Mustafi reveals Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand is his defensive idol

    carraghers-man-utd-xi-rio-ferdinand_15helydzreujn1kb0ayw20nq1n.jpg

Shkodran Mustafi has revealed that former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is his defensive idol.

Mustafi, who spent four years in England playing for Everton as a youngster, grew up watching the centre-back ply his trade for the likes of Leeds and Manchester United.

The 24-year-old possesses similar defensive attributes to the former England man and claims he “had everything a defender needed”.

He also revealed his other footballing idols with the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho featuring prominently on his list of all-time greats.

“I loved watching Zidane. I loved watching Ronaldinho and when I became a defender I loved Ferdinand," Mustafi told Goal.

“He was always there, screaming, tackling playing. He had everything a defender needed."

Mustafi has yet to lose a game during his first few months at Arsenal and is part of a back four which has conceded just 19 goals in 20 matches.

Courtois: Everyone is happy at Chelsea despite Costa situation

    chelsea-bournemouth-courtois_xj50a0u8jl121khjrpeb83l47.jpg

Thibaut Courtois says that Chelsea is a happy place to be despite news of a clash between Diego Costa and manager Antonio Conte emerging at the end of last week.

Costa is thought to have received a huge offer from China to make him one of the highest paid players in the world, which has meant that he hasn't trained with the first team squad for the past three days.

Conte stated after his 3-0 win over Leicester City that his striker officially had a back injury, but Costa's head appears to have been turned by a big money offer.
Despite that, goalkeeper Courtois says that the players aren't worried about the situation and are more concerned with competing for the Premier League title.

"Yes. We are very happy, everyone is happy at Chelsea at the moment," Courtois told reporters. "If you are in first place with a seven point lead, it helps. It helps that you are winning, it helps in the way you're working and helps everybody accept the way of working.

"The mood is very good, everyone trains very hard during the week. When we win like Saturday, we get a free day on the Sunday and it is obviously a nice feeling. Diego didn't train since Tuesday and the manager had a plan in his head.

'I am really happy at Arsenal' - Alexis Sanchez casts doubt over transfer claims

    alexis-sanchez-premier-league-arsenal-v-west-brom-261216_17n1hwbuo0foy16ubqc2rjxhqv.jpg

Alexis Sanchez insists he is "really happy" at Arsenal and hopes to win the Premier League or Champions League at the club.

The former Barcelona man, along with Mesut Ozil, has under 18 months remaining on his current contract and is understood to be stalling on recommitting over issues such as Arsene Wenger's future and their own pay.

The Chilean, in words that mirror that of Ozil's from Sunday after being named German player of the year for a fifth time, says he is "comfortable" at the club and wants to repay their fans' faith with silverware.

"I definitely feel like an important player, and my team-mates let me know every day," he told Arsenal's official YouTube channel. "I try to prove that I am an important player every day and game after game.

"I believe we have the players and the quality to win many things. I feel really happy and comfortable at the club. I want to give the fans a new title."We always get our fans' support in the thick and thin, which is great. We must win the Premier League or Champions League for them."

Ozil seemed visibly upset after being substituted during Arsenal's dominant 4-0 win at Swansea City, sitting on the bench with a coat over his head as he watched the final 11 minutes of the game.

Torino 2-2 Milan: Bacca caps thrilling comeback as hosts pay the penalty

    carlos-bacca-torino-milan-serie-a_1u67q2q0gwh821a3ylyaxuq78t.jpg

AC Milan recovered from two goals down to draw a thrilling Serie A clash 2-2 at Torino, for whom Adem Ljajic missed a spot-kick to make it 3-0.

Torino were rampant in the first half, Andrea Belotti making it eight goals in his last nine Serie A games before Marco Benassi's impressive flick doubled their lead.
The hosts were threatening to run away with it but Ljajic had his penalty saved by Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before half-time.

And that allowed Milan to launch a rapid second-half fightback, Andrea Bertolacci getting one back before Carlos Bacca scored from a penalty of his own on the hour mark.

Neither side went on to find a decisive third goal, Milan's Alessio Romagnoli sent off a minute from time for a second booking. Torino have only won against the Rossoneri in one of their last 40 top-flight meetings while Sinisa Mihajlovic has failed to beat his former club in three attempts this season.

Fifth-placed Milan have won just one of their last four league games, but sit within four points of Napoli in third ahead of their crunch clash at San Siro on Saturday. Vincenzo Montella's men still hold a game in hand on most of their rivals for a Champions League spot.

Mid-table Torino, meanwhile, have just one victory in six top-flight games after surrendering their lead, although Juventus remain the only team to have beaten them in 10 home games.

Belotti came into the game in fine form and it was he who struck in the 21st minute when Iago Falque found Ljajic and his attempted shot was steered in by the striker.

Five minutes later it was two for the hosts after Milan had twice failed to clear the danger. Belotti picked up the loose ball and linked up with Falque, whose pass was brilliantly flicked in by Benassi, with Romagnoli unable to clear from the goal-line.Torino then squandered a glorious chance to put the result beyond doubt just after the half-hour mark.

A penalty was awarded when Antonio Barreca made ground down the left wing and went down under a clip from Ignazio Abate, but Ljajic fired a dreadful spot-kick straight at Donnarumma and Falque lashed the rebound wide.

Joe Hart was called upon for first time prior to the break, rising high to keep out a long-range shot from Suso before also denying Bertolacci to preserve his side's two-goal advantage.

But Milan did beat Hart within 10 minutes of the restart, Abate's cross from the right leading to chaos in the Torino defence and Bertolacci defeated the England keeper from close range at the second attempt.

Benassi thought he had made an instant response for Torino but was correctly flagged for offside after prodding in when Donnarumma parried Falque's strike. An end-to-end clash continued with Hart making a magnificent diving save from Gabriel Paletta's header following Suso's cross, before Milan drew level.

From the resulting corner, Luca Rossettini was all over Paletta, prompting referee Paolo Tagliavento to point to the spot for the second time and Bacca did not make the same mistake as Ljajic, comfortably sending Hart the wrong way for his eighth top-flight goal of the campaign.

Torino attempted to re-assert themselves as Belotti shot off-target with a presentable chance and Donnarumma saved well from Ljajic. But Mihajlovic's side were forced to settle for an entertaining draw soured slightly by Romagnoli receiving his second yellow for a foul on Belotti.

Ibrahimovic: Pogba can cope with '24-hour' pressure on his shoulders

    pogba-ibrahimovic-manchester-united_ljyrrqsy49qk1p0f5kif3m0z4.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is confident Paul Pogba can cope with the “24-hour pressure” on his shoulders following his dismal display against Liverpool on Sunday.

Pogba, who joined Manchester United in a world-record transfer from Juventus last summer, gave away the penalty which led to James Milner scoring in his side's 1-1 stalemate in the Premier League.

Ibrahimovic knows all about dealing with pressure, having played for a number of the world's greatest clubs including Juventus, Milan, Barcelona and now United in what has been a stunning career.

The striker insists non-stop pressure comes with playing at the top but believes Pogba, like himself, likes that aspect of the game and has backed him to deal with it.

He said: “Pressure is something I enjoy. I don’t know Paul personally to be able to answer that for him. But I think he likes it also because, without pressure, we would not be on our toes at the top level.

“If you want to play at the top, pressure is 24 hours and if you play well or better, the pressure becomes even greater.“So it’s something that we learn from and something we have to handle because we belong to the top. Paul belongs at the top absolutely and the pressure will be there.”

Ibrahimovic scored a last-gasp header as United rescued a point against Liverpool to ensure his side's unbeaten run in all competitions remained intact.

Jose Mourinho's men are unbeaten in their last 16 games in all competitions, though they are 12 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after drawing against Liverpool.

Ex-Man Utd and Barcelona boss Van Gaal announces retirement from football

    louis-van-gaal_1clkzhcrnakgu1r9at61zw00pa.jpg

Former Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal has announced his retirement from professional football. The 65-year-old enjoyed a very successful career as a manager, carving out a career at top clubs in Spain, England, Germany and the Netherlands.

"Last year I said I was going to quit, but later I changed it and I said I would take a sabbatical," Van Gaal told Algemeen Dagblad after being handed a lifetime award by the Dutch government on Monday night.

"Now I believe I will not return any more. So many things have happened in my family recently, so that really was a wake up call and it put everything into perspective."

Van Gaal is referring to the loss of his son-in-law, who died recently, months after the Dutchman's Man Utd exit in May as he was replaced by former understudy Jose Mourinho despite an FA Cup final victory.

After a relatively unremarkable playing career, Van Gaal became Ajax head coach in 1992 following six years on the sidelines in the Eredivisie.

He won league titles with Ajax in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and - even more impressively - triumphed in the Champions League during that period of phenomenal success.Van Gaal left for Barcelona in 1997, where he won two Primera Division titles, one Copa del Rey crown, and the UEFA Super Cup.

He began his first spell as Netherlands in 2000 but infamously failed to reach World Cup 2002 despite a talented team including Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars and Phillip Cocu.

An ill-fated, six-month return to Barcelona was followed by a brief stint as Ajax technical director, before spending four years in charge of Dutch club AZ.Van Gaal took Bayern Munich to the Champions League final in his first year in charge, securing a domestic double in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, but in 2010-11 his team were a shadow of themselves and he was sacked towards the end of the season.

His second spell in charge at Netherlands was a stark contrast to his first attempt at national management, as the Oranje reached the World Cup 2014 semi-finals.

Van Gaal finished his career with two years in charge at Manchester United. He was a controversial figure as many supporters didn't feel the club progressed with the Dutchman at the helm, before his former understudy at Barcelona, Jose Mourinho, replaced him in May 2016 despite FA Cup final victory.

Marseille fail to reach Payet deal as West Ham demand £30m

    dimitri-payet-west-ham-united-31122016_7yy3xtgre13z1cp3sng9ip2hk.jpg

Marseille and West Ham have failed to strike a deal for Dimitri Payet despite holding talks in London on Monday, Goal understands.

The France star is said to have told the Hammers that he will not play for them again this season and has requested a transfer in the January window, with his former club the only team to have so far made a known offer.

Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud travelled to the English capital on Monday in an attempt to negotiate a deal for Payet but West Ham are holding out for a fee between £30 million and £35m and are refusing to budge on that valuation.

Some reports have suggested Payet would agree a switch this month but not move until the summer, finishing the 2016-17 campaign in the Premier League, but after a backlash from supporters West Ham would prefer to offload him immediately.

Despite reports claiming Marseille had submitted a second bid, however, a deal has not been reached.Mark Noble, West Ham's captain, admitted he had been angered by the Frenchman's decision to go on strike while the club determines his future."I am angry and disappointed, because I have always said that he is one of the best players I have ever played with," the midfielder said.

"I had - and I say had because I haven't really spoken to him for the last two or three weeks - a great relationship with him, but I don't know his reasons."Payet has made 17 starts in the Premier League this season, scoring twice, on top of seven appearances in the Europa League.

    Mike Dean demoted to Championship

    mike-dean-hd_wjhe0k3os2ld1hxj8dacoenuy.jpg

Mike Dean has been demoted to the Championship following fierce criticism of his officiating over the festive period.

The referee endured an eventful December, with his decisions to send off Sofiane Feghouli during West Ham’s clash with Manchester United, and his reticence to dismiss Ross Barkley during the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park also came under scrutiny.

While Dean has since refereed an FA Cup fixture between Tottenham and Aston Villa, and Stoke City’s victory over Sunderland, the official has been ordered to take a step away from the Premier League for a weekend.

Dean will be the man in the middle as Leeds United take on Barnsley in a Yorkshire derby.Leeds are currently third in the Championship table, seven points behind leaders Newcastle, while Barnsley lie 10th.

Inter 3-2 Bologna (2-2 AET): Candreva strikes to send Nerazzurri into Coppa quarters

    inter-celebrating-inter-bologna-coppa-italia_1cr0wqhrpv20p1jr813b6e1p2n.jpg

Substitute Antonio Candreva scored a 98th-minute winner to send Inter into the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia with an enthralling 3-2 home win over Bologna.

Inter, fresh from six successive victories prior to Tuesday's game, took the lead in magnificent fashion through Jeison Murillo, who produced a finish belying that of a centre half to convert Joao Mario's corner with a sensational overhead kick.

Joao Mario then combined with Rodrigo Palacio to make it 2-0, but Bologna were given hope three minutes before half-time courtesy of Blerim Dzemaili's deflected effort.

Stefano Pioli's men had numerous opportunities to put the game to bed in the second half and eventually paid the price for not taking them when Godfred Donsah headed Bologna level.

A decisive goal did not arrive inside 90 minutes, but in the first period of extra time Inter benefited from a deflection of their own as Candreva struck what proved to be the winner.Inter will now face the winner of Wednesday's contest between Candreva's old team Lazio and Genoa.

Brazil forward Gabriel Barbosa made his first start of what has been a torrid spell since joining from Santos and he forced Angelo Da Costa into the first meaningful save of the match. But Da Costa could do nothing but stand in admiration in the 33rd minute when Murillo met Joao Mario's delivery with a remarkable acrobatic finish.

The lead was doubled six minutes later, Joao Mario the architect again as his precise pass from the left flank found Palacio, who kept his composure to smartly tuck the ball into the bottom-left corner.

But Bologna halved the deficit shortly before the interval, launching a quick counter after an Inter attack came to an end when Barbosa surrendered possession and finishing off the move as Federico Di Francesco found Dzemaili, whose shot on the turn was deflected in by Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Joao Mario should have done better when presented with the chance to re-establish Inter's two-goal lead five minutes after the restart, but succeeded only in turning his header from Eder's cross wide of the left-hand post.

Da Costa then needed to be alert to prevent Palacio from doubling his tally from a corner and Eder bent wide from just inside the area as Inter continued to pile pressure on the Bologna goal.

Bologna remained a threat, though, Marios Oikonomou's wayward close-range header serving as a warning to Inter, but Da Costa was by far the busier of the two keepers, making further stops to thwart Palacio and Joao Mario.

Gabriel was withdrawn to a warm ovation from the Inter fans as he was replaced by Candreva, but the applause turned to jeers after the home side's profligacy was punished for a second time in the 73rd minute by Donsah, who left Juan Pablo Carrizo with no chance when he powered Adam Masina's far-post cross into the net with a fine header.

Inter laid siege to the Bologna goal in the closing stages, but could not ensure progression in normal time and lived dangerously themselves in extra time, Gary Medel making a goal-mouth clearance from a Di Francesco cross.

However, Bologna's defence remained suspect and Candreva capitalised by beating the excellent Da Costa after Mauro Icardi's ball across the face of goal had been inadvertently flicked into his path.

The visitors never looked like mounting another revival, Inter seeing out the result to keep hopes of a first trophy since the 2011 Coppa success alive.

Man Utd trigger Valencia contract extension clause

    bosman-2017-antonio-valencia_lfrdzjxt67x91qsy07nc3odkp.jpg

Manchester United have triggered the one-year extension clause in Antonio Valencia's contract, which will tie him to the club until June 2018.

Last week, the club announced that Marouane Fellaini had extended his stay at Old Trafford by a further 12 months, and on Tuesday Valencia followed suit.Having joined United from Wigan Athletic in 2009, the Ecuador international has made 271 appearances, scoring 21 goals.

Initially signed as a winger, Valencia has established himself as United's first-choice right-back, making 23 starts across all competitions under Jose Mourinho this season.

His major honours at Old Trafford include two Premier League titles, in 2011 and 2013, as well as the 2010 League Cup and last year's FA Cup triumph.

Mourinho has always been a fan of Valencia's ability and admitted earlier this season that he tried to sign him while in charge of Real Madrid.“I tried to sign Antonio a number of years ago, when I was at Madrid," he said.“Even though he was not playing right-back at the time, I thought he could be phenomenal in that position. As it was, United told me 'no chance!'

“I am not surprised by his form this season. He has been clean of injuries, save for an operation on his arm which did not keep him out for long, and I have also been able to keep him fresh by resting him in certain Europa League games."I think he is the right-back to give us the maximum we can in terms of our attacking football.”

Cavani: PSG can win the Champions League

    edinson-cavani_96r0wgmjk16a12t8r290hzwyr.jpg

PSG forward Edinson Cavani believes that anyone can win the Champions League, and is hoping this year will be PSG's turn to take the crown.

The Ligue 1 side have never lifted Europe's biggest trophy, with the 1996 Cup Winners' Cup their biggest continental achievement so far.

In the past two seasons they have won all four domestic trophies, but this term Cavani hopes the club can make a proper impact in Europe.

The 29-year-old is in discussions over a new contract in the French capital, and believes that anything can happen in football - particularly in the Champions League knockout stage."Winning the Champions League depends on many things. Only one team gets to win it, and in football, you never know," Cavani told Goal.

"Even if a team has the best players, it doesn't mean they will always win. See for example Atletico Madrid or Juventus, a very agressive team, that didn't seem to have a chance against the other with the best players of the world, but they got to the finals.

"I wish this year we win the Champions League, but if not, we will continue working hard to achieve that big goal."

Cavani is currently under contract until 2018, but is in negotations with the club about extending his stay until 2021.He is eager to agree a new deal with Unai Emery's side, and believes that PSG can become one of the best teams in the world in the next few years."One of the reasons that helped me make the decision to want to stay at PSG are the goals of the club," the Uruguay international continued.

"The team is growing and aims to be a big team, win big things, and become one of the best teams on the world."They are doing great work, and I appreciate that. All those objectives are appealing to me, and make me want to stay.

"I'd like to accomplish the goals with them and give the best I have. To stay and to be able to live that is special. That's the first thing I thought when I got to PSG and this beautiful city."

Van Gaal: Winning the FA Cup with Manchester United was my greatest achievement

    louis-van-gaal-cropped_1y058suvm4e1l1xk7api54ios3.jpg

Louis van Gaal says winning the FA Cup with Manchester United is his greatest managerial achievement due to the "inhumane" pressure he was put under by sections of the British media.

The Dutchman left the Red Devils despite the Wembley triumph to be replaced by Jose Mourinho, and he stated on Monday that United is likely his last job in coaching following a brilliant career in which he won La Liga with Barcelona, the Eredivisie with AZ, a domestic double at Bayern Munich, and three league titles and the Champions League with Ajax.

However, Van Gaal ranks his solitary trophy at United as his best due to the testing relationship he endured with the media in England. "Winning the FA Cup with Manchester United was my biggest achievement," Van Gaal told De Telegraaf.

"I spent the last six months of my time there on the scaffold, with my head in a noose. The English media were responsible for that.

"The pressure was inhumane at times and I had to stay true to my philosophy and keep motivating the players. When you still manage to win the FA Cup under such pressure, you are proud of it.

"Also because we lost a player to a red card in the final and were playing with 10 men in extra time. That makes the FA Cup a fantastic trophy for me. We faced so much resistance."

:)Rashford picks out his biggest role models at Manchester United

    marcus-rashford-manchester-united-premier-league-2016_1x9werq2rq6xl1l7qikro74iay.jpg

Marcus Rashford feels fortunate to have two of the finest strikers of the modern era to learn from at Manchester United.

The highly-rated forward enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2016, as he burst onto the domestic scene at Old Trafford and earned senior international recognition with England.Rashford is, however, still only 19 and aware that he has plenty to work on.He could not be in better company, though, with the youngster admitting that he considers two of his current team-mates to be ideal role models.

“Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] and [Wayne] Rooney are the two that stand out the most,” Rashford said at a boot launch in Germany.“Obviously I’ve grown up watching Rooney week in week, week out since I was young. They are the two you look at and try to emulate.”

If Rashford gets close to achieving what Rooney and Ibrahimovic have done in their respective careers then he will undoubtedly have fulfilled the potential he is showing at present.

Rooney is now the leading goalscorer for his country and level with the iconic Sir Bobby Charlton on United’s roll of honour.Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, is showing no sign of slowing down at the age of 35, with the enigmatic Swede considered by Rashford to be a key asset at Old Trafford.

He said: “For the young players coming up to see his character and the way he approaches every game and his mentality, it’s invaluable.“Some players can’t bring that when they move clubs so we have to try and learn from him while he’s here and take what we can out of his game.”

Ibrahimovic has been in remarkable form over recent months, with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday his 19th goal of the season – and his 13th in his last 13 appearances.

Rashford, meanwhile, has found the target just six times – with his last Premier League effort coming back in September – but Jose Mourinho has vowed to keep him around amid talk of a possible loan switch.

'You never know!' - Giroud open to future China move

    olivier-giroud-cropped_12zt2euzfztyi1j4kgvxhyycgc.jpg

Olivier Giroud says he could end up moving to China in the future, but insists he wants to be a Premier League champion with Arsenal first.

The Frenchman has won the FA Cup twice with the Gunners since making the switch from Montpellier in June 2012, but glory in the league has thus far evaded him.

There has been a big influx of talent making the move to China with the likes of Oscar, Axel Witsel, Carlos Tevez and John Obi Mikel among those to have transferred in January.

However, Giroud - who recently extended his contract at Emirates Stadium - is keen to prioritise winning further honours with Arsenal, regardless of how tempting an offer may arrive from China.

"Honestly, from my point of view I will tell you that I can understand," Giroud told reporters when asked about the recent big-money moves to China."But if you asked me if I want to go now I will tell you no."The Premier League is my main target, but once I have won the title one day, why not, you never know."

Giroud has scored 10 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions this term for Arsenal, who currently sit fourth in the Premier League - eight points behind leaders Chelsea ahead of Sunday's encounter with Burnley.

Plymouth 0-1 Liverpool: Leiva leaps to Reds' rescue

Lucas Leiva scored a rare goal as Liverpool scraped past Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in their FA Cup Third Round replay on Wednesday.Jurgen Klopp's men headed into the clash at Home Park on the back of their 0-0 draw at Anfield last time out.The Reds welcomed Philippe Coutinho back into the starting XI and it was his corner that found Leiva for the latter's headed winner in the 18th minute.

Divock Origi then had the opportunity to put the wraps on an unconvincing Liverpool performance right at the death, but sent his penalty straight into the arms of Luke McCormick.

The Premier League side had not lost any of their last 19 FA Cup games against teams from the fourth tier or lower, but they were pushed hard in a competitive clash at a packed Home Park.

Jake Jervis' speculative effort clipped the outside of the post prior to Origi's spot-kick miss and that was the closest Plymouth came to an equaliser.

Sturridge sent an effort over the crossbar and Coutinho mishit a volley as Liverpool controlled proceedings, as they had at Anfield 10 days ago when the sides drew 0-0, in the early stages.

Plymouth were undone after just 18 minutes when Coutinho delivered a left-wing corner and Lucas stole in front of marker Paul Garita to thump in a near-post header, the Brazilian netting for the first time since September 2010.

The hosts almost responded immediately, though, with Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius called into action to palm away a swerving Graham Carey drive.Plymouth went close again after 32 minutes when Oscar Threlkeld got in behind Alberto Moreno to cross, but Trent Alexander-Arnold made a fine challenge to deny Garita a shot on goal.

A speculative David Fox effort was easily saved by Karius in the first minute of the second half as Derek Adams' side showed more attacking ambition after the interval.Origi shot straight at Luke McCormick after 58 minutes as Liverpool struggled for cohesion, with the fit-again Coutinho guilty of wasting possession in good areas on multiple occasions.

A freak second goal almost arrived after 67 minutes as substitute Harry Wilson charged down a McCormick clearance, but the ball flew over to deny the 19-year-old a goal on his Liverpool debut.Plymouth hit the woodwork after 75 minutes, with Jervis acrobatically turning the ball goalwards with a sweet volley that had Karius beaten.

Liverpool should have made the victory safe with four minutes to go when Yann Songo'o brought down Moreno in the box, but McCormick dived low to his right to keep out Origi's poor penalty.
