Inter 2 AC Milan 2: Romagnoli and Zapata snatch stunning derby draw

    alessio-romagnoli-cropped_ftkzm6l11ur41ov07idn4h2e6.jpg

AC Milan rescued a 2-2 derby draw against Inter with the last kick of the match as they dealt a blow to their city rivals' European hopes.

First-half goals from Antonio Candreva and Mauro Icardi had looked set to give Stefano Pioli's men a much-needed win in their Europa League chase but Alessio Romagnoli and Cristian Zapata salvaged a draw with goals in the 83rd and 97th minutes.

Pressure has been mounting on Pioli, while the mood in the Milan camp has been one of positivity following six victories in their last nine and the long-awaited completion of the €740million takeover by Chinese investors this week.

Milan started brightly at a packed San Siro, with tifos and smoke grenades covering the stands, but Candreva followed up his goal in the 2-2 derby draw in November with a well-taken opener in the 36th minute.Icardi doubled the lead before half-time with his first goal against Milan and the Nerazzurri had looked in firm control until a remarkable finale.

Romagnoli stabbed in from Suso's cross to give his side a lifeline before Zapata turned the ball off the crossbar and over the line following a corner in the seventh minute of stoppage time.Vincenzo Montella's side stay in sixth place with the draw, two points above Inter, who are now without a win in four matches.

Milan were gifted a chance with barely 90 seconds on the clock, with Gerard Deulofeu seeing a shot blocked and Carlos Bacca skewing the ball over the crossbar after Roberto Gagliardini had lost possession in his own half.

Deulofeu struck the base of the post with a low strike from the right of the area but Inter threatened straight away on the counter-attack in a breathless opening 20 minutes.

The match descended into a more scrappy phase but Samir Handanovic had to be alert to halt another darting run down the left from Deulofeu, who had looked the brightest player on the pitch.

But it was Inter who drew first blood with their first goal before half-time in a derby match since Walter Samuel in 2012. Gagliardini's simple long ball from halfway allowed Candreva to run in behind Mattia De Sciglio and loop a clever finish over Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the bottom-left corner. Two minutes before half-time, Inter seized control of the match. Ivan Perisic combined well with Joao Mario down the left and drilled a low cross into the path of Icardi, who fired into the gaping goal from six yards.

Montella's side pushed for a lifeline after the break but Perisic should have made it 3-0, the Croatia winger shooting straight at Donnarumma after being picked out by Icardi following a swift counter-attack.

Handanovic tipped a bouncing Deulofeu strike past his left-hand post but survived a nervy moment when he lost his grip on the ball under pressure from Bacca, who was unable to fashion a chance to shoot.

Milan kept up the pressure and Romagnoli gave them hope of a comeback in the 83rd minute, prodding Suso's cross from the right beyond Handanovic from the edge of the six-yard box.

And Zapata sent the Rossoneri faithful into raptures in the last seconds of the match, steering the ball off the bar and clearly over the line following Manuel Locatelli's corner, with the referee blowing for full-time just as the Milan celebrations began.

Tottenham 4 Bournemouth 0: Kane on target as Spurs extend streak

    harrykane-cropped_146wljjvd6pav1byar5n1l8j3g.jpg

Tottenham completed a run of seven consecutive top-flight victories for the first time in 50 years by beating Bournemouth 4-0 at White Hart Lane.

Mauricio Pochettino's side put on a consummate attacking performance as they bettered their 2015-16 points total and equalled the previous streak set by the likes of Jimmy Greaves, Terry Venables and Dave Mackay in the Spurs team of 1967.

The victory, which came courtesy of first-half goals from Mousa Dembele and Son Heung-min and second-half strikes by Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen, moved Spurs within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea, who travel to Manchester United on Sunday.

Dembele had not scored since January 2016 but he hit the net with aplomb after 16 minutes, before Kane's flick set up Son to double Spurs' lead, and the England striker scored his 20th league goal of the season early in the second half.
Janssen then rounded off the win in stoppage time.

Defeat left Bournemouth and their leaky defence in danger of being dragged back into the relegation scrap, while Spurs maintained the imperious form that is forcing their London rivals to keep looking over their shoulder in the title run-in.

Kane was caught offside when an early chance fell to him at close range after six minutes, before Kyle Walker broke to tee up Dembele, whose sweetly struck low drive from outside the box was well saved by Artur Boruc.

The Bournemouth goalkeeper was helpless to prevent Dembele from scoring his first goal of the season three minutes later, when Christian Eriksen's corner was allowed to bounce through the box and the Belgian rattled the ball through Boruc's legs and into the far corner of the net.

The visitors barely had time to react before Jack Wilshere's loose ball fell to Harry Kane and the striker played a neat back-heeled pass into the path of Son, who burst into the box and nutmegged Boruc for his 19th goal of the season.

Spurs' football was fluent and their attacking incessant, rendering Bournemouth virtual spectators in a first half that would have ended with the hosts three goals to the good had Eriksen aimed a little lower when he lashed a shot over the bar five minutes before the break.

The second half was two minutes old when Kane collected Dele Alli's cross and shook off Simon Francis before firing the ball low into the corner of the net from the middle of the penalty area, taking his goal tally for the season to 25 in all competitions.

Tottenham's football was worthy of their best run of form in half a century, and Kane played a neat one-two with Son before curling a shot that lacked the power to beat Boruc.

Bournemouth finally managed a shot on target in the 74th minute but Harry Arter's attempt failed to trouble Hugo Lloris, before Ben Davies' dipping low drive forced a good save by Boruc.

Son was full of running right into the final stages and his endeavour deserved a second and Tottenham's fourth when he broke down the right, but his shot hit the side-netting.

Spurs did make the result more emphatic in injury time when a well-worked short corner reached Janssen at the near post and he beat Boruc at the second attempt to score his first Premier League goal from open play.

Pescara 0 Juventus 2: Higuain at the double as Dybala suffers injury

    gonzalohiguain-cropped_gnszlvhvqa9t1mdcbexvb8jrb.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice as Juventus followed their victory over Barcelona with a 2-0 win at Pescara in Serie A, although Paulo Dybala suffered a worrying injury ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

While Massimiliano Allegri rested six from his team's midweek European triumph, Higuain and Dybala - the latter of whom netted twice in the 3-0 first-leg win - both kept their places.

Higuain took centre stage as he peppered the Pescara goal with shots in the opening 45 minutes and twice beat goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo, but Dybala's second-half knock gave Allegri cause for concern just four days before a trip to Camp Nou.

Although the 23-year-old tried to play on after an apparent blow to his ankle in a 47th-minute challenge with Sulley Muntari, he again went down and was replaced by Stefano Sturaro shortly afterwards to leave Juve worrying over their forward's fitness.

The champions' title defence was at least boosted as the bottom-of-the-table side rarely threatened after a bright start, while second-placed Roma's draw against Atalanta saw the Bianconeri's gap at the top stretched to eight points with six games remaining.Gaston Brugman's snapshot brought a save from Neto after just eight seconds and the energetic hosts stretched an unfamiliar Juve backline in the early stages.

But Allegri's men soon found their feet and Higuain squared for Mario Mandzukic to test Fiorillo from close range, before the Argentina international fired off target.
The breakthrough arrived for Juve in the 22nd minute, with Juan Cuadrado swiftly pouncing on the rebound from his own low shot to tee up Higuain for a simple finish into an open goal.

Higuain then squandered an opportunity to double his tally as he nodded Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross wide and Mandzukic was similarly wasteful as he escaped the Pescara defence to drag a volley past the left-hand post.

As Juve continued to build momentum, Fiorillo saved well after Higuain created space for a shot with an inventive piece of skill on the right, before the brilliant Cuadrado picked out Mandzukic, who headed over. Two minutes before half-time, Higuain prodded in a second as he stretched onto Mandzukic's knockdown ahead of Fiorillo.

The goalkeeper was able to keep Dybala at bay with a smart stop moments later and there was concern for the Juve forward at the start of the second half as he went down under a heavy challenge from Muntari and was later withdrawn.

Substitute Sturaro ran through to prod a tame finish at Fiorillo, but Juve cruised through the remaining minutes with Pescara offering little in response.Allegri and his side can now turn their attentions back to European action and Barca, with close attention sure to be paid to Dybala's fitness.

Borussia Dortmund 3 Eintracht Frankfurt 1: Aubameyang sets new mark for league goals

    aubameyang-cropped_1tslnxq7nsp541i2hr4giq5zxk.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ensured 2016-17 will go down as his most prolific league season to date with the final goal in Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Aubameyang passed up a pair of decent second-half chances before finishing a swift counter-attack to take his tally for the Bundesliga season to 26, improving on last-term's 25-goal haul.

The Gabon international's strike provided the gloss to a result that saw Dortmund recover from successive defeats to league leaders Bayern Munich and Monaco, the latter postponed by a day after an attack on the German side's team bus on Tuesday that hospitalised Marc Bartra.

Coach Thomas Tuchel spoke of the need for his side to rediscover the fun in their football ahead of this match and they got off to a great start with Marco Reus marking his return from six weeks out with a thigh injury by scoring inside 120 seconds.

Marco Fabian made up for a glaring early miss with a fine equaliser, but Sokratis Papastathopoulos sent Dortmund into half-time ahead with searing drive from the edge of the box.

Reus did not return for the second half with Tuchel perhaps looking ahead to Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg in Monaco, but Aubameyang ensured the hosts did not relinquish their lead with a dinked finish that sends them 10 points clear of fifth-placed Hertha Berlin.

Reus took less than two minutes to reaffirm his importance to Dortmund. After showing great awareness to leave Aubameyang's clipped pass for Christian Pulisic due to being in an offside position, he span away and flicked the United States international's cutback home with a brilliant finish with his trailing leg.

Dortmund controlled possession but Frankfurt were threatening on the counter-attack and created two great chances to level either side of a Lukas Hradecky save that denied Shinji Kagawa.

Fabian failed to steer Branimir Hrgota's square pass home from just outside the six-yard box in the ninth minute before Mijat Gacinovic had a powerful volley turned over by Roman Burki.

Frankfurt pulled level in the 29th minute when Fabian drilled a phenomenal 20-yard strike into the top-right corner, a slight deflection off Nuri Sahin helping it on its way.

However, the Mexican was outdone five minutes later when Sokratis dribbled past Omar Mascarell and arrowed a thunderous shot beyond the helpless Hradecky from just outside the box.

Tuchel replaced Reus and Sven Bender with Ousmane Dembele and Matthias Ginter for the second half, which began in a low-key fashion that starkly contrasted the opening period.

A low left-wing cross from Dembele found Aubameyang in the box but the striker steered his shot over the top. With Dortmund struggling to improve upon their lead, Fabian shaved the outside of the upright with a warning shot from 25 yards with 22 minutes remaining.

Aubameyang sent another header over the top before adding a fine finish to Dembele's throughball in the 84th minute as Dortmund broke at speed following a Frankfurt corner, and their attention will now turn to overcoming their 3-2 quarter-final deficit at Monaco.

RB Leipzig 4 Freiburg 0: Hasenhuttl's men clinch top-four spot

    timowerner-cropped_59zyvw4z4s491gl9yzjfbm987.jpg

RB Leipzig guaranteed their place in the top four - and at least a spot in the Champions League qualifiers - with a 4-0 win over Freiburg at Red Bull Arena.

The result extended Leipzig's run of consecutive victories to four and they have now won their last three home games without conceding a goal, ensuring league leaders Bayern Munich haven't been able to sit comfortably in the closing stages of the season.

Sixth-placed Freiburg, who went into the game on the back of two straight wins, resisted Leipzig's early pressure and Caglar Soyuncu made a superb tackle to deny Naby Keita as the midfielder sprinted into the box after 34 minutes.

Two minutes later Yussuf Poulsen gave Leipzig the lead when he met Emil Forsberg's looping cross with a well-aimed header that beat Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow.

Four minutes before half-time, a wayward Freiburg throw-in allowed Poulsen to play in Timo Werner who bore down on goal before sliding a shot into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Keita got on the scoresheet after six minutes of the second half, scoring his eighth goal of the season when the ball sat up nicely for him on the edge of the box at the end of a neat passing move, and Diego Demme wrapped up the win by scoring with a diving header in the final minute, suffering a boot to the face in the process.

Crystal Palace 2 Leicester City 2: Benteke to the rescue to salvage draw for Eagles

    christian-benteke-cropped_d7zlcq538goi1bg64hj8rcdq5.jpg

Goals from Yohan Cabaye and Christian Benteke helped Crystal Palace to a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Leicester City at Selhurst Park after Robert Huth and Jamie Vardy had handed the reigning champions a two-goal lead.

The visitors appeared to be on their way to victory after Vardy had made it 2-0 early in the second half, but a resurgent Palace dug deep as Cabaye quickly cut the deficit and Benteke earned a deserved point for Sam Allardyce's side 20 minutes from time.

Palace were high on confidence heading into Saturday's encounter after winning five out of their last six games, including victories over Chelsea and the 3-0 home triumph against Arsenal last time out.

Leicester, meanwhile, came off the back of defeats versus Everton and Atletico Madrid after winning their previous six games under new boss Craig Shakespeare.
The contest did not initially go to form, though, and Huth put the visitors ahead after just six minutes, before Vardy's goal finally stirred Allardyce's charges into life.

Cabaye pulled one back within just two minutes and it fell to Benteke to head in the leveller, with Palace looking the more likely to seal a win late on, though Leicester held firm.

The result leaves Palace seven points clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining, while the Foxes are two points better off. as Huth netted. Palace's defence failed to adequately deal with a long throw from Christian Fuchs and the towering centre-back headed home from close range to put the visitors ahead.

Palace quickly went in search of an equaliser and Benteke came close to restoring parity in the 16th minute, chesting down Joel Ward's cross from the right before testing Kasper Schmeichel with a low shot from six yards out, only for the Leicester goalkeeper to deny him with a superb reflex save.

Andros Townsend was next to threaten for Palace after a clever throughball from Ward down the right in the closing stages of the first half, but the winger hesitated a second too long to allow Huth to close the gap and block his shot from a narrow angle.

The visitors then doubled their lead early in the second half when Vardy found the net following a rapid counter-attack, beating goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey with a left-footed shot into the far corner after some good work from the impressive Huth and Riyad Mahrez.

Allardyce's men refused to throw in the towel, though, and Cabaye promptly hit back, firing a low shot past the helpless Schmeichel after Jeffrey Schlupp's low cross from the left.

There was still more to come from the home side and Benteke brought them level in the 70th minute, beating his man to the ball after Townsend's cross from the left before heading home from the edge of the six-yard box.

The Belgium international came close to a winner soon after, but Schmeichel showed his class with a fine save to preserve a point for the Champions League quarter-finalists.

Everton 3 Burnley 1: Barkley, Lukaku to the fore as Toffees extend winning run

    lukaku-cropped_lqt9upuhpqs21tvp7mewvtll4.jpg

Ross Barkley ended a difficult week in positive fashion as he helped Everton make it eight Premier League home victories in a row by overcoming Burnley 3-1 at Goodison Park.

Playmaker Barkley, who was assaulted in a Liverpool bar in the wake of Everton's win over Leicester City last time out, celebrated in the crowd after his deflected strike beat Tom Heaton in the 71st minute.

After a tepid first-half display, Ronald Koeman's side clicked into gear three minutes after the interval - Phil Jagielka's third goal in as many games putting Everton ahead.

Burnley failed to make the most of some good chances prior to half-time, though Sam Vokes made no mistake from the penalty spot following Joel Robles' calamitous error to restore parity.

But, on the 28th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, it was the Toffees who came out on top when Barkley's effort struck Michael Keane and then Ben Mee to put them back ahead, before Romelu Lukaku equalled Dixie Dean's record of scoring in nine consecutive home games.

The victory lifts Everton - temporarily at least - into fifth place above Manchester United and Arsenal, while Burnley's wretched away form goes on.

Burnley started brightly, and could well have snatched a goal when Jagielka's sloppy pass put Robles under pressure after Lukaku had tested Heaton at the other end.

Everton's goalkeeper was caught out of position for Burnley's next chance, but his blushes were spared by Barkley, who got back to clear Keane's header off the line.

Robles had to be on form to keep the scores level just after the half-hour mark, coming out swiftly to keep out Vokes' strike.Vokes was gifted a golden opportunity moments later, but the Wales striker failed to apply the finish after capitalising on another Jagielka error.

That chance seemed to spark Everton into life - Mason Holgate drawing a superb stop out of Heaton before Kevin Mirallas went close with a free-kick that deflected just wide.

Enner Valencia replaced Idrissa Gueye at the start of the second half, and the Ecuadorian forced Heaton into action with a venomous drive from the edge of the area. But Everton did have their lead soon afterwards.Jagielka found himself unmarked from six yards out and - despite Heaton's best efforts - the Everton captain bundled the ball over the line.

Everton's lead was short-lived though, Vokes calmly converting from the spot after he had been brought down by Robles in the hosts' area.Mirallas should have restored Everton's lead on the hour mark, but the Belgian could only rattle the left-hand upright from close range.

However, Everton finally restored their advantage with just under 20 minutes remaining, Barkley's strike finding the bottom corner courtesy of two deflections.
Everton were not finished there, though, and continued their superb scoring run when Lukaku rolled Keane and thumped home to add gloss to the victory.

Sporting Gijon 2 Real Madrid 3: Brilliant Isco double snatches win for Zidane's men

    isco-cropped_wwabmbr2jlw61587jtk4bldyy.jpg

Isco kept Real Madrid's LaLiga title charge on track with a virtuoso performance to rescue a 3-2 win at struggling Sporting Gijon.

The Spain international's future has been a source of constant speculation this season and he was recalled to Zinedine Zidane's first XI as one of nine changes from the Champions League win at Bayern Munich in midweek.A superlative solo goal from the 24-year-old in the 17th minute got Madrid on terms, three minutes on from Duje Cop's equally enjoyable opener.

On-loan Athletic Bilbao midfielder Mikel Vesga inventively made Sporting's first and put them ahead again with his first LaLiga goal five minutes into the second half.

Alvaro Morata, leading the line as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale sat out, headed his 12th league goal of the season for Madrid's second equaliser and, with eight seconds of normal time to play, Isco screamed for the ball on the edge of the box and rifled an unerring strike into the bottom left corner.

The result puts the pressure back on Barcelona, who must beat Real Sociedad later on Saturday to avoid the gap at the summit being greater than three points when the Santiago Bernabeu hosts El Clasico next weekend.

Heartbroken Sporting are five points from safety with six games remaining and Rubi will wonder why it took the visit of the European champions to produce such a performance.

Lucas Vazquez powered over from Danilo's superb left-wing cross when he should have opened the scoring – something Sporting did in style soon afterwards.

Vesga was the architect of his side's first home goal against Real Madrid since October 1994, scooping a wonderful pass over the visitors' defence and Cop followed the flight of the ball expertly before dispatching a left-footed volley beyond Kiko Casilla.

Sporting's joy was short-lived as Isco was allowed a touch too much room inside the area, shuffled away from Carlos Carmona, skipped past Vesga and Fernando Amorebieta, and lashed a shot into the top corner for a similarly high-quality equaliser.

A sliding Jorge Mere scrambled James Rodriguez's low cross away from the Sporting goal line in the 37th minute after Mateo Kovacic pulled the hosts apart on the break.Lucas fired over in trying to emulate Isco's earlier heroics but Madrid could not turn sustained pressure into a half-time lead.

Isco continued to mesmerise the Sporting defence when the action resumed and, after he won a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left, James picked out Nacho, whose header was stunningly kept out by Ivan Cuellar.

Once again, following a close shave, Sporting hit the front. Nacho fouled Cop and Jean-Sylvain Babin headed Carmona's lofted delivery towards the penalty spot, where Vesga cleverly looped a header past the scrambling Casilla and into the corner.

Rubi saw his team's lead last a comparatively lengthy nine minutes this time around, with Danilo opting against a long-range attempt to flight an inviting ball for Morata leap above Babin and head home.

Sporting wing-back Isma Lopez stormed into the Madrid area to drag a shot wide, while a familiar source caused mayhem at the other end with 18 minutes to play.

Isco dazzlingly shimmied in and out of increasingly desperate Sporting challenges before substitute Marcelo blasted the loose ball wide.

Lucas' angry kick at the bench when he was substituted late was a useful summary of the frustration consuming his Madrid team-mates until Isco bailed them out magnificently – making his most convincing argument to date that he deserves to be more than a supporting character under Zidane.

Bayer Leverkusen 0 Bayern Munich 0: Leaders' advantage cut by 10 men

    omertoprak-cropped_403ohd47huuw13xdg6vhbom6m.jpg

Bayern Munich were unable to retain their 10-point lead at the Bundesliga summit after being held to a 0-0 draw by Bayer Leverkusen, who played for more than half an hour with 10 men.

Carlo Ancelotti made five changes from the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday to keep key players fresh for Tuesday's return leg, but those who came in failed to impress and RB Leipzig now sit just eight points back after a 4-0 thumping of Freiburg earlier in the day.

Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman were unable to make a meaningful impact in place of first-choice wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, while Thomas Muller again lacked sharpness in front of goal in the absence of suspended top scorer Robert Lewandowski.

Bayern laboured early on and it was not until after the half-hour mark that they looked like breaking through, David Alaba and Arturo Vidal denied by two goal-line clearances in quick succession from Leverkusen.

Coman also failed to convert from little more than six yards out, but the balance appeared to tilt in Bayern's favour when Tin Jedvaj was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Muller in the 59th minute.

Ancelotti sent Robben, Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm on - the Dutchman making his 250th competitive appearance for the club - in a bid to improve his side's creative prowess, but a goal that would have put them two wins from the title never came and they will need to pick themselves up ahead of the trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

A poor touch from Kevin Volland denied the forward the chance to test Manuel Neuer in the ninth minute, while Julian Brandt – the subject of ongoing reported interest from Bayern – lost his footing and fired over when found by Volland 12 yards out.Bayern enjoyed the majority of possession but it was not until the 32nd minute that they really threatened Bernd Leno's goal.

Alaba saw his shot blocked by Jedvaj before being cleared off the line by Wendell, with calls for handball to be given against the Croatian ignored by referee Daniel Siebert.

Leverkusen were unable to remove the danger, though, and Vidal came close seconds later. The Chilean looped the ball over Leno before heading it goalwards, only for Omer Toprak to keep it out with a last-ditch slide.

Bayern were unrelenting but Coman was unable to break the deadlock before half-time as he fired straight at Leno from just outside the six-yard box after Muller picked him out at the back post.

Early in the second half Muller hesitated after being set free on the right-hand side of the box, but managed to work the ball over to Vidal whose shot was blocked.

Bayern were given a boost before the hour mark when Jedvaj was dismissed having hauled down Muller as the Germany international chased a long ball, and Ancelotti responded by sending Robben on for Costa.

Lahm swept Muller's cross narrowly wide from inside the six-yard box in the 84th minute and Robben sent a back-post header into the side-netting in stoppage time as Bayer Leverkusen held firm.

Tayfun Korkut's side now sit 11th, just four points adrift of what could be a Europa League qualification spot, although the distance to the bottom three is the same.

Southampton 0 Manchester City 3: Kompany ends drought as Guardiola's men go third

    kompany-cropped_j1vxlpfs0d251dpqy67nypder.jpg

Vincent Kompany scored his first Premier League goal since August 2015 to help send Manchester City third with a 3-0 win at Southampton.

Both sides struggled to create much in a disappointing first half in which neither goalkeeper was tested, though Leroy Sane will have been aggrieved not to have earned a penalty.

But City found their stride after the break and it was Kompany, restored to the starting XI having been left out for the 3-1 victory over Hull City, who broke the deadlock.

The Belgian's header, which should have been saved by Fraser Forster, ended a 20-month drought – though the injury-plagued defender has only played 17 top-flight games in that time.

Sane finished a rapid City counter-attack to effectively put the game to bed 13 minutes from time, before Sergio Aguero added gloss to the scoreline with a close-range header.

Pep Guardiola's men leapfrog Liverpool into third and are seven points ahead of Everton and Manchester United, although their city neighbours have two games in hand.

City started brightly and Aguero appeared in the goalscoring mood as he had a series of sighters in the opening minutes.

Dusan Tadic should have done better at the other end in the 15th minute when he blazed over from the edge of the box at the end of a well-worked move involving Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini.James Ward-Prowse headed well off target from Steven Davis' cross before David Silva only managed to turn a deflected Aguero delivery into the side-netting.

The main talking point of a low-key first half came when Sane was upended in the area by Forster after latching onto Yaya Toure's throughball, but referee Neil Swarbrick did not award a penalty, with replays indicating the goalkeeper may first have got a slight touch on the ball.

Toure headed over from the subsequent corner, but neither side was able to register a shot on target before the interval.Ward-Prowse curled the past the left-hand post from a free-kick, but the hosts fell behind as Southampton saw the best and the worst of Forster.

First he showcased his reflexes to tip Jesus Navas' long-range drive over, but from the corner that followed Kompany gave City the lead with a header into the ground that the Southampton keeper failed to save despite the effort being straight at him.

The England international somewhat redeemed himself as he beat Aguero to a low delivery from Kevin de Bruyne – taking a knee to the head in the process – with Silva seeing his follow up blocked.

Claudio Bravo's save from a Tadic header marked the first on-target effort in eight that he has not allowed in, drawing loud cheers from the travelling support, who were given further reason to celebrate by Sane and Aguero.

De Bruyne squared for Sane to slot in City's second at the end of an excellent break and the Belgium playmaker was the provider for Aguero.

Aguero rose between two Saints defenders to nod in a looping far-post cross from De Bruyne, the Argentine making it 11 goals in his last 11 games and five in as many Premier League appearances.

Atletico Madrid 3 Osasuna 0: Carrasco bags brace for dominant hosts

    yannickcarrasco-cropped_14fyb7dyprldz1ly7nj2s8fhu8.jpg

Yannick Carrasco grabbed a brace as Atletico Madrid geared up for their Champions League quarter-final trip to Leicester City with a dominant 3-0 home win over lowly Osasuna in LaLiga.

Antoine Griezmann gave Atleti a 1-0 lead over the Premier League champions heading into the second leg in midweek, but the France star was afforded the luxury of watching on from the bench in one of five changes on Saturday.

Carrasco started both games, though, and he struck the opener after half an hour as the bottom-of-the-table visitors came under the cosh at the Vicente Calderon.

Osasuna had won their previous two matches to keep their slim survival hopes just about alive, but they never looked likely to register a third straight victory and Carrasco doubled Atleti's lead shortly after half-time before Filipe Luis added a fine third goal with just under half an hour remaining.

The game ended with an almost comedic air as forgotten man Alessio Cerci made his first LaLiga appearance in two and a half years before the hosts missed two penalties in as many minutes - Carrasco seeing his chance of a hat-trick pass with the first as home fans' calls for Cerci to take a kick fell on deaf ears.Victory keeps Diego Simeone's men in third place, four points above Sevilla ahead of their clash with Valencia on Sunday.

Amid a slow start, Angel Correa failed to turn Atleti's first chance on target from Nicolas Gaitan's teasing low cross. But the hosts soon built momentum and, after Correa and Thomas Partey had both seen strikes deflected wide, Carrasco broke the deadlock.

The Belgium international took up possession on the edge of the area, worked room for a shot and sent a pinpoint drive arrowing into the bottom-left corner.

Atleti kept pushing and Diego Godin nodded agonisingly past the right-hand post, before Fernando Torres similarly missed the target as he ran clear into the box.

Although Osasuna made it to the interval without conceding again, Carrasco grabbed his second within two minutes of the restart, ghosting in at the back post to head Gaitan's fine centre beyond Salvatore Sirigu.

A fine Atleti move then forged a chance for Fernando Torres to net in the league for the first time in over two months, but Sirigu blocked well from the forward's low finish. The goalkeeper somehow denied Torres again when the striker stretched to nod on target, but a third goal quickly arrived.

With Osasuna still regrouping from the previous attack, Correa pushed a pass into Filipe's path and the overlapping full-back calmly placed a right-footed finish into the net.

The margin between the two sides gave Simeone the opportunity to rest further key men, with Filipe and Torres both withdrawn, while Carrasco drew a comfortable stop from Sirigu.Loud cheers greeted Cerci's introduction from the bench and a barmy end to the game was sparked as Correa won an 88th-minute spot-kick.

Sirigu, who brought down Correa, lifted himself to deny Carrasco a hat-trick from 12 yards, but Atleti were quickly awarded another penalty for handball by Miguel de las Cuevas.

Thomas took the spot-kick this time, but Sirigu again saved brilliantly to extend Atleti's streak of missed penalties in LaLiga to an incredible six.

Monaco 2 Dijon 1: Substitute Falcao inspires fightback

    falcaombappe-cropped_143314y1gg4el123y8yji5fn6x.jpg

Radamel Falcao's inspired intervention from the bench secured a vital 2-1 win for Monaco against Dijon to restore their three-point lead at the top of Ligue 1.

With second-placed Paris Saint-Germain winning at Angers on Friday, the pressure was on Monaco to follow suit, but they trailed Dijon at Stade Louis II until Falcao, rested ahead of a Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, arrived as a substitute to create one goal and score the other with a pair of stunning free-kicks.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes as Lois Diony powered a left-footed shot against the crossbar before captain Cedric Varrault broke the deadlock.

Varrault was quickest to react when Danijel Subasic parried Julio Tavares' header, bundling the ball into the net, but Monaco regrouped and responded well after half-time.

Although Baptiste Reynet saved instinctively from Valere Germain's header, the goalkeeper was helpless to stop Falcao's 69th-minute free-kick from crashing down off the crossbar for Nabil Dirar to prod over the line.

The hosts thought they had scored again shortly afterwards, but Falcao was flagged offside as he waved a leg towards Kamil Glik's goalbound header.

Monaco would not be denied, though, and Falcao – from a similar position again – sent another magnificent free-kick arcing into the opposite corner to seal the points.

Barcelona 3 Real Sociedad 2: Messi shines to keep pressure on Madrid

    lionel-messi-cropped_1ctx9jkzurb241t0d771xthuhk.jpg

Lionel Messi put in a man-of-the-match performance to help Barcelona return to winning ways after consecutive defeats against Malaga and Juventus as they beat Real Sociedad 3-2 at Camp Nou.

The Argentina international struck twice in the first half to take his tally for the Catalans to 498 goals in all competitions, before an own goal from Samuel Umtiti shortly before the break helped the Basque side back in the game.

Messi then set up Paco Alcacer – who replaced the suspended Neymar – to make it 3-1, with Xabi Prieto quickly responding to make it four goals in the last eight minutes of an enthralling first half.

Sociedad were unable to find a leveller in a much more low-key second half, as Messi's stellar display made the difference.

Saturday's win not only provides a welcome boost for Barca ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Juventus, with the reigning Spanish champions in need of another comeback after their 3-0 defeat in Turin on Tuesday, but also keeps their LaLiga title chances alive.

Luis Enrique's men are trailing leaders Real Madrid by three points ahead of next week's Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu, while the capital side have a game in hand, too.

Sociedad made an encouraging and should perhaps have gone a goal up when Willian Jose presented Mikel Oyarzabal with a fine opportunity in the 12th minute, only for the young attacker to aim a tame shot straight at goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barcelona slowly grew into the game and forged ahead when Messi found the net five minutes later, sending a low shot past goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from outside the area after being set up by Luis Suarez.

Messi then doubled his side's lead 10 minutes before half-time with his 29th strike of the season, tapping home from close range after Rulli had initially done well to deny Suarez.

The visitors refused to give up, though, and they pulled one back shortly before the break when Umtiti was unfortunate to divert Inigo Martinez's cross past his own goalkeeper.

But Barca immediately restored their two-goal lead when Alcacer beat Rulli with a low shot into the far corner having been sent clean through on goal by Messi. There was still more to come in the first half, however, and Prieto expertly steered the ball past Ter Stegen from Willian Jose's cross.

Things significantly slowed down after half-time as Sociedad did well to limit Messi's contribution to the game, with Alcacer and Suarez struggling to take some of the weight off the Argentine's shoulders.

Eusebio Sacristan's men could do little to worry the hosts at the other end, though.
A win would have moved them up to fifth, but Asier Illarramendi's opportunistic free kick from 40 yards out that was pushed over by Ter Stegen their most dangerous attempt on target.

Yuri Berchiche fired over when well placed in stoppage time, while and Suarez was denied by Rulli's legs at the other end as Barca ultimately got the job done.

Napoli 3 Udinese 0: Mertens hot-streak continues as Sarri's men close the gap on Roma

    mertens-cropped_eek747ayml261mcejkzv6h9xs.jpg

Dries Mertens' remarkable scoring run continued as his 21st Serie A goal of the season helped Napoli close the gap on second-placed Roma to two points with a convincing 3-0 win over Udinese. The Belgian netted his 27th of the campaign in all competitions to put Napoli ahead moments after the interval at Stadio San Paolo.

It is Mertens' 18th goal in his last 16 games and the former PSV man is now just one shy of matching his tally of league goals for the last three seasons combined.

Maurizio Sarri's side were far from at their best, though, and Udinese could have restored parity when Duvan Zapata - on loan from Napoli - hit the woodwork, only for Allan to double the hosts' tally against his former club in the 63rd minute after capitalising on an Udinese mistake.

Jose Callejon volleyed home a third to ensure there was no way back for the visitors, while Arkadiusz Milik went close to adding a fourth.

It represents a first loss in six Serie A outings for Udinese, while Napoli move onto 70 points and just two behind Roma, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta, with six fixtures remaining.

Wenger: Arsenal have not been disastrous

    arsenewenger-cropped_1pj0fjekr9n811254brathlqvp.jpg

Arsene Wenger is adamant Arsenal have not been "disastrous" at home, but admitted they have not been good enough in away games.Arsenal have dropped to seventh position in the Premier League table following a number of disappointing results and face a tough task to clinch Champions League qualification - sitting nine points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool.

They travel to Middlesbrough on Monday and Wenger has urged his men to step up their game and show what they can do away from home, too.

"We have to make sure we perform in the next game and give everything," Wenger said at a media conference."When I speak about the mental test it is to perform no matter what the circumstances are around you."But what is for sure is that in the last three months there has been no consistency, especially away from home.

"At home we have not been disastrous in the quality of our performances. But away we have not performed, and it is difficult to analyse why because in the past we have been very strong."

Much has been said and written about Wenger's future at the club as well as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez's contract situation in recent months, but the Frenchman hopes his players remain focused on their task on the pitch."It has not been very enjoyable. It is a big challenge. I do not know if uncertainty off the pitch breeds uncertainty in the team and performance," he added.

"Of course the players ask me about my future. They communicate of course, but I think the most important thing we speak about is the next game.

"Mesut Ozil may be coming to the end of his contract but you perform until the last day of that contract. That is how I see it. We have to focus on what is important, and that is what happens on the pitch. Top-level sportsmen have to be like that.
"What is for sure, though, is that the results are not what we expect them to be."
