:love:Manchester United 4-1 Leicester City: Rooney watches on as Pogba inspires demolition

    hd-manchester-united_58eayq0jt0hh1tvd8tsz69s62.jpg

Wayne Rooney watched from the Manchester United bench as Paul Pogba inspired a 4-1 dismantling of champions Leicester City in Saturday's Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

The world's most expensive player headed in his first goal for the club after Chris Smalling, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford had all found the net in United's first-half rout to help banish thoughts of back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Watford.

Jose Mourinho caused a stir by dropping out-of-sorts captain Rooney to the bench, though he stuck with the same 4-2-3-1 system, with Pogba - who has also faced criticism - excelling in a deeper role alongside Ander Herrera.

Any concerns over a repeat of the turgid performance away to Watford were soon dispelled, as United's pace and power pinned Leicester back before Smalling's header gave them a deserved lead.

The home side showed glimpses of flair play seldom seen under Louis van Gaal or David Moyes, and Mata made it 2-0 when he completed a fine team move on 37 minutes.

A shell-shocked Leicester soon found themselves out of the game, as Rashford and the brilliant Pogba pounced from two corners in quick succession to give United a first four-goal half-time lead in a home league game since their 6-1 thrashing of Arsenal in February 2001.

Demarai Gray's sensational strike on 59 minutes gave Leicester the slenderest of lifelines, but United held firm to move temporarily to within three points of league leaders City, while the champions now have just seven points from six games.

United were rewarded for a bright and busy start in the 22nd minute when Smalling rose unchallenged at the far post to head down and beyond former Red Devil Ron-Robert Zieler from Blind's corner.

Rashford sliced high and wide when Ibrahimovic sent him clean through on goal, before the big Swede spun and volleyed over the crossbar after Pogba's glorious chip, as United began to play with some long-awaited flair.

And some more fine team play brought a second goal in the 37th minute. Pogba and Mata combined on the edge of the area, Jesse Lingard flicked the ball back into the latter's path, and the Spaniard arrowed his shot beyond the right hand of Zieler.

The home side had a third three minutes later. Blind caught Leicester cold with a quickly taken short corner to Mata, who had plenty of time to pick out Rashford to slide the ball home.

Old Trafford was in full voice by this point, but the noise reached deafening levels just two minutes later when Pogba powered Blind's corner beyond Zieler to get off the mark for United.

Ranieri - most likely with one eye on the Champions League clash with Porto on Tuesday - took off Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy at half-time, and substitute Gray gave the travelling fans something to cheer when he cut in from the left 30 yards out and lashed an unstoppable shot beyond David de Gea and into the top corner.

De Gea clawed another Gray effort away from the top corner before Rooney was given a 10-minute run-out in the closing stages, as United saw out a morale-boosting win that will raise plenty of questions over the future of the captain.

:)Mourinho: I trust 'my man' Rooney completely

    waynerooney-cropped_9l3il7pj3q8x14cjstz26mzwr.jpg

Jose Mourinho maintained Wayne Rooney has a big part to play for Manchester United despite dropping the captain for Saturday's 4-1 Premier League win over Leicester City.

United were rampant during the first half at Old Trafford, with Chris Smalling, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba all on target before the break as Rooney watched on.

But speaking after the match, Mourinho insisted 83rd-minute substitute Rooney retained his trust after a string of heavily criticised displays during the opening weeks of the season.

"He is a big player for me, a big player for United and a big player for this country," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "I have nothing else to say, he is my man. I trust him completely.

"His team won, his United won. That's normal [that he is happy]."

Juventus still Scudetto favourites – De Boer

    frankdeboer-cropped_12xbsumv1zma9zxpov364mhwj.jpg

Inter boss Frank de Boer was keen to quell title talk ahead of Sunday's Serie A match with Bologna, calling Juventus favourites.

The Dutchman kickstarted his Inter reign with a 2-1 win over champions Juventus last weekend, a victory that was backed up by a 2-0 midweek triumph at Empoli.
Inter lie fifth in the table, two points behind Juventus heading into the weekend. But De Boer is under no illusions over the strong hand still held by his counterpart Massimiliano Allegri.

"I don't want to talk about the Scudetto, because we know who is the favourite for the Scudetto," he said of Juventus at a pre-match news conference."Our objective is to win game by game, work hard and get results, not talk about the Scudetto. This is not the right moment."

Brazil forward Gabriel Barbosa was an unused substitute at Empoli and De Boer is ready to give him an Inter debut at San Siro.

"He needs to learn our philosophy and how we want to press, to attack, as all these are very important things," the former Ajax boss added."I saw in training that he has a lot of quality, but we need to take it one step at a time. He is ready to make his debut.

"The great thing about Gabigol is that he can dribble without looking at the ball, so he has a vision of the game and where he's going. Not many players can do that."

Hamburg 0-1 Bayern Munich: Late Kimmich strike preserves perfect start

    joshua-kimmich-bundesliga-hamburg-v-bayern-240916_jvozq6ozs4e21lyahlufvbwu3.jpg

Joshua Kimmich struck in the 88th minute as Bayern Munich made it eight successive wins in all competitions this season by downing struggling Hamburg 1-0 at the Volksparkstadion.

David Alaba, Javi Martinez, Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski had earlier all been foiled by a series of magnificent saves from home goalkeeper Rene Adler.

But Bayern's incessant late pressure finally told when Franck Ribery got away down the left and picked out Kimmich, who swept the ball home from close range.

The result moves Carlo Ancelotti's men three points clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table, but they did suffer a blow when key defender Mats Hummels limped off early in the second half with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Defeat was tough on Hamburg, who would have been delighted with a point having come into the game languishing in 16th place after making their worst start to a Bundesliga season for five years.

But Bruno Labbadia's men will have taken plenty of positives from a spirited and defensively disciplined display, with Adler set to receive most of the plaudits for a magnificent display of shot-stopping.Nabil Bahoui missed a glorious opportunity to give the home side the lead, shooting tamely at Manuel Neuer having been played in by Bobby Wood.

At the other end, a sweeping Bayern move ended with Adler producing a superb reflex save to parry Alaba's header, although the Austrian international was subsequently adjudged to have pushed his marker in order to meet Philipp Lahm's cross.

Alaba was the creator of his side's next chance on 18 minutes, delivering a fine ball from the left which was headed narrowly over by Lewandowski.

The visitors began to dominate possession as the half wore, but Hamburg looked lively on the break, with United States international Wood at the heart of their better moments.

And they came close to taking a shock lead from one such counter-attack just before the break as Bahoui picked out Wood and his header back across goal was scrambled clear by Javi Martinez before the onrushing Nicolai Muller could not slide the ball home.

As the second half progressed, however, Bayern upped the tempo and came close to breaking the deadlock three times in as many minutes either side of the hour-mark.The impressive Adler produced another fine save to foil Lewandowski from close-range before Johan Djourou's perfectly timed block kept out Martinez's goalbound effort.

Hamburg enjoyed another let-off after Emir Spahic appeared to clip Lewandowski as the Pole prepared to shoot, but the referee waved away Bayern's impassioned penalty appeals.

On 70 minutes, Adler was called into action again, this time to parry a well-struck Alaba free-kick and moments later, the former Bayer Leverkusen man produced an even more impressive block to keep out a fierce drive from Kimmich.

Thomas Muller's effort was also kept out by Hamburg's man of the match as the hosts looked set to hang on for a battling point, but it was not to be as Kimmich pounced to ensure that all three points would be heading to Bavaria.

Liverpool 5-1 Hull City: Milner grabs double as Reds run riot

    james-milner-premier-league-liverpool-v-hull-city-240916_fctlkdl92jb51a329v2hrwz4a.jpg

Liverpool made it four wins in a row in all competitions with a comfortable 5-1 Premier League victory over 10-man Hull City on Saturday.

Goals from Adam Lallana, James Milner and Sadio Mane and a stunning Philippe Coutinho strike were enough to see off Mike Phelan's side, who played for more than an hour at Anfield with depleted ranks after Ahmed Elmohamady was dismissed.

Liverpool, who followed up their 2-1 win at Chelsea with a 3-0 EFL Cup victory at Derby County this week, made their most of some early dominance when Lallana steered in Coutinho's pass after 17 minutes.

Hull suffered a 4-1 loss to Arsenal in their last league game, in which Jake Livermore was sent off for a handball, and it was a painful case of deja vu when referee Andre Marriner issued Elmohamady a straight red card for blocking Coutinho's shot near the goalline with his arm.

Milner tucked away the penalty before Mane's crisp finish made it 3-0, and though David Meyler grabbed a lifeline early in the second half, Coutinho struck almost immediately afterwards to restore Liverpool's three-goal advantage.

Jurgen Klopp's side capped a dominant display after Daniel Sturridge won a dubious penalty, allowing Milner to dispatch his second spot-kick of the match and move Liverpool above rivals Everton in the top four on goal difference.

The hosts were in charge from the off and got the goal they deserved after 17 minutes. Coutinho surged into space and fed Lallana in the penalty area, who showed clever control to steady himself before dragging a low shot back across goal and into the bottom-right corner.

Any hope of a Hull recovery looked to be lost when Elmohamady was sent off after blocking Coutinho's goal-bound shot with his arm just in front of the line, allowing Milner to sweep his penalty low past David Marshall's despairing dive.

Mane's deflected shot rattled the top of Hull's crossbar before he steered an effort narrowly over from the middle of the box, and Georginio Wijnaldum was denied from distance by Marshall as Liverpool's pressure showed no sign of abating.

But Marshall could do nothing to stop Mane making it 3-0, as Hull's defence allowed the former Southampton man to control Lallana's pass and turn before firing into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Hull fans sensed a miraculous comeback when Meyler - with his side's first shot of the match - drilled low past league debutant Loris Karius after Liverpool failed to clear a corner six minutes into the second half.

That hope lasted barely 60 seconds, however, as Coutinho worked some space 25 yards from goal before rifling a shot beyond the reach of Marshall and into the top corner.

Klopp brought on Sturridge and he made a quick impact, skipping into the Hull box before going to ground under minimal contact from Andrew Robertson, allowing Milner to slot home his second penalty of the day and seal another emphatic victory.

Swansea City 1-3 Manchester City: Aguero returns with a double as visitors keep winning

    sergio-aguero-swansea-manchester-city-premier-league_1k1n36wavgnqr1qd5q6jbd8led.jpg

Manchester City made it 10 wins out of 10 under Pep Guardiola with a 3-1 victory over Swansea City.

Sergio Aguero returned from a three-match domestic suspension to score either side of Fernando Llorente's maiden Swansea goal, as the hosts posed plenty of questions for the Premier League leaders in a display that should offer encouragement to under-fire boss Francesco Guidolin.

Aguero's second of the game and 11th in six appearances this season came from the penalty spot in the 65th minute of a pulsating contest, which Raheem Sterling settled decisively with a breakaway goal 13 minutes from time.

Guardiola's team are now four points ahead of Tottenham at the summit, who they face at White Hart Lane next week on the back of a Champions League trip to Celtic, though the sight of Kevin De Bruyne hobbling off late on put a dampener on the Spaniard's afternoon.

The opening goal arrived via some wonderfully incisive penalty-box play from Aguero in the ninth minute – his touch taking Bacary Sagna's low cross out of his feet and creating space to drive a finish through Lukasz Fabianski's legs.

Swansea were scarcely affected by the setback and, after Claudio Bravo saved a deflected attempt from Llorente, the former Juventus man controlled Gylfi Sigurdsson's pass as Sagna lost his footing and lashed a rising left-footed shot into the right corner

Guidolin's men continued to threaten as Llorente made a nuisance of himself and driving runs forward from the likes of Sigurdsson and Wayne Routledge asked persistent questions of Guardiola's high defensive line.

Aguero rippled the roof of the net with a curling 25-yarder and Mike van der Hoorn did likewise from Angel Rangel's cross at the other end, with the furious pace unrelenting.

De Bruyne should have restored City's lead with a third goal in as many league matches, but dragged wide when a clever flick from Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan's first-time pass sent him clear of the Swansea defence.Aleksandar Kolarov could not bundle home Nicolas Otamendi's header from a De Bruyne free-kick and it remained all square at the interval.

Routledge looked to remedy that as Swansea made the better start to the second period but slid the pass too far ahead of Llorente and beyond the far post after linking nicely with Sigurdsson.

The action continued to flow from end to end, with blocks from Jordi Amat and Van der Hoorn denying De Bruyne and Aguero respectively either side of Sigurdsson smashing a 54th-minute volley.

De Bruyne was operating more centrally after the break and to greater effect, releasing Sterling to shoot into the side netting from an acute angle with an hour played.

The Belgian won the penalty that allowed Manchester City to restore their lead as Van der Hoorn clumsily put an arm cross his face and he tumbled to the floor.
Aguero lifted the spot kick into the centre of the goal as Fabianski tumbled away to his left.

Swansea's goalkeeper saved superbly when a deflected David Silva shot appeared to be spinning under his crossbar and Fernandinho headed the resulting corner wide.

It took a Swansea set-piece for Guardiola's men to add their third, with De Bruyne streaming forward and Sterling producing a wonderful piece of skill to beat Kyle Naughton – ignoring Aguero's pleas for a pass – before slottng in.

There was concern for the Manchester City boss during the closing stages as the influential De Bruyne hobbled off, but he was left to one of the harder-earned wins in a perfect 10.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Tottenham: Son shines as Spurs' bright start continues

    son-heung-min-tottenham-premier-league_mt98objqmj6x1ry163w7n3pkd.jpg

Son Heung-min netted twice to help Tottenham to a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough in Saturday's Premier League encounter at the Riverside Stadium.

The South Korea international endured a difficult first season at Spurs following his move from Bayer Leverkusen as he scored just four times in 28 league games and was even linked with a move away from the club ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.
He eventually opted to stay put, though, and has been in impressive form since his return from the Rio Olympics.

The attacker put in a man-of-the-match performance in the 4-0 win over Stoke City and once more led his side the way on Saturday as he netted a double to take his tally to four strikes in just three league outings.Son opened the scoring early on after being set up by Vincent Janssen, before doubling Spurs' lead halfway through the first half with a fine solo effort.

Middlesbrough pulled one back after the break via Ben Gibson, but failed to level matters as the away side cruised to victory to make it 14 points from six games, while Boro have collected just five points following their third consecutive defeat.

Tottenham were on the front foot from the start, with Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli going close before Son opened the scoring in the seventh minute following some great work from Janssen. The Dutchman did well to hold up the ball after being played in by Christian Eriksen before laying it off for Son, who danced past three opponents and beat goalkeeper Victor Valdes with a low left-footed shot.

Son continued to cause the Middlesbrough defence all kinds of problems in the opening 45 minutes and the 24-year-old doubled his side's lead in the 23rd minute. He initially seemed to have lost the ball after being set up by Janssen, only to win it back and shrug off two defenders before firing past Valdes.

Valdes was again called into action shortly after the half-hour mark when Sissoko tried his luck from close range after Eriksen's blocked shot ended up in his feet, the goalkeeper emerging victorious this time around.

Alli then felt he should have been awarded a penalty after being shoved to the ground by Cristhian Stuani as Spurs went in search of a third goal, with the England international again asking for a spot-kick in the 41st minute when Adam Clayton seemingly handled the ball, before he blasted a gilt-edged chance over the crossbar in the dying seconds of the first half.

Middlesbrough brought on Adama Traore and Jordan Rhodes after the break in search of the 2-1 and they eventually pulled one back in the 65th minute when Gibson headed home after a free-kick from Stewart Downing.

Boro could not net a second, though, as Rhodes had a good header saved by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, with Tottenham eventually recording their third Premier League win on the trot.

Sunderland 2-3 Crystal Palace: Benteke wins it late to complete fightback

    hd-christian-benteke-crystal-palace-premier-league-24092016_i1fr6phj1y2nzpkg0wvii2w5.jpg

Christian Benteke scored a dramatic injury-time winner as Crystal Palace fought back from two goals down to beat sorry Sunderland 3-2 in the Premier League.

Jermain Defoe's double either side of half-time had seemingly done enough to earn the Black Cats and their under pressure manager David Moyes a first league win of the campaign.

However, Sunderland were left reeling by Palace's fightback at the Stadium of Light, which started with Joe Ledley - whose earlier mistake led to Defoe's opener - scoring with a deflected effort.James McArthur's header then drew Palace level in the 76th minute to leave the home fans stunned.

But there was worse to come for the Sunderland faithful when Benteke headed home Lee Chong-yong's free-kick deep into stoppage time for his seventh Premier League goal against the Black Cats.Palace have now won three straight league games, while defeat for Sunderland leaves them bottom of the table.

After a scrappy opening, Palace carved out the game's first chance and Jordan Pickford did well to cling onto Benteke's towering header from Joel Ward's cross.

Sunderland lost Steven Pienaar to an apparent hamstring injury, while Benteke continued to cause problems and hit a thumping volley over the crossbar.

The home side responded shortly before the half-hour mark and Defoe met Patrick van Aanholt's delivery with a neat flick that trickled wide.

Benteke then fired low into Pickford's clutches before Yohan Cabaye's half-volley faded past the far post, but Palace gifted Sunderland the opener in the 39th minute.

Ledley received Steve Mandanda's pass and, when swarmed by red and white shirts, attempted to pick out McArthur only to find Defoe, who clinically rolled his finish under the goalkeeper.

Palace almost responded before the break but Damien Delaney failed to sufficiently direct Benteke's header back towards the goal, while Andros Townsend's free-kick dipped wide.

The visitors were on the attack again after the restart, countering from a cleared Sunderland free-kick, but Pickford got up to parry Jason Puncheon's shot after Cabaye had slipped him in.With an hour played, though, Defoe doubled the hosts' lead.

The former Tottenham striker latched onto Javier Manquillo's pass and, although his first shot was block, Duncan Watmore returned the ball into the box and Defoe lashed home with a left-footed drive. However, the two-goal advantage did not last long. Palace rushed up the other end and McArthur teed up Ledley to shoot hard and low, his strike clipping Van Aanholt's stray leg and beating Pickford.

With Sunderland eyeing a clincher and their visitors after an equaliser, the game was now flowing from end to end and Defoe fired over in pursuit of a hat-trick.

But the next goal came at the other end. Substitute Ezekiel Fryers made a quick contribution when he whipped a stunning cross into the area that McArthur crashed beyond Pickford with a header.Townsend looked to have wasted a final chance for Palace to win the game as he curled wide on a late break, but further drama was to follow.

Substitute Lee Chung-Yong floated a free-kick from the left and Benteke attacked the ball to bury a header into the bottom corner, clinching the points for Palace and extending Sunderland's winless Premier League start.

Sporting Gijon 0-5 Barcelona: Neymar hits double as visitors return to winning ways

    neymar-barcelona-sporting_10g4neplsxwik1ajh359rsddvi.jpg

Barcelona overcame the absence of the injured Lionel Messi to put pressure on Real Madrid with an emphatic 5-0 win at Sporting Gijon in LaLiga on Saturday.

First-half goals from Luis Suarez and Rafinha put the champions in command of the contest at El Molinon, where the hosts finished with 10 men following the dismissal of captain Alberto Lora for a second bookable offence.

Neymar's double and an Arda Turan goal added gloss to the scoreline late on against demoralised opposition. The win sees Barca move top of the table on goal difference, level on points – at least temporarily – with Madrid, who are in action away to Las Palmas later in the day.

Messi, ruled out for three weeks by a groin injury suffered in the 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, was one of five absentees from Barca's regular starting XI, with Andres Iniesta, Ivan Rakitic, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba all rested, perhaps with a midweek Champions League trip to face Borussia Monchengladbach in mind.

The changes may have contributed to a slow start from Barca, who survived a scare in the 20th minute when goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen escaped without even a yellow card after briefly handling the ball outside his area, Sporting's subsequent free-kick coming to nothing.

The visitors slowly began to exert some sustained pressure on the Sporting goal, Andre Gomes firing over twice in the space of two minutes approaching the half-hour mark.

And Luis Enrique's side duly made the breakthrough in the 30th minute, when Arda's delivery over the top of the defence drew out Ivan Cuellar, who did not get there in time to clear the danger.

Suarez nudged the ball around the stranded keeper, collected it on the other side and stroked a simple finish into an empty net.

Just two minutes later it was 2-0, Neymar playing Sergi Roberto into space down the right flank. His cross was met at the near post by the head of Rafinha, leaving Cuellar with no chance.

And while Sporting had been holding their own and threatening sporadically after the break, any slim hopes of a comeback ended in the 73rd minute, when Lora received a second yellow card for a late tackle on the outstanding Roberto.

Barca head coach Luis Enrique, who began his distinguished playing career alongside Sporting boss Abelardo Fernandez at El Molinon, protected his prized assets further as the match petered out, Suarez and Sergio Busquets replaced by Paco Alcacer and Denis Suarez respectively, as, with the match won, the trip to Borussia-Park on Wednesday became Barca's priority.

Alcacer is yet to open his Barca account following an off-season switch from Valencia, but he had a hand in the third goal, meeting Roberto's pass from the right to cannon a fierce shot against the crossbar. Neymar gathered the rebound, gliding around Cuellar to tap home a simple finish.

Denis Suarez then did brilliantly running at the sorry Sporting defence, slipping in Neymar wide on the left side of the box, the Brazil international grabbing his second and Barca's fifth with a shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. And only the woodwork denied Neymar a hat-trick in injury time.

Bournemouth 1-0 Everton: Stanislas ends Toffees' unbeaten start

    junior-stanislas-adam-smith-bournemouth-everton-24092016_7gsliubxu9gl1r72knn9a9wva.jpg

Junior Stanislas once again proved the scourge of Everton as his superb first-half strike secured a 1-0 victory for Bournemouth and ended the Toffees' unbeaten Premier League start under Ronald Koeman.

Stanislas - who netted twice in the thrilling 3-3 draw in the corresponding fixture last term, including a dramatic 98th-minute leveller - put Eddie Howe's side ahead midway through a first-half that they dominated at the Vitality Stadium.

Both Jack Wilshere, on his full home debut, and Harry Arter had rattled the woodwork in the early stages, before Stanislas's sublime long-range effort did the damage for the hosts.Koeman's side pressed hard for a leveller in a less eventful second-half with Ross Barkley particularly wasteful in front of goal.

But Bournemouth frustrated their visitors and held on to seal their first win in six attempts against Everton, bringing the Merseysiders' run of four successive league victories to an end.

In a lively opening, Callum Wilson flashed a header wide for Bournemouth in the second minute, while Artur Boruc reacted instinctively to prevent Romelu Lukaku nodding Everton ahead.

Bournemouth were soon in the ascendency, though, and Seamus Coleman did well to deflect Wilshere's effort onto the crossbar after Everton were carved open by a swift counter-attack.

Howe's side continued to grow in confidence and Arter was next to test Everton's defence as he drove into the area before hammering a low strike against the right-hand upright. The hosts were finally rewarded in the 23rd minute when Stanislas' thumping 25-yard effort nestled in the top-left corner.

The Cherries almost went further ahead 10 minutes before the interval when Charlie Daniels latched onto Phil Jagielka's miscued clearance, but the defender's header was off target.

Surprisingly, Koeman decided against making changes at the break, and though Bournemouth continued to build on their momentum, Everton managed to open up their defence 10 minutes after the restart – Barkley heading wide despite being unmarked from Coleman's cross.

Koeman introduced Tom Cleverley and Gerard Deulofeu as the hour-mark approached, and the latter almost had an immediate impact as his looping cross was clawed off the line by Boruc.

Everton looked brighter following the changes, but Bournemouth's defence remained solid, though Yannick Bolasie, following good combination play with Lukaku, did power a strike just over the bar.

Enner Valencia was brought on in the closing stages, and the West Ham loanee should have levelled it in the 89th minute, but he could only skew wide from close-range as Everton slumped to their second straight defeat following the EFL Cup loss to Norwich City.

Bournemouth's victory was, however, marred slightly in stoppage time - Adam Smith picking up a painful blow to his face following a collision with Ashley Williams.

Palermo 0-1 Juventus: Goldaniga own goal gifts visitors win

    gonzalez-higuain-palermo-juventus-serie-a_1tfutixiwfk841gt3qxnr4lfp8.jpg

Juventus consolidated their position at the top of Serie A as an own goal from Edoardo Goldaniga secured a 1-0 win at Palermo.

Mario Mandzukic, Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain had all gone close for Massimiliano Allegri's men before Goldaniga deflected Dani Alves' long-range strike into his own net early in the second half.

The visitors thus secured a ninth successive league victory over the Sicilian side, who have failed to score a single goal during a run of defeats that dates back to 2011.

Roberto De Zerbi's side did little to suggest that they could build upon their surprise midweek win at Atalanta, rarely troubling a Juventus defence that remained impressively resolute throughout.

The result marked the first time in their history that Palermo have lost their first three home games of the season and leaves them languishing in the lower reaches of the table.

The Turin side, meanwhile, will head into Tuesday's Champions League clash against Dynamo Zagreb in confident mood after a commanding display at the atmospheric Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Juventus wasted no time in making their attacking intentions clear, Higuain firing over after being picked out by Pjanic with just 12 seconds on the clock.

Three yellow cards then followed in quick succession, with Goldaniga and Juventus duo Leonardo Bonucci and Mandzukic all going into the book as the contest became increasingly fractious. The league leaders continued to look the more likely as the half wore on, with Pjanic their main creative force.

It was his corner that picked out the unmarked Mandzukic who headed wastefully over after 12 minutes and the Bosnian midfielder also supplied the long ball that sent Higuain in on goal, only for home goalkeeper Josip Posavec to snuff out the danger by diving bravely at the striker's feet.

Posavec was again called into action in the 33rd minute, this time palming away Mario Lemina's angled strike, and he was also equal to Pjanic's weakly struck shot on the stroke of half-time.

In contrast to the visitors, Palermo struggled to find any attacking fluency, with Haitam Aleesami driving their only meaningful effort of the first half straight at Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus started the second half as brightly as they had the first and hit the front after 49 minutes, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.Posavec looked to have Alves' speculative long-range strike well covered until it struck the luckless Goldaniga and flew into the opposite corner of the net.

The hosts struggled to muster much in terms a response to that setback and in fact could have fallen further behind just after the hour-mark when Posavec was forced to tip over a thumping volley from Mandzukic.

And three minutes later the two Croatians went head-to-head again with the same result as Posavec pulled off another fine save to prevent his compatriot from making the game safe for his side.

Palermo did mount some concerted pressure in the final quarter, but failed to seriously trouble Buffon as the visitors secured their fifth league win of the season.

Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea: Gunners stroll to victory over Conte's men

    ozil-arsenal-chelsea-premier-league_1bt9zc52qulxr1xqbuq6rgucby.jpg

Arsenal cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Chelsea to hand Antonio Conte's side back-to-back Premier League defeats in the London derby at Emirates Stadium.

A match expected to be a closely contested affair was blown apart in the 11th minute when Alexis Sanchez capitalised on a dreadful error by Gary Cahill to open the scoring on his 100th Arsenal outing.

Theo Walcott - also reaching a milestone in his 350th game for the Gunners - added a quickfire second, crowning a glorious passing move, and there was further attacking brilliance as the influential Mesut Ozil made it 3-0 five minutes before half-time.

A first league win over the Blues since October 2011 moves Arsene Wenger's team up to third in the table behind Manchester City and Tottenham, who meet next weekend, while Conte has work to do as the early stages of his Chelsea reign veer off course.

Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas made his first league start of the season, on the back of scoring twice in Tuesday's 4-2 EFL Cup win over Leicester City, but Arsenal swamped their opponents in central areas, while reverting to a back three early in the second period did nothing to restore Chelsea's poise.

They have added a solitary point after three consecutive wins at the start of the campaign and are now down in eighth, below Crystal Palace on goal difference.Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla had an early shot pushed to safety by Thibaut Courtois but Chelsea appeared to have settled quickly before a moment to forget from Cahill.

The England centre-back received the ball from Branislav Ivanovic under slight pressure and hesitated before playing an ill-advised and under-hit backpass that Sanchez pounced on to race towards goal and chip home a classy finish. If the opener was entirely Chelsea's making, they could do little two minutes and 19 seconds later as Cazorla, Ozil and Alex Iwobi combined in a slick passing move before Walcott converted Hector Bellerin's low cross.

Willian flashed a drive across goal wide and Eden Hazard had a shot blocked as Chelsea's creative talents sought a response, but their humiliation continued five minutes before half-time.

Ozil was at the heart of things once more, spinning away from N'Golo Kante and galloping forward on the break to receive a chipped return ball from Sanchez. The strike that sealed another wonderfully worked goal was not completely cleanly hit, but Ozil's volley into the turf sailed over Courtois and in off the far post.

Granit Xhaka was on for the injured Francis Coquelin by that stage and early in the second half the Switzerland international released Walcott inside the Chelsea box but his attempt to pick out Sanchez was wasteful.

The ineffective Fabregas made way after 54 minutes at the scene of his former glories, with Marcos Alonso's introduction heralding a switch to the 3-5-2 formation Conte favoured at Juventus and with the Italian national team.

Arsenal still continued to cut through his team at will and Courtois was furious at the flimsy defensive cover in front of him when he denied Walcott with his legs in the 69th minute.

Further gloss to the scoreline never arrived but this was nevertheless one of the most comprehensive wins over a fierce rival that Wenger has enjoyed during a reign one week away from its 20th anniversary.

Las Palmas 2-2 Real Madrid: Zidane's men stumble again

    las-palmas-real-madrid-laliga_mwkqd6cmlvij1pwwflx112p0c.jpg

Real Madrid dropped points for the second time in a week as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Late substitute Sergio Araujo scored a dramatic equaliser six minutes from time to earn Quique Setien's side a point and condemn Madrid to a second Liga draw in four days.

Marco Asensio put Los Blancos ahead after 33 minutes but the home side were level just five minutes later when Tana took advantage of some loose defending to score.

Karim Benzema replaced Asensio as Zinedine Zidane went on the attack after 65 minutes and the France striker scored his second goal of the season from close range to put Madrid back into the lead.

But, playing without injured duo Marcelo and Casemiro, the visitors were not at their best defensively and they were exposed again in the 85th minute when Araujo evaded goalkeeper Kiko Casilla to earn Las Palmas a positive result.

The home team's goalkeeper Javi Varas made a good early save when Alvaro Morata was allowed a free header at goal from Toni Kroos' free-kick, and the home side were relieved to see Cristiano Ronaldo fail to control a pass from Morata when the Portuguese ace was ideally placed to score.

Madrid restricted Las Palmas to tentative attacking forays and long-range shots early on, while Morata was given precious little quality service at the other end and had to feed on scraps.

Casilla was finally tested when Tana flicked Jonathan Viera's chipped ball towards goal, and again when Tana shot from distance, but the goalkeeper was equal to both attempts.

With conventional routes to goal proving fruitless, Madrid took the lead when defender Nacho hurtled down the left flank and struck a shot that Varas could only parry. The rebound rose perfectly onto the head of Asensio, who nodded the ball home.

Five minutes later, Momo sent over a cross that evaded Raphael Varane and Tana had time to collect the ball in the box, control it, and fire a low show into the corner of Casilla's net to make it 1-1.

Gareth Bale looked Real's most potent attacking threat and he tested Varas with stinging shots at the end of the first half and the start of the second, drawing good saves from the busy Las Palmas keeper.

Ronaldo had the ball in the net after 56 minutes only for the attempt to be ruled out for offside, and Zidane sent on Benzema for Asensio just after the hour mark. The former Lyon man had a chance to score with his first touch but shot tamely at Varas when Kroos' corner fell to him inside the six-yard box.

Two minutes later Morata broke down the middle and fed Ronaldo, whose shot was parried by Varas straight into the path of Benzema, the France striker lashing the ball high into the net.

When Zidane took Ronaldo off it looked like the result was safe, but Las Palmas ventured forward in the 85th minute and Aythami's superb knock-down found Araujo.

The Argentine forward hit a shot that came back off Casilla and he collected the rebound to bundle the ball home, earning his side a share of the spoils and condemning the heavyweight visitors to more frustration.

Selfish Ronaldo must understand Madrid comes first after latest tantrum

    cristiano-ronaldo-marco-asensio-las-palmas-real-madrid-laliga_hqv45ye6gbuy16d4bifa7cwqd.jpg

No player is bigger than a club like Real Madrid - and that includes Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward was surprisingly substituted by coach Zinedine Zidane at Las Palmas and muttered to himself in annoyance as he trudged off the pitch. But he needs to understand that the team comes first.

Ronaldo had helped to set up Madrid's second goal and what looked like the winner for Karim Benzema against the Canary Islanders, but was brought off moments later and he seemed anything but amused as he walked past his coach.

Zidane, who had earlier sent on Benzema in an inspired change which resulted in the vital breakthrough, was then perhaps left to rue taking off Ronaldo when Sergio Araujo came up with a late leveller as the fixture finished 2-2.

However, his decision was understandable. Ronaldo remains a long way from full fitness and with a Champions League clash away to Dortmund coming up on Tuesday, the Frenchman was keen to give his famous forward a rest.

Cristiano had once again appeared off the pace for much of the match - just as he had in the 1-1 draw at home to Villarreal on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu. Back from the injury that saw him sidelined in the final of Euro 2016 and out for the season's start, he is still some way short of his peak physical condition.

"We have a game on Tuesday and we have to give him a rest sometimes," Zidane said after the match. "He was playing well, I have to choose, and I was thinking about Tuesday."

Asked about the 31-year-old's reaction, he added: "Of course he always wants to stay on the pitch, but I have to think of my players and particularly about Cristiano. We have a game on Tuesday and he has to rest sometimes. This doesn't change anything."

It should not. Ronaldo, like Lionel Messi, is keen to play every minute of every game - but he has to realise that on occasions a rest is necessary. And given that he has just returned from a long-term injury, it would also be unwise to overdo it at this stage.

Ultra-competitive until the end, the Portuguese will have wanted to stay on for the full 90 minutes. And, in hindsight, he may have been useful in the dying minutes as Madrid were pegged back and ended up with just a point for the second time in four days as their lead in La Liga was cut to a single point.

When his anger dies down, though, he will do well to understand that his coach is only trying to protect him and preserve the best interests of Real Madrid. And that is more important than one man playing every minute of every game.

That was how football should be - Klopp

    jurgen-klopp_u6nfyq28ayp13pori55vn0z0.jpg

Jurgen Klopp was delighted with Liverpool's first-half performance in Saturday's 5-1 mauling of Hull City.

Klopp's men were rampant, racking up a fourth win in a row in all competitions, with Adam Lallana giving Liverpool an early lead, which was soon doubled from the spot by James Milner after Ahmed Elmohamady was sent off for handball.

The goals continued to flow, with Sadio Mane on target and a wonderful strike from Philippe Coutinho adding the fourth, while another Milner penalty rounded off a victory that thrilled Klopp."All good. Actually, the first half was brilliant," said Klopp. "That was how football should be if you are able to do it. You have to show this.

"In the first few minutes you could really see how strong Hull could be in counter-attacks – really good, really strong and difficult to defend. We showed it in analysis, but I saw there was a little bit of a surprise about the speed and power of Hull in these situations.

"Nothing happened and then we played football. We were really strong in possession, but the most impressive thing was the counter-pressing in the game, with this big number of possession.

"I think it was the best game in counter-pressing that we have played until now. That was very important, because we scored the goals right and all that stuff, but winning the ball back in these moments is so important and it becomes really difficult for the opponent to increase confidence."

Liverpool have scored 71 goals in the Premier League since Klopp's appointment in October 2015, more than any other side, with the German believing there is still more to come from his team.

"I was really pleased with the performance in the first half," Klopp said. "The second half was not [as] exciting, but still good, maybe not at 100 per cent concentration."I don't know how many times in my life, and I've had four or five hundred games as a manager, that I've won 5-1 in this kind of way.

"It's all good and I don't want to criticise, but I think we could have done better in the second half, honestly. It was good, even in the second half, but not as good as it could have been. I am really happy – really happy. "I'm quite a thankful person usually, so I am really thankful for the first half! In the second half, a little bit better would have been nice.

"We have a lot of things to improve and one of the things is if you are brilliant, you need to be brilliant for 95 minutes. We were brilliant first half and second half we were still good, but not brilliant anymore. It's all good and only my problem."

Coutinho's brilliant goal was arguably the highlight for Liverpool, with the Brazilian continuing his excellent form, and Klopp said it was typical of the playmaker's class."I saw a lot of them when I was still in Germany, to be honest," the former Borussia Dortmund boss added. "I think he always scores goals like this!

"I would like to take the credit for his shooting ability, but I'm not responsible for this. It's very good. In this moment it was the perfect finish, the absolutely perfect finish for the situation."
