Real Madrid confirm Marcelo calf strain

    marcelo-cropped_o54oig7upuzw1r66xtpr3vbzs.jpg

Real Madrid have confirmed that full-back Marcelo has suffered a calf muscle strain. The Brazil international, who had played every minute of Madrid's opening six games this season, was forced off in the first half of Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

And the club have now moved to say he will be sidelined for treatment, though no official date for a return has been set.

"Following tests carried out today on Marcelo at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade two muscle strain in the soleus muscle of his right calf," a Madrid statement read."His recovery will continue to be monitored."Initial reports in Spain have suggested that Marcelo will be sidelined for between two and three weeks.

He will miss Saturday's trip to Las Palmas and is expected to be unavailable for the Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund next week, or the league match at home to Eibar on October 2.

Kompany set for more tests on injured groin

    vincent-kompany-manchester-city_1pudnko9232r41ll3oac0zn6mr.jpg

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will undergo further tests this weekend after being diagnosed with muscle fatigue in his groin.

Kompany left the pitch in stoppage time of City's 2-1 victory against Swansea City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, in what was his first appearance since picking up a thigh problem back in May.

The Belgian missed much of last season with calf problems and it was feared that he had suffered a recurrence at the Liberty Stadium. But it is believed his latest problem concerns his groin, although the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

He will be assessed in the coming days as the club try to ascertain how long he will spend on the sidelines.Kompany missed 36 games in all competitions through injury last season after suffering a number of breakdowns.

He limped off the pitch just nine minutes into one comeback against Sunderland on Boxing Day last year, and then after three months on the sidelines he lasted just seven minutes into his next return against Dynamo Kiev in March. He then sustained the thigh injury which kept him out until this week just 10 minutes into the Champions League semi-final second leg at Real Madrid in May.

Kompany only returned to the City squad last weekend for the Premier League clash with Bournemouth and played 90 minutes against Swansea before being forced off the pitch after stretching to try to prevent Gylfi Sigurdsson's late goal.

Not a waste of money - Man Utd MUST play Paul Pogba in the right position

    paul-pogba-manchester-united-1332_k7rblh8w6m2u1j8xacu9ln0ty.jpg

Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United is already an unmitigated disaster. Or at least that is the impression you might have got from reading some reviews of the Frenchman’s performances in the losses to Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford which have set Jose Mourinho’s side back over the past couple of weeks.

Alongside the plight of Wayne Rooney, the role of Pogba has been perhaps the biggest talking point to come from the ugly run which was momentarily brought to a halt by Wednesday’s EFL Cup win at Northampton ahead of Saturday's clash with Premier League champions Leicester City. But to single out Pogba is to unfairly highlight an issue which is not of the Frenchman’s making at a time when United have far more deep-rooted problems to alleviate.

It was always going to be a tough task to placate all of the critics from day one after United forked out a world record £89.5 million to bring their former youth star back to Old Trafford. Many decided immediately that Pogba was a waste of money, and the first sign of anything other than magnificence was always going to instigate claims that such quickly-drawn conclusions were accurate.

And, while Pogba has undoubtedly been short of the mark required in his last three outings, some refuse to take into account the extenuating circumstances for his early struggles as part of Mourinho’s new dawn.

For a start, this is a very new United side. While Mourinho has been brought in for his ability to make an immediate impact at the top of the game, there is no escaping the fact that last season’s Manchester United were a far cry from a competitive outfit. The Portuguese has been far from infallible during their recent dip, but to categorise their run as a crisis is somewhat far-fetched as Mourinho looks to rebuild a winning model.

One of the areas the manager has yet to address adequately is the best environment for Pogba, although he has certainly tried. Against Manchester City, as in his opening two starts for United, the 23-year-old started alongside Marouane Fellaini in a dual pivot at the base of midfield, but when that didn’t stem the flow of City possession Mourinho decided to try out Pogba as a number 10 against Feyenoord.

The 1-0 defeat in Rotterdam featured a flickering but ultimately underwhelming performance from Pogba, and the 3-1 reverse at Watford which followed saw him tried out in a third role in the space of a week – to the left of a midfield trident with Fellaini at the base. The misuse of the Belgian as a hunter and gatherer had a far greater bearing on Pogba’s game than anything the Frenchman himself did and the calls for Michael Carrick to come in grew long and loud as a result.

And therein lies the greater issue. Pogba can only control so much himself and, while Mourinho has conceded that the unparalleled price tag has weighed on his star man’s mind to some degree, the inability to provide the correct environment for such a key player is perhaps the manager’s biggest failure to this point. Just as at Juventus, Pogba particularly thrived alongside Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal as one dictated the pace and tempo of the game and the other took on the majority of the workload off the ball, United need to make their game work for Pogba for him to succeed.

But why can’t an £89.5m player be more adaptable, some might ask? Pogba clearly is adaptable, but if you are looking to him to dominate a game as he can and drive United to victories, then putting him in the best position to succeed has to be the primary concern. In the same way that Zlatan Ibrahimovic was slotted straight in as a number nine and wide players were encouraged to get more crosses in to supply him, Pogba must also be given the right environment to achieve something in the red shirt.

Expectation will always be there. Not only because of his status as a world-record signing but also due to the fact he is the cocky, brass type of player many onlookers love to shoot down. But, with just a little tweaking elsewhere in the midfield, Pogba can be the player he was in Italy and United can get on with addressing the more pressing concerns that are their defensive line and their misfiring captain.

In the meantime, there will be many who make it their mission to decry the money spent on Pogba and continue to blast the player himself for his failure to live up to his billing. But in truth the onlookers’ expectations need to be reconfigured far more radically than Pogba’s approach to the game.

Deco: Mourinho will get it right at Manchester United

    hd-jose-mourinho-man-utd_8eqt9cxd8ek813536alia83q7.jpg

Deco has backed his former manager Jose Mourinho to succeed at Manchester United, despite a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

The Special One came flying out of the blocks with his new club, but two straight Premier League defeats have raised some doubts, as United now sit six points behind league leaders Manchester City. However, Deco, who played under Mourinho at Porto, believes he will prevail. "Mourinho will get it right - he always does," he told Goal.

"He has the attention to detail, there will still be details that he needs to get right at Manchester United, but he will get the club to where he demands them to be.

"You have to remember this is a team who finished outside the top four last season but, because Mourinho is there, people expect them to suddenly be competing for the league."The former Portugal international added that Mourinho needed time to make United click, as did recruits like Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.

"Football doesn't always work like that, new coaches need time, and new players need time to settle," he said. "The most important thing this season is that Manchester United finish in the top four and are back in the Champions Leauge.

"Mourinho has always taken the domestic cup competitions seriously whatever league he has been in - and I think he will really try and win one this season. This season was always going to be a season of transition and a top-four finish and a domestic cup would have to be considered a success."

Robben must settle for bench role, says Ancelotti

    arjen-robben-cropped_1ooetsc71kw2m1qbq0c3bn00ml.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti says Arjen Robben must settle for a substitute's role at Bayern Munich as he continues his recovery from injury.

The Netherlands international scored a brilliant third goal in Wednesday's 3-0 Bundesliga win over Hertha Berlin, a full 200 days on from his last competitive appearance.

Robben stated after the match that he was keen to be "sensible" with his involvement in the first team, in order to avoid a recurrence of the groin injury that had kept him sidelined since March.

And although Ancelotti plans to rotate his side for Saturday's trip to Hamburg, he does not plan to include Robben in the starting line-up."I spoke to Robben, he'll be on the bench for the time being," the Italian told reporters.

"He'll play in the second half. [Manuel] Neuer, [Mats] Hummels and [Robert] Lewandowski will play against Hamburg."I will rotate things tomorrow – I'll decide on the line-up after training. Rotations are important, from a physical and mental perspective."

Bayern have started the campaign in style under Ancelotti, winning all seven matches, scoring 26 goals and conceding just once.Hamburg, by contrast, have endured a dismal season so far, having claimed just one victory – a 1-0 win away to third-tier Zwickau in the DFB-Pokal in August.

Bruno Labbadia's side have now won a league match against the reigning champions since September 2009, but Ancelotti is nonetheless wary of the danger they pose on the counter-attack."Hamburg will try to defend well and hurt us on the counter tomorrow. We need to be prepared for that," he said.

"I'm sure it will be a difficult one for us. We want to start as we did against Hertha."

:(Injured Martial to miss Leicester clash

    anthonymartial-cropped_92ttv4ua0441v16n2xxqp4eb.jpg

Anthony Martial will miss Manchester United's Premier League match against champions Leicester City, manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

The France international had to be replaced after 38 minutes of United's 3-1 Premier League defeat to Watford last weekend and missed the 3-1 EFL Cup win over Northampton Town on Wednesday.

Martial, who returned to training on Friday, will not be fit in time to take on Leicester on Saturday, with Mourinho stressing it is a calf injury – not a concussion – which has kept him out.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Mourinho said: "Martial is not available. You are wrong because you say [because of] concussion – one thing is concussion, another thing is contusion."It is because of a contusion in the calf and ankle area.

"You know when that happened – I think you know," he added, referring to an apparent foul on the forward by Miguel Britos, whose tackle went unpunished, ahead of Watford's first goal at Vicarage Road.Martial has played in all five of United's Premier League matches so far this season, without scoring.

Mourinho did not rule out Luke Shaw (groin) or Henrikh Mkhitaryan (thigh) for the Leicester game when asked about expected absentees through injury.

Barcelona want the best for Messi - Luis Enrique

    luisenrique-cropped_1to7yb7ffwf0jzzslas7cilic.jpg

Luis Enrique defended Barcelona's treatment of players after Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza appeared to question their handling of Lionel Messi's injury.

Messi sustained his latest groin problem during Barca's 1-1 La Liga draw against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and Bauza suggested the three-week time frame predicted for his recovery is too short.

He subsequently retracted any perceived criticism of the La Liga champions in an interview with Sport and Luis Enrique is keen to move on from the controversy.

"The only truth in this story, because there are a lot of different opinions floating around, is we all seek the best for Messi and all the other players in the club," he told a news conference ahead of Saturday's trip to face his hometown club Sporting Gijon."That's the objective we are all looking for. It's always bad news when a player gets injured, dreadful news.

"The best player in the world getting injured is bad news for us and anyone who enjoys watching good football.""But I would rather not get involved in the merry-go-round of rumours that would only aggravate the situation further."

Luis Enrique hopes his players can repeat the strong performances they produced last season when a period of absence for Messi did not derail their march to the title.

"Last year Messi was out for two-and-a-half months and the team responded fantastically," he said."We have a great squad in depth.

"Of course we are stronger with Messi, he is the best player in the world. But we have more than enough resources to beat any team, that's the reality of the situation.

"We want him to get fit as soon as possible, as with any player who gets injured, but if we want to win titles we need to deal with moments when players are injured."

Messi's fellow striker Luis Suarez found himself under scrutiny after Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis shared a picture on Instagram of a bloodied foot sustained in a tackle with the Uruguay star during the midweek match.Luis Enrique felt the row had been blow out of proportion and insisted there was no ill will on Suarez's part.

"That's something I only learnt about an hour ago," he said. "With such interest in these stories, my only conclusion is that Luis Suarez had no intention of offending anybody.

"But things so often get interpreted the wrong way in this modern world that we live in. I am quite sure Luis Suarez had no intention of offending anybody."

    Neymar case reopened in Spain

    neymar-barcelona-atletico-madrid-la-liga_ri4kb8f8pv3y1lac7sfjgpafe.jpg

The Spanish High Court has ordered a judge to reopen the investigation into the transfer of Barcelona forward Neymar from Santos in 2013.

The case was thrown out in July by judge Jose de la Mata due to a lack of evidence, but a group of magistrates led by Angela Murillo claim to have found evidence of fraud and corruption and have therefore decided to reopen the investigation.

Two contracts from November and December 2011 were re-examined and it is claimed that the €40 million payment made by Barca to the player to guarantee his signing infringes the "free transfer market" for footballers. That payment meant Neymar and his father would have to pay €10m to Barca if the deal did not go ahead, something described in the latest document as "conscious similation" and "a scam" by the High Court in Spain.

As well as Neymar and his father, former Barca president Sandro Rosell, who resigned over the controversial transfer in 2014, is also under investigation, along with the Brazilian forward's former club Santos.

Barcelona paid a fee of €17.1m to Santos for Neymar plus the €40m payment made prior to his transfer, which was later considered to be part of his wages.Nevetherless, current club chief Josep Maria Bartomeu announced when he took over from Rosell that the total package had cost the Catalan club in excess of €86m.

Unpaid taxes mean that figure has since risen to around €100m, but the low transfer fee is also being investigated because supermarket chain DIS (who were entitled to 40 per cent of the overall transfer) believe that Barca and Santos deliberately cut them out of the deal by making separate payments and thereby ensuring a low payout.

The investigation will therefore continue for Neymar, who is now in his fourth season at Barca. The 24-year-old signed a new contract in June and is tied to the Spanish champions until 2021.Barcelona, meanwhile, responded to the news with a statement expressing the club's "displeasure" at the move.

"After the magistrates' decision to uphold the prosecutor's recommendations and continue the proceedings against Neymar, Neymar Jr, Santos and Barcelona in the DIS case, FC Barcelona express their displeasure at the reasonings behind the resolution," the missive reads.

"The presiding judge, who first had agreed to acquit all those investigated, must now reopen the case and end up with a trial. In this trial Barcelona will maintain the same argument they have always defended and show the innocence of all those investigated."

Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Freiburg: Aubameyang on target as hosts keep winning

    caglar-soyuncu-sc-freiburg-aubameyang-borussia-dortmund-bundesliga-23092016_14o58j2khuswm11mgk8hqsw02a.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang marked his 100th Bundesliga appearance with a customary goal as Borussia Dortmund beat Freiburg 3-1 to continue their winning run.

Thomas Tuchel's side dismantled Legia Warsaw, Darmstadt and Wolfsburg after losing to Bundesliga new boys RB Leipzig, and their red-hot attack was once again in the groove.

Though lacking the clinical edge to continue their gluttonous goalscoring in those wins, when 17 goals were scored, Dortmund's fourth win of the Bundesliga season rarely looked in doubt.

Aubameyang opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time after a first period of home dominance, with Lukasz Piszczek extending the advantage after the break.

Maximilian Philipp quickly struck back for the visitors, but Raphael Guerreiro finished confidently to make it 3-1 late on as Freiburg slipped to an 11th straight defeat to Dortmund.

There was another milestone for Tuchel's men, who equalled a club record 24-game unbeaten run at home in the Bundesliga. Hertha Berlin will be the opposition as they look to set a new benchmark next month.Dortmund were fast out of the blocks, but the Freiburg goal lived a charmed life as the hosts cranked through the gears.

Aubameyang aimed a chip just wide after Matthias Ginter split the Freiburg defence, while Ousmane Dembele and Emre Mor were electric from the flanks, the latter seeing a deflected shot hit the crossbar.

Piszczek and Ginter saw efforts deflected agonisingly wide as the siege grew in intensity, but Nils Petersen almost snatched a shock lead for Freiburg after Mor coughed up possession in his own half.

Dembele was walking a tightrope after sarcastically applauding referee Christian Dingert following a harsh booking, but the French wonderkid went back to his box of tricks to leave his man standing on the left flank and square for Aubameyang to open the scoring with half-time approaching.

Things looked ominous for Freiburg when Piszczek coolly drove home from Gonzalo Castro's deflected cross, but Philipp put the brakes on, racing clear and finishing well after Ginter failed to cut out Janik Haberer's throughball.

Mario Gotze struggled to leave a mark on the game as he played for Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion for the first time in 1,248 days and was replaced by Guerreiro with 20 minutes to play as Tuchel cast an eye on Tuesday's Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Aubameyang spurned two more chances to restore the two-goal cushion, clipping the post on the rebound after Freiburg substitute Georg Niedermeier brought a stunning save out of his own goalkeeper and then blazing wide after bamboozling the same defender.

Guerreiro settled any lingering home nerves in stoppage time when Castro and Aubameyang combined to release the Portugal international and he found the top-right corner, prompting boisterous celebrations that are sure to be ramped up against the European champions.

Toulouse 2-0 Paris Saint-Germain: Champions continue to struggle as hosts stroll to win

    yann-bodiger-tfc-psg-ligue-1-23092016_78rfdxyd9vzx1wzeemtaznv54.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain's shaky start under Unai Emery continued as they were reduced to 10 men in a 2-0 Ligue 1 defeat to in-form Toulouse on Friday.

Serge Aurier was sent off just after the break for PSG, the right-back capping off a poor display against his former club as he received his marching orders for a needless foul on Ola Toivonen.

Yann Bodiger duly put Pascal Dupraz's side ahead from the resulting penalty, though Toulouse had their young goalkeeper Alban Lafont to thank after he pulled off a string of excellent stops to deny Edinson Cavani in the first half.

PSG, who would have gone top of Ligue 1 with a victory, pressed hard for a leveller, but Toulouse made their numerical advantage count, Jimmy Durmaz – on as a substitute – pouncing onto Thiago Motta's mistake and calmly slotting home. The victory sees Toulouse leapfrog the champions into second place, with PSG having now lost two of their opening seven Ligue 1 fixtures under Emery - matching their entire tally of defeats from last term.

After a slow start, PSG tested their hosts 10 minutes in, Lafont reacting instinctively to prevent Cavani – fresh from netting six goals in his last three games - capitalising on Issa Diop's error.PSG-loanee Odsonne Edouard had the chance to punish his parent club soon after, but the 18-year-old could only head wide after connecting with Bodiger's corner.

At the other end, Aurier, in for the injured Thomas Meunier, was fortunate to escape with just a booking when he appeared to swing an arm at Lafont in an aerial challenge with the Toulouse goalkeeper.

Lafont came to Toulouse's rescue again just before the half-hour mark, the 17-year-old pulling-off an incredible stop to deny Cavani from point-blank range.

Emery's side twice went close as the interval approached – Cavani forcing Lafont into another fine save with a powerful header before Christopher Jullien cleared Blaise Matudi's effort off the line.

Aurier's luck ran out after the restart, however, the Ivorian picking up his second booking for a blatant foul on Toivonen on the edge of the six-yard box.Bodiger stepped up and made no mistake as he lofted a composed finish into the right-hand corner from the spot, sending Alphonse Areola the wrong way.

Emery introduced Javier Pastore in the hope of adding some guile in the final third, but it was Toulouse who continued to have the better chances, Durmaz flashing a strike just wide.

Thiago Motta came on with 20 minutes remaining, and the Italy midfielder was extremely lucky not to be sent off five minutes later – recklessly shoving Issiaga Sylla just moments after picking up a yellow card.

And matters soon turned from bad to worse for PSG, Motta conceding possession deep in the visitors' half, with Durmaz calmly drilling in Toulouse's second to ensure their first win over the Parisians since 2009.

Conte tells Arsenal fans: It's a mistake to not value Wenger

    arsene-wenger-arsenal-premier-league-2016_16kdsfkgtf4wj1wjhcyj0aulf8.jpg

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has warned Arsenal fans that it's a "big mistake" to not appreciate the work of their manager Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman and the job he is doing at the Emirates Stadium has often divided Gunners fans, with many having actively protested against the 66-year-old and his running of the club.

But Wenger has an ally in Conte, whose Chelsea side face Arsenal in Saturday's London derby, believing that he should be praised for what he's done in his 20 years there.

The former Juventus and Italy national team boss told reporters: "I think Wenger is doing a good job. But it is normal that when you fight for the title every year, the fans want you to win it [at least once].

"But I would say that every year to stay up there [in the top four] it is not easy. I think Wenger is doing a good job with young players and when you see Arsenal, you can see good football.

"You must look to your manager who works every day, I think you must value him for his job, for his work. If you judge a manager only on whether he wins or loses, you make a big mistake.

"He has a great reputation and I played against him, but I was a footballer [not a manager] and it was fantastic. I remember the game in Turin against Arsenal - we won 1-0 and got to the next stage of the Champions League."

Conte also discussed Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and believes that his transition to the Premier League was made easier by the fact he has a number of Spanish players in his squad.

He added: "I think that Manchester City are playing similar football to what they played in the past. You have to see what type of tactical situation you find [yourself facing when you arrive in the job].

"That [quickly adapting to the Premier League] is because the directors of football [Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano] are Spanish and they bought a lot of players who are used to this idea of football and these tactics. I think it is a bit easier for his players to get his ideas."

Conte: I want to be Chelsea's Arsene Wenger

    antonio-conte-chelsea-premier-league-2016_1dpitzc3ohwy81n0995ls90r24.jpg

Antonio Conte has praised Arsene Wenger's 20 years in charge of Arsenal and insisted that he would like to emulate his longevity at Chelsea.

The Italian comes up against Wenger in Saturday's Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners currently level on points with their London rivals.

And when asked whether he could see himself at Chelsea for as long as his Arsenal counterpart, Conte said: "Yes, I would like this because I think when you do this then you can organise your work.

"Then there is a great satisfaction from both sides [the club and the manager]. I think there are all the possibilities [if you stay longer at one club] to achieve good work.

"And no, [I haven't thought about managing another club], my dream is to continue at Chelsea, to do my job, to continue to get to know all the players, the fans and this atmosphere because it is fantastic. I am happy. I think this is my real dream."

Chelsea have appointed 12 different managers during the Roman Abramovich era but Conte insists he is not fearing the sack despite the trigger-happy nature of the club's Russian owner.

He added: "When you trust your work, you are never afraid [of being sacked]. I am doing my work and I will continue to do my work in the same way that I did in the past.

"I am sure that if I don’t win tomorrow, and if I don’t win the next game after that, in the future I will win. If I was a director and I didn't see good work [being done behind the scenes] but that the team was still winning, I'm not sure that's good for the future."I think the club in general must view the work in this way and then I think they will see good work [from me].

"I discussed my job with the club before I arrived and I think at every club, before you sign or they hire a new manager, it is important to speak about what work the manager did in the past."

Rashford: I want to be the ultimate centre forward

    rashford-vs-watford_fra3yk28ezcp1aa0jw4fvhq7d.jpg

Marcus Rashford wants to become the "ultimate centre forward" with Manchester United and has revealed how Jose Mourinho has been working on his wide play.

The 18-year-old, who shot to prominence with his displays in the second half of last season, has ben used sparingly at the start of the 2016-17 campaign and made just one Premier League start.

But having scored in his last two games, Rashford is widely expected to again be picked for the meeting with champions Leicester City and he insists he is focused on scoring goals for United.

He told Sky Sports: "As a team, we have a good squad and we can compete for the titles this season. On a personal level, scoring a lot of goals is the main objective.

"There's some games where your touch might be off but that doesn't mean that you can't score goals and win the game for your team."I want to become the ultimate centre forward. I want to be able to play on the left, on the right and down the middle.

"To do that I need to improve my game down the sides because my positioning in those areas, where I haven't played since I was 12 or 13, is a bit off."The manager has been doing some work with me off the left and right so I think he's trying to improve me in those areas.

"I'm just trying to play with freedom like I did last year and the manager supports me with that. Like he did in the Hull [City] game, the manager just tells me to go and help the team win the game."I was here, there and everywhere during that game trying to find gaps and help the team win the game."

Emery deflects blame from PSG players after Toulouse defeat

    emery-cropped_1fjep8kusrk6y15cad59j807ni.jpg

Unai Emery believes that the performance of referee Frank Schneider was not up to par during Paris Saint-Germain's 2-0 defeat to Toulouse.

Ligue 1 champions PSG continued their shaky start to life under the former Sevilla manager with a tame display at Stadium Municipal - Serge Aurier seeing red before a penalty from Yann Bodiger and Jimmy Durmaz's late strike won it for Toulouse.

The loss is a second of the league campaign for Emery's side, matching the number of defeats they suffered under Laurent Blanc last term, but the Spaniard was quick to deflect the blame from his players, though he acknowledged a need for better discipline from the team.

"Today, the referee has not been good to us," Emery told beIN SPORTS. "The action of expulsion, the penalty is the action that changes the game. "After, with one player less on our side, the team needed patience and tranquility in the minutes that followed to score a goal.

Wenger regrets missing out on Diego Costa

    diegocosta-cropped_4g1xfntg69xk1ov2kimjizv94.jpg

Arsene Wenger regrets missing out on the signing of Diego Costa as he looks to quell the Chelsea's striker's rich vein of form against Arsenal on Saturday.

Costa has two goals in three games against the Gunners, all resulting in Chelsea wins. The Spain international notoriously wound Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista up to the point in last season's meeting at Stamford Bridge that the Brazil international was sent off for lashing out at the former Atletico Madrid man.

Costa fired Chelsea to the title with 20 goals in his maiden Premier League season and has five goals in as many games this time around under Antonio Conte.

Arsenal fans often complain at Wenger's inability to attract a star striker to the Emirates Stadium and the Frenchman admits his club failed to realise a deal for Costa could have been in the offing when he left the Calderon for London two years ago."I never thought he would leave Atletico Madrid at the time, I was surprised," Wenger said.

"Would I have made a harder play for him had I known? Yes. I like him, as a quality striker."

Costa's altercation with Gabriel ultimately earned the striker a three-match ban retrospectively and the spiky Spaniard is often involved in spats with opposition players. He was the match-winner at the Emirates last year, drawing a foul that led to Per Mertesacker's dismissal before scoring the only goal of the game. And Wenger hinted at an admiration for the striker's hardened edge ahead of this season's rematch.

"You want full commitment from every single player," he. "But commitment is different from these kind of over-reactions. He is a fighter and you respect that.

The rest is down to the referees to get the game and the rules respected."He is similar to [Didier] Drogba because he's a top-quality player. "I cannot put it on Costa the fact that we got caught last year [at the Emirates]. It was more the tandem – [Cesc] Fabregas, Costa – which was very dangerous for us.

"Fabregas found him quickly with his runs. In the first incident [last season, at Stamford Bridge], we were a bit guilty of reacting [to Costa]. But in the second, we were caught tactically. Mertesacker had only the opportunity to try to tackle. He got rightly sent off."

Mourinho: Rooney could be benched - he has no priviliges

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united_1nbl89ooa16ojz7f0ib0d04rc.jpg

Jose Mourinho insists Wayne Rooney's status as Manchester United captain will not save him from being benched after a below-par start to the campaign.

Rooney's struggles have been well documented, with the United and England skipper enduring a sluggish season to date and struggling to justify his selection in Mourinho's attack.

Having scoffed at Louis van Gaal's decision to play Rooney deep in midfield last term, Mourinho utilised the same tactic in last weekend's defeat to Watford, before the 30-year-old led the line against Northampton Town in Wednesday's EFL Cup win.

Rooney has scored just once in eight games for club and country in 2016-17, with Paul Pogba's stuttering start to life back at Old Trafford having attributed to Rooney's deployment in the No.10 role.Asked if the captain's armband gave Rooney more leverage in selection matters, Mourinho said: "No, not at all.

"Wayne is the captain of the club. He's trusted by the players, he's trusted by myself and he represents the club in a fantastic way as a player and person."But in football, everyone is the same and if he has to go on the bench, he goes on the bench.

"If he has to stay at home, he stays at home, but that doesn't mean you don't trust him or you have a problem. Not at all. We have no problems."He's our captain, but of course, no privileges. He's like anyone else."

United welcome Premier League champions Leicester City to Old Trafford on Saturday, with all eyes on Mourinho's team selection after snapping a three-game losing streak at Sixfields in midweek.
