Tottenham 4-0 West Brom: Kane hits hat-trick as Spurs make it six in a row

    harry-kane-tottenham-west-brom_1xaa4lmnmkerk1rlfbbl7wm89g.jpg

Tottenham built on their win over Premier League leaders Chelsea as Harry Kane netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 demolition of West Brom.

Ahead of the game against Tony Pulis' men, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino cautioned his players against dropping off after a major win over a title rival – noting their seven-match winless run in all competitions that came on the back of a rampant victory against Manchester City in October.

That slump began with a 1-1 draw at West Brom, but the same opponents were ill-equipped to offer similar difficulties to a Spurs side whose speed of thought and foot put them a cut above on this occasion.

Kane scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season in the 12th minute and Gareth McAuley diverted a shot from Christian Eriksen beyond his goalkeeper Ben Foster before the half hour in what was a torrid opening half for Albion.

Foster's excellence, particularly at Kane's expense, was responsible for preventing considerably heavier damage before Spurs' top scorer struck twice in quick succession to claim the matchball after becoming a father for the first time last weekend.

Tottenham are within four points of Chelsea in second ahead of Antonio Conte's men playing champions Leicester City later on Saturday, with an apparent ankle injury for Jan Vertonghen the only blot on their day.

Danny Rose was down on the turf early on when former Spurs player Nacer Chadli appeared to accidentally catch him in the eye but the left wing-back produced a wonderful fourth-minute cross, from which Kane stabbed a volley wastefully wide.

The England striker soon made amends as a deep West Brom defensive line gave Eriksen space to scheme and unpick them, with Kane collecting the pass and turning to arrow a strike into the top-left corner with minimal backlift.Kane almost had a second when Foster stopped his header with his legs and scrambled back to grab the loose ball on his goalline.

Rose supplied the ammunition from the right flank on that occasion and from the same position he passed short to Eriksen, whose shot deflected decisively off McAuley and in.

Foster denied Kane at close quarters with his left boot and the pair continued their duel in the 35th minute, with a stunning fingertip save denying the Tottenham man after he weaved towards the West Brom area and unleashed a thumping left-foot drive from 20 yards.

The visitors were notable for their absence as an attacking force during the first period but Salomon Rondon played through Matt Phillips to clip a shot just past the left post.

Foster added to his excellent body of work, denying Toby Alderweireld with a reaction stop from a 56th-minute corner and keeping out a deflected drive when the loose ball reached Vertonghen.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper then plunged to once again push a Kane shot to safety but defensive inadequacy left him exposed as Tottenham wrapped up the points.Kane steered home a bouncing ball from Kyle Walker, who capitalised on a napping McAuley 13 minutes from time to spear in the cross.

There was further misery for West Brom – and underserved woe for Foster – eight minutes from time as Kane beautifully annotated the win by slipping a pass to Alli 25 yards from goal and continuing his run to dispatch his international colleague's scooped pass.

Evra still undecided on future, says Allegri

    patrice-evra-cropped_1uap62wt7h82u1bd8dhv12ujpd.jpg

Patrice Evra is still mulling over his future, according to Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri.

Evra is a reported target for Crystal Palace and Valencia and has sat out Juve's two matches following the winter break - a Serie A victory over Bologna and a midweek Coppa Italia win against Atalanta. He will again be missing as the Bianconeri go to Fiorentina on Sunday night but his absence has been sanctioned by Allegri.

"Evra, besides being a great professional, is a great person," the trainer told reporters."We talked quietly together, he is considering what to do, and this situation creates absolutely no problem or any disturbance."

Juve sit four points clear at the Serie A summit with a game in hand and, while happy with their progress, Allegri warned there is still much work to do over the second half of the season.

"We have done some good things this season," he said. "But the important thing is to concede fewer goals. On Sunday we are facing a side that loves to shoot from distance, as they've got players who can do that from all angles.

"We can also improve on our passing, the way we command the game and to defend when it's necessary. There's no shame in that, football is about defending and attacking. That has to be the next step in our journey."If we retain our current lead over the next four games then we'll have a very good chance of taking home the Scudetto."

Fiorentina and Juventus share a keen rivalry and Allegri is aware of the importance of the fixture to Sunday's opponents."It’s always the game of the year for Fiorentina and I hope for a great evening of sport, including in the stands," he said.

Allegri has issues to ponder ahead of the game, however, most notably in defence.
"I am going to evaluate the condition of [Giorgio] Chiellini as he had a fever on Friday," he added.

"Andrea Barzagli has played a lot recently, so I'd either need to turn someone else into a full-back or change system, but I can assure the approach of the team will not change.

"Either I find a right-back from Barzagli, Juan Cuadrado and Stefano Sturaro or I have to change something."

Barcelona confirm talks with Messi over new deal

    lionelmessi-cropped_wvosiiy44rb310i06rpickkca.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has reassured that Lionel Messi wants to stay at the club and insists that contract talks have begun with the player's camp.
Barca must get priorities right after latest PR disaster

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi's existing deal is set to expire at the end of next season, with Barca chief executive Oscar Grau admitting on Wednesday a Liga spending cap could prove troublesome in agreeing a renewal.

The Catalan giants sacked director Pere Gratacos after he stated Messi would not be as good without team-mates like Neymar, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta – an opinion deemed not to "coincide with those of the club".

Despite an increasingly turbulent situation, Bartomeu – who said in December that Messi should be the highest-paid player in the world – remains calm about keeping the 29-year-old at Camp Nou.

"There aren't any nerves. I want to reassure everyone, I will personally take care of the negotiations with Leo and his family," he said on Esport3."Everything requires time. We want Messi to remain here, but I will not give out any details.

"We are talking with his people. He is the best in the world, he wants to stay here and we want him to as well.

"Everything will be done with discretion and calmness. Of course it is an essential renewal for the club."I have already said the sooner the better – nothing has changed."Bartomeu went on to discuss the latest controversy surrounding the club concerning the sacking of Gratacos, but he seemed surprised by the outrage.

"We do not understand the controversy that the removal of Gratacos has generated," he said. "His statements were not adequate with what the club thinks."

Barcelona players snubbed FIFA's The Best awards gala, in which Messi was nominated for the men's award, won by Cristiano Ronaldo, but Bartomeu maintains they were focused on their midweek game.

"FIFA understood that we could not go to the gala because the priority was the Copa del Rey match against Athletic. Relationships are excellent."

Swansea City 0-4 Arsenal: Gunners move up to third as Clement loses first league game in charge

    hd-alex-iwobi-swansea-arsenal_jly10zjyj0241bnie42dlcb2n.jpg

Arsenal put pressure on their fellow Premier League title challengers as they secured a 4-0 victory against Swansea City on Saturday.

Paul Clement, who took over as Swans head coach on January 3, said Arsenal were appropriate opponents for his first league game in charge given the scouting report he had compiled on them while at Bayern Munich, but all his careful planning was undone by ill-fortune and dismal defending.

Swansea had matched the Gunners' intensity early on but a loss of concentration allowed Giroud to turn in from close range after the returning Mesut Ozil's header was not cleared.

Alex Iwobi killed any hopes of a comeback from the league's bottom club after the break, the Nigeria winger forcing own goals in the space of 13 minutes from Jack Cork and Kyle Naughton.

Sanchez capitalised on some more poor defending to add a fourth for Arsenal that moves them above Liverpool - who face Manchester United on Sunday - and into third in the table, five points behind leaders Chelsea.

Swansea started brightly and came closest to breaking the initial deadlock when Naughton forced Petr Cech to tip a low strike around his right-hand post.Sanchez tested Lukasz Fabianski with a low strike but that was Arsenal's only effort on goal in a sluggish opening half-hour.

Indeed, Swansea were comfortable in dealing with the Gunners' threat, but they switched off for the first time eight minutes before the break to allow the visitors to take the lead.

Sanchez collected the ball from an Aaron Ramsey cross and picked out Ozil unmarked near the penalty spot, and when his header deflected into Giroud's feet, the France striker fired high into Fabianski's net from point-blank range.

Swansea thought they had a chance for an equaliser when Ki Sung-yueng went down in the area after being clipped by Laurent Koscielny, making his 200th Premier League appearance, but referee Mike Jones opted to book the midfielder for going to ground too easily.

Arsenal turned up the pressure from the off in the second half and found a crucial second goal with 54 minutes played - albeit in extremely fortunate circumstances.
A loose ball broke to Iwobi in the area and his low right-footed strike took a huge deflection off the foot of Cork and looped over the despairing Fabianski and into the corner of the net, before another Iwobi effort found the back of net via a deflection off Naughton soon after.

Swansea heads had dropped and Sanchez made the most of some more slack defending to score Arsenal's fourth, the Chile star placing the ball into the top-right corner of Fabianski's net after it fell kindly to him following Wayne Routledge's challenge on Ramsey.

The latter stages were played out at a pedestrian pace but the glum faces from the watching Swansea board said enough, as Clement suffered the same fate as predecessor Bob Bradley in his first league match in charge - a defeat to Arsene Wenger's side.

Burnley 1-0 Southampton: Barton bags all three points for Clarets

    joey-barton-burnley_15uw4hzgdelvn12lq7b6fntm85.jpg

Joey Barton scored the winning goal on his Premier League debut for Burnley after coming on as a substitute in the second half of a 1-0 win over Southampton.

The 34-year-old was making his first league appearance since returning to Turf Moor and his first real contribution lifted the roof off the old stadium when his low free-kick found the corner of a net that Burnley had barely threatened up to that point.

Southampton looked set to end a run of three straight Premier League defeats but Barton spoiled their determined defensive display and travelling supporters concerned about the plight of their club under Claude Puel's management saw little to ease their worries in a toothless performance.

Burnley were not much brighter, and the positive, attack-minded football that earned Burnley a 4-1 win over Sunderland in their previous Premier League home game was replaced by cagey counter-attacking and an unwillingness to commit men forward, with Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk rarely stretched as he marshalled his side's defence.

Southampton sent on former Claret Jay Rodriguez to try and swing the match, but Barton's very presence in midfield transformed the home side and the man who was instrumental in earning the club promotion to the Premier League in 2015-16 further endeared himself to the Burnley faithful.

Ryan Bertrand burst down the left after five minutes and his cross found the onrushing Shane Long, but Stephen Ward did enough to put the Irishman off and his shot went over the crossbar.

Dusan Tadic's neat footwork produced a dangerous cross that Nathan Redmond couldn't quite connect with, and as Southampton's bright start failed to yield a goal Burnley grew in confidence.

Van Dijk steadied the Saints' defence as Andre Gray tried to twist and turn his way towards goal, and for the first half hour Burnley's chances were restricted to a Ben Mee shot from the edge of the penalty area that flashed wide of the target.

At the other end, a Redmond pass picked out Tadic in the box and the Serbian midfielder had time and space to find the corner of the net but he dragged the shot just wide.

Tadic had another effort blocked on the line by Mee, before the best chance of the first half fell to him when he connected with James Ward-Prowse's cross but his downward header was well saved by the fast reactions of Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton.Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster saved a Steven Defour free-kick early in the second half but chances for both sides remained few and far between.

Puel sent on Jay Rodriguez against his old club to a rapturous reception by the Clarets supporters, and his arrival preceded a narrow miss by Long, who headed Cedric Soares' cross into the side netting.

Heaton made a crucial save when Van Dijk's deft cross caused a scramble in the box, and Dyche sent on Barton and Sam Vokes to try and swing the game in Burnley's favour.

The change worked perfectly and, after Barton's low free-kick bounced past Forster and into the corner of the net, Heaton made a superb double save to keep Burnley in front and wrap up a memorable victory that lifts the hosts into the top 10.

Sunderland 1-3 Stoke City: Arnautovic double sends Potters into top-half

    marko-arnautovic-stoke-city-14012017_izfuh8fwf71614mbb471jbtuv.jpg

Sunderland's relegation fears grew after Marko Arnautovic scored twice to help Stoke City to a convincing 3-1 win at the Stadium of Light. The visitors scored three times in the opening 34 minutes to pave the way for a victory that moves them up ninth and will ease the pressure on manager Mark Hughes following last weekend's shock home defeat to Wolves in the FA Cup.

It was another abject afternoon for the Black Cats, however, who slip to 19th in the Premier League, a point adrift of safety, thanks to a listless performance that drew boos at half-time and the final whistle.Arnautovic opened the scoring after 15 minutes and doubled his side's tally seven minutes later following a lovely, flowing move from Hughes' men.

Peter Crouch celebrated his new one-year contract by adding a third, rising high above the weak challenge of Vito Mannone, but Jermain Defoe pulled one back before the break.

The second period was sedate in comparison with Sunderland's hopes of finding a route back into the game effectively ending when Jack Rodwell sliced horribly wide from 10 yards on the hour mark.

Stoke bossed from the outset with Sunderland's makeshift midfield struggling to cope with the visitors' superior movement.

And it was no surprise when Stoke struck first. Xherdan Shaqiri's raking pass picked out Arnautovic, who had escaped the attentions of Donald Love, and, although his first effort was blocked by Vito Mannone, the rebound fell kindly for the Austria international to hammer into the net.Sunderland's defending was called into question again as Arnautovic made it 2-0 following a sweeping Stoke attack.

The former Werder Bremen winger played unchallenged one-twos with Shaqiri and then Crouch before firing high above Mannone and in.

Mannone almost gifted Stoke a third after 33 minutes when he fumbled Shaqiri's routine 25-yard drive onto the post and wide but it proved brief respite as from the resulting corner Stoke scored again.

The ball was partially cleared as far as Charlie Adam and his punt back into the box was perfect for Crouch to rise above Mannone and nod into the unguarded net.

The Stadium of Light emptied as fans poured towards the refreshment areas and those that did depart missed a Sunderland rally before half-time.Rodwell had already seen a shot saved by Lee Grant before Defoe reduced the arrears, running on to Love's long pass and slipping the ball past Grant.

Fabio Borini drew a smart save from Grant shortly after the restart although the visitors always carried a threat on the counter, Arnautovic almost netting a hat-trick after running on to Shaqiri's clever pass and shooting narrowly wide.

Rodwell then missed a wonderful chance to set up a frantic final half hour when he failed to find the target after the ball had diverted kindly into his path.

Sunderland huffed and puffed in the closing stages but Stoke continued to keep the Wearsiders at arm's length to complete a well-deserved win that moved them into the top half.

West Ham 3-0 Crystal Palace: Carroll stunner helps Hammers to win

    west-ham-andy-carroll_1s2s023klz4mg1is57w1voz9tb.jpg

Andy Carroll's stunning scissor-kick helped West Ham to a 3-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace in the absence of wantaway star Dimitri Payet at London Stadium.

After a poor first half in which the Hammers had badly missed Payet - whose intention to leave the club has been revealed by manager Slaven Bilic - Sofiane Feghouli netted his first Premier League goal, Carroll added a superb second and Manuel Lanzini completed the scoring to end a three-match losing run.

It was a huge moment for Feghouli, snubbed by Algeria for the Africa Cup of Nations, but Carroll was the star in a marvellous second-half performance that reached a crescendo with a strike of supreme quality.

Thrashing high into the net to leave Wayne Hennessey with no chance, the England international banished memories of West Ham's earlier struggles as they waited half an hour for a first opportunity.

Lanzini's neat finish added a gloss to the scoreline, and this result leaves former Hammers manager Sam Allardyce still chasing his first win as Palace boss.

With Wilfried Zaha away on international duty, the visitors looked blunt in attack, and league debutant Loic Remy could not make an impact from the bench.
After a slow start, Carroll mustered the game's first effort of note, flashing a volley narrowly over from Mark Noble's right-wing cross.

Although Yohan Cabaye responded with a thunderous strike hitting the target from 25 yards, Darren Randolph was able to gather.

The West Ham goalkeeper should then have been given no chance as James Tomkins met an Andros Townsend free-kick in front of goal, but, against his former club, the defender somehow stabbed wide.

Michail Antonio crucially kept Jason Puncheon from turning in another fine Townsend delivery, and further wayward blasts from Carroll and Cabaye followed soon after the break.

Palace defenders twice deflected Carroll headers off target, and the former Liverpool striker then fired a strike past the near post as he twisted into space in the area.

Lanzini curled a free-kick over before substitute Sam Byram thumped wide, but West Ham's domination in the second half was finally rewarded after 68 minutes.

Antonio tore past Hennessey from a delicate Noble pass and, pushed wide on the left, centred for Feghouli to bundle into the net. With Allardyce throwing on Remy to chase a leveller, West Ham countered and Antonio sliced wide, before he laid on the clincher.

Acrobatically leaping to meet Antonio's cross, Carroll crashed a volley past the stationary Hennessey to kill off any Palace hopes.Lanzini then sealed the points with four minutes remaining, racing clear and dinking a fine finish over the goalkeeper.

Barcelona 5-0 Las Palmas: Suarez at the double as hosts put pressure on leaders Real

    luis-suarez-barcelona-las-palmas-la-liga_jzkx9kfvj6541axryqidg6nrl.png

Luis Suarez scored twice at the end of a week to remember and Lionel Messi was also on target as Barcelona resoundingly returned to winning ways in La Liga by battering Las Palmas 5-0.

Uruguay forward Suarez scored his 100th Barca goal in Wednesday's 3-1 Copa del Rey victory over Athletic Bilbao and he broke the deadlock here during a first half dominated by the home side at Camp Nou.

Andre Gomes - who had one of his best games in a Barca shirt - and Rafinha were among those to be denied in the opening period, but Messi - who also scored against Athletic - capitalised on goalkeeper Javi Varas' error to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.

Suarez grabbed his second with a cool finish five minutes later before Arda Turan followed up on the rebound from the Uruguayan's saved effort to make it three goals in seven second-half minutes. That put Barca out of sight before Aleix Vidal completed the rout with 10 minutes left with his first goal for the club.

Luis Enrique's men consequently rebounded from last week's contentious 1-1 draw at Villarreal to close within two points of leaders and rivals Real Madrid, albeit having played two games more.

Zinedine Zidane's side travel to Sevilla - who dropped to third below Barca - on Sunday.Barca were typically dominant in possession in the early stages without causing much trouble in the opposition's third.

Las Palmas were caught cold in the 14th minute, though. Gomes sprung the offside trap on the right before squaring to Suarez, who swept the ball home first time from eight yards.

That proved the catalyst for a Barca onslaught and Rafinha soon dragged a shot wide of the right-hand post after fine work by Messi, with a frustrated Suarez wide open. They were in full flow and a terrific break involving Arda and Suarez led to Gomes drawing a terrific point-blank stop from Varas.

Gomes then controlled Sergio Busquets' excellent chipped pass only to lash a half-volley over, before Messi pounced on Varas' spill to flash a cross-shot across the face of goal after again showing sublime footwork.

Messi almost scored a fourth free-kick of 2017, but Varas palmed his effort away from the top-right corner before the goalkeeper made a fine one-on-one save to deny the Argentinian superstar.

Barca rested captain Gerard Pique, perhaps in part due to the defender's public criticism of officials following matches against Bilbao and Villarreal, but the visitors did not threaten until Kevin Prince-Boateng's attempted overhead kick early in the second half.

The hosts remained in the ascendancy and Varas' poor parry from Rafinha's cross from the left of the area gifted Messi a simple tap in to start the goal rush after 52 minutes. It was soon 3-0 when Rafinha picked out Suarez, who opened up his body and sent a low effort into the far corner from the left of the box.

Las Palmas were shell-shocked and, although Varas denied Suarez a hat-trick when one-on-one, Arda followed up to stroke home the rebound just before the hour mark.

The match was now a formality, but Barca wrapped up the win when Vidal netted home his first goal in a Barca shirt with 10 minutes left, after Paco Alcacer had found his run into the area.

Rennes 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Draxler secures victory on first start

    julian-draxler-psg-paris-saint-germain_92mjoig274ci1ixnj3u2tl7zo.jpg

Julian Draxler marked his Ligue 1 debut by scoring in Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 victory over Rennes at Roazhon Park on Saturday.

The big-money signing from Wolfsburg scored on his first competitive outing in last weekend's 7-0 Coupe de France demolition of Bastia and, after sitting out the midweek clash against Metz with a knock, found the net again to put the pressure on Ligue 1 leaders Nice and second-placed Monaco.

Draxler bent a sublime finish across goalkeeper Benoit Costil to send PSG level with Monaco, who play away at Marseille after Nice, whose advantage at the summit is now two points, host Metz.

The reigning champions may feel hard done by not to have added to the scoreline, with Marco Verratti receiving a yellow card from referee Benoit Bastien after being harshly deemed to have dived inside the box in the first half.

Replays suggested it may well have been the wrong decision, but Bastien was clearly unfazed and booked Thiago Motta for trying to win a penalty in the second half, though this time his decision appeared correct.

Rennes offered minimal threat with top scorer Giovanni Sio away on international duty with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, and PSG avoided a third successive winless Ligue 1 match on the road.

Edinson Cavani had a chance to match his record of 19 goals in a single Ligue 1 season after 41 seconds, but somehow stabbed wide from eight yards when one-on-one with Costil.Draxler managed to hit the target with his first attempt in the eighth minute, though he sent it straight at Costil for a fairly routine save.

The Rennes goalkeeper remained alert to parry Blaise Matuidi's 25-yard strike away to his left and PSG's early urgency soon ebbed away with Christian Gourcuff's side gaining composure.

The visitors should have had a penalty before the half-hour mark when Verratti went down under contact from the onrushing Costil, but referee Bastien deemed it simulation and showed the incredulous midfielder a yellow card.

Rennes were unable to keep PSG out much longer, Draxler curling a sublime first-time finish from Verratti's pass into the bottom-right corner in the 39th minute.Lucas Moura headed wide before Unai Emery's team were denied another penalty in the 62nd minute.

Motta went down after knocking the ball past Costil but clearly sought the smallest amount of contact, Bastien keeping his cool despite the first-half controversy and adding the Italy international's name to the book.Wesley Said had a tame effort held by Kevin Trapp before Cavani, who received minimal service, was replaced by Hatem Ben Arfa in the 70th minute.

Draxler was taken off for Adrien Rabiot three minutes later, and the midfielder forced an impressive save from Costil as PSG comfortably saw out just a second win in their last five Ligue 1 outings.

Conte: Diego Costa not in Chelsea squad because he's injured

    diego-costa_7yrvjhbsyul71c1d3f4ht3qb8.jpg

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has denied reports of a bust-up with star striker Diego Costa.Goal understands the Blues boss had a row with Costa and that he subsequently didn't train with the club in the build-up to Saturday's game against champions Leicester City.

There have also been reports that the Spain striker's head may well have been turned by a mammoth £30 million-per-year contract offer from the Chinese Super League.

And while Conte confirmed that the 28-year-old has not trained with his team-mates since Tuesday but insisted that it was injury – and not a sanction – which kept Costa out of the matchday squad.

"On Tuesday Diego stopped training due to a pain in his back,” the Italian told BT Sport. “During the week he didn't train with us for these reasons."This is not the first time we play without Diego. It's not the first time we played without him. We prepared very well for this game [without him]."

It had been reported that Costa clashed with one of Chelsea’s fitness personnel on Tuesday over his back problem which drew Conte into the row.

The Blues boss was reported to have said “go to China!” to his 14-goal hitman following a bid from a Chinese club thought to be Fabio Cannavaro’s Tianjin Quanjian.

Eden Hazard led the line for the table toppers with Costa absent and Michy Batshuayi again consigned to the bench.

Leicester City 0-3 Chelsea: Alonso scores twice as Costa-less Blues go seven clear

Diego Costa's absence had little impact on Chelsea's title tilt as Marcos Alonso's double saw them restore their seven-point advantage at the Premier League summit with a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

The Spain striker, rumoured to be the target of a big-money bid from Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Quanjian, was dropped after a reported bust-up with manager Antonio Conte and fitness coach Julio Tous in training this week.

Conte spoke ahead of the match to confirm the 28-year-old – the division's joint-top scorer – had suffered a back injury, though the Italian said nothing regarding any falling out and was soon celebrating an opener at the King Power Stadium.

Alonso provided a neat finish from close range to hand Chelsea – for whom Michy Batshuayi remained on the bench – a sixth-minute lead, showing a spirited response to the earlier 4-0 wins of London title rivals Tottenham and Arsenal.

In a fixture pitching the title holders against the leaders, it was the latter who looked more worthy of the mantle of champions and Alonso scored again six minutes into the second half, before Pedro's late header wrapped up a third win over Leicester this season.

It leaves Claudio Ranieri's side 15th, with a five-point gap to the bottom three, while Chelsea's lead can be cut by Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp's charges head to Manchester United on Sunday.

The visitors, beaten by Spurs last time out in the league to end their 13-match top-flight winning streak, were ahead early on, with neat build-up play leading to a mishit shot from Pedro, which fell kindly for Eden Hazard to selflessly lay on a simple finish for Alonso.

Leicester's strong home form, which had yielded 18 of their 21 points prior to kick-off, marked them down as dangerous opponents, but Ranieri's men – deprived of the services of Africa Cup of Nations-bound trio Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Daniel Amartey – lacked fluency against his former club.

Ben Chilwell's header from Marc Albrighton's right-wing cross was well wide in the 17th minute, while Wilfred Ndidi sliced off target with an ambitious 20-yard attempt.

A Jamie Vardy cross-cum-shot forced Thibaut Courtois into action on the half-hour mark and Pedro blazed over the crossbar for the away side following a well-worked set-piece routine just before the break.

Any resolve on Leicester's part to make it a difficult evening for Chelsea vanished soon after play resumed, with Alonso collecting Willian's partially cleared free-kick to whip in a shot that took a deflection off Wes Morgan and beat Kasper Schmeichel.Centre-back Gary Cahill showed the technique of a seasoned striker to direct an acrobatic effort towards goal, but Morgan was on hand to block six yards out.

Alonso almost capped a superb solo display with a hat-trick when his well-executed volley bounced narrowly wide of Schmeichel's left-hand upright, with Conte's men looking to put the match well beyond Leicester's reach.

And they did just that in the 71st minute as Pedro headed into an unguarded net after Willian's pass had reared up off Schmeichel, with the visitors leaving their White Hart Lane frustration behind them to reassert their position as clear favourites to win the Premier League.

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Betis: Gaitan grabs three points for hosts

Nico Gaitan's first-half goal proved decisive as Atletico Madrid stuttered to an unimpressive 1-0 La Liga win at home to a Real Betis side who pushed their hosts all the way on Saturday.

Diego Simeone's men looked a far sterner defensive unit than they did in Tuesday's woeful 3-2 Copa del Rey second-leg defeat to Las Palmas, but going forward looked devoid of craft for long periods.

Initially they looked bright in attack and Gaitan, who was given just his fourth league start of the season after impressing on Tuesday, repaid Simeone's faith with the opener.

There was little else for Atletico supporters to get excited about, though, as Betis produced a strong performance of their own with home goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya impressing.

The win enabled Atletico to move within two points of third-placed Sevilla, who host Real Madrid on Sunday.Atletico began with real intent and took charge early on, breaking the deadlock after just eight minutes.

The visitors were caught out in midfield and Atletico broke quickly, with Sime Vrsaljko charging up the right flank and seeing his low cross deflected into the path of Gaitan, who prodded past Antonio Adan from close range.

Antoine Griezmann should have added a second shortly afterwards but smashed a right-footed effort over the bar after the ball dropped kindly for him in the centre of the area. The hosts' dominance soon waned and Betis put together some tidy passing moves as they looked to carve through Atletico's stubborn defence.

Betis crafted their first chance in the 34th minute, with Moya forced to dive to his right to thwart Ruben Castro after Stefan Savic's wayward pass had put Atletico in trouble.

And Moya had to be alert again just before the break, keeping Jonas Martin's 12-yard effort out after an intricate move towards the right-hand side of the box.

Atletico looked to have renewed focus at the start of the second half and Fernando Torres – who was anonymous before the break – was presented with an early chance, but he could not squeeze his effort past Adan from a tight angle.

The home side were more compact in midfield and afforded the lively Dani Ceballos less space than they did in the first half.Atletico did go close to a second, as Yannick Carrasco darted in from the left and blasted at Adan from 16 yards shortly after his 62nd-minute introduction for Gaitan.

Carrasco's entrance certainly made a difference for the home side and they began to attack with more intensity in the final 10 minutes as they attempted to defend from the front.

And Simeone's tactics worked, as Atletico saw things out to claim a third successive league win.
