Aubameyang style 'fits Real Madrid perfectly' says Schuster

    pierre-emerick-aubameyang_bu0ym1ml6ulk1moa5df9cmzl6.jpg

Former Real Madrid midfielder Berndt Schuster believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would fit in perfectly at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Borussia Dortmund forward revealed that he would be interested in moving to La Liga following speculation that Zinedine Zidane's side are eager to bring the Bundesliga's top scorer to Spain.

Schuster, who won two league titles with Madrid, has backed the Gabon international to be a success at the club, but feels that he could find it difficult to break into the starting XI.

"In my opinion his style fits Real Madrid perfectly. In their midfield there are very good players, especially Toni Kroos," the European Championship winner told Sport1."For a while there has been a little unrest, and Real is not happy with its attack. Something will surely happen during the summer.

"There is no guarantee Aubameyang can play a major role in Madrid. It is a shark tank where you have to pull through."There is Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale and all these other guys. With that competition you have to be very hungry and play well on a permanent basis."

Despite the obstacles Aubameyang may face getting into Zidane's preferred line-up, Schuster thinks that the 27-year-old has the right attitude to challenge for a place and win trophies.

"He has the desire to win the big titles. I consider it a good thing he says he has to go to a world class club that dominated in Europe for the last decades," Schuster continued.

"Florentino Perez is someone who does these deals without talking too much. It was like that in the past and it will be like that now, too. You won't hear much about it and suddenly the player is signed."

Bad news for Barcelona as banned Neymar to miss Atletico Madrid second leg

    neymar-barcelona-2017_18hmnkpm0dk87zh9f1markkdh.jpg

Neymar will miss the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg meeting with Atletico Madrid after picking up a booking at Vicente Calderon on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian was shown a yellow card in the 64th minute after jumping into Atletico defender Juanfran during an aerial tussle.Barcelona had been in dominant form during the first half after goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi had given the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead.

Antoine Griezmann replied for Atletico just before the hour mark and Neymar then collected the caution which will rule him out of next week's return at Camp Nou.Neymar went close twice in the final minutes, but could not find the target as Barcelona recorded a 2-1 first-leg victory.

The 24-year-old has now gone three games without scoring for Luis Enrique's side, and has just five goals in 16 La Liga appearances.

Neymar has a return of 24 and 22 league goals in his previous two campaigns, having scored nine times in his first season after signing from Santos. He was on target in the Copa del Rey quarter-final victory over Real Sociedad, netting from the penalty spot in the first leg.

West Ham 0-4 Manchester City: Jesus impresses in big win

    gabiel-jesus-kevin-de-bruyne-manchester-city-01022017_1ds2x6xkipcu41jtoyidxca2w6.jpg

Gabriel Jesus starred with a goal and an assist on his first Premier League start as Manchester City romped to a 4-0 victory at West Ham.

Pep Guardiola made two bold selection decisions in leaving Claudio Bravo and Sergio Aguero on the substitutes' bench and was rewarded with only a second top-flight victory in five attempts.

Kevin De Bruyne put City ahead with his fourth league goal of the season having been set up by Jesus. David Silva swiftly doubled the visitors' lead with his second goal of the league campaign and Jesus struck himself before the break.

Yaya Toure added gloss to the scoreline with a second-half penalty, the midfielder's fourth strike for City since Boxing Day.Guardiola's side had thumped West Ham 5-0 in the FA Cup last month and were similarly dominant here.

City now move level on points with fourth-placed Liverpool and to within 10 of leaders Chelsea. West Ham stay 11th after their two-match winning streak was brought to an emphatic halt.

Both sides had early half chances, Raheem Sterling volleying wide for City before Michail Antonio shot straight at Willy Caballero – selected over Bravo – from 25 yards at the other end.

City struck first after 17 minutes when Aaron Cresswell lost possession with a terrible pass, as De Bruyne, one of three players brought back into Guardiola's team, finished confidently from just inside the area following an excellent one-two with Jesus.

It was two for the visitors just four minutes later. Leroy Sane was the creator, impressively gliding past Sam Byram and debutant Jose Fonte before his deflected square pass found its way to Silva, who tapped in from inside the six-yard box.City were rampant and Sterling headed off-target from close range after Sane and Silva had combined to create the opportunity.

West Ham threatened to respond, but Cresswell's miserable evening continued as he lashed an effort over with only Caballero to beat having been set up by Andy Carroll's impressive lofted pass.

And City put the result beyond doubt six minutes before the break, the superb Jesus rounding off a slick team move that saw Sterling latch on to Sane's pass before squaring for the Brazil international to finish simply with a low, left-footed strike.

Jesus fired wide after more good work from Sane early in a second half that started with fewer fireworks than the first.Slaven Bilic handed Robert Snodgrass his debut from the bench, but City added a fourth before the winger could make an impact.

De Bruyne's pass released Sterling and the England international was fouled by Fonte – who was having a debut to forget – in the area, with Toure's low 67th-minute spot-kick too good for Darren Randolph, despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it having correctly dived to his right.

Aguero was given 17 minutes off the bench from Guardiola, while West Ham's hopes of a consolation were thwarted when Antonio's thumping strike was ruled out after he strayed offside from Snodgrass' pass, City cruising to victory with Caballero barely troubled.

Rennes 0-4 PSG: Draxler double sends Parisians through

    julian-draxler-psg-01022017_40fhkhofu1oh185zcr74dc3jt.jpg

Julian Draxler's fine start to his Paris Saint-Germain career continued as his double helped the Coupe de France holders cruise into the last 16 with a routine 4-0 victory at Rennes.

PSG are seeking a third successive treble having achieved the feat twice under Laurent Blanc and, though they face a stern challenge from Monaco and Nice to retain their Ligue 1 title, Unai Emery's men took another step towards a successful defence of this competition in Brittany.

The big-money signing of the January transfer window for PSG, Draxler has quickly justified the club's outlay and took his tally to four goals in five games with this double.

Draxler's exquisite lob broke the deadlock midway through the first half, and a straightforward finish from Lucas Moura made it 2-0 before the interval. The visitors had chances to add gloss to the scoreline after the restart as Rennes never looked like mounting a comeback.

Draxler's curling effort put the game beyond doubt in the 68th minute and Hatem Ben Arfa rounded off the scoring, with PSG's attentions returning to the league on Saturday as they visit Dijon looking to cut the three-point gap to leaders Monaco and Nice.Rennes were the first to threaten an opener when Giovanni Sio curled a left-footed free-kick narrowly over the bar.

But a largely dour first half was lit up in the 27th minute as Draxler collected a superb long ball from Thiago Motta, controlling the ball with the back of his heel and then lofting it over Benoit Costil and in off the post.Lucas flashed an effort across the face of goal and wide of the left-hand post but he did double PSG's lead seven minutes before half-time.

Ben Arfa - given a rare start by Emery - produced an excellent low cross and Lucas arrived at the far post to tap in a simple finish.

Ben Arfa had the chance to turn from provider to goalscorer, but could not make proper contact with a delivery from the left as PSG's dominance continued.

Christopher Nkunku spurned a gilt-edged chance to make it 3-0 as he somehow fired wide from close range, with Rennes reduced to long-range efforts at the other end in their bid to get back into it.Sio and Sanjin Prcic both tried their luck from distance, but the game was made safe by Draxler's assured finish.

The Germany international bent into the bottom-right corner from just outside the area and Julian Draxler PSG 01022017 added late gloss to the scoreline, slamming home a fourth after a quickly-taken free-kick.

Having progressed through this tie without having to use Edinson Cavani or Thiago Silva, PSG will have their big guns fresh for the next game in a compelling title race.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona: Messi & Suarez put Catalans in Copa control

    messi-gomes-suarez-atletico-madrid-barcelona-copa-del-rey_1mtfrremkjn7h1x7sc9v7y8qey.jpg

Barcelona took a big step towards another Copa del Rey final with a 2-1 first-leg victory against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

First-half strikes from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez secured the victory that puts the holders in control of the semi-final ahead of the return match at Camp Nou next Tuesday.

Diego Simeone's side have had success against Barca in recent years with a devastating counterattacking style, but they were on the receiving end of the same tactic early in the first half and were punished by a brilliant run and finish from Suarez with only seven minutes played.Messi made it 2-0 with a ferocious strike from the edge of the penalty area to silence the Calderon and leave Atletico facing a mountain to climb.

The 2013 winners did show some improvement after the break, however, and Antoine Griezmann halved the deficit just shy the hour mark before missing a clear chance to level the scores moments later.

But Barca - who almost snatched a third through a Messi free-kick - held firm in the closing stages to see out a crucial win that will make them firm favourites to reach a fourth final in as many seasons.

Luis Enrique - still unable to call on Sergio Busquets or Andres Iniesta - named a robust midfield of Javier Mascherano, Ivan Rakitic and Andre Gomes. And it was a Mascherano challenge on halfway that allowed Suarez to open the scoring.

The Argentine's sliding challenge sent the ball into Suarez's path and the striker drove at the heart of the Atleti defence, slipped the ball around Stefan Savic and prodded low past Miguel Angel Moya and into the corner of the net.

Atleti responded well, but Barca, content to sit back and hit on the break, almost got a second midway through the half when Neymar cut into the box and shot straight at Moya.

Neymar and Suarez nearly combined to good effect in the penalty area, but Messi followed a more direct route to double the lead 12 minutes before half-time, blasting a left-foot shot in off Moya's right-hand post from the edge of the area.

Koke arrowed a shot just over four minutes before half-time and the Spain midfielder combined superbly with substitute Fernando Torres to move clean through on goal moments after the restart, only for Jordi Alba to make a crucial covering block just as he pulled the trigger.

Griezmann had been starved of service for much of the first hour, but he handed the hosts a lifeline in the tie as Atleti punished some slack Barca defending with a route one set-piece.

Koke flighted a free-kick from near the centre circle to the left side of the penalty area and after Diego Godin - who was completely unmarked - headed the ball across goal, Griezmann rose highest to nod it into the net from six yards.

Jasper Cillessen stood up well to block what looked a certain second for Griezmann, who shot straight at the Netherlands goalkeeper following Filipe Luis' cut-back, as Atleti began to attack in earnest with the Vicente Calderon roaring its approval.

Moya clawed a dipping Messi free-kick away from the top corner and Neymar blasted a presentable chance over the crossbar as Atleti committed men into the attack, before the Brazilian fired another set-piece over Moya's goal from close range.

Simeone urged his players forward in the final few minutes and Torres twice shot inches wide of the post when picked out in space in the area, but there was to be no late leveller for Atleti, who face a huge task to overturn the aggregate deficit when they visit Camp Nou next week.

Stoke City 1-1 Everton: Toffees hold Potters at the Britannia

    ryan-shawcross-stoke-city-referee-craig-pawson-01022016_4xyz5w6frplf15fs3p2js1t3r.jpg

Peter Crouch's 100th Premier League goal was not enough for Stoke City to overcome Everton as the two in-form sides drew 1-1 at the Britannia Stadium. The 36-year-old striker reached his century early in the game from close range, and celebrated in nostalgic fashion with his trademark robot celebration.

Crouch was impressive throughout the game, but he and Marko Arnautovic spurned chances to extend the hosts' lead in a dominant first-half performance before a Ryan Shawcross own-goal salvaged a point for Everton.

It was initially chalked off for offside, only for the decision to be reversed after referee Craig Pawson correctly ruled that Seamus Coleman's strike had struck the Stoke skipper and not Romelu Lukaku on its way into the net.

Stoke are now four league games unbeaten while Everton are six in the top flight without defeat. The hosts were fastest out of the traps and Crouch reached his ton after just seven minutes when he slid home at close range from a pinpoint Arnautovic pass.

Everton's defence, watertight in their last three league games, were caught napping by a hopeful long ball that freed the Austria international on the left-hand side of the penalty area.

The veteran striker went agonisingly close to making it 2-0 after 25 minutes, catching Arnautovic's cushioned header sweetly on the volley, only to see his strike whistle past the post.

Joel Robles then charged down an Arnautovic effort as Stoke continued to dominate.Everton struggled to match Stoke's intensity and were fortunate to draw level five minutes before the interval thanks to Pawson's change of heart.

Ronald Koeman introduced James McCarthy for Mason Holgate at half-time, abandoning his side's 3-5-2 shape, making Everton much more effective in inhibiting Stoke's attacking play.

Stoke were limited to two audacious Charlie Adam attempts from long-range to catch out Robles, and Crouch headed over just after the hour.Mark Hughes brought on Saido Berahino for his Stoke debut in the 66th minute, though it was Everton's January signing Ademola Lookman who made an immediate impact from the bench, forcing Lee Grant into a smart save at his near post.

Both teams had chances to win it inside the final five minutes. Berahino almost marked his debut with the decisive goal, lifting the ball over an onrushing Robles only for Ramiro Funes Mori to head to safety from below his bar.

His team-mates then owed thanks to Grant for safeguarding the point, improbably clawing away a goalbound Tom Davies header in the final stages as both sides had to settle for the a draw.

:(Manchester United 0-0 Hull City: Red Devils fail to close gap on top four

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-man-utd_12mfi5gkcat8z1gcrl920jxkxf.jpg

Manchester United remain four points off the Premier League's top four after being held to a 0-0 draw by Hull City at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils struggled for fluency throughout against Marco Silva's side and the result could have been worse for them if a superb effort from Lazar Markovic late on had not caught the post.

United's best chance fell to Juan Mata, who appeared certain to score at the far post when Chris Smalling headed across goal only for Eldin Jakupovic to make a stunning save.

Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool all failed to win in their respective league outings on Tuesday but with Manchester City beating West Ham, Jose Mourinho's men remain adrift in the race for Champions League qualification.

Mourinho opted to start Marcus Rashford on the left despite Anthony Martial's impressive performance in the FA Cup, with Wayne Rooney then introduced from the bench at half-time.The England captain failed to make much of an impact, however, leaving United winless in three Premier League matches.

After a disjointed opening, United began to exert control in the 15th minute – their purpose signified by Zlatan Ibrahimovic's 25-yard drive, which was tipped around the post by Jakupovic.

They then crafted another opportunity from the resulting corner, but Marcos Rojo headed over after Henrikh Mkhitaryan's delivery was brilliantly flicked back into the danger zone by Rashford.

United's dominance in possession showed no sign of letting up and Hull spent prolonged periods camped in their own area. But the hosts did not create another chance until the 35th minute, with Pogba teeing up Ibrahimovic on the edge of the area for what was ultimately a scuffed left-footed effort straight to Jakupovic.

The goalkeeper was given significantly more of a test just before the break but again he denied United, as Pogba latched on to Ibrahimovic's clever backheel and saw his left-footed strike pushed away.

Jose Mourinho looked to add extra invention to United's attack by replacing Michael Carrick with Rooney at the start of the second period.

But it was Pogba who inspired their next chance 10 minutes later with a long ball over the Hull defence to pick out Rashford, who could only scuff wide despite a marvellous first touch.

Rashford was involved again shortly after, heading Antonio Valencia's cross into the danger zone only for Ibrahimovic to half-volley just wide from eight yards after Rooney completely missed the ball.

United should have gone in front 16 minutes from time but again Jakupovic came to Hull's rescue, denying substitute Mata from point-blank range after Smalling headed a corner across the face of goal.

In the end it was Hull who went closest, with only the post preventing Markovic from making an already frustrating outing even worse for Mourinho after the end of a swift break.

:(:sorry:'It was a bad finish' - Ibrahimovic dismisses Jakupovic heroics

    zlatan-ibrahimovic_16u14vql0vkwv1440eag4rvuqh.jpg

Eldin Jakupovic's heroics in goal for Hull City left Zlatan Ibrahimovic unmoved after the Manchester United star suggested his most crucial save was facilitated by Juan Mata's "bad finish".Hull managed to leave Old Trafford with a 0-0 draw on Wednesday despite the home side spending most of the match in complete control.

Jakupovic was crucial for Hull, producing a string of saves to keep United at bay, with his stop to deny Mata from point-black range 16 minutes before the end particularly crucial.A typically outspoken Ibrahimovic saw if from a different angle, though.

"I did not see any chances where it was difficult for the goalkeeper," the Swedish striker told BBC Sport . "It was not a good save from Juan Mata, it was a bad finish. Some saves he made for the cameras."

The draw continued Marco Silva's encouraging start to life as Hull coach and, while he acknowledged that he had Jakupovic to thank to some degree, he was eager to praise his entire team as they bounced back from a dreadful 4-1 FA Cup defeat by Fulham on Sunday.

"Our goalkeeper had a good night, but I prefer to talk about all the team," he said."We had a bad afternoon against Fulham but they played very well for me and showed a good attitude. I am sure with training we will improve."We had very good chances in transition. OK, Man United had chances to score too but we deserved this point."

Guardiola: Premier League is Chelsea's to lose

    guardiola-cropped_gj557axblgto1hdv783pf3n95.jpg

Pep Guardiola insists the Premier League title is almost certainly beyond Manchester City and firmly in Chelsea's hands despite his side's magnificent 4-0 win away to West Ham.

Gabriel Jesus shone with a goal and an assist in the first half on Wednesday as the visitors cruised to an emphatic victory less than a month after they had won 5-0 at London Stadium in the FA Cup.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was in the stands to watch the game, but Guardiola claims his managerial rival has nothing to be concerned about despite seeing City move to within 10 points of them.

"He doesn't have to be too worried because Chelsea are nine points ahead [of anyone else]," Guardiola said at his post-match media conference."Only they can lose the Premier League. The gap [to Chelsea] is too big, but we will until the last day be fighting to qualify for the Champions League.

"All the teams around us are so strong but we want to be up there with them."Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva also scored for City, with Yaya Toure adding a fourth from the penalty spot in the second half as Guardiola celebrated only a second league win in five attempts. He said: "The main difference in this game was the first time we had a chance to score, we took it and the second time we had a chance to score, we took it.

"After that the game wasn't over, but it was easier. We are still far away from the perfect, perfect performance."West Ham arrived in a good moment so of course, we are very happy. We won 3-0 on Saturday [in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace] then 4-0 here away from home and we were quite solid.

"We worked well with and without the ball and our three guys up front are so, so quick. We created a lot of chances too, so I am happy."

Slaven Bilic, meanwhile, was furious his West Ham side had played into City's hands by making individual mistakes so soon after their cup defeat to Guardiola's men.

"They were very dangerous, especially when we had the ball," said Bilic."We gave the ball away in the areas where they are going to punish you. It is hard to analyse this game, so quickly we were two down and then we conceded again through a mistake.

"Not every team you play is like Man City but we need more from us. When you give players like that space and time between the lines, they just slaughter you."They beat us 5-0 in the cup and then 4-0. Make no mistake, we have to give them credit but it was also about us.

"It was very frustrating and it is like what happened in the cup. We again started well but when you make mistakes like we did it is very difficult to play against them."

'Jesus is a fighter' - Guardiola praises Brazilian after first Man City start

    jesus-cropped_13ki20zf66mkq1m5hxegbnr8km.jpg

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hailed Gabriel Jesus as a fighter after the Brazil international inspired a much-needed victory over West Ham.Guardiola's men romped to a 4-0 victory at London Stadium, with Jesus grabbing a goal and an assist on his first Premier League start.

Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Yaya Toure scored as City won for only the second time in five league matches to move level on points with fourth-placed Liverpool.

Guardiola was thrilled with his front three of Jesus, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, who tormented West Ham with Sergio Aguero controversially left on the substitutes' bench along with regular goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

"Gabriel Jesus is a fighter with instinct for the goal," Guardiola said to BBC Sport.
"He is good at assists too and I like the fans to be excited. "We played a front three with an average age of 20. Those players are the future of the club.

"Leroy Sane had some problems at the beginning but now he is settled. They will be important players for the next few years."Our high pressing was good and we were so aggressive without the ball."

Guardiola insisted he still has confidence in under-fire Bravo, despite opting to select Willy Caballero in the top-flight for the first time since August."I have a lot of confidence in both," he said."Just I decide for Willy. Another day I might decide for another player like Bravo."I am going to enjoy our victory and then from Thursday I will think about our next game."

City, who also have a 5-0 FA Cup win at West Ham to their name this year, are back in action at home to Swansea City on Sunday.
