:love:Manchester Reignited: Martial's return to form typifies what Mourinho's Man Utd were missing

    anthony-martial-manchester-united-west-ham_1ooynvcn2ldx01ewhh3dm5ohbo.jpg

Jose Mourinho has spoken a lot of a shortage of luck in recent weeks, but what his Manchester United have arguably missed more is composure in the final third. It might be more convenient for a manager to claim that his side are doing everything they can to gain results, but if they are not making the most of good situations then there is more than misfortune at the heart of the problem.

Last season it was Anthony Martial who often found a way to bail out Louis van Gaal when his iteration of United were struggling to convert their chances, but the Frenchman’s form in 2016-17 has not been sufficient to even win favour with Mourinho let alone put his club on the right track.

As United were failing to break a 1-1 tie against West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday, Martial was sat in the directors’ box, unable to do anything but watch as the Reds threw away another two points. On Wednesday he showed he has still got it though, scoring twice in the second half to drag United out of their latest tricky spot and secure a 4-1 EFL Cup quarter-final victory over the Hammers.

It is inarguable that Martial has not been himself for much of this term. He has not found himself in goalscoring positions nearly as often as he had done under Van Gaal, and even when he had he seemed not to be as confident of delivering the killer blow. Mourinho even went as far as to suggest last week that Martial was simply more suited to the more measured style of play championed by the Dutchman and that the 20-year-old must work hard at making himself more of a Mourinho type of player.

After a first half in which Martial flickered without dazzling, United went in at the break level with West Ham; Ashley Fletcher had pounced on a David de Gea error to cancel out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s second-minute opener. But the second period belonged to the Frenchman.

First he lashed home from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s pull-back after Antonio Valencia’s back-heel had sent the Armenian racing towards the West Ham goal. Then, on the hour, he was on hand to tap home after drifting off his marker to meet Valencia’s square pass. It really was exactly the kind of performance and goal-scoring return he had desperately needed.

When he left the field with four minutes left on the clock the only thing louder than the crowd’s appreciation for Martial’s display was there ovation for the returning Bastian Schweinsteiger, who took his place for his first appearance of the season. Moments later the fans were celebrating a second for Ibrahimovic in injury time to cap off a great evening.

This is obviously just the first step for the Frenchman. He will want, and need, to show he can turn United’s opportunities into goals on a more regular basis in order to win Mourinho’s permanent faith. But the Portuguese knows who to thank for the place his team now take in the semi-final draw.

Mourinho: Half-time pep talk was catalyst for United win

    jose-mourinho-cropped_1j4jt7w4eh4hg1h0vffm7usug2.jpg

Jose Mourinho revealed that a half-time pep talk set Manchester United on their way to the EFL Cup semi-finals as they roared to a 4-1 triumph over West Ham at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese was serving a one-match touchline ban on Wednesday, but his side shrugged off his absence to record a convincing victory as Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two apiece.

Despite dominating the first half the hosts were level at the break, with former United youngster Ashley Fletcher equalising against the run of play, which left Mourinho's men in need of some words of encouragement.

"After their goal we had 10 minutes where we felt it deeply and the players couldn't hide that, because West Ham's first shot they equalised," the United boss, whose side drew Hull City in the last four, told Sky Sports.

"But in the second half the team again got the confidence to play and to win comfortably and playing beautiful, attacking football, which is something the fans like, but we need results."I told them at half-time that it's not possible to play so well and because of a goal you stop playing so well.

"I told them forget the goal. We are playing so well that we have to keep confidence, so forget the undeserved goal. Forget that at half-time we should be winning and we aren't. "And in the second half we had the goals. Goals plus performance means the real happiness."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan turned in a man-of-the-match display and the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder may have played his way into contention for a starting berth in the Premier League.Mourinho added: "I'm so happy because he was against a Premier League team with Premier League qualities and Premier League characteristics.

"That showed clearly his evolution because against Feyenoord [in the Europa League] we could think, 'Okay, it's a different profile of football' – this was against a proper and typical Premier League team and Micky could perform in this way.
"We know the reason we brought him and we were waiting for his evolution and it looks like it's coming."

Chapecoense asked to play last Brasileirao fixture to honour plane crash dead

    chapecoense-cropped_yehol9dt5iog1umwj14oflf5o.jpg

Chapecoense president Ivan Tozzo says his team have been asked to fulfil their next scheduled league fixture to honour the players and staff that died in an air crash before their Copa Sudamericana final.

The flight, carrying members of the first team and a number of journalists, came down in Cerro Gordo, Colombia killing 71 of the 77 people on board.

Chapecoense were in Colombia to face Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the second-tier continental final. Atletico have requested that Chapecoense be crowned champions by CONMEBOL, South America's governing body.Previously vice-president, Tozzo has assumed duties at the head of the club.

He revealed on Wednesday that Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Marco Polo del Nero has requested that they line-up for their Campeonato Brasileiro match against Atletico Mineiro on December 11.

Tozzo said at a news conference: "I spoke with president Marco Polo del Nero and he told me the game against Atletico Mineiro, which is our next game, we're going to have a big event in Chapeco, which is going to be scheduled. "I replied to him: 'But we don't have 11 players to put on the field!'

"He said to me: 'You guys have it. You have a base team [Under-20s). Put on the players that are recovering from injury, which is five or six players, and another who is ready to play, and then complete the team with juniors.

"It doesn't matter what the final score is. We have to have a big party that you deserve, that Chapeco deserves, that the region deserves, that Santa Catarina deserves, and that Brazil deserves.'"

Though Chapecoense's squad has been decimated by the tragedy, several Brazilian clubs have reportedly offered to loan them players at no cost in order to fulfil their fixtures.Chapecoense also offered medical updates on their three players to survive the crash.

Goalkeeper Jackson Follmann has had a leg amputated, with doctors also considering whether to amputate his other foot.Neto was described as being in a "stable medical state", with Alan Ruschel able to move his limbs after undergoing spinal surgery.

Manchester United and Liverpool kept apart in EFL Cup draw

    martial-cropped_1w1w7l7qdlbg81im2c112rodql.jpg

Manchester United and Liverpool could face each other in the EFL Cup final after they were kept apart in the semi-final draw.

The great rivals are the highest-placed sides left in the competition after Southampton shocked Arsenal on Wednesday to earn a two-legged tie with Jurgen Klopp's side.

United will play Hull City home and away for a place at Wembley.Jose Mourinho's men required a stoppage-time winner from Marcus Rashford earlier this season to see off the Tigers, who reached a first League Cup semi-final in club history by beating Newcastle United on penalties on Tuesday.

Liverpool and Southampton met in this competition last season, with the Anfield side thrashing the Saints 6-1 at St Mary's Stadium, where the first leg in that tie will be held.

The first legs of the ties will be held on the week commencing January 9, with the following games a fortnight later.

Mkhitaryan 'excited' at Man Utd improvement

    henrikhmkhitaryan-cropped_mgn2x68t60sd14uuzjn3b0iy2.jpg

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was left excited by his and the team's display after putting in a Man of the Match performance in Manchester United's EFL Cup quarter-final victory over West Ham.The Armenia star arrived at Old Trafford among much fanfare in the close-season, but has largely found himself on the periphery of the first team at Old Trafford.

However, Mkhitaryan dazzled in last week's Europa League rout of Feyenoord and was once again in impressive form as United swept aside the Hammers 4-1 to seal a semi-final berth, with Hull City awaiting in the last four.

The forward laid on assists for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial, who each scored twice, and was afforded a huge ovation from the home faithful when substituted for Marcus Rashford late in the game.

"I'm excited for the performance, I'm excited for my performance," Mkhitaryan told United's official website. "We've done a good job. "We've tried our best to win because the last game, on Sunday against West Ham, wasn't very good for us when we didn't win. "But I think this time everything worked out and we're very pleased."

The victory was a welcome one for United, who were held 1-1 by the Hammers in the Premier League on Sunday to record their fourth consecutive top-flight draw.

Mkhitaryan was pleased to see United show a more ruthless edge in the final third on this occasion and hopes they can take the momentum into Sunday's trip to Everton.

"The last game we couldn't score our chances, but now we've scored our chances so the difference is that," he added. "This time we've done maybe more than what we have to do and we've scored four goals.

"Maybe we could score more but in the end we stopped on four goals and I think we've done a very good game and the transition from defence to offence was great. "We have to keep working to be ready for the next game against Everton."

OFFICIAL: Kane signs new Tottenham deal

    harry-kane_n7a5xtel2vod1rowgbtmbilh0.jpg

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has signed a new deal at the club that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2022, the club have confirmed. The England international is the club's top scorer this season with six goals despite missing a large chunk of the campaign due to injury.

However, the 23-year-old returned to action in the north London derby against Arsenal and has now grabbed five goals in his last four games.Kane had been linked with a move away from Spurs but now committed his future to the club with a new six-year deal.

"It's amazing. Everyone knows how much I love this team and what I feel for this club," he told the official Tottenham website."To sign another contract is a special feeling. We've got a great, young squad and the club is moving in the right direction.

"I still feel a young man, but I feel I'm at a stage in my life and career where it's time to take that next step."Football is all about working harder every day to progress, to maintain my level and try to get better and better, to keep learning which I will from the gaffer and the players here.

"That's all I'm focused on. I'd be very silly to forget that, that's what's got me where I am now and I think it's even more important now to work even harder if I want to progress and maintain the level I'm at."

No break clause in Southgate's England contract

    1kaq0ut4bfcy719cgjlecc1d4z.jpg

New England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that there is no break clause in his four-year contract.

Southgate took over as Three Lions boss on an interim basis in September following Sam Allardyce's dismissal after he was caught up in a newspaper sting regarding corruption in football. The Football Association confirmed Southgate's full-time appointment on Wednesday in a deal lasting until 2020.

With England's performances at the last two major tournaments falling well below the expected standard, Southgate was quizzed on whether there is an agreement to end his deal after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

But Southgate told a news conference: "There's no break clause, I think it's important [to say] I want to be successful in this role and I'm taking over at a time when the last two tournaments were not as successful as we'd have liked.

"There is big potential. We have to qualify for Russia first - we have about 70 days together to prepare the team and get to the level we want to get to. It's important to look at what we are trying to do over the longer term.

"We have a team, I think, over the next four years that will develop a lot. It's not just short-term results, but long-term with the senior team and junior teams below.""We have a team, I think, over the next four years that will develop a lot. It's not just short-term results, but long-term with the senior team and junior teams below."

The FA's chief executive Martin Glenn stated there was no break clause in Southgate's contract to allow the 46-year-old time to nurture a burgeoning squad."He is a tough negotiator but we had an alignment of interest," he added. "It wasn't something we debated. I wanted to offer a four-year contract.

"We have a young squad, we need time to see that squad developed and nurtured. I think we'll do well in Russia, but in a hypothetical instance if we don't then there's a longer-term project, it's important to have a contract that reflected that."

On his aims as England manager, Southgate said: "In the most simple terms I want an England team that excites the public, that the supporters like watching and are proud of.

"Our aim is to go beyond what we have done in the last couple of tournaments. I have got experience in that as a player and coach in tournament football."

:yes:Manchester United will get back to the top, insists club legend Giggs

    ryan-giggs_1s1xfinuxd5w01qusj7xsoxon7.jpg

Ryan Giggs is convinced that Manchester United will get ‘back to the top’ of English football, but admits the struggles endured since Sir Alex Ferguson departed have come as something of a shock. The Red Devils bid farewell to their iconic manager as Premier League champions, but soon found themselves on a slippery slope.

David Moyes came and went inside 10 months, while Louis van Gaal returned the club to the Champions League and tasted FA Cup success, but was also ushered through the exits after only two years at the helm.

Jose Mourinho, as a proven winner of major honours, was drafted in to rekindle the spark at Old Trafford, but he has also found the going tough and has overseen the club’s worst start to a season since 1990-91.

Giggs concedes a humbling fall from grace has been tough to stomach, but the Welshman remains convinced that United will work their way back to the domestic summit inside the next 18 months.

He told Sport magazine: “There was always going to be a change, because of Sir Alex’s power, his influence in that successful period, and it was just how you combatted that. “Now obviously David Moyes came in, Louis van Gaal came in, and now Mourinho’s come in – so I’m not surprised because the influence Sir Alex had on the team was so strong.

“When you go from champions to like, seventh and then fourth and fifth, it’s not what United fans are used to. But it’s about getting back to the top. Whether that’s this year or next year, I’m sure they’ll do it. “Obviously the longer it goes, the more pressure is on the team.”

Giggs believes positive steps can still be taken this year, despite United sitting eight points adrift of the top four at present and 11 behind table-topping Chelsea. He added: “I think it’s a really open league this year, and I don’t think they’re in a really bad position.

“It’s one of those seasons where people are just going to change their minds all the way through – at the moment Liverpool are on fire, at the start it was City, then it was Tottenham."It’s just a really close league. United would probably hope to be doing better, but they’re definitely not out of it.”

Only a matter of time until Balotelli gets Italy call - Zola

    balotelli-cropped_1nzm2s090ke8u1kbq55e5y9mmp.jpg

Gianfranco Zola thinks it is only a matter of time before Mario Balotelli seals his return to the Italy team.

Balotelli has scored seven goals in nine appearances for Nice in 2016-17, although he has not played since November 6 due to a calf injury.

The former Liverpool forward last played for Italy in the 2014 World Cup, but Zola – who represented the Azzurri between 1991 and 1997 – thinks his international return after two and a half years away is not far away.

Zola told Omnisport: "It seems to me that he is working very well and I wish that he can maintain and sustain that level of performance for much longer."If he does that I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before he is back in the national team."

Italy boss Giampiero Ventura has said he is watching Balotelli and Zola is thrilled the striker, now 26, is managing the mental side of his game."With Balo it has never been a matter of his ability but it has been a matter of how well he can handle himself," added Zola.

"Whether or not he's going to be called into the national team is not down to me - it will be down to Ventura in this case.Liverpool's Karius rules Man Utd out of title race"But I'm delighted that he is finding the balance that allows his qualities to come through."

Ter Stegen can become new Valdes at Barca - Zambrotta

    marcandreterstegen-cropped_dyjs92axmq0l1bp869w8a2zi3.jpg

Marc-Andre ter Stegen can emulate Victor Valdes' distinguished career at Barcelona, says Gianluca Zambrotta.

Ter Stegen made the switch to Camp Nou in 2014, but largely played second fiddle to Claudio Bravo in La Liga during his first two seasons at the club – although he was first choice in the Champions League.

Bravo's departure for Manchester City has seen Ter Stegen become the regular number one, though, and he has faced criticism for a series of high-profile errors during a season in which Barca have struggled to hit top form.

But Zambrotta, who spent two years at Barca between 2006 and 2008, says the Germany international has time to become as influential as Valdes, who won six La Liga titles, two Copas del Rey and three Champions League medals before departing the club in 2014."You can't discuss a goalkeeper like Victor Valdes. He made history for Barcelona and was phenomenal in Spain," he told Omnisport.

"For sure even he [Ter Stegen] can make history as Barcelona are doing great things. He can become [the new Valdes]."Barca's indifferent La Liga form has seen the champions fall six points adrift of Real Madrid in the title race.

Luis Enrique's men face a crucial Clasico contest at home to Madrid on Saturday and Zambrotta says whoever can keep their heads in the pressure cooker of arguably club football's biggest game will emerge victorious."I remember the great emotion and the huge build-up in the week leading to the game," he added.

"The same in the warm-up and during the game itself. The wait is tense. That week is only about the game. Newspapers talk about it endlessly. There is a lot of pressure."

Zambrotta feels the allure of El Clasico has only been heightened by the star quality on show with Barca's Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez coming up against the likes of Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

"It is still a great match. Lately Barcelona and Real Madrid have always faced each other with a squad of extraordinary players," he said. "And we have [Zinedine] Zidane as a manager too, then Ronaldo, just to mention one player at Real.

"On the other side Messi, Suarez and Neymar. A great and beautiful game everybody in the world wants to watch."

Carrick: It would be tough to leave Man Utd

    michael-carrick_b5wqq43k69z310480w4pk6v4f.jpg

Michael Carrick admits he would find it difficult to play for a club other than Manchester United as his contract nears its end.

The 35-year-old's current deal runs out at the end of the season and while Jose Mourinho has suggested the club could offer him another contract, his future remains uncertain.

Carrick has played just three times in the Premier League for the Red Devils this season, but the lack of playing time and clarity over his role at Old Trafford is not weighing heavily on his mind."[Leaving Man Utd] is not something I am looking to do at the minute - it would be very difficult to play somewhere else," he told the Daily Mail."Everyone is different. It depends on circumstance. It depends on a lot of things.

"I have said all along, I am relaxed about [my United future]. It depends if I am playing and if I am playing well enough, if I feel I can contribute, if the manager feels I can contribute.

"There are a lot of things to be decided. I am quite relaxed."The England international is aware of the difficulties of continuing to play at a high level at his age but feels he has adapted his game around those challenges."You just have to understand what you can and what you can't do really," he added.

"At any stage of your career, people have their strengths and what they can't do so well. You just have to put yourself in a position where you can play to your strengths more often than not. You learn that from experience."As long as I am enjoying it, can feel I can contribute and the manager does then great."

:baffled::baffled:Man Utd and Liverpool target Van Dijk can go for £50-60m, says Le Tissier

    virgil-van-dijk-premier-league-manchester-city-v-southampton_1jjj15wbv93je1fuh3ixc0vzsd.jpg

Southampton have Virgil van Dijk tied to a long-term contract but if a rival tabled ‘a £50m or £60m bid’ then they would have little option but to sell, admits club legend Matt Le Tissier.

The Netherlands international is generating plenty of interest ahead of the winter transfer window. The Saints will be reluctant to part with a key man mid-season, and only agreed a six-year deal with Van Dijk back in May.

It could, however, be that the needs of others force their hand in January.Manchester United and Liverpool are among those to have been heavily linked with an imminent approach, and both clubs are expected to bolster their defensive ranks in 2017.

Le Tissier would be disappointed to see an “immense” performer slip through Southampton’s net, but acknowledges that world-class talent cannot be held back and that a big-money bid would make financial and professional sense for the club and player.

He told talkSPORT: “It would be fantastic [if the club refused any bids].“Virgil only signed a new long-term contract recently so the club are in a strong position.“But if somebody comes in with a £50m or £60m bid, can you really stand in the way of the player? That’s the thing you have to consider.

“Sometimes it almost looks like the game is too easy for him.“He looks like a man playing in an Under-14s game, that’s what it looks like at times. He’s just immense. He’s been fantastic for us.”

Van Dijk has made 23 appearances for club and country this season, with the most recent of those seeing him help Southampton into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.
Liverpool and United are also in the last four of that competition, with the Saints due to face the Reds in a two-legged tie in the new year.

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has refused to rule out a return to Real Madrid amid speculation about his future at the Emirates Stadium. The Germany international left Madrid for Arsenal in 2013 and has since developed into a key figure for the Premier League side. His contract with Arsenal is due to expire in June 2018, though, and talks over a renewal have not borne fruit, fuelling speculation he could be on the move.

Would another Clasico win convince the world of Zidane's worth?"A return to Madrid? I am very happy to be playing for a big club like Arsenal, who have some amazing fans who show me a lot of affection," Ozil told Marca."I am enjoying myself in London, but you never know in football... We will see what happens.

"Madrid are a huge club and I played with some fantastic players there. And the Madrid fans are very loyal and still cheer me on. Many of them keep sending me messages asking me to come back."I have nothing but fond memories of my time at Madrid. I had three great years there.”

A return to the Santiago Bernabeu would see the 28-year-old team up with his hero Zinedine Zidane."Zidane used to be my idol. I always watched him play when I was a kid and I wanted to be like him," Ozil added."We play in the same position and he was a point of reference growing up. I was very nervous when I first met him.

"I think he is a great coach. He won the Champions League in his first season, it does not get any bigger than that. I am happy for him because he is a great person and I always believed in him as a coach."
