Real Sociedad 0-1 Barcelona: Neymar ends Anoeta curse

    neymar-barcelona-2017_d8fcu8xnkl1519aawk759dqda.jpg

Neymar's first-half penalty saw holders Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 1-0 in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, ending their curse at the Anoeta.

Barca had failed to win their last eight matches at the Basque venue going into the first leg of this quarter-final tie, with their last victory coming back in 2007.But that unwanted streak ended after Neymar won and converted the spot-kick himself for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Barca, seeking a third consecutive Copa crown, are now in a strong position to progress ahead of the second leg at Camp Nou next Thursday. In LaLiga, only six points separate Barca and La Real, who face a tough task to continue their path towards a first final appearance since 1988.

While the two teams were evenly matched, with neither goalkeeper particularly busy, Barca held on in relative comfort, without Jasper Cillessen having a major save to make.

La Real gave Barca an early scare when Mikel Oyarzabal curled just wide after Samuel Umtiti lost possession, before Neymar - back as one of seven Barca changes - forced the match's first save from Geronimo Rulli at the other end.

It was the visitors, on a high after thumping Las Palmas 5-0 on last Saturday, who struck first, Neymar winning the spot-kick by surging into the box and drawing a clear trip from Aritz Elustondo. The Brazil forward took it himself and sent Rulli the wrong way in the 21st minute for only his eighth goal of the season.

Asier Illarramendi fired a deflected effort narrowly wide following good work from Willian Jose, but La Real went into the break behind.Andre Gomes replaced Andres Iniesta at the interval, while Neymar made a poor start to the second half.

First, his lack of control wasted an opportunity to test Rulli after he was sent through on goal, before he collected Messi's flick, cut inside and curled wide from a good shooting opportunity.

Messi - already booked for timewasting - avoided a second yellow when Real played a quick free-kick against him and later survived again despite fouling Raul Navas as Eusebio Sacristan's men chased an equaliser.

But Neymar did receive punishment from referee Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez, who booked him for diving after he went down under Rulli's challenge.

Yuri's cross-shot only just evaded the far post for the hosts, and Illarramendi headed narrowly over, but Cillessen was not seeing much of the action and did not have a second-half save to make.

Rulli was similarly unoccupied, Messi curling a free-kick over, while Nemyar was perhaps fortunate to avoid a second yellow for a high boot on Elustondo as the visitors secured a one-goal advantage.

    Iniesta suffers calf injury

Andres Iniesta suffered a calf injury in Barcelona's Copa del Rey victory over Real Sociedad.Barca confirmed after the first leg of the quarter-final tie that the midfielder had suffered the problem to his left calf and will undergo medical tests on Friday.

Iniesta, 32, had been replaced by Andre Gomes at half-time, the latest blow in a season that has been interrupted by two knee injuries.

The match itself saw Luis Enrique's holders win 1-0, ending their curse at the Anoeta with a first win in nine attempts courtesy of Neymar's first-half penalty, delighting Sergio Busquets.

"The team did themselves proud," Busquests said after the game."However, the tie is still to be decided. They [Real Sociead] are a good team."The two teams play in the second leg at Camp Nou next Thursday, with Barca continuing their bid for a third straight Copa crown.

Memphis set to join Lyon in next ’48 hours’, says Aulas

    hd-memphis-depay_sreaep1joska16ube73zgbu1u.jpg

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says the club are 48 hours away from completing a “complicated” deal for Manchester United winger Memphis Depay.

The Netherlands international is set to leave the Red Devils for the Ligue 1 side after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old will now attempt to revive his career in Lyon and Aulas has explained how much his club are set to pay and when they hope to complete the deal.

"For the moment, we are in agreement in principle but we still need to write the contract up, which is a bit complicated because there are a fair amount of bonuses,” he told RMC Sport.

“It was big operation, because it will be worth around €16.5m (£14.2m) plus €8m (£6.9m) in bonuses. "This is a big investment. Manchester United bought him from PSV for €34m plus €8m.

"I believe that a certain amount of the bonuses are due to PSV following a transfer. There is a whole load of literature to be written and that is what is happening between both clubs at the moment.

"But we are used to working with Manchester United, they are a very structured club who, generally, stick to their word. "We worked with them for the arrival of Rafael, a little while earlier. It is in progress, but I think it will require another 48 hours for him to be registered.”

Aulas also says that Depay is the perfect signing for the French club and can bring flair to a side that is currently fourth in the table.“It was a dream, because he corresponds exactly with the player we were looking for. In addition, he has a certain panache,” he added

"It is true that Jose Mourinho did not play him that much, so there was an opportunity that we took when we negotiated with the representatives of Manchester United.”

West Ham to offer in-demand Antonio new deal

    hd-michail-antonio_qgzlt3xceu5t1526z3ilyolbv.jpg

Chelsea are among those to have been linked with Michail Antonio of late, but West Ham are planning to hand the in-form midfielder a new contract. The 26-year-old has been in dazzling form for the Hammers this season, having a hand in more goals than any other player in Slaven Bilic’s squad.

He was particularly inspired in his most recent outing, with three assists seeing him play a leading role in a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace.Antonio has eclipsed the efforts of wantaway forward Dimitri Payet, with the Frenchman certainly not missed against the Eagles.

West Ham are, however, aware that a man who has already received call-ups to the England squad is attracting interest from afar and they intend to fend off those admiring glances with fresh terms.

Bilic said ahead of a Saturday showdown with Middlesbrough: “He was very good for us last season and he has continued to do it for us this season and when players are playing like that, at a good age as well, then a lot of clubs – at least in the papers – are interested in them and that puts them in a good position for a new deal.“He definitely deserves it, so it’s a club decision together with my own but for me he has a big-time green light to sign a new deal with us!

“The players have deals, but he is the player who came last season to us and he has improved a lot and came from being a player for the future to one who we gave a chance to one of our most important players."Antonio was snapped up from Nottingham Forest in 2015 with no Premier League experience to his name.

He has starred among the top-flight elite, though, netting nine times in all competitions last season and adding another eight goals to that tally this term.

David Villa backs Guardiola to end 'difficult' Man City spell

David Villa has backed Pep Guardiola to come through a “difficult period” at Manchester City, labelling him as a "great coach".

The former Barcelona boss enjoyed a positive start to his time in the Premier League, but has since seen his side go off the boil.City are now sat fifth in the English top-flight table, 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Guardiola appeared to throw in the title towel after suffering a humbling 4-0 defeat at Everton last time out, with a top-four finish now the priority for those at the Etihad.

More was expected of a man who won trophies aplenty at Barca and Bayern Munich, but Villa is convinced that he will come good if given the time to adjust to new surroundings.

The ex-Spain international, who is now on the books at MLS side New York City, said: "He has a difficult period right now but I believe he will change the situation.

"(It) is normal to have a difficult period with the team, but he is great and I think he has a methodology and he has a very good coaching staff to change the situation and the future (at City) will be better for sure.

"Soccer is difficult in every country and I am so lucky that I was able to play for Guardiola. He is a great coach, for everyone who likes soccer. But in soccer it is difficult to win and he has almost always won. His statistics are amazing.”

Villa still credits Guardiola with making him a better player during his time at Camp Nou, with the 35-year-old having tasted domestic and European success under the Catalan coach.

He added: "I was lucky to train under him. When I arrived at Barcelona I had always played as a number nine and when I played with him he changed my position and my mentality and after that I think I was a better player."I was able to understand more about different positions on the field and not only about scoring goals. He was great for my career.”

Gabriel Jesus will make Premier League history - Rivaldo

    gabrieljesus-cropped_1ngaifb92i0s61roegij589twk.jpg

Brazil great Rivaldo has backed Gabriel Jesus to make Premier League history at Manchester City after completing his switch from Palmeiras.

City formally presented the 19-year-old on Thursday, having signed him from the Brazilian champions in August, and he could make his debut at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

The arrival of Jesus could provide City with the boost they need after slipping down to fifth in the table following their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Everton last time out.

Rivaldo believes the youngster will become an integral part of Pep Guardiola's plans, but has told City fans to give him time to settle into his new surroundings.
"He is a future player," said Rivaldo, who was speaking at Betfair's #MagicOfBarca campaign.

"He is a new player, 19 years old, and he has been playing in England football which is difficult football, not easy, you need to wait a bit to adapt to the cold. "But he's a player I think will make history in English football, because he's a great player.

"I think the fans need to have a little patience, especially for their age, but from what I've seen him playing in Brazil, he's a great player."

Southampton's Fonte closes in on £12m West Ham switch

    hd-jose-fonte-southampton_j00l5jdrvmaq1vsdl07qr1mzf.jpg

West Ham are closing in on a deal to sign Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte, Goal understands.

The Hammers are in advanced talks to bring the Portuguese defender to the London Stadium this month and have agreed an initial fee of £8 million, potentially rising to £12 million, with the St Mary's outfit.Fonte has been offered a two-and-a-half year deal from West Ham, with £70,000 per week in wages.

The Southampton skipper declared his future away from the club earlier in the season following his successful Euro 2016 campaign with Portugal in the summer.

Speculation surrounding the 33-year-old's future saw him linked with Jose Mourinho's Manchester United as his countryman went about shoring up his defensive unit, though rumours soon deteriorated once the Red Devils' form picked up.

Southampton boss Claude Puel has since secluded Fonte from his first-team squads, though the Frenchman insists he has remained professional throughout.

Aubameyang: I could leave Dortmund, but I'd never join Bayern

    pierre-emerick-aubameyang_bu0ym1ml6ulk1moa5df9cmzl6.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang admits he could leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season but has ruled out Bayern Munich as a potential destination.

Aubameyang has long been linked with a move away from Signal Iduna Park, with Real Madrid and Manchester City thought to be among his admirers.

The Gabon captain "100 per cent" ruled out a January switch but concedes his future is far from clear."No one can predict the future," he told Fussball Bild. "The only thing for sure is that I'm currently with Dortmund and I love it there.

"But I cannot say that I'll stay for another two, five or 10 years. It is possible that in June a club comes to an agreement with Dortmund."At the moment I really don't think about it. I focus only on the work with my team-mates with Dortmund and Gabon."

The availability of one of the world's top strikers - Aubameyang has scored 20 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions this season - could pique the interest of Bundesliga leaders Bayern. However, Aubameyang says a move to Dortmund's rivals is out of the question, adding: "Never would I switch to Bayern."

Aubameyang is currently captaining Gabon on home soil at the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring in each of their opening two 1-1 draws against Guinea-Bissau and Burkina Faso.

Lyon have confirmed the signing of winger Memphis Depay from Manchester United.Goal understands the Ligue 1 outfit have paid an initial fee of £15 million for the Netherlands international, though that could rise to £21.7m.

Memphis joined United from PSV in the summer of 2015 but struggled to hold down a regular place under both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

He leaves Old Trafford just 18 months into his four-year contract having scored just seven goals in 56 appearances for the 20-time English champions.

He has made just eight substitute appearances for the Red Devils this season, with his Premier League outings amounting to just 20 minutes of action, and becomes the second high-profile departure from United in the January transfer window following Morgan Schneiderlin's move to Everton.

Memphis will wear the No.9 shirt for his new club and could make his debut against Marseille on Sunday.

Mourinho: Valencia is the best right-back in the world

    antonio-valencia-manchester-united-2016_11s7elxbyerfo1fe58mfi25ptw.jpg

Jose Mourinho believes that Manchester United right-back Antonio Valencia is the best in his position in world football. The Ecuadorian has emerged as one of the first names on the team-sheet under Mourinho at Old Trafford, despite having only been converted into a full-back in 2015.

Valencia recently signed a new deal at Old Trafford to take him through to 2018 and his manager does not think there is a better right-sided defender in the game.

When asked if Valencia's form was the reason for his new deal, Mourinho told MUTV: "I don’t think it is a reward, I don't see it in this perspective. I just think he is the best right-back you can have.

"There is no better right-back in football. It is just for us to keep the best. I don't think it is a reward. It is a privilege for us to have such a good player and such a good man."

The United manager also reiterated that he wanted to sign Valencia for Real Madrid and that he thinks that he is currently playing the best football of his career.

Mourinho added: “He was not playing at right-back [at the time Mourinho wanted him at Madrid]. Yes, I wanted him to play at right-back."But Manchester United was intelligent and strong, and immediately stopped any feeling about any possibility."Antonio is playing better than ever, I think. This season he is playing magnificently.”

Valencia has made 23 starts in all competitions for United in the 2016-17 campaign, with the 31-year-old set to feature as Mourinho's men face Stoke City on Saturday.

'It used to happen to me' - Zidane defends Ronaldo after dip in form

    hd-cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_1xrsk1itltokj1wzrf2pl0ahn6.jpg

Zinedine Zidane has defended Cristiano Ronaldo from criticism of his declining Real Madrid form, insisting that "it used to happen to me".

The Portugal star drew a blank in his side's 2-1 Copa del Rey defeat by Celta Vigo on Wednesday and his all-round contribution has been scrutinised in recent games.

His coach is adamant that Ronaldo is accustomed to dealing with critics and says that a drop-off in standards should be expected for any player at the top level of the game.

"Cristiano will always be criticised: when he does not score, when he plays in a different position... He's used to it. He's focused on the Malaga match and nothing else," Zidane told reporters on Friday.

"He's always going to be the player who makes the difference for this team.Sometimes he can play worse; it used to happen to me. The important thing is to keep working."

Zidane was more frustrated with the treatment of full-back Danilo, who was targeted by sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during the loss to Celta.

"The criticism of Danilo is unfair," he continued. "It's not so much the fans, who aren't only booing Danilo. It's especially what they write about him - it's not fair."He's a professional, he always gives 100 per cent. He can do better, of course, like everyone."

Madrid host Malaga in La Liga on Saturday looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats with a win that would put pressure on Sevilla and Barcelona - both of whom play on Sunday - behind them.

"The good thing is that we have a game to change the situation. We've had little time to recover but we're ready," the Frenchman remarked. "The dressing-room is fine, we're not worried. "We're not going to go crazy. We're going to work to do things better. The only thing wrong against Celta was that they had two chances and we conceded twice.

"There's no such thing as not being able to lose any more. We'll leave this [40-game unbeaten] streak behind, with conviction. I'm under pressure but I was already when I joined this club. I'll always have it, until the last day I'm here. It makes me grow stronger every day."

James Rodriguez has once again been ruled out with a calf problem but Zidane expects the Colombia international to resume full training next week."James has a problem with his calf. We hope he can be with us on Monday," he added.

Guardiola: Aguero asked for restaurant talks

    sergio-aguero-pep-guardiola-manchester-city-champions-league-20160914_ar4rdw3mvb3k1enhk2ebxqwxk.jpg

Pep Guardiola has revealed that his meeting with Sergio Aguero came at the striker's request, though the Manchester City boss insists it was anything out of the ordinary.

Guardiola, Aguero and the striker's agent held late night discussions in a Manchester restaurant on Thursday evening.Mystery surrounds Aguero's contract situation at City, given he is believed to have signed an extension to his current deal almost exactly a year ago.

There has been no official confirmation of that agreement, however, and there are other factors, including City's pursuit of other big-name strikers, which suggest Aguero's long-term future at the club is far from assured. When questioned about the meeting at his Friday press conference, Guardiola insisted Aguero's contract situation was not up for discussion.

"No," he said. "We didn’t speak about the contract. He has a long contract here.
"He has a lot of money. He wanted to invite his coach to have dinner. That's what it is."

PSG still on the hunt for a striker, says Emery

    hd-edinson-cavani-paris-saint-germain_1px4so0jk0qgn1br3hfwqmvq8q.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery says that the French giants still hope to sign a striker before the close of the transfer window.

The Ligue 1 champions spent a reported €42 million (£36.4m) on attacking midfielder Julian Draxler but are said to be keen to bring in a player to provide competition for Edinson Cavani at the tip of the spear.

Director of football Patrick Kluivert stated earlier in January that at least one more player will arrive before the end of the month, though he insisted that PSG will not buy for the sake of buying. And Emery says that they are still on the hunt for a centre forward who can bring sufficient quality to the squad.

"My words don't change. The club has said the same. If the market offers us a player who can improve us, we're open to it," he told the media on Friday.

"You need competition, two players per position. The performances grow with competition. We're still looking."Jese Rodriguez has been widely expected to leave Parc des Princes but no deal has been agreed as yet, despite reported interest from Middlesbrough this week.

Emery says that he has spoken to the former Real Madrid man about the possibility of a loan move, though he would not specify any potential suitors."I talked with him because, like [Layvin] Kurzawa, he is ill, he has a fever," said the Spaniard. "I wanted to talk to him about his situation, about a possible loan. We have to find the best solution for him and the team."

PSG travel to Nantes on Saturday looking to put further pressure on Ligue 1's top two, Monaco and Nice, although Emery expects a difficult game against a team who have won their last four league games without conceding a goal.

"Nantes are confident - it'll be a tough match," he said. "They play well together, they press well and they have an effective transition into attack. It's a good match for us to show our progress."

Freiburg 1-2 Bayern Munich: Last-minute Lewandowski earns win

    sc-freiburg-fc-bayern-20170120-costa-lewandowski_1q6ce3h4quuog1jru1jdbkv4h8.jpg

Robert Lewandowski scored a dramatic late winner as his double helped Bayern Munich resume the Bundesliga season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Freiburg on Friday.

Janik Haberer had put the hosts in front in just the fourth minute at Schwarzwald-Stadion only for Lewandowski to restore parity for the leaders before half-time.
It appeared as though Bayern were going to be frustrated in their search for a winner, as several chances went begging.

But Lewandowski came to the rescue with a fine 91st-minute winner from Franck Ribery's cross to ensure the Bavarians picked up after the mid-season break with a big three points.Carlo Ancelotti's men have now won six consecutive league matches and open up a six-point buffer over second-place RB Leipzig, who host Frankfurt on Saturday.

Freiburg had won five of seven home league matches heading into the contest and they were rewarded for a positive start in just the fourth minute thanks in part to some unconvincing Bayern defending.

Mats Hummels' poor attempted clearance fell at Vincenzo Grifo's feet who immediately released Haberer down the right and he held off David Alaba before beating goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with a low shot from inside the area.

Bayern came close to an equaliser on the half hour when Arturo Vidal controlled Arjen Robben's cross and unleashed a curling shot towards the far corner that Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow only just pushed wide.

Lewandowski was stopped by Mike Frantz's last-ditch tackle after a good cross from Douglas Costa, but the Poland striker was on target from the resulting corner.

Costa swung in the delivery and the prolific striker's acrobatic effort was too powerful for Schwolow.

Bayern went in search of a second goal after the break and Thomas Muller could have made it 2-1 after some good work from Robben, the Germany international seeing his shot hit an opponent before bouncing wide for a corner.Robben continued to cause the Freiburg defence trouble and he went close after a trademark curled left-footed shot after cutting in from the right, which drew a superb save from Schwolow.

Ancelotti brought on Ribery for Costa in an attempt to force a winner and Robben came close to doing just that after a howler from Schwolow, only for the Dutchman to aim his shot wide.

But Bayern did steal all three points when Lewandowski struck in the closing seconds, controlling Ribery's cross from the left on his chest before poking home in the bottom corner.

Stoke City have completed the signing of West Brom striker Saido Berahino for a fee of £12 million.

West Brom released a statement on Friday confirming that a deal had been agreed with their Premier League rivals and Stoke have now finalised the transfer.Berahino has long-since been a transfer target for Mark Hughes and the Stoke boss finally has his man, with the 23-year-old signing a five-and-a-half-year deal at the bet365 Stadium.

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes told the club's official website: "It's no secret that we have been looking to bring Saido to the club for a long time and to suggest that we are pleased to have finally concluded the deal is an understatement."We've signed a young English striker who has already proven his ability in the Premier League."After a frustrating period he's now desperately keen to reignite his career and we look forward to seeing him do that with us."

Berahino has become a peripheral figure at The Hawthorns this season and concerns over his fitness and attitude have seen him make just five appearances in all competitions this term.

The former England Under-21 international has not played for West Brom since September and on two occasions he was sent to training camps in France in a bid to boost his fitness.Tottenham had previously been interested in a move for Berahino, but a move to White Hart Lane failed to materialise.

Berahino scored 20 goals in 45 appearances during a breakout 2014-15 campaign, but he has thus far failed to recapture that form.

West Ham have completed the signing of Southampton defender Jose Fonte for an initial £8 million. As Goal reported yesterday, the fee paid by the Hammers could rise to £12m with add-ons.

Fonte had signalled his desire to leave St Mary's Stadium by handing in a transfer request earlier this month and West Ham quickly emerged as favourites for his signature.

They have now confirmed that the Euro 2016 winner with Portugal has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at London Stadium, with the option of a further 12 months.

"I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are," Fonte told West Ham's official website."The manager was also a very big influence. I thought that he really wanted me and that he sold me the project and the ambition of the club.

"I also have part of my family living in London and they are big West Ham fans. It just made sense for me at this stage to join West Ham. It is a new challenge and a new beginning and I am looking forward to it.

"With the way that West Ham is going we can only look to be challenging in the top eight."I told the manager in conversations that we want to win and we want to win trophies. The ambition is big and we need to aim high.

"West Ham are a massive club and it is an exciting challenge and it should be for everyone. We all need to get together and start working."Fonte joined Southampton in 2010 from Crystal Palace and the 33-year-old centre-back climbed from League One to the Premier League with the Saints, before making his international debut in 2014.

He had been linked with a move to Manchester United following his success in helping Portugal win their first major trophy at the European Championship, while Liverpool were also thought to be among his suitors. However, Fonte has opted for a move to the capital and joins a West Ham side who are 12th in the Premier League.
