what appeared to be a recurrence of a groin problem sustained early this month.

A terrible two minutes for Barca was compounded when Atletico snatched their equaliser. Torres fed fellow substitute Correa 30 yards from goal, and when Javier Mascherano lost his footing, the young striker raced clear into the area before slotting the ball beyond Ter Stegen and in off the keeper's right-hand post.

The home crowd were deflated but Barca pushed on for a winner, with Neymar twice denied by good blocks from Oblak and Pique heading narrowly wide, but Atletico held firm to move back into fourth, behind Barca and early pace-setters Madrid and Sevilla.
