Moyes gets one-match touchline ban for misconduct

    davidmoyes-cropped_18zxcw8us3bet1otkjmgtojpn6.jpg

Sunderland manager David Moyes has been handed a one-match touchline ban by the Football Association (FA) after admitting to a misconduct charge.

Moyes was sent to the stands in the closing stages of the 1-0 EFL Cup defeat to Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on October 26.

The FA subsequently charged the Scot with directing "abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official".Moyes admitted the charge and has also been fined £8,000.

As a result, the former Manchester United and Real Sociedad boss will not be in the dugout when rock-bottom Sunderland go in search of a first win of the Premier League season at Bournemouth on Saturday. However, he will return for the crunch clash with fellow strugglers Hull City at the Stadium of Light on November 19.

Ferdinand tells Mourinho: Start playing Mkhitaryan!

    henrikh-mkhitaryan-manchester-united_dhxvxwsxxdzyzjcibpfhqlqh.jpg

Rio Ferdinand is struggling to understand why Henrikh Mkhitaryan is not featuring for Manchester United, joking: "I would actually like to see him play football!"

Mkhitaryan was one of Jose Mourinho's big summer signings, arriving from Borussia Dortmund, but hasn't made a single start since the derby defeat to Manchester City on September 10.

Mourinho has claimed that the Armenian is fully fit and operating at "100 per cent" in training but he continues to be left out, much to the bemusement of former defender Ferdinand. He told the London Evening Standard: "I don’t know what’s happened to Mkhitaryan. Does anyone know where he is?

"By all accounts he is fit and training well but you don’t see him in a Manchester United shirt.

"They paid Borussia Dortmund £26 million to get him in the summer and for that money, I would actually like to see him play football!"

Besiktas 1-1 Napoli: Hamsik stunner rescues Italians

    ricardo-quaresma-besiktas-napoli-ucl-11012016_dsady42tqqgd1mvzvfxq14mo6.jpg

Marek Hamsik's brilliant late goal earned Napoli a 1-1 draw with Besiktas in the Champions League on Tuesday.

A late Vincent Aboubakar goal had given the Turkish side a 3-2 win at the Stadio San Paolo in the reverse fixture two weeks ago.

Neither side could find the same goalscoring touch this time around and the game looked to be heading for a dour stalemate until a contentious decision saw Besiktas awarded a penalty in the 77th minute.Nikola Maksimovic was ruled to have handled in the area by referee Mark Clattenburg and Ricardo Quaresma duly converted the resulting spot-kick.

However, Besiktas' lead lasted just four minutes as Hamsik levelled matters in stunning fashion with a sublime long-range curling effort. The result means Napoli stay a point clear of Besiktas at the summit, though Benfica could move level on points with the Serie A side with victory over Dynamo Kiev.

Napoli could have broken the deadlock inside the first minute had Manolo Gabbiadini not shot straight at Fabri after meeting Faouzi Ghoulam's dangerous left-wing cross.

The visitors had the better of the early stages and Gabbiadini again forced Fabri into action as he chested down a clever ball from Allan and fired towards goal, only to be denied by a fine save with his legs from the Besiktas goalkeeper.

Besiktas suffered a blow midway through the first half when Dusko Tosic, operating as a makeshift left-back, was withdrawn through injury and replaced by Cenk Tosun.

But they should have taken the lead just before the half-hour mark as Atiba Hutchinson rattled the outside of the left-hand post with a volley following Kalidou Koulibaly's dreadful attempt at a headed clearance.

As in the first half, Napoli began the second 45 minutes brightly, with Jose Callejon spurning a huge opportunity when he sent a lofted finish wide after being played in by Lorenzo Insigne.Insigne then side-footed over at the end of a well-worked move from Maurizio Sarri's side in what served as a rare moment of quality in the second half.

Napoli were made to pay for their profligacy when Clattenburg decided to point to the spot after Aboubakar's cross stuck Maksimovic on the elbow, with Quaresma dispatching his 78th-minute spot-kick into the bottom-left corner.

Yet Besiktas' joy was short-lived as Hamsik spectacularly sealed a share of the spoils, earning what could be a crucial point with his superb strike from distance.
It could have been even better for Napoli, but Insigne's curling injury-time effort flew narrowly wide.

Manchester City 3-1 Barcelona: Gundogan double sinks Barca

    gundogan-barcelona_yesun98299561kijceeksoyiz.jpg

Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Manchester City came from behind to claim Champions League revenge over Barcelona and pull within two points of the Group C leaders with a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

A 4-0 defeat for City at Camp Nou a fortnight ago highlighted what many believed to be a gulf in quality between Pep Guardiola’s past and present clubs.

But the home side were good value for their victory on home soil and their high-tempo, high-pressing approach to the second half reaped its rewards.Lionel Messi had given Barcelona the lead on the counter-attack after City were denied a penalty for a Samuel Umtiti challenge on Raheem Sterling.

Gundogan’s leveller came somewhat against the run of play prior to the interval, but it sparked an upturn for City, who grew in belief as the match went on.Kevin De Bruyne’s 51st-minute set-piece fooled Marc-Andre ter Stegen to move City in front, before Gundogan wrapped up a first victory over the Catalan giants in six attempts 16 minutes from time.Barca, who remain top of the group, must now wait to book their place in the last 16.

Sergio Aguero, back in City’s Champions League starting XI having been limited to a substitute appearance in the reverse fixture, was sent clean through on goal only to be halted by a tardy linesman’s flag early on.

That decision was vindicated by replays which showed the Argentine had indeed strayed beyond the last defender, but referee Viktor Kassai was soon the target of a more vitriolic chorus from the home fans.

Sterling went to ground under minimal contact as he tried to find a way beyond Umtiti just inside the Barca box, but it was the England winger – deemed to have dived by Kassai – who saw yellow.Barca’s goal threat had been limited before they took the lead in a move that started with a City free-kick after 21 minutes.

An Aguero shot was blocked and fell kindly for Messi, who spread the ball wide for Neymar to venture forward down the left flank.

Messi matched his attacking colleague’s run and was on hand to collect a squared ball on the edge of the box, taking two touches before slotting beyond goalkeeper Willy Caballero for his 16th goal in 14 Champions League fixtures against English opposition.

Gundogan’s ambitious strike from long distance after 24 minutes – punched clear by Marc-Andre ter Stegen - represented City’s first shot on target and it was the Germany international who netted the hosts’ equaliser against the run of play.

With Barca enjoying an increasingly healthy share of possession as the half progressed, a loose Sergi Roberto pass eventually found its way to Sterling, whose ball across the face of goal teed up Gundogan for a simple finish.Roberto was at fault again when Fernandinho was presented with a chance that crept just wide of the right-hand upright.

Sterling’s first touch let him down when he received the ball in a promising position as City started the second half brightly, but a clumsy Sergio Busquets challenge on David Silva less than 25 yards out gifted De Bruyne an opportunity to put the hosts in front.Ter Stegen took a step in the wrong direction to leave himself off balance and with too much to do as the Belgian’s curling free-kick flew into the top-right corner.

Guardiola’s men continued to press, Aguero heading just wide from a David Silva delivery before De Bruyne came agonisingly close to connecting with a low Aleksandar Kolarov cross.City still had to be careful at the back, though, and Andre Gomes rattled the crossbar when he had more time to consider his shot.

Gundogan gave City the breathing space their second-half performance deserved when he hammered into an open net from a Jesus Navas cut-back, although the ball appeared to deflect off the hand of Aguero on its way through.

And the hosts held on for the victory - a memorable result that extends their unbeaten home run in the competition to a club-record seven matches, while announcing Guardiola's City as genuine European contenders.

Ludogorets 2-3 Arsenal: Ozil completes stunning comeback to clinch qualification

    hd-olivier-giroud-arsenal_1a3tv6q4i9ghn11815wgtkx1xu.jpg

Arsenal fought back from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 away at Ludogorets courtesy of Mesut Ozil's 87th-minute effort and secure a place in the knockout stage of the Champions League for a 17th successive season.

The Premier League side made heavy weather of securing victory in Sofia against opponents they had crushed 6-0 at the Emirates Stadium less than a fortnight ago, a game in which Ozil netted a hat-trick.

Still, the positive result sees them through to the last 16 from Group A and the late winner means Arsene Wenger's men are top ahead of Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference, with the two teams going head-to-head at the Emirates on November 23.

Jonathan Cafu put the hosts - who had scored 13 goals in three games since the heavy loss in the English capital - ahead before setting up his team's second, scored by Claudiu Keseru.Yet Ludogorets' lead did not even survive until the half-time whistle as Arsenal scored twice from crosses to get back on level terms by the break.

A low ball in from the left allowed Granit Xhaka to sweep home, while Aaron Ramsey's drifting cross from the opposite flank allowed Olivier Giroud to mark his first start of the season with the equaliser. The game looked set to end all square until Ozil grabbed a dramatic winner, the German keeping his cool when through on goal with three minutes left.

Arsenal's 14-match unbeaten run had looked in serious danger when they conceded twice in the opening quarter of an hour at the Vasil Levski Stadium.

Cafu won the battle to reach a deep free-kick from fellow Brazilian Wanderson and volley in the opening goal after 12 minutes, giving Ludogorets the lead for the third time in four Champions League outings this season.

The scorer then turned provider just three minutes later, twisting his way past Kieran Gibbs on the home side's right flank to fire over a low cross that Keseru turned in at the front post. However, just like against PSG and Basel earlier in the competition, Ludogorets were again unable to hold onto a lead.

Crucially, Arsenal halved the deficit in a hurry. Just five minutes after conceding for a second time, Xhaka arrived in the penalty area at the perfect time to turn home Ozil's cross from the byline, cutting the deficit in half.

The rather inevitable equaliser eventually arrived three minutes before the break, as Ramsey's floated cross allowed Giroud to flick a header over stranded goalkeeper Milan Borjan. But, having worked so hard to get back on level terms, Arsenal failed to fire in a scratchy second half.

Only David Ospina's desperate block on Wanderson denied Ludogorets from going ahead again, the goalkeeper racing out to spare the blushes of a defensive line caught square by one simple ball over the top.

While the Brazilian fluffed his opportunity at one end, Ozil made no mistake at the other. Mohamed Elneny's pass put the German in the clear and, after lifting the ball over the advancing Borjan, he coolly waited for two defenders to dive in before rolling the ball into an unguarded net.

PSV 1-2 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski hits double in Bayern win

    hd-robert-lewandowski_14xpgadx2pbd21p4fu842vjtjl.jpg

Bayern Munich qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League after a Robert Lewandowski double helped them come from behind to beat PSV 2-1.A spot-kick and a smart finish from the Bayern striker in the second half cancelled out a controversial Santiago Arias opener for PSV in the first half.

Atletico Madrid's victory over Rostov secures progression for the Bundesliga champions from Group D, who have now gone past this stage for 14 consecutive seasons.

PSV cannot progress in this season's competition despite having led for a portion of the first half and defended resolutely, their hopes ended by Lewandowski's 73rd minute winner.

Bayern wasted opportunities to put the game out of sight, with Thomas Muller and Lewandowski both denied as they looked to add gloss to their victory.Bayern trail group leaders Atletico by three points, and will travel to Rostov next as they battle out for top spot in the remaining two matches.

Carlo Ancelotti's side beat PSV 4-1 when the two sides met in Munich a fortnight ago, and they raced out of the blocks, eager to pick up where they left off, almost opening the scoring twice inside the first five minutes.First Muller steered a cross just wide, then Lewandowski cannoned a header off the crossbar and diverted the rebound just over.

But the hosts weathered the early storm and took a controversial 14th-minute lead as Arias' close-range header was allowed to stand despite the full-back being a yard offside when he fired past Manuel Neuer after Davy Propper's effort had been saved. The visitors were frustrated further on the half hour when Lewandowski felt he was held by Hector Moreno as he headed an Arjen Robben corner against the post.

The Polish international did finally get his goal five minutes later from the penalty spot, Lewandowski coolly sending Remko Pasveer the wrong way after Andres Guardado was deemed to have handled in the area.Arturo Vidal and David Alaba both went close either side of the break but found Pasveer in fine form to keep them at bay.

A heroic goal line clearance by Moreno on the hour kept PSV in the contest, sliding to prevent Muller converting after Pasveer's parry from Vidal had left the German international with an unattended goal.

Philipp Lahm skied over as the ball ran to him in the area on 70 minutes, and Muller flashed a header wide as Bayern frustration grew against a well-organised PSV defence.

But Lewandowski did find the second, and ultimately winner, three minutes later as he found space to meet an Alaba cross into the box and finish calmly beyond Pasveer, to give Bayern the victory and seal qualification. He almost capped off a fantastic individual performance and his hat-trick with five minutes to play following a delightful piece of the skill in the area to evade his marker, but his shot rebounded off the underside of the bar.

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Rostov: Griezmann double sends Simeone's men through

    atletico-vs-rostov_1p6ao66d2un7o1upwjeuqzxac5.jpg

Atletico Madrid booked their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League as Antoine Griezmann's last-gasp goal secured a 2-1 win over Rostov at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday.

Diego Simeone's men had won all three of their previous Group D fixtures and knew that a fourth victory would secure one of the top two spots in the pool with two matches to spare. The home side looked impressive once they hit their stride and Antoine Griezmann's fine improvised opener was just rewards for their play.

However, Rostov soon hit back and Sardar Azmoun became the first player to score against last season's runners-up in this year's Champions League to make it 1-1.

Diego Godin, Fernando Torres and Filipe Luis all wasted good chances as Atleti sought a winner, but in the second half Rostov appeared impenetrable at the back and their approach looked destined to yield a commendable point.

But a clever Griezmann finish deep into stoppage time gave Atleti the win to take them to a maximum 12 points from four matches, while Bayern Munich's 2-1 win over PSV in Eindhoven also sees them reach the last 16.
Atleti were ponderous in the early stages and Christian Noboa sent a stinging 25-yard volley into the hands of a relieved Jan Oblak after Stefan Savic botched his clearance in the 15th minute.

That seemingly sparked Atleti into life and Griezmann darted in from the right on the break before slipping a pass through for Yannick Carrasco, who was denied by Timofei Kalachev's last-ditch block. And Atleti went ahead in the 28th minute. Carrasco's lofted pass deflected towards Griezmann, who beat Soslan Dzhanaev with a sublime acrobatic effort.

Their joy was short-lived, though, as Rostov hit back two minutes later. Dmitri Poloz's throughball found Azmoun on the right of the area and he coolly slotted into the bottom-left corner.Fernando Torres should have restored Atletico's lead just before the break, but he could not make a proper connection with Sime Vrsaljko's cross.

Atleti continued to put Rostov under unrelenting pressure after the break and Vrsaljko's driven cross in the 54th minute caused problems, but Torres' eventual head went well wide.

Rostov showed little desire to go in search of a win as they sat back and absorbed pressure, and a frustrated Atleti resorted to long-range efforts as the full-time whistle approached. But just when it looked like the scores would stay level Griezmann popped up with a dramatic injury-time winner.

The forward latched onto a punt into the area to loft his effort over Dzhanaev, and Rostov's furious protests for offside fell on deaf ears as the ball had come off the head of their own defender Alexandru Gatcan.

Basel 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Late Meunier strike sends Emery's men through

    hd-basel-psg_pidro0hzru5c1k526tvxtsnf3.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with two matches to spare as they beat 10-man Basel 2-1 thanks to Thomas Meunier's stunning late volley.

The French champions are six points behind leaders Nice in Ligue 1, but a third consecutive European win - courtesy of goals from Blaise Matuidi and Meunier - ensured a top-two spot in Group A.

PSG overcame a stern Basel test to ultimately triumph 3-0 at the Parc des Princes in their last group game, and it was a similar story at St Jakob-Park as the hosts troubled Unai Emery's men throughout.

However, Matuidi nudged his side in front shortly before half-time, and, although Alphonse Areola's error allowed Luca Zuffi to equalise, Meunier struck the decisive blow.

Thiago Silva was withdrawn with an apparent head injury for PSG, but Serey Die's red card for two bookings in seven second-half minutes hindered Basel's chances.

Arsenal's recovery to win 3-2 at Ludogorets, combined with this result, sent the hosts out, with PSG instead progressing through to the knockout stages for a fifth consecutive season.

While the visitors bossed the early possession, the first chance fell Basel's way as Matias Delgado slammed a low drive straight at PSG goalkeeper Areola from an Omar Gaber cross.A better opening was to come at the other end, but Edinson Cavani wastefully lifted his finish over the bar after Marco Verratti's pass sent him clear.

Verratti fired an effort of his own inches away from the top corner, before Renato Steffen looped a header onto the roof of the net for the hosts, who looked to end the first half on top as the same man lashed wide from a half-cleared free-kick.
However, PSG conjured up a goal against the run of play two minutes before the interval.

Lucas Moura's corner from the left fell kindly for Meunier to blast back across goal to where Matuidi was waiting to dangle a leg, turning the ball across the line in unorthodox fashion.

Silva did not reappear after the break, having picked up a knock in an earlier collision with Areola, but his side were quickly on top as Tomas Vaclik parried Lucas' volley following a fortunate ricochet in the area.Thiago Motta's speculative header cleared the bar, while Meunier prodded straight at Vaclik with PSG attacking relentlessly.

Lucas slipped in Cavani in a swift counter, but Gaber blocked the subsequent shot, and Layvin Kurzawa nodded wide from the corner that followed.

Angel Di Maria then forced an error inside the Basel box, but he scuffed into the keeper's grateful arms after taking a return pass from Verratti.Motta missed another header from close range, and that looked like it would prove costly as Areola's error allowed the hosts back into the game.

There appeared little danger as Zuffi swung over a deep cross from the right, but, with the goalkeeper straying from his line, the ball carried over his head and into the net.

Vaclik beat away Lucas' free-kick as PSG rallied, and Die - energetic throughout - was then dismissed for a needless stamp on Verratti.Marc Janko could still have won it for Basel, but failed to turn Zuffi's centre towards the target.

And in the final minute of normal time, Adrien Rabiot set up Meunier to spectacularly volley home the winner from 25 yards to win it for Emery's men.

Simeone: I made bad decisions in Rostov win

    simeone-cropped_nkv0tgesyd2j1icxziwo7x9m4.jpg

Diego Simeone acknowledged that he got his tactics wrong against Rostov but thanked his players for securing a 2-1 win to send Atletico Madrid through to the Champions League knockouts.

After a ponderous start in Madrid, Atletico took the lead thanks to a marvellous improvised effort from Antoine Griezmann in the 28th minute.

Sardar Azmoun hit back for Rostov soon after but Griezmann struck again deep into stoppage time to clinch a fourth successive Champions League triumph for Simeone's side.

"As the coach I made bad decisions," the head coach told reporters."I also had bad solutions at different times of the match and I'm hurt by that, very hurt. But fortunately the players knew how to solve the problems."Qualifying fills me with pride as an athlete, as a player and because the ways we compete with these players."

Griezmann's double ended a four-game run without a goal for Atletico since the 2-0 win at Valencia on October 2 and Simeone was happy to see the end of the drought, though he was also quick to insist the Frenchman's contributions during that period had been more than satisfactory."Today Griezmann found the net and the team thanks him because we need his goals," he added.

"But in recent games that Antoine did not score he was one of the most dangerous players we had."

We've beaten the best team in the world, beams Guardiola

    pepguardiola-cropped_2lcah01j2n76z5838c911c1k.jpg

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola declared his side had beaten "the best team in the world" following their 3-1 Champions League victory over Barcelona.

City were beaten 4-0 at Camp Nou last month but put in a confident second-half performance to clinch three points that draws them within two of Group C leaders Barca.

Lionel Messi fired the visitors in front at the Etihad Stadium, before Ilkay Gundogan equalised as City capitalised on a loose Sergi Roberto pass across the defence.

A bright start to the second period preceded a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick that gave Guardiola's men the lead over the manager's former club, before Gundogan wrapped up the win with his second of the match.

And, while Guardiola conceded his players had endured a difficult start, he praised the attitude of his players after pulling level.

"Our performance 11 against 11 in Barcelona was much better than the first 38 minutes here," he said. "In the first 38 minutes we saw the best team in the world. We were in really big trouble. When Barcelona had the chance to score the second goal the game would have been finished.

"But football is like this, like when Fernandinho slipped and Messi scored in Barcelona."Our goal changed the game. Our players realised the bad moment in the game was over.

"In the second half we were compact, we made good high pressing and won a lot of balls with our high pressing. Also we defended with low blocks and used our counter-attack against them."City ended a six-game winless run with a 4-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday and Guardiola is delighted to see his players moving in the right direction.

"Considering our situation with the short time we've had together, against the best team in the world and our position in the group, our victory is so important," he added.

"We have one more game to win to go into [the next round in] February and I hope in February we will be better. Gladbach's draw [with Celtic] gives us a bit of breathing space.

"We're lucky that if we get through we won't get Barca in the next round."

Aguero: I wasn't angry with Guardiola over Barca benching

    sergio-aguero-pep-guardiola-manchester-city-champions-league-20160914_ar4rdw3mvb3k1enhk2ebxqwxk.jpg

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero believes he is improving as a player under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage this season, and says he was not angry after being left on the bench in Barcelona a fortnight ago.

Aguero was named as a substitute for tactical reasons at Camp Nou but started against the same opposition on Tuesday and played a starring role as City won 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola has often spoke of Aguero’s need to improve in various different areas of his game but praised the striker’s performance against the Catalans as “awesome”.

It had been reported that the forward took exception to the manager's decision to leave him out of the starting line-up at Camp Nou a fortnight ago, but he says he never had any issues.

“No, I’m never angry,” he said. “I respect every manager’s decision. He said it was a tactical thing and I obviously respect that. When I went onto the pitch I tried to give my best and then train hard to be ready for the next game. But no one was in a bad mood.”And Aguero himself was also pleased with his work after Tuesday's victory, and he says he is on the right track.

“Obviously Guardiola always give me tips to improve, what I need to do is go out onto the pitch and try to do better, and I think that we are going the right way, but of course I have a lot of things to learn and every game brings something different,” he said.

Guardiola gave Aguero tactical instructions before the start of the second half, and the striker has revealed exactly what was discussed.

“He said keep playing the same way, that we were fine,” the striker disclosed. "He spoke a bit about pressing and how to do it. We were saying we had to finish our attacks and score a goal, that was the most important thing, and that’s how it turned out, right?”The 28-year-old also gave an insight into how City rattled Barca and restricted their forward trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

“They’re a difficult team, obviously," he said. "If you give them the time and the space to think, they will beat you. We tried to press them when the ball was in midfield, and tried to hit them on the counter to see if we could score. It happened like that, but you always have to respect Barca.

“We had to pretend that it wasn’t Barca and try to play how we know, and win, which was the most important thing.“I don’t know if they were playing badly but we were good, and that’s the main point. We pressed the ball when Neymar and Leo, the most dangerous players, had it.

“Then we tried to press in the centre so they couldn’t do what they usually do with a slight touch and Leo sending the ball to the back post. In the second half he did send the ball a couple of times to Suarez and Neymar but we tried to stop him from doing that.”

:cool:Mourinho hands Mkhitaryan lifeline by including him in Man Utd squad

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could return from his Manchester United exile after being named in Jose Mourinho's squad for the Europa League trip to Fenerbahce.

Mkhitaryan has become a peripheral figure at Old Trafford since joining from Borussia Dortmund during the close season and last featured for the first team in the 2-1 derby loss to Manchester City in September, when he was substituted at half-time.

But the Armenia international is in the travelling party to Istanbul alongside injury plagued defender Phil Jones, who is yet to feature this term.

Anthony Martial is set to feature in attack and Zlatan Ibrahimovic may have the chance to address his recent goal drought, but Chris Smalling is absent once more, with Michael Carrick, Memphis Depay and Antonio Valencia all remaining in Manchester.

Bastian Schweinsteiger enjoyed a thaw in his relations with Mourinho this week as he returned to first-team training but the ex-Germany captain does not travel as he was not named in United's playing squad for the Europa League.

The 20-time English champions are level on six points in Group A with Feyenoord, who beat them 1-0 in September, while Fenerbahce are two points further back following a 4-1 thrashing at Old Trafford last time out.

Neville donates £20,000 to deaf football teams

Former England international and Valencia manager Gary Neville has donated £20,000 to help the Great Britain deaf football teams to compete in the Deaflympics in Turkey in 2017.

With the male and female sides receiving no funding from government or football bodies, they were in danger of missing out unless they could raise a £17,750 deposit before the start of December.

Neville stepped in with a £20,000 donation after replying to a social media call from GB women's captain Claire Stancliffe for the Premier League and the Football Association to make a donation by tweeting: "I will do it if they won't."

Stancliffe told BBC Sport: "For the last nine years since I made my international debut, I've had to fundraise every year just to represent my country, let alone pay for all the training I have to do.

"It does get tiring and sometimes you do feel like just giving up. But there's just something that makes me keep fighting. I can't give up something that has ultimately made me who I am today.

"If I didn't have the opportunity to play with other deaf players, I would be lost. No one can fully understand deafness unless they have been through it themselves."
GB Deaf Football aim to raise £125,000 in total to aid preparations for the Deaflympics, as well as to pay for flights and hotels to compete at the competition.
