Ribery signs new Bayern contract until 2018

    franck-ribery-bayern-munich_17rgvbs8etxey1rmrnenme3qgc.jpg

Bayern Munich have confirmed that winger Franck Ribery has signed a new deal with the club until 2018.

The 33-year-old's previous deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, but the agreement – announced by the club on Sunday – lengthens his stay.
Ribery joined Bayern from Marseille in 2007, winning six Bundesliga titles and the Champions League among a total of 18 winners' medals he has accumulated."I'm very happy to play for FC Bayern for another year," the winger told the club's official website.

"This great club and the city have become my home, both in terms of sport and in private."I'm looking forward to many more beautiful moments together with the FC Bayern fans, and I want to play my part in the team's success in the next one and a half years."

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was overjoyed to strike a deal with the club icon.He said: "Six German championship titles, five cup triumphs, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Supercup: FC Bayern's biggest triumphs in the last few years are closely linked with Franck Ribery.

"He's both a key player and a crowd-pleaser, so we are happy we have extended the contract with Franck by another year."Ribery was a second-half substitute as Bayern defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

He has made 333 appearances for the club and scored 108 times across all competitions.

Manchester United in negotiations with Benfica over Lindelof

    victor-lindelof-benfica-2016_z9ynxsn8b6ls1wem9d3dxoq88.jpg

Manchester United are currently in negotiations with Benfica about the possibility of signing defender Victor Lindelof, Goal understands.

Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bring the Sweden international to Old Trafford, but may have to pay more than Lindelof's current €30 million release clause to bring him to the Premier League.

Lindelof is undergoing contract talks with the Portuguese side, which could see his release clause doubled to deter interest from United, PSG, and Inter Milan.

The centre-back started all three of Sweden's group games at Euro 2016, and was handed the captain's armband when he came off the bench in their 2-0 friendly win over Hungary in November.
Only 22, Lindelof has already helped Benfica to two Primeira Liga titles as well as Taca de Portugal and Taca da Liga trophies. He is also decorated at international level, having been named in the Uefa Team of the Tournament after winning the European Under-21 Championship with Sweden in 2015.

Lindelof could link up wth fellow Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford, and the country's record goalscorer believes he has the talent to make the step up."I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing," ibrahimovic told reporters.

"Is he good enough for United? I think he's good enough for the big clubs out there. It's up to him what he wants. Whatever he chooses will be good for him.
"I know he is hot on the market so let him make the right choice, what fits him good."

Griezmann open to Premier League move amid Manchester United links

    uefa-team-of-the-year-antoine-griezmann_19dz3b2rmx9gt14wp25kh1pxn0.jpg

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has ruled out a move to Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain, but he would be open to a transfer to Barcelona or the Premier League.

The 25-year-old is one of the most sought-after players in the game and has been linked with a move away from Atletico on more than one occasion, despite penning a new deal at the Vicente Calderon until 2021 in June.

Manchester United are allegedly keen to lure him to Old Trafford and Griezmann has now boosted the Premier League side's hopes of getting their man by admitting he can see himself in the English top flight.

"A transfer between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid is not an option," Griezmann told Telefoot."Barcelona would be an option. But they have three untouchables in attack at the moment.

"PSG could be an interesting option, but I do not want to move to Ligue 1 at this stage of my career."I prefer to stay in La Liga or maybe move to the Premier League. I have heard the Premier League is crazy, so why not?"But I do not want to leave Atletico at all costs."

Griezmann was named player of the tournament at Euro 2016 after finishing with six goals for France, following an excellent season with Atletico, where he helped Diego Simeone's side reach the Champions League final.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that Griezmann would be an excellent signing for Mourinho, and has tipped him to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the Red Devils.

"I think Griezmann would be up there," Scholes told BT Sport."He looks like a top centre forward for Atletico."I think we need to be in the market for someone like that."

Schweinsteiger close to retiring - Hoeness

    bastianschweinsteiger-cropped_nt1qq6yi82mp1qcbv5v29cvus.jpg

Uli Hoeness has suggested Manchester United outcast Bastian Schweinsteiger is ready retire.

Schweinsteiger left Bayern for United in 2015, but has not hit the same heights at Old Trafford that he did during a distinguished spell at the Allianz Arena. Problems with injury and form saw him struggle to make an impact last season, before he was deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho at the start of this campaign.

He has yet to feature for United in any competition this term and recent reports suggested he could leave United for a move to MLS in January, while Brazilian side Santos have also shown an interest.

However, Hoeness has hinted the 32-year-old midfielder could leave the game altogether in the not too distant future.

"From what I have heard, Basti is close to retiring from football," Hoeness was quoted as saying by Bild."I do not think we would be doing him or ourselves a favour with a return to Bayern."

Schweinsteiger's contract with United is due to expire in 2018.

Genoa 3-1 Juventus: Simeone Jr. bags two as Serie A champions stunned

    giovanni-simeone-genoa_1vfpr4rkdhoth17698k82w84b6.jpg

Giovanni Simeone netted twice to help Genoa to a shock 3-1 win over leaders Juventus in Sunday's Serie A encounter at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The Argentine had failed to score in his last six league outings, but rediscovered his touch as Juve suffered a nightmare opening half an hour during which they conceded three times and left themselves too much to do.Simeone opened the scoring after just three minutes with a finish from close range, doubling his tally shortly after with a glancing header.

An own goal from Alex Sandro then all but put the match to bed as Genoa claimed their second big scalp of the campaign, having trounced AC Milan 3-0 at home last month.

Miralem Pjanic netted a fine consolation free-kick with eight minutes remaining, but the reigning champions were ultimately undone by their dreadful start as they fell to their third league defeat of 2016-17.

This weekend's results see Milan close to within four points of Juve at the summit, with Roma able to pull level with the Rossoneri if they beat Pescara later on Sunday.

Genoa made a flying start and went 1-0 up after some shocking defending from Leonardo Bonucci sent Luca Rigoni clean through on goal. Gianluigi Buffon did well to deny the winger but the rebound eventually fell to Simeone, who beat the goalkeeper at the second attempt.

Things then went from bad to worse for Juve as Simeone doubled his side's lead with a close-range header from Darko Lazovic's pinpoint cross.

It was all Genoa before the interval and Juve fell 3-0 down before the half-hour mark. Nicolas Burdisso headed the ball into Rigoni's path and the winger steered an attempt against the underside of the bar, before the ball crossed the goalline via the Brazilian's thigh.

There was more bad news for the visitors shortly afterwards when Bonucci was forced off with what seemed like a hamstring injury, Daniele Rugani taking his place in defence.

Juve could have pulled one back early in the second half when Pjanic aimed just wide after being set up by Mario Mandzukic, with Sami Khedira also spurning a gilt-edged chance.

Massimiliano Allegri opted to bring on Gonzalo Higuain for Stephan Lichtsteiner as Juve went looking for a way back in, but their attacking substitution nearly cost them when Simeone popped up in front of Buffon, the goalkeeper only just managing to deflect his shot wide.

To make matters worse for Juve, Dani Alves was forced off injured after they had already made three changes, with Pjanic's magnificent free-kick the only bright spot of an otherwise miserable outing.

Arsenal 3-1 Bournemouth: Alexis and Walcott get Gunners back to winning ways

    alexis-sanches-theo-walcott-arsenal-bournemouth_1lz5d2ktwceex1fv25q15hemam.jpg

Alexis Sanchez continued his fine run of form by scoring twice in Arsenal's hard-fought 3-1 over a resilient Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. With Premier League leaders Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all winning on Saturday the onus was on the Gunners to respond on home turf.

Arsene Wenger's men did not have it all their own way, though, as Bournemouth - devoid of Arsenal-loanee Jack Wilshere - put in a good showing in north London.

It was a mistake of their own doing that saw Arsenal take the lead when Sanchez pounced on Steve Cook's error to break the deadlock, but Bournemouth's efforts were rewarded before half-time when Callum Wilson levelled from the penalty spot.

Arsenal produced a marked improvement after the break and afforded Bournemouth significantly fewer opportunities and they edged ahead early in the second half thanks to Theo Walcott's header.

Bournemouth continued to cause problems and were adamant that they should have been awarded a second spot-kick late on as they desperately sought a leveller, but Sanchez broke the visitors' resolve for good in injury time with his seventh goal in his past eight games.

Arsenal stay fourth as a result of the victory, three points adrift of table-toppers Chelsea.Bournemouth gave a good account of themselves during the opening exchanges, but they shot themselves in the foot in the 12th minute.

Cook's horrendous back pass went straight to Sanchez and the forward stroked his effort past the stranded Adam Federici from 18 yards.

Arsenal suffered a blow shortly after as Mathieu Debuchy - making his first Premier League start since November 8 2015 due to Hector Bellerin's injury absence - was replaced by Gabriel Paulista after picking up a hamstring problem. And within eight minutes of that defensive reshuffle, Bournemouth restored parity.

Nacho Monreal was caught the wrong side of Wilson in the area and clumsily tripped him, with the striker dusting himself off to confidently dispatch the resulting penalty.Bournemouth continued to show plenty of purpose in attack and tested Petr Cech twice in quick succession through Adam Smith and then Brad Smith.

But Arsenal's individual brilliance shone through on occasion and Sanchez smashed against the crossbar from a tight angle on the stroke of half-time.Arsenal looked more solid in midfield and at the back after the break and they restored their lead in the 53rd minute.

Mesut Ozil did well on the left, keeping the ball from his marker with clever footwork before delivering an inch-perfect cross to Monreal, who guided the ball into the danger zone where Walcott was on hand to nod in from close range.

Despite their improvement, Arsenal were lucky to stay ahead in the closing stages, as Monreal managed to avoid punishment for handling in the penalty area, before Cech denied former Arsenal trainee Benik Afobe from point-blank range.

But Bournemouth's desperation in attack was ultimately their undoing, as substitute Olivier Giroud cut back for Sanchez to finish off a rapid break to wrap things up in stoppage time.

Osasuna 0-3 Atletico Madrid: Godin, Gameiro and Carrasco send Simeone's men fourth

    kevin-gameiro-osasuna-atletico-madrid-la-liga_1gzxti0nqe8py1eynq76i1p47n.png

Diego Godin, Kevin Gameiro and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco were all on target as Atletico Madrid ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at struggling Osasuna on Sunday.

Clinical finishes in the latter stages of the first half from Godin and Gameiro put Atleti in control and Carrasco's late effort ensured the points as Diego Simeone's side bounced back from consecutive LaLiga defeats to Real Sociedad and Real Madrid to move fourth in the table.

Atletico had won only two of their previous five games in the top flight and had goalkeeper Jan Oblak to thank for stopping them from going behind early on as he saved a penalty from Roberto Torres.

Osasuna - who had won only once in their last nine meetings with the visitors prior to Sunday's clash at El Sadar - were left to rue that miss as Godin's header and Gameiro's fine finish gave them a mountain to climb before the break.

The hosts, who have won one league game all season, enjoyed more possession in the second half but without testing Oblak, and they were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men when Oier Sanjurjo handled the ball on the line.

Carrasco saw another handball shout waved away, but he added the third in the closing stages as Atleti moved above Villarreal and back to within nine points of league leaders Madrid.

Atleti should have taken the lead in only the second minute, Gameiro side-footing wide of the near post after being picked out near the six-yard box by Antoine Griezmann.

Osasuna, who have scored just four LaLiga goals at home this season, were awarded a penalty with 14 minutes played when Jose Gimenez shoved Oriol Riera in the back, but Oblak dived low to his left to parry Torres' effort. The game descended into a scrappy affair following those early opportunities but, 10 minutes before the break, the visitors suddenly seized control.

First, Godin rose highest to head in Koke's corner to put Atleti ahead, and their lead was doubled barely 90 seconds later as Gameiro raced clear onto Angel Correa's lofted pass before slotting low past goalkeeper Nauzet Perez.

Osasuna were better after the break but opportunities for either side were scarce, with the visitors content to sit deeper and frustrate a team who have won only once at home in LaLiga since beating Atletico 3-0 in February 2014.

Joaquin Caparros' side were extremely fortunate not to concede a penalty with a little over 20 minutes to play, when Oier handled the ball on the line following Tiago's cut-back, although Atleti had escaped a clear offside earlier in the move.

Carrasco came off the bench to add a counter-attacking threat to Atleti's play, and he was unlucky not to win a spot-kick after his attempted cross to Griezmann struck the hand of Unai Garcia just inside the area.

Griezmann was taken off with seven minutes to go, meaning his league goal drought now stands at six games, but Carrasco capped a positive outing for Atleti in the 90th minute as he pounced on an error from Garcia, charged into the box and drilled low into Nauzet's bottom-right corner.

The victory, and a first clean sheet in the league since October 2, will give Atleti plenty of confidence as they look to keep pace with the top three.

Manchester United 1-1 West Ham: Ibra rescues point for Red Devils

    hgf2z449745e17ewhr6x6g3p5.jpg

Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands for the second time this season as Manchester United's Old Trafford woes continued in a 1-1 draw against West Ham on Sunday.United's last home victory in the Premier League came on September 24 and this was their fourth consecutive league draw on their own turf.

And Mourinho's frustrations boiled over when he was ordered to leave the touchline by referee Jon Moss after kicking a water bottle in the first half following a foul given against Paul Pogba for a dive.West Ham made a rapid start and Diafra Sakho threatened to inflict a second home defeat of the campaign on the Red Devils with a goal after 90 seconds.

United were quickly back on level terms thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic but, despite introducing Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan off the bench, the Red Devils were unable to find a winning goal - although Jesse Lingard did see one ruled out with 15 minutes remaining.

Another home draw leaves United in sixth, four points adrift of Tottenham, while West Ham climb a place to 16th after a stoic defensive showing.West Ham's last win at Old Trafford came in 2007, but Sakho's rapid opener boosted their chances of ending that run.

A clumsy foul by Lingard - one of two United changes from last week's 1-1 draw against Arsenal - gave Dimitri Payet the chance to whip a free-kick into the penalty area, where Sakho beat Ibrahimovic to place a bullet header beyond David de Gea.

Juan Mata began the United recovery with a crisp shot straight at Darren Randolph after 15 minutes, and soon after the hosts were level as Ibrahimovic atoned for his earlier mistake.

Pogba's brilliant ball over the top picked out the Swedish striker, who had drifted away from James Collins to nod past Randolph.Pogba's next involvement led to Mourinho being ushered to the stands after the Portuguese angrily kicked a water bottle when the France international was penalised for a dive.

And his mood will hardly have improved when Lingard, Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford were wasteful with the goal in their sights in a strong end to the half from United.Mourinho would have been even more frustrated had West Ham caught the hosts cold soon after the restart, Sakho and Payet both testing De Gea's reflexes.

It was a rare attempt on either goal, though, and United looked to freshen things up with the introduction of Rooney and Mkhitaryan - who both starred in Thursday's 4-0 Europa League battering of Feyenoord - just after the hour.

Rooney had a chance to end his 10-game run without a league goal three minutes after replacing Rashford but his effort was meek and Randolph comfortably held.
The hosts continued to push for a winner and Lingard thought he had snatched all three points as he converted after Mkhitaryan's effort struck the post, only for the assistant's flag to deny him.

United laid siege to the West Ham goal in the closing minutes, but the visitors defence remained resolute and the Hammers could have won it with a late Ashley Fletcher chance that was well saved by De Gea.

Griezmann open to Premier League move amid Manchester United links

His career will be ruined.
He can fortget about winning the ballon dor in the future. Winning the champions league in the future. At least featuring in the best XI. Specially if he goes to united to be under Murinho.

Liverpool is a good option for him. Otherwise should stay at atleti or join one of the top 3 clubs where almost all the starting positions are filled

United's fortunes will change – Faria

    ruifaria-cropped_srwl611bph1v1rpkyun2w0tk2.jpg

It may have been another frustrating day at Old Trafford for Manchester United but assistant manager Rui Faria is confident their fortunes will change.

United were forced to share the spoils for the fourth consecutive home match in the Premier League on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham.

Jose Mourinho let frustration get the better of him during the game, kicking a water bottle in anger after Paul Pogba was booked for diving, prompting referee Jon Moss to banish him to the stands.

The Portuguese consequently shunned his post-match media duties, and Faria - who attended in his absence - cut a frustrated figure, but remained optimistic that the Red Devils will turn their situation around."Again, you know, we did more than enough to win the game in a comfortable way," he told BBC Sport.

"We didn't and the reality is that we are playing well. The team is doing what we ask. We create the opportunities but we are not scoring the goals and we are suffering because we want to win the matches.

"The answers are on the pitch. We create good chances and as a team we played very well. What we didn't get was the goals that should happen with the opportunities we create to win the match. "We can say we are unlucky and in the last matches we should get different results."We all believe the results will appear."

When asked to explain Mourinho's dismissal - his second of the campaign - Faria backed his manager's views that Pogba had been fouled. He added: "The referee explained it to Jose and there is nothing more to say. I think [it was] frustration from Jose after the yellow card for Pogba. It should be a foul for us but the referee understood it in another way.

"I don't take over. I follow the normal procedure. The boss is Jose all the time and he passes on what is the best for the team and we just try to make it happen without having him there.

'West Ham were lucky' - Herrera frustrated by another Old Trafford stalemate

    payetherrera-cropped_ndrz84pvgt621nopxevcd89ze.jpg

Ander Herrera was lost for words after Manchester United were held to a fourth successive Premier League draw at Old Trafford despite controlling proceedings against West Ham.

Although United fell behind early to Diafra Sakho, Jose Mourinho's men quickly asserted their dominance and had numerous chances to seal all three points after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's leveller.

The hosts created 17 chances across the 90 minutes, eight of them on target, but Darren Randolph and the West Ham defence remained resolute. It is the first time United have drawn four consecutive league home games since December 1980, and Herrera was unsure how their frustrating record had been extended.

"Another game the same," he told BBC Sport. "We controlled the game completely from the kick-off. They got a very lucky goal and then we controlled and created chances.

"Their keeper was the best [player] one more time. That happened against Stoke, Burnley and Arsenal. We don't know what we have to do to win a game."We have more possession than the opponents. I don't know, honestly.

"I have had a run like this but not playing good. The way we are playing we are controlling the whole game from the kick-off. I don't know what to say, it's frustrating for all of us."Football is about scoring goals and finishing and we are not doing that right. It is true."

Juventus confirm broken leg for Dani Alves

    dani-alves-juventus-02112016_25ezpj5cmn8dzxl79tckr2yu.jpg

Juventus have announced that Dani Alves suffered a serious leg break during the 3-1 Serie A loss to Genoa on Sunday.

The former Barcelona full-back was carried off on a stretcher with 14 minutes left to play at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, after hurting himself following a clumsy challenge on Lucas Ocampos.

Tests have now revealed that he has sustained a compound fracture and is therefore likely to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with further examinations set to take place on Monday.

"The first assessments carried in hospital have revealed a compound fracture of the fibula of his left leg, which will be re-evaluated tomorrow [Monday]," a Juventus statement confirmed.

Leonardo Bonucci is also set for tests back in Turin after he picked up a thigh muscle injury in the shock defeat."With regard to Leonardo Bonucci, a strain to the left thigh was detected, which will also be reassessed," the club said.

Two goals from Giovanni Simeone - the son of Atletico Madrid head coach Diego - helped Genoa to a win that means Juve's lead at the top of Serie A remains at four points.

Mourinho leads Manchester United to worst start since 1990-91

    jose-mourinho-cropped_4y13zvnq6wjn12uh05dmnegaz.jpg

Manchester United are enduring their worst start to a league season since 1990-91 following Sunday's 1-1 draw with West Ham United.

The Old Trafford side turned to Jose Mourinho ahead of 2016-17 after three underwhelming years under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, but the former Chelsea boss has failed to get things back on track for now.

United have collected just 20 points from their opening 13 fixtures, their worst total since 1990-91, when they actually found themselves on 21 points after 13 games, but had a point deducted following a brawl with Arsenal.

Mourinho's men are already trailing leaders Chelsea by 11 points following this weekend's results - with fourth-placed Arsenal eight points clear in the battle for Champions League qualification - and they are just one point closer to first place than they are to bottom spot following their latest hiccup against West Ham.

United's poor run of form got the better of Mourinho on Sunday, with the Portuguese sent to the stands by referee Jon Moss when he showed his frustration with his decision to book Paul Pogba for diving by kicking a water bottle.Mourinho will be hoping United can improve on their poor start when they travel to Everton next week.

Lyon 1-2 PSG: Cavani double takes champions to within a point of Nice

    edinson-cavani-lyon-paris-sg-ligue-1-27112016_bqr5egmvh46t114u2vd7rkxpy.jpg

Edinson Cavani's late header secured Paris Saint-Germain a hard-fought 2-1 win at Lyon on Sunday to capitalise on Nice's earlier slip-up in Ligue 1.

Lyon looked destined to secure a point thanks to Mathieu Valbuena's equaliser at the start of the hosts' marvellous second-half display, but Cavani shattered their hopes nine minutes from the end to continue his brilliant season in France and take PSG to within a point of pacesetters Nice.PSG made light work of Lyon at times in the first half, dominating throughout and deservedly taking the lead through Cavani's penalty in the 30th minute.

But PSG, who saw numerous first-half chances wasted, were made to rue their prolificacy just after the break, as Valbuena levelled with his first Ligue 1 goal since October 2015 just after coming off the bench, a goal that spurred Lyon on to exert some control of their own.

Hatem Ben Arfa, making his first league start since September 9, had no impact against his former side and as the second period progressed Bruno Genesio's men only became more threatening, giving PSG no end of problems.

But Cavani rounded off a rapid break towards the end with his 13th league goal in 12 matches to secure the win, making the most of Nice's stalemate with Bastia earlier on Sunday.

PSG gradually became the dominant force and were adamant that they should have been awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute, but referee Ruddy Buquet dismissed their protests after Lucas Moura appeared to be nudged over by Jeremy Morel.

Lucas was at the centre of things again shortly after, but his attempt to meet Serge Aurier's low cross with a flicked finish backfired, as he knocked the ball on to his other leg with the goal at his mercy. They were ahead after half an hour, though.

Rafael clumsily hacked Thiago Motta to the ground while attempting to clear his lines to concede a penalty and Cavani converted the spot-kick.Lucas should have added a second a few moments later, only for the Brazilian to fire wide of the left-hand post when played into the right side of the area.

Clearly unimpressed with his team's efforts in the first half, Genesio replaced Maciej Rybus with Valbuena and he made an instant impact, slamming home a left-footed half-volley from 12 yards after Rafael's lovely curling strike came back off the left-hand post.Lyon almost went ahead a few moments later, but Alexandre Lacazette stabbed just wide of the near post after meeting Morel's low cross.

The hosts' improvement was significant as they carved PSG open at will and Rachid Ghezzal should have scored their second just after the hour mark, but his touch allowed Alphonse Areola to pounce on the ball when played into the box by Lacazette.

And PSG took full advantage of Lyon's inability to convert their chances, as substitute Thomas Meunier provided a fine cross at the end of a swift counter-attack and Cavani bundled in from close range to sink their hosts.

Real Sociedad 1-1 Barcelona: Below-par champions lose more ground on Real Madrid

Lionel Messi rescued a point for below-par Barcelona as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday.

The Argentina star scored his 19th goal of the season just before the hour mark to cancel out Willian Jose's header, but a largely poor performance from the champions meant their nine-year wait for a win at Anoeta goes on.

Barca had lost on their last four league visits to San Sebastian and that record looked to be playing on their minds in a nervous and deeply disjointed first-half display in which they failed to register a shot until the 41st minute.

Sociedad had been by far the better side and were good value for the lead when the breakthrough came shortly after half-time, with Willian Jose's effort being sliced into his own goal by Gerard Pique as he covered the goal line.

Messi responded soon afterwards following good work from Neymar, but a winner for the visitors never looked likely and Carlos Vela crashed an effort off the underside of the crossbar from 20 yards before Juanmi's rebound was unjustly ruled out for the hosts.

Denis Suarez had a shot blocked and Javier Mascherano steered a header narrowly wide, before Vela clipped the base of the post with another effort that had Marc-Andre ter Stegen beaten.

Ultimately there was to be no winner, however, meaning Sociedad miss out on the chance to move above Atletico Madrid into fourth, while Barca could only close to within six points of league leaders Real Madrid.

Barca certainly looked like a side feeling the pressure of their poor run at Anoeta, with a sliced clearance from Pique and a subsequent mix-up between Mascherano and Ter Stegen underlining their nervousness early on.

Xabi Prieto's downward header forced a strong stop from Ter Stegen as Sociedad continued to look the more threatening, and a poor first touch from Vela - in behind a static Barca defence - saw another good chance go begging.

Barca's front three looked completely isolated during a dismal first half for the visitors, during which they registered no shots on target, no crosses from open play and only 47 per cent of the possession.

Neymar saw a free-kick pushed around the post by Geronimo Rulli shortly after the break but, just as Barca looked like mustering some improvement, they went a goal behind.

Vela's persistence forced Mascherano into a mistake and, when Ter Stegen blocked his effort 12 yards out, Willian Jose headed the rebound goalwards and it was sliced into the top corner by Pique as he attempted to hook it off the line.

The goal was no less than La Real deserved but their lead lasted only six minutes, as Messi found an equaliser to cap Barca's first piece of real quality in the whole of the opening hour.

Neymar drove into space down the left and squared the ball to Messi just inside the area, where the Argentina star took a touch before drilling low past Rulli and into the bottom corner.

Sociedad responded positively to the setback and came within inches of regaining their lead through Vela, whose curling shot from just outside the area came off the underside of the crossbar, before Juanmi's tap-in from the rebound was denied by a contentious offside call.

Suarez bundled through the penalty area only to see his shot blocked in front of the line before Mascherano headed wide from the corner, and Vela clipped the post with a low curling shot from the edge of the area that left Ter Stegen motionless, but there was to be no late hero for either side.
