Everton 3-0 Southampton: Late flurry gives Koeman victory against old club

    everton-southampton-enner-valencia_1ugcg7f81p1fp1c2bjh5j523q4.jpg

Everton started 2017 in superb fashion as three quick-fire second-half strikes secured a 3-0 Premier League victory over Ronald Koeman's former club Southampton.

Koeman's side were desperate to return to winning ways following their frustrating draw with lowly Hull City last time out, but it looked as though Claude Puel's men would take a share of the spoils at Goodison Park.

However, though Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond had gone close for Southampton, the hosts took a deserved lead through substitute Enner Valencia's first Everton goal 73 minutes into a scrappy encounter. And Southampton's resilience swiftly crumbled, Leighton Baines slotting home from the penalty spot before Romelu Lukaku hammered in a thunderous third late on.

The defeat represents a third straight loss for Southampton, while Koeman can reflect on a job well done over the festive period with Everton having won three of their past five games.Neither side managed to settle in a scrappy opening in which injuries to Cedric Soares and Dominic Calvert-Lewin disrupted play.

Everton were the first to muster an attempt on goal with Ross Barkley's rasping strike drawing a smart stop from Fraser Forster.Forster was called into action again to prevent Lukaku's effort finding the target as Everton built momentum.

But it was Saints that thought they had the lead against the run of play, only for Rodriguez's goal to be correctly ruled out for offside, while the forward had also handballed when bundling the ball over the line.

Rodriguez went close again, but - after initially engineering space with some sublime footwork - he blazed over from the edge of the area.Southampton were almost made to pay for that miss shortly before the break, but Kevin Mirallas was unable to find the top-left corner at the culmination of a swift counter-attack.

Everton started sluggishly after the restart and Koeman wasted little time in making a change, introducing Valencia in place of the ineffective Aaron Lennon. That change sparked the hosts into life and Lukaku should have done better after he burst clear of Southampton's defence, only to drag his strike wide.

Puel's side continued to threaten on the counter, though, and Redmond would have put the visitors ahead if not for a fine save from Joel Robles.Redmond was made to regret that miss soon after - Valencia marking a fantastic cameo with his maiden Everton goal, tucking home from close-range after Forster had saved Lukaku's header.

Valencia then played a key part in Everton's second, drawing a clumsy foul from Maya Yoshida inside Southampton's area and Baines coolly converted the spot-kick by sending Forster the wrong way.

And there was still time for the Toffees to put further gloss on the scoreline. Baines won the ball back with a sliding tackle and Tom Davies - making his full league debut - picked up the loose ball to slip in Lukaku, who hammered emphatically past Forster with his right foot to wrap up the points.

Sunderland 2-2 Liverpool: Defoe denies Reds

    defoe_1s65y5plz9tqr1tlsd0ptnw3dn.jpg

Liverpool failed to make significant inroads into Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League table after two Jermain Defoe penalties earned Sunderland a point in an absorbing 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Having cancelled out Daniel Sturridge's opener, the former England striker was again on target from 12 yards after Sadio Mane was penalised for handball having earlier restored Liverpool's lead. And Defoe may feel it should have been a hat-trick of spot-kicks, with Emre Can having gone unpunished for an earlier handball in the box.

Mane looked to have snatched the three points when a loose Papy Djilobodji header presented him with a tap-in after 72 minutes, but it was his arm that stretched out of the Liverpool wall from a Sebastian Larsson free-kick to gift Sunderland the equaliser. The result leaves Liverpool five points adrift of Chelsea, who have a game in hand, while Sunderland are one point adrift of safety.

One point of concern for Liverpool will be that Sturridge, making his first start since mid-October, limped from the field following a Djilobodji challenge 10 minutes from time.

Defoe’s deflected low drive called former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet into action for the first time in the sixth minute as the hosts showed some promising early signs after their Burnley horror show on Saturday, but Liverpool have scored more goals than any other side in the Premier League this season and the threat at the other end was soon evident.

Vito Mannone got down well to his right to keep out Sturridge, while Georginio Wijnaldum’s curling effort moments later needed palming over the crossbar.

Former Everton man Jack Rodwell has not been on a winning Sunderland side in any of his 33 league starts for the club but was at the centre of much of the early action, forcing Mignolet into another diving save before being booked for a rash challenge on Can.

Sturridge was denied again by Mannone but ensured it was a case of third time lucky when he reacted quickest to Dejan Lovren’s scuffed volley from a corner, rising to head the bouncing ball over the Italian keeper and into the net from close range.

Liverpool’s lead lasted just six minutes, though, with Defoe tucking a penalty inside the left-hand post after Didier Ndong was brought down by a combination of Wijnaldum and Ragnar Klavan in the box.

Defoe then squandered an opportunity to put the home side in front when he failed to navigate a way around Mignolet after being sent through on goal, and Fabio Borini’s attempts to pick up the pieces amounted to a poor strike that went well wide.Another two Sturridge shots from range kept Mannone busy before the break, but goalscoring opportunities were in short supply early in the second half.

Mane failed to climb high enough when an inviting cross was sent into the box in the 56th minute, before Sunderland saw calls for another penalty ignored. Can's arm appeared to make clear contact with the ball in the box, but referee Anthony Taylor waved play on.

It looked set to be particularly costly when Mane put Liverpool back in front, but Defoe once again showed typical composure from the spot to secure a hugely valuable point.

:love:West Ham 0-2 Manchester United: Red Devils continue winning streak

    jose-mourinho-manchester-united-31122016_17g7ufdywt9861ll02mof68jpk.jpg

Manchester United stretched their winning run in the Premier League to six matches after Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic secured a 2-0 victory at 10-man West Ham on Monday.

Spain international Mata struck midway through the second half at London Stadium to break the valiant resistance of Slaven Bilic's side, who played for 75 minutes a man down, before Ibrahimovic blasted in a controversial second in the closing stages.

West Ham had lost none of their previous four league meetings with United but they were dealt a big blow on 15 minutes when Sofiane Feghouli, on his first start in England's top flight, was sent off for a late tackle on Phil Jones.

United struggled to carve out many meaningful chances despite their numerical advantage - although Darren Randolph made one stunning save to deny Antonio Valencia in the first half - and the Hammers spurned a great chance to take the lead when Michail Antonio shot straight at David de Gea when clean through one-on-one.Mata steered in a fine finish only three minutes later to compound Antonio's frustrations before Ibrahimovic secured maximum points for United, who are back to within a point of fourth-place Arsenal, having played a game more.

An encouraging start from West Ham was brought to a halt on 15 minutes when Feghouli was shown a straight red card after crunching into Jones in a 50-50 challenge close to United's area.

Referee Mike Dean gave himself time to consider before brandishing a red card that incensed the home fans and Bilic on the touchline, although the way Feghouli jumped off the turf certainly made the challenge look careless.

United failed to muster a shot in the first half hour despite their advantage, but they contrived to miss a glorious chance to take the lead 10 minutes before the break.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan turned Ibrahimovic's cross back towards the near post from the right and Randolph somehow clawed Valencia's effort from point-blank range off the line before Jesse Lingard inexplicably hit the post with the rebound.

West Ham looked a threat when they broke forward and De Gea was forced to tip Manuel Lanzini's curling effort from 20 yards away from the top corner just before half-time.

Mourinho made an attacking change for the second half, introducing Mata for full-back Matteo Darmian, and West Ham were perhaps fortunate not to concede a further advantage to the visitors when Cheikhou Kouyate escaped a card for a two-footed challenge on Mkhitaryan.

Chances remained scarce but Antonio wasted a glorious opportunity for the home side when he shot straight at De Gea after being played clean through on goal by Lanzini.

Just three minutes later, that miss was punished with aplomb. Marcus Rashford surged into the penalty area before cutting back onto his right foot and teeing up fellow substitute Mata, who curled a first-time shot beyond Randolph's left hand and into the top corner.

Paul Pogba fired a good opening wide and a Rashford shot almost squirmed through Randolph's grasp and over the line, but United made certain of the points 13 minutes from the end following another decision that left the home fan's irate.

Ander Herrera's pass fell to the feet of Ibrahimovic just inside the West Ham area and he spun and lashed the ball low into the net, with the officials failing to spot that the Swede had strayed offside.

Manchester City 2-1 Burnley: Aguero saves 10-man City

    sagna-man-city_1tfbhu43na0ls1w8jbfzs1h0cd.jpg

Substitute Sergio Aguero proved Manchester City's hero as they overcame Burnley in a tense 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium, despite playing almost an hour with 10 men.

The Argentinian striker - surprisingly dropped to the bench for City's second game in 48 hours after their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool - was introduced as a second-half replacement for Kelechi Iheanacho and subsequently proved the match-winner, after stand-in captain Fernandinho had been sent off.

The Brazilian jumped in with a two-footed scissor motion to challenge Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the 32nd minute and, despite appearing to get a touch on the ball, was shown a straight red by referee Lee Mason.

City kept their cool, though, and two goals in the space of four minutes from Gael Clichy and Aguero got their title bid back on track - much to the clear relief of Pep Guardiola.

Burnley set up a tense finale when Ben Mee fired home after a goalmouth scramble, but City held on for a win that sends them up to third, though Arsenal and Tottenham could yet displace them when they play on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

Defeat at Anfield on Saturday had left City 10 points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea, meaning Guardiola’s side could ill afford anything other than three points.City controlled the first half but were wasteful for long spells.

Iheanacho - named ahead of Aguero after the Argentina man failed to touch the ball in the opposition penalty area against Liverpool - had an opportunity to repay Guardiola's faith in the seventh minute following an error from Mee, but Tom Heaton raced off his line to deny the striker and then Raheem Sterling on the follow-up.Iheanacho had another attempt deflected wide before the busy Heaton got down to his left to turn a curling 18-yard effort from Yaya Toure behind.

Jesus Navas, picked ahead of David Silva as one of four city changes, struggled to provide quality deliveries from the right and when one of his crosses ricocheted to the feet of Iheanacho, the Nigeria international was unable to get his shot away.
City's task was made harder when Mason judged Fernandinho's lunging, two-footed challenge on Gudmundsson to be worthy of a red card – the Brazilian's third in his last six outings in all competitions.

Guardiola urged the home faithful to get behind their team as he returned to the dugout for the second half, and he gave them something to cheer about when he replaced Iheanacho and Navas with Aguero and Silva.

City maintained a composed, measured approach and, after Stephen Ward had produced an excellent tackle to deny Aguero a glorious shooting opportunity, they finally made the breakthrough after 58 minutes.Clichy shifted the ball away from Scott Arfield and drilled a brilliant right-footed finish across Heaton and into the bottom corner.

Four minutes later, City doubled their lead. Heaton rushed out and blocked Sterling, who tripped as he looked to round the goalkeeper, but the loose ball was sent into the back of the net with the aid of the post from an acute angle by Aguero.

Burnley managed to pull one back with 20 minutes remaining when Claudio Bravo failed to deal with Michael Keane's near-post flick-on from a corner and Mee slammed home the rebound off the underside of the crossbar.

In the aftermath, Bacary Sagna was only shown a yellow card despite appearing to kick out at George Boyd as he attempted to take the ball back to the centre spot.
Substitute Sam Vokes' mishit volley was tipped behind by a backpedalling Bravo in stoppage time, as City saw out the win to spark animated celebrations on the bench from Guardiola at the final whistle.

:yes:Mourinho warned selling Martial could be another De Bruyne mistake

    anthony-martial-manchester-united-fenerbahce-europa-league_14p7gummt5r9y1awm4hbvkc98h.jpg

Jose Mourinho would be making a mistake similar to that which saw Kevin De Bruyne leave Chelsea if he decides to allow Anthony Martial to leave Manchester United, Jamie Redknapp has warned. The France international forward has been heavily linked with a January move to Sevilla after slipping down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Martial’s agent has fanned the transfer flames by admitting that a proposal from Spain will be studied "in detail".Redknapp, though, believes both the player and United could live to regret their decision if a La Liga switch is pushed through.

Mourinho has seen the sale of promising talent come back to haunt him in the past, with Belgium international De Bruyne maturing into one of European football’s top creative talents after being deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail: “Martial has been more peripheral this season but Sevilla would be the wrong move for him.

“I can imagine United, and Jose, are scared to let him go.“If they are not careful there is every chance he could become another Kevin De Bruyne, who Mourinho let go at Chelsea. “I understand why agents want to move their players around but Martial is not going to find many better clubs than Manchester United.

“With Martial's £58 million price tag comes added scrutiny. While he has not had the same impact as last season, he is still just 21 and has a manager who will help him.”

Martial has been restricted to just eight Premier League starts this season, and 18 appearances in all competitions. He finished the 2015-16 campaign as United’s top goalscorer, but has only five efforts to his name so far this term.

The most recent of those did come against Middlesbrough on New Year’s Eve, though, with his late strike helping the Red Devils to pick up a fifth successive win in the English top-flight and close on the top four.

Emery considering PSG future of Liverpool target Jese

    jese-cropped_1awq29j0vjdsl1pk8vv864rx0r.jpg

Unai Emery has suggested Paris Saint-Germain may allow Jese Rodriguez to leave the club, amid reports he could sign for hometown club Las Palmas.

Former Real Madrid forward Jese joined the French champions for a reported €25million and signed a five-year deal in August, but has barely featured in Emery's plans. The 23-year-old has only started one Ligue 1 match, making an additional eight substitute appearances and scoring one goal.

As well as Las Palmas, Jese has been linked with Liverpool and Roma, and Emery is aware the switch to PSG has not worked out so far as he ponders his next move."Jese needs to play. When he has played I have been pleased because he has worked well and is involved with the team," Emery told Marca."Yet it is difficult for him to get the continual playing time that gives him confidence.

"So we have spoken about, and we will analyse after the break, the possibilities that are best for the team and best for him, keeping in mind what will help him meet his expectations as a footballer."

PSG's signing of Julian Draxler has further decreased Jese's chances of regular first-team football and, speaking last month, chief executive officer Nasser Al-Khelaifi indicated a willingness to allow him to leave.

Al-Khelafi told Le Parisien: "Emery told me something very true that has also always been part of my thinking."He said, 'When a mistake is made, it is better to try to fix it than to try to live with it'."So, if we have made mistakes, we will try to correct them. The door is not closed."

Benfica warn Manchester United top target Lindelof won't come cheap

    victor-lindelof-cropped_1lds9074vdpt01hlixn7pksu64.jpg

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has warned Manchester United that defender Victor Lindelof will not be sold on the cheap.

United retain an interest in the Sweden international, according to reports in Portugal, despite claims United boss Jose Mourinho was ready to delay plans to make a bid until the summer due to the form of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones in central defence.

Benfica are certainly in no rush to sell and Vieira hinted United would have to meet the player's release clause of around €45m (£37.8m) for him to leave Lisbon for Old Trafford.

He told A Bola: "Lindelof is a Benfica player with a contract which contains a termination clause. Let's wait."

Vieira also addressed speculation linking goalkeeper Ederson with a move to Manchester City.

He added: "At this moment we do not want to sell any of our players except, of course, if a proposal that serves the interests of Benfica and the player arises."

Guardiola: I am nearing the end of my coaching career

    pepguardiola-cropped_ffu9wm8z6opg1hvuhpns0qogd.jpg

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola feels he is already nearing the end of his coaching career.Guardiola, 45, has a three-year contract at the Etihad Stadium but does not envision continuing in the same capacity far beyond that.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time, the Spaniard has won 22 trophies since starting out at Barcelona B in 2007.The Spaniard led Barca's first team to a historic treble in 2008-09 and won three successive Bundesliga titles in as many years at Bayern Munich.

But, despite being in the early stages of his time at City, Guardiola says he is already winding down his career.

"I will be at Manchester for the next three seasons, maybe more, but I am arriving at the end of my coaching career, of this I am sure," he told NBC Sports, prior to City's 2-1 Premier League win over Burnley on Monday.

"I will not be on the bench until I am 60 or 65 years old. I feel that the process of my goodbye has already started."

'Jones made a meal of it' - Bilic left seething following Feghouli red

    slaven-bilic-west-ham-united_1o8v9hjb0bk5j1fj17hbpzl5nt.jpg

Slaven Bilic accused Phil Jones of "making a meal" of the challenge that saw Sofiane Feghouli sent off, a decision he said killed West Ham's chances of beating Manchester United.

Feghouli, making his first Premier League start for the Hammers, was sent off after lunging into a 50-50 tackle with United defender Jones just 15 minutes into the contest at London Stadium.

West Ham fought valiantly with 10 men, but were ultimately undone by second-half goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the Red Devils made it six league wins in a row with a 2-0 victory.Hammers boss Bilic was furious with referee Mike Dean's decision to send off Feghouli, though, and claimed that a foul had actually been committed by Jones.

"It was never a red card. It was a challenge from both of them. The foul is Phil Jones. He got the ball but went with the scissors," he told Sky Sports .

"Sofiane Feghouli's foot was not high in the air, it was not deliberate. It was the key decision and it killed us. It put the game in a different perspective and was totally unfair for us."Phil made a meal of it, but you cannot blame him. Maybe he made a meal because he is the one who went in dangerously and he is saving himself."
West Ham were further incensed when Ibrahimovic's goal was allowed to stand despite the Sweden striker having drifted offside.Bilic stated that he has sympathy with the job the officials have, but was left dumbfounded as to why the flag was not raised.

He added: "It was a big offside for the second goal. When the players are sprinting it is hard for the referees. I am the first to say that. "But the players were walking. They should spot this."

Despite having played the majority of the game with 10 men, West Ham had the chance to take the lead when Michail Antonio went through one-on-one with the score at 0-0 only to be denied by David de Gea and Bilic was disappointed his team were not more clinical."Ten men against a team like this is very hard, but we had chances. We had to score the goal when we had the chance," he said.

"That would have lifted us. I am disappointed with the result and frustrated by how we lost it, but I am proud of my players."

    Balotelli can't fill Ibrahimovic's shadow - Subasic

    hd-mario-balotelli-nice_fdh013ue7ert1t9ayqotdpxq1.jpg

Mario Balotelli may have got off to a flying start in Ligue 1 with Nice, but he cannot be considered a talisman of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's ilk, according to Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic. The Italy international has been in excellent form since moving to France from Liverpool in the early weeks of the season and has thoroughly impressed with eight goals in nine games in the league despite being hindered by slight injuries.

Nice finished 2016 top of the French top flight, five points ahead of last season's champions Paris Saint-Germain, who are yet to get going following the departure of iconic striker Ibrahimovic. While Balotelli may be on fire for Nice, Subasic has dismissed the idea of him being Nice's version of the enigmatic Swede."No way, not close! He is good player, but can't fill Ibra's shadow," he told 24 sata.

"Nice is our main rival now, they play great, but it is only half way, we'll see how long will they be able to keep this rhythm.

"What is happening to PSG? No Ibra, no party, haha! You don't have to like him, but 30 goals and 15 assists per season... you have to respect him. Last season PSG finished 30 points ahead of us and if Ibra had played for Monaco, we would have been champions!"

Monaco currently sit two points behind Nice in Ligue 1 and are still competing in the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and Champions League, meeting Manchester City in the second round of the latter.

Subasic admits finishing top of the domestic league is not a necessity for his side, and feels progressing to the next round of the Champions League would be a bonus. "In Monaco we are hungry for success, we haven't won any trophy, so we 'bite'," the Croatia international added. "In attack we are very strong, but sometimes we get carried away and concede silly goals, at 3-0 or 4-0.

"In our most recent game we were 2-0 up against Caen and instead of defending the lead, we kept attacking and ended up conceding a goal in 95th minute. We have young team, that lacks experience.

"Our goal for this season is second place and a place in the Champions League.Everything above that would be a bonus, Including eliminating Man City."There is no easy opponent in the Champions League last 16. In previous years we had to face Arsenal and Juventus, now it is Manchester City... A big club, a big coach and a big team.

"They are not in perfect shape right now, but they will be big favorites against us. But, of course we have our chance, we just have to relax and play our best."
