Manchester City 5-3 Monaco: Citizens complete comeback in eight-goal thriller

    bernardo-silva-fernandinho-manchester-city-monaco-champions-league-21022017_1mt7b8agdk0441fcnpevppqqm3.jpg

Manchester City claimed a remarkable 5-3 victory over Monaco in an all-time Champions League classic at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

The first competitive meeting between the two sides will live long in the memory after goals inside the final 13 minutes from John Stones – atoning for an earlier error – and Leroy Sane put City in command of the last-16 tie.

Sergio Aguero and Radamel Falcao had scored two apiece – the latter also missing a penalty – while Raheem Sterling and Kylian Mbappe also got in on the act.

Leonardo Jardim's side, who have scored over 100 goals in all competitions this season, will rue the moment Falcao squandered a chance to make it 3-1 from the spot, as City hit back.

It was Sterling who opened the scoring 26 minutes in, but City quickly surrendered their advantage to Falcao's diving header following a poor clearance from Willy Caballero.

The hosts were incensed when Aguero was booked for diving instead of being awarded what City felt was a clear penalty and their frustration grew when teenager Mbappe put Monaco ahead before the break.

Having been denied a spot-kick, Pep Guardiola's side conceded one early in the second half, with Nicolas Otamendi the guilty party, but Caballero redeemed himself by denying Falcao. While one goalkeeper was restoring some pride, another was about to have his dented as Danijel Subasic allowed Aguero's tame near-post strike to creep past him just before the hour mark.

But a remarkable game took another twist just three minutes later, Stones failing to defend a long ball and Falcao producing a stunning chipped finish.

Still the drama continued to unfold and, in a scarcely believable script, Aguero levelled before Stones went from villain to hero and Sane capped it all off.

The return leg in three weeks' time has a lot to live up to, but Monaco will have little choice but to go on the attack once more.Kamil Glik, whose early booking ensured he will miss the second leg, headed narrowly wide amid a high-tempo start that set the tone for an enthralling contest.

Monaco hearts were in mouths when Kevin De Bruyne's teasing cross flashed across the face of the goal, with Aguero failing to apply the finishing touch. And the deadlock was broken soon after, David Silva feeding Sane, who delivered the simple square pass from which Sterling tapped home.

The lead lasted only six minutes, though, with Caballero punished when he failed to clear his lines and Fabinho's superb cross was met by Falcao's header.

Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz had a big call to make after Aguero took a tumble when trying to round Subasic and the Spanish official opted to pull out a yellow card for the Argentina international.Monaco rubbed salt in the wound five minutes before half-time as Mbappe sprinted in behind astatic defence and lifted Fabinho's throughball past Caballero.

Things looked to have taken a turn for the worse for City soon after the restart when Otamendi fouled Falcao in the box, but the former Manchester United loanee's effort was poor and Caballero easily kept it out.

Aguero's 58th-minute leveller was a moment to forget for Subasic, but Stones was next to embarrass himself with an error that allowed Falcao time to fashion a beautiful dinked finish.Another City penalty appeal was waved away when Sterling went to ground under pressure from Benjamin Mendy, drawing deafening boos from the home crowd.

Those jeers turned to cheers after Aguero expertly volleyed in Silva's corner with 19 minutes remaining and Stones prodded in at the back post from a corner to put City ahead.

The final say on a crazy evening went to Sane, who turned in Aguero's selfless assist and the full-time whistle afforded an enraptured crowd to finally exhale.

‘Nothing is finished’ - Falcao warns Manchester City

    radamel-falcao-monaco_bfy9g1pf59c81edwgmzokjbez.jpg

Radamel Falcao has warned Manchester City that Monaco still have a chance of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, despite suffering a 5-3 defeat in England.

The Colombian scored a double for the Ligue 1 leaders at the Etihad Stadium, making up for a missed second-half penalty with a glorious chip to put his side 3-2 up. However, they crumbled defensively late on and have left themselves a mountain to climb at Stade Louis II in three weeks.

Given the nature of Tuesday’s fixture, however, the 31-year-old attacker believes his side are still in with a chance.

“Nothing is finished,” he told beIN Sports. “Unfortunately we could not get the victory tonight. Now we must prepare for the second leg at home.”

Monaco have been in freescoring form this season and have netted 111 times already in all competitions. With three away goals under their belts, any kind of low-scoring two-strike success would be enough to see them eliminate Pep Guardiola’s charges.

Manchester City & Monaco set Champions League record

    sergio-aguero-manchester-city_1ne4vqoxq3y0r10m3k9y7gp874.jpg

Manchester City and Monaco took part in a Champions League match for the ages on Tuesday, and they made some history in the process.

City came back to defeat the Ligue 1 side 5-3 in their round-of-16 first leg at the Etihad Stadium, as Sergio Aguero scored a pair in the second half.

With eight strikes combined, the teams set a record for the most total goals in a Champions League knockout round first leg.

The teams will be back at it in an encore performance on March 15 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.

Manchester City were 'lucky' against Monaco - Guardiola

    pep-guardiola-manchester-city_lzud8yc6e867163h5fgkwr5p6.jpg

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola conceded that his side were "lucky" at times during their 5-3 win over Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The French side were up 2-1 in the second half of the round-of-16 first leg, and looked set to take a commanding advantage when Radamel Falcao stepped up to the penalty spot in the 50th minute. But the Colombian's spot-kick was poor and easily saved by Willy Caballero.

City took advantage of another piece of fortune eight minutes later when Sergio Aguero's tame effort was fumbled into the net by Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic to make it 2-2.

"A lot of things happened but in the moment we were lucky," Guardiola told BT Sport after the match. "We were stable mentally. The old and young guys in the team played amazing. To live this experience helps us a lot in the future."Monaco has more history than us in the competition and you need this kind of experience to learn and improve.

The Spaniard's side looked defensively fragile in the match, but eventually managed to blow away their high-scoring opposition with four second-half goals. "We think in attack. Attack, attack, attack," Guardiola said. "Monaco score maybe 80 goals in one season and attack with a lot of people.

"They are physically strong and are a top, top team. That's why they're top of the league. That's why we take a lot of credit with this result.

"The result is OK. It could be better, could be worse, but it is what it is."Even with a two-goal advantage, Guardiola knows he can take nothing for granted in the second leg on March 15."Of course anything can happen in Monaco and we have to score goals," the City boss said.

:love:Saint-Etienne 0-1 Manchester United (agg: 0-4): Mkhitaryan on target as Bailly sees red

    henrikh-mkhitaryan-saint-etienne-manchester-united_14rjs78mrd6as1fkj42y5l0kd9.jpg

Manchester United cruised into the last 16 of the Europa League as a 1-0 victory at Saint-Etienne crowned a dominant 4-0 aggregate triumph, but match-winner Henrikh Mkhitaryan left boss Jose Mourinho with an injury worry.

The sight of the Armenia captain - who continued his recent fine form with a smartly taken goal from Juan Mata's cross - departing before the half hour with an apparent hamstring problem was far from welcome with Sunday's EFL Cup final against Southampton on the horizon.

Mourinho's scope for tactical substitutions with an eye on that Wembley date was further limited when centre-back Eric Bailly was booked for two fouls on Romain Hamouma in the space of three needlessly rash minutes in the second-half.

It means the Ivory Coast international will be suspended when United begin their last-16 tie and his manager will have been pleased to see the remaining action at a buoyant Stade Geoffroy-Guichard pass without incident.

In contrast to the raucous din made by the home support, United played with an easy control that meant there was little to report until they opened the scoring in the 16th minute.Mata shuffled into space on the left to curl in a sumptuous centre, leaving Mkhitaryan to apply a pleasingly deft finish.

The former Borussia Dortmund star's joy was short-lived however, as he made way for Marcus Rashford and headed straight down the tunnel within 10 minutes of his sixth goal this season.

Rashford and Mata saw a low cross from Ashley Young flash agonisingly beyond them as Saint-Etienne appeared ripe to be cut open whenever it suited Mourinho's men to do so.

An ungainly challenge from United goalkeeper Sergio Romero to thwart Kevin Monnet-Paquet gave the hosts a little encouragement before the interval, with pride their only remaining concern.

Daley Blind cut infield for United in the 58th minute, slipping a pass through for Marouane Fellaini to slam into the side-netting – an unmarked Zlatan Ibrahimovic inside was unimpressed.

Paul Pogba then drove into the arms of Saint-Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier and Mourinho's star names remained in play as the hour passed, in spite of Mkhitaryan's cautionary tale. The likes of Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba had to remain for the duration after Bailly's indiscipline forced Mourinho to introduce Marcos Rojo in place of Mata.

Florentin Pogba stoked the dying embers of this battle for sibling supremacy when the Saint-Etienne left-back thudded an optimistic long-range shot wide, while his younger brother saw the ball run away from him when Rashford's 75th-minute effort trickled across the six-yard box.

Family bragging rights had not been in doubt for some time by that stage.

Valencia 2-1 Real Madrid: Ronaldo goal not enough for Zidane's men

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-22022017_a52yu1dx2pl14y5ewhvwonfq.jpg

Valencia handed a major boost to Barcelona and Sevilla in LaLiga's title race as they beat Real Madrid 2-1 at Mestalla.

Two goals in the first nine minutes allowed Voro's side to record only their second victory over Madrid in 15 league meetings and bring the leaders' six-game unbeaten run in all competitions to an end.

Simone Zaza's spectacular turn and half-volley after four minutes had the home fans on their feet, and they were sent into raptures when Fabian Orellana scored his fifth goal of the season following a clinical counter-attack soon afterwards.Madrid began to regain some composure and Cristiano Ronaldo headed home just before the end of a breathless first half of football to give his side some hope.

Ronaldo saw a penalty appeal turned down as Madrid built some sustained pressure after half-time, but despite the visitors enjoying nearly 72 per cent of the possession, Diego Alves went largely unworried in the Valencia goal.

A surprisingly toothless attack was unable to fashion a late equaliser, meaning Madrid remain just a point above second-place Barca in the table, though they still have a game in hand. Valencia climb to 14th.

Zaza, who also scored in Sunday's 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, put Valencia ahead with only four minutes played, collecting Munir El Haddadi's cross with his back to goal before blasting an unstoppable shot on the turn into the top corner, with the recalled Keylor Navas only able to stand and watch.
Five minutes later, a shell-shocked Madrid found themselves two behind. Raphael Varane was dispossessed in the Valencia half and the home side raced through on the break, with Nani sending Orellana into the box to slot through the legs of Navas.
Munir saw an effort deflect over the crossbar, before James Rodriguez - who had kept his place in the starting line-up - almost squeezed Ronaldo's low cross over the line at the far post in a breathless opening 20 minutes.
Diego Alves reacted brilliantly to keep Karim Benzema's dipping effort from creeping beneath the crossbar but he could do nothing to stop Ronaldo halving the deficit before the break as Madrid made their mounting pressure count.

Marcelo was given time down the left to float a superb cross towards the penalty spot, where Ronaldo rose highest to power a header beyond Alves' right hand.

Madrid's pressure was relentless after half-time and Ronaldo had a penalty shout waved away after going to ground over an outstretched leg from Eliaquim Mangala, before Zidane turned to Gareth Bale to add some extra dynamism to his attack.

Zaza was aggrieved not to win a spot-kick of his own, having been barged aside by Dani Carvajal following an appalling piece of control from Varane, but Madrid's frustrations were nonetheless growing as Valencia broke up play by winning a number of cheap free-kicks.

Zidane urged his players forward, but - despite several goalmouth scrambles in the closing stages - Madrid could not fashion any meaningful late chances to salvage a draw, meaning Barca - and under-fire Luis Enrique - can allow themselves a little more hope in the defence of their title.

:(Mourinho: Mkhitaryan and Carrick may miss EFL Cup final

    henrikh-mkhitaryan-saint-etienne-manchester-united_14rjs78mrd6as1fkj42y5l0kd9.jpg

Jose Mourinho suspects Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick will miss Manchester United's EFL Cup final against Southampton after they were taken off in Wednesday's Europa League win over Saint-Etienne.

Mkhitaryan made the difference in the second leg in France, diverting a Juan Mata ball into the net 15 minutes in. But his night was cut short soon after when he pulled up with an apparent hamstring problem, leading to him being replaced by Marcus Rashford.Carrick was then substituted shortly after the hour mark, with Bastian Schweinsteiger filling in.The injuries are a big concern for Mourinho, whose side are still competing in four competitions.

“Honestly I don’t think he is fit. I think him and Michael they are both out. This is based on my experience, not based on my medical knowledge."A calf, a hamstring, even if it is minor, minor, some fibres damaged, I think they are out."

Mourinho put the muscle strains down to his side's demanding fixture list, instead of questioning the pitch at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard."The pitch was okay. I think they did their best, it was playable and it was not dangerous.

"The injuries were a consequence of playing a lot of matches. The stadium was good, the stadium was beautiful, the pitch was good, the crowd was fantastic.
"It was a pleasure to play here.”

United's schedule will become more intense as they will have to play Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final on the Monday before they play their second leg of the next round.

Asked if the lack of recovery time could be a cause for concern, the Portuguese coach said: “Of course, and I feel really surprised that the decision is made before our draw for the next round in Europe, because at the moment who knows who we will play against? Nobody knows where the first match will be and where the second match will be.

"Imagine we play Chelsea on the Monday and then we have to go to a second leg in the Europa League in Russia, in Turkey, in Greece. So I think once more their interests go in front of the clubs and the English football interests. Nobody cares about it.

“This is what we have. I cannot play against Chelsea with a second team. I cannot play against Chelsea with under-21s like Manchester City did last year I think. We are Manchester United, I cannot do that. I cannot do that as Manchester United manager, I cannot do that to the FA Cup because the FA Cup is not guilty of these decisions. The FA Cup is beautiful, the competition is historical.“I have to treat Manchester United supporters and the FA Cup in the right way. I cannot go there with the under-21s. Probably they deserve it but I don’t do that.

“So what is going to happen is an accumulation of matches, people playing a lot of matches. I have to make some rotation, but some of the boys will have to play in all of these consecutive matches and if situations like the Mkhitaryan one or the Carrick one happen, they happen.”

Porto 0-2 Juventus: Substitutes Pjaca and Alves give Bianconeri command

    marko-pjaca-porto-juventus-champions-league_4da6ivwez251gpumva5a0s8d.jpg

Marko Pjaca scored his first goal for Juventus and fellow substitute Dani Alves was also on target as they won 2-0 at Porto to take control of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Faced with the prospect of playing more than an hour with 10 men after Alex Telles was sent off for two yellow cards in as many minutes, Porto coped well as Juve saw a host of chances go begging.

The game appeared set to end a highly frustrating draw for Juve, but Massimiliano Allegri - who dropped centre-back Leonardo Bonucci in the wake of their spat at the end of Friday's win over Palermo - made a pair of inspired changes in bringing on Pjaca and Alves.Pjaca finally broke the deadlock in 72nd minute, powering a half-volley into the bottom-left corner to end his wait for a maiden Bianconeri goal.

And just two minutes later Alves put Juve in complete command by converting from Alex Sandro's left-wing delivery to the far post. The hosts never looked like mounting any sort of response and they now have a mountain to climb in the return fixture on March 14.

Porto started brightly and saw Yacine Brahimi go close when he curled a free-kick narrowly over after Giorgio Chiellini was dubiously adjudged to have fouled Andre Silva.

Juve soon began to dictate play without creating much in front of goal, Paulo Dybala spurning their best chance as he fired over on the stretch from Gonzalo Higuain's flick-on.And the visitors were handed a huge boost as Telles lost all composure and committed two rash fouls in the space of as many minutes.

After raking his studs down the back of Juan Cuadrado's leg, the left-back needlessly slid into Stephan Lichtsteiner on the right flank, leaving referee Felix Brych with no choice but to issue a second yellow.Cuadrado then immediately drove wide of the left-hand post before Miralem Pjanic forced Iker Casillas into action with a long-range effort.

Sami Khedira could only manage to turn Alex Sandro's left-wing cross wide, with Casillas then required to pull off a fine reaction save after Higuain's close-range effort deflected off Felipe.

The Juve onslaught continued and only the left-hand post prevented Dybala from breaking the deadlock with a fierce effort that had Casillas easily beaten.Dybala did beat Casillas shortly after the restart when he lashed in at the near post from a clever Pjanic pass, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Juve were almost punished for their profligacy by Hector Herrera, who perhaps should have done better as he nodded wide from substitute Miguel Layun's excellent cross from the left.

A dipping volley from Khedira was only just off target and Higuain saw a sublime curling effort drift agonisingly wide as Juve's frustration grew. But Allegri was able to breathe a sigh of relief when Pjaca lashed in after Layun inadvertently deflected Dybala's pass into his path.

Moments later Alves made an instant impact as he stretched to turn in the ball from the excellent Alex Sandro and, although Khedira missed a late chance to make it 3-0, Juve will head back to Turin extremely confident of progression to the quarter-finals.

Sevilla 2-1 Leicester City: Foxes stay in the tie with crucial away goal

    joaquin-correa-kasper-schmeichel-sevilla-leicester-champions-league_ih0x8j1xhubm1tvkmpctk6n4u.jpg

There was no awakening from Leicester City's nightmare season as they went down 2-1 at Sevilla in their Champions League last-16 first-leg meeting, but Jamie Vardy's away goal stirred old senses again for the Foxes.

This continental trip offered the Foxes distraction from domestic dismay that lurched from slipping into a Premier League relegation fight to FA Cup elimination at the hands of Millwall on Saturday.

Given their woeful form, a trip to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan was the last thing Claudio Ranieri needed and Sevilla - without the suspended Jorge Sampaoli on the touchline - routinely found gaps in a porous and passive defence.

Kasper Schmeichel was the only visiting player to provide resistance, saving Joaquin Correa's early penalty and numerous other efforts, but Pablo Sarabia's firm header had Sevilla ahead at half-time and Correa atoned for his miss with a goal after the break.

Schmeichel's saves largely looked to be in vain, but a Sevilla lapse opened up space for Danny Drinkwater to tee up Vardy's first Champions League goal and send a Leicester following that has become increasingly browbeaten to dream again.

The Foxes won all three of their group games at the King Power Stadium, twice by the 1-0 scoreline that would take them through in three weeks' time.

Ranieri had spoken of this fixture having a transformative effect on Leicester's campaign, but it was more of the same from the off, Christian Fuchs almost nodding past Schmeichel, who reacted sharply for the first of many times to save the Austrian.

The air of calamity would not clear, though, as Correa weaved past a static Robert Huth before he was felled by a clumsy, lunging Wes Morgan in the penalty area.Though Schmeichel saved his captain's blushes by holding Correa's weak effort, the Sevilla tide was unrelenting.

Sergio Escudero was a persistent menace on Sevilla's left, and he forced Schmeichel into a smart stop before setting up a magnificent opener. The full-back beat Ahmed Musa to the ball before coming back into possession and whipping an inch-perfect cross over Fuchs for Sarabia to race onto and plant a firm header beyond the helpless Schmeichel.

The increasingly desperate Dane had to fist a looping, deflected Stevan Jovetic shot over and tip away a fizzing Correa shot as Leicester's lifeless approach of sitting deep in their own half did nothing to stem Sevilla's roaming through the pitch.

Wilfred Ndidi blasted the visitors' first shot on target straight at Sergio Rico, but it did not immediately signal the coming fightback as Vitolo hit the post from an impossible angle before the dithering Morgan and Huth converged on Jovetic, allowing Correa the time and space to finish after the Montenegrin offloaded the ball.

Sevilla were in control, but they were guilty of allowing Leicester a scent of progression when Drinkwater wandered into open space before picking out Vardy for his first strike since a hat-trick against Manchester City in December.

Victory remained Sevilla's, while Real Madrid's defeat at Valencia also vitalised a potential title tilt in LaLiga, and Sampaoli's return to the touchline for the second leg could prove crucial in the Spanish side making the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time.

:cool:City & United in talks over Manchester derby to be held in the USA

    hd-jose-mourinho-pep-guardiola_2kerynzz9o971annss32gp5nz.jpg

Manchester City and Manchester United are in talks over a high-profile pre-season friendly in the United States this summer, Goal has learned.

The Premier League heavyweights were due to contest the first overseas Manchester derby in Beijing last summer, only for bad weather to render the pitch at the Bird's Nest Stadium unplayable.

But there is a likelihood that the two sides will meet in the International Champions Cup ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, with senior officials ironing out the details in recent weeks.

An agreement is yet to be reached but it is understood there is a willingness on both sides to find time in their respective schedules.City are set to visit the American Midwest this summer, while United travel the west coast.

Last summer, either side of the planned derby in Beijing, United played Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai while City took on the Bundesliga side in Shenzhen. And this time around it is believed the Manchester rivals will visit different cities when not in competition with each other.
