Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal: Sub Giroud fires Gunners to victory

    hd-olivier-giroud-sunderland-arsenal-premier-league_2ehy3zjnqaqj1bpem5soh4n2p.jpg

Substitute Olivier Giroud's first two goals of the season - from his first two touches of the match - secured a 4-1 win for Arsenal in Saturday's Premier League visit to Sunderland.

The France international, whose last goals came when he hit a hat-trick against Aston Villa on the final day of last season, turned in Kieran Gibbs' cross 19 minutes from time before glancing in a corner to seal a fourth away league win in a row for the Gunners.

Alexis Sanchez had put Arsenal ahead with a fine first-half header, and Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were both guilty of missing one-on-one chances to double that advantage.

Sunderland, who came into the match without a league win under David Moyes, grabbed an equaliser after 65 minutes when Jermain Defoe converted from the penalty spot following a Petr Cech foul.

Giroud, who made his return from injury against Reading in the EFL Cup in midweek, put Arsenal back in front two minutes after coming on before netting a second just five minutes later to take his tally to seven goals in seven games against Sunderland.

Sanchez added a fourth with 12 minutes to play to resounding boos from the home fans who began to file out of the Stadium of Light, as the visiting faithful celebrated a win that puts Arsenal temporarily three points clear at the top of the table.

Arsenal started the better of the teams and Jordan Pickford twice rescued his side following slack defending, denying Ozil from close range before blocking at the feet of the charging Francis Coquelin. But Pickford could do nothing to stop Sanchez giving Arsenal the lead on 19 minutes as the home side's poor concentration was punished.

Oxlade-Chamberlain burst past Duncan Watmore down the right and curled a cross towards the penalty spot, and Sanchez raced in front of the static Lamine Kone to steer a fine header into the far corner.

Defoe was denied an equaliser when Wahbi Khazri was flagged offside before cutting back for the striker to turn home, though Alex Iwobi then almost doubled the lead with a dipping effort from 20 yards.

Pickford did well to snatch an Ozil lob from the air, but Sunderland's task became even tougher when captain John O'Shea - making his 350th Premier League start - was forced off with a hamstring injury just before half-time.Oxlade-Chamberlain dragged a poor shot wide on the break for the Gunners, but Sunderland started the second half with greater resolve.

Sanchez felt aggrieved not to win a penalty when he went to ground easily after tumbling under pressure from Kone, and just minutes later, Sunderland found themselves level.

Shkodran Mustafi misjudged a bouncing ball to allow Watmore to drive into the penalty area, and after the onrushing Cech tripped the 22-year-old with his head, Defoe swept high into the net from the spot with Sunderland's first shot on target.

Arsene Wenger responded by introducing Giroud, and the 30-year-old wasted little time in making an impact, steering a low left-footed finish beyond Pickford after Gibbs' clever cross from the left.

Giroud glanced Ozil's corner up and over Pickford into the far corner five minutes later, before Sanchez added gloss to the scoreline as he collected a rebound from the returning Aaron Ramsey before turning around Pickford and slotting home.

Barcelona considering January move for Cuadrado

    juan-cuadrado-lyon-juventus-champions-league_tgzma0ae8el51mdp15j8bzpca.jpg

At some point during the next transfer window, it’s likely that Juan Cuadrado will have to a decision to make; does he want to join Barcelona but, in doing so, give up the position he prefers to play?

Is there really a chance that the Colombian could join the Catalan club? Well, there is certainly interest in him from Barca, but for him to end up moving from Juventus, the player would have to make certain sacrifices.

It seems certain now that Aleix Vidal no longer has a future at Barcelona. Having trained without a problem, the full-back claimed to be suffering from muscular issues ahead of the Catalan Super Cup match last Tuesday, a friendly against Espanyol that featured mainly reserve and youth players. Having failed to make the matchday squad for eight consecutive games - even with Sergi Roberto out through injury – he ruled himself out of that game. As a result he has now been totally discarded by the coaching staff and will not be considered again, although officially he’s ‘injured’.

As a result, Barca now have no natural right-back to call upon. Sergi Roberto is a midfielder and, although he has performed well in the role, the club need a plan B.Despite his situation, the Catalans would still prefer not to sell Vidal in the January transfer market until they secure a replacement.

In terms of alternatives, the one Barca really want is Arsenal's Hector Bellerin. Of course, there is no chance of getting him in January and if they were to try next summer he would be extremely expensive.

Cuadrado is a player they have liked for years, although the two sides have never been united. On the one hand, the South American prefers to operate as a winger, while Barca would like to use him as an attacking full-back.

In addition, his expensive price tag has always prevented a move. Last summer, knowing that they had to strengthen both full-back positions, Barca ultimately decided to bring in a left-back and paid €16 million for Lucas Digne. There was no more money to bring in someone on the right, given the urgent need for reinforcements in central defence, midfield and up front.

It seems that the only way a move for Cuadrado will materialise is if the player accepts the role of right-back and pressures Juventus into letting him go – something that will only happen if he’s not playing regularly. Even then, Barca would not be willing to pay more than €20 million for the former Fiorentina man, who is on a three-year loan deal with Juventus.

Sunderland suffer worst-ever start to a Premier League season

    david-moyes-sunderland_1sd8lkxc8fdi61cxdtbk315ouq.jpg

It’s official. Following their 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal in Saturday’s early game, Sunderland have now endured the worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

After falling behind to an Alexis Sanchez strike, the Black Cats did draw level against the Gunners courtesy of a second-half Jermain Defoe penalty. But further goals from Olivier Giroud (two) and Sanchez condemned David Moyes’ side to their eighth league defeat of the campaign.

It leaves Sunderland rooted to the foot of the table with just two points and only Manchester City in the 1995/96 season have ever made such a poor start. But, when goal difference is taken into account, Sunderland's record is worse than City's at the same stage of the season.

Already under pressure, the latest setback will only further undermine the position of Moyes with his team now overwhelming favourites to be relegated this term.

Ronaldo reaches 350 career league goals

    cristiano-ronaldo-alaves-real-madrid-laliga-29102016_lpo06psnw0gc1otgf63zxh08i.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo was among the goals again for Real Madrid on Saturday, with his 17th-minute penalty away at Alaves taking him to another notable career milestone.

A phenomenal strike rate throughout his club career means he is fast closing in on 500 goals in all competitions after scoring a hat-trick in the 4-1 victory.

He has, however, already reached the 350-goal mark in league competition – with those efforts spread across spells with Sporting CP, Manchester United and Madrid.Ronaldo netted three times in his native Portugal, before six seasons at Old Trafford delivered 84 Premier League efforts.

Another 263 have been added in La Liga, including two in the first half against Alaves, with that remarkable return coming in just 243 games.

His spot-kick against Alaves also means that the 31-year-old has netted against every Spanish top-flight opponent he has faced, while he netted again on 33 minutes before completing his hat-trick with two minutes left.

Manchester United's Mourinho sent to stands after clash with referee

    jose-mourinho_1dlk9jake37xo1v5kexy8ve70q.jpg

Jose Mourinho has been expelled to the stands in Manchester United's clash with Burnley on Saturday.

With the scores level at 0-0 at the halfway point, the Portuguese coach was sent to the stands after an altercation with the fourth official.

Mourinho was furious with Matteo Darmian not being given a penalty, despite replays suggesting it was a blatant dive inside the Burnley box by the Italian full-back.

Although there was no indication of his expulsion at the end of the first 45 minutes, Mark Clattenburg sent the Portuguese coach up into the Old Trafford stands at the start of the second period.

He appeared to tell director Ed Woodward that he had asked Clattenburg to call for a foul, leading to his sending off.

Mourinho sat next to injured Eric Bailly as his team sought a Premier League win to bounce back from last weekend's 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea.
