'He is relaxed at Man Utd' - Mata shrugs off latest De Gea speculation

    hd-david-de-gea_1d2ti2aypgdem1ox5t7wgiqe4u.jpg

Juan Mata is reading little into the latest rumours linking Manchester United team-mate David de Gea with a move to Real Madrid. The Red Devils goalkeeper has seen his future at Old Trafford called into question on a regular basis since his arrival in England back in 2011.

Real have positioned themselves at the front of the transfer queue in recent years, with the La Liga giants eager to return a former Atletico Madrid favourite to the Spanish capital. They have come close to securing his signature at times, but De Gea has so far remained elusive.

Zinedine Zidane is reportedly ready to re-enter the transfer market for a proven shot-stopper this summer, with various options under consideration.

De Gea is once again said to be among those on the Santiago Bernabeu radar, but club and international colleague Mata believes the 26-year-old is happy at United and focused on the present.Mata told radio station Cadena SER: "David is a veteran here already, he has been here many years.

"Everyone recognises his contribution to the team. "More rumours have come out? If we are just in February, imagine until June, July, August... I did not know that it had come out again.

"He had a hectic summer before. "I've not spoken to him about this at all."He is relaxed here, and with too much to think about for the rest of the season, without thinking about the summer."De Gea has made 32 appearances for United in all competitions this season, keeping 11 clean sheets.

Alli named Premier League Player of the Month

    delealli-cropped_1e7o2jug24e721p63enfhu9iz3.jpg

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has been named Premier League Player of the Month for January after scoring five goals to maintain the Londoners' title push.

England international Alli beat off competition from team-mate Harry Kane as well as Everton full-back Seamus Coleman, Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson after helping Spurs to three wins and two draws last month.

Alli, whose team are second, nine points behind Chelsea, said: "The team's done very well this month, not just me individually."We've had lots of players in form so it's an honour to win it."Swansea boss Paul Clement landed the manager gong in his first month in charge at the Liberty Stadium.

After taking over on January 3, with the Swans four points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table, Clement halted a run of four straight defeats with nine points from 12 in January, including a memorable 3-2 win at Liverpool.

Swansea are now a point clear of the bottom three although it remains tight at the foot of the table."It was a nice surprise," Clement said of the award. "Also because of the other managers who had very good results and teams this month.

"I was absolutely confident in my ability to do this job, and I haven't done the job. There's a long way to go."Andy Carroll's spectacular volley for West Ham against Crystal Palace saw him net the goal of the month award.

"I'm delighted to have won the Goal of the Month competition, especially given how good some of the other goals were," Carroll told whufc.com."As soon as I hit it I knew it was in, I got a good connection and knew it would hit the back of the net. It's definitely the best goal I've ever scored, one I'm very proud of."

Leicester boss Ranieri holds crisis talks with Mahrez and Vardy

    mahrez-and-vardy-cropped_vwkvkdfg8ql21vf5cvx2iluk4.jpg

Claudio Ranieri has admitted to holding talks with Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy as Leicester City look to resolve their Premier League crisis. The champions are in danger of relegation and sit just one point above the bottom three ahead of Sunday's crunch clash away to 17th-placed Swansea City.Mahrez, last season's PFA Player of the Year, has only scored three goals and assisted two in 22 top-flight appearances this season.

Vardy, meanwhile, only has five goals in 21 outings, having netted 24 times when Leicester won the title, and under-pressure Ranieri has spoken to the star duo in a bid to get them back on track."To Riyad I said come back to last season," Ranieri said at his pre-match media conference.

"Two words – come back. He is trying, he is positive and I am very happy when he is positive. When I see him smiling, that is OK."I spoke with Riyad, I spoke with Jamie. We know [what the problem is] but I cannot tell you - of course [it is top secret].

"Yes, [the meeting] was only them. They link together. If you see how many goals they score and assists they made last year and not this season, that is it.
    "The chats are always interesting."

Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha visited the squad this week and continues to back Ranieri, who was boosted by an extra-time FA Cup fourth round replay win over Derby Country this week. The manager added: "I speak with the owner. I have a very good relationship with him. The chairman is always positive, full of energy. He is fantastic.

"We had a good match against Derby. The players who have not played consistently showed a good performance."Demarai Gray has grown up very well this season. I expect a lot from him because he is a very good player. "If he continues and improves his defensive way he could be a very good player."

Leonardo Ulloa is not yet ready to play, while Islam Slimani is short of full fitness but will be assessed ahead of kick-off.Ranieri added: "Swansea are a very good team. They move the ball quickly. For us it is very important to play with the brain and our quality."

:cool:Mata urges Manchester United team-mates to embrace pressure

    juan-mata-cropped_n6y5vwywmiym18xuwcogol46j.jpg

Juan Mata says he and his Manchester United team-mates must learn to embrace the pressure of playing for a club of such stature.

Manager Jose Mourinho seemingly questioned his players' attitude before last weekend's 3-0 win over Leicester City and told the team they need to get out of their "comfort zone".

Mata recognises that sides will always raise their game when playing against United and urged the team to cope with the high expectation levels at Old Trafford."You need to manage playing here and you need to handle it," he told Soccer Saturday.

"If you play for a club like this you need to know that there is a lot of competition for places. There is a lot of competition within the team and then with other clubs.
"When a team faces Manchester United they will always fight until the end. We have to be ready for that and when you play for United you need to know that. I think the right mentality is to try to win."

The Spain international is a World Cup and European Championship winner with his country, while across spells at Chelsea and Manchester United he has won the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

But as yet the former Valencia star is without a league title and with the Red Devils 14 points adrift of leaders Chelsea in sixth, the prospect of breaking that duck this season is bleak.Mata, though, insists the passion still burns deep to have more success in football.

"I would love to win it. I have been lucky enough to win so many trophies already. But I've been in England six seasons now and haven't won it yet," he added."I'm 28 years old now and time flies. It feels like yesterday that I was playing in my first year at Valencia when I was 19.

"There are so many good and bad things that I've been through, flying through the years, so you need to sometimes take a step aside and think about what you are doing and what you still want to achieve.

"Because for me it's very important not to relax as a professional footballer and think I've won trophies with great teams and that is success. For me it is about always getting hungrier, trying to improve and trying to be better."

Bordeaux 0-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Cavani strikes twice to send Barcelona a warning shot

    edinson-cavani-bordeaux-psg_1thgi15jzs0u0194dpgbmc0mhj.jpg

Two goals from Edinson Cavani helped Paris Saint-Germain to a commanding 3-0 Ligue 1 victory over Bordeaux that will have caught the attention of Barcelona.

Cavani struck twice either side of a clever finish from Angel Di Maria to secure the three points that put the champions level with Monaco at the top of the table on 55, albeit having played a game more.

PSG face an eagerly anticipated Champions League last-16 meeting with Barca next week and Friday's performance will give Unai Emery plenty of confidence in their chances of springing a surprise on the Spanish champions.

High-pressing Bordeaux were allowed more of the ball than a number of PSG's opponents have been this season but they were undone by some clinical counter-attacking football from the visitors.

Cavani opened the scoring after only six minutes with a spectacular volley before Di Maria combined with fit-again Marco Verratti to make it 2-0 before the break.Di Maria turned provider for Cavani's second shortly after half-time and there proved to be no way back for Bordeaux, who have now won only one of their last 12 games against PSG in the top flight.

The Argentina winger was given some rest in the second half, along with Verratti and Cavani, as Emery now turns his attention towards the visit of Luis Enrique's side to Parc des Princes.

The home crowd was in boisterous mood at kick-off but the stadium was almost silenced after six minutes thanks to Cavani's spectacular opener.

Marquinhos' long ball towards Cavani was only partly headed clear by Vukasin Jovanovic, allowing Cavani to lash a controlled volley into Cedric Carrasso's bottom-right corner from 20 yards out.

PSG sensed a chance to seize control of proceedings and continued to press the attack in the opening 20 minutes. Carrasso made a smart save to keep out Di Maria's half-volley, before a Lucas Moura free-kick caused havoc in the Bordeaux penalty area, leading to another Di Maria half-chance.

Diego Rolan shot straight at Kevin Trapp - back from injury in place of the under-fire Alphonse Areola - following Bordeaux's first good attacking move of the match, but just as the hosts looked to be gaining a foothold, PSG doubled their lead with a devastating counter-attack five minutes before half-time.

Verratti won back possession and, after exchanging passes with Lucas, he slid a sublime throughball into the path of Di Maria, who clipped a delicate finish over Carrasso and into the net.

Bordeaux heads looked to have dropped and any hope of a comeback was well and truly quashed within two minutes of the restart, as Cavani - albeit with less of a clean contact this time - steered another volley across goal and into the bottom corner from just inside the area, after he had been picked out by a terrific curling cross from Di Maria.

Rolan almost got a goal back after Presnel Kimpembe's clearance rebounded off the striker and bounced narrowly wide, but PSG were largely untroubled in the closing stages as they secured a sixth win in seven league matches to put pressure on Monaco ahead of their meeting with Metz on Saturday.

Mourinho: Man Utd expecting up to four summer signings

    1twn48o809bya11e8jx7n41b6n.jpg

Manchester United will likely do comparatively little in the transfer market this summer but could still recruit up to four new players, claims manager Jose Mourinho.

After breaking the world record for a deal by re-signing Paul Pogba before the current campaign, the Portuguese believes that his squad is in far better shape ahead of the next window.

"Everything is balanced and I think our summer [activity] will be quite small," he told reporters.Since the retirement of Alex Ferguson, United have repeatedly revamped their squad as they seek to find a rhythm under consecutive new managers.

The Red Devils' executive vice chairman, Ed Woodward, told investors on Thursday that they would look to avoid "churning through a large number of players" in 2017 and Mourinho agrees with the sentiment, though he does expect up to four players to come and go.

"He's completely right," the United boss remarked. "Of course we speak about what's next and we know that we have a squad that, like every squad, needs changes.

"But we know also that our squad has potential, our squad has good players, many of them in the best age, the age of evolution and it's not our philosophy, independent of the numbers - can you spend £1 million, £10m or £100m? - independent of the numbers, it's also the philosophy, the idea and we look at it in this way.

"We prefer to bring two, three or four players but good players, players that feel an idea, a football that we try to play, that can improve our squad. We are not interested in selling six or seven and buying six or seven and, from this six or seven, only one or two are great quality or the others are the same as the ones we are selling.

"We are not going to play this game. We are stable, so we think that our market in the summer will be soft, will be natural: some players to leave, some players to come but in a very natural way."

'He's a very important player' - Klopp speaks out on new Lallana contract

    adamlallana-cropped_hagf6pfl3cns1t9odwem1xoim.jpg

Jurgen Klopp insists there is no rush to tie Adam Lallana down to a new contract as reports gather pace that the England international is close to agreeing a fresh deal.Lallana has emerged as a key component of Klopp's XI at Anfield having initially struggled under previous manager Brendan Rodgers.

Reports this week suggested that Lallana, whose deal expires in 2019, is set to pen terms until 2021 that will make him the club's second-highest earner.Klopp was non-committal when asked how close Liverpool were to agreeing terms, but did recognise Lallana's importance to the Reds.

"Adam is a very important player for us," said Klopp."He already has a pretty long contract."How close is a new one? We don't talk about this. It says nothing about his importance if we are negotiating or not."We have to talk to the player, the agents and then, when something is decided, we will inform you."

Lallana (tight muscle) missed training ahead of Saturday's visit of Tottenham, while late checks will be made on Dejan Lovren (knee) and Ragnar Klavan (illness).

Klopp also reacted angrily after it was put to him that Loris Korius will start in goal ahead of Simon Mignolet, as questions continue to be asked of Liverpool's goalkeepers.

"Who said I've decided?" he added. "It's a rumour. I haven't decided."Whoever told you [the media] I had changed number one, please delete him from your contact list."There is nothing to say about it. It's not right that anyone could have this information."

Guardiola: No change on Aguero's Man City future

    pepguardiolasergioaguero-cropped_1myexg4tz5fpp1f11bcbr1zxu8.jpg

Pep Guardiola reiterated his stance that Sergio Aguero remains a key part of Manchester City's plans for the future despite Gabriel Jesus' dazzling emergence in the Premier League.

Brazil striker Jesus has started each of City's last two top-flight matches, with Aguero looking on from the bench at West Ham and against Swansea City - games where the 19-year-old chalked up three goals.

That included an injury-time winner in the latter match, with Aguero also on the field at the time.

Guardiola has maintained the two can play together, although regular promptings this season for Aguero to improve his all-round contribution stand in contrast to his praise for Jesus' aggressive work rate and pressing since arriving from Palmeiras last month.

Aguero told reporters after the Swansea match he would "see what the club wants to do with me" at the end of the season.

City soon made it clear they had no plans to sell the Argentina international shortly after his interview - something Guardiola was keen to underline at a news conference to preview Monday's trip to Bournemouth."Five minutes after those statements, Man City released a note saying the opinion of the club and manager about Sergio Aguero’s future," he said.

In the last three matches, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have completed a youthful and livewire forward line alongside Jesus and Guardiola has identified an upturn in his side's performances.

"We need to keep going with our rhythm, our way to play, which has been much better in the last matches," he said."I have seen a lot of improvement. When I saw the first half against Swansea that is what I want.

"Maybe we didn't create too many chances but they had 10 players behind the ball and barely crossed the halfway line."Since Tottenham at home [a 2-2 draw where Aguero played 90 minutes], West Ham and Crystal Palace I think we are more stable. We have control more."

City have put 13 goals past Bournemouth in their previous three Premier League meetings but Guardiola expects the quest for a fourth consecutive win in all competitions to be a challenging one at Vitality Stadium."Bournemouth at home are a tough team. [Harry] Arter comes at you and all the players are so aggressive," he added, with his team 10 points shy of runaway leaders Chelsea in third.

"It's outstanding what they have done in the last few years. They are an honest team."They have fast guys to use on the counter-attack. It will be a tough game."

Mourinho 'totally convinced' that Ibrahimovic will remain at Manchester United

    zlatanibrahimovic-cropped_dw9npldbrdyz1nawv3vwbp27k.jpg

Jose Mourinho is convinced Zlatan Ibrahimovic will remain at Manchester United next season for what the Portuguese believes will probably be "the last of his career at the highest level".Ibrahimovic joined United on a 12-month deal from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, with an option for a further year.

Mourinho has already stated his intention to trigger the clause and extend the former Sweden captain's stay at Old Trafford, although he warned it may be the beginning of the end for the 35-year-old striker.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's home game with Watford, Mourinho told a news conference: "I don't need his contract to be signed. I'm totally convinced he is going to stay. He came with the intention of staying two years."The first year is probably not going as he thought in his mind as he is very ambitious but in the minds of everyone it is going against every expectation.

"He knows we are going to try again to improve next season and try to share with him in a fantastic way probably the last year of his career at the highest level so I am convinced that he is staying."

Ibrahimovic has made quite an impression at United, scoring 20 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions. Mourinho added: "He has also adapted to the club, the situation. I don't see any problem with his family.

"I gave him the possibility of an extra day off to relax, or go back to Sweden, he never wants to. Everything is stable so I'm totally convinced he is going to stay."

Liverpool ban The Sun journalists from Anfield

    liverpool-fans_1qldhsqk8hz4o1ljzx3gpgpje8.jpg

Liverpool Football Club have made the decision to ban all representatives of The Sun newspaper from gaining access to Anfield and the club's Melwood training ground. The British publication has been derided on Merseyside since its false, sensationalist and hurtful 1989 coverage of the Hillsborough disaster.

Now, 28 years later, discussions between the club and representatives of the Total Eclipse of The S*n campaign group reached an accord to have tabloid paper barred from all LFC premises.

“Further to our conversations with the LFC directors,” the group tweeted, “We are happy to inform you that S*n journalists will no longer enjoy access to all club premises.”

The decision comes in the wake of last year's Hillsborough inquest findings, in which the 96 who lost their lives were ruled to have been unlawfully killed and fans cleared of all blame. Since then, Total Eclipse's campaign had gathered significant pace.

Around Merseyside, a large number of shops have been convinced to stop selling the tabloid, while 'Don't Buy The S*n' banners have been emblazoned on taxis travelling throughout the city.

Chairperson of the Hillsbrough Family Support Group, Margaret Aspinall, was understandably happy with the result but kept her comments brief, stating: “I don't want to give that scum any further publicity.”

'He told me his time is coming to an end' - Wright certain Wenger will leave Arsenal this summer

    arsene-wenger-arsenal_9aux37nbxk4u1xfz0ep0up70p.jpg

Ian Wright expects Arsene Wenger to leave Arsenal at the end of the season once his contract expires. The Frenchman has yet to renew his expiring contract as rumours that he is set to leave the club he joined 20 years ago intensify.

Wenger has presided over yet another campaign in which the Gunners have flattered to deceive in their chase for silverware.

Arsenal started the season strongly to prompt talk of them ending their 13-year Premier League title drought, but their push collapsed in the New Year.Increasing sections of the club faithful have turned on Wenger, claiming that it is time he left the club.

Reports in England have said that Arsenal have already drawn up a shortlist of potential successors for the Premier League's longest-serving manager, which includes Massimiliano Allegri of Juventus and Thomas Tuchel of Borussia Dortmund.

And Wright, who was part of the Arsenal team that won their first Premier League title in 1998 in Wenger's second season in charge, says his old boss has given him the impression that he will not renew his deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Describing his former boss as "winded, like someone whopped him in the stomach", the ex-Arsenal striker told BBC 5 Live: "I was with the boss last night and, if I'm going to be totally honest, I get the impression that I think that's it.

"I genuinely believe. I was with him for a few hours last night and we were talking. He didn't say to me 'I'm leaving at the end of the season' but ... I just get the impression in him and looking at him: 'That's it.'"I think that's it. He actually mentioned when we were talking last night that he's coming to the end. I've never heard him say that."Do I feel he will go at the end of the season? I think he will."

Should Wenger decide to leave, Wright believes a significant number of the first-team squad could be moved on and says that the players would largely be to blame for a lack of consistent silverware in the past 10 years."I just feel that now they've got to look at the players," he said. "I think that with all the teams he's built over the last eight, nine, 10 years, they've let him down badly.

"If he does leave at the end of the season, when the new manager comes in, there's going to be a lot of changes with respect to players and personnel."They should have a long hard look at themselves. He's put so much faith into these teams that I think has been misplaced."

Wenger is Arsenal's most decorated manager, leading the Londoners to three Premier League titles and six FA Cup wins to cement their position as one of England's elite.

However, their lack of a league title in over a decade has seen his star wane significantly in the eyes of fans.

Manchester United defender Jones no longer 'Mr Versatile'

    phil-jones-manchester-united_1bn3yji3m7xu51iu6nzcp4l019.jpg

Phil Jones admits there was a time when he was happy to be Manchester United’s ‘Mr Versatile’, but he is now looking to nail down a centre-half berth. The England international was snapped up by the Red Devils while still in his teens, with Sir Alex Ferguson moving early to acquire his obvious potential from Blackburn Rovers.

United’s iconic boss talked up Jones at the time, stating that he could “play anywhere” and become the club’s “best ever player”.Jones has struggled to live up to that billing, with his versatility actually working against him at times.

He has, however, impressed this season when deployed on a regular basis at the heart of Jose Mourinho’s back four, and the 24-year-old hopes he has now found a position to call his own.

Jones told the Manchester Evening News: “I always used to say it was nice to play in different positions."I was young and playing anywhere was a bonus for me then. When you are at Manchester United you play anywhere.

“But this has definitely been one of the best seasons for me in terms of playing in a set role, getting in and staying in that one position.“I am not the kind of person who can come in and play one game, be out for a couple of games then come back in and everyone expects you to be all singing and dancing with no flaws or mistakes.

“I have always been a player, and always will be the kind who needs to be playing regularly. That is how you get the best out of me. Hopefully I have proved that this season.

“I think my days as Mr Versatile are long gone now. I don't think the manager would see me as playing right back or centre midfield any more. There was a time when I had it do it and I would be more than capable of adapting, but centre-back will always be my position now.“He [Mourinho] hasn't told me that but you always get vibes and I think that is obvious now.

“I knew it had to end but it has happened gradually and I always knew it would be like that. I have not played right-back or centre midfield for a long time.”

Jones had to wait until November 6 before making his first appearance of the 2016-17 campaign, but has since gone on to grace 17 fixtures in all competitions and become a key part of United’s plans.

Tough guy David Luiz 'is the type of player I like', says Conte

    david-luiz-diego-costa-chelsea_hm2g90fyhk8l1i25t48tsuikn.jpg

Antonio Conte has been impressed with David Luiz's form this season, but is also pleased that his key defender has been willing to play despite knee pain.

The Brazil international has been struggling with a knock in his knee since being fouled by Sergio Aguero in December - a challenge that earned the Manchester City forward a four-game ban. Conte is particularly pleased to see the former Paris Saint-Germain player's team-first attitude.

“I am pleased for his performances because he is showing his real value," Conte said. "It is important for him, for Chelsea, for me. I like to repeat to my players a lot that it takes a lot of time to be something important and only one minute can disrupt all of this.

“It is important to continue in this way, with great focus in every game. Above all, when you are a central defender and you play in the middle, you must pay great attentions because you have to cover at the right moment. To understand the moment, to be aggressive and to cover the others.

"There are some who can live with pain more than others. I think it takes a different person to take the pain in this way. I love the players who show me this type of behaviour, who put the team before themselves."

Chelsea have won 17 of their last 20 games in all competitions, which has led them to a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, and they also remain in contention for the FA Cup.

Conte is preparing his side for a trip to Burnley and admits that he needs to find ways to stir his players up to avoid complacency when they play against lesser opposition.

"I like to keep the right tension in my players," he added. "Above all, when you are coming in after a good win, you can be relaxed and I try to avoid this and to work with my players to sometimes find a solution to increase tension before the game and during the training sessions.

"This is a path to improve your mentality, to improve your winning mentality. My experience as a footballer is very important, as it is important to feel the moment in the dressing room, if there is the right concentration, I feel relaxed and then I try to find a different solution [to keep focused].

"When you have this type of game against Liverpool and Arsenal. The tension is already high - in these moments you have to be good to take the pressure from the players, it is important.

"When you play this type of game it is not necessary. Sometimes it can happen during the week, when the intensity is not high and I try to increase the intensity and tension, and to warn about the danger of the game, because on Sunday we risk a lot if we lose this intensity.

"When I was a footballer it was very important to hear my coach warn me because it is important to be focused and fight. If we are relaxed we will lose."

Arsenal 2-0 Hull City: Alexis at the double in controversial win

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League as Alexis Sanchez's brace secured a 2-0 victory over Hull City in a tale of two handball incidents at Emirates Stadium.Sanchez scrappily manufactured a 34th-minute opener following a sustained spell of pressure, but diverted the ball over the line with his hand.

The close proximity of the Chile forward to a ricochet off Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic probably cleared him of any intent, but the sight of his raised right arm breaking the deadlock left Marco Silva's side understandably aggrieved.

Silva piled ignominy upon opposite number Arsene Wenger when his Olympiacos side won in north London last season and, amid the latest flurry of questions surrounding the veteran Frenchman's Arsenal future arriving on the back of last weekend's humbling loss to Chelsea, the hosts were rarely close to their fluent best.

Hull striker Oumar Niasse – one of five loanees in the visitors' starting line-up – drew fine saves from Petr Cech in either half before the Gunners wrapped up the points in stoppage time.

Sam Clucas blocked a header from Lucas Perez on the line, with a whistle from Mark Clattenburg forthcoming on this occasion. After an inevitable red card was brandished, Sanchez slammed home to calm the home faithful.

Arsenal move up to third, behind Tottenham on goal difference and nine points shy of Chelsea – a position they will retain if Manchester City fail to beat Bournemouth on Monday.

Hull twice ceded possession to Sanchez inside their own area and escaped early punishment before another errant pass, this time from Tom Huddlestone, resulted in Mesut Ozil having a shot blocked.

It was Arsenal's turn to serve up generous defending in the ninth minute as Lazar Markovic easily dispossessed Alex Iwobi and cut a ball across the face of goal - agonisingly beyond Niasse, who then forced Cech to push a header out of the top corner from Kamil Grosicki's delightful cross with the outside of his boot.

Hector Bellerin and Sanchez shot wastefully wide within a minute of one another as Wenger's men pulled Hull out of their defensive shape and Ozil showed clear frustration when he volleyed rashly off target from Sanchez's 25th-minute cross.

Theo Walcott's pursuit of his 100th Arsenal goal went on thanks to a brave block from Andrea Ranocchia, but the away side fell behind in controversial circumstances.

Huddlestone's poor clearance gave Kieran Gibbs a shooting opportunity and, after Andrew Robertson blocked the recalled full-back's shot on the line, Sanchez bundled the ball past Jakupovic, although replays showed his hand made the decisive touch.

Six minutes into the second period, Markovic made light of Laurent Koscielny's defensive efforts and surged forward – Niasse chesting down his ball into the box to draw a second fine stop from Cech.

Gibbs escaped with a yellow card for bundling Markovic over when the on-loan Liverpool man sprung away from the Arsenal backline, but Hull wasted the set-piece opportunity.

As the hour approached, Iwobi and Ozil showed deft touches before the former shot over from the left-hand side of the area.Hull continued to probe with purpose, Niasse heading into the side-netting with 10 minutes to play, and their position third from bottom is not without hope after another impressive showing under Silva.

However, the otherwise impressive Jakupovic tore recklessly from his goal late on to set in motion the chain of events that would give Arsenal and Sanchez a more handsome haul.
