James not leaving Real Madrid in January, says agent

    james-rodriguez-real-madrid-cultural-copa-del-rey_qw4jx5tf5uxx1px6fcut9225d.png

James Rodriguez will not leave Real Madrid in the January transfer window, according to the Colombia international’s agent Jorge Mendes.

The 25-year-old had been expected to leave the Santiago Bernabeu after being reduced to a bit-part role and admitting he had offers from other teams.James has subsequently been linked with a whole host of clubs including Juventus who have hinted they could move for the playmaker.

However, Mendes has now seemingly ruled out a January exit from the Bernabeu telling AS: “James will not be leaving Madrid in January.”James had previous revealed his frustrations at the Bernabeu and hinted at leaving when speaking after the Club World Cup final against Kashima Antlers.

James had previous revealed his frustrations at the Bernabeu and hinted at leaving when speaking after the Club World Cup final against Kashima Antlers.

“I can't assure I will stay at Real Madrid," he said. "I have offers and seven days left to think about my future.“I am happy in Madrid, but I want to play more. I have a bitter feeling as I wanted to play the final, but I am happy for the title. It's the 15th title of my career.”

James signed for Madrid in 2014 and his current deal runs until 2020 although should he fail to force his way into the Real Madrid starting line-up, it would be little surprise to see him leave in the summer.

Madrid's transfer ban has been reduced recently meaning Zidane's men will be able to sign players when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.

Simeone is 'really loved' at Atletico, says Cerezo

    diego-simeone-atletico-madrid-press-conference_uw8rea9vqjnb16r7dmf7dnbla.jpg

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo is confident head coach Diego Simeone will remain with the club beyond the end of this season.

On the back of last season's agonising penalty shoot-out loss to rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Simeone negotiated down his most recent contract extension at Atletico from 2020 to end in 2018.

Atleti's patchy form in La Liga this term – they lie sixth and nine points off top at the mid-season break – and Simeone's stated desire to coach Inter at some stage is his career has led to mounting speculation that the Argentine could walk away at the end of the current campaign.Nevertheless, Cerezo expects the revised contract to be honoured."Everyone can think and say what they want, but the only certain thing is that he is in Atletico and Atletico is with Cholo [Simeone]," he told AS.

"You have a contract in force and the contacts are in order. In addition, at Atletico when we want someone, we really love him. "Atletico are not half-hearted and we really want Cholo. Let the coach and the team work to make a great season."

Atleti will face Las Palmas in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey and are through to face Bayer Leverkusen in the same stage of the Champions League after topping a group featuring Bayern Munich."It has not been a spectacular start, but the recovery line will take us where we want to be," Cerezo said. "In the Champions League our performance has been impressive.

"We have not even reached the middle of the season. There is a lot left and teams have many ups and downs and are going through bad times. "We have already passed our [bad spell]. You have to recover those lost points."

Star forward Antoine Griezmann is without a La Liga goal since October but Cerezo is backing the France international to turn his form around "Nothing has happened to him," he added. "The players have good and bad spells and now they are in bad shape.

"But the goals will come and they will recover their good streak. "The great players need the goals and to have great matches, and Griezmann will have them."

Watford 1-1 Crystal Palace: Benteke rues missed penalty as Allardyce starts with draw

    watford-crystal-palace_mrj9q4827tnb1jq9x3eyruvxk.jpg

Sam Allardyce was left frustrated on his Crystal Palace debut as Troy Deeney's second-half penalty earned Watford a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road on Monday.
Palace parted ways with Alan Pardew last week after a poor run of form left the Eagles just a point above the relegation zone.

Allardyce was consequently confirmed as his replacement marking a return to management following his dismissal as England boss after just 67 days after he was caught on camera reportedly claiming to give advice on how to circumvent third-party ownership rules as part of an undercover newspaper sting.

His return to the dugout started well with Palace rewarded for a lively opening when Yohan Cabaye opened the scoring following good work from Andros Townsend.

However, the smile was wiped off Allardyce's face when Christian Benteke wasted the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot with a tame effort that was easily saved by Heurelho Gomes.

And Palace ultimately paid the penalty for that miss when Deeney converted a spot-kick of his own for his 100th Watford goal in the second half.

Allardyce will take plenty of positives from the performance, but Palace remain in a perilous position, while Watford, at least for now, move 10th.Watford lost Daryl Janmaat and Valon Behrami to injury inside 15 minutes and Cabaye almost inflicted more misery when he drilled wide from 20 yards.

But the Frenchman was on target in the 26th minute. Andros Townsend shook off his marker and slipped in a sublime througball to Cabaye, who brilliantly slotted past Gomes into the bottom-left corner.

Palace had a gilt-edged chance to double the lead when Benteke was clattered in the area by Gomes after a poor backpass from Sebastian Prodl, leaving referee Mark Clattenburg little alternative but to award the penalty.

Benteke took the responsibility himself, but his effort was weak and Gomes - making his 100th league appearance for the Hornets - made amends with a simple save low to his left.

Watford had offered little in the first half, but made an encouraging start after the break and Odion Ighalo almost levelled the scoring when he aimed just wide from a narrow angle after running on to a long ball.

Walter Mazzarri's men continued to push for an equaliser and were rewarded a spot-kick of their own when Damien Delaney tugged Prodl to ground at a corner.
Deeney assumed responsibility from 12 yards and smashed his effort down the middle to celebrate his landmark strike almost three months after his last Premier League goal on October 1.

Adlene Guedioura tested Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey late on with a powerful long-range strike after a sublime piece of skill as Watford went in search of the win, but the Welshman was not overly worried by the midfielder's attempt and the match ended all square.

Hazard scores 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea against Bournemouth

    hd-eden-hazard-chelsea_133u3mvtuhf6p1v0kd3tmwzij8.jpg

Eden Hazard scored his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea against Bournemouth on Monday. The Belgium international found the back of the net from the penalty spot after Simon Francis fouled him inside the box after 49 minutes.

Hazard became the sixth player in Chelsea's history to score 50 goals in the Premier League after Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Gianfranco Zola and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The goal gave Chelsea a 2-0 lead over Bournemouth at the time after Pedro opened the scoring for the league leaders.Hazard was filling in for Diego Costa in a forward role at Stamford Bridge due to the Spain forward's suspension.

Arsenal 1-0 West Brom: Giroud leaves it late as Gunners pick up vital win

    olivier-giroud-premier-league-arsenal-v-west-brom-261216_1zf9z8sngxm11gorjdk5llce9.jpg

Olivier Giroud dragged Arsenal back to winning ways as his 86th-minute header snatched a 1-0 win over West Brom at Emirates Stadium.Tony Pulis' visitors held Arsene Wenger's men at arm's length during a dour first period on Monday but were indebted to goalkeeper Ben Foster after the interval.

The 33-year-old marked a fresh contract extension with West Brom by making impressive stops from Giroud, Alex Iwobi and Alexis Sanchez, while the latter also rattled the post.

It meant Arsenal left it late to maintain their record of scoring in each of their 21 Premier League encounters with Albion - who ultimately rued Claudio Yacob failing to punish Petr Cech's misjudgement at a 70th-minute corner - as Giroud grappled with Gareth McAuley to steer a fine header over Foster from Mesut Ozil's searching cross.

The late winner provided a welcome dose of seasonal goodwill for Wenger at the final whistle, something that had been lacking from sections of the Arsenal faithful on the back of consecutive defeats to Everton and Manchester City.

In-form West Brom winger Matt Phillips got back to make a vital challenge on Hector Bellerin inside the visitors' penalty area early on and Ozil - on his 100th Premier League appearance for Arsenal - had a ninth-minute shot blocked.Arsenal centre-back Gabriel was fortunate to escape censure for leaping into a challenge on Phillips, curtailing a rare early attack for West Brom.

Sanchez, operating from the left flank as Giroud came in for the injured Theo Walcott to lead the line, arced a shot narrowly past the far post but Arsenal were struggling for clear chances as their opponents settled comfortably into the game.

Cech held a glancing header from Nacer Chadli before his opposite number Foster denied Sanchez and a jinking Iwobi lifted one over.Iwobi had an attempt blocked at close quarters by Yacob as Arsenal applied more sustained pressure before half-time but the deadlock remained intact at the interval.

Four minutes into the second period, Foster produced his best work of the match - getting down to Iwobi's low volley and thwarting Sanchez on the follow-up. From the resulting corner, Sanchez barrelled into room on the edge of the six-yard box but crashed his shot against the right-hand upright.

The irrepressible Chile star appeared Arsenal's most likely source of a breakthrough and touched the ball cleverly around Chris Brunt to fizz a 20-yard drive over in the 56th minute.

Giroud was the next man to be frustrated by Foster when the goalkeeper propped out a boot at the end of an attack that began when Fletcher sold Yacob short inside his own half.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder had a header deflected behind from a Phillips corner and the subsequent set-play saw Cech's normally assured handling desert him, with Yacob wastefully unable to capitalise.

Wenger sent on Lucas Perez in an attempt to unlock West Brom and the Spanish forward cut the ball across the six-yard box, where Foster did enough to put Giroud off.

But the France international finally got the better of West Brom's star performer to ensure the deficit to leaders Chelsea remains at nine points.

Leicester City 0-2 Everton: Mirallas & Lukaku see off champions

    kevin-mirallas-premier-league-leicester-v-everton-261216_14glpngd2mej41a37oimlqu8bh.jpg

Leicester City's terrible run in Boxing Day Premier League fixtures continued as some calamitous defending contributed to a 2-0 victory for Everton.

Kevin Mirallas put Ronald Koeman's side ahead 51 minutes into a tightly contested but rather tepid encounter at the King Power Stadium, with slack defending from Wes Morgan and Marcin Wasilewski allowing the Belgian to net a third goal in his last three games against the champions. And the visitors put the match beyond all doubt in second-half stoppage time when Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead to wrap up the points.

Leicester, who have not won a Boxing Day match in the top-flight since 1998, had lost just one league game at home in 2016 prior to Monday's clash, but they failed to respond to going behind against an Everton side that had been defeated in their last four away fixtures.

Claudio Ranieri's side, without a plethora of key players, had their chances in a late glut of pressure, substitute Leonardo Ulloa guilty of squandering a fantastic opportunity shortly after coming on, which was ultimately punished by Lukaku's goal. The defeat leaves Leicester planted firmly in a scrap for survival as the half-way mark of the season approaches, while Everton move back into the top seven.

Leicester placed masks bearing Jamie Vardy's face on approximately 30,000 seats to protest the striker's suspension for a dubious red card picked up against Stoke City, and his absence was felt in a scrappy opening, with the hosts struggling to find space against Everton's three-man defence.

When the Foxes did fashion a 10th-minute opening, Daniel Amartey - fresh from netting his maiden Leicester goal last time out - failed to trouble Joel Robles with a low strike.

Demarai Gray, in for Riyad Mahrez, was the next to try his luck from range with a venomous effort that flashed wide of the left-hand upright.Ashley Williams then made a vital last-ditch tackle on Islam Slimani as Everton managed to weather a spell of pressure from the champions.

The visitors struggled to muster their own openings, but could well have taken the lead before the interval with Ramiro Funes Mori heading over from six yards, before Kevin Mirallas narrowly failed to prod home Leighton Baines' cross. However, Leicester only had themselves to blame when they fell behind six minutes after the restart.

Neither Morgan nor Wasilewski was alert to Mirallas' run from Robles' long punt and the Belgium winger proceeded to squeeze a deflected finish past Kasper Schmeichel.

Mahrez and Ulloa were soon brought on and the latter should have restored parity with his first touch, only for the Argentine striker to direct his header straight at Robles.Koeman responded with changes of his own, Tom Davies and Ross Barkley coming on as Everton aimed to withstand the Leicester pressure.

And Barkley played a key part in Everton's second as, moments after Idrissa Gueye had squandered a gilt-edged chance from point-blank range, his pass freed Lukaku, who outmuscled Morgan before driving towards goal and slotting a low finish into the bottom-left corner as the Toffees rebounded from the last-gasp defeat to rivals Liverpool last time out.

:love:Manchester United 3-1 Sunderland: Mkhitaryan magic seals unhappy Moyes return

    mkhitaryan-manchester-united_pso47pfz39uy1mxbn6nupzrgb.jpg

Manchester United's late show saw them surge past Sunderland 3-1 in their Premier League clash on Boxing Day, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan netting a superb goal.Blind combined with Ibrahimovic in the first half to net the opener, charging into the box and finishing low into the bottom corner.

It was the latter who sealed all three points after being teed up by Paul Pogba to score a deserved goal as the clock ticked down.Jordan Pickford had been instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable but was powerless to prevent Mkhitaryan's sublime back-heel flick.

Blind struck his first top-flight goal since September 2015 before two more in the final eight minutes secured a fourth league win in a row for the home side and ensure that Moyes' return to Old Trafford was a disappointing one.

United, who were without captain Wayne Rooney due to a knock sustained in training, have begun to build some momentum under Jose Mourinho, but were sluggish and short on inspiration in a tepid opening half-hour.

Indeed, it was Victor Anichebe who missed the best chance of the half when he mishit a shot from only six yards out, before Blind at last broke the deadlock with an accurate finish.

Patrick van Aanholt brought a good save from David de Gea with a well-struck free-kick as Sunderland began to grow in confidence after some early United dominance, though the home side felt they should have had a penalty when Juan Mata was shouldered to the ground by Lamine Kone.

Paul Pogba's curling effort from the edge of the area was deflected onto the outside of Pickford's left-hand post, but Sunderland wasted their best chance of the half when Anichebe scuffed a shot against the leg of De Gea after a defensive mix-up left him in space only six yards from goal.Pogba flashed another dipping shot over the crossbar, but United found the breakthrough six minutes before half-time through an unlikely source.

Ibrahimovic collected the ball to the right of the Sunderland area and slid a pass into the run of Blind, who drilled a fine left-footed strike across Pickford's goal and into the bottom corner.

It could have been worse for the visitors before the break but for Pickford, who reacted well to keep out Pogba's clever effort following a good United move before he dived low to his right to parry Mata's free-kick.

United stepped up the pressure after half-time as they looked for a second, with Ibrahimovic's poor pass to Pogba halting one good opportunity before the France international headed narrowly over the crossbar from Antonio Valencia's cross.

Ibrahimovic blasted over from another good opening and the Swede was denied by a superb save from Pickford moments later, as Mourinho introduced Mkhitaryan from the bench for his first appearance since the win over Tottenham on December 11.

The match at last opened up in the closing 20 minutes as Sunderland began to chase an equaliser with earnest, but consistently poor service to Jermain Defoe in attack meant chances were at a premium.

With 82 minutes gone, United at last made certain of the points. Pogba pounced on some loose play from Didier Ndong on the halfway line and sent Ibrahimovic through on goal, where he had the time and space to slot the ball past Pickford.

And four minutes later, Mkhitaryan produced the game's real moment of magic, steering an acrobatic backheel into the corner from 12 yards from an Ibrahimovic cross - although the Armenia star should have been flagged offside.

Borini chested the ball down before volleying past the static De Gea in sublime style in injury time, but there was little else to cheer for the visiting fans, or indeed Moyes.

Swansea 1-4 West Ham: Hammers extend unbeaten run to heap more misery on lowly Swans

    hd-andre-ayew-west-ham_1kngo11tfaedr1peb1e2bhir2m.jpg

Andre Ayew opened his West Ham account by scoring against his former club as they piled further pressure on Swansea City manager Bob Bradley with a 4-1 Premier League win at the Liberty Stadium.Ayew, who traded south Wales for east London in August, had failed to find the net in 10 games for West Ham going into Monday's meeting.

But he ended his wait at his old stomping ground on Boxing Day with a simple close-range finish after Lukasz Fabianski had inexplicably parried an Andy Carroll header into his path, giving West Ham a 13th-minute lead.

West Ham were in control throughout the first half and five minutes into the second period they made it 2-0 as Winston Reid headed home at the near post from a corner.

The visitors were content to play on the counter-attack and preserve their two-goal advantage and, though West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph pulled off a string of fine saves, Swansea could not prevent a seventh defeat in 11 games since Bradley took over in October.

Gloss was added to the scoreline when Michail Antonio diverted Havard Nordtveit's drive beyond Fabianski before Fernando Llorente and Carroll traded late goals.

West Ham - who extended their unbeaten run in the league to four games - are now eight points clear of the bottom three, whereas Swansea remain four adrift of safety in second bottom. It took 10 minutes for Swansea to craft the first opportunity of the contest, Borja Baston curling well wide of the goal after good work from Jack Cork.

Perhaps jolted into life by that escape, West Ham immediately responded and broke the deadlock courtesy of a helping hand from Fabianski.

Mark Noble found Carroll with a high diagonal ball and, although Cheikhou Kouyate could not connect with his downward header, Fabianski palmed it straight to Ayew to tap in and break his West Ham duck.

Antonio could have made it 2-0 had he got on the end of an Ayew flick-on - though he appeared to have been offside - and Dimitri Payet tested Fabianski with a well-hit low drive.

Randolph was finally tested in the 41st minute, diving low to his left to turn a Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick behind, before Cork looped a header over in first-half stoppage time.

Swansea's task was made even harder after the restart as they paid the price for more sloppy defending, Reid escaping his marker and outmuscling two defenders to nod Payet's delivery into the bottom-left corner.

Cork drew Randolph into another diving save with a powerful long-range effort, and the shot-stopper showcased more quick reflexes to keep out Wayne Routledge's point-blank header.

Sigurdsson was similarly frustrated by Randolph after he had been teed up by Llorente, but any hope of a comeback was extinguished when Antonio turned in from close range after Edimilson Fernandes had been initially denied by Fabianski.

Llorente smartly turned home from Nathan Dyer's pull back to give Swansea something to cheer about, but Carroll immediately responded by emphatically lashing in Sofiane Feghouli's cross

Chelsea 3-0 Bournemouth: Hazard inspires Blues to record-breaking 12th straight league win

    hd-chelsea-bournemouth_1nepduqdsugis1jyms7snimo82.jpg

Chelsea claimed a club-record 12th successive top-flight victory with a 3-0 home triumph over Bournemouth to continue their Premier League title charge on Monday.

Antonio Conte's league leaders - who put the pressure back on the chasing pack - shrugged off the absence of suspended talisman Diego Costa, with replacement Pedro's stunning first-half goal setting them on their way.

The Cherries, who won at Stamford Bridge last season, were a match for their high-flying hosts in the first half but saw Jack Wilshere twice denied from good positions.

And the hosts, who have won the title on each of the previous four occasions they have topped the table at Christmas, extended their lead in the 49th minute courtesy of Eden Hazard's penalty.

Eddie Howe's side dug in to limit the damage and were not without chances of their own, but Pedro struck again in stoppage time to add some gloss to the scoreline.

The Blues are, temporarily at least, nine points clear at the summit, though that will be cut if Manchester City, who face Hull City later on Monday, or Liverpool triumph in their next fixtures. With Costa and N'Golo Kante banned, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas filled in as Michy Batshuayi was again left on the bench.

It was a quick-thinking Fabregas who lofted a free-kick into the path of Pedro, forcing Simon Francis to make a timely intervention inside the opening five minutes.
Hazard called Artur Boruc into action after quarter of an hour with a low drive that was always well within the goalkeeper's reach.

The hosts continued to look the more threatening and Pedro cut in from the left before firing wide with a swerving effort across the face of goal.

The breakthrough came at the end of a well-worked move, finished by Pedro when he curled a superb strike over Boruc from the edge of the box for his fourth goal in the last five matches at Stamford Bridge.

Bournemouth produced a spirited response and Thibaut Courtouis had to make a smart near-post save to deny Wilshere a prompt leveller. The Arsenal loanee also saw a volley deflected wide on the half-hour mark, while Fabregas lifted a set-piece just over the crossbar at the other end.

Conte was afforded a more restful second half after Francis felled Hazard in the box and the Belgian put the spot-kick away for his 50th Premier League goal.A Victor Moses half-volley flashed wide of Boruc's right-hand upright as Chelsea sought to put the game beyond Bournemouth's reach.

It was not all good news for the west Londoners, though, as Pedro's yellow card earned him a suspension for the New Year's Day visit of Stoke City.Indeed, they could have been in for a nervy final 18 minutes had Courtois not made a fine stop from Benik Afobe after the substitute went through one-on-one.

But that was as close as Howe's charges came to setting up a grandstand finish, with Chelsea ending 2016 on a high as Pedro's deflected effort rounded off a swift counter-attack and made it 3-0.

The stat that proves Ibra and Pogba are the best partnership in the Premier League

    pogba-ibrahimovic-manchester-united_ljyrrqsy49qk1p0f5kif3m0z4.jpg

Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's blossoming partnership is driving Manchester United up the table, with the pair again combining in the 3-1 win over Sunderland.

The Frenchman assisted his fellow summer signing's late strike to make safe all three points, making all three of his assists in the Premier League so far for the Swede.

It is their devastating understanding that resulted in Ibrahimovic's 41st career strike in the month of December since 2004 when he played for Juventus, making the month the most profitable for the striker.

Arsenal needed something special for crucial win - Wenger

    olivier-giroud-cropped_12zt2euzfztyi1j4kgvxhyycgc.jpg

Arsene Wenger acknowledged that Arsenal needed "something special" as they saw off West Brom 1-0 on Boxing Day, adding that a win was crucial following two defeats.

The Gunners were largely dominant against Tony Pulis' men at Emirates Stadium, but the Baggies defence remained resolute. However, Arsenal - who had lost their previous two Premier League matches 2-1 - eventually made the breakthrough with four minutes remaining when Olivier Giroud expertly headed home Mesut Ozil's brilliant cross.

His winner left Wenger pleased with the way his side bided their time to bring down the visitors, with the manager stating how crucial it was to regain momentum with all three points.

"In the end we had to be patient against a well-organised West Brom side," Wenger told reporters."They were tenacious, well-organised and we needed to keep patient and not make a defensive mistake. When you do not score early, you cannot rush.

"We had a high level of possession, plenty of shots at goal and we needed something special in the end. It was a special cross and a special header."We knew we had to win after two disappointing defeats."Match-winner Giroud credited Ozil for his brilliant assist, while emphasising the importance of returning to winning ways.

"It was a very good cross from Mesut Ozil and I just tried to finish the job," Giroud told reporters."We were strong together, a strong mentality, it was important to win and we showed a lot of strength.

"At home you have to win and even more so after two disappointing results so it was a very important game, we needed the three points. It is a big relief."

'Sheer filth!' - Mkhitaryan's backheel wonderstrike gobsmacks world

    hd-mkhitaryan_cydh22dg1rfw1t4raj29d29js.jpg

Although it should have been ruled out for offside, few could deny the sheer brilliance of Henrikh Mkhitaryan's stupendous scorpion kick goal against Sunderland for some Boxing Day magic.

The Armenia international converted late on as Manchester United downed Sunderland 3-1 at Old Trafford to close the gap on those above them in the race for a top-four Premier League finish.

And Twitter went into a frenzy after witnessing Mkhitaryan's special strike which capped off yet another impressive performance from the attacking midfielder of late.

Barcelona star Neymar has downplayed the importance of the Ballon d'Or and is adamant it would not be a problem for him if he never wins it.

The Brazil international had to settle for fifth place in the 2016 award, with Cristiano Ronaldo beating Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to scoop the gong.
Neymar, however, has stressed he will not lose any sleep over whether he will ever lift the trophy.

"I am very happy in Barcelona, at this team and with the life I have," the 24-year-old told the official La Liga website."Of course, it is my goal to win the Ballon d'Or, but I am not going to kill myself for it.

"I want to be happy and I am happy here at Barcelona. It is not a problem if I do not win the Ballon d'Or. "I do not play football to win the Ballon d'Or. I play football to be happy, because I love it and want to play football.

"Winning the Ballon d'Or is the consequence of your work. Unfortunately, only one person can win it and Leo Messi is the best."

:yes:Mourinho hails Mkhitaryan: He feels the love of Old Trafford now

Jose Mourinho believes Henrikh Mkhitaryan is beginning to hit top form for Manchester United thanks to the support of the fans at Old Trafford.

The Armenia international came off the bench to score a stunning third goal in Monday's 3-1 win over Sunderland in his first appearance since picking up an injury in the 1-0 win over Tottenham on December 11.

Mkhitaryan brought the home fans to their feet as he produced an acrobatic back-heel to turn in Ibrahimovic's cross and secure United's win, although he was fortunate not to have been flagged offside.

It was the 27-year-old's third goal in as many games and Mourinho says he is thriving now that he has the backing of the club's supporters."All his career he scored beautiful goals," he told MUTV. "At this moment, it's goals, but also defensive work, creativity.

"I'm so happy that he came back after this injury with his happiness, and he's feeling that Old Trafford loves him. That's a very important feeling for him."

Defender Daley Blind, who opened the scoring before Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan struck late on, added: "Mkhi is a great player and it's a great finish. I'm happy that I can play with him."

United's win stretches their recent run to five consecutive victories and 11 games without defeat in all competitions.

Hull City 0-3 Manchester City: Guardiola's men make late surge for win

Quickfire goals from Yaya Toure and Kelechi Iheanacho helped inspire Manchester City to a hard-fought 3-0 Premier League success over a spirited Hull City on Boxing Day.

With Chelsea racking up a club-record 12th consecutive league victory courtesy of a 3-0 success over Bournemouth earlier on Monday, Pep Guardiola’s side came into this meeting at the KCOM Stadium 10 points behind the leaders.

Guardiola, unfamiliar with football over the festive period during his spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, had his players in for training on Christmas Day and they were presented with the chance for the opening goal in the 72nd minute when Andrew Robertson recklessly felled Raheem Sterling in the area and Toure duly converted the penalty.

That indiscretion undid all the good work Hull had put in up until that stage and the lead was doubled six minutes later as Iheanacho tapped in following good work from Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.Harshly, it was 3-0 in stoppage time when Sterling jinked his way into the area before seeing his cross diverted home by Hull defender Curtis Davies.

Hull - now with one win in 16 league games - can take heart from a largely spirited display that included Michael Dawson seeing a header cleared off the line at 0-0, but Mike Phelan’s men remain rooted to the foot of the table.

Victory means Guardiola’s side go second, two points ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal - the former of whom they visit on New Year's Eve - while Hull’s next assignment is a home clash with Everton on Friday.

The visitors dominated possession in the early stages and Toure saw a free-kick tipped behind by David Marshall, before John Stones suffered a knee injury, later announced as not serious, and had to be replaced by Aleksandar Kolarov.Silva brought a comfortable save from Marshall with a low shot while, at the other end, Jake Livermore's powerful effort was straight at Claudio Bravo.

Harry Maguire hooked Tom Huddlestone's free-kick over the crossbar with Bravo stranded as Hull began the second period in encouraging fashion. That positivity was almost punctured, though, as De Bruyne's disguised effort from 20 yards crashed into the base of Marshall's right-hand post.

Hull continued to pose a threat from set-pieces with Robert Snodgrass' dangerous free-kick bundled behind and, from the resulting corner, Bacary Sagna had to clear off the line from Dawson's header with Bravo caught in no-man's land.

And Sagna's intervention was given added significance as the game entered its final 20 minutes, Robertson clumsily bringing down Sterling which allowed Toure to calmly score his third of the season. With Hull deflated, De Bruyne slipped in Silva, whose square ball laid the second on a plate for Iheanacho to tap home.

To compound Hull's misery, Davies diverted Sterling's low cross into his own net with the final act as Guardiola's men secured a third straight win.
