Barcelona without Mathieu for three weeks

    jeremy-mathieu-cropped_15l6tnqem24ez1xrsm0eymgiau.jpg

Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu faces a three-week spell on the sidelines after suffering a calf injury in their 1-0 Supercopa de Catalunya defeat at the hands of Espanyol.Mathieu featured from the start in Tuesday's encounter, but was withdrawn in the 54th minute after sustaining the problem.

The Frenchman underwent a series of tests on Wednesday and Barcelona have now announced he will be unavailable for an estimated three weeks.

"Test conducted by the medical services on Wednesday morning have revealed that Jeremy Mathieu has injured the soleus in his right leg, which means he is going to be sidelined for an estimated three weeks," a statement on the Catalans' official website reads.
The 32-year-old has made six appearances in all competitions for Barcelona this term, scoring once in the process. He received a red card in their 4-0 Champions League win over Manchester City last week.

Mathieu joins fellow defenders Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba on the sidelines, with the latter two suffering injuries against City.

Neymar would have cost PSG €430m, claims father

    neymar-cropped_mk3yvts601yf11gzquruequ0r.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain would have needed to pay €430million to prise Neymar away from Barcelona before he signed a new contract, according to the player's father.

The Ligue 1 champions were heavily linked with a move for the Brazil star, who moved to Europe to join Barca in 2013, before he penned a new five-year deal at Camp Nou last week.

Neymar's dad has now explained that PSG would have had to pay the €190m termination fee built into the 24-year-old's contract - plus a hefty amount of tax."With regard to the subject of PSG, there is a contradiction, due, apparently, to a lack of understanding," he told Globo Esporte.

"Well, the athlete is subject to pay the termination fine for breach of contract with any club. The club would support this payment in the region of €190m and would also have to compute the tax - in Spain, at the time, it was somewhere around 56 per cent.

"I believe that €430m was not an obscene value. The player was unattainable and priceless, in that Barcelona do not want to sell.

"In fact, even if the value was obscene, it is not my problem. It was the contracted amount."

'You should be playing!' - Man Utd fans STILL supporting outcast Schweinsteiger

Bastian Schweinsteiger may have found first-team football in short supply this season, but there are plenty of Manchester United fans who want to see him in action.

The German midfielder took to Twitter prior to United's League Cup derby against Manchester City to cheer his team on.

And the reaction was overwhelmingly positive from supporters, with many suggesting he deserves a place on the pitch.

Bayern Munich 3-1 Augsburg: Ancelotti's side progress to third round of DFB-Pokal

    green_cl862x6bpt961c0wmr6d61yap.jpg

Julian Green scored his first competitive goal for Bayern Munich as Carlo Ancelotti's side advanced to the third round of the DFB-Pokal with an ultimately comfortable 3-1 victory over Bavarian rivals Augsburg.

In the first of two meetings between the sides in the space of four days, promising youngster Green headed home 41 minutes into an eventful cup tie at the Allianz Arena, with Bayern having raced into an early lead courtesy of Philipp Lahm.
Augsburg had a chance to haul themselves back into the contest from the penalty spot early in the second half, but Manuel Neuer was in fine form to deny Koo Ja-cheol low to his left.

Thomas Muller should have put the result beyond doubt prior to the hour-mark, only for the German forward to blaze over from 12 yards out after Georg Teigl handled in Augsburg's area.

Ji Dong-won's terrific solo effort did apply some pressure on the hosts late on, but substitute David Alaba squeezed a thunderous strike past visiting goalkeeper Marwin Hitz in second-half stoppage time to ensure the defending champions went through.Robert Lewandowski had to settle for a place on the bench, but Bayern did not miss the striker's influence as Lahm put them ahead within two minutes.

After sitting out the 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend, Lahm got his return to Ancelotti's line-up off to the ideal start when he fired home after combining excellently with Muller.

Bayern continued to dominate following the captain's strike, ambitious efforts from Muller and Thiago Alcantara respectively almost extending their advantage.Thiago was dictating the Bundesliga champions' tempo as they continued to control proceedings, and he went close again when his deflected strike whistled wide.

But Bayern did double their tally four minutes before the interval, Muller again the provider as his cross found Green, whose header could not be kept out by Hitz.
Hitz atoned on the stroke of half-time, though, as he somehow kept out Mats Hummels' effort from point-blank range.

Augsburg should have pulled one back three minutes after the restart, Gojko Kacar winning a soft penalty after going down under pressure from Hummels. However, Koo was unable to beat Neuer from the spot and Daniel Baier could only fire wide after reaching the rebound first.

Augsburg then found themselves on the opposite end of a penalty decision 12 minutes into the second half, but Muller fired over after referee Sascha Stegemann pointed to the spot for Teigl's blatant handball.

It looked like it could prove a costly miss in the 68th minute when Ji got the better of Jerome Boateng on the left-hand side of the box and thumped a stinging strike past Neuer. However, the goal sparked Bayern back into life, Renato Sanches going close with a looping header before Thiago drilled narrowly wide.

Ancelotti's side made sure of their place in round three in the 93rd minute when Arturo Vidal played in fellow substitute Alaba, who hammered a venomous strike past Hitz to add gloss to the victory.

West Ham 2-1 Chelsea: Blues' League Cup adventure brought to a half by Bilic's men

    hd-cheikhou-kouyate-west-ham-chelsea_1e3fnzf0axe3e17ezc4wpnzd6z.jpg

West Ham reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup as they beat Chelsea 2-1 on Wednesday, although the tie was the latest game at London Stadium to be marred by unsavoury scenes in the stands.

On a night when Slaven Bilic's men finally seemed at home on the pitch in unfamiliar surroundings following their move away from Upton Park, goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes clinched victory.Roared on by a vociferous crowd, Kouyate crashed a glorious header into the net as both sides attacked in a thrilling first half.

Fernandes' storming strike - his first goal in English football - doubled West Ham's advantage shortly after the break, with their teething problems at this new stadium suddenly appearing a thing of the past, although off the pitch stewards struggled to keep rival fans apart and missiles were thrown.

With issues at the London Stadium regarding the segregation of home and away fans, there had previously been disturbances in Premier League fixtures against Watford and Middlesbrough - leading West Ham to stamp down on some supporters and outline a plan to tackle the trouble ahead of this fixture.

Antonio Conte's Blues won the teams' early-season Premier League clash 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, but, even with captain John Terry back from injury, they could not get contain the Hammers, Gary Cahill pulling one back with the last kick of the match shortly after Eden Hazard had struck the frame of the goal.

The returning Terry flicked an early Willian corner over, and the Brazilian then contributed a fine flick to set N'Golo Kante away into the area, with Darren Randolph standing up to make a firm right-handed stop.

But, after 11 minutes, West Ham led through a stunning opener.

Mark Noble's cross from the left was deep and found Kouyate just inside the box, but the Senegal international rose to direct a magnificent header beyond Asmir Begovic into the far corner.

With the noise levels cranked up another notch, the hosts sought a second; almost finding it as Michail Antonio squeezed a low shot narrowly wide after Dimitri Payet tumbled under pressure from Kante.

Randolph was soon worked again, though, and did brilliantly to tip Nathaniel Chalobah's ferocious drive over the crossbar.

West Ham remained a threat on the counter through the energetic Antonio, but his measured centre was turned off target by Manuel Lanzini, before Begovic parried Payet's free-kick from a similar position wide on the left.

While the Chelsea goalkeeper made another impressive save as Pedro Obiang connected sweetly with a strike from 25 yards, Michy Batshuayi sliced horribly over in front of goal at the other end, and Oscar stabbed a tame effort just past the post. After just three minutes of the second half, though, West Ham got their second.

Payet looked certain to score from Antonio's cross, but Begovic blocked superbly. However, Chelsea could not clear their lines and Fernandes took up possession on the right, cut inside onto his left foot and rifled across the keeper into the bottom corner. As Noble whipped a shot wide from distance, Conte responded by calling rested stars Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Pedro from the bench.

Oscar flicked Hazard's delivery into the side-netting, before Willian dragged hopelessly off target after Costa had run in behind and held the ball up for his team-mate.

Andre Ayew made his return from injury for West Ham in the closing stages and Hazard crashed against the apex of the goal from Costa's pass. Costa then lifted a finish past the near post for Chelsea and Begovic saved from Payet again.

Chelsea belatedly got their goal as Cahill smashed into the net from close range after Cesar Azpilicueta had failed to get a shot away amid a goalmouth scramble, but there was no time for an equaliser and the hosts secured a deserved win.

Cultural Leonesa 1-7 Real Madrid: Morata & Asensio on fire in Copa del Rey

    real-madrid-celebrates-cultural-real-madrid-copa-del-rey_1pim2nko9yo6g1j310mp2eja5s.jpg

Alvaro Morata and Marco Asensio led the way as a much-changed Real Madrid eased to a 7-1 win at third-tier Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey round-of-32 first leg on Wednesday.

Madrid's esteemed attacking trio of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale were among those rested, but the visitors cruised in their absence, with the brilliant Morata and Asensio both scoring twice.

Zinedine Zidane's men needed a helping hand from Cultural for the opener, though, as Gianni Zuiverloon scored an early own goal, before Asensio added a second just after the half-hour mark.

LaLiga leaders Real enjoyed a blistering start to the second period, with Asensio's long-range second sandwiched between two clinical Morata finishes inside the first nine minutes.Their sixth goal was the pick of the bunch, though, as centre-back Nacho Fernandez scored a sensational acrobatic effort.

The hosts pulled one back towards the end through Benja Martinez, but Mariano Diaz nodded in a late seventh as Madrid take what should be an unassailable lead into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on November 30.Cultural managed to keep their illustrious visitors at bay for all of six minutes.

The breakthrough came in fortuitous circumstances, though, as Toni Kroos' right-wing free-kick was headed on by James Rodriguez and Zuiverloon deflected the ball beyond his own goalkeeper.

Madrid almost had a second shortly after, but this time Jorge Palatsi was able to rescue the home side, palming away Isco's diving header.

Cultural's already remote hopes suffered a blow in the 19th minute, as their captain and former Madrid academy player Antonio Martinez was forced off with an injury. But they pressed on and almost levelled soon after, as Toni Suarez raced on to Julen Colinas' clever flick and forced Kiko Casilla into a smart stop.

Real made the most of that let-off and grabbed a second in the 32nd minute – Asensio collecting Lucas Vazquez's low pass and playing a disguised effort into the bottom-right corner.

Madrid remained the dominant force, but Referee Daniel Trujillo spared Cultural an even tougher task nine minutes before the break, as he refused to send Yeray Gonzalez off for appearing to headbutt Kroos during an altercation.

Morata added a third within a minute of the second half starting, as he latched on to a wayward pass from a defender, charged into the left side of the area and coolly slotted through the goalkeeper's legs.

That proved to be the start of a Madrid onslaught, as they netted another two goals by the 55th minute – Asensio driving in from 25 yards, before Morata turned in a deflected right-wing cross with a neat finish inside the area.

The sixth arrived halfway through the second period, Nacho latching onto James' inviting lofted pass on the edge of the area before finding the top-left corner with a remarkable scissor-kick.

Cultural did at least give the home fans a reason to cheer, as Benja smashed in following a cutback with six minutes to go, but Madrid grabbed another at the death – Mariano heading in a right-wing cross.

:love:Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City: Mata strikes to down Pep's men in derby

    hd-juan-mata-manchester-united-manchester-city-26102016_o49pk7z3q1lp1xuwd7n36ei2v.jpg

Juan Mata scored the winner as Manchester United bounced back from their humiliating defeat at Chelsea with a 1-0 derby victory over Manchester City in the EFL Cup fourth round, extending their local rivals' winless run to six matches.

This was a tie between two managers in need of a reassuring win – Jose Mourinho after the embarrassment of a 4-0 defeat on his return to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and Pep Guardiola amidst what is now the longest barren spell of his coaching career.

A much-changed City side started strongly but were unable to make the breakthrough, allowing United to find a way back into the match.

After finishing the first half strongly at Old Trafford, the hosts made a flying start to the second, hitting the post through Paul Pogba before Mata netted the winner. The victory sees United into the quarter-finals and lands a satisfying blow for Mourinho and the red half of Manchester on Guardiola and outgoing EFL Cup champions City.

Guardiola made nine changes to the side that drew at home to Southampton on Sunday and it was Kelechi Iheanacho – in for Sergio Aguero – who got the first sight of goal in the second minute.

The Nigerian striker headed over from close range after getting on the end of an inviting Jesus Navas cross, and City continued to probe a United defence that lacked the injured Eric Bailly, seeing claims for a penalty waved away when the legs of Aleix Garcia and Michael Carrick tangled in the box.

Claudio Bravo's well-publicised lapses in recent matches may have given Willy Caballero hope that he could unseat the City number one with a strong performance at Old Trafford, but neither he nor David De Gea in the opposite net were given too much to do in a first half that ended without either side having registered a shot on target.

City looked the more likely to break the deadlock for much of the opening period, but it was United who finished the stronger, although Zlatan Ibrahimovic sent a promising free-kick straight into the wall before having another effort from the edge of the box deflected over.

Vincent Kompany, who only returned from long-term injury at the weekend, did not emerge for the second half – replaced by Aleksandar Kolarov – and it took United just a few minutes to find a gap in the adjusted City back line.Played through on goal by Ibrahimovic, Pogba's strike was brilliantly tipped onto the left-hand post by an alert Caballero.

United had their tails up and got the goal their early second-half pressure merited in the 54th minute, when Ibrahimovic's squared pass was side-footed home by Mata – the goal allowed to stand despite a coming together between Ander Herrera and Fernando in the box.

City continued to struggle to carve out clear-cut opportunities and United came close to a second when Ibrahimovic just failed to connect with a well-placed Marcus Rashford cross.

The late introduction of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling failed to reap any reward for Guardiola, who cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as hope of an equaliser faded.

Inter 2-1 Torino: Icardi at the double for Inter

    mauro-icardi-internazionale-11092016_4rniloff9p4g1af2jz2gdkp5b.jpg

Mauro Icardi struck twice, including an 88th-minute winner, as Inter secured a much-needed 2-1 victory over in-form Torino at San Siro. The success ended a run of three consecutive Serie A defeats for mid-table Inter and came as a welcome boost following speculation De Boer's position was coming under scrutiny.

Home skipper Icardi knew little about his first goal as the ball ricocheted into the net off his knee after Torino goalkeeper Joe Hart attempted to block Ever Banega's pass into the box.

A defensive mix-up then gifted Torino a second-half equaliser, with Andrea Belotti netting his sixth goal of the season, but just as Inter looked set to be denied a deserved victory, Icardi struck again in the final minutes.

And if his first goal was a touch fortunate, his second was magnificent, the 23-year-old turning just inside the box and rifling an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

The goals were Icardi's first for over a month and marked a welcome return to form for the Argentinian, who has recently been embroiled in a bitter dispute with a section of the club's support.Torino, in contrast, had travelled to the San Siro in confident mood having gone six matches unbeaten.

But despite heading into the game as Serie A's second-highest scorers behind Roma, Sinisa Mihajlovic's men struggled to function as an attacking force and rarely tested Samir Handanovic in the home goal. The defeat could have been far more emphatic with Eder, Marcelo Brozovic and Banega all wasting great opportunities for Inter.

Inter began brightly, with Joao Mario and Antonio Candreva going close, before the breakthrough that Inter's pressure warranted finally arrived after 35 minutes, albeit in slightly fortuitous circumstances.

As Hart came sliding out to try and intercept a clever pass slipped into the box by Banega, he only succeeded in parrying the ball onto the knee of the onrushing Icardi and was then left helpless as it flew back over him and into the unguarded net.Brozovic wasted a great chance in the 62nd minute, firing straight at Hart having been played in by Icardi and then heading the loose ball over the bar.

And Inter were made to pay for their profligacy within a minute as Belotti took advantage of Miranda and Jeison Murillo getting themselves in a tangle to burst clear on goal and rattle a ferocious shot past Handanovic. The end-to-end action duly continued as moments later Brozovic missed the simplest of chances.

Candreva and Icardi combined to create the opportunity, but just two yards out and with the goal gaping, the Croatian midfielder somehow allowed his header to be blocked on the line. But the home side were not to be denied as their top scorer Icardi finally sealed the win with his stunning late strike.

    Key Opta stats:

    - Mauro Icardi found the net tonight after a six-game goal scoring drought for Inter in all competitions.

    - Both Andrea Belotti's two away goals in this Serie A have come at San Siro (one vs AC Milan, the other tonight vs Inter).

    - Inter fired 22 shots tonight, their joint-best tally in a Serie A game this season.

Juventus 4-1 Sampdoria: Champions bounce back in style

    juventus-celebrating-vs-sampdoria-serie-a_m7p7346h6ovo1ffz794bwy8dw.jpg

The Serie A champions went down 1-0 at San Siro on Saturday, but were back to somewhere near their best on Wednesday, roaring into a two-goal lead inside the opening nine minutes.

Mario Mandzukic opened the scoring with a header for his first goal of the season and shortly afterwards Giorgio Chiellini nodded in from a corner.

That early quick-fire double may have had Samp fans fearing a repeat of last season's 5-0 drubbing on the same ground, but the visitors – struggling in the lower reaches of the table – pulled one back after the break through Patrik Schick, following Chiellini's error.

Any hopes of a comeback were soon dashed, however, as Miralem Pjanic added a scruffy third midway through the second period and Chiellini completed an eventful outing with his second to ensure Juve's advantage over Roma at the summit remains at two points.

Claudio Marchisio, on his first appearance since a serious knee injury suffered in April, managed 72 minutes on his return, although there was concern when Patrice Evra was forced off with what appeared to be a calf injury late in the first half.Mandzukic was restored to the starting line-up as one of six changes from that defeat to Milan and Massimiliano Allegri's decision yielded swift reward.

Juan Cuadrado skipped away from his man down the right in the fourth minute and whipped in a devilish cross which Mandzukic met with a simple free header from close range.

The lead was doubled five minutes later as Pjanic swung over a corner and Chiellini rose highest to power a header past Christian Puggioni from six yards.

Juve continued to look a threat whenever they came forward and neat interplay between Pjanic, Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain resulted in the latter firing into the side-netting just prior to the half-hour mark.

Samp finally awoke from their slumber and Jacopo Sala brought a fine low save out of Neto – starting in place of the rested Gianluigi Buffon – but the Brazilian was beaten 12 minutes after the restart.Chiellini was at fault, presenting the ball to Dennis Praet, who strode forward into the area and cut the ball back for Schick to sweep home first time with his left foot.

But Juve's two-goal lead was restored within eight minutes as a scramble inside the Samp area eventually saw the ball fall kindly for Pjanic, who thumped home through a narrow gap at the near post.

Higuain, who endured a frustrating evening, was thwarted by Puggioni with 15 minutes remaining and the Argentina star will hope for better fortunes against his former club Napoli on Saturday.

With three minutes left on the clock Chiellini showed his team-mate how it is done – although the defender could hardly miss a free header from six yards following another excellent Cuadrado delivery.

    Key Opta stats:

    - Juventus have conceded a goal in three Serie A games in a row, the first time since November.

    - Mario Mandzukic has scored after 10 Serie A games without a goal (April 24 against Fiorentina).

    - Mandzukic has scored after 763 minutes played without goals with Juventus (all competitions).

    - Prior to today Giorgio Chiellini's last Serie A goal was back in May against Sampdoria – his last Serie A brace was back in April 2008.

:cool:EFL Cup quarter-final draw: Man Utd to face West Ham, Arsenal host Southampton

    hd-juan-mata-manchester-united-manchester-city-26102016_o49pk7z3q1lp1xuwd7n36ei2v.jpg

Manchester United's reward for beating city rivals City is an EFL Cup quarter-final match against West Ham.Arsenal will play host to Southampton, while Liverpool host Leeds United and Newcastle go to Hull.

The last time the Red Devils played the Hammers in cup competition, it was in the FA Cup last season. It took a replay for Louis van Gaal's side to come through on that occasion, yet it paved the way to their success in the FA Cup.

However, West Ham's last League Cup meeting with the Old Trafford club ended emphatically in their favour, with a 4-0 win in 2010-11.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have lost their last three home League Cup ties against Premier League opponents - including a 2-1 reverse against Saints two years ago.

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Berlin Union (pens: 3-0): Gotze strikes winning spot-kick

    dortmund_1714yi2188fmp1nwqyq66ec4l0.jpg

Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller spared Borussia Dortmund's blushes with a pair of shootout saves to help them progress to the third round of DFB-Pokal after a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin.

Weidenfeller expertly saved Union's first two penalties before Philipp Hosiner struck the crossbar to give Dortmund a 3-0 spot-kick triumph following a gruelling 120-minute encounter with their in-form second-tier opponents.

A first-half own goal by Michael Parensen looked set to be enough to see the hosts advance, before Steven Skrzybski scored a sensational equaliser for Union with 10 minutes of normal time to play and forced Weidenfeller to be the hero.

Thomas Tuchel handed starts to several fringe players as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Christian Pulisic and Marc Bartra joined a lengthy injury list already containing the likes of Marco Reus and Andre Schurrle, and extra time is the last thing his depleted squad needed.Union are second in 2.Bundesliga, having won six of their previous seven, and they matched last season's Pokal finalists for much of the contest.

The visitors could have taken a shock lead in the fourth minute through Kenny Price Redondo, who sprung the Dortmund offside trap, but opted to shoot and dragged wide when striker Collin Quaner was well placed in the box.Adrian Ramos then shot straight at Union goalkeeper Daniel Mesenholer and Mario Gotze had his effort deflected over during a frantic opening 15 minutes.

Union, who looked every bit a side flying high in the second tier, forced Weidenfeller to palm away a fiercely driven cross and dive at the feet of Quaner as they continued to trouble their hosts.

After Gotze and Nuri Sahin forced saved from Mesenholder, the deadlock was eventually broken two minutes before the break when Union's Parensen inadvertently steered a cross from Dortmund debutant Bruun Larsen into his own net with his chest.

Emre Mor blazed over the top in the 50th minute, but Union substitute Hosiner's off-target snapshot demonstrated that the visitors continued to pose an attacking threat of their own. They thought they had the equaliser after 69 minutes via a tap-in from Kristian Pedersen's header across goal, but Dane had drifted offside.

But Union did sensationally draw level in the 80th minute through substitute Skrzybski just moments after entering the field, as he connected on the volley from a half-cleared corner and powered the ball past a despairing Weidenfeller into the bottom corner.

Mor fired against the post in the dying stages, but the tie went to extra time.Mesenholer produced a brilliant double save from a Matthias Ginter header and Ousmane Dembele's follow-up three minutes into the additional half hour.

Union missed a glorious chance to prevent the game going to penalties midway through the first extra pariod as Hosiner took advantage of a misjudged Weidenfeller clearance and rounded the keeper, before dithering on the ball and failing to convert into an open goal as Dortmund recovered and the game went to penalties.

Dembele, Ginter and Gotze all converted as Weidenfeller performed his heroics to deny Felix Kroos and Stephan Furstner, with Hosiner striking the woodwork as Dortmund survived a major scare.
