Italy 0-0 Germany: San Siro stalemate

    bonucci-gundogan-italy-germany_ogj7qpr4cf2zzt270snd49gy.jpg

Italy and Germany played out a friendly 0-0 draw at San Siro on Tuesday as the Azzurri failed to gain a slight measure of revenge for their Euro 2016 elimination.

Hosts Italy had never lost to the Germans in tournament action before July's penalty-shootout reverse in Bordeaux and Antonio Conte's replacement in the dugout from that encounter, Giampiero Ventura, had made a vow to gain recompense in Milan.

However, his side lacked composure in attack throughout the game, Andrea Belotti hit the post with their clearest chance, and such a toothless performance against a below-strength German side may prompt calls for Mario Balotelli's recall to swell. The in-form Nice man was in attendance at his former stomping ground.
The game was selected as a trial event for FIFA's testing of video assistant referees, with president Gianni Infantino present in the booth, but there was little incident of controversy or goal action for it to be called for.

A denied Italy penalty and Kevin Volland's offside goal might have stirred Infantino in a bunker somewhere in the stadium, but any plans to introduce the technology at the 2018 World Cup are unlikely to hark back to this game for evidence.

Lacking competitive importance and a host of key players from both sides, the game began in something of a torpor as each team took it in turns to produce long spells of possession with little penetration.

Germany's high defensive line left them vulnerable on occasion, Ciro Immobile profiting more than once, but the former Borussia Dortmund striker only got one clear sight at goal and lashed it well wide.

Gianluigi Buffon was sharp off his line to deny Ilkay Gundogan and Thomas Muller at either end of the first half, as well as thwarting the Manchester City midfielder after he latched onto Muller's chipped pass over the Italy defence, only to blast straight at the veteran goalkeeper.

Ventura introduced Gianluigi Donnarumma for his second cap at half-time and the AC Milan prodigy had much less to deal with than Buffon had early in the second half as the Azzurri began brightly.

Belotti tumbled under a clumsy challenge from Germany substitute Jonathan Tah, who was booked shortly after when he tripped Eder.Volland touched Joshua Kimmich's cross past Donnarumma just after the hour, only to be correctly called offside, but Italy had the game's clearest chances late on.

First, Bernd Leno produced a superb save to spurn Federico Bernardeschi's skimming effort, before Belotti hit the post after outmuscling Shkodran Mustafi.
Simone Zaza was handed five minutes to atone for his comical penalty miss in France, but Balotelli's case will be strengthened on this evidence when he discusses his international future with Ventura this week.

France 0-0 Ivory Coast: Dominant hosts' lack of cutting edge exposed in dour draw

    ngolo-kante-france-ivory-coast-friendly-15112016_1etosfyr5ckjn1n9beyxqmy9z5.jpg

Ivory Coast held France to a 0-0 draw in Lens on Tuesday, as Paul Pogba proved unable to steer Les Bleus to victory in the absence of Antoine Griezmann.

The Atletico Madrid playmaker missed the match at Stade Bollaert-Delelis due to a foot injury that could leave him in doubt for the derby against Real Madrid on Saturday.Without the influence of one of the stars of Euro 2016, Didier Deschamps' team laboured to a disjointed stalemate against the Africa Cup of Nations holders.

Pogba, the world's most expensive player, started but was withdrawn at half-time in a change likely to please Jose Mourinho ahead of Manchester United's meeting with Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend.

The former Juventus midfielder did at least produce one of the highlights of an otherwise forgettable game, using the outside of his boot to play a sumptuous pass to the flanks prior to his withdrawal.

A slew of substitutions typical of international friendlies badly disrupted the rhythm of what had been an entertaining contest, Moussa Sissoko missing the hosts' best chance of the second half by contriving to head wide unmarked from close range.

The next opportunity for Deschamps' team to impress will not come until an eminently winnable World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg in March, while Ivory Coast host Zimbabwe in a friendly, before launching the defence of their continental crown against Togo in Gabon on January 16.

France started the stronger of the two sides in Lens, where Adrien Rabiot's header from a Dimitri Payet corner bounced narrowly wide three minutes in. Kevin Gameiro then fizzed a shot just past the near post after Lamine Kone's poor headed attempt to clear a hopeful long ball.

Salomon Kalou had the ball in the back of the net in the 11th minute for Ivory Coast, but was flagged offside on the follow up from Adama Traore's vicious half-volley, which struck the upright and bounced back into the path of the Hertha Berlin forward.

A minute before the half-hour mark, France survived another scare, when Jonathan Kodjia cut inside from the left and dispatched a fierce, dipping shot that was parried by Benoit Costil, with Kalou unable to reach the rebound.

Max Gradel spurned a good opportunity in the 36th minute, dragging a miscued effort wide after being found in space by Serge Aurier on the right side of the penalty area.

Tottenham player Sissoko, a key member of Les Bleus' run to the final of the Euro 2016, should have done better with a free header from Lucas Digne's cross on the hour mark. And Gradel's long-range attempt narrowly failed to embarrass Costil with the keeper stranded after charging out of his goal to head the ball clear.

Nicolas Pepe had the last notable chance of the game in injury time, the substitute getting in behind the France defence only for Costil to snuff out the danger with a brave save from point-blank range.

'Special' Coutinho would improve Barcelona, says Xavi

    laurent-koscielny-ultimate-xixavi_91z8tce4qfix1f1mf1wa9ypdw.jpg

Xavi has declared Philippe Coutinho would be a welcome addition at Barcelona, adding that he has no doubts the Liverpool star would make the grade at Camp Nou.

The Brazilian playmaker has been generating plenty of headlines of late, with his efforts in the Premier League reported to be drawing admiring glances from La Liga.

And Xavi, who is no stranger to what it takes to make the cut at Barcelona, considers the Samba star to be a "special" player and one whose current form establishes him as one of the best midfielders in Europe.

The World Cup winner is unsurprised the 24-year-old has been linked with the Spanish champions, hailing Coutinho as part of an elite group of talent that would improve Luis Enrique’s squad in Catalunya.

However, the Catalan insists there is no rush for Coutinho to take that leap, with it important that he remains focused on the present and ensures that his standards are not allowed to dip.

Xavi told Goal: “Coutinho is a player I have always thought is special - but under [Liverpool coach Jurgen] Klopp he has gone up another level. On form there are not any better midfield players in Europe.

“He has always shown quality but now he is consistently playing well and that is good news for Liverpool if they want to really challenge for the title. “He is playing under one of the most intelligent coaches in Europe. Klopp has a lot of experience at developing world-class players, so it is a good club for him to be at.”

On the Barcelona links, Xavi added: “When you play at the level he is there is always going to be talk, but for now he needs to ignore all that and stay focused, because I think Liverpool have a real chance this season. “There are not many players that can improve Barcelona, but if you are asking me if he is one of them, on this form, I think he is. Technically he is very good. He would suit Barcelona's philosophy well.”

Northern Ireland 0-3 Croatia: Cop-inspired visitors coast to victory

    northern-ireland-croatia_6ohsera3jyok1kno6j48r3nne.jpg

An outstanding performance from Duje Cop saw Croatia secure an easy 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland on Tuesday, ending the host's run of 11 internationals without a home defeat.

It was the Sporting Gijon forward's action which forced the opening goal, with the 26-year-old forcing a save from Alan Mannus who could only palm into the path of Mario Mandzukic for the striker to force home.

Cop then got on the scoresheet with a close-range volleyed finish from a free-kick before Andrej Kramaric sealed an impressive win in the second half with a spectacular 25-yard blockbuster.

Northern Ireland applied some early pressure with Josh Magennis looking dangerous down the right, but they soon found themselves behind.

Alan Mannus could only push Cop's shot from the left-hand side of the box straight to Mandzukic who eventually scrambled the ball over the line for his 29th international goal, moving him up to joint-second with Eduardo in the country's all-time scoring list.Marin Leovac headed wide from a Kramaric cross five minutes later before Croatia opted to slow the tempo.

Ante Cacic's team eventually went in search of a second and, after Mandzukic put his foot through an advertising hoarding following a slight nudge from Johnny Evans, they got it 10 minutes before half-time.

Northern Ireland's defence was static when an unopposed Matej Mitrovic flicked Kramaric's corner into the six-yard box, where a free Cop stole in to volley home.
There was controversy nine minutes after the restart when Mannus picked up a pass from Evans to concede an indirect free-kick near the penalty spot.

It was quickly teed up for substitute Marcelo Brozovic who found the back of the net, but referee Mark Clattenburg pulled play back for an infringement and the Inter midfielder blasted over at the second attempt.

Lafferty struggled to trouble the Croatia defence upon his introduction and the visitors extended their advantage in the 67th minute.Kramaric received the ball in space and sent a sensational strike from distance beyond Mannus and into the top-right corner.

Cop fired narrowly wide from a free-kick before Lafferty was denied a consolation for the hosts by substitute Croatia goalkeeper Ivan Vargic with two minutes remaining.

:love:England 2-2 Spain: Three Lions throw victory away

    england-v-spain-vardy-hd_1lgpr6hkpa3ds1a8pbj7myktnx.jpg

Gareth Southgate's four-match spell as England interim manager came to a dramatic conclusion as Spain scored twice in the dying minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw at Wembley.

It looked as though Southgate's hopes of landing the job on a full-time basis would be given a major boost as the hosts led 2-0 with a minute of normal time remaining in Tuesday's friendly.

But Spain debutant Iago Aspas bent in a superb goal off the inside of the left-hand post and, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Isco squeezed a shot through the legs of substitute goalkeeper Tom Heaton at his near post.

It was a disappointing end to what amounted to a four-game audition for Southgate, which also featured comfortable World Cup qualifying wins over Malta and Scotland either side of a frustrating 0-0 draw in Slovenia.

England's next assignment is a friendly against Germany in March, by which point Southgate is likely to be confirmed as the man entrusted with guiding the Three Lions through the remainder of their qualification campaign and to the finals in Russia in 2018.

His cause was helped here by Adam Lallana's early penalty - the Liverpool midfielder's third goal in as many England appearances after his first 26 caps yielded none - although he departed the action in the 25th minute with an apparent groin injury.

Jamie Vardy's diving header doubled the lead early in the second period, the striker breaking his 951-minute goal drought for club and country before he and his team-mates celebrated with their own version of the 'mannequin challenge'.

England looked well placed to extend their fine recent run but Aspas and Isco had other ideas as Spain maintained their unbeaten record under new head coach Julen Lopetegui.Despite his poor form over the past month, Vardy was involved as England took the lead in the ninth minute.

The Leicester City striker ran onto Lallana's superb pass from the right wing and, after his first touch let him down, was felled by Pepe Reina - making his first international appearance since the 2014 World Cup.

Lallana took responsibility for the spot-kick and converted into the top-right corner, although his evening was soon over as he walked off and was replaced by Theo Walcott.

Raheem Sterling's teasing cross was just out of Vardy's reach as England sought a second and it duly arrived three minutes into the second half when the striker threw himself at captain Jordan Henderson's clipped cross and buried his header past a helpless Reina.

Walcott ought to have made it three shortly afterwards but he was denied by a strong hand from Reina, with Henderson firing wide from the follow-up.Heaton saved awkwardly from David Silva at his near post, before the goalkeeper made more routine stops from Koke and Alvaro Morata.

He could do little about Aspas' goal, however, as England conceded for the first time since their Euro 2016 exit to Iceland and there was worse to come as Isco chested down Dani Carvajal's pass and got the better of Heaton to leave Southgate cursing on the touchline.

:cool:Isco & Aspas paper over cracks as Spain miss Iniesta, Pique & Ramos

    hd-pepe-reina-spain-jamie-vardy-england_19janwyz4lykk11lle5pko631h.jpg

Spain still have not been beaten under Julen Lopetegui. The 2010 World Cup winners and 2012 European champions came from two goals down to rescue a draw at Wembley on Tuesday but, for so long, this team - previously extraordinary - were made to look decidedly ordinary.

Lopetegui's first five fixtures brought four wins and a draw - that away to Italy after La Roja had dominated for almost the entire match. But there was little evidence of such quality here: without Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, David de Gea and Jordi Alba, Spain's second string were also second best.

Pepe Reina clumsily conceded the penalty which allowed England to take the lead, Adam Lallana blasting home from the spot after the goalkeeper had upended Jamie Vardy. It begged the question as to why Lopetegui, who was a goalkeeper himself, is persisting with the 34-year-old Napoli shot-stopper instead of picking the exciting Sergio Rico of Sevilla.

Spain's three-man defence did not work either and Lopetegui reverted to a more orthodox four-man back line before half an hour had been played. With Pique and Ramos both on the way back from injury, Inigo Martinez and Nacho started. But the Real Sociedad defender looked slow and was given a torrid time by the pace of Vardy, while the Madrid man also struggled.

Vardy, who could have been sent off for a horrific tackle on Cesar Azpilicueta in the first half, found space eary in the second half to head home from close range and give England a 2-0 lead that few had expected to see.

After the penalty conceded away to Italy and the spot-kick earlier on in this match, it was the first goal in open play Spain had let in since Lopetegui's arrival. And it also looked like bringing up a maiden defeat for the Basque coach.

But while England were weakened by their substitutions later in the game, Spain strengthened their hand by bringing on Koke, Ander Herrera, Iago Aspas and Isco. it is indicative of the quality available to Lopetegui that he can call on such talent from the bench - even when others are sidelined.

And ultimately it was good enough to turn the game on its head. Aspas, on his Spain debut, raced away and curled in a lovely effort off the post to give Lopetegui's side some hope of a draw.

Still it looked like England would hold on but, deep into added time, Isco poked the ball through the legs of Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton from a tight angle to dampen the party mood at Wembley.

It is fair to say that Spain will not start too many games with this team, with Reina rewarded for his loyalty and both Martinez and Nacho chosen due to the absences of Pique and Ramos.

With Iniesta to return in a few weeks as well, there need not be too much drama. Nevertheless, Lopetegui will want to see some improvement after the poorest period of football in his tenure so far.

Chile 3-1 Uruguay: Alexis double decisive as hosts fight back

    chile-uruguay_14mdqmvjvx7gc1gk3ri5l1lkez.jpg

Alexis Sanchez struck twice in the second half of Chile's 3-1 win over Uruguay on Tuesday to secure a crucial result in their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.Sanchez was named in the starting XI after overcoming a muscle problem which forced him to sit out the goalless draw in Colombia last week.

And the Arsenal star proved to be the difference in Santiago on Tuesday, scoring twice in the second half to complete Chile's comeback while ending Uruguay's four-game unbeaten run.

Edinson Cavani had given visiting Uruguay a 17th-minute lead upon his return to the line-up having served a suspension before Eduardo Vargas levelled proceedings on the stroke of half-time.

Sanchez took centre stage from that point, his 60th-minute volley putting Chile ahead and he made sure of the points 16 minutes later with his 36th international goal as he moved within one of Marcelo Salas' record.

Claudio Bravo gave away a penalty two minutes from the end but he saved Luis Suarez's spot-kick to ensure Chile leapfrogged Colombia into fourth on 20 points, within three of second-placed Uruguay.

Chile and Uruguay were both boosted by some key inclusions for the showdown at Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos.

Sanchez was among three changes to the starting XI. Gary Medel and Pablo Hernandez were also included as Charles Aranguiz, Esteban Mena and Enzo Roco made way. Meanwhile, captain Bravo and Arturo Vidal were deemed fit enough to play despite coming off injured against the Colombians.

Cavani returned after sitting out Uruguay's 2-1 win over Ecuador, with Alvaro Gonzalez also starting as Diego Rolan and Cristhian Stuani dropped out.

And Cavani made his presence felt early, almost giving Uruguay the lead inside two minutes. Gonzalo Jara failed to control the ball, allowing Suarez to get in behind and provide a cutback to an unmarked Cavani but his shot was saved by Bravo, with Gonzalez's follow-up effort flashing wide of the post.

Cavani had another opportunity to break the deadlock three minutes later, however, he blazed over the crossbar as Chile continued to be pegged back.

But Cavani eventually got his goal in the 17th minute. After Chile made a mess of their defensive duties, Suarez nipped in to set up the former, who fired past Bravo.
As the half wore on, Chile - slowly but surely - found their rhythm, creating some decent opportunities via Medel and Mauricio Isla.

And with virtually the last kick of the half, Chile equalised thanks to Vargas. The Hoffenheim forward steadied his run and steered a header beyond Fernando Muslera from Jean Beausejour's inch-perfect delivery - ending his seven-match scoreless run in internationals.

Chile continued where they left off in the second half, dictating the play and tempo, before star midfielder Vidal was substituted 12 minutes after the break.Vidal's withdrawal did not derail the Chileans though, Sanchez putting the hosts ahead on the hour-mark, turning his opponent and allowing the ball to bounce before volleying powerfully.

Vargas almost doubled Chile's lead minutes later, while Uruguay kept Bravo busy at the other end, getting in behind on more than one occasion in search of an equaliser.

The match was put beyond doubt with 14 minutes remaining, when Diaz lofted a ball forward to Sanchez, who kept his composure and outmuscled two defenders to curl the ball beyond Muslera.

Uruguay's hopes of a late comeback were dashed in the 88th minute after Bravo, who gave away a penalty, pushed Suarez's attempt away.

Costa Rica 4-0 USA: Lifeless Americans hammered in World Cup qualifier

    christian-bolanos-111516-usnews-getty-ftr_g1c4e806max1wqsa7h516h1o.jpg

Job security is not exactly something Jürgen Klinsmann has right now.
His seat became exponentially hotter following Tuesday's 4-0 loss to Costa Rica in San Jose.

The U.S. began the World Cup qualifying Hexagonal with two losses for the first time ever. Tuesday's match was the first time the U.S. gave up four goals in a World Cup qualifier since a 4-2 loss to Canada in 1968.

After getting blitzed with a 3-5-2 formation against Mexico, the U.S. returned to a more traditional 4-4-2 setup against the Ticos. It wasn't much better Tuesday as the Americans came out flat and let the Ticos run all over them.

Brad Guzan, starting in net in place of the injured Tim Howard, was no match for the Costa Rican strikers. Costa Rica sub Joel Campbell scored twice in four minutes in the second half.

Guzan's save on Brian Ruiz's bicycle kick in the 14th minute kept the match scoreless. The shot nearly went off the face of Guzan, who was starting in place of the injured Tim Howard.

Costa Rica broke the scoreless tie late in the first half with a Johan Venegas header off a cross from Christian Bolaños. Venegas left in the 66th minute with an injury, but coming out of the break, the Ticos added to their lead as Bolaños sped past Timmy Chandler to boot a chopper that got by Guzan.

Things got testy in the 71st minute after Jozy Altidore picked up a yellow card by running into Celso Borges. That set off a brief shoving match between the clubs before order was restored.

Minutes later Campbell, who was the replacement for Venegas, made it a 3-0 Costa Rica advantage by beating John Brooks one-on-one for a deep ball into the U.S. zone. Campbell easily then poked it past Guzan in the 74th minute. Campbell made it a 4-0 game with a similar shot four minutes later.

Starting 0-2 in their group puts the Americans behind the 8-ball in their attempt to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The USMNT has plenty of time to recover with its next match not until March against Honduras. The question is whether Klinsmann will be on the sideline.

Vardy talks up 'brilliant' Southgate despite late Spain pain

    jamie-vardy-cropped_1tizymxblxl6c1po9anqhozwgg.jpg

Jamie Vardy claimed Gareth Southgate has been "brilliant" in his tenure as interim head coach, despite England conceding two late goals to draw 2-2 with Spain at Wembley on Tuesday.

The hosts had led through Adam Lallana's ninth-minute penalty and Jamie Vardy's goal early in the second half, but Iago Aspas pulled one back in the 89th minute, before Isco struck deep into injury time to deny England.

The Football Association is now set to decide if Southgate will be handed the job on a long-term basis, the former Middlesbrough manager having been elevated from his role coaching the Under-21s to take over from Sam Allardyce.

And Southgate has at least one admirer in the form of Leicester City striker Vardy.
"He has been brilliant," Vardy told ITV when asked about the temporary boss. "He has not changed too much but you have seen in the performance that we came with a plan. It was not to be at the end of the game."

Vardy's effort three minutes into the second half ended a 15-match drought, the 29-year-old having not scored at club or international level since finding the back of the net in a 4-1 defeat at Liverpool in the Premier League in September. Isco & Aspas paper over cracks as Spain miss Iniesta, Pique & Ramos"Yeah it's finally over, let's hope there's more to come," he continued.

Jordan Henderson, standing in as skipper in place of the injured Wayne Rooney, felt his team-mates had done everything required of them to earn a positive result in London, only to let themselves down late on.

"I thought we worked really hard so to concede two goals so late on is really disappointing," the Liverpool midfielder added."We gave everything. We created chances and looked dangerous on the counter, they didn't create many chances.

"We'll go away, we'll have a look back at the game. We matched Spain in terms of work rate and effort, there were a lot of good things. But to reflect on that so soon after conceding those goals is hard."

'Proud' Southgate feels he has proved England point

    garethsouthgate-cropped_1hbznppki2iep1hmzakjy3zbvy.jpg

Gareth Southgate still would not express his wish to be given the England job on a permanent basis despite feeling he has proved his worth following Tuesday's 2-2 friendly draw with Spain. The former Middlesbrough boss guided England to seven points from three World Cup qualifiers - including a 3-0 victory over fierce rivals Scotland - before a dramatic late Spain comeback at Wembley denied him a third win from four.

And although the 46-year-old seems a certainty to be the next full-time England manager, he maintained his stance of refusing to lay bare his own ambitions and instead discussed the growth of the team.

"I've loved doing it, but that's not my decision," he told ITV Sport. "I'm proud of what we've done with the team. We were asked to take over on a temporary measure and tonight's performance was very special.

"[I've proved that] I can handle big occasions. I know myself pretty well but until you're thrown into matches like last Friday [against Scotland] under intense pressure and tactical challenges like [against Spain], you're never sure how it's going to be."I've loved the experience and I'm pleased that the remit we've been given we've fulfilled."

Asked when a final decision would be made by the Football Association on Sam Allardyce's long-term successor, Southgate replied: "I've no idea."We've got an Under-21 Euro finals to prepare for, the draw's in December and I need to know where to park my car from now on as well!"

England had led through Adam Lallana's early penalty and Jamie Vardy's diving header, before Spain grew into the contest throughout the second half and snatched a draw courtesy of their dramatic comeback.

Isco & Aspas paper over cracks as Spain miss Iniesta, Pique & Ramos
Isco's equaliser arrived in the sixth minute of stoppage time when only five had been signalled, but Southgate felt his players would learn more from the draw than in victory."It was a fantastic performance, a fantastic effort, I was so pleased with how we pressed and at times used the ball well," he said.

"Maybe as the second half wore on we started to tire and that's where keeping the ball better will allow us to conserve energy."But we played one of the best teams in world football, the test was phenomenal and I couldn't ask for any more of them.

"It's pointless worrying about that [extra stoppage time], maybe in the end not winning a game like that will be better for us, but I couldn't be prouder."

Darmian: I don't know why Mourinho doesn't pick me

    darmian-cropped_bzy5spcehtpt15tdhcvsn000z.jpg

Matteo Darmian is at a loss to explain why Jose Mourinho has seemed reluctant to give him a chance to re-establish himself in Manchester United's starting XI, even if he has vowed to keep fighting.

Darmian has benefitted from injuries to the likes of Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling to feature in each of United's last three games, but he had not made a Premier League appearance all season before the 0-0 draw with Burnley last month.

With Valencia recently undergoing surgery to repair a broken arm, Darmian could again get the nod when Arsenal visit Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, although Mourinho played Ashley Young at the Italian's favoured right-back position against Swansea City last time out.

It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will trust the former Torino man long term but Darmian is sure he has done all he can to convince the Portuguese of his talents, having turned in a composed performance at wing-back in Italy's 0-0 draw with Germany on Tuesday. When asked to explain his limited game time, Darmian told Rai Sport: "I don't know why, that's a difficult question to answer.

"The coach has to make his decisions and we players have to accept them. I always worked hard and gave my best when called upon and I'll continue to do that."I certainly don't lack determination and that is fundamental, especially during a period where you don't play as much. "From the first day I have put myself at the disposal of the team and tried to prove myself to the coach."

Probed on reports linking him to Inter, Darmian said: "I don't know, it's early to talk about the transfer market. Tomorrow I return to Manchester and we have an important match against Arsenal, one everyone wants to play in."

Lopetegui hails 'really positive start' for Spain debutant Aspas

Julen Lopetegui was thrilled with the performances of Iago Aspas and Ander Herrera after the pair made their Spain debuts in Tuesday's 2-2 friendly draw with England.

The pair were second-half substitutes at Wembley as the visitors mounted a remarkable late comeback, scoring in the 89th and 96th minutes to avoid defeat having been 2-0 down.

Aspas' contribution was especially notable, the Celta Vigo forward cutting in from the right to curl a superb effort in off the left-hand post a minute from normal time, before Isco completed the fightback.

"Certainly we've seen positive things with those two guys," Lopetegui said of Aspas and Herrera in his post-match press conference."They showed creativity, ambition and never gave up. I think it was a really positive start for them in a Spanish shirt.

"My feelings have to be positive. We showed the character to come back from a 2-0 deficit. We had lots of changes during the game and lots of substitutions.
Late pain against Spain, but Southgate the right man for England"That's what we look for when players play for the national side. Hopefully they can apply what they learned tonight in more competitive games ahead.

"The first half was an ugly, tough game for us against these speedy English forwards. The fact we came away with a draw at the end was a real credit to the defence."

Argentina 3-0 Colombia: Messi magic settles qualifier

Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a much-needed 3-0 win over Colombia as they ended their four-match winless run in World Cup qualifying.

Messi struck with a stunning free-kick in the 10th minute before setting up Lucas Pratto for a first-half header at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario on Tuesday.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was a constant threat for Edgardo Bauza's team, who desperately needed their win following a difficult recent period, and set up Angel Di Maria for a tap in for the sealer late on.

Radamel Falcao had a couple of first-half chances for Colombia, but they were otherwise outplayed. The result meant Argentina moved above Colombia in CONMEBOL qualifying, a huge boost following losses to Paraguay and Brazil.

Bauza made three changes to his team comprehensively beaten by Brazil, Pablo Zabaleta, Enzo Perez and Gonzalo Higuain making way for Gabriel Mercado, Ever Banega and Pratto.

Colombia made numerous changes to the team that held Chile last time out, including welcoming back Juan Cuadrado and starting Falcao. It was the hosts who started the better, and Nicolas Otamendi headed a Messi free-kick over the bar in the sixth minute.Falcao had a tough chance just two minutes later before Messi opened the scoring in sublime fashion.

The Barcelona star gave David Ospina no chance, his 25-yard effort curling away from the goalkeeper and in off the crossbar.Falcao almost equalised for Colombia in the 19th minute, only to send his powerful header from a James Rodriguez free-kick over the bar.His team would be punished for the miss, more Messi brilliance seeing Argentina 2-0 up as his chipped pass found Pratto to head into the bottom corner in the 23rd minute.

Di Maria went close with a volley after the break before blasting an effort against the post from an angle following a Messi pass.

Argentina seemed more content to sit back in the second half and the visitors struggled to break them down, while looking vulnerable on the counter-attack.They would seal the points in the 84th minute, again thanks to Messi.Messi won the ball in the corner before racing into the area, cutting back for Di Maria to put a finish into the roof of the net and secure victory.

Liverpool should sign Gerrard - Lawrenson

Steven Gerrard would be an asset to Liverpool both on and off the field if Jurgen Klopp should decide to bring the Anfield legend back to the club, according to Mark Lawrenson.

Gerrard confirmed on Tuesday that he would not be renewing his LA Galaxy contract, with a decision yet to be made over calling time on his career. But Lawrenson, who won five league titles with Liverpool, believes the 36-year-old could still make an impact in the Premier League.

"They will not have to pay him fortunes – they can tell him if they need him he'll play," Lawrenson, who insists Gerrard could "definitely play in this Liverpool team", told BBC Sport.

"The most important thing in all this, though, is that he would not be seen as a threat by Jurgen Klopp if he was on the coaching staff.

"He would be brilliant to have around the club because he would be in awe of Klopp, so that is just not a worry. I am sure Klopp would love it too – the only effects would be positive."He has already coached Liverpool's under-16 team for a while in 2015 and really enjoyed it.

"If you are an under-16 and getting coached by Stevie G, then how good is that?"
Gerrard has already confirmed that playing and coaching offers have been put to him, giving him a testing decision to make in the coming weeks.

"I've learned a lot. Off the coaches and off my team-mates and I'll certainly use that for myself moving forward," Gerrard, who made 710 appearances for Liverpool, told reporters."Although I'm going back to England to live, it's certainly not the end of me in football terms.

"I've got a lot of things to consider over the coming weeks and months and I'm sure I'll be back involved in the game somewhere down the line."I've got options on the pitch, off the pitch. I've got a bit of thinking to do over the next two, three weeks.

"I'm not ready to make a decision or finalise anything that I'm going to be doing moving forward."What I will say is I'm going home to spend some time with my family and basically go over my options and decide which is the next best challenge for me."

Gerrard won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, but the Premier League title eluded him. Klopp's side sit currently top of the table after 11 matches this season.

Balotelli 'must do more' for Italy recall

    balotelli-cropped_1kp5eoohqak12zfjds9ch2nw9.jpg

Mario Balotelli says continued snubs from Italy coach Giampiero Ventura will only make him strive for even better performances with Nice.

Balotelli has scored seven goals in nine games for Nice, since leaving Liverpool for the south of France on transfer deadline day.His impressive form has helped Lucien Favre's side to the top of Ligue 1, ahead of powerhouses Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.

However, Balotelli remains without an international cap since the 2014 World Cup, with Ventura partnering Serie A's top-scoring Italians, Andrea Belotti and Ciro Immobile, in attack against Liechtenstein.

Simone Zaza and Lorenzo Insigne, without a goal between them for West Ham and Napoli this term, were the back-up strikers in Ventura's most recent squad, but Balotelli is not bitter about his exclusion."If I am ok, I can play anywhere," Balotelli told Sky Sport ahead of Italy's friendly with Germany at San Siro on Tuesday.

"If I haven't been picked with Italy, it means that I must do more. Tonight I haven't picked myself but I will only go as a fan. Then I will talk with Ventura and we will see.

"If he hasn't picked me, he will have his reasons and that's not an issue.
"I am working and I keep focusing on my club. "When he picks me I will be happy. But today there's no problem, there will be somebody who is fitter or better than me. Belotti is good, he is scoring and he deserves to be there."
