:(Mkhitaryan keeping fingers crossed over injury

    henrikhmkhitaryan-cropped_smztlf10rck21uq2jucjhrhxr.jpg

Henrikh Mkhitaryan expressed mixed emotions after he scored the winner but picked up an injury in Manchester United's 1-0 Europa League victory over Saint-Etienne.

After scoring United's fourth goal of the tie in the 16th minute of the second leg at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Mkhitaryan was replaced by Marcus Rashford just nine minutes later due to an apparent hamstring injury.

The Armenian forward tweeted after the game to say how happy he was to have scored on his return to France, where he grew up when his father was a striker for the now defunct ASOA Valence.

The 28-year-old acknowledged his concerns over missing out on United's day out at Wembley, when they face Southampton in the EFL Cup final, by including the words "fingers crossed" in his tweet.

United manager Jose Mourinho also has a doubt over the fitness of Michael Carrick for Sunday's final, the midfielder went off shortly after the hour due to a calf complaint. The Portuguese said he thinks both players will miss the game against the Saints.

Massive away goal means anything can happen for Leicester - Schmeichel

    kasper-schmeichel_1pae8wy3t45yb1e2cmxad4s7ys.jpg

Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel believes Jamie Vardy's "massive" away goal made Wednesday's 2-1 Champions League defeat to Sevilla a good result ahead of the home leg.

The Premier League champions travelled to Andalusia in wretched form and looked to be on their way to a significant defeat as Sevilla dominated the first half and opened up a two-goal lead in the 62nd minute – Joaquin Correa atoning for a penalty that Schmeichel saved by adding to Pablo Sarabia's opener. But Vardy pulled one back 17 minutes from time to give Leicester a lifeline in the last-16 tie and Schmeichel believes that goal gives them a real chance at the King Power Stadium on March 14.

"The away goal's massive," the Dane told BT Sport. "That was a something that we hoped we could get because going to the King Power anything can happen.

"It's a joy to play in these games, every player was looking forward to it, everyone ran their socks off and worked hard."We were up against a very good side, but going in, we were all about us, how much we were hurting from this season.

"We wanted to put in a good performance. We lost the game and we're disappointed but they are very, very good and 2-1 away from home in the Champions League is a good result.

"We've lost the game. We're disappointed; we're not celebrating, definitely not celebrating. But 2-1 away from home in Champions League - we'll take that."

Rooney named China's fifth most popular player amid CSL links

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united-2016_xd1bwhx2qema1bgqifk3a3nde.jpg

Wayne Rooney has been named as China's fifth most popular footballer, while his Manchester United side have jumped above Bayern Munich to finish top of the club rankings.

United captain Rooney is being heavily linked with a move to the Chinese Super League, with his agent Paul Stretford reportedly in the country – where the transfer window is open until the end of February - to negotiate a move.

The sixth edition of the Red Card report, which analyses the influence of European clubs and players in China based on Weibo and the nation's other prominent social media platforms, has the England international in fifth spot, even before a potentially lucrative transfer.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo came first, with Arsenal's Mesut Ozil second. Gareth Bale lies third and Rooney's team-mate Anthony Martial pipped him to fourth position.

"China is an exciting opportunity for me," Martial said. "The passion from the Chinese fans is amazing and it is a great chance for me to give something back.Football is growing fast out there and I want to be more involved."Barcelona's Lionel Messi did not make the top five due to his limited social media presence in China.

On the club list – which assessed European teams online across eight different performance indicators, including social media followers and audience figures from live streams - United finished ahead of Bayern.

Three other Premier League clubs – Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City – rounded off the top five. Real Madrid, AC Milan and Tottenham were next, with Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona tying for ninth.

"Our summer tour in China set new standards in the integration of fan and commercial activities with a football pre-season programme," explained United commercial director Jamie Reigle.

"We embedded our Chinese media partners into the tour party, launched our home kit in Shanghai and supported multiple product launches for our sponsors; all firsts for the club and all amplified by China's digital platforms."

The Bundesliga was comfortably the most influential league in China, with the Premier League second, La Liga third and Ligue 1 in fourth spot.Barca & Messi might be heading for divorce "The Premier League is complacent," David Hornby, head of sport at report authors Mailman, said to BBC Sport .

"Its clubs have decent numbers of followers on Weibo, but not as high engagement. The Bundesliga clubs are far more active. The German league tells its clubs what to do, whereas the respective Premier League clubs are in control of what they do.

"United were the most followed, but Bayern were a country mile ahead regarding activity online. But United have taken big strides with fan events and a tour last year."

Manchester United selling Rooney now would be odd - Neville

    waynerooney-cropped_1onta7d22fod91nx95303gla2z.jpg

Gary Neville believes Wayne Rooney is likely to stay at Manchester United until at least the end of the season because the Red Devils' squad would be left short if he left.

United's record goalscorer and captain has had to settle for a bit-part role under manager Jose Mourinho this season and speculation has mounted that he could make a switch to the lucrative Chinese Super League.

Rooney's agent is reportedly in China to discuss the possibility of a move before the CSL's transfer window closes, but it is thought a deal is still some way from being concluded.

And former United skipper Neville says it would be foolish to allow the forward to leave at this time given that Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin were sold last month."I would like to think Rooney would stay at Manchester United," Neville, a former team-mate of Rooney's at Old Trafford, told Sky Sports.

"It is strange timing - the [English] transfer window is over and yet there is this debate when there is still two months of the season to go. That seems odd. There is still a contribution to be made and many trophies to be played for and won at United.

"I am waiting to see what happens but the timing seems odd when United need their squad. Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay left in January, which means the squad - if they got two or three injuries - would be depleted.

"The fact they are still in the Europa League, playing very important games in the league and the FA Cup, plus obviously a cup final, I would imagine Jose would want his squad in place.

"I can also see the other side of it that if Wayne's unhappy and does not want to sit on the bench, maybe there would be a move. End of the season, I could maybe see something but why now? I am not sure."

Griezmann will 'definitely' join Manchester United, claims Petit

    antoinegriezmann-cropped_1mpdmmizxbxcr19vptk4rimmo9.jpg

Antoine Griezmann will "definitely" join Manchester United at the end of the season, according to former France international Emmanuel Petit.

The Atletico Madrid and France forward has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, with United manager Jose Mourinho insisting he wants quality over quantity in the transfer market.

Goal understands that United are confident of securing a deal even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this summer, with a deal likely to cost around €80 million.

And Petit, who played in the Premier League for Arsenal and Chelsea, believes Griezmann's bond with Les Bleus team-mate Paul Pogba will help the Premier League side to persuade the 25-year-old to join."I think he will come to Manchester United - definitely," Petit said to Sky Sports.

"He has a great partnership with Pogba in the national team, they are very good friends as well.

"He will bring goals, assists and his winning mentality."Petit believes Griezmann - who only finished behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the 2016 Ballon d'Or - would represent a huge steal for United if the deal goes ahead.

He continued: "Griezmann, over the last four years, has improved step by step.
"Every single year he has improved his level all the time so he has got big ambition personally but as well with the team he is playing for.

"For me it would be a big bargain for Manchester United."Griezmann was a runner-up in the Champions League and Euro 2016 last season and has only won the Supercopa de Espana during his time at Atleti.

Payet always had Marseille in his heart, says Barcelona defender Digne

One of Marseille's favourite sons returned home last month and French left-back Lucas Digne says the Stade Velodrome was always in Dimitri Payet's heart.

Having left for Premier League side West Ham in 2015, France international playmaker Payet returned to Marseille in a £25million deal before the transfer window shut in January.

While angering West Ham and their fans, Payet was lauded on France's south coast for his determination to make it back to the Ligue 1 club, where he spent two seasons before moving to London.

And Payet's second coming, as well as Patrice Evra's arrival from Italian champions Juventus, came as no surprise to Barcelona defender and France team-mate Digne following Euro 2016 on home soil.Speaking to Omnisport as Marseille prepare to host Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, ex-PSG star Digne said: "Dimitri always had Marseille in his heart.

"During the Euros, Pat [Evra] talked about the atmosphere in the Velodrome which he loved."So I think they are two very good choices for Marseille and for them as well."

Head coach Rudi Garcia played a key role in luring Payet back to the Velodrome.
Part of American tycoon Frank McCourt's new project under president Jacques-Henri Eyraud, former Roma boss Garcia returned to coaching in place of Michel in October, following Franck Passi's interim tenure.

Garcia worked with Payet during the pair's time together at fellow French outfit Lille, where the latter spent two seasons before making the switch to Marseille in 2013.

Digne is no stranger to Garcia either, after spending the 2015-16 campaign on loan at Roma, having previously played for Lille, and the 23-year-old is a big fan of his countryman's work."I think it's very good news for Marseille. He's a great coach," Digne added. "He'll bring all his experience with his staff and they'll do a very good job in my opinion."

Marseille welcome reigning French champions PSG to the Velodrome on the weekend.

Garcia's side improved following his arrival but they have lost four of their past seven league fixtures - without consecutive wins since late December - to sit sixth in the standings, four points adrift of the final European qualification place and 17 behind second-placed PSG after 26 games.

Digne - a two-time Ligue 1 winner with the club from the French capital prior to his transfer to Spanish giants Barca - is excited about Sunday's fixture.

"I don't know about [the club's title chances] this year because [Marseille] is quite far [away] in the rankings," he continued. "But it's always a special game between the two teams."

Coutinho beats Neymar to best Brazilian player in Europe award

    hd-philippe-coutinho-liverpool_10kh5kfwy9p2i133puoe2t0ugh.jpg

Philippe Coutinho has been named the winner of this year's Samba Gold prize given to the best Brazilian player in Europe. The Liverpool star prevented Neymar from claiming the prize for the third straight year by topping a poll of fans, journalists and current and ex-players.

Coutinho earned 32.13% of the overall vote, with Barcelona forward Neymar placing second on 27.88% and Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro rounding out the podium on 13.35%.Casemiro's Madrid team-mate Marcelo (6.81%) and Coutinho's forward partner Roberto Firmino (6.25%) complete the top five.

"It means a lot," Coutinho told Liverpool's official website. "I'm very happy to know that this past year I have been recognised by many people. It was an important year for me and I'm very happy to win this award."

Neymar won both the journalists' and players' vote but Coutinho proved more popular with fans, taking 45.60% of the votes cast online compared to 19.44% for the Barca man.

It is the first time Coutinho has won the award since its inception in 2008 and prevents Neymar from drawing level with Thiago Silva for the most all-time wins, with the Paris Saint-Germain defender receiving the accolade three times.Kaka, Luis Fabiano and Maicon won in the award's first three years of existence before Silva was named the top player three years in a row.

After helping Liverpool to the League Cup and Europa League finals last season, Coutinho has been in outstanding form for the Reds during the 2016-17 campaign thus far."It was a good year," he added. "As a team, we played very well and we managed to get to two finals.

"Unfortunately, we did not win the finals, we lost. That was a very difficult time for us to deal with the defeat [to Sevilla] but this certainly made the group stronger.

"We started the season very well, at a high level. We all played very well, so, of course, 2016 was a good year. In the end I got injured, I missed a few games at the end of the year, but it was a positive year."

Rooney confirms he is staying at Manchester United despite China interest

    wayne-rooney-premier-league-stoke-v-man-utd-210117_k3c9q2imh8aj11mocgfs0oj75.jpg

Wayne Rooney has confirmed he is staying at Manchester United despite reported interest from the Chinese Super League.

Reports this week have claimed Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford, travelled to China to negotiate with Chinese clubs potentially ready to offer the England captain a lucrative exit from the Premier League.

The Chinese transfer window remains open until the end of February, meaning a deal could have been struck with immediate effect.

But United's all-time top goalscorer has now revealed that he wants to remain at Old Trafford as the Red Devils continue their participation in the league, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

In a statement released to the Press Association, Rooney said: "Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Manchester United.

"I hope I'll play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts. It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it."

On Wednesday, Tianjin Quanjian coach Fabio Cannavaro admitted his club had approached Rooney but ruled out a move on the grounds that he did not fit his preferred style of play.

Beijing Guoan have been linked with the 31-year-old on the basis that they remain under the quota of foreign players allowed in the Chinese league, though Jiangsu Suning had also been tipped as a possible destination despite currently being at the limit.Rooney has scored two goals in 17 league matches this season, eight of which have been starts.

He began the campaign as a member of Jose Mourinho's starting XI but has since fallen out of the lineup, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic now the club's first-choice striker and Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan bolstering the midfield.

Falcao has silenced his critics after failed Man Utd and Chelsea spells, says Jardim

    radamelfalcao-cropped_1iudoj8c3b2dp1pgymg7w87odi.jpg

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim feels Radamel Falcao has silenced his critics with his fine performances this campaign. The 31-year-old returned to Monaco ahead of this season following unconvincing loan spells with Manchester United and Chelsea. There were question marks over whether he would be able to rediscover his old form, but he has impressed with a string of fine performances, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.

He netted a double - his second coming courtesy of a stunning chip - in the 5-3 Champions League last-16 first-leg loss to Manchester City on Tuesday, though he also missed a penalty at the Etihad Stadium."Falcao is very important for us," Jardim said at a news conference.

"We have done a lot of work with him to get him ready to compete again and things are going very well. I am very happy that he has rediscovered his level of before. A lot of people were sceptical about his chances of getting back to his best. He deserves all the praise he has been getting."His second goal against Manchester City was the goal of the season.

"Falcao will continue to take penalties. I am someone who knows how things work in life. There are times when things go well and sometimes there are complicated moments. We cannot criticise a player who gives you so much in return."

Jardim also had his say on Kylian Mbappe following the youngster's rise to prominence and he had nothing but praise for the gifted attacker.

"Kylian has been here for a year and a half and we believe in him," Jardim added.
"He is a young guy who is still progressing. He has made another step up compared to last year. He is a quick learner, who listens more, takes care of himself and is very professional."He possesses a great dynamic going forward and also works hard defensively."

Tottenham 2-2 Gent (Agg 2-3): 10-man Spurs stumble out of Europa League

    tottenham-gent-harry-kane_1i9m3luq7wxi132t578f7skqy.jpg

Dele Alli was sent off as Tottenham crashed out of the Europa League with a 2-2 draw against Gent in the second leg of their last-32 tie on Thursday.

The England international was given his marching orders for a shocking tackle on Brecht Dejaegere towards the end of the first half, and although Spurs battled boldly in his absence, they were unable to secure what would have been only a second win in seven matches at Wembley.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Mauricio Pochettino's side made an ideal start when Christian Eriksen opened the scoring with just 10 minutes played, but a Harry Kane own goal put Gent back in front on aggregate.

Alli's dismissal left Spurs with a mountain to climb but they remained the dominant force after the break, and Victor Wanyama restored their advantage on the night with a blistering strike on the hour mark.

Moses Simon spurned the chance to make Gent's progress all-but safe with 17 minutes to play, but Hein Vanhaezebrouck's side - who are eighth in Belgium's top flight - at last booked their place in Friday's last-16 draw thanks to Jeremy Perbet's finish from a counter-attack.

Spurs now turn their attention to Sunday's Premier League match with Stoke City, as they look to secure a return to Champions League football for next season.

Pochettino had challenged his players to prove they are ready to perform on the big occasions, and it did not take long for them to level the aggregate scores.

Eric Dier's hopeful punt forwards caused havoc in the Gent defence and Eriksen pounced to slide the ball beneath Lovre Kalinic and into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

Spurs were firmly in the ascendancy but Wembley was stunned 10 minutes later when Gent snatched a valuable away goal in unlikely circumstances, with Kane heading into his own net as he tried to clear following a corner.

The home side's task became that much harder when Alli, frustrated at not winning a free-kick, jumped into an appalling scissor-challenge on Dejaegere to earn a straight red card six minutes before the break.

Undaunted by their numerical disadvantage, Spurs piled pressure on the Gent goal after the break, with Eriksen denied a second only thanks to a timely dash from his line from Kalinic to intercept Kane's clever throughball.

Kane wasted a glorious chance to give Spurs a lifeline, blasting wide of the right-hand post after Eriksen had sent him through on goal, as the home fans around Wembley began to grow frustrated.

Hope was rekindled after 61 minutes, however, as Wanyama fired an unstoppable strike into the top-left corner from the edge of the area after Eriksen flicked the ball into his path.

Kyle Walker came close to a third but Simon missed a clear chance to give Gent a second away goal, heading into the side-netting when picked out unmarked at the far post by Kenny Saief.

Spurs piled on the pressure in the closing stages but Gent made their passage safe in the 82nd minute with their first shot on target, with substitute Perbet reacting quickest to Kalifa Coulibaly's deflected centre to prod the ball beyond Hugo Lloris' left hand and into the bottom-right corner.

OFFICIAL: Claudio Ranieri sacked by Leicester City

    claudio-ranieri-cropped_1rubnnyfommou1cytkw7wglqlm.jpg

Leicester City have announced that manager Claudio Ranieri has been sacked. The 65-year-old's position has come under increasing scrutiny this season, with Leicester unable to get close to the standards they hit in last term's remarkable Premier League title triumph.

The Foxes have lost seven of their last nine matches, including Wednesday's Champions League last-16 first leg against Sevilla, while a return of just five wins in 25 league matches has left them one point above the relegation zone.

And despite the more encouraging performance in the 2-1 loss in Spain, the club have decided to part company with the manager who led them to title glory only nine months ago.

"Leicester City Football Club has tonight [Thursday] parted company with its first team Manager, Claudio Ranieri," the club said in a statement.

"Claudio, appointed City manager in July 2015, led the Foxes to the greatest triumph in the club's 133-year history last season, as we were crowned champions of England for the first time. His status as the most successful Leicester City manager of all time is without question.

"However, domestic results in the current campaign have placed the club's Premier League status under threat and the board reluctantly feels that a change of leadership, while admittedly painful, is necessary in the club's greatest interest.

"Vice chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: 'This has been the most difficult decision we have had to make in nearly seven years since King Power took ownership of Leicester City. But we are duty-bound to put the club's long-term interests above all sense of personal sentiment, no matter how strong that might be.

"'Claudio has brought outstanding qualities to his office. His skillful management, powers of motivation and measured approach have been reflective of the rich experience we always knew he would bring to Leicester City.

"'His warmth, charm and charisma have helped transform perceptions of the club and develop its profile on a global scale. We will forever be grateful to him for what he has helped us to achieve.

"'It was never our expectation that the extraordinary feats of last season should be replicated this season. Indeed, survival in the Premier League was our first and only target at the start of the campaign. But we are now faced with a fight to reach that objective and feel a change is necessary to maximise the opportunity presented by the final 13 games.'"

Ranieri's assistant manager Paolo Benetti and conditioning coach Andrea Azzalin have also left the club. Another assistant, Craig Shakespeare, and coach Mike Stowell will take temporary charge of the first team.

The decision comes just 16 days after Leicester released a statement in which they expressed their "unwavering support" for Ranieri despite their poor form.Ranieri replaced Nigel Pearson in July 2015 and steered Leicester to arguably the most unexpected title triumph in the history of English football.

They finished 10 points ahead of closest rivals Arsenal, with Ranieri's side winning 23 and losing only three of their 38 matches. They then topped Group G with four wins from six games in their first foray into the Champions League this season.
Leicester host Liverpool at the King Power Stadium in their next match on Monday.

'We didn't have a personal problem' - Mata happy under Mourinho at Man Utd

    juan-mata-manchester-united-2017_1uwhh4mpok0st1nn1ezewm7wlx.jpg

Juan Mata maintains that there was never any “personal problem” between himself and Jose Mourinho that would have made their reunion at Manchester United difficult.

After it was announced that the Portuguese would be inheriting the managerial reins at Old Trafford last summer, speculation immediately surfaced regarding the future of one particular player.Mata was offloaded by Mourinho during his time at Chelsea, with a big-money sale sanctioned in January 2014.

That decision came as a surprise to many, as the Spain international was a multiple Player of the Year award winner at Stamford Bridge.Mourinho, though, felt that the tricky playmaker did not suit his style at that time and a parting of ways was agreed.

Mata insists his exit was very amicable and that he never expected there to be any issues upon Mourinho’s arrival at United. He told the BBC’s Premier League Show: "You know, sometimes in life and football as well, changes comes. You have to embrace it."When Jose came along, I wasn't playing lots.

"I had the chance to go to another great club and it was a good offer for Chelsea as well."Pressed on whether he had fallen out with Mourinho, Mata added: "No, no. I think it was a football reason, style, something like this. "But no, we didn't have a personal problem. We are working together now and it is fine."

Mata is now flourishing under Mourinho at United, with his nine-goal haul helping to keep the Red Devils in the hunt for major honours and his boss to settle in new surroundings. The World Cup winner said of the Mourinho regime: "I think he understands what this club means.

"I think that's very important, to understand the history, the philosophy and what the fans are used to."United are next in action on Sunday when they take on Southampton at Wembley in the EFL Cup final.

Mourinho posts classy tribute to sacked Ranieri

    claudio-ranieri_eadomkw8f3d1urq4i7l1o91a.jpg

Jose Mourinho has posted a classy tribute message to Claudio Ranieri after the Italian was sacked by Leicester City.

The Premier League champions made the announcement on Thursday evening, a day after the Foxes were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla in the Champions League.

After their quite extraordinary title win, Ranieri's side have struggled in the 2016-17 season and find themselves in 17th place in the table with just five league wins from 25 matches.

Leicester were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Millwall at the fifth-round stage, with the club's hierarchy feeling a decision had to be made to arrest their decline.

Ranieri's success last season, that saw him crowned FIFA's Best Coach of the Year, has not been forgotten about, however, with United boss Mourinho sending on a message of support.

The 54-year-old, who, like Ranieri, was also sacked the season after claiming the Premier League title, posted on his Instagram page to remind the Italian that no one can delete his achievements.

He wrote: "CHAMPION OF ENGLAND and FIFA MANAGER of THE YEAR.sacked. Thats the new football claudio.keep smiling AMICO.nobody can delete the history you wrote."

Leicester job favourite Mancini: I am sorry for my friend Ranieri

Roberto Mancini, the bookmakers' favourite to replace Claudio Ranieri as Leicester City manager, says he is "sorry for his friend" after the Premier League champions' decision to sack him.

Ranieri was dismissed on Thursday under a year after he led them to a first top-flight title in their history, having been billed as pre-season relegation candidates. The 65-year-old had struggled to replicate those highs this season and was controversially sacked with Leicester sitting only one point above the relegation zone having suffered five straight league defeats.

Mancini - who played for Leicester in 2001 - has been installed as the early favourite to take the job, but his first thoughts were to pay tribute to Ranieri.

"I am sorry for my friend Ranieri," Mancini wrote on Twitter."He will remain in the history of Leicester, in the heart of Leicester fans and all football lovers."Mancini, 52, has been out of management since losing his job at Inter, who he was leading for a second spell, last August.

He previously managed in England with Manchester City, leading the club for three-and-a-half-years and winning the title in 2012.Mancini has also taken charge of Fiorentina, Lazio and Galatasaray.

Pogba no machine like Messi or Ronaldo, says Mata

    pogba-mata-cropped_4vntmhf6yubc1qbv9dvonu384.jpg

Juan Mata has defended Manchester United team-mate Paul Pogba and says he cannot be expected to match the achievements of fellow superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Pogba returned to Old Trafford for a world-record transfer fee of €105 million after four seasons at Juventus, and has sometimes struggled to live up to the high expectations at United.

Mata feels the criticism is not a result of Pogba underperforming, but a consequence of unrealistic demands."I imagine it is not easy," Mata told the BBC.

"When the big transfer comes and the expectations are high, sometimes people lose perception of reality. "We are not machines. Messi and Ronaldo are the only two [that can score every game]. There is no more."

Pogba will be looking to lift his first major trophy with United when they take on Southampton in the EFL Cup final on Sunday.

'No gratitude' - Spalletti saddened by Ranieri sacking

    claudioranieri-cropped_l5aqhdigqrhl15ihncgyejspv.jpg

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti expressed his sadness after his compatriot and Premier League-winning boss Claudio Ranieri was sensationally sacked by Leicester City.Just nine months on from guiding Leicester to one of the greatest achievements in professional sport, Ranieri lost his job on Thursday amid a relegation battle.

Ranieri defied the odds and England's elite, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham, to lead Leicester to the summit last season.

However, it was not enough to spare Ranieri the sack, with Leicester just a point above the relegation zone ahead of Monday's visit of Liverpool, though the Premier League title-holders are still in contention to reach the Champions League quarter-finals following their 2-1 first-leg loss at Sevilla on Wednesday.Like many in the football community, Spalletti paid tribute to Ranieri as he invited the 65-year-old to the Italian capital.

"There is no gratitude towards Ranieri, he was the man who created this team and its chemistry, which has eventually determined the victory of the title last year," Spalletti said following Thursday's 1-0 Europa League defeat against Villarreal, though Roma still advanced to the last 16 4-1 on aggregate.

"When you win a season in this way, if you are coherent [the club] you accept also the possibility of a relegation," Spalletti added."Between the two things [title and relegation], the relation is so uneven [title victory being more important] in terms of joy and result.

"So the club should not blame anybody, they stick with what they got and take their own responsibilities. Instead in football things happen in a different way. I say so because I had this experience too.

"I am sorry for Ranieri, considering he lives in our city [Rome], should he want to come and visit us, we would be happy to have him, so that he can teach us his experiences."

Alli not to blame for Tottenham's Europa League exit - Pochettino

    delealli-cropped_1dcz5x1ro499h184zf4lpfw17v.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino refused to blame Dele Alli for the club's elimination from the Europa League.

Alli was sent off for a shocking tackle on Brecht Dejaegere in the first half as Tottenham drew 2-2 at home to Gent, who triumphed 3-2 on aggregate in the last-32 tie.

Tottenham hit the front through Christian Eriksen in the 10th minute before a Harry Kane own goal levelled the score on the night and put Gent ahead on aggregate at Wembley.

Alli was then sent off for a scissor-challenge in the 39th minute and while Victor Wanyama restored Tottenham's lead just past the hour-mark, the England international's dismissal always left Spurs with a mountain to climb as Gent made the most of their numerical advantage via Jeremy Perbet eight minutes from time.

Pochettino, however, did not point the finger at Tottenham star Alli post-match.
"He is very disappointed and sad," Pochettino said. "In football, it happens. He knows he made a mistake. Now he tries to move on and improve. In the future we must avoid that situation.

"It's difficult. It's not to justify him but it's a different action, he was fouled before, it was an action that was a clear foul. That's not to blame the referee but the action came in very soon, that tackle, and I think he deserved to be sent off. He knows. But that kind of action can always happen.

"It's only one and a half years he is playing for Tottenham in the Premier League, all that he achieved in a very short period is because he is special and a special boy.

"In the same way, he is how he is. He is very passionate to play football and sometimes this action happens. Now it's time to support him, he is very sad and disappointed in the changing room."

Pochettino added: "It is time for the club and players to improve. It is important for the club to always play European competition, but, for us, it is good to assess the squad and try to improve every season.

"We are disappointed, but it is good for us to analyse to try to change a few things to improve next season and be a better team."
