Man Utd will give everything for Champions League return - Fellaini

    marouane-fellaini-cropped_14pm7dg42t0cv1a7sfa1y520h3.jpg

Marouane Fellaini says Manchester United will give "everything" to secure a return to the Champions League, starting by reaching the Europa League quarter-finals.

Jose Mourinho's side meet Rostov at Old Trafford in a good position to reach the last eight, having secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week.

United are locked in a tense battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, as they lie in sixth place in the table and six points adrift of fourth-place Liverpool, although they have two games in hand.

With victory in the Europa League final in May perhaps offering their most realistic route of a return to Europe's top competition, Fellaini is determined to respond to Monday's FA Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea with a victory on Thursday.

"Monday was a hard game for us at Chelsea - 10 players for one hour," Fellaini told a press conference. "It was difficult to win the game. But we lost, now we look forward. It is important we win the game.

"It was a long trip [back from London] but we are professional. We know how to recover. We trained a little bit yesterday, a nice recovery. We will be ready.

"All the players, staff and supporters want to be in the Champions League next season so we will do everything to be there. We have the squad and the players, we are confident. Everyone will see that against Rostov. We are confident.

"We have played good teams in Europe. In the Premier League, every game is tough. Every game is difficult. We have to take it game by game.

"We have had a lot of games, played all the competitions but all the players are ready to play. We have good fitness, we have good staff, a good recovery department so we are all ready. That's football - to play a lot of games."

Monaco 3 Manchester City 1 (6-6 agg, Monaco win on away goals): Bakayoko has final word as Guardiola's men pay for feeble opening

    monaco-cropped_go80jyizr3id1j0h044v0sym7.jpg

Tiemoue Bakayoko dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League as a swashbuckling Monaco progressed to the quarter-finals on the away-goals rule thanks to a 3-1 win at the Stade Louis II.

Leonardo Jardim's Ligue 1 leaders attacked with the inventive verve they brought to a first-leg thriller at the Etihad Stadium but, unlike when they eventually prevailed 5-3 last month, Pep Guardiola's City failed to muster any response during a first half when they were entirely overwhelmed.

Teen sensation Kylian Mbappe spearheaded Monaco's charge from kick-off, the striker's 11th goal in his past 11 starts coming after eight minutes and Fabinho added a nicely worked second. The Premier League side froze amid the onslaught but diligently wrested control of the contest during the second period, with Leroy Sane's goal a reward for those efforts.

But City switched off from a Thomas Lemar free-kick and Bakayoko headed in his maiden European goal to ensure Guardiola would fail to reach at least the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in his coaching career.

Monaco had to do without top scorer Radamel Falcao due to a hip injury but Mbappe soon showed he was in the mood to continue his electric recent form.

The 18-year-old burst in between the City centre-backs to draw a strong right-handed save from Willy Caballero in the City goal and, when the visitors failed to fully clear the resulting corner, Bernardo Silva picked out Mbappe for a close-range finish.

The Premier League side were struggling to break out of the defensive third, with Monaco doing an excellent job of disrupting their build-up play, and Mbappe rifled home a clinical strike across Caballero in the 16th minute, only to be correctly ruled offside.

A second Monaco goal felt inevitable and it arrived within the half hour – Lemar and Benjamin Mendy combining superbly on the left before the latter's drilled cross evaded Aleksandar Kolarov and Fabinho side-footed firmly into the net.

Jardim's men continued to dominate, with the mercurial Bernardo Silva to the fore, and their passing came with a precision and purpose entirely absent from the work of their visitors, who ended a torrid first half without managing a shot on goal.

Kevin De Bruyne, a notably abject performer for City during the opening 45 minutes when plenty fell into that category, dropped into a deeper midfield role after the break and Guardiola's men gained a measure of control.Raheem Sterling was caught in two minds as he burst into the box in the 56th minute – his eventual cutback saw Sergio Aguero crowded out.

Fellow winger Sane was more decisive when he scooted past Andrea Raggi but a stretching Aguero prodded the Germany youngster's powerful cutback harmlessly over.

City were knocking on the door, but they would rue Aguero's normally sound instincts in front of goal deserting him after David Silva burst the Monaco offside trap in the 65th minute.

Sane ignored the Argentina international inside him when he slotted past onrushing goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and into the side-netting, but he was on hand to showcase timely poaching instincts 19 minutes from time.Sterling located the incisiveness he lacked earlier by getting off a left-footed shot that Subasic could only parry at full stretch to leave Sane with a simple finish.

However, an undulating tie had one final twist as Bakayoko pounced, leaving the FA Cup as the only route to silverware realistically still open to Guardiola in his maiden season.By contrast, Jardim's brilliant Monaco are in the running for an unprecedented quadruple.

Atletico Madrid 0 Bayer Leverkusen 0 (4-2 agg): Simeone's side cruise into quarter-finals

    antoine-griezmann-cropped_ln6yuyanqd9t1u3vd56kuw6xq.jpg

Atletico Madrid reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the fourth time in as many seasons following Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Diego Simeone's side claimed a 4-2 win in the first leg of the last-16 tie in Germany and were never unduly troubled as they produced a composed performance at the Vicente Calderon.

Leverkusen had only beaten Atletico once in their previous five meetings, and although they tested Jan Oblak on a handful of occasions, a stunning comeback rarely looked likely.

Bernd Leno produced two exemplary saves to deny Angel Correa and Koke in the first half, while Antoine Griezmann saw a devilish chip drop just wide, but Atleti chances were scarce in a low-risk performance.

Oblak produced a stunning triple-save to keep the scores level after the imperious Diego Godin was for once beaten, but it proved to be as close as Leverkusen would come to suggesting they could steal a spot in the last eight.

Atleti cruised through the closing stages to secure their spot as the third LaLiga side in the next round, with their attentions now turning to a key league meeting with Sevilla at the Calderon on Sunday.

Atleti looked content to allow Leverkusen to do the early running, but it was not until the 15-minute mark that the first real opportunities for either side arose.

Correa was denied a good chance from close range by a block from Aleksandar Dragovic, and Julian Brandt should have done much better on the resulting counter-attack as he contrived to lose possession when played clean through by Javier Hernandez.

Hernandez fired over the bar with his only sight of goal of the first half as Atleti continued to keep Leverkusen at arm's length, and Leno made two terrific saves to deny Correa and Koke on the break and keep his side in the contest.

Leverkusen missed a good chance to grab a lifeline early in the second half, Kevin Volland dragging a shot wide of Oblak's right-hand post, but Correa was inches from putting the tie to rest after dancing his way into the box from the right before shooting wide.

Griezmann had been quiet for much of the first hour but he almost broke the deadlock in sumptuous style, sending a right-foot chip across Leno's goal and narrowly beyond the far post after springing the offside trap.

Leno had been the busier of the goalkeepers but Oblak produced a moment of brilliance to prevent Leverkusen taking the lead with 22 minutes to play. The Slovenian denied Brandt one-on-one before making two superb reflex saves to deny Volland on the rebound, before Hernandez dragged a shot inches wide.

Hernandez just failed to reach a rebound after Karim Bellarabi brought another save out of Oblak, before Kevin Kampl's precise strike from 25 yards was tipped away from the bottom corner, as Atleti survived a smattering of late pressure to preserve their clean sheet and their place in Friday's quarter-final draw.

Not good enough: Man City are miles from being a Guardiola team

    pep-guardiola-monaco-manchester-city-champions-league-15032017_kjjm4wcvs73d1d30js0pw5fjp.jpg

Manchester City have crashed out of the Champions League thanks largely to a dire first-half showing in Monaco which not only undid their first-leg heroics but has also ensured their recent progress has gone to waste.

Pep Guardiola has overseen a significant turnaround in performances and results since City's Premier League title challenge unravelled at the start of December, but with elimination from Europe on Wednesday night, they now face the prospect of the season petering out.

There is an FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal, which is just a reward for their form at the start of 2017 and which may yet deliver a trophy to end Guardiola's first season in charge at the Etihad Stadium. It is certainly not beyond them.

But only a second-ever appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals is now out of reach. It is the first time Guardiola has gone out at this stage in his career and given City reached the semi-finals last season there will be inquests to determine whether the Catalan has indeed taken the club forward since replacing Manuel Pellegrini.

He has clearly got City on the road to where he wants them to be, and that in itself should be regarded as progress, even if there were few positives to come out of Wednesday's disaster.

It was a soporific first-half display which eventually did it for them. City simply did not turn up. They were outmaneuvered in midfield which allowed Monaco to stream through in attack and stop the visitors from getting any kind of foothold on the match.

Kevin De Bruyne's form has dipped a little of late but here he was the worst player on the pitch. Fernandinho had a first-half shocker, too, though he was swamped as Monaco easily broke past De Bruyne and David Silva.

The hosts' full-backs also provided the latest reminder of exactly why Guardiola wanted to overhaul the position last summer and why he will do so in the coming months. Benjamin Mendy and Djibril Sidibe were fast, strong and alert both going forwards and backwards, and they kept Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane quiet while threatening City's own ageing full-backs, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna, who are both out of contract this summer and will not be retained.

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho were the least Monaco deserved, and it seemed Guardiola would have to make a change at half-time.

He did, but not by bringing on Yaya Toure, who has been in fine form since his shock return to the team in November. De Bruyne was moved deeper to offer more protection and to get himself into the game more, and it must be said it worked - it was just unfortunate for City that he could not produce his usual magic when he was in possession.

"We had a great second half," Guardiola said afterwards. "We showed great personality in a difficult situation away from home. We could have scored three or four goals but we didn't manage to do so. But you cannot have a 45 minutes like that at this level. But we've had a good Champions League. We'll learn from this lesson and try again next year."

Guardiola's men did indeed show great character to shake themselves out of the first-half stupor but they were also aided by Monaco, who came so close to blowing it by sitting back for much of the second half and waiting for City to come at them. It always looked like they were playing into the visitors' hands and so it finally proved when Sane raced in to tap in the loose ball from close range, having earlier seen Sterling and Sergio Aguero miss fine chances.

City would have gone through at 2-1 but another of their weaknesses was exposed as Monaco grabbed the tie's decisive goal. Guardiola, realising the tools he has to work with only after some humbling defeats in December, has simplified his tactics and tightened his rearguard considerably as a result, and had been rewarded with seven clean sheets from 10 games heading into this clash.

But he knows that, individually, many of his defenders will always be prone to mistakes. This time there was a collective lapse as City allowed Tiemoue Bakayoko to glide into the box unmarked and head home.

City got away with their mistakes in the first leg but would not here. That game at the Etihad Stadium encapsulated the current state of this City team; vibrant up front and better at the back, but by no means the finished article. In the south of France on Wednesday, however, their weaknesses were ruthlessly exploited and their serenity in front of goal deserted them.

The first leg summed up the state of the City squad and hinted at better things to come, but the tie overall highlighted their current standing in European football. They are far from a Guardiola team. They are not good enough.

Oblak proud as Atletico reach fourth Champions League quarter-final in a row

    jan-oblak-cropped_egdtmbaxz0do1uo2kse5tbcve.jpg

Jan Oblak says Atletico Madrid should be proud at having reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the fourth season in succession.

Diego Simeone's side held Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday, having secured a 4-2 victory in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Germany.

Oblak produced a fine display that included a spectacular triple-save early in the second half to deny Julian Brandt and Kevin Volland, as Atleti delivered a disciplined performance that ensured their aggregate lead rarely looked under threat.

The Slovenia international was somewhat frustrated not to win the game but believes last season's beaten finalists deserve credit for reaching the last eight once again.

"We feel very good," he told BeIN Sport. "Atletico are in the quarter-finals for the fourth year in a row and it's very important for the club."We fought to win. It didn't turn out like that but the important thing is to be in the quarters.

"Of course, it's not easy to be in the best eight teams in Europe for four years. I hope we keep improving and keep achieving big things."Atletico are the third LaLiga team to reach the quarter-finals, with Barcelona and holders Real Madrid having already progressed.

The draw for the next round takes place on Friday in Nyon.

Besiktas 4 Olympiacos 1 (5-2 agg): Gunes' men shrug off Aboubakar dismissal

    vincent-aboubakar_4zad2kygbe0h1jfzj8lv43tt2.jpg

Vincent Aboubakar's dismissal did not prevent 10-man Besiktas from moving into the quarter-finals of the Europa League as Ryan Babel struck twice in a 4-1 home win against Olympiacos.

Besiktas had a narrow advantage from the first leg after netting an away goal in the 1-1 draw in Greece and they soon took a further step towards the last-eight through Aboubakar.

The forward's downward header from a floated Anderson Talisca centre got the Turkish side off to a flying start and their lead was soon doubled from another right-wing cross.

Ricardo Quaresma provided the assist this time, Babel controlling before lashing in a shot through a crowd of bodies that goalkeeper Nicola Leali perhaps should have saved.

Besiktas seemed to be cruising but the visitors gave themselves hope when Tarik Elyounoussi's acrobatic volley deflected in at the near post after 31 minutes and momentum appeared to swing when Aboubakar was sent off before the interval for violent conduct after clashing with Takis Retsos.

But Olympiacos could not make their extra man count and when Babel grabbed his second of the game and Cenk Tosun scored from the bench, their bid to reach the last eight of the competition for the first time failed, with Besiktas now unbeaten in their previous eight European home games.

Quaresma forced the first save of the game, the winger's free-kick beaten away from the top-left corner by Leali.

And the hosts' bright start led to the opening goal inside 10 minutes, Aboubakar again on target with his fifth European goal of the season.

The Cameroon striker scored the equaliser in the first leg and he pounced following a period of Besiktas pressure, heading home Talisca's right-wing cross to put his side in front.

Besiktas soon looked to be in total control as Babel doubled their lead after 22 minutes when Quaresma's cross found the Netherlands international in the box and his shot had too much power for Leali.

Olympiacos had barely threatened when a spectacular goal from Elyounoussi got the Greek champions back in the tie with their first shot.

Aly Cissokho stood up a cross to the back post and Elyounoussi's scissor-kick volley took a small deflection off Adriano to beat Fabri in the Besiktas goal.

Besiktas' narrow lead became even more precarious when Aboubakar was dismissed for senselessly aiming a headbutt at Retsos six minutes before half-time.

Fabri turned Konstantinos Fortounis' free-kick over the crossbar after 58 minutes as the visitors sought to make their numerical advantage pay, then Quaresma bent a shot wide on the break.

With Olympiacos committing men forward Besiktas wrapped up the tie with another incisive counter-attack with 15 minutes to play, Babel's low shot squirming under Leali's weak right hand.

And gloss was added to the scoreline by Tosun two minutes after his introduction, the striker dinking neatly over Leali after timing his run onto Talisca's pass to bring up his 20th goal of the season send Senol Gunes' men through to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002-03.

Krasnodar 0 Celta Vigo 2 (1-4 agg): Mallo and Aspas down Russians

    iagoaspas-cropped_bi52yg30ji2o19zqn6bx2h88h.jpg

Captain Hugo Mallo and top scorer Iago Aspas eased Celta Vigo into the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a 2-0 win at Krasnodar.

It meant a 4-1 aggregate victory for Eduardo Berizzo's side, who put disappointing recent LaLiga form behind them to ride out pressure either side of half-time before Mallo's first goal in European competition arrived.

The full-back was one of only three players remaining from the scratch side that lost 1-0 at Villarreal on Sunday, with Berizzo's decision to prioritise continental success rewarded by a composed team performance.

A trademark Celta breakaway goal extinguished any lingering doubt 10 minutes from time, as Aspas linked smoothly with forward colleague John Guidetti to lift a crisp finish over the onrushing Andrei Sinitsyn.

Krasnodar's misery was compounded when midfielder Charles Kabore collected a second yellow card in an aerial challenge with Jozabed - meaning he exited the tournament four minutes before the rest of his team-mates.

The home side were forced into a late change Cristian Ramirez pulled up in the warm-up, with Sergei Petrov coming in at left-back, and they enjoyed their first opening in the ninth minute – Wanderson shooting too close to Sergio Alvarez in the Celta goal from a tight angle.

Alvarez's opposite number Sinitsyn pulled off a more taxing stop, tipping over athletically when Denmark international Pione Sisto cut inside from the left flank and let fly.

Mauricio Pereyra's 29th minute free-kick swerved wickedly but Alvarez recovered from his initial misjudgement to push it to safety.Krasnodar continued to press as half-time approached, with the dangerous Viktor Claesson twice shooting narrowly wide.

The breakthrough proved elusive and at half-time Igor Shalimov sent on Russia international Pavel Mamaev, recently back from a long-term knee injury absence, in place of the ineffective Vyacheslav Podberezkin on the right-hand side of his attack.

But the hosts were left with a mountain to climb in the 52nd minute, when Aspas' shot from Guidetti's cutback was bravely blocked by Petrov and the ball ran kindly for Mallo to smash into the top corner from 10 yards.Substitutes Joaozinho and Ricardo Laborde sparked an admirable final charge for Krasnodar – the latter crossing for Wanderson to lash a half-volley wide.

Moments later, Joaozinho blazed across the face of goal with Alvarez rooted to the spot, but the desperate nature of their predicament meant Krasnodar left the back door open.

Aspas got his 20th of the season when he streamed on to Guidetti's lofted return pass to confidently lob Sinitsyn, before Kabore added to the woes of a forgettable night for Shalimov.

Berizzo's attention will now return to LaLiga and a Sunday trip to Deportivo, where Celta must look to end a four-match winless run in Spain's top flight.

Ajax 2 Copenhagen 0 (3-2 agg): Traore and Dolberg seal quarter-final spot

    dolberg-cropped_sacck8v8eh00198vk74bv7t6c.jpg

Ajax overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the Europa League quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Copenhagen at the Amsterdam Arena.

A Bertrand Traore header and Kasper Dolberg's penalty reversed the Danish champions' advantage from last week and sealed a 3-2 aggregate win for the 1992 tournament winners.

It is just the second defeat of the season for Copenhagen, who sit 12 points clear at the top of the Danish Superliga, but they can have few complaints after an uncharacteristically limp display against a fired-up Ajax side.Inspired by the raucous home support, Peter Bosz's side won the contest during a first half in which they scored both goals and played some thrilling football.

Ajax are still in contention for the double - their next visitors to the Amsterdam Arena are table-topping Feyenoord - who currently hold a four-point lead at the summit of the Eredivisie.

The hosts began in a hurry as they bid to wipe out the first-leg deficit and almost scored after just two minutes when Copenhagen keeper Robin Olsen's hurried clearance from Jores Okore's underhit back-pass struck Amin Younes and bounced just wide.

Andre Onana had to be alert at the other end to tip a deflected Jan Gregus shot wide, before Lasse Schone stung Olsen's fingertips with a rasping drive during a frantic start.A flowing Ajax move that began at the feet of Onana culminated in the hosts' 23rd-minute opener.

Traore was the eventual goalscorer, nodding into an empty net following Younes' incisive run and shot from the left, which forced Olsen to parry straight onto the Chelsea loanee's head.

Hakim Ziyech charged through on goal but skewed wide as Ajax sought a deserved second, which then arrived in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.
After being tripped by Okore, it was Dolberg who stepped up to slam a penalty into the bottom-right corner.

Ziyech lashed a rising shot wide just after the interval as Ajax picked up where they left off.

The unmarked Traore then wasted a glorious chance for his second after another flowing counterattack, firing wide past a prone Olsen from inside the penalty area, before the Copenhagen keeper got down quickly to block a near-post Younes shot.Dolberg was next who should have put the tie to bed, but he could only turn a fierce low cross from Nick Viergever onto the post.

Copenhagen tried to punish Ajax's profligacy and push for the goal that would take force extra time, but could not get any change out of a resolute home backline, who comfortably held on to seal the Dutch side's progression into the last eight.

:love:Manchester United 1 Rostov 0 (2-1 agg): Mata decisive as Mourinho's men progress

    mata-cropped_8hhhso9xshyz1no00v2186idx.jpg

An eye-catching Juan Mata goal secured Manchester United an underwhelming 1-0 win over Rostov to book their passage to the last eight of the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho's side – held 1-1 in Russia – were wasteful in front of goal for much of the match at Old Trafford and looked to be heading for a goalless stalemate before Mata prodded home 20 minutes from time at the end of a well-worked move from the hosts.

United were dominant throughout, with Rostov offering little attacking threat and generally relying on defensive stubbornness and good fortune – the post coming to their rescue twice in the first half to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic at bay.

The home side suffered the blow of losing Paul Pogba – who enjoyed a strong first half – to a suspected hamstring injury just after the break and their hold on the midfield suffered slightly as a result.

But Mata finished off a fine United move to punish a Rostov error and that goal proved to be enough, though Sergio Romero was forced into a superb late stop to prevent the match going into extra time.

United made an early statement of intent, as Nikita Medvedev was forced to parry Marcos Rojo's header and then Ibrahimovic struck the post from a tight angle as he pounced on the rebound.

Ibrahimovic made a nuisance of himself again 15 minutes in, but he fired over when trying to beat Medvedev from an acute angle for a second time instead of teeing up Henrikh Mkhitaryan after racing on to Mata's pinpoint pass.

Mkhitaryan's involvement steadily became more significant and he was denied a penalty just before the half-hour mark following a blatant push in the back by Medvedev. The Armenian almost got his revenge shortly after, but he clipped a delicate effort agonisingly wide of the left-hand upright after another fine Mata pass.

Ibrahimovic was then kept out by the woodwork again 11 minutes before the break, drilling a fierce effort onto the right-hand post after cleverly sidestepping Miha Mevlja in the area.

Pogba's forced replacement two minutes into the second period left United with a creative void in midfield, as his replacement – Marouane Fellaini – provided more of a defensive presence.

And Rostov tested Romero for the first time shortly after – Sardar Azmoun seeing a curling 20-yard effort pushed away by the Argentinian. That chance marked the switch to a more purposeful set-up from the away side, but that only served to give United more space to attack.

And they took full advantage 20 minutes from time, as United pounced on an error and quickly broke forward, with Mkhitaryan ultimately sending a low cross into the box which Ibrahimovic flicked on to Mata for an easy finish.

Rostov did go close to levelling and taking the match to extra time, but Romero dived down to his right to tip substitute Aleksandr Bukharov's header around the post in acrobatic fashion and United ultimately clinched their spot in the quarter-finals.

Roma 2 Lyon 1 (4-5 agg): Lopes shines in thriller as Spalletti's men crash out

Anthony Lopes put in a stellar performance as Lyon claimed a dramatic 5-4 aggregate victory over Roma to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

Lyon's goalkeeper pulled off a string of spectacular saves throughout a tremendous contest at Stadio Olimpico as the Ligue 1 team progressed despite losing 2-1 on the night. In a game which matched the first leg of this classic European tie for its remarkable intensity, Roma hit the woodwork through Antonio Rudiger in an action-packed opening before Mouctar Diakhaby put Bruno Genesio's men ahead.

Roma immediately pulled level through Kevin Strootman's fortunate finish, but Lopes was on hand to twice deny the midfielder a second as the half wore on.

Lucas Tousart's own-goal on the hour-mark set-up an enthralling finish as Roma laid siege to Lyon's goal - Stephan El Shaarawy going closest to what would have been a decisive strike, while Edin Dzeko had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside call.

Maxwel Cornet squandered two gilt-edged opportunities at the other end, but those misses mattered little in the end as, in spite of a late Roma onslaught, Lyon's defence held firm to secure a famous win.Roma were on top in a blistering opening to the second leg - Rudiger rattling the crossbar from close range before Lopes twice denied Mohamed Salah.

For all their dominance though, Roma found themselves behind after 16 minutes.
In a near carbon-copy of his goal from the first leg, Lyon youngster Diakhaby capitalised on poor Roma marking to head home powerfully from Mathieu Valbuena's free-kick.

Lyon's lead was cancelled out within a minute, however, as Strootman managed to bundle the ball over the line after connecting with a fantastic Daniele De Rossi delivery.

Lopes came to Lyon's rescue again as the interval approached, pulling off a stunning double save to prevent Strootman doubling his and Roma's tally before reacting instinctively to keep out Dzeko's strike.

Lyon's shot stopper continued in the same vein after the restart, making another superb series of saves - from Nainggolan and Dzeko respectively - to keep the score level.

Valbuena should have put the result beyond all doubt a few moments later, but the former Marseille playmaker somehow skewed his effort over from point-blank range.Genesio's side were then made to pay for that miss, substitute El Shaarawy making an immediate impact as his low cross deflected in off the unfortunate Tousart.

El Shaarawy could have completed a quick-fire turn-around, but the winger failed to find the bottom corner after engineering space for himself in the area, before Cornet blazed over at the other end.

Cornet had the opportunity to atone for his miss late on when, after Dzeko had seen a goal disallowed for a close offside call against El Shaarawy, he raced through unchallenged, only to allow Alisson to dive in and smother the chance.

Despite Cornet's wastefulness, though, Lyon rallied to survive a late glut of Roma pressure - led by veteran Francesco Totti - and seal a place in the last eight.

Borussia Monchengladbach 2 Schalke 2 (3-3 agg, Schalke win on away goals): Bentaleb penalty sends visitors through

    nabil-bentaleb-cropped_1m7q3rllakcci13xnazji1kjhd.jpg

Schalke produced a sensational second-half fightback to draw 2-2 at Borussia Monchengladbach and earn a place in the Europa League quarter-finals via the away goals rule.

After the first leg had finished 1-1 under the closed roof at the Veltins-Arena a week ago, Gladbach seized control of the return fixture by moving 2-0 in front by half-time at Borussia-Park.Andreas Christensen put Dieter Hecking's side ahead before Mahmoud Dahoud thumped in a second from distance to put daylight between the domestic rivals.

However, Schalke - who are two places and as many points below Gladbach in the Bundesliga table - were back in the game and the tie when Leon Goretzka struck with a fortuitous effort.

And Gladbach were left reeling when Dahoud was penalised for handball in the area, allowing Nabil Bentaleb to convert the resulting penalty that sent Markus Weinzierl's men into the draw for the last eight.

Guido Burgstaller - scorer of Schalke's equaliser in the first leg - steered an early header just wide of the target before Gladbach lost Fabian Johnson through injury.

The home side should have taken the lead in the 18th minute when Raffael's run and cross down the left found Josip Drmic unmarked eight yards out but, in attempting to put the ball out of goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann's reach, the Swiss forward directed his header the wrong side of the post.

Drmic made amends for that poor miss with a cushioned nod-down from a free-kick that teed up Christensen's opener.

The on-loan Chelsea defender had enough time to take a touch inside the area before aiming a shot at goal, albeit his attempt needed a deflection off Benedikt Howedes to find the net.In contrast, Dahoud did not need any assistance to get Gladbach's second on the stroke of half-time.

With Schalke backing off, the midfielder let fly with a right-footed rocket that flashed beyond the rooted Fahrmann. In a deep hole heading into the second half, Schalke's recovery mission was kick-started by Goretzka's lucky goal in the 54th minute.

A poor clearance from Jannik Vestergaard allowed the midfielder to take aim with his left foot, although his low drive needed a horrible bobble to get beyond goalkeeper Yann Sommer's dive.

Dahoud presented the visitors the chance to draw level when he needlessly thrust an arm out inside his area, giving referee Mark Clattenburg little option but to award a penalty.

Bentaleb punished the error by scoring from the spot - just as he had done in his side's 4-2 Bundesliga loss at the same venue on March 4 - and suddenly Schalke were in the driving seat with just over 20 minutes remaining.

And Schalke stood firm under a late onslaught to progress, meaning they are the last German team left standing in the competition
